5 minutes late to reset, 40 minute (and counting) queue. I don’t like the new Maguuma.
I get home from work at about 6pm pacific time and even weeks ago there would usually be a queue for me once I got home. I normally stand outside of Divinities Reach Bank and try on different dye’s and try to pose in the right lighting until the map opens up.
NSP
I’m avoiding using Para on my S/D combo because it will probably get fixed someday. I figure if I don’t ever use it I won’t have to get sad when it’s awesomeness is gone. So purposefulness gimping myself for now…
I have my oddities like that also, and in fact, that’s the same reason I’m not using the same item yet even though I really should not worry about it. It’s sort of on the same thought as to why I don’t use racial elites, I try to stay standardized and use things that are activated in every area of the game. Not a big deal really, even one or two seconds shuts down an arrow cart usually.
NSP
Wooosh! Way to miss the point entirely.
I got your point, I responded to it, it may be you confused yourself. You didn’t enjoy fighting Maguuma after the transfers, indicating you’re upset about the appearance of being outnumbered every fight. I explained why you shouldn’t be upset, if you meant something else, try more context and less smiley faces.
NSP
Sorry to hear that
Hopefully things change for you guys, so it will be back to normal… Don’t really know how it was before the transfers, but it seemed to have been much better… Or at-least balanced.
I wasn’t serious with that post, unless you meant that’s what you got out of the thread according to people on the other servers.
NSP
From what I’ve learned from most of the threads.
1. Maguuma seems to be immensely over-hyped.
2. They are playing against “dead” WvW servers.
3. They like to chest-bump about it quite a bit.
4. They are just a band-wagon server now.
Did I get it all right?
That about sums it up.
NSP
We really enjoyed the fights with Mag prior to the transfers, now not so much.
Quite possible we are in for another week of the same with Kaineng, oh well. It will be nice when the dust finally settles from the free transfers and the tiers even back out again.
People should enjoy a match based on how much fun they have fighting with their servers community rather then who they’re fighting against. A solid server community, even when get wrecked in a match, is addictive. More people trickle in when they hear their guildies talking about the crazy stuff that happened in w3, and eventually word spreads across servers.
NSP
I would be interested to see whether full P/V/T gear and trinkets would actually work with Thief. I’m currently using a mix of pvt, ppt and berserker gear for sword/dagger which is a solid direct damage with decent survival. Not as bursty as full zerk and not as elusive as full carrion, but the mix of toughness, vitality and stealth make me extremely hardy with high consistent damage without the total reliance on crit and crit damage or health and condition damage.
I don’t get a lot of time to play and I only play w3, so I always have a budget build. My sword/dagger thief has p/v/t armor with berzerker trinkets. I tried a mix of stuff, looted and temple, and I tried heavy p/v/t, you feel it when someone gets away from you with a sliver of life and you know you should have finished them off. Likewise you also feel it when you could have got away but one last dot tick took you down.
I just recently switched to zerker sword with dagger, with p/v/t armor and zerker trinkets, and I feel that I still have enough t/v to get in the mix but that extra precision and crit damage is apparent.
NSP
More on point, the whole downed system was clearly created with PVE in mind. I think they realized that the only way to create a game with no healers or tanks was to just include dying and ressing as part of the process. Its clunky and I can’t imagine anyone wouldn’t just prefer tank and healer classes, of course maybe I’m wrong. Either way, it really has no place in WvW or PvP and I’d rather they just got rid of it.
Rift might still have healing trains if that’s what you’re into.
NSP
I wish most people would just waypoint, repair, and run back. I don’t like the clutter in a fight of a bunch of dead people not doing anything, and it is visually a hassle often to run up to an ally on the ground and start res’ing to find out they’re full dead, I think it fools me a lot because full deads can die in a posture that looks like they’re waving their hand.
Unless everyone packed some instant repair canisters I’d rather have allies get out of the way and repair. More often then not the next stop for our group likely as close if not closer to the nearest waypoint and they can meet you there. I will go to stupid extremes to try and rally downed allies though.
NSP
Sounds like fun, and that’s an awesome list of instructors. I’ll probably miss them due to work but I’d like to catch them when I can. I’ve been on Mag since beta but I’d sit in on the Basics on up, the only thing I know is that there’s always something I don’t know yet.
NSP
Our oceanic presence (well, and our NA/European presences) all server transferred this past week. Now it looks like it’s time for me to figure out where I should go
You could stay there and become the one. Kind of like at the end of Braveheart when Wallace ran across mountains clubbing all the turncoats.
NSP
Most likely anyone that dedicated to their server in w3 has already spent all their gold on keep and tower upgrades along with repairs.
NSP
That daze is a more on demand daze which I prefer when I’m on interception for stompers. B-venom is entirely unreliable and I have to pull the pre-C&D+Mug to get off Tactical Strike fast enough to keep my commander or others from eating dirt.
NSP
I guess I am trying to nicely ask, how do you keep order without a nazi germany gestapo feel working itself in? Tact is important, but is that all you use?
I still think this is a valid question for you haring Maguumians, despite some insane moderation happening atm.
As an average Maguuman with limited play time, when I log in after work and jump into the action, I can be pretty certain that any of the commanders that are on are playing with us rather then over us. Icon or no, the people who have the time and interest to lead squads or groups pretty much just play the game, letting everyone know what they’re doing and you’re welcome to join in.
I wish I had more time to play and be on mumble as it’s the kind of atmosphere I can game in. After awhile you might figure out who the commanders are but for the most part, everyone who’s on there are communicating and working their part of the fight. The regulars just play the game and if they have time they’ll explain what they’re doing so over time, people just know what to do.
NSP
Out of all these threads on this topic, I haven’t caught anything about Ascended gear in w3 yet. I don’t care about ranks, usually just tells me who plays the most hours a day to be useless, and adding any sort of combat edge for time played sort of shafts people who work but contribute more to w3 in an hour or two then the pve leechers who can play all day while they flunk school and their kids go hungry but somehow don’t have the silver to buy one upgrade.
Fix what needs fixing, stretch out and fill the terrain we can fight over, and add more skins. Aside from that, we could use a better ui for squads, for both commander and troops.

