I remember seeing a video pre-launch where someone from Anet was talking about how lots of things they developed were thrown out and that they sort of tested and retested and redesigned things etc. Already then I got this feeling that in their enthusiasm to bring it down to the core, that things would be too basic and too simplistic. My view is that that feeling was right.
What Juzztn describes is sort of what I was hoping for as well.
This is reminding me of a AAA ARPG released earlier this year.
Because they aren’t problems with the game.
I actually laughed out loud at this post. There are always problems in every game. There is no such thing as perfection.
Even the devs have admitted that things aren’t going as well as they’d hoped and that they’re working on it. You can’t possibly believe that the game is absolutely perfect as is, that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. Because even the devs don’t think that.
2) When did they say WvW was PvE over PvP? It’s both, and with a greater influence of PvP.
It’s designed to function like PvE.
It’s considered part of the PvE world for map completion, provides kills and resource hubs and loot drops just like PvE, and kills/activities there contribute towards PvE achievements. Also, all of the PvE events thus far have altered the WvW maps as well….such as the Wintersday gifts, which appeared not only in normal PvE maps but also WvW.
It’s a PvE world in which PvP exists. I don’t disagree that PvP is the bulk of it, as it should be, but it’s clearly considered a PvE zone by the developers. So if they want to consider it a PvE zone, it would make sense for the zone to follow the PvE philosophy of “players helping players”.
Oh, and I completely disagree with your statement about speeding not being the drivers fault? :/ I hope that’s not what you meant by this and I’m just not understanding your point.
No, that’s not it at all. I’m saying that the car’s manufacturers can’t exactly come out and say “hey, stop using our barely-street-legal car to race” if they built it that way.
They built WvW as a PvE zone. Ergo it should follow their PvE philosophy. Honestly I don’t think the puzzles should exist in there at all. But since they do and they aren’t going away, it only makes sense to design them with the notion that rival servers will be naturally inclined to troll each others’ jumping puzzles. I believe strongly in their philosophy of creating a cooperative game environment, and to that end, I think killing in JPs should be off-limits.
3) I suppose some people might feel this should be implemented, but then again after, as you said you learn the hard way, you’re not going to do it again are you?
Ah, but herein lies the core question you must ask yourself, then:
Do you want to design your game around learning via helpful tool tips, experience, and friendly advice from fellow players, things which all promote healthy interaction and make the game easier to learn and get engaged in?
Or do you want to design your game around trial-and-error and/or insta-death mechanics that are intended to frustrate you with their difficulty so that you feel some sense of achievement by surpassing these things?
I think the devs intend to make the former, but in several areas I see a lot of the latter elements. And that’s not very good design mostly because it’s inconsistent. The game’s learning curve isn’t necessarily easy for someone used to traditional MMOs or RPGs. You may not win them over by frustrating them in early portions of the game with things like this, and you certainly don’t win many fans over to your new model by encouraging the use of such frustration mechanics more and more as you get further in the game (which GW2 most certainly does).
My suggestion is not intended to “baby down” the game as some would claim, but rather to add a useful feature that all levels could benefit from, one that helps avoid errors that might frustrate a newer player not used to this sort of game.
He said that “they” are not problems with the game, not “there” are no problems with the game.
WvW is primarily a PvP zone, the jumping puzzle rewards PvP rewards so if you have no interest in PvP what are you doing there in the first place.
This game has flaws, no direct trading is one of them but complaining about getting killed in a PvP zone, really?
“Babying down” and accessibility go hand in hand, which is what you are suggesting. And this game has enough hand holding as is.
Maybe engineers will take up a pet slot instead of a group slot for fractals?
What you are suggesting is making this a player driven PvP game.
The people who bought this game expecting anything even remotely similar to that are long gone.
Nah guys, I saw an ANet dev playing a guardian at the clocktower puzzle, so no they don’t all play warriors.
Warriors, their underwater combat needs some serious fixes clearly.
1st: I think the devs are checking the DoT AoEs to be nerfed, so dumb warriors stop complaining they die at gates (WvW), either way they might be thinking of nerfing it just in WvW.
2nd: Static discharge is not AoE IMO, because there’s no field, no circle, it’s simply a projectile that ricochets.
3rd: if they ARE actually going to nerf it, then they MUST fix it first, because there’s like 5 skills that make it work correctly: the rifle turret’s toolbelt, throw wrench, net shot from net turret, the utility goggles’ toolbelt and the ram… and none of these is actually USEFUL by itself, it NEEDS the static discharge to actually be viable, any other skill (especially throws) WILL result into firing the ground so… first FIX then I’ll accept a nerf.
LOL it’s gotten to the point where engineers are so desperate for fixes they are willing to trade nerfs for them.
Things are pretty grim.
Only an engineer, don’t worry.
