Without a guaranteed badge drop, what is the motivation for me to engage and kill anyone? Many times I’ll go for several kills without getting a single badge. Far more time efficient to just farm the jumping puzzles everyday isn’t it?
the motivation is……so the other world that is trying to take your keep/tower/camp fail….
But how do I personally benefit? Say because I kill someone my team gets a tower…. So what? It’s not enough motivation when you don’t really benefit in any way no?

i have a surprisingly good MM staff build for farming points, its tanky, and hits everything in a large radius (also granting regen/removing conditions from allies)
stand back and spam 1-5, i constantly get 300+ points with this build due to the mass of aoe and minions helping to tag everything.
http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=;0_-34;0sHkD0z3VI-K0;9;4J-TJ-48;241916;2a;5jwmAjwmA9ca (i never switch weapon)
(you could also switch the minion bonus health for the minion boon removal trait if you want to be a bane to bunkers!)
you need to copy and paste the link into your browser since the GW2 site doesn’t like links from the mists XD
Thanks! Isn’t this very vulnerable to AoE? You don’t seem to have taken the lower recharge for minion skills so it’s a bit long between summons no?
I know you said you don’t have a ranger, but I can get over 300 points with my Jagaur Ranger build. It’s a wonderful build because you are essentially a bunker, but your pet can do 5000 damage if you stealth(he gets 100% crit in stealth) him and then put “Sic em” on at the right moment. It’s all about the timing. The ranger is great in spvp because of the bow so you can just shoot people from far away while they are ignoring you and kill them with your pet. It is also fantastic 1v1. I can kill anyone including bunkers 1v1 except condi necros and hgh engi’s. And beginner necros in condi are not that hard either. It’s also great in tpvp because I can sit on our point and survive against 2 people long enough for the team to come help. I highly reccomend the build if you play phantasm mes, which I did for quite some time before trying this build. If you don’t like the ranger, they’re is always the in-between Guardian build, which is great dueling at points.
I’ll be sure to get a ranger someday and keep this in mind
Based on your criteria engi should work fine, perma swiftness will be enough for mobility
That’s great. Any particular build you have in mind? I don’t usually take my characters into PvP unless I’ve leveled them to 80 in PvE first. My current engineer is very new – just lvl 8 so I’m not very familiar with the mechanics yet…
What the most amount of points you have scored in hotjoin with your Mesmer because I reckon I’ll have more on my necro.
I can consistently get above 200 on my mesmer, and often come close to 300. With my necro I found that running between points is the bottleneck…
What’s your experience?
of course it is unbalanced in 1v1 situations, because it is intended to be about TEAMS.
I keep hearing this but never with any proof. Citation please.
It’s no secret that hotjoins are superior to tPvP for rank points. And since rank points are the only form of game progression in GW2 PvP, hotjoin is obviously the most crucial activity in the PvP world and we have to believe that Anet designed it this way on purpose.
I get good rank points by running a phantasm mesmer with runes of the centaur for mobility. But I’m bored and want to try something else. I like necros, but the lack of mobility between points really sucks and I’m not able to get as much glory as I get on my mesmer.
I also have a guardian, warrior, and engi. No rangers, thieves, or eles. So which class or build (other than a mesmer) is ideal for squeezing maximum rank points out of hotjoin. Based on what I’ve seen, here are a few criteria:
1. Good mobility to run between points and to catch the last few seconds of an already occupied point.
2. Good 1v1 capabilities since I only join 5v5s. Lots of dueling opportunities.
Maybe there are others, but I’d like to hear your thoughts on this. I’d like to play my guardian or engi but I’m concerned about mobility.
And what about those of us who want to rank up without having to bother with playing in a team?
Why does everyone assume that PvP needs to be team based?
This pretty much sums up why hotjoin is a plague pit that is avoided at all costs, and why tourniments are now being filled with mesmers who GS auto attack with little else, even ignoring stomps etc etc.
Because its a team based game, that’s why you need to play as a team. You don’t even need to talk to them, in fact, turn off chat if that’s your thing, but try to play the points and don’t wander with the largest group looking for easy zerg kills.
