New spec system coming next update?

This is Anet’s way of playing it safe. In case it’s not ready, they can always say they never said it was going to be released with the L.A. update.

There’s lots of stuff to do…but there’s nothing you have to do.

That’s quite true and many people interpret that as a lack of content. When in fact Anet basically lets you pick your own goals and reach them at your own pace.

That’s my line of thinking precisely.

A lot of people seem to be needlessly throwing around the “lack of content” phrase without truly understanding what it means.

Well, for a new player who’s only been playing for several months, there’s still plenty to do, but for someone who’s been playing since launch, there is lack of new content.

Arenanet is working with a limited budget – deciding how to spread out the content is tricky. I think they have done alright. There is always a group of gamers who will burn through the content in a very short amount of time. You cannot keep up with them..

I wouldn’t call 6 months a very short amount of time, if you’re talking about their latest content update. 2.5 years prior to that is plenty of time to experience all of what GW2 has to offer.

It’s not needed, but i wouldn’t mind the option for new players. Veterans can already tell the classes apart, so that’s why it seems unneeded to them. Some MMOs have class icons, such as swtor, which is pretty useful for new players in pvp. I couldn’t imagine using them in zergs or wvw though.

Kinda regret crafting a GS.

But no, people just don’t give a kitten , but if i was wearing a Sunrise ( i wouldn’t go for Twilight because it doesn’t fit for my guardian [personal thing] ), things would be different.

No, not really. People still wouldn’t care, because legendaries aren’t earned. They are bought. When people see titles, others know it was earned by skill other than farming gold or buying it with real money.

The zerker meta could be killed instantly if they just implemented an automatic grouping function, which teleports people inside, just like every other MMO does it.

A penalty timer would be incurred for people who leave, thus making them stay in the group instead of bailing. There wouldn’t be much kicking either, because the chance of getting a non-zerker player would still be high, and in that case, they are just better off forming their own group.

An automatic dungeon tool would do wonders for new players and casual players. Believe it or not, people get intimidated when they see “80s only, zerker only, pros only”. It gives the impression that dungeons should be played a certain way, and that there’s no room for learning, especially 3 years into the game.

Best thing about GW2

I agree with the gear treadmill. I was getting back into Tera until one day a wild update appeared. Guess what? Your gear is outdated and useless, and your max level toons still have 5 levels to go! I haven’t played since.

My favourite part about gw2 is the wardrobe system and appearance customisation. I guess that’s handy as the endgame is Fashion Wars 2.

The other things that I really like are jumping puzzles, gathering and world completion. I have always had a tendency in any game to hoard crafting materials, and it’s nice to have ascended to work towards. It gives me a reason to gather everything I see, and not just gather them because “I might need them later on”, which was the previous mindset.

At least there’s content to progress with in Tera. New stories and new zones, etc. Incentive for new gear isn’t always bad. It gives players something to strive for.

I wish Anet had a report feature for people abusing chat. There is only Verbal Abuse for reporting, but i’m assuming that’s for people that directly verbally assault you.

Oh I think it comes down to the same thing really.

I’m not sure it does, since it’s pretty vague. It even warns not to abuse the report feature, so i’m guessing it’s for harassment and verbal abuse to yourself, and not for general chat in channels.

quite sad it’s always the same old stats even after 3 years

Why is that sad? We have the same dodge button and we have had 3 years to get good at the game. What would really be sad is if 3 years later we all still needed/wanted to wear tanky gear because we were so bad at the game.

Because it becomes less choice than even a trinity mmo. At least in a trinity mmo, you can have 3 roles.

And yes, people will respond that there are choices, but choosing a less optimal build/gear is non-productive to the group, and that’s a flaw of the system which should be fixed.

If you play guard your role is: DPS, reflects, condition removal, blinds, boons (aegis, protection,…)
If you play ele your role is: DPS, (maybe blinds), boons (Fury, Might)
If you play thief your role is: DPS, stealth, blinds, projectile defence

So I already found more than 3 different roles with just these classes. The difference is just that you have more than one role. I don’t get why this is less diverse.

Yes, but those are skills, and not traits and gear. The “zerker” builds deal with traits and gear, and to a lesser extent even skills. No sane group would take a Toughness, Healing, and Vitality person with traits and skills that don’t have Power or Precision.

I’m not afraid of instanced content because I can’t beat it. I’m not afraid of instanced content at all. I just don’t find at as fun.

Well, i don’t know which aspects of this game you do like then, seeing that:

open world: instanced maps.
Dungeons: small, instanced maps
pvp: instanced conquest battles
wvwvw: instanced server against server maps.

In essence, everything is “instanced”, but WvW and “open world” are vastly different than those others, because they do not restrict the amount of people that can join (until the population cap hits).

