Leveling was fun

Except that vistas aren’t locked and haven’t been. They simply don’t appear on the map. If you run into a Vista you can use it at any level.

So they are locked from the map. Which means if they find a vista and go “O neat! I wonder if there is more of those?” they need to wait until more are revealed by level unlocking or they get lucky again.

I think you might have misunderstood – if you already had at least one character that was up to the appropriate levels (IIRC) before the NPE went live, you’ll be able to access them from the beginning on a new character afterward (or, I’m given to understand, if you started playing the game after the NPE, unlocked vistas and skill challenges on your first character, and then created more characters). It’s supposed to be New Player Experience, after all, not New "Character* experience, and vistas and skill challenges were fixed I’ve found it to be that way on the characters I’ve created since the NPE went live. Vistas and skill challenges are still hidden (unexplored) on a given map until you enter the area they’re located in, and that is what you might be thinking of.

I hope Orpheal’s post won’t be taken seriously…

Well, I hope it will be, because the only thing missing from there is fixing the Personal Story. I agree that all those items are of higher priority than implementing a new feature that a nontrivial percentage of the player base is implacably opposed to, that we’ve had these circular arguments about for two years now without a really new point pro or con being raised. And yes, I think all these mounts threads ought to be merged (like the Cantha thread).

I have two level 80 engineers (one Charr, the other Norn) and two elementalists (one a level 23 Asura that I haven’t done much with in a long time, the other a new level 14 human that I just started yesterday). I used to have two mesmers, one Norn and the other human, but I deleted the Norn a while back – she was only in her level 20’s and I was concentrating on other characters, though I might recreate her if/when I get another character slot.

Silver/gold champs: failure of communication?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’ve been at numerous attempts to kill the “Silver” and “Gold” champions at Indigo Cave over the past week, and they’ve all failed – some totally miserably, others heartbreakingly close. As far as I can tell, the primary reason that these events keep failing is that people are either ignorant of or deliberately disobeying three key things that have to be done to succeed at this event:

1) Do not – repeat, NOT – pop the gas bubbles in the cavern until one of the champions is right next to them. Popping them at the right time stuns the champ so that it can be attacked and degraded more easily; popping them at the wrong moment just wastes them.

2) Do not chase the champion teragriffs, because they move a lot faster than you do. Wait for them – preferably near a gas bubble – and when they get close to your position, then pop the bubble and start whaling on the champ.

3) Do NOT attempt to attack the two champs when they’re together. They reinforce each other and inflict huge amounts of damage on the zerg.

TL:DR – typical zerg thinking is worse than useless against those two champs. Since I don’t believe that most people are deliberately ignoring this advice, which has been given over and over again on the map over the last week, I have to think that there’s basically a massive failure of communication/basic organization going on here. The people with commander tags – specifically the people who should have knowledge of how to beat these particular bosses – simply are, for the most part, not stepping up and taking charge, at least on the maps I’ve been on (there are exceptions, though, for instance the leader of my own guild).

Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

The new patch is nerfing the chest farm:

“Bug Fix:

  • Fixed a bug in which Lost Bandit Chests near Amber Sandfall spawned too fast and too numerously."

I guess whoever was saying earlier that they’d talked to an ANet dev on-map who said the spawn rate of chests wasn’t working the way it was supposed to was telling the truth after all.

There’s also the fact that not all people with a commander tag up are actually acting as commanders. Some guilds like to use commander tags as ID devices during events so that they know where everyone is.

Slightly off-subject, sadly I’ve seen a few instances of late of apparently AFK players standing in the Silverwastes, often dead and resuscitated only to be killed again and seemingly unaffected by the auto-logging out (one observed instance was there for in excess of four hours) that I am told exists for players who are motionless for an extended amount of time. It occurred to me (and several other players who entered into discussion about this) that they are still being rewarded with the chests, so could this be considered a form of bot and if so, should I consider reporting said individuals (hate doing this without actual reason) for suspected botting?