It’s a “team based game” only because you say it is. There’s nothing preventing Anet from formalizing dueling as a separate game mode.
Why are people so militant about “team based play” anyway? What benefit does it confer?
Btw, you get more rank points in hotjoin than in tPvP. Just saying.
And what about those of us who want to rank up without having to bother with playing in a team?
Why does everyone assume that PvP needs to be team based?
Just waiting for formalized dueling with rank points and progression so we can remove the necessity of teams forever.
You’re absolutely right. I thought these things as well. When doing the heart quests, you sometimes have very dystopian instructions such as keep the population happy by tearing down posters, “talk” to rabble rousers (who usually have very legitimate grudges) etc. It kind of kitten me off.
Also, to complete daily kill variety, harmless animals like rabits and rats count as well. What the hell? Big macho guy/ powerful sorcerer with legendary weapons going out of their way to take the lives of…insects? Ravens?
Someone at Anet needs to read a little more history methinks…
“AdvanceSkillTarget” in the options is one of your best friends against minion classes…
If only it worked with stealth, lol.
What is advanceskilltarget?
I think it’s actually called “PromoteSkillTarget” in the menu(I think*), but anyways…
It locks your target when you use a skill on them. If you hit a minion by accident you won’t auto target the minion.
Ah yes, I use this already
Mesmers stomping a thief. If you’re good you can pull this off and enjoy the look of surprise. Equip blink. When the thief teleports during the stomp and you have around a second left, you can instantly teleport to the new location to get the stomp.
I’ve done this so many times and it’s a lot of fun

I believe this is the basis for the immortal mesmer build: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Guide-The-Immortal-Mesmer-Build/first
I don’t know how many other people feel this way. Hotjoin is the fastest way to accumulate rank and glory points even compared to tPvP not to mention that points acquired from tournaments somehow inexplicably don’t count towards the PvP Conqueror title. And for hotjoins I get the maximum points using my phantasm mesmer which can easily beat any 1v1 player who comes up against me.
The problem is I feel guilty when I beat guardians, warriors, eles, necros etc with so much ease. I feel that these guys are playing skillfully, sometimes lasting a surprisingly long time and me…I just run around spawning phantasms, stealthing, blocking, and being invulnerable. I ocassionaly feel they deserved to win due to their level of play but were simply hamstrung by the fact that they were up against a phantasm mesmer.
Sometimes I fight engineers who really put up a fight. They blind, regenerate health quickly and it’s obvious they’re doing a lot to stay alive but eventually they fall, unable to keep up with my damage output. I get a lot of points in hotjoin this way usually being the top player if everything goes well.
Isnt’ this kind of…cheap? I can even decimate so called “1v1 stars” like thieves in seconds. 10 seconds is a long fight with a thief and they’re usually on the ground or have run by the end of that.
I’m going to do whatever it takes to get max rank points so I doubt if I’ll change from a phantasm mes, but…does anyone else feel the way I do?
Just be glad there’s no capricorn. I’ll forgive everything else.
It would also be nice if we could see which team was capping. Right now we are only informed that a point is being contested by the cross-swords icon on top of the screen, but not by which team.
This will probably be difficult because if a point is contested, players from both teams might be on it…In which case no single team is capping it.
True, but instead of the white contested circle make it fill gradually with the color of the team camping it. If there are players from both tens inside it could simply be white or show the among of caping by a team. I.e. 5% blue, if it is not “growing” it means that players from both teams are in the circle.
In theory it’s awesome, not sure it’s easy to implement. Although it exists in other games.
Good idea. Basically just a miniature version of what we normally see when we’re standing close to a point.

As of now, it’s only when you get really close to a cap point do you see what percentage is capped. But frequently if I’m at a distance, I need to know if there’s enough time remaining for me to go join the guys on the point before it’s capped so I can get my 10 points.
Or if I’m fighting someone and I see at the top a point somewhat closeby is greyed out with swords on it, I’d like to know if I’ll gain anything by making the trip to complete the cap (as long as no opposing team member is on it of course).
It’d be nice to be able to make informed decisions like that so we can maximize our glory and rank points in hotjoin.
