That said, what’s the point of creating yet another one? It’s getting old by now and they’ve already announced they’ll come to an end at some point, I think the umptiest+1 thread doesn’t make that go any faster.

Can we get a sticky that explains these statistics and how they’re calculated? About the only thing I understand about these posts is the relative placement of the servers.

Not stickied anymore but here was explained how they use the Glicko2 rating system.

Seems to me Demogat you are forgetting something, Anet made each server region free.
EU guilds on USA servers
USA guilds on EU servers
Aussies free to go ?
Asians free to go ?
And where do the russians need to go ? they not alowed to play GW2 ?

Maybe stick to Structured pvp Demogat ? its alot more fair as it seems you cannot handle that servers are recruiting guilds to cover their off peak hours.

How about Int. Server?
Honest the EU flag has no sense for me.
And yes, it is arenanet fault.

EU flag has a sense in where the datacenter is located, as in a better route to the server as in better latency / ping. Doesn’t have that big of an impact in WvW but it does in sPvP with the type of combat the game has.

I agree that those 7/8am beta-end events on Monday mornings were horrible for Europeans though.

The stress tests on the other hand were all during EU prime time so the majority of the NA playerbase couldn’t participate in them, and the starting time of all BWE’s was during the prime time of EU players on friday evening. So both had their (dis)advantages, if balancing them then EU had the most advantages compared to US.
Not complaining here, because I’m in EU and just don’t understand why several fellow euros are complaining about getting disadvantaged as Anet is the first company that doesn’t make me feel like a second rate customer like in many other games where everything is US time based, GM run events are during US prime time and there’s only giveaways for wich US players are eligible etc. (not talking about WoW because I already strongly disliked it in vanilla times and it was the live game I quit the fastest in my gaming history).

To clarify my original post, I didn’t mean a US/EU split that would prevent guesting on US servers. Only the forum / event times / patch times should be split and localised to prevent inconvenience and confusion for most people.

People guesting on US servers and doing the events at their start times with American friends has no effect on anyone else, so I certainly don’t see any reason to prevent it

Even though that looks great on paper, they probably have a reason to pick that time, they might need to work on something related to it until that time or whatever. So assuming for a second that they’re technically unable to launch it earlier, and you want the event in EU to start during EU prime time only, this would mean that for EU it couldn’t launch until tomorrow evening. Imagine the outcry if it starts say 20 hours later than in NA I’ve seen that with every patch/xpack launch in games that did that (eg when codies was hosting lotro in EU).

These points keep getting brought up because there’s a large amount of players that disagree with you so your conclusions only count for yourself and aren’t facts either.

holska.4127

Yep I actually like it. Of course it could use some work but it isn’t nearly as dramatic as folks make it sound. It adds another layer of having to make choices in combat and I’ve seen plenty of situations where smaller groups are still able to beat a much bigger group so I’m not convinced about the argument that it favors the zerg.
If you don’t want enemies to be rezzed you gotta focus on the rezzers, just like in other games it’s in many situations wise to focus on the healers because else you can’t kill anyone either.
If we remove the downed / rezzing mechanic we might as well implement tanks and healers so we can stack tanks at the entrance of a keep that are focus healed so the enemy is unable to enter after the siege equipment has done it’s job like in some other games. Else you’ll only have burst spec zergs running around destroying everything in their way within seconds.
I prefer long lasting epic large scale battles.

I agree it would be very nice to have some party stuffs to celebrate the winners added to contribute to the already somewhat nice atmosphere when a lot of players suddenly appear in LA. A clear notification that the rebalancing has finished would be nice as well, I often find myself spamming F while standing in portal (is less tiresome than clicking on the scorepanel)

But yeah I’m definetely ready and very excited we’ll have a closer match this week instead of VS having double our points every time (although they seem to have transferred to Arborstone last week to get 2 french servers in the top 3).

Q: Superior Siege

It’s not necesarily a big money investment, I did at least one of the WvW jumping puzzles daily for some time which gives a lot of blueprints (and badges) and used some badges to buy bp’s as well. So I have a decent amount of superior siege equipment.
I also have plenty normal ones so I pick the situation to use when I feel the fight is important enough to use superior so it doesn’t feel a waste, or where imo they could turn the tide of battle in our favor.

50% rangers? I haven’t seen them in overwhelming amounts. Also playing as an elementalist often going my own way or in small groups I don’t have much problems with them. And I’m considered to be an easy kill if caught alone or often focused on first if in small group.
From my class’s point of view thieves and mesmers are much more of a problem, as in dieing within a few eye blinks if I’m not paying attention or having my escape skills on cd.

