Honestly I feel that BLTC keys need to become less prevalent as an in-game reward. I think keyfarming has done serious damage to its ability to offer consistent rewards.

Consider the following:
Story missions nerfed. Keys now granted at 31, 50 and 80.
Keys will now always provide a scrap, with a modest (10-20%) chance for a full ticket.
3 random item slots.
1 random booster slot.

Do you realize the ridiculously small % of the player base that farms keys regularly? vs buying keys? Trust me, if key farming was truly an issue Anet would of done something about it a very long time ago.

if they changed it in a few days, they probably think it is doing some damage.

well dungeon token is essentially gold. There are ways to convert it to gold, and you can convert gold to gems and to keys…

The only difference is the conversion rate is probably not very good.

is blk farming really getting nerfed?

I’m sure part of the problem is that the China launch took a huge amount of work and everyone is playing catch up. Pushing the devs to work harder and harder isn’t actually going to get us new content faster. It just means more burnout, which affects the speed at which stuff is released.

Even without the extra pressure, game development and specifically MMO development is just brutal at times. Like it’s almost always crunch time.

People want what they want now, without really understanding why they can’t have it on their schedule.

I disagree. I would be very surprised if the devs from NA & EU are working on content for the China server. The government there is suspicious of all foreign media workers. Foreign companies have to link up with a Chinese company to sell their wares on China’s mainland. Ryan Budish, a member of Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, told the Washington Post in today’s article on business in China, “You can’t exactly just move in there and do business.” (Quote comkes from here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2014/09/03/linkedin-thinking-twice-about-its-adoption-of-chinas-aggressive-censorship/)

There is a long process that foreign game companies have to go because of the the government’s “famous” censorship policies. All companies from the West have a separate team that communicates with their Chinese counterpart. I would be very surprised if Anet’s devs are doing the work that a specialized “China business team” would do.

I don’t think the devs are training their Chinese counterparts either. China is has alot of already trained software developers and game artists. The Chinese have also been making their own games for at least a decade. Perfect World, the infamous pay-to-win MMO, comes from the People’s Republic of China.

Links that give an overview of the Chinese game industry:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_gaming_in_China

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_gaming_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_China#Video_games

There’s a very high chance that the Sept update was most likely created by game devs from mainland China, not by the NA / EU devs. It’s illegal to show images of death in China, and that’s why the Downed State was censored until level 5. For sure, the company is testing to see if the censored down state would be accepted here. I’ve seen this political / social move before (FYI: It’s helps to be part of a family that has been doing international business for 500 years!). It’s also why we don’t also have a tutorial for the Downed State, most of the changes in the feature pack are cosmetic, and why we’re not seeing any much needed content updates.

So that leaves the question: What have the NA / EU devs really been up to? Just something to think about.

So when they said they’ve all been busy with the China release they were lying?

Right but I’m not sure the NA / EU players care what they are doing in China.

I dont’ know if they are working on the expansion. But I always have the feeling they also need to consider China when they release their expansion.

I don’t think their release an expansion before or near their China release, so my perdiction is always if they are going to release their expansion, it’ll be 1 year after the China release.

That being said, the NA/EU will continue to leek players during that time.

There is a reason other mmorpg designed their games around this “end game idea”. Because many people actually want it this way.

GW2 isn’t exactly a sandbox games, those are the type of games, that the end game start at lvl1.

I think this no end game thing is coming back to hunt them. That being said, to design more content for veteran gamers probably take lots of work. (and I dont’ mean silly achievement or collection various skins)

This thread should be merged with the many other threads on the same topic.

Here’s one on the first page of this very sub forum:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/bltc/The-Gem-Store-It-has-contaminated-GW2/first#post4357520

In regards to the OP, Anet needs to have cash inflow to support their operations. Selling boosts and other random consumables will not do that. They are also a for-profit company so they cannot operate at cost. So as a result, they create various skins and other convenience items for players to purchase with cash or gold. These are all completely optional and have no impact on the game play.

