Everyone’s missing the point. MMOs are specifically designed to cater to the obsessive types. Telling us to “stop grinding” is kittened because that’s why we play. It’s the sole purpose of GW2. Everyone has different definitions of fun and I find it amusing to see people tell others what the “right type” of fun is.
This is an MMO. Grind is the raison d’etre. Get used to that idea.
Dueling would be perfect when I’m waiting 15 mins for a dragon to spawn. I spend so much time just standing around when I could be having fun with all the other guys around me.
What’s the downside again?
I’ve got a whole bunch of these guys just taking up space. Also pots of arcane powder. I know you can make stuff from them, but since it costs 200 glory to make anything (token cost), I might as well purchase the mystery coffer instead.
I have lots of equipment in my pvp locker and it’s rare that I get something where “deposit collectible” isn’t greyed out.
The problem also is that so many pvp recipes are unknown. I have gaps in my inventory, but when I want to get a rare weapon or armor, there’s no place I can look it up and get the recipe. Am I missing something?
How about they implement friendly fire instead?
If you think I’m going to leave a juicy empty point uncapped (far or not), you have another think coming.
80% of the time in the start in SoloQ, the enemy caps their home and leaves. I quietly sit out of sight, wait for a few seconds and cap their far without having to fight at all.
Give me one reason why I should not do this?
The purpose of far is distraction. I’ve lost count of the number of times when they have to sacrifice people at mid just to cap their close. If they’re doing that, my own close is the last thing on their mind. Jolly good I say.
Report them as bots.
I always take treb at kyhlo and do a pretty good job of it…unless a warrior, guardian or ele comes to destroy it. As a mesmer, most of my spells and phantasms can be “obstructed” and the melee guys just keep the treb between themselves and me constantly whacking away at it and it invariably gets destroyed. The same guys wouldn’t stand a chance against me on an open field, but it’s just irritating to constantly have something in the way.
So what’s the best strategy for defending my treb in these situations. Should I just take Moa along for easy wins?
One of the reasons why WvW turns me off is because I find it boring . And when I do get some action it’s all zergy – meaning I don’t get a chance to be a real hero and save the day (yeah I’m a sucker for that crap!)
sPvP is perfect. Non stop excitement where what you do matters. At least in 5v5 matches.
In my opinion, it’s a poor alternative to centaur runes. I like the 25% boost, but the other stats are completely out of whack with my play style – glass cannon. Centaur runes give me power and bleed duration synergizing nicely with sharper images.
In fact, I did some DPS tests and the damage output with centaur runes is easily comparable to scholars and divinity!
Not sure if that list is complete. There are some unique items that don’t fall into any category. For example, today I got an iron flintlock pistol with slivers, and paid tournament tokens. I don’t see that fitting into any “structure” that I’m aware of.
The Wiki’s PvP recipe list is extremely inadequate. I want to fill out my collection since I have glory to burn and I don’t know what combination of ingredients have a probability of creating what.
Perhaps there’s a resource I’m missing – can anyone help out?
Ever since I discovered Centaur runes (many many months ago), I haven’t been able to let them go. I’ve…gotten addicted to the near perma swiftness. There are a few others builds I’d like to try out (Like Osicat’s “hidden cat” build), but no speed makes me a sad mesmer
I primarily PvP and since Pyro’s Immortal mesmer got nerfed, I haven’t used a focus for anything else. Mesmers have no other way to get swiftness and it sucks.
Any suggestions? I have centaur runes hooked up and feeding directly into my bloodstream. How do I get rehab?
Before it got nerfed, I would have recommended Pyro’s immortal mesmer build. Now THAT was a bunker!
I use Moa to quickly get rid of irritating bunkers. With a 180 second CD, I can use it a maximum of five times. It also kills all necro minions which is awesome. First I summon my phantasms out, let them get in a hit and then Moa the bunker. 10 seconds and the point is mine.
It’s not that I can’t kill the bunkers given enough time. I can. It’s just that Moa’ing them is far more efficient.