You actually have to do something (use the sonar and/or dig) to get the lost bandit chests, so I assume you mean the bonus chests from completed events. I don’t know that it’s actually botting – for example, do those afk characters have “real” names or gibberish “names”, which is usually a fairly reliable sign of a bot – and also, I think you have to actually do something in the event (kill at least one enemy or, for the wall building, transfer at least one block of rubble) to get at least bronze credit, though I’ve been able to get gold credit in wall-building with as little as just one rubble block sometimes.

Why can’t you just enjoy how it is right now? To be honest, there’s a reason why these kinds of things become insanely popular: because looting the chests is more profitable then doing the actual events. No one cares about the events because they give us nothing. We waste a lot of time for 3 piles of sand and a couple of bandit crests. Until they start making events more enticing, obviously more people would rather the chest farm. I’ve been playing this game since launch, and have had so much trouble making money that doesn’t involve me having to spend hours and days and weeks to rack up a decent profit. Once the chest farming started I was able to finally build up some gold at a decent rate without having to spend a ton of time. In this game, the rich get richer, and the poor stay where they are until something comes along that can boost them out of that. I’m not saying it’s a good thing that people abandon the events, but just remember. The shovels will start to run out quickly with most people just doing chest farms, and when they do run out, a lot more people will be more inclined to do the events again for a while until either the next part of the story comes out, the farm gets nerfed, or everyone finally starts to lose interest. So yeah, the way Anet is providing content needs to be rethinked, but until then, just join in and enjoy it while it lasts. Unless of course, you’ve got 500g and a full armor set already and just play the game for new content. There are a few lfg maps that state they’re event only not farm maps, maybe you should hit one of those up if you’re looking for story and not farm.

The shovels don’t run out, you get them for doing the defense events…

It’s a bit irksome that some people don’t seem to understand this fundamental fact: you need shovels to find and dig up those lovely lost bandit chests, BUT you can only get them by successfully completing the defense events. I’ve noticed a couple of times that people on certain (not all) maps seem to be so monomanically focused on digging up the chests north of Amber that they ignore the defense events at other camps that are the only way they can get the tool they need – and even at Amber, you only get one shovel per successful event. It works out, though; they’ll figure it out when they run out of shovels and realize that they can’t fail events to upscale loot like in some other incidents, they need to win the events to get the loot they want.

Does magicfind booster work on bandit chests?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: joe.7684

joe.7684

Yes it does apply to lost bandit chests.

I don’t think we actually know that. We know that normally Magic Find does not apply to chests, or drops from loot bags. But in this living story they’ve included a new buff that increases magic find for bandit chests specifically. It is however unclear if this stacks with your existing magic find. Its really all a bit inconsistent and confusing.

“Magic Find is both an account bonus and a character attribute that increases the chance to receive higher-quality loot from slain foes and from structured PvP reward track loot boxes. It does not affect any other containers (including champion loot bags), any chests, or any other source of loot.

There are two components of Magic Find: an account-wide bonus, which applies to all characters on the account, and a character-specific attribute. "

It’s my impression that it does indeed stack with your existing magic find. For instance, my base MF is 106% (126% when I’m playing a character wearing a Syzygy necklace augmented with the magical infusion). My guild regularly provides MF boosts of an extra 10%, so that brings me to 136% when I go into the Silverwastes. When I get the maximum of 5 stacks of the boost, I’ve observed my MF go to 286%.

Since I really don’t do much crafting, I also sell stacks of materials that I’ve acquired from gathering or salvaging.

I’ve been told that my mesmer looks a bit like Cinderella, so I decided to accentuate the resemblance with the gown!