I’ll keep playing Engineer till it’s not fun any more, then I’ll stop.
Unfortunately with the nerfs to various bits and pieces (not grenades, I’ve never used them as I don’t want to risk aggravating my RSI) the areas in which I am having fun as an Engineer are becoming fewer and fewer.
Exactly, while you are having fun playing your engineer – keep playing it.
Saying that though, that is likely the reason engineer is one of the lowest played classes.
God only knows but I would love a response too.
I’m hoping we won’t have the history we’ve had so far with this class.
- someone fixes something on the class
- it accidently works and does decent damage
- they tested it on a dummy that stands still and doesn’t dodge
- they nerf all kits because of it to “balance” pvp
- they get the coding wrong and it further break pve
- they release the patch, giving us some reason why the nerf is there, meanwhile 80% of the engineering players must spend enormous amounts of gold to completely respec because the 1 spec that was working is now gone.
That’s been my experience with their testing department handling this class.
Honestly, could not put it in better words. Perfect answer.
Another one of my pvp friends rerolled to a mesmer today [*], i wonder how much longer will the persistent pvp engineers stay, since lately everyone with common sense is rerolling ^
I don’t think I ever ran into a good TPvP team that used an engineer post fractals patch. I think people realised that although the knockbacks are pretty cool, guardians and eles make far better bunkers.
I wish they would make it look more intimidating so I can keep convincing my fractal groups I’m pulling my weight.
Like, a bigger or brighter flame? Maybe #2 can be a huge explosion like commando’s nuke turret in borderlands. Can keep the same effect I don’t care I just want to keep getting carried while using obsolete kits.
That would make me feel much better.
My engineer is so bad he has an effective melee range yet half his skills knock his target away.
Commando looked like it had more balance and less RNG from the preview, would rather have it TBH
Im just afraid about discussion on AOE nerf. Do we even have single target skills? (rifle yeh good as good can be, pistol dont count singletarget) Most kits are aoe, toolbar is more aoe when prypar hits everything around you. Well, I dont think they touch those or we going to be very intresting class with rifle and turrets that do nothing.
But we can hipfire sniper rifles with silencers like a boss, looks pretty sexy. And the turrets look intimidating as well.
I don’t think the combat is the games weakest point, but I honestly thought Anet was joking when they said they were planning to make Gw2 a E-Sport :/
Honestly can’t see it happening with how the classes are right now.Games that are in E-sports are run by teams that specifically focus on balancing classes/characters/items and etc…. But gw2 is a MMO it’s design team will be and should be focusing on content updates, it also has a massive amount of RNG in it’s combat system (which really pulls the string on the E-sport potential to be honest).
Yeah, combat isn’t this game’s weakest point – it’s not that bad.
And yeah, something happened between development and where we are now to the design philosophy behind this game, if you are going to market a game as an esport it should have deep combat and/or teamplay, lots of polish, be easy to pick up but hard to master as well as competitive PvP with spectator value.
This game has arguably none of these aspects.
WvW was meant as a casual side activity, not the main part of the game. If it was polished, fun and competitive with leaderboards and character/guild progression I might actually agree with you. aka DAoC with a better engine.
Reminds me of a bad version of wintergrasp at the moment.
GW2
bad combat check.
bad story check.
bad pvp check.
no GvG check.
and the list go on.
4/10
Yep.
Tried to be too ambitious and please everybody.
@Developers: Pick a target audience, make a game they will enjoy, profit.
Do not make a mediocre game for everybody you will have very few fans or long term customers.
It’s to stop people mass farming in Orr, I don’t even understand how AoE in general is “OP” in anything else aside from when you are fighting masses of targets… the point of AoE.
ANet’s balancing logic works in miraculous ways my mind cannot grasp.
My engineer is so bad he replaced his goods with a battering ram.
I am honestly surprised people are still trying to be competitive with their engineers.
The class is fun and that is literally its only strong point right now.
Being loyal to this class if you can’t handle being sub-par is a recipe for frustration, ANet has 2 people working on class balance and engineers are a tiny minority of the playerbase – if the fixes to the bugs and under-powered skills come, they won’t come any time soon.
Only an engineer would fire torpedoes out of a harpoon gun.
Only an engineer would miss a target at point blank range with a flamethrower.
Only an engineer could throw a grenade further than he can shoot.
Why in Sam Adams did my post get deleted…
Yeah they did it to mine as well lol, no infraction or anything.
I predict some much needed underwater bug fixes.
I bet you can get any ranks they add by hiding in a zerg. They’ll mean nothing. Calling it now.
This. I hope they do it right but let’s be realistic, this game is much more accessible than DAoC and forcing people to work as a group or have enough skills to solo would be unthinkable.
Odd, if its giving an error code then they will likely know whats causing it, that’s the whole point of error codes.