P.S: Obviously this has nothing to do with tPvP where you just want one person in the circle for capping.
I’m an r40 mesmer. I’ve played the class since the beginning and it’s far and away my favorite. I’ve played a shatter mes, a phantasm mes and pyro’s immortal build. So without question…I love it.
But as I play sPvP I’m just…seeing too many of them. Often more than half the entire playing population will be mesmers. Not enough guardians, rangers, engineers, and necromancers (went the whole day today without seeing as single necro). It makes me think something’s seriously wrong somewhere that needs fixing.
I don’t like fighting mesmers all the time. Too many clones, too much target breaking – and yes, I use these tactics myself all the time. But I want some nice variety as well. Is it because we are:
1. Easy to play?
2. Lots of damage?
3. Plenty of Survivability?
4. Just easy to confuse others?
I’m willing to do what it takes to maintain the integrity of the game even if that means I may have to give up something. What do you think the problem is?
Guild Wars 2 is NOT a team based game. Just because you have the option to play in a team does not make it team based. When I roll a phantasm mesmer in hotjoin, I couldn’t care less about the team and I usually end up getting the highest rank points of everyone in the arena.
What was that about “team based” game again?
Yeay i get the highest glory in hotjoin so i’m sooo good….
Not even worth an answer, i don’t like flaming ppl to death…
Since the entire goal of PvP is get rank points, I think it’s pretty obvious that those who get the most are the best.
Do we really need to debate this?
“Rank Points” are meaningless… if you lose game matches, your footing on the leaderboards attenuates.
Losing/winning matches is a reflection of your team not personal skill. I think it’s pretty absurd that leaderboards are individual based for matches that are not really individual skill related.
Rank points are the only measurable form of progress in the game along with better gear etc. Ergo, the person with max rank points is by definition the best PvP player.
You are the bad player who stays on points to cap them with 2 other people just to accumulate points.
You’re forgetting that the purpose of the game is to accumulate points not to win the match. That’s tPvP you’re thinking of and in tPvP I don’t stand on a point if someone else is there.
Apparently there are some people who like to play just for “fun”, but that’s not a viewpoint I can truly understand. Still, to each his own.

Aaand no…simple question, have you ever played a bunker in tornament? I guess not…honour points at the end of the match usually show who dealt more dmg around, that’s why roaming classes (Even better if using aoes) always get more points…you can just go hotzerg running here and there spamming random dmg during teamfights without downing a single enemy and get the highest score. Does it mean you’re good? Off course not…i can end a match as mid bunker with less than 50 pnts (Happens really often) just because i defended the point all match without letting them to decap it and since i’m not going to kill or roam around i can’t get much, defending points always gives low score but without someone defending them (Even with his ridiculous <50 pnts) all team goes to hell…so judging personal skill watching at end match score is one of the most stupid things someone can do in pvp…and i say this as a r52 probably far higher than yours…
After lots of experimentation I can attest that you can get many more rank points in hotjoin than in sPvP because the matchmaking system keeps pitting you against higher ranked teams the more matches you win and you still get the same 200 glory reward at the end with a 50/50 chance of winning. With hotjoin you can reliably get many many more rank points. Ergo, hotjoin is better than tPvP.
This is the way Anet has set up the system and there seems to be no upcoming changes. So I have to assume that this was their intention all along.
Also you’re kind of negating your own point by saying you’re r52. Meaning you consider yourself good and have a bucketload of rank points. So you’re hardly in a position to diminish the value of rank points in the first place! All things being equal, a higher ranked player has a far better chance of being better than a low ranked player. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
Rank points are the sole goal of PvP just like loot is the sole goal of PvE. Take away loot and no one will play PvE any more. Take away rank points and PvP becomes meaningless.
I say this as an r40 mesmer who loves to kill stuff solo. Enjoy!

Those who claim that you didn’t outplay the thief if he managed to get away are just full of it. There’s no class that can reliably prevent a thief from escaping if they want. By their logic, every single thief who escapes has “outplayed” their opponent.
