Hi all, i’m putting out there my build of necromancer, having been fed up of playing many boon heavy specs, went with a necro build specific to take out boons…

Would anyone recommend anything better at boon removal?

I saw you were using signet of vampirism over consume conditions…. WHY?! People have ran the numbers, it is the worst healing skill available to necromancers…

Keep in mind viable and optimal are always two different things. Many things are viable, only a few things are actually optimal. I personally don’t think power necros are optimal.

With that said though: Single people have changed the opinion of many about the viability of certain classes/builds. Maybe the community just lacks that one power necro that’s willing to make it happen. OP necro and Crysis in my opinion pretty much have made it work at a viable level they just need the team and general skills that conquest requires to get there and be successful.

Do think the build needs help in the way of sustain in order to be optimal. I find as a necro in the current meta with no guard you just get ping ponged around the map. Once a thief or an engi is focusing you, you are kinda done.

Now I know at one point Anet said that necros were “supposed to be the class you can just not get away from” well at this point that is not true. To help our sustain I think we need better in combat mobility (a ground targeted blink that isn’t flesh wurm) and access to vigor (without having to convert).

Oh and if we really are supposed to be the class you can’t get away from why can medi guards stick to any class like an overly drawn out simile?

It’s odd, because you’d think Dark Path + any movement debilitating skill (Grasping Dead, Dark Pact, maybe even Chilblains) would be enough. After all, DS2 teleports you to your target and chills them on a 15s cooldown, regardless of weapon set or utilities.

Except any class we pull that on has some way to get out of it. Just one teleport on us isn’t enough. Not to mention we are the class that has to try and perfectly time almost everything we do. We get punished most for missing our damaging combos.

So it sounds like there are two separate issues from the two responses so far:

  • Other classes can spec for insanely high DPS and still have mechanics to allow them to mitigate pressure through dodges/invulns/reflects/etc. When a Necro specs for insanely high DPS, they have basically none of that.
  • When trading damage for tankiness via spec, Necros are not afforded as much as other classes, so they still can’t really mitigate as much pressure as other classes scale to while losing the damage they once had.

My question is: what sort of self-healing in DS do you think Necros will be able to do that will bring them up to snuff? Do you think the vampiric traits will truly be enough to provide the sustain that is necessary? Does that mean that Necros would turn into bunkers, since going into Blood Magic would most probably sacrifice damage potential?

I’m asking pointed questions because I hear comments touted all the time seemingly without justification.

Would healing while in DS help the high DPS Necro builds sustain any better? Should they get any better sustain?

Would the vampiric traits cement a tankier role for Necros in the arenas where they are lacking representation (assuming high-level PvP)?

It shouldn’t happen through traits. It should just naturally happen. The problem it self is death shroud, anet is convinced that is our defensive mechanic, and they are convinced it is enough of a defensive mechanic when it’s clearly not. Heals need to be received in death shroud with out traits, from either party members/teammates or from heal skills like WoB.

I’m not sure threads should be done in this style….
It’s ok to not like a build but lets create a constructive
and somewhat positive thread on how to handle the build.

Maybe some tips and advice on how to counter?
Alternative builds for engineers to run?

Constructive feedback for anet to handle more than one metabuild within a match.

Constructive Feedback on turrets:

  • Even if not traited once Anet “fixed” them they became way too easy mode. Traits that increase the damage of a certain aspect of a class should also never be in that classes Toughness/healing power line.
  • One turret engi is okay to deal with in a match when you start to come across multiple in a match the amount of CC is ridiculous and the range on the turrets.
  • In a want to be competitive game AI builds should never be seen as even close to viable, (and yes people do see it as viable.)

Proposed Fixes:

  • Make the turrets do more damage trait in a different trait line.
  • If the engineer is “X” amount away from the turrets the turrets do not attack a target until the engineer attacks the target.
  • Lastly institute a policy that prevents more than one player of the same class per team per match.

My problem with necro sustain (coming from a power build) is that we start the match off with no life force because sacrificing minions before matches can’t happen anymore which is apparently supposed to be our defense according to anet, and we have no get out of jail free cards save for flesh wurm.

When you look at other insanely high DPS classes the have more than one way to deal with incoming pressure

  • Fresh Air eles: S/f has good projectile reflect/absorb+invuln and s/d has great mobility plus both have a ton of blinds.
  • Pew pew rangers have the longest range in the game because read the wind not only increases arrow speed it also artificially increases range.
  • Thieves depending on the build can stealth and get away (not always) or dodge for an entire fight being impossible to lock down.
  • Meditation Guards have some of the best self healing in the game along with tons of instant burst damage all while throwing out more blinds than you can shake a stick at.
  • Mesmers in some respects have better in combat mobility than thieves, as well as the ability to constantly evade, and interrupt (something we can usually do nothing about)

I think a good thing to help necromancer sustain out would be to change a healing skill to be the only non-traited healing skill in the game to heal us in death shroud. Well of Blood
Initial self heal and pulse heal remain the same, HOWEVER the pulse can heal the player through death shroud.

