I can understand why he feels as he does. Roxx is basically dismissing him completely in favour of people who she doesn’t know and who will treat her as a nameless newbie.

Of course, that’s what charr like. They like to be a part of a greater whole, like a cog in the war machine that is their legion. It’s the exact opposite to the norn mindset, where one person is their own nation.

Braham has passed beyond that, somewhat, in that he clearly values his companions and wants more of a group legacy than an individual one. Roxx, however, seems very quick to dismiss the personal connections and is like “yeah, whatever”, so I can see why he is upset. Roxx values her pet devourer more than him, I would suspect.

So why do people still fail marionette?

chronometria.3708

It has come to the point where the number of inexperienced and poorly geared players has tipped the balance of the event towards repeated failure.

I watched helplessly today as a player made a choice between finishing a champion that was on 5 percent health and rezzing someone who was dead. By their gear and class, it was clearly someone who had panicked and who chose to rez the player because they were more comfortable when someone else was making the decisions. Even our shouting from the other platform wasn’t enough to shake them out of this choice in time, despite there being another player desperately tanking the champ and needing support from them to land the finishing blow.

I`m also seeing teams that actually follow the required plan, but whose gear and spec are too poor to actually bring the foe down in time. People are shouting “lead it into the mines” and all the usual things, but the champion is actually stunned, its just not getting enough incoming damage to take it down in time.

The effective players are moving from lane to lane as best they can, but even though they are killing their champs, they cant remove the ineffective players who are bringing everyone down.

Sadly, I see this PvE bunker mindset as the very reason that marionette fails so much. It breeds a lack of adaptability and a reliance on repeated abilities. I despair when I see that people want precursors to become another legendary. By the time I get to needing my precursor, I`ve already done the dungeon grind and materials collection thing at least once. I shouldn’t have to do the gifts twice, I`d like to do something different. I don’t mind it being involved or time consuming, but as was said above, if it is actually easier to just buy a precursor, then the point has been missed.

It’s one part of the legendary, its not half of one or a legendary in itself.

Genderless small races in games

in Asura

Posted by: chronometria.3708

chronometria.3708

You make good points Rhyse and on reading what you have put, your final line does raise an interesting matter – the demand for attractiveness, which, in theory, is something that we as players have an influence on.

Since even the early days of games like everquest, there has been a set of races to balance the “small race” and that tends to be the “large race” or “ugly race”. Trolls, ogres and other giant types. Bringing those into the discussion is important.

Another element is that size often equates to intellect. Thus the small races, gnomes, goblins, chua from wildstar and asura from guildwars, all tend to be scientist types. By contrast the large races are often primitive in their mindset, often being tribal but having a sort of earthy wisdom. Shamanism, in most mmo’s, is the province of a large race, much as it is with our norns, warcrafts tauren and everquest’s ogres.

It’s unfortunate that there are so many dug in stereotypes for mmos that we need to break out of. How much of this is demand from players, though and how much is simply following the herd of mmo development?

Living (Story) in a Griefer's Paradise?

chronometria.3708

You say griefing, we say war.

WvW players get poor loot and are forced into content they often don’t like just to get the very weapons they fight with. Long have we been the second class citizens of guildwars 2 and when content is added for us, its usually when something (orbs, quaggans) is taken away.

WvW keeps this game alive. The transfer fees paid by wvw guild migration are considerable and as structured-pvp is rapidly dieing out, wvw is where the pvp side of this game is headed. When Wildstar comes out, WvW will be what holds this game together, or what sinks it if a better home for us is offered. Its about time we got some kudos for the things we do to keep the pve side of the game alive.

So I say unto those venturing into the edge of the mists – come armed and come determined enough that when you fall, you get back up and you hunt out the one who felled you so that you can drive him or her from the mists and into the hands of Grenth himself.

The time to ignore us is over – you`re in our world now.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/30/guild-wars-2-edge-of-the-mists-qanda-with-devon-carver/

While account-bound World XP was originally intended to go live along with EotM, the highly anticipated change will not be making it into next week’s release.

To be fair they never actually confirmed that WXP would be released with EotM.
The only thing they have ever said was that it would be TESTED together with EotM. But I suppose claiming that they are lying gives a better effect.

Testing something with EOTM suggests that it either works and thus comes out with it, or doesn’t work and that we would be told about that instead.

As such, the reason people are suspicious is because of a lack of communication. If people were simply told “we tried and had trouble”, which was what they said about changing the WvW achievements, then people would probably be fine with it.

Genderless small races in games

in Asura

Posted by: chronometria.3708

chronometria.3708

I was browsing the wildstar beta information that has been coming out and was interested to see that when they initially came out, the wildstar small race, the Chua, had no gender selection button. Though there was apparently a small amount of feminine options to choose from, they chose to eliminate gender from the race altogether (which may still be the case).