Well, nothing is preventing you doing that already It’s all about your ability to RP

For those that aren’t able to RP very well without having the theme / setting and such available it could be a nice adition.
I like the ceremonies they implemented in Rift even though I don’t care for it myself I can see how it could make some players happy if they met eachother in game and aren’t dedicated RP’ers.
Currently I would consider it a waste of resources though if it would take away from the resources to develop other content like player/guild housing, new events, new spvp modes and I could go on for a few pages with features / content I consider more important or a more nice adition for a larger group of players than marriage.

In an ideal world, guilds fed up of long queue times would move to servers in the middle/lower half of the table. Of course, this is not an ideal world. No one wants to move to a low league server.

Besides that indeed the ideal world doesn’t exist, I think that there’s much less guilds fedup with long queue times than with the prospect of having lost everything they claim, upgrade and apply influence buffs to every single morning.
The queue times have also improved a lot since about 1,5 week. I’m now mostly 1,5 hours at max. in queue where prior to that it often took 4+ hours. I’ve gotten into the habit to queue up the minute I get home from work to have a chance to be in before I have to call it a night, but recently the queue often already pops when I’m not even done with my chores yet :P

Of course you are able to play better when you have 30 guildmembers rushing through the primetime. Elonafels for example is organizing in another way. We try to integrate EVERY player @ EVERY time who is on the borderlands and give our ts servers free for use. Anybody can organize themselves on our 4 teamspeak servers for every borderland, so we give all players a plattform to play 24/7 with other people. With this kind of organization you are able to pull all players together which are online at a time and I think you´ll have enough players even at nightshifts then.

Randoms and a lot of the less dedicated players don’t use voicechat or even visit (guild / game / server) forums so it would integrate SOME players which likely are the ones that are already putting effort in by inquiring where their help is needed if they’re not in one of the wvw dedicated guilds.
Also this still doesn’t solve the population during certain hours of day, this also very much noticable in PVE. To use a recent example early this morning before work I logged in just to check the wvw score and was still at the Claw of Jormag location who happened to be up. We were 3 fighting them and trying to get more players to join us, by the end of the fight exactly 1 hour later we were a wopping 10’ish players Normally that zone is packed with players asking every few minutes when the dragon will be up and if somebody reports he’s up it’s soon packed.
There’s plenty of folks that would be dedicated enough to organise and be online during night / early morning if it was within their powers. But there’s simply not enough that can to be able to close the point gap.

Spawn camping can be easily avoided by taking another exit.
But where to draw the line?
I’m never camping but for example last night we were able to finally claim the VS keep and actually there was no single point held by VS on eternal battlegrounds, it was completely owned about 50/50 by us (FS) and ER (without teaming up as servers, we fought both germans and french at keep).
After being dominated by VS since launch thanks to nightcapping, I must admit it felt great to fight them back on their stairs from the spawn point for some time It actually was one of my highlights in WvW since launch.

Russians rules at server Far Shiverpeaks?

The people on Far Shiverpeaks are not the same that were there from the start.

It is now filled with players to bad to do anything on the other servers, players that dont know how to work together, dont want to work together and are only there “for the ride”

I dont think, at its current level, that Far Shiverpeaks is even 5-6 in EU

It has been an unorganised mess from the start and I also see still a lot if not mostly the same players around (at least those I remember the name of).
I think the difference you notice is that the other servers are improving (esp. the new matchup with ER (DE) impressed me so far) but we are not because none of the bigger guilds are stepping up to get any structure in.
And if somebody does then all that happens is they either get discussion against them with everything they say or if they make a misstake (everybody does at times, we all gotta learn and improve from it…) get flamed childishly by some that seem to hate their teammates as much as their enemy.

On the topic, yes those russian guilds of course have an impact on the server but they don’t rule it because if their commanders are on the map they don’t say a word in mapchat nor even in /say when their zerg picks up random players (like myself because I’m not in a big guild). So they don’t contribute to the tactics (if there are any on this server) because they never ever share what they’re doing.

You got what he said wrong.

In every single other MMO that has dungeons its not a chance, a rare is a guaranteed drop. The chance is whether you win the roll over another party member, which is very high. GW2 is the only MMO with dungeons I have ever played that does not guarantee rare loot from bosses.

You spend say 3 hrs running dungeons your pretty much just walking away with tokens and some money. In other MMOs you spend 3 hrs running dungeons you walk away with Tokens, Money AND (unless your really unlucky) some cool loot.