It’s sad indeed that people don’t have the conviction to play to the end and take the easy way out. IMHO if you initiate a fight and you get beat, the other person deserves to have the kill: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Stop-Running-and-Die-with-Honor/first#post1913655
Having said that, I try and prevent thieves from escaping by hurting their ego. I open chat and /say “lol” or “run run”. I’ve often found this infuriates the thief enough to come back and die to me. Never underestimate the size of a thief’s ego
I run a phantasm build and it’s nice to meet a build that is so dangerous. I was killed quite a lot before I was able to learn how to react to it and I improved my targeting skills to boot. So whoever you are if you’re reading this…thank you.
Basically there was lots of stealth via the torch, mass invis and of course decoy. He also used blink frequently. The idea is to stealth and then suddenly shatter when your opponent has no idea where you are.
I was able to counter by stealthing more often myself and using the mouse to target the mesmer instead of the “tab” key (I use “v” instead). This saves me precious seconds when I can tell who the real mesmer is but can’t target since I have to cycle through all the illusions/clones. Plus a healthy dose of blurred frenzy to protect myself from shatters.
I didn’t ask him exactly what traits he was using, but I assume it was max shatter damage. He used a staff as the other weapon set but not often. It’s surprising how quickly the fight can end if you’re careless.
Had a good time today.
I wonder if this is the person you dueled. His name is Twitchy Toes and he’s on Tarnished Coast. I was surprised by his playstyle also. He plays very well. the way you described the fight, it sounds a lot like this guy.
Not the same guy, but the idea of using the torch to stealth a lot and shatter is the same. The guy I fought had a human character and used a staff/sword+torch. The one in the video wields a greatsword instead.
Very dangerous. The guy I fought was literally “Blink and you’re dead” league. Can’t make a single mistake. I’m thinking of running that myself for fun now.
Incidentally as a mesmer I know I myself rely on stealth to break target, but I’m reminded again how annoying it is to fight a constantly vanishing mesmer. It’s not just the stealth but reacquiring the target amongst so many clones that makes it tough!
Because gear in PvP is a question of bragging rights with those who know how many hours of PvP play it must have taken to get that gear.
Since PvP and PvE share the same armor designs, it would be incredibly misleading and there would be no way to tell the real PvP pros from those who just jumped in from hotjoin.
And Anet is shifting entirely to custom servers so…
Utility Skills: Ether Feast, Blink, Veil, Decoy
Elite: Mass Invis (or Moa)Too bad this is gonna be totally useless in tpvp. Maybe would work in hotjoin…but also there aoe dps>single target dps and since noone gives a crap bout dieing in hotzerg i’ll stick to normal shatter…noone dodges there and you can make a mess with aoe burst…i can only figure this in a 1vs1 situation, but since is not viable for tpvp (Side def for example) you can just use it to duel random ppl outside tournaments and i don’t really see a reason for random worthless duels outside tpvp…
I take it you did not read the thread title: “Phantasm mesmer, unbeatable in 1v1?”
Yes, that’s a 1v1 build, posted in a thread about 1v1.
Sorry but…what’s the actual purpose of an 1vs1 build since 1vs1 is worthless in a team-based game? I figured out 1vs1 as a side point defending situation (Or maybe mid, but there’s always a guardian at mid…and you can’t do kitten vs a decent bunker guardian with a mesmer in a decent amount of time before backup rushes in owning you)…and that’s the only useful contest that comes to mind…outside that 1vs1 is totally unuseful….maybe for hotzerg? But still nonsense since that uber freaking zerg with minions, cats, dogs and kitten is going to rollover you as soon as you stay in one point alone for more that 5 secs…
Btw i usually kill average phantasm mesmers with thief, shatter mez and dps guard…ok i know how mesmer works but all you really need to do is dodging when he’s pointing gs to the sky (izerk incoming), then apply pressure…done. Aoe around is really appreciated too…cluster bomb ftw.
And again…condition dmg is the fastest way to destroy pretty much every mesmer spec around.
Guild Wars 2 is NOT a team based game. Just because you have the option to play in a team does not make it team based. When I roll a phantasm mesmer in hotjoin, I couldn’t care less about the team and I usually end up getting the highest rank points of everyone in the arena.