Forget about fighting on point. Stand away and kill them at a distance with phantasms. No way you’re going to win against a bunker engi “on point” (presuming they’re good of course).
I can’t use the Ether Signet for three reasons:
1. I use Centaur runes to give me perma speed. With a 35 second CD, this becomes too dangerous. With Ether feast I can run into someone soon after and the CD is short enough to be up when I need to use it again.
2. I need Mender’s Purity. The signet cuts my condition removal by more than half.
3. I rely on deception. I want as few identifying traits as possible. Not good with a signet sign hanging over my name tag. (also the reason why I don’t use glory boosters)
You can also use an Eternal Cold Potion (the exotic permanent one) in combo with Centaur runes to get swiftness without using your heal.
I only PvP, but I’ll keep that in mind!

Now that Illusionist’s Celerity has been moved to a master trait, how about we take out 15 points from elsewhere (10 from Dueling and 5 from inspiration) and use the points to get that trait?
The build got like 3 unneeded traits in its current form, which are candidates. Sadly, they are covered by more or less vital traits.
Candidates for removal:Dueling:
Confusing Combatants, covered by Blade TrainingInspiration:
Compounding Celerity, which was taken only to spend those last 5 points anyway.
Mender’s Purity(!), as the new heal will not be as spammable. This, however, is covered by phantasmal Strength.Personally, I’d remove 15 from inspiration. The sword training does make a difference by lowering some defensive cooldowns aswell as the cd of iswordsman.
Comparison:
version 1(10 from duel, 5 from inspiration):
+15% phant damage
remove condi on heal
move faster for each illusion
+100 vit, +100 healingversion 2(15 from inspiration):
20% sword skill reduction
+150 precision(8% crit chance)
+10% crit damage
confusion on illusion deathcomparison, matching offense against offense, defense against defense and junk against junk:
15% illusion damage vs 150 precision, 10% crit damage
condi remove, 100 vit, 100 heal vs 20% sword skill reduction.
move speed per illu vs confusion on illu death. This one depends on your gear. If you go full berserker, having the points in inspiration will probably yield more raw damage, but once you start mixing in some other gear, like celestial or soldiers pieces, the precision and crit from duels will probably pull ahead.
Unfortunately I’m not ready to give up Mender’s purity. I’m not using the new signet heal and the condition removal is too good to pass up. Taking out 15 from inspiration will also reduce my phantasm health as well as lower damage…too much sacrifice IMHO.
Another benefit of taking IC though is that we can get Compounding Power for a possible 9% increase in damage for three illusions!
I really wish GW2 had a kind of “Master of combat” like they had in GW1 giving us DPS numbers periodically.
Balkanpy from Reddit made a DPS display app.
I’ve not used it, so I don’t know how good or accurate it is.
Wow that’s very cool. Loved it and learned a lot. Like scholar runes are better than divinity runes. And Centaur runes are also awesome (because of the bleed duration I’m guessing).
Now to make a chart showing DPS over time to reflect the set up phase!
I also wonder if there’s a way to chart the damage as you summon your phants. The reason is I can imagine that sharper images will make duelists stronger as more of them are out. But that takes time and it’s more than likely the fight will already be over by then.
Till the time three duelists are up, the swordsmen might well be stronger. I really wish GW2 had a kind of “Master of combat” like they had in GW1 giving us DPS numbers periodically.
This is very informative. Unfortunately I find it invaluable to put 20 point into dueling to get the shorter recharge rate for pistols as well as the increased range enabling me to get a head start in fights. With that, I’m five points short of being able to take phantasmal haste
The only other place I can get five more points is maybe from domination giving up the 15% damage increase. But I don’t know what kind of trade off that will make. Should be worth testing.
Now that Illusionist’s Celerity has been moved to a master trait, how about we take out 15 points from elsewhere (10 from Dueling and 5 from inspiration) and use the points to get that trait?
Black Powder/Smokescreen + Unload.
Thanks.