I was being sarcastic but still with a serious undertone.
And every single other mmo? How about LOTRO? There’s rare jewelry drops in every single dungeon, raid and skirmish raid at max. level that have a low droprate and on top of that have to be rolled for. Don’t remember other examples from top of my head but I remember more mmo’s that had rare drops with a dropchance, a loot table that was randomly pulled from, and I’ve played every single major mmo released since 1999.
I also remember for the items that did drop guaranteed like armour pcs. or barter coins that I didn’t manage to win the roll before the next patch that made the item obsolete was going live on some occasions.

You maybe mis-understanding what I say. Every single MMO with good PvE provides loot to the group when you kill a boss in a dungeon, guaranteed loot! In most MMOs it is a Rare item and in some cases and Epic item.

For example RIFT and WoW, you run a dungeon and you will kill maybe 3-5 bosses and at the end of the run 3-5 pieces of epic or rare loot have dropped from the boss meaning the majority of the players in that party just walked away with a rare peace of gear they could use. On top of this you get the tokens to encourage those that do not need the gear to run the dungeon anyway.

Its a very very simple system that has proven to be a success. Why A.Net did not do this is again beyond me and mind boggling. They have turned dungeons in this game into the worst possible grind.

You’re talking about rare as item quality. I’m talking about the actual meaning of the word rare. The rare items you mention aren’t rare

You can’t work with a system that relies on chance for getting a precursor. Telling people this is a guide to work within the system is ridiculous because it’s equivalent to telling people to work within the system of a casino slot machine that almost never pays out.

The OP’s post is complete ignorance and assumes people aren’t willing to work for the legendary materials. Nobody is complaining about gathering legendary mats. It’s until you reach the slot machine point where it just eats up your effort and gives nothing back that is the problem.

I wonder why so many people complain about the RNG, some of which are outspokenly positive about other themepark mmo’s that have rare drops that are considered essential (jewelry and such) that a) have a very very low droprater b) have to be rolled for against others. a and b combined nets into maybe even a lower overal droprate than the precursor.

Yeah there is enough variety for 2 or 3 classes. It’s just extremely bland when compared to other games in the genre. I really dislike how you can’t build a character in GW2, you work with very limited presets. There is more depth to 1 class in GW1 than all of GW2 combined. There is a shockingly small number of skills and so many of them are boring.

I agree about GW1 but most other games in the genre there’s usually 1 spec to rule them all aka cookie cutter build per class, maybe 2 or 3 if the class can viably take on multiple roles. Or when looking at the number of skills, they might have 30+ skills available per class but more often than not like half of those skills are used 1x per week situationally and the majority sticks to the same boring rotation that some respected players have parced to be most viable. If the game offer macro’s and/or add-ons this is usually even reduced to 1 button “rotations” for most fights and in some fights maybe 5 other skills situationally used to counter something. This all while standing still for the majority of fights or just occasionally repositioning to avoid AoE’s / other boss skills that are too strong to be healed through.
I prefer the GW2 system but to each their own.

I like some luck being involved, feels more rewarding or like a relief that way when you finally get the drop.
My experience with other games (for example lotro after they changed to token barter systems for everything) is that if you know beforehand exactly what you need to do and can estimate how long it will take that it becomes more boring and often even feels more grindy.
Acquiring a legendary in GW2 doesn’t feel grind to me because it requires luck and a huge amount of mats so I don’t bother even trying to grind for it and just enjoy the game. At some point I’ll have all the items required, I don’t mind if that’s in 2 months or in 2 years.

in WvW

No I don’t see myself in those examples. I’m very well able to ignore the total score and who’s going to win the overall match, because winning doesn’t give you more than bragging rights if even that; but also because I’m still fighting and winning epic (and often hours long) battles when far behind in total points.
This is not just a theory, I’m on FS and am used to VS always having at least twice the amount of our total points so have tested it for some time now and still queue for WvW daily
It would of course have been different if I had been on a low pop server and there were no queues because of that but any other outnumbered situation I don’t have a problem with because it can be countered by sending resources where they’re needed. This can be communicated across the maps and even to PvE by guilds, public voice servers, tells to friends etc. Folks just gotta take initiative and organise things, not be passive about it. You can’t win a war with the passive mindset you describe.

It’s sick imo if folks grind for it and just do that but hey to each their own.
For me it’s a long term achievement and just that, I won’t be actively pursuing it, just hoard the mats that I’ll collect while playing the game anyways.
Maybe I’ll have it in 3 months from now or maybe in a a year or so I don’t care.
I also disagree that there’s no end game content, it has enough to do for me at max. level and actually more than every other mmo I played since 1999, but there’s already too many discussions about that.