Also be aware that you paid for the game as it was when it was released. You did not pay ~$60 for the entire game and all future content updates. I did not buy Assassin’s Creed and expect to be given all of the additional DLC’s for free. These had to be paid for just as all of the continued support from Anet and the numerous content updates that we get. Those who play the game for free (don’t support Anet through gem purchases) have their content updates to the game subsidized by paying players.

It’s entitlement to think you should get free content beyond what a game originally provided at the expense of the developer. Games originally had subscriptions so that everyone pulled their weight for supporting the game’s operations. In this game, you don’t have to commit a single dollar after your initial purchase and instead get everything because of paying players.

Essentially, you get what you paid for.

I’m not sure what you are talking about. The video never says players should be able to play for free.

What they are discussing is what we discussed last time. Many F2P games seemed to focus on this whales. You are telling me you think most transactions are from many players with small payments over times. But the video says many of this F2P games have 10% of the players paying 90% of the money.

I think there is some truth is both. It depends on how the cash shop and economy is designed.

My personally feeling with GW2 is since there are gem exchange system, and no power creep, it is very unlikely for a person like me to buy gems.

The OP seemed to feel GW2 is moving further away from the average gamer, and focus the game purely for whales and new gamers.

You obviously have your own personal feeling about the game.

I think someone mentioned already. Majority of people tried GW2 didn’t get very far before they quit the game. You can see that from the AP leader boards.

So, it’s not surprising Anet are doing many tweaks to make sure new players play as long as possible, even silly pointless tweaks like making changes to the downed states.

I think some one mentioned in another post, and I also mentioned a few times: majority of new players didn’t get very far into the game. You can easily see by the AP leader board, a huge percent of the player base basically never played more than a few hours.

So it make sense Anet is trying to place focus on new players trying to retain them.

And OP is totally right, many of their changes are related on pushing people to buy gems. Im’ not sure why that is surprising.

Yes, there are people who are happy with the game, and they’re all playing the game quietly. Forums account for a small minority of the player base in any game.

You almost make it seem as if it’s not so important because it’s a minority but that’s of course not true. Sure the people on the forums are a minority, it are the people willing to share idea’s, suggestions and dislikes about the game. That does however not mean that all people not on the forums are happy including those playing (as proven by the forums because people who have complains in the forum are likely playing so even that is not a good indicator).Player base is more an indicator for the longer term (2 to 3 years).

I kind of agree with him. Most people dont’ like the game already quit the game. The majority of people are either playing the game already or quit the game already.

I think most of my guildmates are quite happy. Because those that dont’ like the game, never logged on and get kicked out of the guild.

The final thing is this China release that everyone’s talking about…
Its good that time went into developing the Chinese version. Its great that it wasn’t just some copy and paste job, and new features were made so the game was easier to understand for them. Its amazing that as many copies were sold in China as Guild Wars 2 had in its entire existence in North America and Europe. Its very not awesome that the Chinese development/release happened at the expense of Non-Chinese players, and that much asked for features/content, like actual expansions to the Professions (weapons and skills), or Precursor Crafting, either got postponed, or never happened to begin with, and instead, we’re playing catch up to China, even though we’ve been more loyal, and have been around longer.

They didn’t sell as much as NA/EU in China. They clarified the 4 million was probably an estimate of characters created.

We’d like to clarify recent news of GW2 China sales: it’s inaccurate, from a Chinese fansite, and they could be estimating characters.

They only sold (activated?) 1+ mil in China (only quoting the relevant part):

They gave some details about GW2 China during the conference call.
- over 1M activated copies

Okay then….guess I’m wrong about that part, but doesn’t that just make it worse that three million of us are playing catch up to the 1 million player minority because these things are ‘saved’ and ‘unreleased’ until the feature pack?

(was using IGN as reference, but IGN never updated their article. Checked Massively, and they did. Guess I know who’s more reliable now! also, I pretty much never read twitter or reddit posts.)