Again, I’m glad that I’m not wearing my fingers to the nub to get this mini with the unpronounceable name – which, to be perfectly honest, doesn’t particularly grab my fancy anyway. If it does drop, great, if not, I’ll lose no sleep over it. I got Zuzu as a drop the other day and that’s good enough for me. What I’m really farming ToT bags for this week is to get enough cobs to buy enough 20-slot Halloween pails (somebody worked it out and told me last night that the material cost in candy corn amounts to 7g, which is a huge savings over the usual 20-some gold for 20-slot bags) to equip all nine of my characters with at least one. In fact, my mesmer already has three. That having been done, I’ve started putting aside ToT bags for later sale, because maize balm (and that mini with the unpronounceable name). Actually, I may also start selling excess nougat centers, plastic fangs and chattering skulls as well; I’ve already made at least one each Tyria’s Best Nougat Center, gibbering skull and high-quality fang set, and I’m not sure I need more than one of each of those to craft the Gift of (fill in the blank).

I have not one jot of Chinese ancestry, but I’m really starting to get fed up with the continual complaints about how ArenaNet is “pandering to China” in some way or form. Racism is an ugly word, but some of the complaints I’ve been seeing have an unpleasant tinge of “how dare those masses of grubby, money-obsessed Chinese muck about with our game!” Sure, some Chinese game companies have a well-deserved bad reputation for trying to get money out of their customers in any way possible, but I don’t like the way that this is spilling over to the general Chinese player-base, a lot of whom I daresay don’t like that sort of thing any better than Westerners do. So (speaking generally to ***everyone***) cut out the continual China-bashing here and everywhere else. It’s ugly and unbecoming.

About 15 minutes ago, I started encountering a strange error message when I was selling some items on the Trading Post. I was selling items via instant sell to buyers when, on one transaction, the message box hung. I closed it and went on to the next item I wanted to sell, only to find that when I attempted to do so, a bright red box came up with the message “ERROR: An error has occurred”. I tried switching characters, rebooting and relogging, but nothing’s worked so far. Since the box doesn’t say anything at all about what the error might be, I have no idea what to do about it. I’ve filed a bug report but I wanted to ask here to see if anyone else has ever encountered that same problem and how they solved it.

EDIT: I can still pick up sale proceeds and purchased items on the TP. It’s just selling and posting items for sale that’s broken for me.

Don't sell your ToT bags

I’m considering starting to sell ToT bags once I’ve amassed enough candy corn to make the cobs I need to get Halloween Pails (the 20-slot equipment bags) for my level 80 mesmer, engineer and warrior and my up-leveling guardian. At the current rate that should only take a few more days. I’ve already gotten the Maize Balm recipe and Zuzu from the bags, and have gathered enough candy to buy the other three available minis, and I’m not real interested in the “super-rare” mini. So, at this point I’m really just building up what I need to get, say, 15 pails or so which should outfit these three characters, and any other unusual or rare drops that come in while I’m doing that are pure gravy.

Well, after reading this thread I know one thing; I’m not going to waste a lot of effort on trying to get this mini. TBH, I’m not particularly a cat person anyhow. :P I’m going to direct my efforts toward more attainable things – the 20-slot Halloween pail, for example, which is 3 cobs each, and which I really need since 20-slot bags generally go for 15-20 gold on the TP, or Zuzu, which is 12 cobs (if it doesn’t turn up as a drop in one of the bags). I already got the Candy Corn, Ghost Carlotta, and Bloody Prince minis with the proceeds I’ve amassed so far from Labyrinth runs, as well as the recipe for Maize Balm.

EDIT/UPDATE: For the record, I got Zuzu as one of last night’s drops from the ToT bags. So now, I have all the minis I can reasonably hope to get from this year’s festival and I can save my cobs for the Halloween pails

Agreed with the above. If you’re with a good zerg, you shouldn’t be completely defeated more than once or twice (if even that) during an average run, even against one of the bosses (Labyrinthine Horror, Viscount of Candy Corn, Skeletal Lich). This morning, I was in the Labyrinth for nearly three hours and only got completely taken down once, so it’s more reasonable to wait until you’re done and can get back to LA. What I’d really rather have is a merch set up at one of the WP’s so that we could take breaks by teleporting there, unloading loot, then going back in again – it’d be better than trying to get the whole zerg to stop for the purpose (some commanders don’t like to stop at all).

