lol…agreed….having the best coverage is a definite advantage. Unfortunately the SoS of old seems to be no more and now is suffering from a lack of coverage. This, to me, seems to be the real issue. If SoS was a strong as they were, say 4 to 6 weeks ago, then the advantage JQ has in regards to coverage would have been mitigated to a large extend, which would have lead to closer scores for JQ, SoS and SoR – despite SoR not having as much coverage.

My observation is that SOS is suffering from tiredness and a lack of motivation and probably needs to drop to T2 to regain some motivation.

WvW won't become what we hoped it would

5. Game isn’t even close to a year old yet and it shipped with a pretty amazing WvWvW system. Does it have problems, absolutely but they already said they have a big patch in the works and will continue to improve the system.

6 months is sufficient time these days for an mmo to make these essential improvements, games like swtor didn’t even get that.

The issues that the OP is talking about like better grouping options, culling and progression and reward options should have been in the game when it launched. The games this mode is based on all had progression and reward options and better grouping, and culling is an issue that no game should ever have launched with.

Its pretty said that an overall inferior game like swtor launched with say far better and easier to use grouping and guild options than gw2

Loot Solo vs Group

Loot definitely improves a lot in a group for whatever reason. Personally I believe it makes no sense when in the open world doing dynamic events because the idea of these events is that you don’t have to formally group to do them together. Just another example of the contradictions in the game design.

Anet is probably aware of the market manipulation and just blatantly ignoring it. Having people defend anets claim that there is no market manipulation is an even bigger slap in the face. Free market isn’t so free?. inb4 people say this is what a free market is, this is a game.

Its never been a free market its manipulated by whatever mechanisms anet use for drop rates DR etc.

This ^^^ thread suggests time differences are the cause of loot drop issues, and when checking my time against server time, my computers clock is 5 seconds faster than the server time. Since my computer time is set by the apple asia time server I am going to assume my time is correct give or take a second for lag etc…

Isn’t the server time on Seattle time? If we’re in different time zones what does that mean?

Update to reduce culling has worsened in my experience

It was recently stated by the developers that the progress they have made towards getting rid of culling make them optimistic that they could possibly get rid of it by the end of the year.

By the end of the year!! Far far far too late. People are leaving the game now because of it. There’s posts in the WvW forum about severe declines in guild numbers because of people leaving.

winner moves up and loser moves down is a TERRIBLE idea. There are huge difference between most tiers and you’d just end up with massively unbalanced matches every single week.

When you accumulate or lose enough points you move up or down, whats the difference?

And you’re overstating the difference. As I said above the experience shows there isn’t that much difference between adjacent tiers.

In the proposed system a server that barely wins or barely loses will change tiers and then likely get dominated and dominate respectively. This results in extremely unbalanced matchups essentially every other week.

Experience has shown that this is largely not so. And besides if servers keep winning or losing they will go up or down eventually and the same issue will arise, with more static populations now it is unlikely that there would be a large change to the population in the meantime.

Now that the free server transfer madness is over with I think this system seems pretty legit. First place moves up one, second place stays in the tier, and third drops a tier. Is there a reason this isn’t how it is?

None that I can think of.

WvW Format and Burnout

I agree burnout happens especially from facing the same opponents over and over again. The reset plan would have fixed this although the other consequences were arguably too severe.

The answer to it has been proposed but it seems it will never be implemented ie. 1st moves up 3rd moves down.

This is contradictory. A more clear answer would be appreciated. Tonight I used my ranger to run the Teq event three times. Each time I went back to Lion’s Arch and sold up and banked and then logged in my 70+ necro to run around maps and do stuff. When Teq was back up, I logged in my ranger, paid the WP costs to Sparkfly and downed Teq. Twice I got a chest the last time I didn’t. I’ve played this game ALL DAY in any number of maps with 3 different toons. The one I play the best is the one I would naturally want to do dragons with. Your safety net catches the wrong players and yes, we’ll complain about it. I don’t care that I’ve gotten all blues, or maybe a green. I don’t care I haven’t seen an exotic drop off a dragon chest in over a month. I care that I didn’t get the chance. The chest should always appear. I did the work. Please get this resolved.