Edit: another thing that would help sustain in pvp at least is a 1200 range power weapon, literally every other class in the game has a 1200 range power weapon, or the capability to sustain a fight with a shorter range power weapon in a team fight. Necro has neither.

As a necro I despise pew pew rangers. I play a class that is least equipped to deal with an 1800 range pew pew, as read the wind artificially increases the range on an already traited longbow. It really depends on you class you play when facing the ranger on my mesmer or guard I’m fine, thief as well. That being said I think the only problem with pew pew ranger is it forces you to work as a team to get one guy down (this should be the norm however it is not sadly.), and the fact that read the wind increases range and velocity.

Also for those that say Power ranger is not the meta, the community disagrees with you:

Yes read the wind does artificially increase range. Looking at the range indicator on skills if i don’t have read the wind. The arrows get the “out of range” signal when I my range indicator is red. If I do have read the wind, then my arrows hit when the range indicator is red. I am informed and that is my biggest issue with pew pew ranger is a bug that causes the arrows to fly further and hence do more damage than what they should.

yep and have you ever heard of calculating distance speed time , the faster the object the futher it travels , this is a core machanic for all Projectile attacks , increasing its speed and Range improves its distance one way or onther . complain all you like Projectiles are not changing.

Except in a video game there should be a way to fix that. Such as programming in a way that when read the wind is traited “range is reduced by 300” thereby keeping it at its normal intended range.

Its funny because half the rangers die from melee by using long ranged weapons such as LB but when people like you complain about it proves that they don’t know how to play against one. Rangers already weak against heavy guys no need to nerf them any further.

Tip: when you can’t fight certain class try to make one for yourself and mess around with it (can do in HoTM insta 80) and when you play them you know what kills you the most aka the ’’weak’’ spot. good luck~

So I’ve been asking a lot on different twitch streams what people think. Could a team with a power necro win one of these big gw2 tourneys or is it just not capable of competing at that level?

Most say necros don’t have enough mobility and escapability but could we if we used wurm and spectral walk effectively? I’m still learning the ropes in spvp and am getting better but still don’t know a lot about the game. But it would definitely be disappointing if my favorite class and build couldn’t be used if I ever did get to that level.

The problem with being a power necro, is far and above it’s inability to escape effectively. Couple this with a general inability to apply consistent (Wells are not consistent) AOE power pressure. Yes dagger is now a great cleave weapon, however it is very tough to pull off in the AOE spam fest other classes can bring (Eles/engis oh hey look at the meta). Other problems power necros have in the current meta:

  • Lack of reflects/projectile absorption (pew pew rangers can eat a power necro alive)
  • Lack of access to boons for self. (Yes I know this is class design, it is still a major issue for necros.)
  • Lack of stability/reliable stunbreaks.
  • Lack of a good ranged power weapon (I would rather auto attack with staff than auto attack with axe.)
  • Being unable to receive heals in DS, ( I am referring to team heals, this one thing would improve Necro sustain to an amazing level)

That being said, if you have a good team that knows how to peel for you, how to give stability and when to focus a target. A power necro can destroy a team fight in as little as 10 seconds (without lich form.)

I think Anet is worried about touching necros in a meaningful way right now. The last time necros got some serious love “dhuumfire” got introduced and necros became the most OP class this game had seen in a long time. I think the one thing that Anet needs to look at is the escapes and survivability of our class. When you look at classes like s/f eles and s/d thieves they have great damage and pretty good survivability. Necros need something similar for them to become a legitimate power build.

Why are you still using axe? It has no cleave and it’s single target DPS still doesn’t match dagger.

Also you aren’t taking close to death. That is a huge damage loss.

For PvE last I checked the best weapons were force/bloodlust (could be wrong) and as far as weapons go, I run dagger/focus & dagger warhorn. Trait wise I think highest necro DPS trait spread is 6/6/x/x/2

6/6/x/x/2 seems like what I used for my Condi necro. Right now im using 6/2/x/x/6.

6/6/x/x/2 can swing both ways. However it gives you the best damage modifiers (close to death/ % more damage per condition)

making this build in the build editor.. If you go full zerk with eagle runes + assassins weps/earrings and captian accessories, you only have 64% crit chance. Any way to get this higher?

