What do you guys take from your occasional moments in sPvP however ? Which metrics ? Which impressions ? Any recent examples ?

I love the game, but I have many of the same complaints as any of the other players on the forum. I was getting trolled pretty hard by Hugh the other day… hambow is pretty OP, has nothing to do with him being better than me.

You playing warrior? or sin?

I play lock-down mesmer and a Teldo engineer build, in that order.

I make it a self rule to try and avoid meta. Not play a condi war, not play hambow, and still try and play to my full potential.

How do you measure your metrics for builds that seem overpowered or overly-prevalent? (not you directly, but the pvp team) without harming diversity among builds. Since Longbow got hit (and will be hit YET AGAIN) my build will be slightly nerfed simply because I use a longbow, not because I run hambow.

More careful analysis needs to be made on the synergy between skills, mechanics and their overall effectiveness spread across a wide margin of combinations, not just the current “flavor of the month”

I heard that knee-jerk balancing isn’t on the table, but it definitely seems to be making a pass under the table in some of these recent patches

In a recent tPvP, i went close and then help middle. Saw that our creature was full hp and no one did go to kill it, so i went (being low dmg output).
When i was killing it, i saw an enemy elementalist thar burst me down and finish the job on the creature, and then i asked, why didnt anyone killed the creature? Got a response from a rank+50 guy stating that this wasn’t PvE and i was a noob… .
We we’re losing and then i saw this +50 guy not moving and saying that we were noobs and to go back to WvW..
I wonder how did this kinda of guys, because he wasn’t the only one, to have that ranks and bitc**** about the team and do nothing…

Your first mistake was using their rank as any indicator of skill….people farmed Skyhammer and got crazy ranks, that doesn’t mean they are any good.

You also need to find a way , so PvPers with those <<rewards>> will try PvE or WvW , and be used as <<moving advertaziment>>
Now that any1 can sign up for a PvP match from anywhere , they wont bothered to w8 in the PvP lobby and see your fancy <<rewards>>
Also if you are in 50th leaderboard ranking , only a monirity of ppl will see and fight you :P

I don’t think they need much to get people to “try” PvE….it is easy to get into, and easier to actually do.

You won’t need to sit in the lobby for rewards, you just grab em from a vendor and either join right back into pvp or do whatever other part of the game you wish….or like the previous poster said, similar to the Zenith skins that you can just access from the PvP window and unlock from there.

Also the portrait trim wouldn’t be that hard to find, more frequent in sPvP, but people can still be running around in WvW etc and people still see it….it is simply prestige, so that doesn’t really matter in the first place (it is mainly for you)

Maybe change it to Top 100/50/25 for SoloQ and Team Arenas (200 people in NA, 200 in EU)

We know that there has been talk about the merging of pve and pvp gear etc. for the aesthetics to be transferable etc.

But other than gear, there are no cosmetic rewards for players who distinguish themselves in sPvP.

I propose that there should be a few extra perks to working your way through the pvp hordes other than some title noone rarely sees.

A few such additions would be:

- Custom portrait outlines for players who place in the top 50 (bronze), 25 (Silver) and 3 (gold) in SoloQ and Team Arenas (both have a different graphic style to differentiate). These graphics would be something akin to the outlines you see around veteran, elite, champion and legendary mobs, but not as plain. (fancier, and with a more war/pvp theme to it)

- Custom Finishers for players who reach certain title/achievement milestones, as well as the aforementioned rank status.

- Custom weapon skins available for players as they progress in ranks. Not only should they be able to unlock the basic, already available armors/weapons as they rank up from their reward chests and forge recipes, there should be a few custom skins that can be purchased with a good chunk of glory and the required rank.

- Capes…yep I went there. Ofc there should be ways for players in the PvE realm to get these as well, but they should definitely be available in a PvP format, rather than the little flags skewered into our backs that we were given instead….why are those even a thing

There are numerous other things you can potentially have!

I said less WPs encourages small scale fights. Is that wrong? What point are you trying to make other than trying to strawman me?

I just fail to understand the logic behind “WPs = zergs”. You die, you run back. It’s the same for people running in groups of 5 as it for people running in groups of 30+.

