I think if all dead players got greyed out, reviving would be hard. you can’t tell friends from foe in a major battles with lots of casualties. A mass pile of grey would leave at least some having to respawn.

Only thing i can think of is darkening the same color when dead. Still won’t be that much of a distinction.

Ya, I was all for graying out enemies and leaving allies the same.

But who knows, even just darkening them a good deal when dead would be a big improvement.

I threw “please change the nametags of defeated enemies to gray” in the suggestion forums in the beta and encountered a similar lack of support.

very annoying at times seeing 20 red names and only 1 or 2 are alive in the group. particularly chaotic when a lot of allies are in the mix as is common in large fights in WvW.

Its not just kicking people from a party.

Its the entire functionality of right clicking someone’s name beyond reporting them.

Maguuma is 3 rank points away from tier 2.

if you guys can push hard enough and SBI can lay still enough you will be in tier 2 against SOR and TC. Otherwise, tier 3 with FA and DB like the site says now.

Until ANet figures out a way to balance all servers so all time slots are covered, this is all a joke.

Arenanet already solved this problem.

They opened up all the servers to transfers multiple times and we all moved to tier 1 and 2 where all times slots are covered to some degree and the pvp is constant.

Just because you don’t like a solution doesn’t mean it isn’t a solution.

if you do ever drop to T2 its because you’re not playing to your strengths. By having less numbers than the other two servers in tier but large enough to make an impact you could of focused on one server and slipped into second place.

BG is doing ok in T1, especially considering the quality and size of guilds that have recently aligned with the competition. BG doesn’t play perfect but when you look at all the factors there is very little criticism anyone can seriously muster.

If you had posted a month ago BG would move to T1 and fight JQ with PRX, Redguard, SF, and others along with SOS with ND and the other new additions and asked for a score prediction the answers would have been almost comical.

Still, when BG drops to T2 it will be because SOR is fighting a dead and gone server (SBI) and picking up a lot of rating. Much like when BG fought HOD and ET, only not as extreme as TC is still a solid server.

If SOR picks up enough rating next week BG will move down just in time for some tougher competition to arrive. I personally think SOR is going to get squashed a lot harder than BG is, but that won’t stop them from hanging in the tier for a lot longer than they should if that is truly how it shakes out.

Karma always wins in the end. Look at SBI and all of their “forum warriors” now. They’ll be lucky to stay in T2 for more than another week before they drop to T3.

Actually I think most of those SBI “forum warriors” are still in T1, those that aren’t joined that other server that is well known for its forum warriors that looks like it will be heading to T1 soon.

Still, you’re right about the successfulness of those smear campaigns. I saw a very similar thing happen to GOM.

In my Opinion SoR had a greater NA team than BG when they played IOJ. their PPT was consistantly higher during that time slot. BG, however, had better overall coverage.

i can agree with that.

but things have changed on each server since that day. BG has increased their NA quality a great deal.. and since the IOJ matchups they’ve even gotten a SOR guild or two. not to mention what they’ve picked up this past week.

i would very much like to see a BG/SOR matchup in these modern times.

unfortunately, it looks like this matchup is a long way off. the only possibility i see is if kaening actually pushes to T1. this will be a very hard push for them if SOR is actually T1 capable.

We know BG is competitive in T1 (maybe not winning overall score but they aren’t losing rating either), IF SOR actually is competitive in T1 as well then kaening would have to punch their way through T2 fighting a T1 capable server… not an easy feat! its hard enough to break from T2 into T1 when you outmatch your opponents by a large margin (as evidenced by the BG/SOR/TC/IOJ matches, and now the SOR/TC/SBI matches).

only then would we see a SOR/BG rematch.

or something absolutely crazy could happen out of nowhere that none of us expect :P

You still dont get how t1 works. BG is a great server with some good guilds in their respective time zones, and SoS is fighting tooth and nail. But you still dont get t1

BG is still doing good. its just that they lack people. if they show up a good fight this week pretty sure they will get transfers too.

BG has gotten a few transfers as well.

I hear a couple of small to medium NA guilds and another 400 to 500 Oceanic/SEA timezone people are moving over but having the same problems the other T1 servers are with the FULL thing going on.

i’m not certain where they all came from or the details, this is just what i was told by a guild friend.

if a map is all one color it may be appropriate to just do a breakout and grab one tower.

it may also be more appropriate to start by grabbing the NE/NW tower or going fast and silent into the garrison… all depending on your long term plans for the map.

my point being there are numerous strategies available and going for the easiest tower to get first isn’t always the best strategy… but sometimes it might be.