Don’t forget about fury on death shroud… You can just pop in and out real fast for an extra bit of fury. Also for pve you can take food etc.

Pretty simple question…Reaper’s Precision, a trait that gives you a chance to gain life force on critical hits. Does this work in Death Shroud?

Yes but because of how deathshroud drains. You won’t notice. It will just drain it slower.

I think people are talking about a whole lot of scenarios here.. in spvp or 1-1 I certainly prefer golem over lich, but in wvw lich all the way.

This post was in response to a comment BLU made about a team that used to run two power necros “Kinda cheesy because really they just pop lich form and spam one.” Basically things like that are why people hate on power necros. They hear a shoutcaster say “that’s all it is”, when even in small team fights or big teamfights a power necro brings way more than just lich, especially if the team has target focus.

The casters aren’t wrong. They aren’t talking about your mid level soloQ matches, they aren’t even talking about high tier soloQ matches, they’re casting a coordinated team game. Power Necro DPS compared to other DPS builds is completely ignorable, the only reason power necro is going to be run is for Lich. This is also why power necro is a joke in the highest tiers of play.

Doesn’t mean that the casters are right in everything they say, but the gist of what they are saying here is correct. Without Lich, power necros are just a subpar version of another power build.

Lich is a great skill. But the even in a coordinated team. A power necro can actually down opponents faster than a thief (maybe not as often), but definitely faster. Without Lich.

I know it has it’s moments…but wow, if anyone thinks it’s the most important aspect of a build XD

Lich is a very very situational elite. Like most elites. Alot of times I actually use it to either clean up a fight or even out a 2V1 but to claim as was said in ESL Power necro=lich spamming one is a little ridiculous.

Comes from Lich form spamming one…. not from
1. Life blast (vuln/might stacking)
2. Reapers touch+well of suffering combo (Which btw kills faster than any lich skill)
3. 3 Boon spinal Shivers strip
4. Dagger AA
5. Axe 2 (for those that run Axe)
6. Edit: Tainted shackles also hits like a freight train in a power necro…

No my friends all of power necro damage comes from lich form, and we are useless outside of that, our entire build is dependent on a 3 minute cooldown. Just ask the ESL shoutcasters….

BTW, can we get people that actually know the ins-and-outs of EVERY class to shoutcast. It would really save face for when someone makes a comment like “Power necro is cheesy because it solely depends on lich form.”

I myself love me some dagger focus. Sure the range on the focus is long compared to the dagger. However if you get off a reapers touch right in someones face. They will die. That skill hits so hard it’s awesome.

My only question is why was soloque removed? For the first year of this game being out from the time when there was only one map per week, and before Temple of the Silent Storm was introduced. People asked for separate ques for teams and solo players.

It took a really long time by anet did it. Almost everyone welcomed the change. The biggest downside to soloque overall though was skyhammer. That was about it.

So my big question is why were the ques remerged? What happened, and what is the reasoning behind remerging the ques?

Edit: I was away from the game for about 4 months so this is why I don’t know.

So mesmer was my main for quite sometime then I just couldn’t deal with how Anet was screwing them up over last year. I took a 4 month break and lo and behold they fixed alot of the mesmer issues. I like that scepter is finally a good condition weapon and it seems that a shatter condition build can be used now…. Looking for feedback on this build for PvP as a condi mesmer.

I hope GS does massive bleeds. Scepter is the only full-on condi-weapon but is fairly long range and so is limited in direct damage. Necro has dagger and axe for power weapons leaving staff and off-hand as general utilities.

Axe is a terrible power weapon. Our GS needs to be a GREAT power melee weapon. The dagger is cool except it lacks GOOD cleave. Like what the GS on ranger/warrior/guard do. Mesmer has good cleave if you consider the Zerker. Melee/Cleave power house

A mediocre Warrior is a liability. A mediocre Mesmer gets a slap to the wrist. Why? Nothing hard about classes that spam defensive evade block blind crap as they DPS, nothing hard about vertical range, and there is nothing hard about untelegraphed instant DPS.

Engis and Rangers both got changes that are really going to help the class and buff the completely underpowered specs in the class… Is this the plan for all classes?

I saw a few things that I really liked. The thing I liked most is comboing a certain aspect of a trait and making it just baseline with the skill… With that said… Mesmers have been screaming for months that this needs to happen with some of their most basic skills…

Are you guys actually going to show us how you are going to fix mesmers in the next ready up? Or should some of our mesmers just stay shelved because our teams absolutely refuse to let us play them for competitive matches.

Edit: But in all honesty I think 90% of the mesmer players would be happy if you just fixed the bugs.