Where is promised challenging HOT content?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

nexxe.7081

The majority doesn’t want challenging content. You really think coders can’t code challenging A.I.? It’s really not that hard. If Anet wanted to, they could make every boss as difficult as Liadri, or even harder.

The problem is, when frustration sets in, players give up. I don’t really blame them either. If something is too frustrating for a game, i’d rather not be playing it. I’d rather have enjoyment instead of frustration. There needs to be a balance between the two, which is the most challenging thing on the developer side.

It’s not just Anet either, but most MMOs do this too. Why do you think players in these other games always complain about “dumbed down content”, which isn’t true at all. It’s balancing the game for all types of players, whether if it’s for physical disabilities, new players, veterans, and casual or hardcore players.

Should there be challenging content for those who want it? Sure, but it needs to be balanced for all playstyles, otherwise you will neglect everyone else who doesn’t want challenging content.

Just look at Wildstar for example. Hardcore raiding game that is on life support. The majority didn’t want that so they left in droves.

Uhm this is a videogame.

And the same principles apply. The majority decides. If I want to join an event and then just be terrible at completing that’s my choice. Maybe I want to play it in blues and greens and wipe.

Or you know, Anet could change it. I’m pretty sure they don’t want players end up leaving out of frustration. It was never intended to be exploited.

You could try using the streaming client. Just add -StreamingClient to the target on the GW2 shortcut. That might speed up getting into the game, as it lets you start playing before the entire download is finished.

Note that the streaming client is still a beta, but I’ve been using it for the last month or two and not had any problems.

Do what Stitch said in this quote.^

Here’s a link to help you. https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/coming-soon-beta-version-of-streaming-client/

“To try out content streaming, add -StreamingClient to the end of the target line on your Guild Wars 2 shortcut. When you next launch and patch the game, there will be a marker on the progress bar that shows you how much you’ll need to download before the game will be playable. Once the progress bar reaches that marker, you’ll be able to jump right in and start playing.”

Maybe someone else can help you on how to do it, because i don’t know how. This way you can play and be downloading it in the background, and you won’t have to wait for the full download.

It depends if you have a lvl 80 or not.

If you do, you can always do living story season 2 chapters, although you’ll need to purchase them with gems. If you don’t want to do that, you can do Silverwastes. Just look online to see how to do it. That’s currently the latest “endgame” for gw2 pve, or you can always do older content too.

nexxe.7081

It is not being afraid. It is business. Why make content that only 10 to 25% of the user base can play if it does not generate any new revenue? With out having a monthly fee, the whole “I will leave this game” is a hollow threat to ANet.

The world event/boss system is a very viable model for GW2.

Want to know how they can increase the incentive? Have raid bosses drop 10 gems per week.

This amount would depend on how many raid bosses there would be. If there were 5 raid bosses, and each dropped 10 gems, that would be 50 gems a week, 200 a month. Something like this would probably disrupt the market, but not by much, since it’s still a slower way than converting gold to gems, but it would be a great incentive.

I guarantee it would be higher than 50% of the player base doing them.

Where is promised challenging HOT content?

nexxe.7081

Simply put: we haven’t announced it yet – when we’re ready to show everything about our plans for challenging content for HoT, we’ll announce it.

Though it isn’t the “challenging content” feature discussed in our announcement – I will add we want our open world content experience to be more challenging as well just in general. Though the AI was better in our CBT experience – we think we still have a lot of work to do to get our creatures and encounters even at the start of Verdant Brink up to where we want them to be. Our game has great combat, our creatures and encounters should challenge and require you to use that combat system.

More info “when it’s ready”.

I hope that doesn’t mean that the “challenging content” will be put into those LW S2 Story instances which I hated to grind for achievements and had absolutely no reason to ever replay with my friends, unlike fractals and dungeons which I’m still doing daily (when I have time) despite them being stale.

It’s possible that it will be. I’ve always thought that those achievement instances could have replaced dungeons. It’s actually a great concept, and all they would need to do is add more bosses, which drop RNG exclusive gear, just like traditional mmos do. As it is now, they aren’t worth repeating, once you have all the achievements, and the other junk can just be acquired outside the instances.

If this is true then for each new outfit released, they should move one armor skin off of the gemstore and into the game to be obtainable by some means.

This sounds like a good idea, but then people would just wait it out and never buy them from the gem store. lol.

The only reason i can see them moving them out of the gem store, is if they aren’t selling well.

It’s a great change, but there are still more Gem Store weapons and outfits being released, than in-game items. They’ve done a good job with Season 2 though, and they released insect weapons in Dry Top, and also the Carapace and Lumi sets in Silverwastes. There’s also been the crafting backpacks, Mawdreys, and the lucky ram lantern. Overall though, it’s a noticeable positive change when compared to Season 1. Here’s hoping HoT follows through with more.