Waypoints give too much freedom for people to retaliate against attacks, to get to positions must faster than they should be able to.

It isn’t about the deaths and having to run back, it is about having an entire mass of people just whip across the map at a moments notice….this encourages players to simply group up into blobs since they have quick and easy access to wherever they need to go without consequence.

You cannot be (or is very difficult to be) immersed in a game that:

- Restricts your camera to constantly 3rd person
- has instant travel + a load screen with every waypoint
- has no inherent weather effects
- has icons in every corner of your screen, and a non-adjustable UI
- has NO sunset or sunrise (only light, then dark, then light…)
- has a nearly static world of repetitious events and plethora of never-moving NPCs

All-in-all, single player games are where you will find immersion, where they can cater a game to fit around your character and present everything to you in a way that seems more natural and not segmented for someone else who happens to be doing the exact same thing you are.

MMOs just can’t have that type of immersion.

Best we can hope for is they start learning how to write better stories and polish up the game world, so instances and events will help make the player feel more integral in the world.

I actually made a video about this on my channel a long time ago, where I was going to explore zones with my UI completely turned off….and it actually made much more of a difference than I had imagined.

tl;dr

The game isn’t immersive, try playing with your UI turned off in a PvE zone, and you will at least feel a better sense of immersion.

you also thought scarlet was a good villain.

I also know the entire plot a year in advance.

Think about it this way…you know the ending.

So if this was a book (story) most readers would have put it back onto the shelf before reaching the end (which you seem to be hinting is good)

The story has to be good, not just some pieces, or just the ending, because you need to keep the reader / player intrigued and wanting to know what happens. Scarlet makes it really hard to CARE what she is doing…

After reading this article, and already having an opinion before reading it that matches up.

I personally feel this throw-away content is kind of a running joke by this time, and although it is nice to have that “new content rush” it only seems to last for a few initial days, then becoming stale for a lot of players and only really sticking for a few.

Personally I would much prefer balance and polish patches every 2 weeks, and full content releases attune to expansion packs every 6m-1yr.

And honestly, this would let their currently rushing devs work on solidifying the core game, adding fluid and sensible events, and making the zones we have worth re-visiting.

What is everyone elses take on the current trend of the Living World an content additions in general?

SAB, Bazaar and the Molten Dungeon were the only moments so far in the entirety of the Living Story that have stuck with me.

And for the record, I pray you are not using player congregation numbers and achievements hunted for your “metrics” on the success of these additions…

To put it simply: a lot of these additions were simply seen as new things to farm (Achievement Points and Champ boxes / loot) and not actually fun, exciting, or overly enjoyable as an experience.

The only thing I was actually happy playing (purely for the enjoyment, not needing achievement dings), were the 3 I mentioned, the remainder just brought out my inner achievement hunter and gold chaser (which is bad)

SAB ISNT STORY. Its just some fun optional quest. And I bought this game to play GW2, not a game boy emulator.

I understand that some people like SAB, but tbh it is wasting developers’ time that could be spent on something more significant – like writing a believable story, creating new zones and dungeons, actually exploring GW1+2 world. If I wanted to play a silly platform game, I would play it. Instead, I bought an RPG/adventure MMO.

SAB is an action/adventure/RPG mini-game, and it works fine. Regardless. The developers have no sway in a story, they need proper writers for that….if you are fine with more scarlet, then keep your current mindset.

I have been running a 0/20/30/0/20 with GS + LB for ages in WvW and haven’t had any problems…

The tick change on LB F1 was kind of annoying, but it is still viable none the less.

To break it down: This was a spike team build / balance build where the players from a team would coordinate to nearly instantaneously and simultaneously burst down a specific target, while attempting to lock down their backline to prevent the spike from failing.

Every time a spike was successful was because an insanely timed D-shot or interupt was put down allowing the damage from their front and mid-line to pass through to their target.

Every time a spike failed, was because they didn’t properly lock down their mid line interrupters or monks / backline which provided protection and healing. Usually from a crazy reflex use of Infuse Health ( http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Infuse_Health ) to stop the players from going down.

from an outside perspective it may be hard to see, but even to someone who has never seen the game before can tell the entire team reacted at a single moment to take down a player or save their life.