Consistently is a large stretch there. Every night when I logged out, we were well ahead in PPT during prime time NA hours. The only except seemed to be reset night where everything is a mad scramble and that kept bouncing back and forth.

why are you accusing me of trolling? you obviously misunderstood my point. my main points being i disagree that SOR has a greater NA team than BG and that SOR is primed to be a competitor in T1.

I think they are probably the 4th or 5th most powerful server at this time.

Trolling has nothing to do with this. The thread is about what servers belong where and those are my opinions. You’re obviously free to make a baseless claim that “SOR has a better pime time” any time you want. T1 after settle will be SOS-JQ-SOR

SoR has better prime time than BG and just got the coverage to most likely match them at Oceanic hours, which was the only reason BG got out of T2 at the time anyways. I suspect BG/SOR will be trading places in T1 alot.

Too many people think the times to cover are NA and Oceanic.

Unless SOR has picked up a lot of SEA and Euro guilds they will not match BG or be extremely competitive in T1.

Right now BG has the strongest euro coverage of all the T1 servers. That is why they are doing well.

Unless SOR finds good coverage outside of NA/Oceanic times they aren’t going anywhere for long. T1 is very demanding and you can’t ride your NA/Oceanic crew to victory like you might be able to do in T2.

(also, SOR is the only server that still thinks they have better NA prime time than BG. This was true once but BG has grown a lot since their early T2 matchups. Towards the end of their matches BG was consistently pulling higher PPT in NA than SOR and today there is no telling who has the stronger NA team)

the best way to avoid being outnumbered is to stack on the top 3 servers with everyone else.

population imbalance is much less pronounced where the populations are large throughout the day and night.

If you are a part of a large guild looking to move. please consider keeping the game competitive. stacking on the top rated server may sound like fun but in the end things will be better for everyone if the matches are competitive.

with this in mind. if your guild is actually looking for a challenging pvp experience and a good time consider BG over the other T1 servers.

BG is really quite strong in this tier. It would not take much to ensure this tier remains competitive.

This server has extremely even round-the clock coverage.

A great place to be if you don’t like worrying about others holding up their end of the 24 hour day.

still.. BG does well because of good guilds and good coverage. but we have lots of space pretty much any time for many many new people.

Culling is in their priority list; it just isn’t at the top of the list. I really don’t understand the real problem. Why don’t they just give us stick figures if rendering is an issue. At least that way we know what’s in front of us. I could care less how things look if I’m dead all the time.

my suggestion was just to show the name tags.

seeing the red names alone would at least give me some kind of indicator as to how many people are in an area.

either way.. a small improvement like what you or I suggested would be a huge improvement. perhaps we’ll see at least that much soon.

culling is an issue they are working hard to fix is it not?

as far as group stealth it is hard to make a clear judgment call on whether it is causing balance problems until the culling issue is fixed.

one thing we should never do is get up in arms too quickly about something being “overpowered” when large organized groups are taking advantage of it. those sorts of groups of people are always going to be doing things that break other groups less coordinated than them and we often lose sight of the fact that it is their skill and coordination that is winning and not necessarily any individual overpowered tactic.

as far as zergs “popping up” against other zergs that is just too hard to comment on with the culling issue being what it is. I suggest you see how things look after some sort of culling fix is implemented.

In the meantime you could try running with smaller teams doing smaller group objectives if it is causing you stress.

I don’t mind 1 person being able to gank yaks.

That could still happen with this idea implemented, but it would be a little less quick and easy for the 1 person.

As it is now though even if i have 2 or 3 people guarding a yak along with guards, a well played thief can still often kill the yak.

Sounds like a good idea to me. it would increase the effectiveness of -player- (this player word is very important) guards such that 1 thief would not be so detrimental to the guarded caravan.

I know, I was just joking as people thinking 1k damage is good/acceptable it’s not really :/ I understand AOES need to do less damage, but I feel it should be made into a chain with some benefit if they are going to keep the damage so low.

the problem is exacerbated by the fact that many of us using the staff are running heavy support builds. my staff #1 damage is closer to 500 than 1000.

