That is of course only the case if the new profession is broken and thus much stronger than everyone else.
And the new skills are overpowered. And of course all of that will be true – they won’t be balanced, because ArenaNet is not going to be able to balance everything (if they can’t even balance the current skills, they won’t manage to do it with even more options on the table). So they will add overpowered features to make the players left behind literally left behind from other players.
That’s a nice way to combine peer pressure with desperation.
You are just assuming alot of stuff.
Others may assume that Anet are angels and they will give us three continents for free which will never happen.
Bottom line is, nothing is confirmed. And while I don’t think Anet won’t break the base-game for those who doesn’t buy, you will end up in the same situation as those who bought WoW vanilla and didn’t buy any expansion. Basically, stuck in time while the story moves forward not getting access to the new systems/mechanics/additions.
This is how MMOs work. I think people are setting their expectations too high since Anet gave content for free in the form of Living Story. In which case, people are awaiting Anet to revamp their systems, create new expansions and introduce quality content entirely for free.
In this case, it would make far more sense for GW2 to go F2P since there is no need for the box price by this point and don’t fool yourself by going with ‘’if they make it F2P, I will ask for a refund’‘. Companies don’t refund games when they change models neither do they need to stick with the same model.
If most of the content is free, it makes no sense for anyone to buy the expansion.
“We won’t have an expansion because we can add everything through the Living Story”
Well, clearly they couldn’t.
The fact ArenaNet is making an expansion is the best proof of how flawed the Living Story concept was. The “novel” way of adding content to a MMORPG has been forced to give place to the good, old expansion system.
ArenaNet better hope it’s not too little, too late. After the failure in China, they cannot afford to fail, again.
People said that WoW would die and Blizzard was desperate. Do you know when? It was 10-9 years ago.
Good luck with your wait, you have a long period ahead of you.
‘’Hard raids’’ are no different than Teq or the Wurm. People take weeks to learn them and then everyone starts to finish them and therefore they become stale.
There is no challenging MMO in today’s market, it is just challenging for the first 3 days, then all content becomes repitive and you will grind it with other experiened players and roll-over the content.
No, I can’t say I will till I see a few things
1. More info, most of the stuff I cared about was vague at best and as of now I still have no interest in actively playing again. I need more details.
2. I need to see a price. Right now, the expansion sounds small, and I need to know if that price will reflect that before I decide I’m gonna buy it. $20-$30? Sure, I’ll be willing to take a dive. Anything above that however? Absolutely not.
3. I want to see stuff that has been bugged since launch either finally fixed before or with the launch of the expansion.
It will, almost surely, be a full-priced expansion.
Good luck finding a new game ^^
Most people will comment here are going to say no because the title attracts specifically that group of the player-base.
There is a possibility that the engine with get a graphic-update.
I’m not mad on SAB I’m afraid, but I could always enjoy a Bazaar of the Four Winds or a Dragon Bash… but for story reasons I doubt we will get either of those now
Will there be any LS updates between now and then? Because the story could actually use a bit of tying up before the expansion; I don’t even know what happened to Caithe and the egg at the end of the last one, unless I missed something.
There won’t be. Colin already mentioned that the story picks up from the end of season 2.
I would love it if GW2 could release a single LS season between every expansion instead. That would keep the game in constant movement.
I highly doubt it.
After summer.
I don’t see it coming anytime sooner.
There won’t be LS updates while the expansion is getting released and they will probably take a while before going on with them.
We will see about the year assumption.
People also assumed that this is a 3rd Living Story season.
I will save the facepalms for later.
Meh, that’s not an expansion. In my day we had real expansions. This is just a better content release that you probably have to pay for.
It depends on the MMO really. If going by WoW standards, then it does seem kinda small if we’re talking about zones. With HoT, there’s going to be one region, with 3 biomes (basically vertical layered zones?). How many zones will be in Maguuma Jungle though?
Some expansions release a new class, so is GW2. Some release new skills, and so is GW2. These are pretty typical for expansions, without the mention of a new race. We’re getting new specs and new masteries, which is typical of other MMO expansions.