GW2….these types of plays happen, but are harder to see, and happen fairly rare.

Why are there no instructions, no nothing, about the fight with the wurm…

The marionette fight has plenty of queues to tell people what they need to be doing. But for the wurm, they are left in the dark.

for the Amber fight for example, simply having an NPC saying “What if we try fighting it from the inside?! Quick, find a way to get eaten!” (sounds like something an Asura would tell you to do anyways)

Contrary to popular belief, trial and error fights ARE NOT FUN, they are tediuous and time consuming, and force un-deserved failures onto you until you memorize something, or find something that was never shown to you in the first place.

The fight is hard, and would still be hard, even with people knowing what to do. So just tell them!

New players will come in and have no idea whats going on, and experienced players would be trying to explain it in the middle of a fight.

Simplicity is sometimes the most complex nature. Allowing everyone to know what to do would actually make the fight more complex (rather than whacking at mobs, unclear of anything that is going on around you) because people would be trying to achieve the objectives the fight requires (which requires coordination alongside the complexity)

Don’t leave it to Dulfy to give players the basic information they need, that should have been given by the creators in the first place >.>

TL;DR
Add some audible ques for what players need to be doing amongst the chaos, it will ensure the fight is enjoyable to everyone regardless of their experience.

That is definitely a possibility….all I knew, was that when I spawned in, there was an eng there ready to kill anyone freshly recreated.

Adding variable weather would be a good start….

But what bothers me the most about the day and night cycle in this game is that there IS NO DAWN OR DUSK! It simply fades from light to dark, no color change, no sunset, no sunrise….just light > dark > light > dark.

Having a real lighting system, stretched shadows depending on the suns position, etc.

Noticed this earlier today, there was an engineer that had managed to get into the Red side’s spawn area and camp respawning players (nades and bombs are quite strong against players with a loading screen and a guaranteed location :P)

I have some footage of it, but not entirely sure how they managed to get up there in the first place.

And have to agree with them wholeheartedly. Even though we now have more interaction with the community (testing programs and CDI). It seems that some of the core wants and needs of the community are thrown wayward simply because they want to be different.

Simple aspects that could be added to the game, simply aren’t because they already exist somewhere else, they want something new and different, and are willing to sacrifice the playerbase (or at least their sanity) to achieve that.

All in all…why don’t we have GvG?

I wouldn’t try and make downed/rally traits better. I would remove them and add useful and more practical traits for movement or combat.

And no, I wouldn’t want a self res, that is yet another factor taken directly out of the players hands…sometimes it is better to get ressed by a few teammates, than activate vengeance.

I’ve been in situations where I was trying to res a teammate, they pop vengeance, and I just facepalm as they go and kill themselves. This should be something the player chooses to do, not a trait.

[PvP] My view on In-Combat Stealth

First things first…I am not against stealth completely, just its in-combat usefullness.
This is becoming more and more of a problem in PvP environments and WvW.
Stealth fields, finishers, leaps, and stealth in general has gotten a little out of hand mainly due to the in-combat capabilities of it.

Stealth should be a tool to escape, initiate, even both but not be a constant hindrance to an opponent in mid-combat….with no cost, or penalty (no revealed does NOT count). This is simply bad mechanics.

Currently the amount of in-combat stealth some classes can bring themselves and allies can simply make for an infuriating experience. When initiating a battle, group or individual, stealth is a valid tactic and can alter a battle every so slightly in your favor if used correctly. But when it happens several times during combat it simply takes away from any form of equality in terms of success and failure between the combatants. It no longer becomes an equal fight, it becomes a mess, tipping quickly into one players favor.

This is a tricky thing to alter since its applications are rather widespread, for example a simple Smoke Field would yield no effect with blast finisher or leaps when used in combat if it was removed completely, but they are a great strategy before a battle to position yourselves for an advantage….and the field cannot have in/out of combat applications without becoming too complex.

