In my experience, stealthing and moving laterally (while still stealthed), the enemy still targets and hits me with ranged attacks (not AOE) as if I was not stealthed at all.
I’ve tried but never really liked stealth.
use the stealth luke…
Stealth = Lock break = win
Is that a recent fix? Every time I’ve tried running stealth, i was still focus-fired while invisible.
I’ve been running a phantasm build forever, looking to try something new. I was thinking Scepter, Staff & Torch (never really used those). I’m seeing a lot of condition builds with those weapons, but they all have PU and stealth. I’ve tried but never really liked stealth.
Anyone got a non stealth build to share?
I knew that but I’m unfamiliar with TA haha. Up/up though… Is that easy? Or just stompable with a good group but that group skill curve makes a large large difference like in…. Say, AC?
TA does have a learning curve, but it’s not Arah. My last TA Up was me and another experienced guy plus three first-timers, and we cleared it without difficulty.
I use Sword/Sword & GS with a phantasm build.
I agree that we should have the option of storing coin in our bank.
I’ve also seen a serious drop in FPS with this patch, running an i7 960 and a GTX570.
#1. Fire and Generosity share a cool down (on-crit), Battle should be separate (on-swap)
Ferg does “the Little Engine That Could”really well, but that got really old months ago.
I run into A LOT of GS mesmers in WvW. I’ve never used GS myself. I find GS mesmers ring my “Ooo! Easy kill!” bell when I see them.
…
That is likely due to its popularity with new players. GS can be formidable in phantasm builds.
OP, you will be fine with Staff (assuming you do part).
Thanks guys, I’ll give those a try.
I’m not expecting awe-inspiring DPS, I just don’t want to be embarrassed to go out in public.
I never really “got” Warrior until after the last patch when I tried Hammer and Sword/Warhorn. I love the playstyle, but the DPS is just god awful. I run with a SB Ranger, who’s just running circles around me. I don’t expect miracles, but I imagine there’s got to be a build that will allow me to at least hold my own in open world PvE (no dungeons, no fractals). I’m currently working towards 0/0/20/20/30.
Can anyone suggest a build?
Thanks for the replays guys. Does anyone here have or use a naga hex?
I’ve had one for about a year and I love it. BUT, I had to send it back in May because it stopped mousing. They replaced it at no charge but just something to be aware of.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but LB Rangers seem to be coming out of the woodwork since the last patch.
I flirt with other professions, but when the going gets tough, I go Mesmer.
In the beginning, people played their glass cannon dungeon builds. Now people are shouting, “get PVT gear noob!” in map chat.
Reset on FC was good, but tonight it seemed I couldn’t go anywhere without running into a HoD zerg.
I use a TA GS and Bolt for my Sylvari.
Well this just sucks. Are there any consumables or food people use to circumvent our lack of mobility/swiftness?
For most people, it is Focus & Centaur runes, or just live with it.
I don’t know, I thought last night was the most roaming-friendly match in a long time. I spent it duo roaming on HoD.
I must confess that i always felt Focus was a little overrated, even more after the delay for Into The Void. I’ve tried it many times. Every time i trait for Focus and take it into sPvP, i spend the entire match wishing i had stuck with OH Sword. Many players much better than i use it though, so there must be something to it.
I believe it can happen if the target dodges, goes invulnerable or obstructed.
I need to check out Decoy again. I guess I always saw it as an escape move for when a fight was lost.
Also, what about Sig of Illusions?
I don’t actually “run” with no skill (I’m not “that” newb, LOL). I just haven’t settled on a skill. I’ve tried Sig of Insp, MoP, Decoy and pDisenchanter. Just none of them seemed “must-have”.
Here is what I am running now (as best I recall). Please be gentle, I am a long time WvW player who just recently took up sPvP.

The #9 skill is blank because I have yet to settle on one.
Seven Mirror posted a Sw/F & Sc/Sw build that i was having fun with before the last nerf.
Since the IC nerf, I’ve been using 10/30/0/30/0. It seemed fine at first, but I’ve started to have my doubts.
I was wondering what would be considered the typical the Phantasm Build for hot join sPvP.
I was not trying an exploit. The super and I were going toe-to-toe and both doing/receiving damage.
I’ve seen this often, but have always been too busy to ask.
Why is it that camp supervisors will often break contact, regen to full health and walk back into the center of the camp? I could understand it if I was trying to pull him away, but I’m not. He was still within attack range at the center of the camp, and I was getting damage numbers (although his health was pegged at 100%).
Calls for boycotts have never worked.
I’ve never heard anyone be happy about the randomized matchups. In T8, casual players have given up on WvW, and the more dedicated players are looking for other games to play.
I am in T8 and happy about the randomized matchups. Look at how much fun FC and ET had when we are stuck together, oh wait, FC got stomped while ET didn’t come out to play. Now another server can take the heat off of FC or ET. Much better system for T8 than there was before.
I meet new casual players each and every day. Players who say they have never really played in wvw before. They only play once in a while I have seen those very same people weeks later. So casual players have not given up on wvw.
Many of our most dedicated are burned out on wvw. Needing to put in 100% of your time to wvw and getting no visible returns is rough. Most people don’t pay for upgrades anymore. Only the dedicated few put in money now.
Your observations differ vastly from mine.
Fewer people buy upgrades because they realize there’s a pretty good chance that the objective will be lost before the upgrade is done. Same reason why people often empty the supply depot when they take an objective.

Trinkets on, but no armor ( level of defense on a zerker build/trait : zero ) and less damage obviously without runes of the scholar and zerker armor on.