Asura have single gendered clothing, though we at least get a gender and voice choice, but when I saw that the latest game to have a small race was also treating gender as bad it got me thinking – why is this phenomenon affecting new games to come out?

Are game designers now so afraid of the childlike race issue that they are simply choosing to neuter small races? Are we, as players of small races, soon going to find that we are labelled as abnormal or unwanted in some way?

What are your thoughts on this and what can we do to reverse it?

Marionette gives rewards even if one chain is broken, which was quite achievable. Hence, even on an almost total fail, people still got something and kept at it. Even tequatl is like this, with partial success being rewarded.

Wurm gives nothing, despite being harder, longer and more dangerous. In theory it too gives a partial reward, but the way it is tuned means you either get an outright win or a total fail.

I`d strongly advise anyone to keep away from the wurm fight until some tuning is done to it.

Speculation on runes and sigils is not smart. 99% of the speculators who didn’t invest before the twitch stream will crash and burn. Many have already. I personally pushed the newly inflated price of one rune into oblivion just because I still had a stack of it lying around.

I highly doubt they will nerf generosity in any way.

Even a low-volume item such as sigil generosity can be tweaked into nothingness; not likely, but very, very possible. Sigil of purity/nullification could also be changed to become more useful, leaving generosity with a lot if competition.

I guess all I’m saying is: don’t risk it. Mind you: afterwards, only the success stories will come out; the people who failed won’t advertise it.

One cannot really say whether or not they have “crashed and burned” till we find out what runes go up in value. Perhaps better to have held onto that large amount of runes you had till after the changes are revealed. Likewise, pushing their price into oblivion just means giving more people the chance to make a profit on it if their hunch turns out to be right.

A new pale tree shows up and warns us of the rise of a sixth dragon.

I think that Rox and Braham are reasonably well accepted by players. They are relatively capable, don’t make big claims about their status and get on with the job as best they can with the occasional “hulk smash” moment. They are very much like the average adventurer.

As to Kasmeer and Marjorie, they are interesting enough with their strange relationship and the fact that one is clever and the other a bit clueless. They make a fun enough pairing.

Redeeming the Watchknights

in Living World

Posted by: chronometria.3708

chronometria.3708

A reddit chat about the two watchknights that are hung up in divinity’s reach got me thinking – the watchknights are very cool and I would like to see them remain and evolve in the story. I want them to be more than just “metal stormtroopers”.

A lot of work went into making the knights and the Queen herself adopted the idea of having them as the new human army. They are, we presume, resistant to dragon energies, tireless and hard to kill. We know that they can be adapted with Mesmer magic to do all manner of sneaky things, so they are more than just grunt troops. It is true that Scarlet made use of them as part of her evil clockwork plan, but then, the inquest has used golems for evil, yet the asura do not abandon the golem concept. They are not evil in themselves, they are just tools that can be and were misused.

The Asura or the charr who are clockwork engineers, or even humans like Uzolan, could redeem the watchknights. It would be very fitting if they were used against scarlet and became a part of the human or charr storyline. I am sure players would be interested in a story arc where the watchknights are explored in depth and efforts are made to strike back at scarlet with her own weapons. It would be a fitting end for her to be cut down by her own means, out-thought rather than simply zerged.

Fans of space opera will like the idea, too, of sentient droids. Perhaps, as an interesting twist to the new destiny’s edge backup team (rox, braham and co), they could be joined by a watchknight that has evolved, resistant to scarlets tampering. It is a common but much loved idea that an “assassin droid” or other once negative mechanical becomes a part of the heroic team, with all the ups and downs that such an icon creates. It would need to speak of course, but who is to say that the watchknights cannot evolve or be given that function?

Adding an asura to the mix is next on their list and as I play asura that’s great. But I want to see watchknights back on our side or with a unique one as part of the new heroic lineup. Please arenanet, make it happen. It uses the amazing npc you have created and adds it to the storyline in a satisfying way rather than leaving all that work to be forgotten once the arc is over.

The general feel is sometimes that the game server is treating some characters or players in different ways, prioritising some in a semi- predictable manner and ignoring or delaying others. When you are in a “good spot” with a lack of lag, then it doesn’t matter where you go or what you do, so long as you don’t log off or waypoint, as that puts you once again at risk of the issue.

Pretty much this.

There have been numerous reports where two people playing on the same connection, only one account experiences problems. Even if the two persons “switch seats”, the account with issues will continue to have issues even from another computer.

Indeed and the switch seats examples are very concerning. Two people swap computers and the lag follows the account, it doesn’t then affect the person who logs in on the “trouble computer”. The lag is account bound and ignores location and computer specs.

There is talk in the living story forum about the latest asuran news.