Causing damage to reveal a stealthed character or show a trace view/silhouette of them (similar to what the player/allies sees as stealth), or perhaps have a passive ability attached to one of the 4 primary attributes (such as precision) that allows you to detect a stealthed unit nearby would solve some issues.

This would allow players to react to a stealthed character if they have a quick enough reaction time, still giving the stealthed player enough time to effectively initiate and also allow the stealthed character to use distance to stay hidden and escape if they need to re-position by moving further from the target. This would allow agressive plays against stealth to exist, actively searching for the player in order to prevent another impossible-to-predict ambush.

I have always enjoyed stealth in games, I tend to play sneaky classes in most RPGs and Shooters. But when you get detected in most games, you need to react quickly, find cover and carefully plan your next move…not simply make your own cover in the middle of a firefight…(some games have this, but taking damage shows you so….its a poor move usually to do that.)

The issue is in-combat stealth, not stealth in general.

Why not just make banners do damage on summon anyway? The cooldown and animation is long enough to reward you with SOME damage. New trait can go here instead.

Berserker’s Might is weak and would synergize with Berserker’s Power… If they both weren’t grandmaster traits. Could be brought down a tier.

I’m not sure what to think of when Cull The Weak comes to mind. The only three weakness applications Warriors get are Mace autoattack, Hammer 2 and Warhorn 5. The mace autoattack will only hit something if they are stunned for the full 3 seconds (which could be better used doing something else instead of that long chain) and the Hammer 2 is single target cleave. The Warhorn is an AOE weakness which lasts a while and, when traited, has a relatively short cooldown. This would be a nice trait to have for a support stun build… Except it is only a 5% increase of damage when the condition can easily be cleansed (and it will be the only condition you apply, minus crippled.) Definitely needs to be 10% at least. I guess it synergizes with Sundering Mace, but all of that speccing into the mace for a 15% damage increase on something that is difficult to apply.

Vigorous Return should just be mashed in with Sweet Revenge. If you’re gonna consider speccing for being downed, you might as well get a better chance of surviving.

Fast Healer is definitely powerful when mixed with Mercy runes. 800+ toughness, 20% increases revive speed, and more health when revived. It is insanely wonderful, but you need to have the runes for the full effect. Most of the traits in this tree are for support warriors anyway, so who else would revive you than him? Also, wasn’t Reviver’s Might buffed to 3 stacks? When used with OP rez banner, you can give you and everyone you rezzed 15 stacks of might, not including the might stacks they make on their own… Certainly game changing.

The longbow traits are in a strange area. The Longbow might have been more of a support weapon when first added (fire field + blast finisher) but when it was given 6 stacks of bleeds on pin down… Might belong better in the Discipline or Arms trait line or change the weapon back to being more supporty.

Other than that, the traits for Warrior work really well. Almost too well. Other classes don’t compare, which is where “OP warrior” came from.

The wiki does not show any change in Reviver’s Might, but I have yet to test that myself.

I guess that is true, and mixed into a vigor build with stances, I guess reckless dodge has a pretty good place, while still providing a bonus to normal power based builds regardless.

that weapon combination is best suited for condi builds, the only worthwhile power attack from sword comes from Final Thrust :/

There are actually plenty of condi builds in the forum, a quick search should lead you to one.

as for your suggestions:

Sweet revenge would be a strange thing to work around, because if you got downed in an area where your friends could resurrect you, and there were not enough valid targets for you to kill….you would just be killing yourself for no reason…

Revivers might is just a slightly beefier version of the same thing, better yes, but still not worth taking.

Thrill of the Kill: it would still require an internal cooldown, or have the fury/swiftness uptime reduced to compensate. Tagging multiple enemies would trigger a massive boon of fury and swiftness to yourself if it didn’t.

Fast Healer: I think you misunderstood the wording, it is 15% reduction to your target (the person you are healing) not yourself. meaning you can help revive someone who is trying to be simply cleaved down with damage.

Vigorous Return: Please, just no. Do not try and tie them into other non-existant traits. They should have synergy by default, not pigeonholed in somehow, which is why downed/rally based traits are in such a poor state, and are rarely taken.