A warrior landing 12k eviscerates is full glass. A thief gets stealth, a warrior gets Defy Pain.. but if you think of them as thieves they’re not so bad.

There are warriors running around, that do insane damage, and never die. They barely take any damage at all, and conditions have no effect on them…. (not talking about the stance)

…when you see one of those ones, just report them. Let Anet sort it out.

I run celestial or valks 2/0/6/0/6 warrior… Not full glass by any stretch. I regularly land 10k+ eviscerates.

It was always 10s ICD. Dogged march isn’t useful in PvP cleansing ire covers condi removal .

The regen you get is on a 10s ICD HOWEVER. All impeding conditions are reduced by 33% IE cripple chilll immob. You just don’t get the regen every time you get those conditions.

Hi Anet,

Solo queue is a complete farce. You know it is. I’m tired of 1v3in’g the enemy team only to discover my rabbit ranked teammates failed a 4v2. I’m tired of looking at rosters, recognizing the one good person I’m matched against and pitying both of us as our inexperienced teams decide the fate of the game.

Why haven’t you removed skyhammer yet? Why don’t you increase queue times and offer a “sorry” message if no worthwhile teammates can be found? This is ridiculous. No wonder everyone at the top doesn’t queue regularly; you automatically enter a disadvantaged situation because the other team gets less rank 1’s.

You realize that people at level 80 often use bunny finishers to troll other players that actually think rank means something… I stopped reading at that but yeah just saying.

Are Warriors the benchmark profession?

I think as far as design goals go, Warriors are pretty good as a target.
They have:

  • Ability to scale themselves all the way from very high damage to very tanky.
  • Multiple ranged and melee options.
  • Strong group support.
  • Strong selfish setups.
  • Useful in sPvP, WvW, PvE, open world, dungeons, everything. Never the wrong profession to bring.
  • Stack well with themselves.
  • Stack well with external support.

The only think missing is a clearly defined weakness for PvP reasons, IMO. Like Mesmers being rubbish around lots of AE because the illusions won’t even really spawn, Warriors need something to define their achilles heel. Doesn’t have to be terminal and doesn’t have to always be an issue (only in select cases), but yeah, something minor.

Their weakness used to be conditions and drawn-out fights, but the Warriors in sPvP QQ’d so much Anet destroyed their weakness. Now they have none.

This for the most part is true. Now if only Anet would listen to mesmers QQ about their condi problems and necros qq about getting pingponged all over the effing place.

@jportell… I would be very curious to know Marvin’s opinion on the state of the game’s balance in tpvp. I could see him agreeing that mes is weak at low level play, but I couldn’t imagine him saying that it isn’t viable.

If mes was truly truly viable at high level play it would see use on multiple teams (at least half which allows for other of the 8 classes.) Right now mes is only viable in the hands of people like helseth…. It used to be viable and used by many more teams but now is hardly used at all.

Turret engi too str0nk. In all honesty anyone claiming to be good based off of being a turret engi really has absolutely no semblance of what balance is.

A.) I never claimed to be good.
B.) I’ve played less than 10% of my over 1k matches on engie.
C.) Your guild runs these.
D.) None of this has anything to do with the main point of the thread, which I will re-paraphrase for the 7th or 8th time now. It is wrong to compare specific skills directly without consideration of the overall build and it’s class mechanics.
E.) I never claimed turret engies aren’t op. I simply said that they have a significant weakness.
F.) I have played a significant amount of matches on almost every class. I multi-class significantly more than the majority of players. I like to believe I have a very good idea of the balance and paper rock scissors aspect of this game.
G.)That comment had one purpose which was to be rude and attack my credibility. Please learn to read before you make yourself look bad.

To your 3rd champ title. My guild has stopped running these for the most part. Mainly because my main guild team (which I am in) has gotten to the point where we wreck turret engis every match. And significant is subjective in this context. If you only have almost 3 champ titles I can assure you that you don’t have enough experience across all classes to rightfully talk about balance.

People like Marvin who have 8/8 titles, are more likley to know enough to talk about balance at high level plays.

On point of this thread if you look at one of my earlier posts I mention exactly why class comparison should happen.

It is mainly because Anet designed all classes to be able to fill most roles in this game…. right now it definitely isn’t happening especially with the mesmer profession, (my mesmer has been shelved for the last 6 months… so yeah.)

You’re really suggesting more tooltip changes?

Oh, not at all muffin, I’m suggesting that they follow the lead taken with Illusionary Leap and change the skill to match the tooltip. I know, I know — sounds like a lot of work compared to just rewriting tooltips, but that’s why we’re here to help support our devs in getting their ‘vision’ of the game on track.