That is that a new and apparently unseen asuran character is going to be introduced to the cast of heroic characters that forms the destiny’s edge backup team (Rox, Braham et al).

While this may be somewhat of a double topic, I do think it is important to raise the issue here in that it may well affect how asura are portrayed in the game. It is possible that we are getting a “comedy” asura character that some have compared to jar jar binks. We may get a scary insane asura or we may be pleasantly surprised and get a proper, rounded asuran character that has some depth and is worthy of racial representation.

I really hope that our race comes out well from this and its a positive move to have such a character….but I cant help but feel a little worried at what may come to pass.

Cuteness - inversely linked to intellect?

chronometria.3708

Fellow Asura,

I come before you with a deep and sincere concern, a scholar’s concern and a concern that touches upon the very core of what it means to be one of our people.

This forum, which began as a way to express and discuss the love of our people and of all their many facets, has turned into a collection of “who is da cutest?” discussions.

I shall not stand for this and thus, I postulate a radical theory that will shake this forum to its very foundations. My theory is that our race is, through a process of bookah cultural shift, exchanging intellect for so called cuteness and thus becoming progressively more stupid in an attempt to win favour with the lesser races.

The “cuter” an asura is, the less intelligent they become and some of our intellectually lacking racial members are using the social acceptance of the cute state to infiltrate our academia and hierarchy, thereby spreading the “taint of cute” at terrible cost.

I urge you to stand up against this tide and to fight back, lest our race be denigrated to the status of the quaggan, a culture based around a complete reliance on other groups to survive and a popular line of backpack accessories.

What is interesting with this problem is that it seems to have a “shape” or definition that many players report experiencing.

For example, most of us will agree that it gets worse as the day goes on, with far less problems in the morning, moving towards its peak at about 7-9 pm. It is clearly provoked by moving towards other players or mob groups and some characters seem unaffected wheras others on the same account are troubled by it. Some maps trigger it and maps with less traffic tend not to.

Lastly, I think we all agree that its guildwars specific. We gamers tend to know our pings and have a variety of games that are hosted in various places. Guildwars is frequently the only game where we are having this issue. Many of us seem to agree that this problem cleared up a while ago, for a brief time, when the “improvements for large fights” were put in….but that recently it has returned and is worse than ever.

It’s definitely not a random thing, but has, as I mentioned earlier, a “shape” to it, where most folks can agree on the “rules” of its behaviour. Its frustrating that this clearly not random issue is still so elusive. I will be very happy when it is finally identified, so that we can give a name and understanding to that which we are suffering in such large numbers.

red guards are not new players. red guards is not a new guild. they are kitten epic and fight on our side

As a Piken Commander I somewhat despair at seeing this. Redguard do not fight on our side. They do not care for Piken, they just happen to be on our server for now and they`ll leave as soon as they can just like the last time.

They left and I was on the front line fighting against them when they came to farm piken friendlies and to our credit, we did fairly well against them all things considered.

So I`m not going to jump for joy because Redguard are only on their own side and in a short time they’ll likely be fighting against us just like the last time. They are glory hunters, lacking in loyalty to anything but the concept of their own fame. The sooner they move on from Piken, the better, as far as I am concerned.

It’s not an issue of “don’t buy it”, its an issue of “we don’t want gw2 to go out of business, please put good items in the gem store”.

I couldn’t care if my local jewellery store sells junk and goes out of business, but if my dad owned the store, I sure as heck would be telling him to sort it out and that’s the issue here.

Making money with the gem store should be fairly simple, but as it is we are seeing many items pulled from it and each of those took some development time and used up more time by sitting on the shelves unsold. None of that is good for the game.

Players have been quite clear on these forums as to what they need and what they wil pay, often pay well, for. Decent normal town clothes themed to the setting for one – look how popular the winter outfits were and still are. Complete items is another – I would have bought at least one of the shirts if the matching pants in their advertising picture actually existed, for example.

Face tattoos could be a great item and a big money spinner. They aren’t even hard to create as they are extremely simple in nature. Why isn’t it being done right and thus making the money for gw2 that it easily could?

Arenanet should not be surprised that the atmosphere of those forums became so negative, because they were the cause of it.

The league was designed in such a way that people had to go to extreme lengths to help their servers. People went nights without sleep, commanders were regularly hammered and insulted if they didn’t get results and many servers resorted to hacking, including DDOS attacks and organised E-Warfare on enemy communications.

People threw everything into winning the leagues and arenanet was encouraging them to do this with the promise of what seemed to be significant rewards and a very limited number of servers that could qualify for them. Had it been “top five” and not “top three” that alone would have taken a huge amount of pressure out of the system, especially as people already knew who would win and the real fighting was for the third place slots.

It bred hatred, desperation and frustration and that spilled over onto the forum posts in predictably large amounts. It was a bloodbath out there and the forums gave an indication of just how ugly it was getting on the battlefield and in guild/ server politics.