There are none currently, my main gripe as well. The Vigil chest piece, Duelist, T3 culture, and Ascalonian all look good, but they all still fall under the “coat/dress/skirt/kilt” idea. If you want to look lite, use heavy armor. If you want to look absurdly heavy, use medium armor.
NSP
I hope Anet considers any possible problems but I really hope they just make their own system and not read too much into these threads.

Having never participated in sPvP, why would someone duel in WvW when they can do that in sPvP?
Seems like if you do it in WvW you are asking for someone to interfere.
From that sound bite, it sounds like sPvP will have spectator mode and rankings. I’ve seen maybe one person on any of these threads admit to losing a duel. I’ve seen no one admit to losing a 5v5, they will simply have to be better or be silent in sPvP where here, both sides can make up any story they want.
NSP
You say this like I say that like Mag has any choice in the matter. I think the turnout we have for what is very much a blowout is pretty indicative that people want to and enjoy winning. It’s just not going to happen.
Of course we like winning, but I think our server enjoys winning the campaign while we’re logged on, coupled with a bit of setup for our next time zones, with the people we’ve been gaming with for months now. It’s not very practical to aim a couple of tiers above where server populations simply aren’t comparable or reliable whether in our favor or not as we’re seeing in this tier right currently.
NSP
Weak Sauce Pansies sounds like a Seattle band. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, it’s likely they weren’t very present in the first place anyway. Plus, large guilds from higher tiers finding new homes on smaller population lower tiers seems to be the it thing to do.
NSP
I stopped using Guard a couple of matches ago when people on other servers were getting used to it. After a couple of arrow carts or a treb unless they’re entirely bad defenders or attackers then that pet is toast.
NSP
Well, you have to admit that it mostly comes from just a handful of players, publicly vocal about it they may be. The bulk of us simply want to play the game as best we can, and don’t embrace the drama any more than you do.
Every server has their skritt, you just have to hope they only go full skrittard like once a month instead of every week.
NSP
Yep I’ve seen this too. Just a sign that the game can’t handle thieves right now and they should be nerfed to the kittening ground until stealth is fixed.
You mean you can’t handle thieves, unless you would like to revise your post a bit. If you can’t handle my sword/dagger thief who is mostly P/T/V and other cheap gear who almost never stealths and actually uses Flanking Strike often then there is no class you will handle. Or you could say there’s a certain powerful build compounded by a game design flaw which is currently being dealt with, and overbalancing it right now could render it unplayable after the culling fix.
NSP
This thread has turned from something quasi-positive into a bickering argument between us. I’d rather keep that off the forums so if you really feel the need to continue attacking my statements do it through PMs please.
My statement of thieves dying is coming from a thief player. I make mistakes often and get blown up for them. That’s a truth coming from experience. Also, guardians eat thieves for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
There’s really no way this thread can be positive. No one will acknowledge anyone but themselves or their guildies as being the best and just like all those Simpsons Comic Book Guy’s bashing any gameplay video, people will bash any recommendation on this thread. Plus, it’s about thieves, you know?
NSP
…
Also, the commanders from those guilds mentioned and others use their icon but never hang it above the pubs. I’ve seen some of our commanders ransack bl keeps, carpet bomb stone mists, and turn a map one color…then five minutes later I’ll see them escorting a yak or rallying their squad to help out some random pub who’s spent time and money on upgrades and defense.
That sort of atmosphere makes a difference. On a community level though, I tend to see defenders and attackers take shifts Oozo or a commander might rotate the different groups around naturally.