I cannot understand why they do not want us doing damage with the staff. I especially cannot understand why they do not want me getting kill credit, which i seem to have trouble getting with my staff. You would think an AOE based auto-attack would be good at that but no, it isn’t. Maybe in berserker gear.. as if i’m going to run a glass cannon staff guardian!

defense is a part of the equation as well.

for any high dps class to perform well they need good burst mobility and/or in-combat escape mechanisms. there has to be a way to skillfully remove one’s self from bad situations or the player will simply end up dead after bursting someone, or every time a thief decides they want a free kill.

rangers are a little short in this department and as such will have trouble forever more in this area.

a big part of playing a burst class is in what you do after you burst someone.

I don’t think they understand what server tranfers and being at the losing end of a matchup for a month is doing to some servers. They do not understand or they do not care.

The problem with such a “by the numbers” system is it ignores the human factor, and with games of this type player morale should be a consideration.

I’m fairly certain you didn’t understand Mike’s post at all.

In his post he states that overall they think the Glicko ranking system is “good enough” but they recognize that it has some serious shortfalls in adapting to sudden changes in server strength. Essentially, Anet views it not as “the best” option but as “the least bad” option.

If server transfers are the problem (and they acknowledged in another thread that server transfers are a problem) fix the server transfers. Changing the ranking system is about the most ridiculous possible solution for fixing server transfers. As was noted, the WvW seems to want to eliminate free transfers, but it seems until the guesting system is properly implemented, that’s not an option.

I’m fairly certain i understand it completely.

The point I was making was more in line with the original posters issue in regards to matchups lasting for too long and not so much about the server transfers.

You and many others seem to be addressing this thing from the perspective of server transfers ruining matchups. I was addressing a similar situation where stale matchups cause server transfers.

The issues are similar enough though I can see where you confused them and missed the point of my original rant.

As far as them considering it the “least bad” option. That was fully my point. It is not necessarily the “least bad” option and simply because it has some utility does not make it the best imperfect option. I and others are disappointed to see a post which all but states they are happy with their poor system.

separate WvW servers is a good idea.

they don’t need to separate server by timezone though. there are more than enough players to have 24/7 coverage in WvW on a few servers.

The problem is there are just too many WvW servers (because they are linked to PVE servers for no good reason). This is the reason so many have moved to the top tiers. The pvp there is more active and balanced across the entire day.

Berserker ranger

If you want to maximize dps then yes you need to go berserker.

Rangers are unique though in that they get less benefit from berserker gear than the other classes.

simply because a small to large portion of a ranger’s damage comes from their pet. Your pet will do the same damage whether you are in berserker gear or cleric gear as far as I have been able to tell and rangers are obviously balanced around having that pet’s supplemental damage.

(please correct me if I am wrong in believing a ranger pet’s damage is static and not gear dependant)

HIRE is an amazing guild that pound for pound holds its own as well as any guild i’ve seen in any tier of WvW. I’ve seen many many competent players on Ehmry Bay from many guilds.

Yak’s Bend is fortunate to have such great opponents. And it is only through hard work and a bit of luck that we have the lead in this.

Oh, I more meant Ehmry. Last night/morning was the first time I’d heard of them outdoing Yak’s at night, but maybe I am just very unaware.

See, I thought Ehmry gained because Yak’s didn’t show up last night. I logged in looking for people to pvp with and there was just mosquitos and drakes hanging out in EB.

They coulda all been in the borderlands. I didn’t bother logging into our server voice coms so eh..

I guess there’s no way to really know. Its so hard to judge how many are on each side anyways because of that phenomenon where everyone seems to feel their own side has much less people than the enemy.. it makes it hard to trust my judgment.

they are generally horrible at wiping conditions and/or healing themselves so what damage you do get tends to stick.

Seems like Blackgate has enough players. More would only imbalance T2 further. Send some oceanics to TC/SoR and even things up :P

BG isn’t going to be a T2 server for long. You guys should worry about SBI instead.

BG will be in T1 soon if nothing changes and for that they need every person they can get. Not that they couldn’t do well as-is.

I think this server has a bright future in T1. I hope so at least, they are good people.

Plus when you F1 at a thief, and he goes in stealth the pet resets and wont continue to fight him :/
Why cant they make pets like mesmers Phantasms that will attack the thief as soon as he comes back out, quite annoying having to recast F1 everytime (considering im aiming to kill other people, I just sick my pet at them to scare them off).