/bow
Not much change here. Went from 10/30/0/25/5 to 10/30/0/30/0.
I use Zerker armor with Dolyak runes, half Knights & half Celestial trinkets, and one Knights weapon & one Valkyrie.
After this patch, I shelved my phantasm build and started trying different shatter builds. None performed as well for me as my phantasm build had. So I shifted the 5 points out of Illusions and went back to my phanstasm build. I noticed the longer cool downs, but the change turned out to be minor. As for the Blurred Frenzy nerf… Well, that is a topic for another thread.
I’ve been thinking “outside the box” and have come up with this build for Sword/Focus and Staff.
0/10/20/20/20 for:
Blade Training
Chaotic Dampening
Warden’s Feedback
Illusionary Elasticity
What do you guys think? Too “out there”?
Besides that, I would like to ask Rangers who use swords something that I haven’t been able to wrap my head around.
I always assumed Hornet’s Sting and Serpent’s Strike were cooldowns saved, either for Evasion or other situational purposes. Off-hand weapons, even with Off-Hand Training are generally 12s or more cooldowns. Therefore, the main source of DPS of a sword/x is the Slash-Kick-Pounce (“SKP”) chain attack (Skill #1).
Now, if you’re able to stay stationary and leave SKP on autocast, then I agree you can get really good mileage with the sword. However, in numerous fights, you are required to react to mechanics to survive. The common thread of wisdom I hear to overcome this is to “not spam #1”.
So my question is: if you’re not spamming SKP, how exactly are you attacking the mob/boss?
Thanks for the correction on the bleed stacks.
When I did the math long ago, the poison damage from sword 3 made it pretty competitive with sword autoattack DPS. You’re not losing much by hitting 3 every time it comes off cooldown, and since poison diminishes the effectiveness of healing it may even end up helping (reduced healing is equivalent to doing damage).
Sword 2 is obviously a DPS loss. However, it’s generally used to hop out of range of a big attack. So the tradeoff here is that you’re using a skill to evade rather than burning stamina for a dodge. i.e. if you weren’t losing the DPS due to sword 2, you’d be losing it from a dodge anyway.
Obviously it’s a bit different with SB since it’s a ranged weapon – you usually don’t have to dodge to avoid a big attack. However, the bow weapons can miss if the target moves, so they can lose DPS too. The more you abstract the analysis away from ideal test golem conditions, the more scenarios are possible. Most of those scenarios aren’t directly comparable either (how do you do a DPS tradeoff comparison of SB missing due to a target moving, vs. sword 2 taking you out of attack range for a bit?). And you can make it even more complicated by adding additional enemies – now you’re firing the bow at range, but there’s still someone meleeing you so you need to occasionally dodge/evade.
So it’s more a matter of knowing/learning what each weapon is capable of, then applying the proper weapon and proper weapon skill in the proper situation. Most people who run with sword/x will use a ranged weapon (bow or axe) as their secondary, and swap between them as the situation warrants. If an opportunity for melee damage presents itself, use the sword. If melee is too risky, use the ranged weapon. Sword/dagger + greatsword seems to be popular too as combined they have a ton of evades, making it a very strong defensive combo.
Also auto attack puts might on your pet
crit-tanker gear with traits give your pet perma-might with SB…. and best thing is, you get perma-might without being rooted.
The delay between attacks on SB is 0.51 sec, while sword autoattack is 1.8 sec for 3 attacks, or 0.6 sec. on average So yes the SB will give slightly more criticals than sword. But with a 100% critical rate it’d be just 17% more criticals. Or one extra might stack for your pet every 3.6 sec.
Also, the might given by the trait lasts just 1 sec. So best case with 100% critical rate you’ll only give the pet 1-2 stacks of might, usually 2.
The might given by sword autoattack’s Pounce lasts 5 sec. If you just leave yourself on sword autoattack, your pet will permanently have 2-3 stacks of might, usually 3. If you use the same trait and same 100% crit rate, this will go up to 4-5 stacks, usually 5.
Inanimate objects (like the door controller in CoF1) are another complicating factor to consider.
Whoops, I had Afflicted runes and Rampager’s amulet. After changing that, Sword pulled ahead by about 5%. Although Afflicted/Rampager’s SB was still about 2% ahead of the Valkyrie setup Sword.
I don’t PvP on my Ranger, so being kited is not a concern.
In PvE, i run 10/30/0/0/30 using zerker gear and Valkyrie trinkets. I know all the PvP weapons were without sigils, but i didn’t think to check my traits, runes or amulet. I’ll do that ASAP.
It’s a commonly held belief that the Sword does the most DPS. Yesterday, i was in the PvP lobby playing around with all the MH weapons and was surprised to see that the SB seemed to take down the target dummies faster (by almost 10%). That got me questioning the dominance of the Sword.
I agree, i can’t remember the last time i saw a Mesmer using Scepter.
OP, any chance of getting your vids unlocked for mobile?
Thank you very much!
Yes that is quite annoying.
New players often miss loot bags. Hold down CTRL and they will be marked.
Yes, this bug is a real pain.
It wasn’t in the patch notes, so I assume it’s a bug, but the dots on the map to show party members have changed. They used to be bigger blue dots, just like in PvE, while now they are green like other friendlies.
Any thoughts on this for CoE? The “Capture the Infinity Coil” event appears to show Success even when the dungeon is contested. I then went and checked prior events, and they showed “Active”. Seems like the only option is to start at the beginning and check every event in the chain.
I agree the troll seems out of place relative to the rest of the dungeon.