If we could agree on a definition of what a raid is in GW2, that would be great to begin with.

You had a good point just now when you suggested that a significant part of the problem is terminology. We had two “elite missions” in GW1/Factions – Urgoz’s Warren and the Deep, the Domain of Anguish in GW1/Nightfall, and the Underworld and Fissure of Woe in GW1/Prophecies – and nobody ever complained about those. Oh yeah, and Slaver’s Exile in Eye of the North – I still shudder when I think about that one; for most people the only way to complete it was to hire runners to defeat the end boss Duncan the Black, who was insanely tough. What were those but GW1 versions of what, in other games, are called raids? And I spent a lot of time on those missions, not least so I could get a particularly nice set of Fissure of Woe armor.

If these “raids” – but let’s call them “elite missions” or “elite areas” instead – are structured like the above were in GW1, I don’t necessarily see a problem in principle. The key is that they need to be inclusive rather than exclusionary.

And a sidenote – I love how, it’s three pages in and already there are people mentioning “leeching” and so forth.

If you want to know my biggest objection to raids? This is why. That attitude? Don’t want it stinking up the game any more than it already does. Hard content which is punishingly difficult so “the filthy casual leechers” don’t take part? Fine with it, I just won’t do it.

But the thought of someone desiring a part of the game specifically to exclude other players? No. Thank. You.

This is precisely why I’m wary of proposals for raids and all such similar content. There’s enough division and animosity already between so-called “hardcores” and “casuals” already without adding more.

Before we judge TTS – or whatever guild is being accused of this here – guilty, I really think that we need to have somebody who can speak for them to come onto this thread and answer these charges. I’ve only ever seen TTS organizing an event at Triple Trouble, and virtually all my Tequatl runs have been organized either as PUG’s or by other guilds.

My real issue with TS (Team Speak) is practical: I’m severely hearing impaired, so I can’t use any program or app that’s voice-only. That said, the one time I was on a map that TTS was organizing Triple Trouble on, they weren’t requiring people to join TS. What they did say was that it would be very helpful during the event, but not mandatory.

My personal headcanon is that my primary character, a mesmer, emigrated from Elona to Kryta after Nightfall was averted, which is how she took part in the events recounted in Eye of the North and War in Kryta. She, having been ennobled by Queen Salma for her manifold services to Kryta and in defense of humanity, and her family settled down in Lion’s Arch after the restoration of Salma to the throne, and her descendants later moved to Divinity’s Reach when it became the new capital, helping other Elonians escape Palawa Joko’s tyranny and becoming prominent in the Elonian expatriate community there; the family intermarried with several Krytan noble families, which is why my first character, a direct descendant of that mesmer and herself a mesmer, made her home in Salma District and counted Lord Faren among her close friends.

The problem is that there was a very vocal coterie of people (though I don’t know how representative they really are of the larger player base) agitating for raids, and it got so that ANet eventually hired a designer who specializes in raid design, so I guess raids in some form are coming eventually.

Ya know, I was thinking about this a bit and keep coming back to the same spot. Uh… I give you $60 for a couple of gig of binaries and game server access. “But but I have an emotional investment in this!” Well, that’s on me. Yeah, they could do better than have two random devs kinda smirk and say SAB is on the shelf via some weird web interview. As an aside, that was a really really bad way to let that news out and I don’t even like SAB. But, life is hard, wear a helmet.

[…]

So, it’s settled: What we’ve got is what we have. Smile and be as happy as you can.

Simple point, ANet wouldn’t have to hide in shadows if people could be civil. There’s even posts in the sticky about how to be heard by the dev team. They amount to:

Don’t be a [bad word normally filtered by “kitten”].

And I kinda like “Smile and be as happy as you can.” That’s a good way to be.