It’s a gold sink, pure and simple. If you like the look of the gear then slowly save up money for each piece and transmute it to the stats you want and need. SLOWLY.

The thing being is that eventually gold in this game will mean literally nothing to you.
Once you have your stat gear the only thing that will matter is…. looks. Except for Travel, repairs, and WvWvW the only thing you will have to pay for is….. LOOKS.

If you like the look of the T3 gear (which for me is heavy and I hate the look of it so I won’t buy it ever) then slowly work for it. It’s an achievement (which again I have no clue what the points will be used for if anything so again it’s just meaningless numbers right now) so once you get it you will get an achievement for owning it.

It’s something that could take you a year to earn if you are casual or for some it could take weeks or months.

It’s neither here nor there to get upset about it as the stats are pointless on it. If you want it then slowly work toward it. It’s a carrot on a long long stick.

+1 minus the carrot on a long long stick. That would be if there was some random variable like a dice roll chance for something you need to drop. This is a straight forward goal that is static and the road to achieve it is VERY clear

The carrot on a stick analogy is not used to describe a chance but rather that when you finally get to the carrot the stick is pulled away from you just when you’re about to bite. In mmo context this is used to describe tiered gear being made obsolete when the next raid cluster goes live because you’ll need to get that next gear set to be able to do that new raid more easily and is a hard requirement for the next raid.
This doesn’t apply to cultural armour in any way, granted it’s tiered, but it’s not needed to do anything nor will it become obsolete when they ever decide to add t4, 5 etc.
It’s all down to personal cosmetic taste so a new tier doesn’ t mean you’ll also like the looks of it and want to collect it.
But I agree with you that I don’t see how the carrot on a stick analogy applies here at all

Eh, I completely forgot about this feature.

Quick tip to Arenanet, add this along with other minigames to an easily visible NPC in Lions Arch so people don’t have to go to far off places just to do one minigame.

I disagree. ALL cities are beautiful and the game is a lot about exploration. Making all services / content accesible from only 1 of the towns, or for example creating a dungeon finder or dungeon npc in 1 town would make the others ghost towns and the game would just end up like a lot of other themeparks where everybody is camping next to the trading post waiting for some queue to pop.
There need to be incentives to visit more places, like for example these mini games, and not reduce the game to become a lobby game. And besides that it’s clearly designed to be a norn cultural thing.
To make them easier to find there are other ways to direct you to Hoelbrak, this could still be some NPC in LA telling you about it but I would appreciate if you still need to head to Hoelbrak yourself and join the game from the setting where it best fits.

Better would be to have the point reduction based on the population imbalance than time of day.

Point 1 wouldn’t work, say FS has 20 players on a map during the night, that would mean that at most 30 players on VS would be able to login. I know that still sounds good from a FS point of view (I’m also on FS) but each coin has 2 sides and you would prevent other players for which that is the preferred playing time from enjoying the game.

Point 2 they published graphs for and when they make changes to the system I expect they’ll publish the figures again to show what has changed.

Point 3 wouldn’t be a big enough incentive to permanently move to a low pop server (at some point free transfers will be dsiabled and I secretly hope they do it without prior notice so that the server hoppers abusing the system are stuck on what’s basically their enemy’s world).

You can’t just base it on some well known devs posting in forums, without their team they can’t accomplish anything and there’s always very experienced top quality devs in any game development team that are not posting publicly and only mentioned by name in the credits.

Totally fair play, stealth is not just for ganking or escaping but has more applications.

Warlord

I realize this is your top priority, but your actions tell a different story. While your busy nerfing professions, messing with the drop rate and messing with dungeons and farmers, which hurt players your not releasing patches to fix these major problems and hurting player more, so you are killing your game.

It’s such a falacy to think that while they’re working on one thing they can’t work on something else at the same time. There’s in software / game development usually multiple specialized teams of which the resources more often than not aren’t fully interchangable so even if for example a large part of the class dev team’s resources were temporarily assigned to solve WvW bugs or develop anti hack tools, they wouldn’t be able to contribute that much because it’s not their specialization and they haven’t been directly involved (much) with the development of that part of the game.

Crafting Exotics: What!?

Just a few days of farming or just hoarding any mats you find while enjoying the game is already too much for being able to make max. stat items (that you only need to do 1x ever) these days? sigh
In almost every other mmo out there the major complaints about crafting are that it’s too easy to do and is just a timesink, not enough rare recipes available and crafted stuff is useless and/or doesn’t have any value when selling.
Here we have “rare” recipes that offer the same stat level as other high end rewards like dungeon gear and folks are still whining because they want to just click 1 button to have max. gear (there actually is, Go to Heart of the Mist, problem solved).