While I agree that titles are very important and are one of the only reasons I play PvP at all, I don’t think there’s much confusion between “Avenger” and “Avenger of the dispossessed”.
Or just implement a dueling mode and have individual rankings for that.
Hopefully we can do away with all this mandatory “team” business that a lot of people find a nuisance anyway.
Dueling mode boils down to who is the tankiest.
I assure you I can take down any tank with my phantasm build. In any case, we can have a system like in GW1 where in the case of a draw, the more aggressive person wins.
I can’t believe people are feeding this kitten idea. This is probably the dumbest idea ever suggested.
If thieves get punished for failing a skill then so should every other class.
So if thief gets revealed for missing bs warriors should get a 4s cool down on thier auto attack when they miss. All classes should.
Besides, the fact that thieves can spam bs until it lands in no way makes then over powered or gives them any unfair advantage.
While in stealth, our unique stealth skill becomes our auto attack.
Why are so many noobs making kitten threads like this?
Wake me up when an “autoattack” like backstab does the same damage as all other autoattacks in the game.
Don’t call backstab an autoattack just because it’s in your first slot. There’s no comparison.
You take a thief out os stealth on a missed attack, you change the meta so that EVERYONE tries to avoid the backstab,
We can’t have that now can we?
Or just implement a dueling mode and have individual rankings for that.
Hopefully we can do away with all this mandatory “team” business that a lot of people find a nuisance anyway.
Do they include spectators now? It used to show 12/20, could be full with 8 people spectating to create the full 20/20.
^ yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s still not including spectators in the count.
It should incude:
-the # of players currently playing
-the MAX # of players allowed to play
-# of spectators
-total # of people in the room for convenience.
It includes the number of spectators. I’ve seen lots of 5v5 arenas have 12/20 or 17/20 etc. If it didn’t include spectators, then no 5v5 arena should ever show more than 10/20.
can´t play hotjoins because I try to join but it´s full every time. Can´t see the number of players in the hotjoin since the number also includes spectating people or stuff.
With my slow harddrive teams are always full before I can load when a new round starts and searching servers with empty slots is difficult for the reason I already named. It costs me 5 minutes every time i try to join and leave again because it was full due to looong loading times.
Agreed. They need more accurate numbers. If it shows 12/20, I want to know how many are actually playing so I’ll know whether it’s worth my time to enter that room.
I use combat mod mainly because as I writer I’m susceptible to RSI and not having to constantly right click really helps.
Yes, targeting is somewhat problematic but like others I find the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
To improve targeting with combat mod, I:
1. Select “promote target” so I just have to target once and never again
2. Have auto target select on so if a thief comes out of stealth and he’s the only one around I don’t have to manually target
3. Have bound a “target deselect” option so if I accidentally target a mesmer clone I can quickly retarget the real one
4. Practice targeting with the mouse – you just need to get the real guy in the cross hairs
5. I also have a key bound for tabbing whenever appropriate.
GW1 had awesome reward directly linked to PvP play. I could wait for bonus weekends then get zaishen keys that I would sell for around 5-6k each.
Also if you won 5 consecutive rounds you would get reward chests that went for quite a bit as well and could drop rare skins.
Come on Anet! You know how to do it. So why aren’t you?
Necromancer: I thought it was unblockable…
Oh crap necro! Adding one now.
Sorry
Thief: We need more damage! We need more defense! We need more stealth! Mug should do 10k damage!
Guardian: Boon stealing ain’t fair bro. And corrupt boon? I mean seriously?
Rangers: Nerf retaliation. Also pets behave like 2 year olds on a sugar rush.
Engineer: Umm…turrets need improvement. I guess.
Mesmer: Umm…confusion sucks. And can you please do something about the $^&# torch?
Elementalist: Hmm..let’s see. Umm..yeah just a sec. I’ll get back to you. No wait. RTL! Revert RTL nerf!
Necromancer: Wtf give me some mobility! Also, stun breakers so others can’t play “kick the necro”.
Courtesy TheMightyAltroll: “I thought it was unblockable…”
Warrior: This is a joke right? Just kill me already while I sit down and cry.