NSP
I ended up with that build more so then picked it. It seemed to have the most traits I needed during those “I need one of those” moments I mentioned or traits to switch around for whatever. Again, I used what I could afford, and changed out a few pieces to hit some vitality thresholds, but there’s no real plan there. It’s somewhat of an in-lock down-control-then out/or team push and burn, I really should have leveled a warrior instead.
There’s definitely some ‘real’ builds posted on here and hopefully some people can post a few and help you narrow it down some to some sort of theme. Aside from critical haste and executioner, I dodge a lot because that was a mechanic in another mmo I played and I’m used to it so I have quite a few traits, the number fluctuates, that trigger on dodge. If you do pick a theme that someone posts on here, try to have your weapons, traits, and utility multitask when you can so you can have more trigger from one thing when possible and simmer down the number of actions and keybinds you have to mess around with.

There are a string of skills that are a gimmick, but there’s nothing to be frowned upon with Mug itself. Shortbow is nice also for w3, it has one of the easiest on demand blast combo finishers among a full set of very solid skills and utility on one weapon. I have 10/30/0/20/10 with mostly P/V/T and a mix of whatever I could afford from karma temples and badges or loot with sword/dagger-shortbow. I didn’t over think my entire build, just added and changed what I needed along the way bit by bit.
From what I’ve experienced, whatever sets and gear we have equipped, we’re going to do our damage unless the thief has gone full skrittard. I would build first for having an answer to every enemy action, keeping and setting the pace, and considering myself and my teams combo fields and finishers, then fill up the rest of your cup with damage.
NSP
I’m finding that I function the best as a tanky BM build. I tried running as a glass cannon, but it seems I often get doubleteamed by hit-and-run stealth thieves or dagger/dagger eles for them to rush into the zerg to try to kill and get back out safely with their lame mistform/ride the lightening or stealth. Probably my positioning sucks or they like to single out the historically weak ranger. With this build I stay alive pretty kitten easily in most situations and can last until I get to friendly lines unless I really get zerged.
Anyhow my job is to stay alive to add my meager dps to focus fire targets, help revive downed team mates and to cast healing spring. Healing spring is so good I don’t feel guilty for not bringing any other utility.
It won’t be meager if you’re keeping your pet up and have an easy keymap to command them. If you use your control skills your pet will clean up, I normally daze then burn siege operators or sometimes dodge in or sword#2 un-targeted into their battery and drop Entangle and fire trap/healing spring then axe#5 while my group pushes in. Once you memorize your skill roll out so you’re playing it like a piano, as long as you’re controlling targets you’re going to see bags on the ground.
NSP
…they would be better trying to retake stuff in their own borderlands.
If for nothing ells, regardless of what the points look like at the end of the match, then to not totally dishearten the general pub. We’ve been in some matches where it felt like every day I’d log on and all of our stuff is gone and there’s a certain sunk feeling when you see your keeps a different color at the height of prime time and you pretty much know everyone’s called it until next match up. The general player doesn’t want to solo across a map of hostile color or try to defend stuff on their own and will go run fractals.
There was a period where it felt like we took a pretty steady population dive over a few weeks but our commanders simply get better every week at working together and securing stuff like that is always priority, practically and symbolically and though we’re still not a large server, at least our active community has been growing steadily for awhile despite most of our transfers or newly interested players not being very numerous and mostly just trickling in.

