Oh, and for the record, Guild Wars: Prophecies was amazing at release IMO. Since it wasn’t really an MMO, it was an Action/RPG, with online capabilities. And for Action/RPG games for PC gamers in 2005, compare it with Fable: The Lost Chapters.

False. Fable TLC is an offline console RPG. Guild Wars vanilla should be compared to Diablo 2. And in that light, GW1 got the short end of the stick.
It did become brilliant after factions and especially with Nightfall, but for all the good things in Vanilla GW1, it was a short and relatively bland PVE game.

Poll: Would you use your BL Chests if...

I actually want to use chests. Before launch I defended them in that they should always give more than 125 gems in items, but since it’s a gamble you may get stuff that isn’t directly useful.
There is already nice stuff in there, but the balance isn’t nearly where it should be. Dropping keys under the psychological barrier of 100gems would help big time. Either make them cost 80gems or severely buff items inside. And cut drop rate on tonics, no one cares.

Thing is, since keys drop from chests, they’re actually already pretty profitable but the initial cost is just too high.

Let Players Vote For Updates

Guild Wars has always been a game brand that listens to its player base. Why not take it a step further. Let players decide what they want you guys working on.

After you log in the game, just have a simple check box with four or five options and let active players vote for which content updates they want to see brought into the game over the next month or two.

Listen to does not mean cater to. You can rest assured that most threads are read by someone in the office. Arena.net has a very clear of what the players want. Not always does that equal what the game needs. Unpopular decisions are sometimes necessary to make a healthy game.

A.net made a lot of decisions I did not agree to in GW1. Sometimes it took months or years for me to realize why a particular unpopular decision was made, and how it positively affected the game.

It took half a year for GW1 to get its first content patch. It was only with factions that longevity content was added. Prophecies, good as it was, could be completed in 3 days and was a pvp game afterwards. PVE was fundamentally boring at launch.

So while I love how GW1 is a “complete” game, I do have the realistic expectations that it could take about a year before GW2 crystallizes into that same perfect spot.

Furthermore GW1 didn’t become perfect overnight. It was many, many incremental improvements that eventually led to the insanely good game it is right now. Factions introduced titles, which was proper end game. Nightfall introduced heroes which gave a dying game another chance. EotN gave hall of monuments which were achievements. Afterwards it’s easy to say that GW1 is a better game, it’s even more easy to forget how crappy it was at launch.

Better yet, Anet should purchase or partner up with GW2LFG.com and incorporate their menu into the game. It is idle, since you don’t have to mess with it and people will see it no matter where you go. Cities are empty already, just a bunch of ppl dancing holding costume brawls and talking conspiracies. Go to hoelbrak and try finding someone who isn’t below level 20.

I’m not saying your idea is bad, but I don’t think adding a twitteresque chat posting system in game would be the most resourceful thing they could do when they could just as likely add an auto pairing system. Auto pair (auto queue) would be a lot faster.

Faster does not equal better. GW2LFG trumps the WoW dungeon finder in all respects. It is a good thing if peopel are required to put effort into joining a dungeon, even if it’s as small as going to gw2lfg.com.

I personally would’ve changed Gift of Mastery to have Gift of Dungeons instead of Gift of Jumping.

You mean replace the T6 junk in Gifts of Might and Magic by the 8 dungeon gifts? That’s a nice idea imho. As far as the Gift of Jumping goes, badges should only drop from players, should drop more often and should be added to inventory automatically.

Buying "The End Game."

marnick.4305

You can buy and sell the end-game cosmetics of GW1, too, and yet no one complained about that. It’s curious that buying and selling the end-game cosmetics of GW2 has people in such a frenzy.

That said, it is not zero-effort to buy a legendary, either with real money via gems converted to gold or via in-game money earned as gold by any means. 1200+ gold is no small sum, and in gems that would cost $1056 US to buy outright. If someone is willing to pay an entire paycheck to ANet in order to have the gems to convert to gold to buy their legendary, then more power to them. That is a lot of real life work converted into gold, which is ultimately no less life investment than farming it all in-game. There is no zero-effort here; it’s a ton of effort no matter how you slice the cake.

To add to that my handful of copper.
1/ yes, in GW1 the end game was exactly the same. Buy ecto and shards from the trader and do 3 easy quests to unlock the crafter. Yet is was considered the most prestige armor in the game.

2/ $1000 dollars is barely 800 euros, not even a third of a normal paycheck or about minimum wage for a cleaning lady. But still a big amount to spend on a video game. Be my guest Someone has to pay the bills in Seattle.

I do think people should stop talking about third party sellers. Those who do are banned with their new shiny. Irrelevant for the discussion.