This raises an interesting point, its triggered by the activity attached to a character but is the DR then bound to your account on all toons? It seems ridiculous that if you’ve got multiple toons at lvl 80 why you can’t park some at dragons so long as you’re doing other events on other toons. Just another way DR screws with legitimate players.

This update has fixed this issue.

Just did this on level 10 and the complaint from earlier about doing this on level 10 with a group with no AR still seems to apply, we found it impossible with multiple overlapping red circles where even 1 was enough to 1 shot us.

People have been complaining about bad loot since day 1 of the fractals. It isn’t new, and generally I don’t bother to answer those questions since it is just RNG and speculation. Some people find a precursor in that chest, and others get blues. Just the nature of RNG whenever you open that chest.

I’ll ask around tomorrow to see if anything changed, but looking at it right now I see no changes to the fractal chest loot.

Yes but there should be a system that works in conjunction with RNG to enable players with bad luck to work to get the specific loot like you guys did with the introduction of pristine fractal relics. Anet should know by now how incredibly frustrating to players RNG on its own is.

I don’t think it will ever go away, because there’s always the potential for something to slip past us and enter the game. Not all players will abuse things, but the potential threat to the economy and the game is too high to go back to a system where a safety net is not in place. We saw the data from when it wasn’t in place and what things were like for CoF, and we simply can’t go back to a system open to exploit like it was before.

Yet other games do not use such measures which are clearly punishing regular players for playing the way THEY want rather than the approved anet way. Perhaps you should ask WHY players park their toons at dragon events and proceed from there rather than just instantly move to nerf which has become an anet habit.

As for protecting the economy, you mean the economy with runaway inflation where stuff like abyss dye costs over 22 gold. You’ll forgive me if I take that with a grain of salt.

Just noticed this in the dungeons sub forum from Robert Hrouda: “Since DR is a safety net system for exploits, we’re likely not going to announce when and how we made changes to it.”

I think its safe to say its gone far beyond being a safety net for exploits.

It’s been said by Anet in a recent post (I cant remember which) that the reason why it’s happening to dragon-chests is to curb exploits. I can imagine thats the whole reason for its addition to the game.

What exploits? So it is is deliberate well thats just a disgraceful response from arenanet.

What is a perfect economy though? The in game economy has runaway inflation.

I would’ve rather went with a reset and had the servers balance out quicker than deal with overpopulated sorrows furnace for another whole week at least in WvW. Yeah the next week might have been rough as well for us due to our low population but at least the servers might have balanced out a bit quicker.

So the reset should have been done purely because T8 is unbalanced? Cause looking at the matchup site the rest of the tiers are all stable therefore as has been stated there is no reason for the reset. SBI is perhaps the only server that is a tier too high but they’ve done just enough to stay in T4.

Not sure why so many are happy that they aren’t resetting the scores. Resetting the scores will achieve the same results, just in a much shorter time (ie, top servers that suck would fall down, and the better servers would rise to the top).

The objections have been that it won’t, which is obviously what anet’s analysis has also revealed. Tiers are close to being stable.

World v World: at a crossroads

Hey, you know those 8000 odd badges you had squirreled away on your condition necro and couldn’t use any of them to buy anything except for siege, well now they’re still the same but instead you can buy this other stuff with “Magic WvW Beans” (aka currency #24 in the game) that you can use to buy stuff, that you can actually use! How great is that?

Oh and sorry buddy, those 1200hrs you spent in wvw getting paid basically nothing but badges and Karma… well we don’t see that’s fair for new players that are part of the entitlement generation of gamers. They’re fairly special, so you’ll be starting from scratch because those kids need a ‘fair go’ at actually not having a veteran player deck them in 3 seconds because they’re running around in green/blue armour and never bothered to learn from their guild how to play in wvw and all run glass-specs.
So their ol uncle Anet is going to hold their hand… just that little bit longer.
You still get to spend your 2.4mil Karma though! On what that is actually useful we haven’t quite figured out, but we’ll let you know in another 3 months from now.