thanks for the advice will look into the the condition purge chance sigil
Actually my whole post was more in question form, I’ve been using one of them on my bow for only a short while and am not even sure how reliable their chance to trigger is.
NSP
Thieves don’t like being controlled, even the good ones which there are very few, my thief main sure doesn’t. Keep them controlled while your pet has lunch and sit on Q zephyr or another burst for last hit before they can reset the fight then swap pet if you have 5 bm and stomp. Go for that quickness stomp if you can, even if they don’t trait for downed damage, that knife throw can turn any low health into a revive.
If the thief keeps hitting and running off for a reset, let them go rest up while you rest up, they want you to slowly kill yourself on them while they go in and out of stealth chasing them like any good zergling should do. I guarantee they’re going to rage on the inside if they come back at you and you’re rested and ready to roll with a smile with fully refreshed cool downs. They want to lure you, so deny them that and just go about your business while they slowly, or quickly, kill themselves on you.
NSP
If you’re only up against like 5 foes, with a good chance of being downed, why not change that plus 10 healing on kill sigil for a condition purge chance sigil if you’re not going with Signet of Renewal for condition removal+stun break? I prefer the regen signet myself but I also keep a stun break of some kind on my bar, even if it doesn’t break immobilize, it will at least let you hit shortbow #3.
NSP
Just so you guys know, even though you get an error when you post, it almost always goes through. I’ve yet to see one not. So please just hit your browser back button and refresh so we don’t all have to stare at triple posts.
I’m a fan of this old school T5 rap we’ve got going on though. Kind of feels like we’re building up to an 80’s b-movie style gang rumble.
NSP
Hey Cempa you should test out running the Wolf, I’ve now got my pet set to avoid combat in WvW, reason being is they die to easy and a new combo I’ve found to be extremely effective.
When I get jumped by group of players I get stunned/KD/Imbo normally you would die, or I need run into zergs to down someone. I petswap to my wolf and F2 and thanks to being on avoid combat he uses his Fear right away. And if you run 15 in Bm you have fear every 25 seconds the CD will reset on pet swap, so No 45 second wait on your F2.
I set my pets to avoid combat at times myself, there are fights like golems knocking on a door at garrison or a keep which are basically big balls of light and my pet won’t realistically do any amount of hurt to anyone there or in some other flash fires so I pocket them at those times for their f2 or to attack on my command. Over time though you put together a better keymap layout for your pet commands and you get better at knowing when to unleash and when to pull them back.

Thank you much Paralda and the gang for running an action packed siege night. I’m sure the ‘roamers’ get theirs but the defenders and attackers were beast mode tonight.

It’s two close range evades you can stagger, one keeps you where you are, the other can reposition you. It doesn’t seem very dull when you think of an entire encounter and what will be coming at you.