I don’t think this makes particular sense. Something that’s programmed into the china server can’t just be snapped into the US version of the game. It requires work and testing to get that stuff to work.

If it requires that much work and testing, then it means that each version has different code. Even if slightly different, that’s a bad thing. I really doubt that Anet was that foolish when it came to programming the China version, because it would mean that for now on, we either get half the features, or they have to work twice as hard to get the same features in each version. That’s not just foolish, that’s just plain dumb.

Right, but Anet dont’ have a choice. Foreign game studio can’t just go to China and release mmorpg there. They have to cooperate with other domestic china company by law.

Simply put, Anet really dont’ have full control on what goes on in China. Another company(publisher) is working with Anet to release GW2 in China. ANd since they are cooperating, some features might be included/excluded because the local publisher wanted it that way.

ANet, I need a goal.

I moved over to FF14 ARR a couple of months ago. The content they already have + add is just mind blowing. And then I dont mind paying a couple of bucks per month to gain that amount of content. I’ve played GW2 since beta but I stopped a month ago. I still check the forums on a regular basis to see what’s going on in the community and what kind of update’s the game gets. September feature pack disappointing as hell. I know it’s no CONTENT update, but still, it is an update, one of the few updates this game get’s, aside from the useless crap they call living story.

FF XIV was a complete disaster when it first came out. It took (about) 3 years to re-do the whole thing. So of course it will have all the niceties now.

pdavis, for what it’s worth, I’ve seen quite a lot of value in this thread over the past day. Reading through, it seems that a number of people are giving the OP’s question consideration and replying with both their own feelings and their thoughts on the general population’s mood and communication.

It’s nice to see so many players having a real discussion about the things that they both like and dislike, and I’m finding it personally helpful.

This actually does make me feel better. Thank you. I can understand the importance and value of such a discussion. I for one love this game. Ive brought my wife into it, and want to bring my son into it. (He’s only 2 so it’ll be awhile.) I love the game play, the art work, the friends ive made in my guild, the challenge of going after a legendary weapon, the story, all of it. Its very well done. But I find it distressing to see so many people just bashing on it. I took this game and made it my own, and seeing it so denigrated so many times on the forums, almost feels like a personal attack. I dont get how you guys deal with it. All the hard work, time, and yourselves you’ve all poured into this amazing game, to see it so raged against and abused. I commend you. I would have done much worse in your shoes.

I can get why people feel a certain way, that they are not happy with the game and where its going. But comparing it to other games? Its like comparing the mona lisa to a salvador dhali. But are amazing and wonder pieces of art in their own right, but neither holds a candle to the other. Demanding changes while prophecying the games destruction if its not done? Seems a lot like threatening to burn down a steak house if they won’t start serving tofu. Calling the devs lazy/liars/incompetent because they wont add a feature you want? Its like calling those who built the pyramids lazy/incompetent because they didnt add in an elevator. Im not saying any of this was in the post, but the forums in general. If there is any portion of this game that I am unhappy about, its the forums.

Right but there is blatantly no update beside the LS and QoL improvement which mostly is cash shop related.

Dont’ get me wrong, I think the LS is well done, and I see lots of effort putting into it.

But the other parts of the game is pretty much ignored. Anet developer even said they ignore it. (because adding more to it will fraction player base).

So your upset and predicting the end of guild wars 2 as we know it becuase its not like other MMOs? Guild wars never set out to be like other mmos. Their vision was for something very different. I and MANY others enjoy it. Like the direction its going. And thing ANET is doing a wonderful job. Sure somethings could be fixed/added. But MMOs are a work in progress.

I grow tired of these threads. I dont know why I bother posting in them anymore. Much of it is based on anger/frustration/ignorance/whatever. Of course you do have the right to express your feelings about the game. But it mostly turns into a “white knight” vs “hater” argument that leads nowhere.