The disappointing thing though is no new mention of dungeons, and only one pvp map with a new game mode, from what we know so far. In other expansions, there’s multiple new dungeons and pvp maps. This is probably going to disappoint so many people.
Because other expansions are about gear-grind and you have to get the new gear from the new dungeons in which there MUST be new dungeons.
There won’t be a Living Story season between now and the expansion.
Which may point out that the expansion is coming soon in which case we are talking about a date after summer.
Until then there will probably be a feature pack and other additions.
Living Story just doesn’t work as far as we are talking about catching players’ attention. They realized that, they want to fix it.
I think that one of the strategies is to hype people over time until the release.
I don’t think they wanted to reveal everything and that is it, now it is time to wait.
Sounds like an excuse for being wrong.
Sure. Just show me where have I said that there would not be an expansion.
Have you noticed how often MMORPGs that are falling try to use an expansion as their last hope? I’m far from being surprised to see a GW2 expansion. It’s just interesting to acknowledge how ArenaNet itself noticed their “lovely” Living World simply didn’t cut it.
Don’t you think it is a great thing when a company finds their mistake and try to solve the issue by releasing content that the players have been asking for?
How does it work when other MMOs release expansions. (I don’t play them so I genuinely don’t know.) For example, WoW has about 7 expansions now, if I wanted to play it do I have to buy them all before I can even start? Or can I just get the base game and maybe the first one or two and just be locked out of certain areas/classes/races?
I know that’s how it worked in GW1. Even when all 4 campaigns and Eye of the North (expansion) had been released you could just buy 1 of them and you’d still be able to play. You just couldn’t go to the other continents, or get the skills, heroes, armor sets etc. associated with them.
But obviously this game is different in a lot of ways, it seems more like traditional MMOs so I’m not so sure.
You will be able to play without any expansions. However, in WoW, you won’t get the new areas/features/systems introduced with the expansions unless you buy them. GW2 seem to be heading the same way.
Usually older expansion become cheaper with alot of bundle-sales.
Yeah, stuff like a dungeon in the new map or some new twists could be there depite not being announced as they just highlighted the biggest new systems.
However, stuff like a new race or a new continent are just out of question now and could be confirmed to not make it into the game until a future expansion (assuming, Anet has decided to go with expansions from now on).
What was *not* anounced for the new expansion
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: nGumball.1283
- Dungeons
- Raids
- Races
- End to all zerker all dps
- Complexity to dungeons
- Non-heavy classes
The first two points aren’t confirmed. They may be added to the new region. Not a new raiding system but perhapd, raid-like content in the new maps.

There is a high chance ’’raids’’ and dungeons are added in the new region.
However, I don’t see them adding a new system called raiding system.
I am quite confident this is going to be paid.
We have to remember that there is a new region with 3 ’’floors’’.
There is a huge chance, raid-like content and new dungeons will be introduced.
With Anet releasing the new expansion, we can await more expansions faster like how it took WoW more than 2 years to release their first but then 1, each year.
@Rapthorne: there is no way, this is before summer, they may want to hype it up over-time to not end up with: 1 announcement – 7 months of waiting.
Yeah, having dungeons with the new areas are totally normal.
New race with the current story focusin so much on Sylvari won’t fit, just saying. That would either take the focus from the sylvari or shadow the release of a new race.
Sounds amazing. Although did notice they didn’t mention dungeons. Think that’s pretty much granted or did they want to move away from dungeons?
I am quite confident Anet commented at some point that they were not interested of releasing new dungeons as the game isn’t cenetered around gear-treadmill.
A simple, more understandable explanasion would be: players won’t play new, harder dungeons, unless Anet changes their whole reward-system where they offer exclusive rewards for harder dungeons which would make casuals rage.
Getting a new reace was doubtful from the begining as it seemed really hard to squeeze a new race with what is currently happening.
He keeps saying about more information between now and the expansion. Makes me wonder how far out the expansion is.
At least until summer.
They’re basically saying that everything is continuing the way it has been and there’s nothing that would change. They’re selling the expansion on progression.
Did you think the expansion would re-release the game?
Colin is here, RUN!
EXPANSION CONFIRMED
GW2 having more views on Twitch than Dota 2, lol.