Thanks a lot for this. Nice to see the math behind it.
In general I really like how you guys at Anet state a lot of things your working on with great amount of detail what exactly you’re doing and why, which almost no other mmo company ever provides to their playerbase.

Agreed those things would definitely be nice to have. The thread title could’ve been better though, I dislike stating you/we/they “need” something when it’s a nice to have feature and not a requirement.

The Grove, Rata Sum and Divinity's Reach useless

I’m not part of your version of everybody since I spend more time in The Grove than in LA. Also you ask why you would waste spending time getting to Rata Sum as an Asura if you can already go to LA and have everything there. I can revert that question, why you go to LA if you’ve got everything in Rata Sum already? And both are just a click on the waypoint away.
I hardly ever use an asura gate to get to LA unless I go via Heart of the Mist which is actually more time consuming because I first have to go to the hero panel, activate the pvp tab and click to go to Heart of the Mists and then run to the gate to end up in LA.
Might as well just open the map and click the waypoint, I’m no cheap skate and don’t mind travel cost.
Looking for dungeon groups in my experience is much more effective in the map where the dungeon is located than in LA so that’s not a reason for me. After having explored LA on several characters all I do there is access the town services that I can also access in other towns.

Is Legendary crafting GW2 endgame?

end game is mini-pet collection.

Still more fun than running the same 3 dungeons or 1 raid 300+ times on auto pilot mode just to equip guildies and have a raid team + subs ready before the next one is released.

I won’t do it because it is not fun. In fact, I am almost done playing it is there for those who want it to show off. You can name it however you please, grinding for hoarding gold/karma is not fun. Don’t pretend it is. Some people think it’s worth the annoyance, I’m fine with not having it.

Also, this is a themepark game either way.

I never said it wasn’t a themepark, I even said “other themepark mmo’s” which implies this one is a themepark as well.
The thing is that I don’t grind or hoard for it since the things needed I’ll acquire anyways over time by just doing what I enjoy and not focusing on acquiring it, hence why I mentioned long-term goal. And since I won’t use the required mats for anything else they’ll naturally stack up over time so even if it takes me 2 years that way it’s still a long-term goal.

endgame haha, All the “End Game” chasers will be gone in a month or so. =P

A month? Didn’t they all just head back to pandaville?

Its because of the massive amount of karma/gold needed to obtain them, and the fact that there is an invisible wall in the way to prevent getting the needed karma/gold in the form of the diminishing returns code.

So then it’s because folks aren’t used to longterm goals to work towards while having fun anymore? Seems to me too many folks are only focused on the shineys and want them right now like they’re being used from other themepark mmo’s where it takes at most a couple of weeks to get the rarest items these days without even trying too hard.
I guess too many humans have been crossbred with skritt.

Has Guild Wars 2 been worth your $60.00?

I spent a little more because I went for the DDE (and am in € zone) but it’s a resounding YES!
No matter from which angle I look at it (eg. comparing both the quality and level of entertainment to other games or to other forms of entertainment like going to the movies), I feel I already got the purchase price returned in entertainment value during the BWE’s only even though that doesn’t really count.
I’m still having a blast so the returned entertainment value is still increasing every day.

Engineer kits in general are not that amazing but 3 of them are completely unusable.

All kits have their situational usefulness. They’re not meant to be equipped for a longer time imo. To use your flamethrower example, your main complaint seems to be that the there’s no synergy in the skillset it offers, but it’s not a main weapon you keep equipped for long times. I see it simmilar to ele’s attunements, I don’t (always) swap to a certain attunement because I want to use ALL its skills or stay in it, I often switch attunement just for 1 specific CC skill or boon / effect it gives on attunement.
Knowing your toolkits well and finding nice combinations with other skills and using them situationally is what makes them interesting. Purely looking at its skillset as if it is a full weapon is never going to be satisfactory because they’re not made for that.

A crippled class. Why?

DaveK

So the solution to a class with problems is to play another class or not to play at all. Good solution. /facepalm

The OP isn’t about problems with the class that other players universally agree about, but rather about disliking core mechanics of the class and therefor the person you quoted made a sound advice. It’s not about problems or bugs but about disliking, so why play a class you don’t like?

Dual Pistol DPS

Condition damage is imo actually still quite good if spec’d for it (and elixirs), esp. with piercing bullets. Dual pistol is better for that than pistol / shield because it relies heavy on (burn, bleed) crits but in PVP I tend to use shield with it instead to have some utility / survivability because often I don’t have any kits slotted, just elixirs.
