Not going to argue which class is harder.
But having a class have more potential for power because all other classes are easymode is stupidly bad design.
They are accountable.
All of these things add to customer dissatisfaction.
Dissatisfied customers will often leave the game and voice their complaints, especially in todays MMO market that is a huge deal because most new releases are bad WoW clones and people will generally fish for how people feel about the game before buying it.
With enough dissatisfied customers the game will crash and burn, regardless of its merits due to negative advertising.
ANet and its staff are accountable because they will get less money and may even lose their jobs. If you are after a public apology etc, then yes it’s good PR, but ANet isn’t exactly known for good PR practices.
the class still being in beta would probably be the cause of this.
Play an Engineer and see how GOD mode it is..
Ele thinks they are the king of utility?
Pah!
Anet needs to stop playing on there thieves and warriors and seriously see the BS us engineers go through. For a week straight I’ve been trying to come up with builds to make the class seem useful or do more dmg than a Catholic School girl on Sunday on her way to church. But nothing at all has changed but diff ways to die. If they dnt work on this soon I think they might lose alot of active players in the engineer community. I mean I seriously dnt have fun anymore i just get depressed when i log on my engineer.
What makes you think the engineer community consists of a lot of players? lol.
Think of it this way, considering ANet’s class balance team consists of two people, which classes are they going to spend the most time fixing? Ones like warriors/thieves and guardians?
Or engi/ranger/necro?
Wait until you see the awesome of hip firing a 6 ft long rifle with a silencer and scope.
-Engineer kits now scale with main weapon. All kits have been nerfed in damage and healing by 80% to compensate for this.
-Engineer pistols were doing significantly more damage than intended. This doesn’t fit our design philosophy that engineers gain more utility than any other class from kits so their main weapons should be used primarily as utility skills. As such we have replaced static shot with an ability that teleports you a random distance, (0-1500) and facing a random direction, we feel as though it fits with our design philosophy that engineers should be quirky masterminds with lots of fun, interesting and chaotic skills.
No you haven’t hahahhaa.
Link all the GotY awards for the sites you mentioned, go on.
I wouldn’t bother.
SW:TOR was the game of the year last year from the same sources. You can see how reliable that is.
Oh I know, just calling him on spouting lies while telling everyone else to stop doing so in the same post.

Never said the game never won any awards.
But how many of those are game of the years?
No you haven’t hahahhaa.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you don’t seem to know what game of the year actually is.

I have linked all my sources, you’re just spouting misinformation. Let people see the links and decide for themselves.
You’re a troll, and not a very good one.
You gotta try more personal things.

a) GW2 won nearly all the GOTY awards for 2012, including all the major publications:
- IGN
- G4
- PCGamer
- Gamespot
- etc
as well as minor ones like Time, Zam, etc (lol)b) Blizzard has already downsized and is continuing to downsize, and Vivendi is even looking to sell it off
c) The playerbase of GW2 has increased, we were there and actually saw the server capacity go up in both regions all at the same time in December
d) Stop spreading misinformation. If you don’t want to play the game fine, spending so much time trying to make everyone else believe it’s dying when it’s actually growing is just weird xD
From what I can see:
1) IGN was journey, G4 was borderlands 2, PCGamer was mass effect 3. Gamespot was journey.
2) Not relevant.
3) You are beyond hope if you think there are more than 2 million active players.
4)Next?
The game is doing very well:
1)- Most of the 2012 Game of the Year awards
2)- Other MMOs including WoW are in decline (check Vivendi’s numbers and the fact that 1/3rd of WoW servers are dead and need to be merged, but won’t)
3)- ArenaNet is still hiring more people while everyone else is laying people off
4)- Servers were actually increased in capacity in end December due to complains about them being too full, they all went from Full to High so more people could make chars
5)- The game is earning truckloads of money for ArenaNet, there was a research report from just a week ago from a brokerage firm saying that Q1 2013 was going to be huge on the back of growing GW2 sales
These are the facts.
Why am I not surprised it’s Zeldain and Kakeru spouting this bull about the game being in trouble again, like every day.