The both of you have good points. Notwithstanding the validity of other’s points and complaints, all too often – though not always – they’re delivered in a hectoring, whining tone that really grates on one’s nerves. I sometimes wonder if one reason for ANet’s representatives being so often silent on these threads is because they’re working hard to resist the temptation to snap or snarl back. I also wonder if ANet may not have made a mistake in the first place in promising transparency when their own policies turned out to make such transparency impossible – in other words, to write a check that they were then unable to cash. This isn’t to defend their manifold failures in communicating with the gamer community, but to suggest that they would have done better to say up front, two years ago, that they were going to be seriously limited in how much they were going to be able to reveal about upcoming game development and thenceforth to avoid statements that raised people’s hopes unneccessarily. If they had done that, I submit that a lot of the angst we’re now seeing here wouldn’t exist.

The sheer amount of time, trouble, grind, materials, RNG, etc., etc., etc., just isn’t worth it for items that I really don’t see any decisive advantage over good exotics in terms of gameplay. In fact, the only item above exotic-grade that I own on any of my characters is the Szygy (sp?) ascended amulet that I bought for my Norn female engineer from a laurel vendor a month or so back. I’d be much happier with getting good exotic armor sets and main weapons and accessories for all my level 80 characters, which I can actually do at a reasonable rate on TP or even via in-game drop, than waste my time chasing this particular chimaera.

I really feel sorry for those bunnies. After the lobotomy they are a sad, lethargic bunch…

Except that the hungry bunnies do still knock you over if you’re not careful. I know this for a fact because it happened to my newest character the other day when I did that particular renown heart, which is now located at the bottom of the cliff in Taigan Groves. And, in point of fact, I have no quarrel with it. The renown heart as it was previously was quite tedious and the bunnies were really a bit too active, plus which you ran the risk of falling to your death if you were in the wrong spot. This new version goes a lot faster. (I also notice that nobody seems to have commented on the new state of the renown heart involving trade with the jotun. There are a lot of low-level enemies there now which makes the heart go much faster because you can kill them to get it done and get XP in the process, which IMO greatly improves that heart, which previously was the most boring one in Wayfarer.)

NPE Feedback [Merged] - Please read 1st post

WRT to the personal story, I actually have a different issue concerning the character I have that’s most recently finished it (my Norn female engineer). Since I started her a couple of weeks before the NPE went live, by the time of the 9/9 patch she’d already gotten through the “My Greatest Fear” part of the storyline, so that wasn’t the problem. The actual problem is that the “cleansing of Orr” part seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle somehow for at least that character. After I completed the chain ov events involving the invasion of Cursed Shore, I got moved forward directly to “Victory or Death” without an intervening segment involving the cleansing of Orr. Based on what I’d heard elsewhere, I assumed that it had gotten moved forward to after “Victory Or Death”. However, I did the Arah dungeon story mode last night, thus completing “Victory or Death”, and that’s it. No cleansing of Orr. But I got “My Greatest Fear” earlier on.

Something is way off here.

Coil Event Fail Toxicity

I admit to being dense on occasion, but I’m having difficulty finding this toxicity you’re talking about. A few complaints, sure, but I was expecting wall-to-wall battles between the two sides and what I’m mainly reading about is things like conversations about USB mice and the usual trash-talking between players. So ???

Kicked from low population map?

Even on the highest-populated maps, in the busiest zones, you’re not always guaranteed of getting a lot of people to show up for an event. This afternoon, for example, I was in Cursed Shore near Caer Shadowfain when the Explorer Plinx chain came up for play. That’s usually a very popular chain (four events, not a far distance to run, at least one champion to fight and sometimes two), and usually the place is swarming with players. Today, though, it took forty minutes to lasso in enough players to start the chain; admittedly, there were other things going on simultaneously, including the defense of Arah, always a high-draw item. Even when we got enough people to get it going, I think there were only about 20-30 in the group, half or maybe less of the number that usually shows up. A little later, there were only about the same number of players on the Jofast escort/defense chain. In that case, that’s probably a good thing, since the battle wasn’t quite as insane as it was yesterday – I think we must have had three champions spawning during one attempt to defend the post. Simultaneously.