Tried this today. The survivability is pretty good. You spend most of your time managing mantras which can get sorta boring – but I guess that’s true of every bunker build. I miss the dynamism and constant high risk of playing a glass cannon phantasm mesmer. But this surely has it’s place in a team with the constant buffs, health regen, healing etc.
While battling the thief in the mists, I’m being constantly blinded from a good distance almost continuously. No thief in PvP has been able to do this to me (yet). I mean I’ve met “blinding” thieves sure, but not like this. So I want to know which skill is she using so I’ll have a counter and know its cool down etc.
Any help would be appreciated.
Sounds interesting. The idea of spending most of the time charging mantras, raising your armor is neat. Phantasms will also keep up the pressure. Charging would be vulnerable to CCs for sure even with concentration. Should try this sometime.
Where exactly is the vendor selling wintersday gifts for 200 glory?
but but….what if i am not ready?
i still need to switch signets and talk to my teammates about strategy o.o
I’m sure they won’t do away with the option of being able to switch to “not ready”. I’m merely saying that the default should be “ready” in order to accommodate the vast majority of teams that play. Saves time for everyone and no one loses!
What if I’m solo roaming and a zerg runs over me? Everyone gets my human t3 cultural chest piece? (By far my most expensive piece of gear) Everyone would be duping legendaries in WvW.
Maybe it can go to one random person who killed you…
Whatever, I still haven’t found it in my options and I’ve been looking for it with Peow Peow for like 20 minutes.
Like I said, you won’t find it in your options if that’s where you’re looking . It’s on the left hand side of the screen as soon as you enter a tournament (solo or team)
WHere is this button? I have been looking through my options list for hte past 20 minutes and i dont see it. Yeah solo q takes a while just for a game, hotjoin is way faster
It’s not in your options. When you enter a tournament match, there’ll be a button on the right hand side of your screen saying “I am Ready”. By default you’re not ready and you have to intentionally “be” ready.
Which I think is ridiculous given that so many people don’t even know of its existence…
Reporting them for botting seems to be the only reasonable solution so far. After all, how do we know they’re human if they’re just standing there doing nothing?
Why not when your character die you perma die? Make sense, no?
I would love this “hardcore” mode. I remember seeing this in Diablo II (and maybe others). It’ll be a separate area from the other “softcore” players with WvW segregation and everything.
I bet it would completely change the face of WvW – make it more like real war in fact!
Can we please please have this?
False, hitting I’m ready button doesn’t start the game faster, it’s a remnant from beta no one knows what really happens if everyone hits it.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the match start instantly when everyone hits the “I am ready” button.
Seems only fair no?….
I mean why would I leave a legendary just lying around on the ground?
Wait what, a game starts sooner if everyone clicks “I am ready”?
Today I learned….
Yes! See, this is exactly what I’m talking about. Lots of people simply don’t get the idea of the “I am ready” button. So why not change the way it works?
If the game starting immediately is a problem, let there be a 5 seconds warning with a big sound that the game will start in 5 seconds. Anyone who wants to “unready” themselves can do so.
Problem solved.
I agree. Hotjoin is awesome. Give people the choice between 5v5 and 8v8 while preferring 5v5 for automatic placements and everything is fine.
Ignore those calling for hotjoin to end. They don’t like others enjoying themselves. They would rather place some ideal of “teamwork” and “how it’s meant to be played” etc etc above what people actually like to do.
We all spend a lot of time waiting for the match to start even when everyone is present. A lot of people don’t know/forget to indicate that they’re ready. Change the default to “I am ready” since most people really are ready. That way we can save quite a bit of time.
If someone is specifically not ready, let them make the choice to hit the other button.
I’d like to know if it’s ok to report a person AFK in matches as a bot. After all, the hallmark of a bot is minimum mechanical involvement to get the rewards that others work for.
Now I know of course that sometimes bad things happen during a match (doorbell etc) and a person simply has to go AFK. Of course, the algorithm should see how often that happens and whether or not the person is making it a habit…
I can kill just about anyone with my phantasm mesmer. I must admit though that sometimes well played necro minion masters give me a headache since they can have absolutely insane regen and a huge pool of life.
