Or you could just take your time. All of the items are easy to get unless you try to grind them out. Only then do they become a pita. Take it slow. Enjoy the game.

Even if they stopped developing right now, it would take me years to get all the stuff I want. How anyone could complain about that is beyond me.

He does cover all the bases, or most of them, I’ll give him that. Sometimes I find it hard to find ways to briefly summarize what makes Guild Wars 2 so good, in a way that doesn’t make me sound like a raving fanboy or involve a 10 minute lecture.

Impossible. When talking about something that’s genuinely good, it is extremely difficult to not sound like a fanboy. I’ve seen reviews start with the opening comment that they had to rewrite the piece three times in order to not come across as a fanboy. GW2 is just that good.

+ all stats has a larger total of stats than focussing on 2 stats. You will be a jack of all trades. If you want to make a tanky damage dealer, it is (imho) the best combination. You will have overall lower numbers but perfect play will have you do more damage because your uptime is higher than a glass cannon (who does 0% damage while dead, and glass cannons are dead a lot)

I got six precursors so far and will start working towards my my third legendary weapon. Twilight and Bolt for now. I really dont get the problem.

If you do things right, you dont even have to farm, but play the game, while the TP works for you. With a minimal daily effort you can get 20-30g a day from TP and add your ingame drops ontop of that. Whoever goes to orr to farm hours of DE for money has to rethink this boring method of waisting time. If you go there once in a while to farm T6 mats its fully enough.

@duskprice: if there werent people willing and/or able to pay 700g for a precursor, the price would skyrocket into the ground.

Things working fine, ANet. Please dont change anything.

As for casual gamers with 5-10 hours online each week: well, you are not missing anything by not having that weapon. A hobby physicist wont get published in Nature neither.

While I agree with your post in spirit, I do find it funny how you manage to compare a top job requiring vast intelligence to a mere videogame.

There are real problems. Any issue I think I have with the current system are entirely relevant to a large player base.

No. Most people shouldn’t have a problem with the current system if they use the insides of their skull.

If you’re tech illiterate I understand why you don’t agree with the EU/US split. However that’s a technical issue that’s virtually impossible to solve.

In case you didn’t know, the entire internet runs through a system of trans atlantic trunk lines. These are the most laggy connections imaginable and completely unsuitable for MMO play. That’s why serious MMOs restrict intercontinental play.

I thought the whole point of letting people “cheat” by buying gold with real money was that the rest of us legit players would benefit from them developing the game with that money. I cant accept a game that lest people get ahead by paying with real money AND want me to spend real money to play the content. Thats not going to work for me, good luck to Anet with that one.

World Transfer Too Expensive?

I am going to list all the flaws in the original post.

1/ For PVE players, choice of server doesn’t matter due to free guesting.

2/ Gold price isn’t relevant for gem transactions. Being able to buy transfers with gold is an option not present in other MMOs.

3/ Except for high pop servers, the transfer cost is cheaper than any other MMO.

4/ Not only that, but it is an account transfer, in comparison to a character travel in other MMO games

5/ It is only relevant for WvW players and primarily a system to balance servers.
5.1/ as such the only possible improvement would be to make transfer to low pop servers free.

There is no real problem. Any issues you think you have with the current system are entirely imaginary.

That’s the point. A.net is slowly adding more long term goals to the game.

Ascended amu (30) + infusion (20) + cat (100) is the minimum number of laurels many people want to use and the form of progression laurels seem to imply. That implies 150 laurels or at least 3 months of keeping the game alive not counting other things in the laurel vendor.

What to do in GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

I’ll agree it’s nice to never fall behind, but if there are no goals left for you to achieve other than purely cosmetic stuff with the exact same stats, why go the extra mile?

Ask that to all the people who got obby armor or GWAMM in GW1. Ask it the McTiggers, 5 accounts with obby armor and GWAMM each.

I guess it comes down to what you think is the lesser of two evils. A gear grind, or lack of content.

There’s plenty of content in this game, but you refuse to play it because you focus on the lack of gear grind. The game is chock full of content that adds more depth to Tyria than any other fantasy realm I’ve played in.

In Real Life I wear tailor fit shirts with custom embroidery. They look better, are far more expensive but overall do not give any tangible “stat” bonuses. Sure they’re a bit more comfortable. Sure I’m more noticeable at work. But the work I do is what counts and the shirt doesn’t change that one bit.
Some people like to drive a BMW or Mercedes, but again, those do not confer a real improvement since they’re still legally bound to the speed limit. Expensive stuff is a goal of its own right.

To most people, cosmetics are a far more effective push to play than any form of gear grind. And since cosmetics don’t degenerate with consecutive patches, they are a far more lasting goal to reach. I’d much rather farm a year for a legendary that sticks, than a week for a weapon that gets patched out next expansion.

What to do in GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

It is whatever you want to do. Unlike other MMOs, there is nothing pushing you to do stuff. You don’t have that feeling that you have to log in or else you will be behind everyone if you are not grinding and farming everything. With GW2, you get to do whatever you want to do without feeling left behind or like you have to play it.