Raids?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

I was always under impression that designing raid content was allocating substantial development effort for very small minority of the player base (PVE oriented guilds that could organise raids). It makes sense for a game like WoW (that is based around the idea of vertical progression), but doesn’t really appear justifiable for a more casual-oriented game like GW2. Wasn’t that the original reason why GW2 didn’t have raids?

Theres no such thing as a completely casual orientated MMO. A game doesnt need to have vertical progression to have raids make sense. Raids can give skins and such for rewards instead of the next tier of gear. People still focus too much on what raids are in other games. GW2 is completely different so GW2 raids can be completely different. The only similarity would be that they are instanced content for organised groups (at least thats my personal hope).

Agreed. People are judging raiding unfairly, when it can be designed differently in GW2. The game can already have multiple instanced raids for guilds if it wanted to. Karka Queen, Wurm, Teq, and fractal raids for Battle for Lion’s Arch and Marionette. They could be tuned for harder challenges than they currently are. However, it’s the rewards that people will complain about, and there would need to be incentives to do them.

But, to your point, those aren’t raids. They are good world boss fights; much better than WoW WBs, but are not raids.

They are raids. Instanced group content isn’t the only form of raiding. There is also raiding in pvp.

Those are not raids. Open world bosses are world bosses. Raids are meant to be challenging, and the only way it can be challenging is in an instance. World bosses will never be hard, so long as they’re balanced so random Joe with 5 kids and 2 jobs can also participate and get full rewards.

Also, “there is also raiding in pvp.”

Lol. Funny joke. WvW is not raiding. Just stop.

What do you think the word raiding means?

“raid (r?d)
n.
1. A surprise attack by a small armed force.
2. A sudden forcible entry into a place by police: a raid on a gambling den.
3. An entrance into another’s territory for the purpose of seizing goods or valuables.”

“Adj. 1.raiding – characterized by plundering or pillaging or marauding; “bands of marauding Indians”; “predatory warfare”; “a raiding party”"

It’s always been about “pvp” , or in this case, people vs. people. Why do you think people used that word in MMOs? Because people used to form large groups against world bosses or in dungeons. It wasn’t until later they became instanced. Is that really hard to understand? Deny it all you want, and use a mocking tone, but the facts are against you.

I just have it bound to my thumb button on my mouse, it’s easy. I feel like this is more of an l2p problem than an ANet problem.

Huh? It has nothing to do with learning to play. It’s an inconvenience. It has nothing to do with challenge. It’s about as useful as holding ctrl down to see players/npcs names.

I understand why they do it though, because they actually want people to search for items such as the coins in dry top or silverwastes, but they could actually code those to be ignored by the feature.

What does challenge have to do with learning to play? Being able to rebind a key to something more convenient, like caps lock, or scroll lock, is just as much understanding how the game works as dodging. Like I said, which was my point, I rebound it to the thumb button on my mouse, which made it much more convenient. If you don’t like pressing ctrl, make it something else.

Then don’t use “l2p” which implies that people should be “learning” how to overcome a challenge, problem, or task.

If you want to talk about degrees of learning, such as dodge, there is no comparison between the two. With dodge, you’re trying to evade and survive, with holding ctrl down, you’re trying to view nameplates on objects.

The latter is an inconvenience, and i’ve already explained why they do it. It’s because they want people to find objects as some sort of challenge, but there are better ways of doing it than holding down a button and hiding nameplates.

As i’ve already said, it’s a legacy feature from GW1, but it’s not one that people would miss. They need to make it a toggle.

You missed the point, pretty sure you didn’t even bother to read a single word. It’s still learn to play, l2p, to figure out rebinding as it is to learn to beat a boss or a fractal or wtf ever. If it is an aspect of the game that you have not mastered to make your life easier in any situation, not just a challenging situation, then it is an l2p situation.

No, you’re the one missing the point entirely, but i’m not going to respond again if you can’t comprehend what i’m saying, or refuse to understand.

Rebinding isn’t going to change the way the mechanic works. You will still have to hold a key down in order to see nameplates on objects. You cannot toggle it indefinitely either, even if it’s a macro.

Holding down Ctrl is essential while farming or finding objects in a zerg.

Traditionally, there weren’t any instanced raids. They were all open-world, and devs made them instanced for a variety of reasons, mostly due to griefers and lag.

They also became instanced because it provided more challenging content. When you have open-world encounters, they become zerged like in GW2. The GW2 fanboys hate everything about traditional raids though, so don’t expect them to understand the positives of instanced raiding.