Guys, get over it, GW2 is already a huge success. The population is high, the game is popular, it’s the best MMO out there and it’s still growing.
But please, feel free to continue doomsaying since it keeps you here and enjoying yourself xD
1) No, they won like 2?
2) Probable, not really relevant, I doubt people will leave WoW for a f2p buggy unpolished version of it.
3) Blizzard is still hiring too, point?
4) That is because of the way this game’s servers work, this game hasn’t grown in playerbase since release that is certain.
5) Source? Not being a dick just curious.
On GotY – Journey, Borderlands2, Walking Dead, XCOM and Farcry were the most popular choices.

I notice a lot of elitists in this thread that don’t (or can’t?) take into consideration that other people have different play styles, and that play style can, and often does, affect the difficulty of learning and/or playing of some games.
Lich, I can’t agree that you wasted your money. If this was a subscription based game I would say you did, but it’s a “buy and forget” title. You buy it and, short of expansions, you never have to pay anything more on it (the “forget” part).
GW2 is a solid game. I think ANet did an outstanding job with it. But it’s not my game. As many have said in this thread, combat is very heavy on mobility. That’s actually part of what I don’t like about the game (personal taste), but it’s also part of what sets GW2 apart from most other MMOs and makes it the amazing game it is. That heavy reliance on mobility works for GW2. The only drawback to that is many veteran MMO players are not used to such a play style. Some of us can adapt better than others. I was able to adapt well enough, but I knew I’d never be great at it (might have something to do with just not liking the need to constantly move shrug).
Again, I don’t believe you wasted your money. There’s no sub. You can always return to the game. Perhaps in a few months, a year or some other time you’ll return and it’ll suddenly “click” for whatever reason and you’ll plow through mobs like they were nothing. Or you might have some friends that all want to give it a try and together you’ll all have an amazing time and stay. Or, like me, you’ll pop in now and then because you like world in the game (or some other reason) and you’ll play for a bit and then not log in again for a few months at a time.
Ultimately, though, it comes down to how the game play and your play style mesh. If they don’t, you’ll likely not enjoy it much, even though you like many other aspects. If they do, you’ll take for granted the difficulty of learning a different style of play (as many people have proven in this thread) and/or enjoy the game.
:)
Oh come on, not being able to get out of noob zones isn’t “different playstyles” it’s nothing short of doing something completely wrong.
If this game was doing well, ANet would be advertising numbers.
They are not.
I don’t think that’s verifiable proof of a company not doing well. Guild Wars 1 was a wild success and I may be wrong here, but I don’t recall them advertising the playerbase for that. While it may seem like there are no players, there are clearly enough to keep ANet in business, which would imply that there -is- a semblance of success.
I wouldn’t say guildwars was a wild success in terms of population. It was a fun game sure but remember that game wasn’t competing with every other MMO on the market as it filled a niche.
This game does not, it is being compared to WoW and all of its clones for a reason.
It’s not verifiable proof you are absolutely right, but its a good indication. If companies have a reason to boast, they generally do – its good marketing.
If this game was doing well, ANet would be advertising numbers.
They are not.
If you log in during offpeak hours, yeah its dead on many servers.
However during the day you should be able to find fractals and some WvW action.
Good mesmers should kill you 1v1 (at least ones that know how to do a proper shatter combo but thats rare in WvW so be thankful.)
Bunker water eles? You won’t kill them, you simply don’t have the DPS to down them. But again, you won’t see many of those in WvW either.
IDK about other ele’s because I did SPvP predominantly and that’s the only ele you came across, everytime I roamed WvW it was a different story because pretty much everyone I came across was scaled or just didn’t know how to play.
So in short, hope your opponent is bad.
To all the people saying this is a whine post or w/e, try playing some TPvP on your engi and killing a good mes or ele. Mesmers you can sometimes beat but its definitely an uphill battle. Against eles just stall until their team or yours shows up.
I am legitimately curious as to how you die often in this game, most would consider this game too easy if anything.
If you want help show us some videos or something. Rolling around and staying mobile isn’t required.
If you can’t level in this game using guardians or warriors you are doing something really really wrong, these classes could quite easily auto attack their way to 80.