Right but do you think this type of post go on the Wow or FF14 forum that often.

Sure people on the other games complain too, but usually not about this topic.

Anet simply pushed too much effort on LS, and ignored many things other people want.

ya but the only reason Anet did it is because they thought it’ll boost Mini sales.

Take for example, gathering tools, most people already bought 1 or more gathering tools, I doubt some flashy mining animation will boost people to buy more than 1(at least most people wont’).

I think something like instruments, or maybe dance could boost sales if they make it account bound. But not necessary everything. You have to remember ANet is in it for the money. So somethings are better of not account bound so people’ll buy more than 1.

the open world is so easy I dont’ think those traits even matters.

for dungeon experience probably matters more than a few trait points.

I’ve been playing over a year, certain professions just plain need the traits to be less squishy. Tried to take an ele lvl 32 with lvl 30 rare gear through level 31 story Dredging up the Past. Could not get past the first 2 dredge. Tried many different tactics, high dmg then tried high survivability, endurance bar consistently empty where I couldn’t dodge any more and died anyway every time I tried it without fail. Simply put it’s just plain underpowered. Considering when GW2 first came out we were more or less promised we would be able to solo most if not all of the game if we wanted I feel really let down.

I don’t even know how many characters I have. Maybe 23 lvl80? probalby 16 of them finished map completion.

I dotn’ know how you can have so much problems. I could probably just autoattack and press 1 and get through all the map completion and personal story.

I think it is more of you need to read some strategy from the web. It is actually pretty easy if you know what to do.

Easy to say, near impossible to do. Read strategy? From who exactly, a player that knows just the same things I do and has more or less the same experience? Strategy is fine when you have the tools execute it, the experience/expertise and willing is not enough on it’s own. Taking that Ele into Dredging up the past was akin to being given 3 paperclips and told to build a car out of it. Doesn’t matter if you are a mechanic you still can’t do it with 3 paper clips.
No offence ofc, just sayin’. /shrug

So you are telling me you can’t kill 2 “normal” dredge(or is it veteran).

you do realize most normal mob die in 2-3 hit if you maximize your dps.

Try maximizing your dps first, buy lvl32 strong green gear, put in ruby/rune or upgrade component that boost damage in every piece, use dagger dagger, and you can just spam 1 with fire and kill most of the things. (make sure you are close to the target though, else you’ll hit only once instead of 3 times with dagger 1 fire). If you are having trouble summon elemental, water is usually great because it can heal you, or fire/earth depend on situation. also you can use consumable. Usually damage boost consumable, or heal on kill or crit is also good.

There are also other trick such as getting 1 time use consumable. there is a healing seed which is useful early on. And you can also run to fire heart rise and buy the fire elemental powder. Eventhough those are on 30 minutes cooldown.

dont say its easy until you try it on that charachter/level, it is possible they forgot to nerf the enemies in certain story steps, or didnt bother because they were planning to release this current update with newly balanced personal story.

Dude I have 23 almost 24 level80. And I leveled a bunch of characters after the trait updates.

I think people simply dont’ know how to play. I have problem on my first elementist too, that is with traits.

But now on my third elementist, I’m having a much easier time without the traits.

That being said, elementist is pretty hard to level for beginners, and it’ll be “slightly” harder without traits.

Based on what i have read about from other games with cash shops, the majority of purchases to tend to be small amounts over time.

You might want to take a source at the report you are reading. What you said may be true for games like DDO or LOTRO. It is very untrue for asian f2p games.

I think certain cash shop games have an absurdly large amount of unlocks, don’t have a gem<→gold system, and dont’ have RNG chest. Those are the types of games that people generally spend small amount overtimes. It dont’ necessary apply to other types of cash shop games.

the open world is so easy I dont’ think those traits even matters.

for dungeon experience probably matters more than a few trait points.

It is actually pretty easy if you know what to do.

but I understand what you are going through. I have a hard time on my first elementist too, but when you are leveling your third elementist, it seemed pretty easy.