And you never will get to spend that karma, its pretty clear now that arenanet won’t introduce major new gear and have it be able to be bought with an old currency that a long term player has stored away. At best we will get some trinkets like the new karma jewellery.

I want decent enough crafting mat drops to enable me to craft my own items with a minimum of grind. To me the crafted items are the base items that should be available with a minimum of grind.

So, basically, you’re looking for an end-game challenge.

If the finish your Personal Story, the game rewards you with WvW blueprints (among other things). Seems like ANet is hinting that WvW is their idea of an end-game challenge, which is pretty darn reasonable.

I’m also disappointed at the lack of challenge the game is entailing for me. I feel the curve is wrong. Very hard at the beginning, with a lot of new concepts coming through, and then it stabilizes so all content has the same level of difficulty. Yesterday I participated in the Shatterer event and it went down in 5 minutes without any complication. Is this normal?

Yep the dragon events are essentially a cakewalk just there to get a chest.

Can we at least get some set information on who exactly we will be facing next week. Kinda hard to set up the server for the next match when we have no idea where to send people into which borderlands.

This is an impossible request. The matches are based on this week’s match-up. Those match-ups end at 7pm EST this Friday. Until that time, anything could change. Just guess based on that tracker site.

Too bad there has to be some further communication from anet on what is happening at reset and really they should address the quite legitimate concerns that have been raised in this thread and others..

Rule #2: Leave the glass cannon builds at home. Stacking nothing but power, crit, and condition damage gets you killed quickly.

Rule #3: Pick armor that will give you toughness or vitality. Or Both. Yes, you may say, but I am not a tank. Realize a balanced build lets you survive better. Most feel that vitality is greater than toughness, but a bit of toughness goes a long way.

I think glass cannons still work if you mainly attack at range eg. staff ele. Although I’m thinking of trying a more toughness oriented load out for my ele (knights gear).

Re toughness/vitality, on my other toons I prefer toughness. Give me enough vitality to survive conditions (17-18k health) and stack toughness otherwise.

I read that a dev stated something along the lines of “Diminishing returns are affecting dragon chests. We’re looking into it.”

Does anyone have any details on what exactly is happening in game?

@ANet: Can you give us an official statement on whats going on and what to expect?

And is it intended that dragon chests, indeed any chests be subject to DR?

The "Queue Bug", a theory as to the cause

Next lets look at the “new” culling system. This one causes the seemingly deserted maps issue. If you remember the way it was described during the initial test, search it out if you don’t, this new system aggressively culls, hides, allied players in favor of showing enemy players. The thought process behind this is that seeing the enemy is more important than seeing your allies. This allows you to get a better count of the enemy strength, works to lessen the impact of tactics that abuse culling like portal bombs, and keeps you from running head-first into enemy zeros that you don’t even see

Thats all well and good except it doesn’t actually achieve this.

Culling Poll: 1327 votes 23% Better 64% Worse

I think people are focusing too much on the amount of culling going on and not on the actual impact of the culling on WvW. It seems worse sometimes because your allies are culled around you more often, so you end up noticing more culling overall. It is much better in that enemies appear on your screen sooner, so you don’t get trampled by a giant zerg without seeing at least part of it first.

This is false, I’ve given the example in 1 of the other threads about how I was with a group running into a supply camp, an enemy group running the other way rendered AFTER we had run past each other, in fact both groups ran directly through each other and didn’t render until each had passed it was obvious we didn;t render for them either. I never had an instance like that occur under the old system.

The biggest problem is when you add Golems, its hard to protect something you just cant see. Even when they are at the door, today we were trying to get into Hills and had Golems and the only way I knew they were at the door was because it was going down quickly, other than that I never seen any Golem on my screen and for them to appear I literally had to run to the keep door in order to see them.

Yep the same thing has happened to me. I was 3-5 metres away from them and they did not render, not until I moved right on top of them.

Culling, What's Different ?

So I’ve been seeing people complain a lot about culling being worse this and culling being worse that.
But what has actually changed ?
To my experience these are the changes to the new Culling:
On a certain radius around you you can practically see everything and every enemy, no more fighting invisible mobs.

This is probably correct however that radius for enemies is way too small, plus there are slight delays as models load (even the default models) this may be caused by lag but that should be taken int account in the system.