Game pace drop around mid-levels

in Suggestions

marnick.4305

Several reasons. If you did crafting before lvl30 you get an unnatural boost which drops afterwards. Second, until you have your elite, there’s always something to go for which pushes you. With no unlocks pushing you, levelling becomes slow. Third, around 40 I started completing a few lower level zones on my main … they do give lower xp. After 60 you get the push to 80 which is enough to blast you through the last few levels. Lastly, at 40 the Trahearne story-arc starts which was rushed. Without a story to boost your XP big time, it’s only normal your levelling speed drops.

My advice …
- save up crafting until shortly after 30. You will want it.
- Start eating some XP food after lvl 40.
- Have a crafted set ready for every 5 levels so you have intermediary goals. My guardian was always slightly ahead with armorsmithing so at 55 his lvl 60 set is already in the bank. That gives enough drive to push.
- Map completion also gives intermediary goals resulting in big xp.

If that’s not enough, only start doing your personal story at 40. It gives a ton of XP and will blast you through several more boring levels.

Elektohund- yeah i meant monthly and ive never done Hotw to know how bad that is. But the main point of this is to allow dungeon to gain maybe an even ammount of love and stuff so that people can then suggest feed back etc so that dev. can see where they have gone wrong in a particular dungeon.

HotW is very easy. Just takes quite some time and half a brain. If you lack either, you won’t complete it. All bosses are of the spank and spank variety. Barely no tactics and high HP. Furthermore p2 and p3 end with underwater bosses which are even more easy with even more HP.

I do support your point though. Specific dungeons could be part of the rotation. If at any day far less people complete the daily, it surely shows a severe problem with the particular dungeon.

Guild Wars 2 on Playstation 4?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

It shouldn’t be on consoles because of several key issues.
- fracturing the playerbase. Nextbox and PS4 require a dedicated network.

- You have to pay Sony/Microsoft to deploy patches. Given the amount of updates any MMO requires, the console versions usually don’t get any.

- Too many hardware architectures. Optimizing for PC is already difficult enough. No need to get funky console hardware. Cell, while powerful, was a development nightmare. The Xbox360 with its shared memory wasn’t that much better.

- Development requirements regarding the OS. On xbox you are required to make playlists. On PS4 you are required to make trophies (and only trophies). That’d mean scrapping achievements for the PS4 version. I don’t think Arena.net needs even more people to dictate their terms.

There is a reason exclusives are the best games. As an oldtime xbox360 fanboy I’d much rather have a ps3 exclusive than a bad multi-plat title like GTA4. But that’s merely my observation. If you want an underpatched, non-supported version of GW2 on the PS4 … be my guest to promote that.

PS4 is pretty much straight PC on the inside now (again…read the PS4 specs in the first link on my OP…also nextbox is not confirmed but rumored to have AMD components as well)…porting wont be an issue.

It will still be an issue. Specs on paper are worth the value of the paper burned in a furnace. Specs in the real world are the only thing that matters, and for consoles that’s often not nearly as good as it sounds.

Playstation network links with PC gaming networks and server….iirc its Xbox live that has the closed network

Both have their fair share of limitations. If a.net can cope with that without compromising the PC game … sure why not. But past experience with flopped multi-plats shows that it’s pretty much impossible.

It is funny how perception changes so fast once the sheeple realize raw damage isn’t necessarily the most important thing. One youtube video showing a successful all-engi speedrun is all needed to fill gw2lfg.com with “lf2m engis only”.

What exactly is an exploit?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Any exploit that’s a “Jumping Puzzle” and doesn’t specifically bug out is legit in my books. As such I consider the mountain jump in CM legit. Skipping the fire in AC is legit. Standing on top of the ruin so Howling King in AC doesn’t hit you is an exploit.

Legit in your books isn’t legit in ours. The mountain jumping is an exploit since we don’t intend for you to be able to go up there, and it allows you to skip through the natural progression of content we made.
The drakeheads in AC were intentionally made with a cute little workaround, if that’s the other you are implying is okay. I hope that is the issue you are talking about at least, since there isn’t a whole lot of fire in AC.

I do realize that my books aren’t the standard but my books are based on my experiences with the game. The players are trained with jumping puzzles from the get go. Arena.net created a skillset within the playerbase that is beyond what’s legal in other games. The dividing line can’t be as arbitrary as “this is intended” and “this isn’t”.

I did mean those drake heads and I had no idea whether or not that little jump was legal. By your definition, the drake heads could be considered part of the dungeon progression. By the same vein, jumping on top of the mountain may have been an intended rock puzzle. There is absolutely no way to find out for sure. If you want to divide legal jumping tricks from illegal ones, you need to define limits that can’t be discussed.

You are not giving us a clear way to know. If you make a statement, it should be non-debatable. Your current definition is clear as mud. And that’s why I stick to “don’t kill it when it can’t damage you” as a solid rule until a better one is presented.