I quit Rift due to all of the content updates, one week out of town and my work schedule meant I’d never catch up to my friends, and there was no WvWvW equivalent. There’s plenty of content generated by the W3 design and our servers opponents, couple that with an awesome community like Maguuma has and the hour or two on week days I get keeps the game going for me.
I can’t afford to build precisely, I have to gear up through karma and badges. I’ll never have a legendary weapon and probably wont have Ascended gear unless it ends up in W3 someday. I do have a few solid squads to run around with and my Vigil chest piece skin and invaders sword.
The only way the game has slowed for me is the Fractals update which is a disconnect, sort of like the Age of Conan expansion. Can’t understand why expansions don’t expand what’s in game rather then tacking on a new map or instance, but it pretty much split myself apart from my friends from other games as they’re more into pve grinding. Those of us who are into open pvp still enjoy W3 and would still enjoy the pve world if it wasn’t so forgotten, Timberline Falls was one of the best maps in any game I’ve explored. Juice up the game that’s already here like Jump to Light Speed for Starwars Galaxies and let us players generate the rest, but throw a few coppers towards WvWvW while you’re at it.
NSP
If you’re going with those stats, you’ll probably have a sword/something on switch. Aside from longbow skills feeling disconnected and not quite hitting a threshold, you have to be out of melee and even leap range to get max damage which means less damage overall closing the gap and creating one.
NSP
Find an easy to use hotkey scheme for your pet and keep them alive and biting people.
NSP
There have been times this match up where I wish all three servers still had comparative numbers but doubled. I feel like toe to toe, it’s been a better fight overall then our last match up, but that none of us can really spare the people to defend enough structures for very long and so we’ve all been sort of pigeon holed into running around with large forces to cut the siege time short.
The use of control skills is what I’ve noticed as a marked difference this match, it’s frustrating to think how awesome it would be if we all had the population to spread people around more and have more frequent small scale fights weaving in and out of the large scale.
NSP
I main a Ranger and a Mesmer. That being said.
They nerfed Mesmer Phantoms so that the berserker couldnt be used on top of walls when no LOS because people complained. They should do the same for every class.
Ranger’s Guard ability.
Ele’s multiple abilites.
Any other class that doesnt require LOS.Doesnt matter if class is OP or UP. Should be a consistent rule.
Just my 2 cents but wont kill me if noting is changed, Ill just deal with it.
I’d take the current phantom mechanic for my pet instead of using guard. Once your pet dies, by the time you get out of combat so your pet can revive or you switch to second pet and wait for guard cool down, the siege is likely over. I include the unreliability of finding the right combination of terrain and wall.
I’ve used this a few times, but I’ve gone back to taking pot shots to ledge shooters or shooting from ledge. If I get pulled off a wall or am flanked on the ground I’d rather have something useful in that utility slot.
NSP
I’m sure this post is meant in good humor but I’d like to see where it goes.
NSP
If you think about it to much you’ll just get frustrated and rage rezz. I usually unload heavy and fast, leopard chill with wolf on switch and shortbow daze to sword/whatever and chill or spike trap. If they live then I’ll make the fight really slow for them, they want you and your whole zerg to chase them, so make them come into your hurt box and toy with them until they kill themselves if you don’t burst them down with control and damage quickly enough.
I’ve built for my cat and dog even though my points look more like the trap build, try and think about doing more with less going on with your build and cram as many effects into one trigger as you can.
NSP
If you’re just headbashing against each other all day all night you deserve to play a ‘boring game’ that you play.
Learn to flank, lure, surround, combo fields, execute.
Your typical useless “L2P” response that these forums are littered with. As if that adds anything to the discussion.
This isn’t about downed state, not sure what made you think it is.
Resurrecting refers to the revival of already defeated players….defeated as in dead.
You should not be able to revive dead players in combat is all I’m saying. For the sake of WvW and the entire game really.
I agree with you if you’re talking about already defeated. I enjoy the down state minus the the disparity between classes, but dead is final. I think we’d see much more real action if that were the case as of right now either side can afford to leave teammates hanging during a fight as long as they can bunker long enough for the rest of the zerg to get there and they can rezz everyone after.
NSP
Nearly all of that mentioned in this thread is available in this ranger, I did most of all that last night in w3 for my teams.
NSP
I’ve rezzed at sm before and use a repair canister rather then run upstairs, repair, then run back down and out. I did pause a second and look up the ramp and considered it, but then I decided, not today.

Skill shots are fine if they take an investment in skill for a proportionately good reward. FS, by contrast, takes an investment in skill to not be absolutely terrible, and even then it isn’t very good.
FS lands about as often and reliably as anything else for me after learning to leave my camera facing alone or how to interfere with it right. It really only needs to lock out your own movement aside from dodging and lock on target until the second hit or animation is done like the ranger sword 3 and it will be just fine even for general player use.
NSP

What works on one map will end up working better then what works on the other two, and a static terrain advantage can snowball over a week match.