Bolded is both good and bad. At level cap, mostly bad.

Correction. Bolded party is mostly good at level cap. At least in this game you can beat the stat grind. Any further achievement and/or legendary acquirement is entirely optional.

As such, the game invites you to do whatever you like most. And if you don’t like to play until the next patch, no one will run away from you like in other MMO games where missing two patches means you’re ten tiers behind.

The endgame, help me find it

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Endgame in almost every game, for example chess, means there’s only a few pieces left and winning/drawing is usually trivial. It is the point where it is customary to give up (if you’re losing) or propose a draw, and set up a new board. In endgame it is actually rude to keep playing unless it’s something like Knight/Rook vs Rook/Bishop.

In most MMOs, endgame is the point where you realize you can’t beat the game, keep playing at nauseam until you’re so lobotomized you quit the game outright in disgust.

GW2 has a chesslike endgame. When you finish the game, maybe it’s time to set up the board again (alt). Dragging out a game that’s been won is pointless.

Hey,

So this was a bit of a bother due to economic concerns, but I crept in there just in time for the wipe.

Method was Entropy, for which 1.95 million items had to be salvaged.

For anyone bothered by this, the Devs have confirmed that all points related to Entropy will be wiped prior to the implementation of the new achievement system.

Thanks to all the well wishers.

If I understand you correctly, you’re more of a devil’s advocate, trying to prove how the current system is fundamentally broken. At least, that’s what I got out of your previous threads.
If so, I applaud your efforts in getting completely worthless achievement points, to show how the system as a whole is broken. In the end, your 25k wipe will result in my 3k achievement points being worth a lot more. Your sacrifice will give everyone a functioning achievement system.

Thanks for that in advance. Sincerely and without sarcasm.

Are hardcore players this games worst enemy?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

It is not possible to be good at videogames with less than 12 hours per day.

You can’t be serious here, right?

Back when I was raiding in WoW, 4 nights a week for 4 hours, and we were number one guild on our server clearing all the heroic raid content, it was still 16 hours… per week. Add to this the same amount to farm for materials for food, enchants and gold, and you get to 32 hours per week, which is like 4:40 hours per day. The non-raid stuff was mostly done during week ends too.

Playing well and playing hardcore as in 8+ hours a day is something totally different. People who play well don’t need to play hardcore.

Excuse me the obvious hyperbole. But still, the best in videogames are the ones who spend the most time ingame. The question is simply how they influence people who spend less time. Whether you spend 4 hours a day or 12 doesn’t change the fact that it is an extreme amount of time to spend behind a screen.

Playing an average of 4:40 hours per day is beyond hardcore. Having an average of 4:40 hours per day behind your screen is not compatible with having a life. Normal people would be happy to log in for 2 hours, 3 times a week. Even that could be a stretch at times, so people like me fill that gap with gems.

Let’s be very clear here. To me, anyone who manages to spend more than 2 hours a day on a videogame consistently, is making a hardcore time commitment. Even more so if you’re spending the weekends behind your monitor instead of with loved ones. I don’t really mind, as long as you don’t mind me matching your time with gems. I will get my Quip eventually. I won’t farm all the gold for it.

Videogames isn’t the only thing I cut back on in order to have a real life. I do triathlons, but I refuse to do the Ironman distance since it requires 6 hours of training a day. Impossible. I’m happy my Ironman friends don’t look down on me for making that choice. I only wish the same choice could be made in MMOs. Lucky for me, in GW2 I can.

PTR and why it should be a thing

in Suggestions

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

There are plenty of reasons to not have a PTR.

1/ PTR is primarily about testing out new, max level characters. Most of the test server load has nothing to do with testing.
2/ people finding bugs do so to exploit them in the live game. Exploits are found, kept hidden and then used for either world firsts or massive gold gains.
3/ Yet another part only wants practice in the new content, again so they have a head start in the live game by having the correct materials already in their bank.

In the end, it costs a lot, and achieves virtually nothing but grief.

Lastly … GW2 does have a test realm. It’s just not public. It is a public secret to not talk about the alpha server…

Are hardcore players this games worst enemy?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Hardcore gamers are any game’s worst enemy for several reasons:

- hardcore gamers are a minority by default. It is not possible to be good at videogames with less than 12 hours per day. For 80% of people that’s impossible to reach (given current unemployment figures).

-> hardcore gamers usually don’t pay for microtransactions and gems while casual gamers do. There are two reasons for this:
—- Hardcore gamers feel that pay2win is a bad thing because it lessens the value of “work” they put into the game.
—- Casual gamers feel they want to invest in their hobby, and have the means to do so.

People with jobs often have pet projects such as an oldtimer kitcar, extensive collection of match boxes, an expensive race bike or a legendary weapon. Often these items are rarely if ever used to their fullest effect.

As such I strongly believe that casual gamers and hardcore gamers don’t mix well, simply because one group wants to spend money on things the other group considers despicable. It is as if Garry Kasparov would look down on 1100 ELO people who buy a crystal chess set for their living room.