(edited by bhagwad.4281)
I’m a mesmer and I find them the most annoying class to fight against
Luckily my phantasms are not confused by clones or stealth. Good bye squishy!
Two observations:
1. As a mesmer, I rely on target drop to avoid damage. I rely on the fact that the player has to wait for me to unstealth and then target me again. I deliberately hide behind my clones after unstealthing to make it difficult for opponents to select me and thereby target me. If stealth doesn’t break targeting, I will choose not to stealth at all.
2. Playing against a mesmer just got a whole lot easier. Easy mode with no more target dropping with decoy
. I would be able to crush them! Even as a mesmer, mesmers are my most annoying fights. So it cuts both ways
Watch Vol II in my Sig, I do it twice in the vid. It’s our elite and it takes good timing to pull it off.
Just adding onto this, if the ranger has the Natures Vengeance trait then when their elite spirit dies he will cast the skill a 3rd time which is likely what ended up happening vs you.
Thanks for that bit of info.
i get you on that ….its a lil pride. they should implement a new system for scoring where invidvidual kills and kill streaks could add to the score somehow. then i would say…yeah thieves are too strong at roaming and are causing problem all over. if u wanna run solo ur gonna die. thief or not. just a matter of time b4 u get outnumbered. thief is good at 1 v 1 which has no place in guild wars 2……yet they suck horribly in zerg play….. what if they were traded. what if thief was doing like 4k dmg to everyone in an AOE skill? then did a 2 sec AOE stun with a 3 sec AOE immob at same time . yet they sucked at 1 v 1/? would u still cry? yes….lose lose situation for thieves. just erase them…its the only way QQrs will smile. babies :P im an amazing thief at S/D P/D and D/P…..but even i lose 1 v 1s to great players. it happens.
Oh I’m not afraid of thieves anymore. I run the immortal mesmer build and no thief can get me down without dying of retaliation
. Or if I run my phantasm mesmer it’s even easier to kill them. Naturally I can’t prevent a thief from running away, but still…
I was just responding to the assertion that 1v1 doesn’t matter. I really don’t care about which server is on top. All I know is that I should personally be able to take care of myself 1 on 1.
Was he using Spirit of Nature? It’s activated skill revives all nearby downed allies after a short casting time. With good timing, a ranger can activate the skill, be downed during the cast time, and then be revived by his own elite skill.
Yeah he was using a spirit, but like I said I don’t have much experience with rangers…
WHO CARES ABOUT ROAMING!? IT CHANGES NOTHING! IF YOU GO IN A WVW SETTING WHERE YOU CAN FACE UP TO 150 ENEMIES WHY WOULD YOU TRAVEL ALONE IN THE FIRST PLACE!
GoD! a thief is good at 1 v 1 which matters nothing anywhere in the game and is SUPER TERRIBLE at group play. so lets make them super bad at group play AND super easy to defeat at 1 v 1 too? wtf is the point in this its stupid. plain and simple. im done playing if they mess this up. as a consumer and osmebody who spends money ont his game now and then….i expect a FULL rework of thieves if they do this. if not im moving to the next game no big deal. i mean i like my guardian too but not as much. i played monk in gw1 and assassin as backup. this game has no monks. so i was sad about that….thief was closest thign to assassin so i picked that thinking it my be fun and now its a joke.
I care about roaming. I would rather my server lose than get killed 1v1 from behind without any warning
1v1 is personal. It matters. Zergs dying…I couldn’t care less.
So I was playing this ranger around 15 mins ago and he kept self reviving almost instantly. It happened three times before I was finally able to take him down for good.
I have no experience with rangers, but I presume it was a spirit of some kind? And you can ask it to revive you when you die? That’s pretty neat!
If it were up to me, glory would be awarded only for winning the game. Nothing for losers, and nothing for “minor objectives” which don’t reflect, promote or help shape competitive play and teamwork.
If you’re talking hotjoin, this is a horrible idea. I don’t want my acquisition of rank points have to depend on my teammates. And soon we’ll have premades vs pug in hotjoin as well.
No thank you. Hotjoin is a place for playing PvP solo without going to the bother of playing with a team. If you want strategy etc, please go to tPvP.