In my humble opinion AH manipulation is the best thing this game offers.
Highest challenge and highest reward.
And to all those who say “wut it isn’t hard” yeah no kitten, but compare it to the rest of the game.
all esports games are for the most part balanced.
gw2 is not balanced.
most esports games are fun to play and watch.
gw2 is neither (spvp)
I got gw2 at launch and loved it, got to 71, then the world of warcraft expansion came out and I got sucked into that. So today I logged on(after being tired of wow), I saw maybe 60% less people in a main city from what I last remembered. The zones are dead.
So my main questions are:
I understand that every game will have a reduction of players after release, but is that reason in this case?Is there dueling yet? I like dueling with my friends, it gives me something to do besides sit in a main city.
How is the pvp, is it more balanced?
Are the dungeons still a cluster of mess?
Is there any sort of end game progression that makes you want to keep playing to get better? Or is it still level up to 80 for nothing?
I’d appreciate a constructive response. Thank you for your time.
1) No
2)No
3)No, the original dungeons are now obsolete.
5)Yep, you can run fractals now. Kinda like farming for exotic gear from the previous dungeons except less rewarding.
Bad analogy. Bread is a consumable and your gratification comes from eating it.
Spending money on a game that is meant to have long term playability shouldn’t be compared to spending money on FOOD.
You are buying product that you need, for eating or entertainment, it makes little difference.
Both baker and game company are offering their products, you can buy it or not its up to you.
A better analogy would be if a bread seller sold you stale bread, why should you keep buying bread from them?
Or another one,
If said bread seller kept changing what they sold everyday in a small way, and were gravitating towards something else, unless you knew what they were gravitating towards why would you keep supporting the store? You go to the bread store under the premise that you will be buying bread from them.
The breadstore doesn’t owe you anything, but if they want you to keep going back they would probably inform you what direction they were going to go in terms of sales, or at the very least come up with a halfway decent excuse, like I don’t know, there was a gap in our supply of pies so we decided to sell you bricks instead.
edit: If you returned your stale bread and said “what the hell is this” and their response was “ kitten off we don’t owe you anything” said bread shop wouldn’t be in business for very long.
(edited by nofo.8469)
I would recommend you play a warrior.
It has a rifle, that performs as a rifle should.
And it does damage.
Engineer ranged capability is kinda like ANet’s QA team – non existent.
Inb4 somebody calls you vocal minority and a “complainer”.
GW2 was never a WoW killer… it’s a GW2 killer.
No wonder they don’t make the game population public.
He went there white knights.
Sic him!
This build does slightly more damage than yours.
Good effort though.
Nope, and everything else got nerfed too.
Doesn’t entice you to come back?
Pity.
The entire destiny’s edge crew is pretty terrible.
It just so happens that logan thackerayy is the biggest chump of them all.
There is a reason WoW hit 13 mil and GW2 hasn’t even hit 2-3+ mil in box sales and I seriously doubt there are even over a mil active players.
Lineage 2 had over 17 million subscribers before 5 years, why all people talk about WoW. It is nothing special. And why Anet made game like WoW?
Lineage was for a different market.
This game was built primarily for western audiences.
Lineage was also PvP intense IIRC, which wouldn’t at all be beneficial for GW2’s target audience.
Dodge is fine.
Problem is the rest of the combat system is as shallow as a kids pool.
“everything is optional”
While I’d agree that this is not a “bad thing”, I think the real issue is that the content is not tied together. There are lots and lots of random events happening that don’t create a story or add to any lore or even vaguely be inter related.
I played “Skyrim” for over 400hrs. There’s simply a lot of content there. I would not say that all of it was “optional” as a good percentage of the content was chained or otherwise tied together. Granted the level of quest and story intergration that a single player game like “Skyrim” would be a logistical nightmare in a MMO some of the concepts could be used in a MMO.
However, it all started with choice. If I wanted a companion, I needed to be come a ‘thane’ of one of the holds that granted them, perform a number of quests, tasks and purchase a house. If I wanted a chance to kill the emperor, I needed to join the “Dark Brotherhood” and carry out a number of “hits” and tasks all leading up to the job of taking out the emperor.