Compounding this was the fact that certain servers were routinely matched against one another. Seafarers and piken square on the EU, for example and those two servers are now rabidly set against one another because of this. Had the leagues seen fairer matchups, then that too would have taken off a lot of pressure. Instead old foes are routinely at one another’s throats with no end in sight and the current matchmaking system is going to add to that yet again.

If you give a pack of starving dogs a bone, you cant then scold them for turning on one another as they fight to get it.

Why are Town Clothes being Removed?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: chronometria.3708

chronometria.3708

Town clothes were a good idea that was very poorly executed.

They tended to be one or more of the following.

1 – Completely inappropriate to the setting – (Eg modern clothing)
2 – Gimmick, silly items – (Eg Boxing Gloves, chef outfit)
3 – Incomplete – (Eg The shirts that should have had matching pants)
4 – Made you go bald – (Any of the hats).
5- Too seasonal – (Eg Witches outfit)

Pretty much the only decent pieces of town clothing were the smart winter outfits, which could be worn all year round at a push and were nice on asura as they actually gave them a skirt. I was really annoyed with the shirts, as I loved them and despite the pants being shown in the pictures…..the pants were not there, so wearing the shirt just looked daft. Clearly the pants exist as they were pictured on avatars.

As a roleplayer, I would have happily spent a lot on town clothes but instead found they were made for a target audience I just couldn’t understand. Had we seen beachware, wedding attire, a selection of nice casualwear and some technicians or mechanics clothes I am sure many a gem would have been purchased. City of heroes used to sell outfit packs and they made a mint on them. Lessons should have been learned there.

Need Asura Ear Advice

I like ears that look a little like wings. There are several ear options where they have a nice crescent curve to them and stick out to the side of the head rather than drooping. I feel that this makes me feel more aerodynamic, suggesting mental and physical quickness.

Asura men may say they go for the “big floppies”, but really, its the sharp curve that the discerning male will turn to if he has genuine taste in females.

The Elementalist: A beautiful disaster

I put my ele on hold and rolled warrior a while back. I`m cautiously positive of the coming changes, but it saddens me how long it has taken even to get these small steps and how clumsy those initial changes were.

Take diamond skin, for example. The proposed change, requiring that the ele remain over 90 percent of hitpoints to become immune to conditions, showed how little the developers appreciated the elementalist’s tiny health pool. Most powers that gave conditions would instantly bypass it as they were applied alongside damage that, to an ele, would be over that ten percent. That is ignoring all other sources of damage, which in most settings will be coming in thick and fast.

Ten percent to a warrior would have been fine, but on an ele, the percentages were meaning something different and it was as if nobody realised that. This, to me, showed a grievous lack of understanding of the issues the class faced.

As a staff ele who actually invested in trees like the fire tree, I couldn’t get the blasting staff trait. So I like that it is being moved low down in the arcane tree. Even so, fire is a desperately lacking tree and I`m going to be speccing out of most of it and about time, according to most of my peers. I was making a fair living as a condition ele, but even that was poor.

Why is it that staff earth one doesn’t renew bleed? I now play a rifle warrior and every auto-shot I fire inflicts bleed. Just making that one change would make condition staff so much better….but that change isn’t tabled to occur and I just don’t understand why.

Heck, make that the grandmaster earth trait and I`d still be happy. As it is, a condition ele struggles to inflict the very conditions it is supposed to be built around.

I will try out the new changes….but I sense I`m going to be on my warrior for a long while yet.

EU Gold League Final

To Piken Square, indeed you were really unlucky having to fight SFR and VZ so many times. I just hope you can understand there was nothing personal in any of the matchups we had and even more i hope we can bury the hatchet and build mutual respect once again.

We shall bury the hatchet….firmly in the skull of seafarers server whenever we meet them.

As it stands we are spending much of our server meetings discussing issues like how we are having to move and protect our teamspeak because of the ddos attacks that your server chooses to use on others. Seafarers is a server that cannot be trusted, on the battlefield or off of it and they have rightfully earned their bad reputation.

There will be no magically happy land in which your server is forgiven for their poor attitude, disreputable tactics and general backstabbing in combat. Any server with good sense will exterminate you whenever the opportunity arises and it is entirely your doing in forcing their hand in this way.

So just accept that and do not fool yourself that it will ever be otherwise, Kresh.

EU Gold League - No Third Place

In EU Gold league we have a winner, two joint second place servers and two joint fourth place servers. From what I can see that means the two servers who should be in joint third have been cheated out of a bronze placing.

This simply isn’t fair, especially if there is a joint silver.

Please can the EU gold league situation be looked at and reconsidered as currently its upsetting a lot of people who worked very hard for that third place recognition.