Cho cho cho cho…… CRASH
Since I was commenting on your statements, my irrelevant statements are as relevant as yours and therefore you shouldn’t have commented in the first place if you can’t be relevant according to your own standards.
Point is that the whole whining of ‘’OMG, THIS IS THE FIRST MMO IN HISTORY TO HAVE AN EXPANSION SO LATE, NO CONTENT, OMFG’’ is not accurate. WoW was almost as late and had very little updates during these two years.
A B2P MMORPG should be cash-shop centric or the MMO would die and no, GW1 was never an MMORPG, it was just a smaller CORPG that hardly needed the same recourses to keep it alive or updated.
If you want an MMORPG with no focus on the cash-shop, you may want to play P2P games, not B2P ones. Not to mention the fact that alot of P2P games, including WoW is having alot of exclusive cosmetics in their shops by this point.
This fancy MMORPG where the cash-shop is irrelevant doesn’t exist yet. Good luck waiting for one though.
dont get on the hype train, you will just be sadly disappointed.. I think that if their gna make a expansion they would tell us.. instead of just a “trailer”
Just because they will announce the expansion today (assuming there is anything) doesn’t mean they will start woking on it today silly. It just means that they have been working on it for a long time and now they will announce it.
+ next time don’t state that you are a new player when you are obviously not.
Content was added. People complained it wasn’t enough.
Then more content was added, and people still complained it wasn’t enough.
That’s what’s happened.
and those people that complained about it was right….
the content they added under this 2 years is VERY minimal
HELL they removed HALF of the living story aka the whole season 1 this whole temporal contet was a FAIL from the begining. now half the comunity dont even know who the kitten are these people that they helping and why and how.
they SAW that this whole thing is a FAIL thats why they made Season 2 repeatable but allot of things in Season 2 does not make ANY SENSE because it needs season 1 to fully understand what the kitten is going on and why and where. Why i need to even care about these people im helping etcetc.
thats the problem with gaming company, once u give them money.. they forget about the community..
I can’t take your first question seriously by this point.
It seems that you opened the thread to turn it into an offensive bash-fest.
Enjoy your time because the most successful MMORPG in history has had less updates 2 years after release compared to GW2.
Of course is an Xpac.
I mean, double XP? 75% off? Obviously, they want people to get ready for the expansion.
And of course, isn’t going to be free. This is a B2P game, not a F2P.
There are even free to play games that charge for expansions.
That turns them into B2P games -_-
Well GW2 was released as a B2P game but let’s face it, it has became more of a F2P game. The simply fact that a game charges for a game does not make it a B2P game.
We generally consider a game like WoW or Wildstar a P2P game not a P2P B2P game. The terms F2P, B2P and P2P refer to the payment models and so to the way the game company makes it’s money.
The names evolved in this way but really F2P usually means cash-shop (while of course there are some truly F2P games that have no cash-shop ).
WoW makes most of it’s money with it’s subscriptions so we consider is a P2P game.
Many non-MMO’s but also GW1 make most of it’s money using the game-sales and expansions or / and sequels sales and so we consider them B2P games and then there are many games that make most of there money with the cash-shop and have usually no or low fee’s for the game or expansions.
GW2 was released as B2P but soon started focusing on there cash-shop in stead of on game / expansions sales. If they did focus on game and expansion-sales we would have seen less cash-shop stuff and would have had an expansion 1, max 1,5 year after release for them to generate the money they needed.
So based on that alone you can’t say it’s B2P so it will be paid. But lets hope it will be paid and they move back more towards a B2P game with after this expansion more regular expansions in stead of once every 3 years (more like once a year) and losing most of the focus on the cash-shop.
That is the best that could happen for this game not even looking at the content this expansion (if it is an expansion) is going to offer.
1. It is not 3 years yet.
2. WoW was P2P and its’ first expansion was almost as late.
3. GW was the franchise that started the trend with B2P talking about MMOs, therefore, there is nothing called ‘’B2P should not be like that’’. GW was the game that started the trend and Anet will take it the way they want, there are no standards.
4. For a game that is so focused on the cash-shop, it is facinating to know that GW2 had more content-updates than WoW the first 2 years after launch.