Are mystic clovers profitable?

in Black Lion Trading Co

When going through the materials the mystic clovers can potentially yield, I can’t shake the feeling the recipe is inherently profitable as long as the clovers themselves are a wished result. Virtually all alternative outcomes are a net profit.

The T6 are needed for Gifts of Might and Magic. Other materials are needed for other parts of the legendary. If my hunch is right, that’d mean gambling clovers makes the legendary cheaper, after all, a penny saved is a penny earned.

My temporary conclusion is that Mystic Clovers are a pita in so far that they are RNG based. Objectively though, as a gamble, every potential outcome is a win like a slots machine that gives back at least your initial quarter.

Level cap increase past 80? Y/N

You will launch expansions where we start at endgame???

I can’t understand. I supose leveling system is useless AT ALL. We all should start as level 80, there is no point anymore, no objective.

I wonder what is expansions all about, new areas? lol, new story? lol.
Without level cap, without any more items type or better items… Future expansions can’t be more than a new story and some new maps.

Isn’t that a good thing in and of itself. I’ll pay for the story and maps like I did in GW1. There’s no reason to presume that levels are a requirement for those.

YOU GUYS must understand that if there is new maps, new items, new things, the market will change anyways, with or without higher level cap.

Entirely correct. In GW1, expansion meant the prices of rubies, sapphires and obyx shifted big time. Even lower tier materials got new purposes which made them hugely desirable. So while the market changes, the stat cap doesn’t. Fresh winds don’t have to be destructive for old content.

Gems are always bought from other players, who put them in the system in the first place. By putting a cap on the sale price, supply will eventually dry up and the gold>gem system will die a sudden death.

You’re counting from the perspective of gold which is fundamentally wrong. Gems are only coupled to real money. The conversion is based on market price.

PS: I’m waiting until I get 2gp/100gems before I sell my supply.

if prices go up even more, it will become much less appealing to buy things from the gem store.

On the contrary. People will be MORE inclined to actually go out and buy the gems with real money.

Lol, european people are getting poorer at a rapid rate thanks to incompetent politicians. Only a small percentage is profiting from EU. So I doubt there is a major purchasing power difference between US and EU.

You haven’t been to the EU right? I’ve been to the states several times. We are far richer than US residents. I would wager a factor x2 for entry level jobs. I am 27 and have full social security, healthcare benefits and three retirement plans, pay for an unemployed partner and the theoretical disposable income to hire a full time servant if I wish so. I’m still at relatively low income level.

However this is also the reason we are in economic trouble. We have to accept losing some of our wealth in order to not lose all. Not everyone is prepared to give up 5% of their large wealth to save our economy.

Kudos for having a good job.

Anti-kudos for writing what you wrote and ignoring millions of unemployed, whole countries going kinda down the drain (idk Greece), whole countries that have average pay 500-600 EUR/month and so on and so forth.

Apart from Greece those countries don’t exist in Europe. In Belgium there’s 7% unemployment and they do get 1000 euros every single month. Apart from Germany, minimum wage is at least 900 euros across the board, higher in many countries. Don’t make false statements.

Sure, a lvl 80 is faster due to higher stats, that’s not debatable but honestly … I don’t care about fast. I care about fun. Lower level people tend to be a bit more fun. Whether twinks or newbies, I feel pretty good about helping other people.

Awesome cities, mostly abandoned because all the action is in LA

Mystic forge in all the cities. <3 Dungeon Vendors. <3 One free cultural teleport stone (Like the hall of monuments one) that takes you back to the city of your race. <3 Do want! xD

The problem is that LA has everything. And that problem has a reason, because, as a developer, you simply know people will find the place with all the necessary facilities.
- crafting
- bank
- TP
- free portals
- WvW
- MF
- Jumping puzzles (which no other city has)
- dungeon/laurel vendors

In LA you simply have everything you need. For most players, that’s a boon.

I’ve been pretty vocal about my life on these forums thus far. I have a good job, wonderful soon-to-be-wife and an active social life involving triathlons. However since my early youth videogames have been my primary hobby, and they still are. RPGs and especially MMORPGs are my favourite genre by far. My only gripe with this genre is the amount of time the require to do meaningful play.

What I love most about GW2 is how the game is catered to time limited players. After doing all the chores, my fiancé watches her soap series daily, and in that 20 minute frame I can get my own dailies done. By doing so I can meaningfully progress in this game. Comparing to other MMO games where a 2-3 hour time slot is the minimum requirement for meaningful play, I love how 20 minutes is enough in GW2.

Secondly, the game scales well. Some days I obviously have more time, and doing either explorables or FotM allows me to scale up the rewards depending on free time I have at hand.

1,800 Gems to change server...