If they did that it would change gameplay completely though… Many skills (such as the eles dragon tooth) get just as much use with no target as with one selected. I don’t see how it would benefit the game to make these skills specifically require a target in order to activate…

Also I like muffins.

That is the whole flipping point of this thread. The “bugged” illusionary leap was a great way for mesmers to try and survive in the AOE spam fest that is tPvP… Now they just as well delete the class as a whole instead of these needless bugfixes (read nerfs) that keep happening which is shafting this class every month or so.

Lol, bullkitten. No one thought staff was viable until the changes to Water’s Grandmaster Trait. He played it with your team, but frankly no one thought your team was great until you ran a comp comprised solely of bunker/support meta builds.

It’s cool that you guys have been around for longer than your builds though I’m not sure why time investment is a source of pride. Thanks for letting the player base know that you indeed were a team before anyone heard of you.

Readymade is someone that was running staff when staff ele was still laughed at. He has also consistently maintained top 100 leaderboard ranking in both soloque and team que playing nothing but staff ele…. So no your ele is not responsible for bringing staff ele back into the meta especially since I can name several staff eles that have been running staff longer than your ele on apex. Josre, and Readymade are the first two that come to mind.

Not to sound mean but you can play old school 100b warrior against people most teams that don’t really know what they are doing. That doesn’t mean it has been brought back into the meta. The meta trends are set at the highest level. I am pretty sure absolutely zero know about the people you just mentioned and were not on a competitive team to face against GF at the time to make a name for themselves. You have to be successful with it and have other people notice to make a claim such as that. I am not taking away the fact your eles may indeed have played staff ele, but there is more substance to when I say someone brought back staff ele as opposed to just playing it.

They may not have dedicated teams because they have lives that require more time than is available to dedicate to a team and both eles I mentioned are in the top 100s on both LBs which means that if any eles wanted a staff ele to look to as an example they were there and both of them are very friendly and willing to share their builds and knowledge about how to play them. Giving someone credit for singlehandedly bringing something back into the meta (also it was almost never meta) is ridiculous because the community is alot bigger than people that watched the TOL and these two eles have been in the game for a long time and as far as I know they have not played anything but staff ele. I have seen several staff eles in teampvp that do exceptionally well (both before and after the patch.)

The problem is not mesmer balance….the problem people playing one class in only one aspect of the game. If you only play less that 5% of the game don’t expect to be able to do 100% of things.

Also….null feild is probably one of most op wvw skills. Mesmers also make extremely effective roamers and scouts when you’re bored. I enjoy the mesmer. It is viable in every aspect of the game, although I would personally like to see it buffed a little in pve, especially for low levels.

mesmer is useless at any aspects of game. It is said by main mesmer.
PvP – useless
WvW – veilbot + even almost 0 abilities to tag enemies to receive loot(“null feild is probably one of most op wvw skills” – Necros laugh at this xD.)
PvE – portalbot at CoF – nothing more.
Mesmers only viable at 1×1 or at small roaming groups at open field. You can enjoy mesmer, but if you play some different classes you will se his defectiveness.

Ill raise you with thief, except we don’t have anything close to veil or mass invis.

thieves feel good at spvp and are kings at roaming

Thieves are used much more in PvP than mesmers.

Based on what exactly?

Based on several thousand tpvp games with a team that uses a thief (and almost never a mesmer) getting beaten by teams that have thieves more often than teams that have mesmers. The fact that aside from apex almost every NA team that got anywhere in the last TOL had a thief and not a mesmer.

To be blunt cross class comparison has to be performed in this game because everything revolves around 5 person groups (tPvP, dungeons, wow havoc groups, etc etc.) and there are 8 classes. You have to look at what each class can bring to a party especially at situations like high level tPvP because in that respect it is about maximizing how well you can stand in a circle and take a beating while getting the enemy out of the circle either by killing them or pressuring them so much they have to leave the point.

To be even more blunt it has to happen in the tPvP sense because even within tpvp you have to look at roles such as
1. Team fight bunker
2. Back point defender (he doesn’t stand there the whole match but would be the first to go there if it got contested.)
3. Condition pressure (currently engineers perform this better than necros because they have more survivability.)
4. Roamer (yes mesmer has portal but thief mobility still out performs mesmer as a roamer.)
5. Burster (usually a thief fulfilling two roles or a properly played fresh air or staff ele.)

Sometimes a mesmer can fill a role but currently there is always a class that can do this role better.

The premise of this thread is ridiculous because anet designed all classes to fulfill similar roles (some classes filling roles better than others.) So because of that comparison needs to happen so that all classes can fulfill similar roles just in slightly different ways…