If my understanding is correct, in solo arena the game will try and place you with those who are at your skill level. Meaning that as you get better, you will face harder and harder opponents. And yet, the glory/rank rewards seem to be the same for all matches regardless of the “tier” you play on.
Shouldn’t the rewards be proportional to your skill level? Like getting 500 glory/rank from the box if you’re in a higher tier compared to just the same 150?
I just sit down or start dancing when the game is over. No point wasting my effort illogically since I don’t care what happens to my toon as there are no consequences anymore.
Your argument is fallacious.
The game is balanced for 5v5, both on a class basis, and the in terms of the map size/layout. 8v8 gives players a skewed impression of PvP interactions. It might be fun to kitten around, but if all you do is 8v8, you’re going to get a very poor impression of the game itself. Classes won’t seem balanced properly, maps will seem off, etc etc etc.
It’s about whats good for the game and the playerbase in the long run, not what’s “fun right now” for some.
He’s saying it’s fun for the majority of people and that we have no right to tell others what they should be enjoying.
If a Thief runs to reset then you win, it’s as simple as that. The players who moan that they didn’t get to stomp them and get their 5 copper reward are just bad players who don’t understand that resetting benefits both parties equally.
I have this great idea for the next world championship chess match. The rule is that the defending champion can just “reset” the game whenever they want, but the other guy has to keep playing at the former’s discretion.
After all, resetting the game benefits both parties equally…
Of course, some will go with the “solution”: join a guild and ask hep. This kind of answer strips you off your dignity as a hero and transforms you into a beggar at others mercy
This. GW2 is missing the sense of making you a lone hero trying to save the world. You’re not special. Just another one of the masses. Which is why I now only play hotjoin where I can feel special by killing people without depending on others.
One of the things I loved about the original Guild Wars was the ability to play all content without having to bother with other players. I could enter a dungeon, go for a lunch break in the middle, and come back with all my heroes still waiting around. And I could repeat this forever. The play was entirely at my pace and at my discretion.
It also gave me an additional layer of progression. Now that I have my legendary and ascended weapons I have nothing more to do. It would be awesome to have to do this with 4 other NPCs and would keep me around much longer. Just imaging tricking out your heroes with ascended gear – it would take forever!
Of course, in an open world you can’t have players running around with an army of NPCs. But for instanced content, it should surely be possible.
As a side note, I loved the instanced areas of the original GW1 where you got vanquisher titles. In GW2, I find the presence of other players bothersome.
So what do you think, should Anet allow us to have hero NPCs with us?
You’re asking other players -who you find “bothersome”- whether they should agree with your opinion of basically making GW2 a single player game? That’s a hypocritical question stacked upon a hypocritical way of asking; the double hypocrisy!
Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG: Massively MULTIPLAYER Online Role Playing Game. If you don’t like playing a game with other players, then you’re in the completely wrong genre. May want to look into games like Mass Effect, or anything Bioware. Those games are all designed to have NPC agents and almost no player interaction (including SW:TOR).
But, as for GW2, it’ll stay a MMORPG. Tough luck in trying to change it into something it’s not.
I’m not saying there shouldn’t be an option to team up if you want. People teamed up all the time in GW1. It was still an MMO. The difference being that you could also solo 99% of the content – only areas like DoA etc were tough. And I remember some specialists soloing those areas as well.
Err no. The Dynamic event system and no mob tagging/stealing makes any kind of npc assistants worthless. Not to mention they will make the game unstable, imagine a big event like Tequatl with double the amount of players, ouch that will certainly hurt. And besides, most mobs in the open world appear alone, can be pulled alone and can be fought alone. They rarely come in teams, unless in an event, making teams with npcs pointless.
I already mentioned in the first post that NPCs in the open world makes no sense. I’m only talking about instanced content like dungeons. And maybe every zone can have a separate mode where everything can be killed with 5 people. That would be awesome. We can have a vanquisher title like in the original guild wars for those who’ve killed everything in every zone!