WoW had less content updates to their game before their first expansion which also came over 2 years after release.
New areas without any doubt.
And it won’t be any new continent.
Never trust a bandit.
NcSoft said in their report that there will be an expansion 2015 and it will not be free.
NcSoft did not say this.
Yes they did say it. Have you seen the report?
http://www.kdbdw.com/bbs/download/192028.pdf?attachmentId=192028“Also, in 2015, NCsoft is expected to roll out an expansion pack for Guild Wars 2, which
has sold more than 3mn copies since its release in 2012 in the US and Europe. We
assumed in our 2015 earnings estimates Guild Wars 2 expansion pack sales of around
2mn copies (US$50 per copy), and note that the expansion packs for Guild Wars 1 have
sold almost as much as the original game in the year of their release.”Do you honestly think NCsoft would write about themselves in third person?
Btw have a look at that url you posted. Kdbdw doesn’t have a quaggan to do with NCsoft, they are just analytics who have tried to be like “omg we were so right about this expansion date” for the past years now. Every year they’re sooooo sure it will arrive, yet they end up being wrong over and over again, until when we finally have one, and they manage to fool you into thinking their annual predictions were accurate.
Source criticism, you’re welcome.I also think that while NCSoft may want to release an expansion, it really comes down to what Anet wants to do. NCSoft may be the parent company of Anet, and Anet is basically just contractors for NCSoft, I am sure that it is part of Anets contract that Anet has a large say as to how the game is developed and run. IIRC early in 2013 NCSoft stated an expansion was in the works, and on the way, but Anet came forward and said “No there isn’t. Sorry for the confusion.”
If this is the case, then NCSofts predictions for an increase in revenue from more sales may be based on their desire for a traditional expansion, but those same predictions may not even be based on what Anet is actually doing, and the upcoming announcment.
If this is an expansion then Anet should have been working on it since the end of 2013.
The NPE system is NOTHING compared to almost any MMO title in the industry. It is just different compared to what we had. I don’t see it as a bad thing and most people who complain about it are vets.
GW2 has a vast world to explore and NPE makes it easier to understand. It does indeed make the experience more traditional however, I don’t specifically see it as a bad thing as many people left back in time because they couldn’t understand the game.
That heart of thorns will not feature a multi-class system.
Everquest Next will have it, and even if GW 2 releases new content that makes it as great to play as it was when we first started playing GW 2 leveling our first characters, it simply won’t hold my attention. Multi class should be the bread and butter of MMOs, it´s all about character progression/customization after all.
Yeah, HoT will not feature a multi-class. Anet already expressed their unwillingness to re-introduce a multiclass system.
that’s the worst possible moment for The Elder Scrolls Online that went b2p today ^^ not only GW2 is given away for almost free, but there’s also the addon announced this weekend. Man their forum is such a hate fest…never seen anything comparable lol
WUUUUUUT???
So soon? Everybody say TESO is becoming a very good game (I read they’re fixing things (unlike "someone who refuse to fix things after +2 years), adding innovative mechanisms [unlike “someone” who want to add outdated content like “raids” into his game -_-] and much more.)
This is not the worst moment for them. It’s perfect for us!
If half of what I read about TESO is real, then ArenaNet is forced to do something “big” to keep afloat.
After all, TESO wasn’t a direct competitor (subscription based + bad game) but now is on the same league as GW2.
Said fans about every title that have been released since GW2. We will see when GW2 is going to die because of these fancy titles that bearly has 6/10 as a critical score.
What have I just read :0!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
On this engine you’re having a laugh, it can’t even balance the load between CPU and GPU let laone to DX 10 not to mention DX 11. it’s an unoptimised and horribly bugy mess with no real back end you actually change without redisigning the whole engine.
Have you ever touched another MMO in you life?
Anet won’t comment if they don’t agree with the concept.
Blizzard used to do it, However, everytime Blizzard commented on a thread and/or discussed why some of the suggested concepts can’t make it into the game and that the players are actually wrong regarding the design, there was a major backclash with fans whining that the company is insulting their ideas.
Since that day, Blizzard started with their silence policy that eventually got popular in the inudstry and now Anet follows it.