THIS is my main complain about pets right now. Especially while fighting p/d thieves. My pet loses aggro every time he goes into stealth and even if I dodge to evade his sneak attacks, my pet just stands there shouting “C&D me pl0x”, so my best alternative is to let my pet die and lose the chance to swap it every 20 secs to gain quickness.

I hate it.

Yep, it is for this reason that simply increasing the pets movement speed or hitbox won’t really solve the issue of the useless pet.

I have been in many fights with thieves where my pet did not hit the thief once. Where the pet didn’t seem to even try to hit the thief either.

These two Yaks comments do not coincide whatsoever. ‘Cause all I’m reading is a lot of whining about being night capped, and than being proud of having a strong presence in the same time frame… Making your server the normal night cappers.

Sure is double standard around here.

Well whining about nightcapping serves almost no purpose. but still.. there are many different kinds of nightcapping. Its really a non-binary system that often yields binary results.

Because the world is large and full of all kinds of different time zones theres a lot of nights open to capping and you can have matchups where 3 servers all lose everything at completely different times.

Blackgate night caps in a completely different way than Isle of Janthir. At the same time IOJ night caps about the same timeframe Yak’s Bend does but a lot harder. Yak’s Bend might cap 100% of a map during the night on a server like Gates of Madness but if Yak’s is matched with say, IOJ, they will then get capped on 100% by them.

In the end everyone at least below T1 has reasons to whine. And we do.

Its funny to see Yak’s complain about DB off hours coverage when they themselves can only win in this tier due to this.

Populations get strange on major holidays. Please forget everything you saw last week and instead look at the entire rest of the year and this week and you’ll see your claim really has no merit.

Yak’s Bend has performed well in US prime time all week. Yak’s held a good PPT lead friday night all through US prime and has been at least on par with the other servers the majority of prime time US hours ever since.

No point having Crit chance without crit damage. Best to mix in some zerker gear, or/and runes. Vitality is better than toughness, for us.

actually with no crit damage whatsoever a crit does 50% more damage than a standard hit before any other on crit bonuses or periphery effects are accounted for.

as such, unless one has a very high crit chance(over 100% with bonuses and whatnot).. 1% of crit chance is more beneficial than 1% of crit damage as far as average damage is concerned (when you DO account for on crit and other effects). One does not “need” crit damage to go along with crit chance or vice versa.

disclaimer: i did say 1% crit chance vs. 1% crit damage. i’m not making a statement about the precision stats on knight’s gear.

escaping from bad situations is the one thing that rangers need.

i fear much of the community and perhaps even the developers think swiftness is mobility.

it is not.

Swiftness is definately a form of mobility. It’s just not a very good one. I’ll take a teleport or stealth over swiftness any day of the week.

i wasn’t trying to argue the technical definition of mobility.

rather, there was a more nuanced undertone to my statement that was meant to carry the point that all classes move relative to one another and most of the classes a ranger fights will have equal to near equal move speed relative to the ranger before any form of burst movement is used.

swiftness only allows a ranger to move faster relative to another class assuming they do not also have swiftness, which can be rare. then there are the 25% move speed bonuses many classes have further mitigating the usefulness of swiftness as far as mobility is concerned.

In a best case scenario where a ranger has swiftness and their opponent does not the difference is often not so great that a fight will not occur if the ranger does not wish it.

Then burst movement comes into play with charges, teleports, and other such abilities. In the end, because of the relativity of movement, these abilities have a MUCH larger impact on whether or not one class will be in range of another. It is these types of movement abilities along with stealth abilities that truly decide if a class will catch another class or if a class will escape those in pursuit of it.

This is what i was attempting to convey with that much more concise post. Swiftness being both ubiquitous and having little impact on the distance between two characters in a combat situation, should not be considered a major part of the equation as far as a character’s mobility rating is concerned.

Another Ranger Fix Idea

I like your idea, but it doesn’t really touch on the root of the ranger issue.

I feel the rangers problems are

1) at least half of their damage doesn’t really stick to their opponents. arrows are better now but the pet simply doesn’t hit still (and in many cases won’t no matter how fast it moves).

2) opponents have far too easy a time sticking to the ranger.

because of this it is too easy to end up in situations where the ranger performs sub-optimal (while allowing her oponnents to perform optimally) for reasons beyond his/her control all the while allowing opponents to dictate the situation.

i feel until these problems are addressed rangers will stay a hard mode and disadvantaged class.

it goes beyond the adjustment of numbers. still though, in an ideal world i would be happy to see the pet more in line with how i create my build.