It feels as if I’m being robbed of an actual reward.

Maybe the GW2 staff felt they are robbed of their salary.

The foundation of GW2 is build upon those whales who will spend a lot of real cash so many players can play for free.

Else GW2 could just follow the subscription or freemium(VIP) model, many freebie player detest.

If there is a perfect game, you’ll be playing that game now instead of complaining on GW2 forum.

I’m certainly not 100% happy with GW2. But it is enough for me to still care about it.(at least more than the other games out now).

BLK farming even worth it now?

I think someone says they make about 12 gold during the double ticket events. Probably not that much now. You can farm the key first and wait to use the key when there’s a good event coming.

well, it’s called capitalism. That’s all I can say.

And GW2 is far larger than GW1 in terms of scope. So what works for GW1 wont’ necessary work for GW2. And even if it works, more profit is all the company cares.

What's the game's life span?

A very long time.

Unless NCSoft decide to shutdown GW2, it’ll be up for a very long time.

But the playerbase might not keep remaining large.

I didn’t buy GW2 to play a generic Facebook quality game

I dont’ think Anet owns you anything. If you bought the game for 30-60$. You got your money worth.

If you spend a whole lot of real money on the cashshop, and you regret doing it, it is your own fault.

I could honestly say most of my guildmates are still happy.

Those that are unhappy, already quit the game… And quite a bunch of them have quit the game.

Farm large amount of gold, to buy super expensive cosmetic items…

That sum up the endgame of GW2.

What determines the gem:gold exchange rate?

The basic is if many people buy gems and turn them into gold. Price go down. If many people use gold and buy gems, price go up.

That make sense because Anet dont’ want to give people too many gold for the gem so people’ll need to spend more real cash to buy gem. But at the same time, if gem price is too low, most people’ll find no need to spend real cash, they can just farm gold to buy gem.

Oh ya and Anet determine the price of gem, because they make the algorithm. The truth is whatever maximize GW2 sale is the gem price. If not, they should consider hire a different financial team.

is perma total make over still in bl chest?

Well it was alreafy high in the first place x.x

Anyway i just want some clarifications because back when it was available, i got 1 from opening 200chest, my friends also got 1 from opening around 200-400chests.

Then wiki said it was removed since august 12. But i saw another topic saying he got one and that topic is after august 12.

So i was wondering if i should get more keys to try and get one before sale ends ;s

ya it’s raining permanent hair license. 10 people in my guild got one. None of them opened more than 100 chest.

Must be some bug. That it is still in black lion chest after it is removed.

I have done map completion 4 times.
I have 2 legendaries.
I have full ascended gear.
I have done every dungeon path.
I have done every fractal.
I have done every jumping puzzle.
I have done every guild mission.
I have unlocked every mastery in wvw.
I have done every living story season 2 achievement.
I have rerolled a new character and unlocked all the traits manually.

Create and grow a guild. Make it as you want a guild to be
Organize Teq/3-H worm events with your guild
Explore the World with all 8 classes and each of the 5 races
Play PvP
Form a PvP Team
Play EotM
Command EotM
Play WvW
Command WvW
Create and grow a WvW Guild
Switch to a no so great WvW server, help to grow it

There are more things to do in GW2 than on your list.

The trend I see between whyt you’r done and what you’ve missing: Interact more with the community, that’s what an MMO is good for.

Done it all. Now what?

There is a Universe outside of Tyria. You can get a hobby outside of video games, or if you want there are other mmorpg out there you can play.

Unfortunately some one need to be paying real money to pay salary to the staff and make the investors happy.

If the gem price is too expensive, you can always pull out your credit card.

Magic Find... is it worth it?

The thing is it is not hard to raise magic find at all. Just place a bunch of buy orders on cheap blue and green everyday and salvage it. You probably even make money from it.

Even if you’re not gaining much, you won’t be investing much.