First and Foremost, perhaps I have the wrong understanding of what the trait system was meant to be designed as. But I figure it would be a way to customize and build your own playstyle using any specified class. But some of the traits for every class (some will be listed here) are simply not designed to be built around, or built into your playstyle.

Strength:

Death From Above: It has its niche uses in WvW from walls…but every other aspect of the game has little to no use for this trait (unless you plan on falling down a cliff in the near future) [Note: If PvE mobs were able to be knocked off ledges etc., this would be an interesting way to add incentive to stick to your target…but no…just no :P)

Powerful Banners: its a trait you take in banner builds, but not because it is a good trait, it is just the best for the build based on the small amount of choices given. It could use a tweak.

Berserker’s Might: Given the innate adrenaline gain from attacks, large quantity of other adrenaline aiding traits and un-unused signet of rage, this trait is left in the shoebox with very little use as a Grandmaster slot trait.

Arms: (The arms tree is actually in a pretty good place)

Rending Strikes: Perhaps the % chance is a little low, 33% chance for 1 stack of vulnerability is not really impressive for a slotted trait. Add an internal cooldown of 5 or 10 seconds and perhaps increase it to 5 stacks (7-10 seconds).

Defense: Argueably the strongest of the warrior’s trait trees, along side Discipline.

Vigorous Return: Rally/Downed specialized traits I never understood, it is a nice as a bonus if you are in organized play perhaps, but given all of the options to actual stay alive, there really is no real reason to take this, and you cannot BUILD around this trait. Unless your build has you dying a whole lot.

Cull the Weak: This is a lackluster trait that seems to only fit into tanky, mace/hammer builds. But even then, weakness uptime is so low, and scarce, this is rarely an option to build around.

Tactics: (here we go!)

Fast Healer: 10% increase in revive speed is barely a noticeable increase. Perhaps 15% increased speed, and add 15% damage reduction to your target.

Reviver’s Might: The final tier minor trait and it gives a whopping 1 might for 12 seconds? Perhaps change might to retaliation…

The major traits all suit the shouts and banners regime, but the strange inclusion of the 2 bow traits confuses me. They should be combined, for one, and possibly moved to another tree. (*Stronger Bowstrings + Burning Arrows = Arms Grandmaster?)

Discipline:

Thrill of the Kill: Perhaps I do not PvE enough to know where this would be useful. Perhaps it could be changed to: After an enemy kill, your next attack deals a bonus 5% more damage. (10s CD)

Sweet Revenge: A very trollish trait when it works, but not worth the slot 90% of the time. Again, traits that revolve around being downed, or rallied make little sense in build making.

I would like to know what other people think of these traits, and if they find other useless/useful, or viable in builds that I simply cannot foresee.

Mine would start with:

What would happen if combat speed was removed. In a game with boundless forms of CC, why is there an arbitrary mechanic for slowing a player down simply because they passed by something that did 1 damage.

So? GW1 had tons of lame Teambuilds as well – it was part of the game.

If there’s no possibility of making insane Lamerbuilds like NecroSpike, IWAY, Rangespike and stuff like that, I think theres something missing. Yes; we all hated those builds in GW1 and being a Player that always wanted to win “the right way”, I’ve almost pulled out my hair a couple of times cuz of those builds; but it made the Meta interesting and forced ppl to be creative and come up with new strategies etc.

  • In GW1, degen alone wasn’t necessarily a viable way to kill an opponent most of the time (either via hexes, conditions or a combination of the two).
  • In GW1, there weren’t instant-activation passive procs everywhere. Players could actually see everything happening and triggering.
  • In GW1, we had the “holy trinity” to deal with gimmicky spike team compositions like R-spike or even condition spam. IWAY and SWAY were nerfed. Necroway was sort of bandaid-nerfed with that weird update to protection prayers (although, that took ages). The reason R-spike stayed around for so long was because it was more fair than the others. R-spike required line-of-sight, it could be mitigated through protection prayers and blocks, and it also had a distinct cool-down on the spike around which the opposing team could play. There really wasn’t anything anyone could do most of the time against the other three gimmick comps. That’s the trick: in GW1, you actually had to land spells/attacks consistently and in a timely fashion in order to bring down an opponent.
  • GW2 doesn’t have the “holy trinity” to deal with skills/skill spam that not only deals damage but that may also render an opponent helpless to either defend or retaliate with damage.
  • The current GW2 condition-meta promotes mindless, ranged skill-spam that front-loads conditions onto low-recharge, fast-activating throwaway skills and rewards the condition player for spamming skills and then running around while auto-attacking for the rest of the encounter. Since there’s no one to remove conditions for you and condition players get conditions for free almost instantly and on incredibly short cool-downs, it just burns players out far more effectively than if the condition player just invested into power.