GW2 has lots of open spaces to explore but what of buildings, crypts, mines and other places? Skyrim had a few 100 holes in the ground, each one with creatures, loot and a good percentage of them with some sort of quest or back story which tied in to over world content. It all was tied together.
I might be considered a ‘casual gamer’, I don’t have time to agonize over spread sheets of stats, inventory items and map paths. I have ~3hrs an evening I can set aside to play a video game. Frankly, I don’t ‘get’ why players want to be able to ‘level’ a toon in a few days or weeks. Heck, after 400hrs I still had not reached the level cap on Skyrim!
I also don’t get how inept and casual seem to always be shuffled together in these forums. Granted, I’m not as good as others (don’t play on ‘insane’ mode) and have obligations which don’t allow me to do 12hr ‘marathon’ play sessions, I do play most games at the ‘adept’ or more difficult settings and generally don’t wish to burn through an entire game in a few days/weeks. I think a few months to reach a in game goal is perfectly fine design element.
I loved skyrim too, hell I still play it and yeah I have put about 400+ hours into it as well. If you compare them on RPG, story or gameplay merit Skyrim is going to come ahead in every regard.
The advantages of a game like guildwars2 is its more social, and it should be more addictive. However the main problem I can see with guildwars 2, is its loot is actually worse than Skyrim or any other game that has loot in it period, if you want people to become addicted to instant gratification there has to be gratification.
Socially this game is rather inept as well, not too surprising given its designed for “people who hate MMO’s” lol, which is rather silly since the main strength of an MMO is the community and capability for social activities, neither of which this game capitalizes on.
honestly I think the genre has just played itself out over the last ten years and it has gotten so bad there is no recovery at this point.
back when it was daoc and eq things were different.
people expected it to takes many months to level up a single character
people expected getting groups to be very hard without a guild
people expected dungeons to be extremely difficultso on and so forth…
now people expect to be max level in under a week, they expect groups to be handed to them, and they expect dungeons and things to be nothing more than easy mode loot treadmills they repeat on a daily basis.
times change and things change, yes its true.
the thing is this genre has changed so much that its a different type of person who plays these games these days.
these days this genre is filled with self entitled people who want everything handed to them while they play on easy mode.
some people need to just let the glory days go, they are gone forever, this is all that is left.
MMO’s are now made on the premise of addiction, not fun or challenge.
EQ started it, WoW perfected it.
There’s a bigger market for addicts than there is for people who play for fun or challenge.
Expect MMO’s in 10 years time to be even more addictive and less fun/challenging.
question: how can a game be addictive, but not fun?
Poorly worded on my part, most people who are addicts enjoy being addicts therefore they are having fun, its the source of the fun that I have a problem with.
Fun can come from the immediate gratification from leveling up or getting that next piece of loot no denying that. Many people pull the lever on slot machines because they are having “fun” doing so because they enjoy the feeling they get when they receive that instant gratification.
Saying that though, designing computer games around this philosophy isn’t what I would consider fun. Not saying my version of fun is better than anyone elses I’m just addressing why I feel as though MMO’s have evolved into online lobbies with various loot/money/progression delivering activities.
In that post I meant to say fun generated through gameplay elements rather than instant gratification.
Yeah.
I asked about the first one and a mod deleted my post so I would say so.
The second one, yeah its abusing game mechanics in an unintended fashion to inject more money into the system (due to the chest you get from it)
Enjoy your bans!
… are there any reason? Seems from people posts that GW2 now is extremely grindy (fractals), still have major issues with balance in WvW (theives etc) and no progression at all for pvp’ers (other then go do PvE for Fractal-stuff).
So, if its just the same game as 3 month ago – with more grinding – I wont borther.
Yeah pretty much.
Wait a few months they might have polished their current content, but with easter coming up I highly doubt it.
edit: Oh and don’t forget valentines day.
Holy crap, this is the first time I feel everyone complaining in here must be 12 or inept at hitting anything but the 1 key. +1 respect to the people that don’t do so. Come back kiddies when you have an engineer at cap getting insta killed by a double dagger thief using a kill combo.