Why is it £20? How is that logical in any respect. With my current work scheme that is 7 hours of work to change server. It barely costs anything to do it, so why is the pricing so high?

That would be around 2,80 euros for a single hour of work? I call bluff.

Are Ascended Items still a thing?

While ascended gear has some benefits you should not forget some of the drawbacks:
- it is far less flexible because you don’t have a choice in gems
- it is far less flexible because it lacks several stats
In a game that’s skill based, flexibility trumps raw numbers in many cases. Given that +healing ascended does not exist means that several builds become worse with ascended.

That being said, I don’t think it was the good way to implement a new tier. It is getting easier though and new items are released at a very slow pace. I’m still on the edge but inclining towards positive if and only if this is the only new tier to be released and no new levels.

+5 AR is free with a handful of tokens. The +5 power, which can be safely neglected, is the progression stat. By making the stat both small and extremely expensive, it is nothing more than an kitten item. Furthermore, more than 5AR is never needed by most people.

For 99% of people this recipe can be safely ignored.

However this is exactly the case in almost every other online game. Players always find each other and flock to the biggest place. That way a lfg or wts has the most effect.

The only way to pull people to other cities is to make events happen there. But even then … only the city with the most profitable events will have any players.

I would recommend gilded infusion. Long term gold increase > short term gold gain.

After that, it depends on your wish to gamble.
- lodestone promotion is the sure way to create 27s
- heavy crafting bags are also a good way to create gold
- equipment boxes are a gamble
- green crafting tools are free compared to orichalcum picks.

- An acknowledgment of an issue is not the same thing as declaring in the very title of their thread that it is a “perceived” issue to some. Quite a large difference there.
- They closed the existing thread, with all it’s pertinent information and reports, and reopened it as vaguely directed call for more information on an issue they did not directly admit even existed, without providing any concrete, methodical means or tools for people to utilise to steer the ‘investigation’ in any meaningful direction.
- Simply declaring it an ‘X-Files’ level conspiracy, with all the inherent derisive intent that implies, was enough to clearly outline the seriousness with which they were undertaking their endeavours.
And finally, you stated that they created another sticky post to say “Hey, we were wrong. There is a problem. Sorry about that.”
It is the clear lack of an apology that is the issue here, and it is fast becoming the hallmark of any red post.
After such a protracted and heated topic is brought to any form of conclusion by them, it is the very least they could do.
All this rallying of defense around the developers, to the resounding mantra of “entitled whiner”, serves one purpose only, and that is to further derail the issue from it’s origins, which are sadly now sinking to the bottom of the forum pits.
You have to hand it to the Nexon insertion, and their ability to manipulate the blockheads. They really do know their stuff.

You have a right to your opinion. I have a right to call it wrong. Not only that but the post you quoted proved you were wrong factually so your opinion simply doesn’t hold any weight anymore. A.net did the right thing here. If you want to stick it to Nexon, that’s conspiracy level again but I can’t support that stupid allegation.

Extremely complex loot issue gets finally resolved. Player is still not thankful but goes even deeper into the conspiracy nonsense. Entitlement much?

At least a.net fixes these things. Complex issues take time. Really … what a stupid thread this is.

I can’t believe you went there… you obviously don’t know what they’re capable of. Tell me, have you actually seen something fixed in this game, without breaking something else (sometimes completely unlrelated) in the process? This is Anet’s infamy. Most times they’ll overlook game mechanics that desperately need fixing as well, only to release sparkly lemon-fresh new content.

If those issues only affect a small minority, I would delay those issues too in favor of fixing things that affect the majority of people playing the game. It’s called priorities. Doesn’t mean no one works on the minor issues you perceive as important.

Also it’s far from conspiracy, but you obviously side with and take the word of Señor Johanson, blithely overlooking the facts. Trust me it’s not resolved yet.

See what happens when the update is implemented – then engage brain and put mouth into gear.

I’ll take you up to that challenge but I expect you to do exactly the same.

After everything that has been thrown into this topic by so many people, I think you owe us a little more than this, Colin.

What’s a good form of recompense, I wonder…. hmmm…

This post/topic starter gets a massive +1 from me, and probably one of the best +1 candidates this forum has seen. Well done.

A ban for trolling? A suspense for being entitled? Plenty of good responses I could think of.

Not too shabby, Marnick – two posts, two appearances of the tiresomely popular ‘entitlement’ dribble. Oh how much IGN has to answer for, birthing that monstrously idiotic catch-phrase.
I did love the ‘suspense for being entitled’, though. Quite the best oddly-relevant typo I’ve seen for a while.
I laughed until I stopped.

One should always call things by their name. If a thread is full of entitlement, one shouldn’t be ashamed of calling it exactly what it is. If you want to make that my third entitlement quote in this thread, so be it. Doesn’t make the OP any less entitled.