Kicked from low population map?

Maxwell: we never want to be forced to run around smothered by dozens of people who flock to each event, making them embarrasingly easy. We like our game fairly challenging and interesting, with small to moderate map populations. Simple as that.

You mean the world bosses and Orr event chain? What other events are dozens of people flocking to, smothering players? Also, what is the threshold for “too many players”?

Dozens? Ten? 100?

I was in Diessa Plateau the other day, happened to be leveling an alt with my gf (now fiancee go me!), so two of us. We were in the Meatoberfest area, saw the event where you need to protect the fireworks. When we got there, there were two others there. Ok now there are four of us. Halfway through the event, 3 more people showed up and finished it with us. No joke, one of the guys who was there from the beginning says “Where are all these people coming from! UGH stupid megaserver BS Anet ruined this game”.

There were seven people. SEVEN. And this guy thought it was too many people. I mean seriously. To me, 50 people is too many for an event. Dozens, which I will estimate at 24ish, is completely reasonable. If that is simply too many people to be “forced to” play next to for an event, then I really don’t know what to say.

This. I can think of any number of occasions on lower-population maps when I would have gotten down on my knees to thank the Six for seven people showing up to join an event, particularly when a tough boss was involved. Heck, I regularly guest on Tarnished Coast, one of the most heavily populated worlds, and I’ve done champion fights with only three or four other people (and won them too).

This new message asking you to transfer to a higher-population map never bothers me except when I’m actually in the middle of something intense, and even then not that much, since I can just do the transfer when I’m done with whatever I’m doing. I like having lots of other players on the same map with me, though I agree with you that there are times when there are really too many people trying to do an event, which does interfere with the chance of getting the max reward. I usually manage, though.

Temple of Melandru/Explorer Verene bugged

The Temple of Melandru event chain in Cursed Shore has been bugged since yesterday. More specifically, the NPC’s at Gavbeorn’s Landing, particularly Explorer Verene, won’t give the options needed to get the necessary pre-events going. Verene keeps asking characters to speak to her, but she won’t say anything (either of the dialogues necessary to start the events) when she’s clicked on. I’ve seen the “defend Gavbeorn’s Landing” event run at least twice today, which ought to have triggered the event chain, but nothing is happening. Please look at this.

"Content temporarily disabled" on level up?

I haven’t found anything about this, so I’m starting this topic; if somebody else has already noticed this, please merge. I’ve been noticing an odd error message today whenever I level up (3 times so far today) where I see the “This content has been temporarily disabled” message. I have no idea why this message should pop up when I advance a level. Has anyone else seen this?

This straight male fancies both of ’em. Which one he fancies more at any given moment depends on all sorts of subjective factors, including the weather.

Thank you ArenaNet!

8 achievements or 10, I’m glad to finally get the shattered wings (and I got the regular wings today as a drop from a coffer dropped by, of all things, a hard-shelled crab in Gendarran Fields).

The introduction of Marjory Delaqua in that classy noir-themed cutscene. I really want to see her again in another event after Dragon Bash ends.

I don’t know about making Marjory’s face available to players, but this is a well-designed, beautiful NPC, and I would love to encounter her again after the Dragon Bash story plays out. As I remarked in another post, from the way she looks at Logan, Queen Jennah just might have herself a rival.

Terrific cutscene, one of the best I’ve seen in GW2 so far. Marjory is an immediately intriguing NPC; I want to know more about what her story is (she seems to be of Canthan ancestry). Also, the way she looks at Logan seems to indicate that Jennah is at risk of having some competition.

My game partner remarked to me today that Marjory’s outfit should be made available to players. I don’t know if it’s practical to do it as an armor set, but making it available in the gem store as a new set of “town clothes” should be doable, and I think I might actually buy that for my female characters!

I certainly hope Marjory (and Lady Kasmeer) won’t be restricted to just this event; I’d like to see more of them in future stories where appropriate.