This attitude only exists in MMOs and I don’t understand why we, as casual gamers, accept that.

There are three (3) ways to obtain the precursor. If you don’t like one you just pick another. Don’t like MF way? Buy one from TP or do the dragons and wish for luck.
I got a feeling that the problem is not the way of obtaining them but the difficulty of it. It’s hard and it supposed to be hard.
A lot people is saying that they refuse to get one because they don’t like provided way of getting one, even that they got enough money to buy one instantly. Fine for me but why they whine about it on the forum if they have made this kind of decision?

Finally ANet will provide us with another way of getting your desired precursor but I’ll bet anyone that when they do that people will still think is too hard and complain about it because all they want is simple solution.

I really hope they get expanded on one day, an update purely focused on improving underwater combat. One day. Until then we’re “stuck” with that green one.

It is comical though how the choice is obviously to either improve this content now, or later. Instead some people always ask to remove existing content. That’s not a proper solution.

After reading many complaints about sales on this website, I am just going to state the primary rule for spending gems. This rule is also painfully obvious so I wonder how so many people seem to have problems figuring it out but ye …

Rule #1: Wait for sales

Two subrules to optimize this rule:
Rule #1.1: Everything goes on sale sooner rather than later
Rule #1.2: Keep a healthy supply of gems to take advantage of sales.

The only advantage being, you don’t know when something will be on sale. If you can’t wait, you should accept the possibility that a sale for this particular item starts the next week.

As Warrior, Guardian or Elementalist you’ll have it easy because they are very straightforward and people understand them with a glance. Mesmer requires skill but their unique utility is very, very good.

As an Engineer myself, I can’t really complain. My toon has tools for every situation. The difference is mostly that I actually have to change my bar every boss because engi isn’t about raw numbers.

I have the feeling necro and ranger are viable in their own right, but they are difficult to play right. As such they are (imho rightfully) ignored in PUGs. A guild will appreciate a good necro or ranger though.

RL automatically patches through evolution. However sometimes very annoying bugs never get fixed because they aren’t critical. That stupid nerve on your elbow … any dev with half a brain would have fixed that ages ago.

usually people with a female avatar are actually female.

nah. like other games, female avatar could be played by male. and male avatar could actually be female inside.

But not to the extent of which I see it happen in GW2 MMORPG: many men online role playing girls.

I love both GW2 and RL. It is sometimes hard to balance them. But RL is far more rewarding so I prefer RL. Did you know RL is M-rated for nudity, substance abuse, violence and cursing? Weird how so many kids get a hold of it. There are actually about 50% girls in RL, usually people with a female avatar are actually female.

The biggest difference is, in RL you have to work for rewards. In GW2 playing a game is enough.

Tough issues

In a game where you just hit each other until one falls, your math would be correct. However toughness makes that bosses hit you for less, which means your healing skill is proportionally far more effective. Since you’re not down nearly as often your damage is proportionally higher too.

A glass cannon often loses a third of his damage on downtime.

Bottomline … it depends. I personally wouldn’t go without at least some toughness or vitality because for all the power/precision, … a defeated player does zero damage.

The only reason zerker warriors are viable, is because they have the highest possible base health and armor. They need less defensive points to achieve the same effect

Focus.

I have less than 500 hours /played with part of that being afk. Everything I do is focused mainly on getting my legendary of choice. If I had 1000 hours played, I am 100% positive I would have had a legendary by now, probably even two.

I’m creeping towards my goal. While it is slow, I do know I will get there eventually. There’s only so many steps needed, but casual play can make these incrementally. Obsidian took me over a year to get.

7 Elder Dragons?

NO! We’ve been over this. Six gods aren’t the five dragons ….

Fire: Charizard
Ice: Jynx
Plant: Bulbasaur
Undead: Spook

Clearly the 6 Dragons are the 100 pokémon.

Next time I will explain why dragons, gods, pokémon and races are real life countries.

Gargoyles mysteriously vanish from Ascalon.

Their disappearence coincides with the release of the HoM calculator and the sudden need for stacks of granite

This actually sounds like a legit explanation, even though it breaks the fourth wall.

EDIT: Great Destroyer was killed in 1078 and Ministry of Purity was established in 1079. HoM and the Gargoyle genocide was before the rise of the Ministry. Even then, a genocide usually isn’t “mysteriously vanish”.

Gargoyles disappeared in 1185. Your theory is false.

Stealth Realm

As of yet, stealth can’t be countered. Either a starcraft-style ripple or this kind of shadow realm is desperately needed to add a counter effect to stealth.

IIRC gw1 rangers were supposed to get stealth but it was never implemented because it is a broken mechanic by default.

Do you get something after completing the optional level in Super Mario Bros? It is just for the feeling of personal accomplishment and a few vanity points (achievements). It is about going to a cool place.

Getting anything worthwile … If I don’t feel like doing much I just to Urmaug’s secret and Weynandt in LA. A few silver in greens is nice for not doing any combat.