Last night reached ridiculous heights my group was running into redwater lowlands with no enemy in sight, an enemy group running the opposite direction through us to the lake tower only rendered after we had passed them, no placeholders or anything rendered when they should have come in sight of us.

Then we were taking bay with a golem rush I was around 5m from the door and couldn’t see the golems at all, they only rendered when I moved right on top of them

Still not enough info. Try to craft 100 yellow items of 80 lvl (light armor masks for example) and salvage them with most expensive kit from vendor. I receive ~90 ectos from same amount items salvaged.

He shouldn’t have to especially not to craft armor for personal use.

I like to craft. I would rather craft than grind. Now, to craft a level 35 set of rares for my baby Thief, including weapons, requires 165 fine mats. (11 items)).

Crafting is a legitimate part of the game. Wishing to craft rare gear at level 35 (or any rare level) means that I am forced to “grind/farm” for those mats an inordinate period of time, or grind/farm gold to buy that at overinflated, manipulated TP prices.

A very low drop rate of these essential items means I am forced to grind. To participate in an area I have always enjoyed, I am forced to grind. I don’t wish to grind for a week just to produce one set of armor for an alt.. much less attempt to produce items for sale. I do it because it is a point of pride for me, in all games I can, to wear and use gear I have made. In EQ2 I lived with lower stats to use gear I made. This game is the worst grind to do basic crafting I have ever seen.

Now, according to some, because I would like to see a better drop rate, for these items in particular, I am a grinder, I love grinding, I live in a basement, have no intelligence, am just a lazy, no skill, no talent, donkey chasing a carrot. I’m part of a " vocal minority of grinders, farmers, addicts and exploiters who do not understand the concept of playing a game in order to have fun", (all terms taken from unmoderated anti “grinder” rants on this forum)

I just want to make my own gear. Cause I find it fun. Gosh, I’m sorry.

This so much this. This is my biggest problem with the loot drop system in a nutshell.

I’m sure they’ll be smart and not drop T1 servers down to T6.

And yet the logical conclusion from what they said is that that is exactly what will happen and they haven’t denied it.

If they continue on this path we need from Anet a specific justification well before reset addressing the quite reasonable points raised by players here.

Sorry to dissent, but I must disagree. One of the things I hate about most MMOs is the annoying number of skills they throw at you. GW2 strikes a very good balance of keeping a narrow skill band without sacrificing much in the way of depth.

They could do it while still keeping the few number of active skills by increasing the number of weapons available to each class or by adding more weapon skills to each weapon and the player would have to choose which weapon skills to use, like the slot skills.

We get the deck building aspect of GW1 with the GW2 approach.

I think you miss the point. Anet was placed in a position I don’t particularly envy. They have a bunch of players like me, who are happy to play for just cosmetic differences. Then they have a million or so players who play other MMOs who aren’t. So what should they do?

Not sell the game based on a false manifesto they never intended following.

Well. Seems that grinding is “working as intended”. One set of rares on a Character, armor and weapons, 150 fine craft comps, excluding Jewelry. Given the current drop rate, if you intend to gather that many comps, you will grind. If you have 6 chars leveling, you will grind a lot. If you are not grinding for the comps, you will be grinding for the gold to buy them. Since they are level and mob specific drops, you will be grinding on mobs in given areas and levels, more subject to whatever DR threshold there is, and it is unavoidable.

This is not about Legendaries, Shiny Uber gear, “phat lewt”. It is about acquisition of basic materials to accomplish a basic game function. It effects crafting at all levels, it is not about endgame.

I’ve yet to see an informative suggestion as to how to acquire components like this without grinding of some sort.

Well said I’ve been trying to articulate this very point since this debate began and you’ve put it better and more succinctly than I’ve been able to.

On SoS I haven’t experienced anything different in the last week at all. Queues about the same – averaging about 15 mintues or so during Oceanic time for b’lands, and sometimes queue will seem to pop for a number of us at about the same time. We have had our whole guild able to get on there, and numbers out on the field seem about the same.

I’m on SOS and my queue times have increased significantly as they have for my guild.