Pretty sure you are just another OP engineers on the FOTM train.
Double dagger thief at least requires some skill to get in positions and such.
Engineer is just smashing face against keyboard with bombs and grenades flying everywhere.
edit: this train terminates at nerf station, enjoy your ride

I hope you guys will get around to posting in the various class forums too. Engineers and Rangers are regarded by the majority of the community to be fighting for last place right now in both PvE and PvP. Hopefully some real progress will come to these classes in 2013 instead of the empty promises and missed oppurtunity we saw in 2012 with QOL improvements beign disguised and class buffs.
No for the love of god leave engineers alone.
Class is fine no more fixes ever again.
Thanks.
Going to have to go with Logan Thackerayy here.
I’m surprised ANet isn’t boasting about concurrent users given how successful this game is.
engineer OP, can do everything 120%.
Ele terrible in comparison.
agreed
being able to apply an aoe chill from 1500 units away is stupidly OP too.
engineers weren’t nerfed enough
No Perm ban is about right.
Please don’t change it. Exploiters should be all perm banned.
CoF speed runs were exploits that made money, should ban all those people too.
Oh wait they would have about 200 people left then lol.
Ah, see I don’t do PvP and I don’t have an engi, so I didn’t know about those.
Yes, that sound pretty hardcore, 1500 is impossible to get! how can you reach them?
with difficulty, and if you manage to get close they just knock you around like a pingpong ball.
This reminds me of playing WoW against a stunlock rogue at release before they put diminishing returns in
Geez, and they were just nerfed!
Not enough, chill is a rare condition for a reason.
Bleed/blind/poison chill AOE at max range
wow just wow.
thats ignoring the 10 knockbacks, immobilises they have, while bunnyhopping all over the place.
Engineers are ridiculous.
Why the hell can they spam an AOE attack at 1500 range? That is the max possible range for any attack in the game.
And they have a spammable AoE skill, AoE blind, AoE chill etc at this range.
I mean really ANET how did this make it out of beta?
Having a 15000 AoE chill is borderline broken as is, coupled with AoE everything else.
God kitten really?
yea well i mean the important bugs that really need fixing and minion AI definitly asap plz i wanna play a necro but i like the idea of a minion master above all lol. running around with my slaves ;D
shh they coming for you next
People the point of games is to have fun, not playing WvWvW because there isn’t enough rewards is silly because there will obviously be more in the future and more stuff will come. Play stuff because it entertains you, why do you always have to be rewarded for what you do?
Seconded. Will never happen though. People like to sit behind their computer monitors and complain. :P
‘I WANT IT ALL AND I WANT IT, /NAO!/’
And when they do get it, they find something else to kitten about. This does /not/ include complaining about something that is game-breaking broken, however. An exploit is an exploit, plain and simple.
Basically WvW isn’t fun for a lot of people, if you can’t make an aspect of the game fun then relying on the carrot dangling in front is always a good way to make people enjoy it through addiction.
Seems to have worked for the rest of this game.
necros been complaining since this game came out and look how much they have done for necro :P not alot at all… nothing really important has been done.. x.x lol
They did the right thing, at least they didn’t get beaten to death with the nerf bat for insinuating their class was a tiny bit buggy.
My build is dual pistols with elixirs, but I can easily change it to pistol/shield or flamethrower or elixir.
So?
Again, all professions can change weapons. That’s not versatility. You’re not suddenly going from supporter to tank to dps. And no, 200 toughness don’t make you a tank.If I go with rifle, I go all the way across with the power line so I can get more damage and switch out to nades if I want.
Still changing from dps to dps.
Where is the versatility? Your examples are what other classes do just by pressing swap weapon button.
What the hell, dps to dps, it’s completely different dps, you go from single target to AoEs that can keep people from attacking the keep at close range. It’s COMPLETELY different and if you can’t see that, i guess I can’t help you.
No 200 toughness doesn’t make you a tank, but it does help, plus the stacks of might come in handy… oh yeah, that extra 15% damage boost isn’t bad being tossed in there too.
I think his point is other classes can go from one “entirely different type!” of dps spec to another with the press of a button.