GW2 has made power less effective than condition damage. By doing so, ANet has undermined the usefulness of dodging, positioning and timing that was supposed to be the fundamental base of GW2 combat.

ANet needs to make power-based damage king in GW2. It’s the only way to heal this game’s pvp as it stands right now.

Quarterly PPT idea

Idea:
Reduce the times when PPT ticks to 4 times per day, but change the PPT system to gradually increase and decrease depending on the points being held (like heating and cooling)

This would help to alleviate the “night crew” syndrome that can create large disparities between sever scores while people are doing what human beings normally require…sleeping

Having a night crew will still aid your server, but rather than it being exponential, it will limit the advantage to only 1 of the 4 PPT tick timers.

As for the heating/cooling example, the amount of potential points would increase and decrease steadily between 6 hour periods to equal what you control, meaning that fighting for control of towers near the actual Tick, means that there are 4 “prime-times” during the day where what you control is vital, meaning assaults, defences, and strategy are vital around these times.

Content with commitment, enough with the temporary festivities. New areas, new mechanics, new races, new skills, new weapons.

Also…more content similar to the Zephyr Sanctum content. It had a serious LoZ vibe going on that I really enjoyed. (the Molten dungeon was a good addition to!)

We need a Sorrow’s Furnace and campaign style content for GW2, GW1 did it right!

New map to address the Queue’s due to arrive when there are no queue’s left in any tier.
All the effort gone into an overflow map that has no effect on the outcome of the weekly match and there wont even be an overflow.

You can join EotM whenever you want. It is labeled as an overflow kinda, but it is just another map you can join, like Ob Sanctum.

It has no bearing on server score, because it contains every server (all NA servers are grouped together when joining the map, and so are all EU)

People just love to find things to complain about lol

And some people make stuff up just because they can. Here’s the exact quote from the official EOTM FAQ, and I could find nothing since this was posted indicating that anything has changed … certainly not anything that would support your erroneous claim.

“Q: How does the overflow work? Is it possible to fight against other servers? Is it combined with EU and NA or just one specific region?
A: The current iteration is that you will only be matched up against the other worlds in your current WvW matchup. That is one of the many aspects of the map that we will be actively getting feedback on from the community and the testers.”

This is a direct quote from Devon in response to a “So EOTM will stay cross server after release too?” thread.

“We literally can’t cross EU and NA servers, they are physically located in different places. We are, most likely, going to set it up as a place for all NA and all EU servers to be put in one map, however.”

This was posted 2 days ago. On a forum you probably don’t have access to (because you evidently aren’t a tester…)

again…you guys will find anything to complain about. And I will totally just keep “making things up” as I feel fit.

Mostly likely is not the same as ‘will be’.

Possibly…but then again, that is what the whole “development process” is about right? Nothing is yet set in stone.

These objectives look very interesting to take and defend. I wish they add this as a new map to WvW and simply remove the borderland maps

Can you build siege on top of the towers? I can totally see myself building a trebuchet there to hit the nearby keep.

I think it was possible, they may remove the ability to in the future…it would make sense.

More Counter Stealth Play

Make it function like Planetside 2…invisible while stationary, with a faint outline/effect while moving.

Or make it like other games, non-time limit stealth, slower movement speed, can be detected in very close range. Unable to re-stealth in-combat unless using a long CD “o shi-” skill.

OR….have it so you can stealth like you can right now, remove revealed, but have it drain 1 initiative a second. Unable to gain initiative passively while in stealth (traits/skills would still work)