Wurm and Teq should have been instanced. The only reason that kind of content isn’t good is because it’s open world and there is no way to get a guild group in a clean map without a zillion people on TS map hopping everywhere. That means to get in, even if you’re in a guild like TTS, you have to wait 15-30 minutes at least. Why? What’s the point? It’s a waste of time, and the end result is the same as if it were instanced to start: non-guild members get excluded because they can’t teleport into the map before it’s full.

It seems like ANET isn’t going to be making any more dungeons but will just be focusing on minor bug fixes and Fractals. Any instanced Zerg content should be like Teq or Wurm but give parties more control of how to enter the map and when to start the event.

In other words, raids. The GW2 playerbase is so fickle though. They believe everything that is composed of traditional MMOs is evil.

@ Lord Funk, Queensdale is always available if complex maps are not your thing.

This doesn’t speak to his concerns because he is looking for new, future content he wants to do, not recycle old content.

If he doesn’t like the new maps maybe he should look for a new game then, because the game is moving in a different direction than the easy mode maps we have played for years. I am happy with the direction it is going and I think the majority of veteran players will feel the same way.

Why do people always want others to leave the game? I’m sure Anet doesn’t think like that. They actually want people to enjoy their creations, and all the hard work they put into them.

If they didn’t get feedback from people that aren’t satisfied, they wouldn’t know how to change their game for the better. Telling them to simply stop playing is counter-productive for the game.

As op already have said my impression was pretty much the same. Nothing to do with hard or ez content. Just very unpractical and boring. Making thigs take longer to navigate doesn’t make it harder, just more tideous. Especially after doing it over and over again. Running up the same stairs a 100 times. Running around that cliff on a small path fighting trash mobs all the way a 100 times.

As some have mentioned getting gliders and mushroom jumping might make it less tideous? We´ll have to see. The events didn´t exacty seem fun either. No events I look forward to repeating on this map over and over every day.

I see the new zone more in line with Silverwastes, where everything is connected into a coherent story and overarching theme.

If you compare it to Orr, it wasn’t as coherent. Although the theme was still against Zhaitan and the Risen, they weren’t really connected to each other. They were more isolated.

I’m not sure how i feel about this though. I like the meta-events such as in silverwastes, but i also liked how events worked in Orr too. It made the zones feel more diverse in it’s events, and made the zone feel larger.

The game was remade from the ground up… by your logic it has been 11 years since guild wars launched so that is how long this expansion has been in the making.

So if they shut down GW2 today and re-launched it with the release of HoT, the release date of the game would be the launch of HoT rather than the original release of the game?

Guild Wars 2 is a completely different game than GW1 (not even the same genre) whilst A Realm Reborn is still Final Fantasy XIV.

Except it’s not: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XIV:_A_Realm_Reborn#Development

“However, outdated and cumbersome programming choices in the game code prevented the more radical modifications necessary to enhance the game. Thus, planning for a brand new game built from scratch started in January 2011 and development began in earnest by April, with work on a new game engine and server structure.”

“Yoshida reflected on the herculean task of maintaining and updating an MMORPG while simultaneously developing a new one over the course of just two years and eight months.”

He was developing a NEW one alongside the original FFIV.

Nobody would say GW2 is an expansion to GW1, yet you insist that ARR is an expansion to FFXIV.

GW2 has been in development since 2007, which would be 8 years so far. FFIV:ARR had a total revamp from scratch and started development around 2011-2012.

GW2 was released in 2012 with its first expansion (most likely) coming in 2015 (3 years)
FFXIV was released in 2010 with its first expansion released in 2013 (3 years) with the second expansion coming 2015 (2 years after first one and 5 years after original release).

ARR was not an expansion. Why do you keep insisting it is?

I would also like to state that, while not a UI concern, I’m not really fond of the XP/leveling method of ‘training’ masteries. I’d much rather see special events/mini-dungeons/encounters/etc. that unlock specific mastery abilities.

Grind ‘XP’/spend is just kind of samey and bland.

I agree. I was disappointed as to how masteries are acquired. People will end up maxing them out in a week. It should also take longer like the WvW system. I actually thought we would have to do some gliding to increase the xp for it, or use shrooms to increase it.

A Realm Reborn was a massive content drop in a new box. By any reasonable definition of the word, that qualifies as an expansion even if it was branded as a relaunch.

Fair point I suppose.
But that still means 3 years after launch, and then the next two years after that. So it really wouldn’t be considered any faster than GW2 despite what people want to claim.

We needed another thread complaining about the perceived size of HoT and the lack of updates until HoT releases?

It’s a legitimate concern, especially since we don’t know how much they will be charging. If you don’t like these threads, then don’t reply to them. Your posts about them are just as annoying.

It was too confusing for me.

It wasn’t until towards the end that i realized they work like traits.

Equip the “trait”, then level it up. The “unspent points” confused me also.

The WvW mastery UI is way better and less confusing. They should’ve used that instead.