If they aren’t responding it would indicate they have no way of fixing it.
Wow, you guy’s never stop amaze me! It’s amazing what you can find worth whining over! To think A-net would dare to create these sort of weapon kit’s that can be used in very limited area’s and your stuck on using cause you can swap!
Bring the forks and torches everyone! Gather the townsfolk! We must storm A-net and burn the heretic employees in our righteous flames for this evil deeds!
Come on guy’s, get serious! Use your energy on something worthwhile!
LIKE NERFING THE HERETIC ENGINEERS TO OBLIVION.
So basically like before, except worse.
Welcome back.
Jump Shot is one of the best skills for engineers, even if you don’t like the delay before smashing. It gives you the ability to be mobile in ways other classes can’t, it spikes like a boss and it’s even nice enough to apply vulnerability. THAT is how skills should be. Skills should ADD possibilities and be used in MULTIPLE ways. THAT is versatility. Versatility is not “Hey look I have 65 million skills”, it’s “Hey I can use this one skill 65 million ways”. THAT is what engineer should be. Utilizing one skill in multiple ways, rather than having an army of skills (Ele) that we spam.
In pvp that delay makes it virtually worthless. Offensively, it makes it almost impossible to hit a target that isn’t somehow mezzed or immobilized. Defensively, it makes a skill that could be a real life saver when you’re being zerged and need to down someone quickly an utter fail. There have been so many times when I’ve been killed while hanging there like an idiot…I seldom even try to use the power to be honest. There are many teleportation powers/gap closers in the game and this one is the only one that has such a lousy drawback. It’s one of the many issues of an engi that seems punitive for no apparent reason.
It’s still an extremely good sbility that can be used in multiple ways and takes some skill from enemies to avoid, and skill by the user to fully connect.
Just use Net Shot before you connect. Or use overcharged shot and hit them while they’re down. Or use some form of cripple.
I agree that it’s unnecessarily long and could use tweaking, but that doesn’t break the skill.
You really overestimate the damage it does, its ok for gap closing and that’s about it.
Jump Shot: 1044 damage
Kill Shot: 1276 damage
And the 3 auto attacks you could do in the time it takes you perform this clunky feat of acrobatics?
Also thats odd, because I have seen kill shots hit for far harder than anything jump shot can produce.
Yeah I’m pretty kitten sure a 3 bar KS has a higher base damage than that. I have never seen a jump shot over 7k let alone 10k-15k
(edited by nofo.8469)
man i kittening love russians.
good post though OP agree 100%

Lovely combo for engineer.
Magnetic pull+prybar+overcharged shot+net shot+jumpshot+net attack+rocket kick.
And if you’re a high damage engineer then glass cannons are screwed and even bunkers will start to worry. Not to mention you can just plonk down a net turret for 3 more nets and keep hitting. Or deliver a blunderbuss. This combo will not make a bunker worry… lol.
The only decent damage from that combo is prybar and blunderbuss, the rest do pretty bad damage and a bunker probably wouldn’t even notice their health bar drop.
It would probably kill a glass cannon though if they gave you the 10s you needed to pull this combo off.
Looks cool though I’ll give it that.
Well, since they are constantly on their kitten or netted up I think the time is there lol.
As for bunkers, armor does zero vs conditions – Funny fact, confusion works through “Endure pain” ^^
Fun fact, if you tried this on a bunker guardian he could stand still and it would take you a minute+ to kill him. If you aren’t glass cannon you probably wouldn’t kill him. Ever. Even if you were it would take you awhile.
Relying on confusion to kill people works in WvW because your opponents tend to be… bad.
Try killing a competent bunker with this combo though, they can outheal your DPS even if you don’t focus on knocking them around like a pingpong ball (when stability is down)
(edited by nofo.8469)
Scepter/staff ele, engineer
God no.
This would be stupidly hard to balance, and knowing ANet they will just smack down a 30% nerf to all kits to compensate for versatility and call it a day.
Just get to 80 then people won’t kick you.
A lvl 80 does far more for their group than your lvl 30 would, why would a group leader purposely cripple their group unless you were a friend or something?
I would run things like AC explore with lvl 30’s from the guild all the time, but if I was making a pug? Not a chance.
Grind is a matter of personal opinion.
If you want your character to be the best he has to be, you have to do fractals and level to 80 using dynamic events and heart.s
If you enjoy doing these activities, it is not a grind, it is an addiction.
if you do not, then yes – you are grinding.
Most themepark MMO’s want their players to be addicted, it is in my personal opinion ANet has missed that mark by quite a large margin with this game.
Gw1 was truly unique. It was not an mmo though. This is an mmo. Hence why its most massively annoying
GW was a great game. GW2 is a poorly designed MMO. They took GW lore and made a game for Ben 10/Barbie audience, dumbing down the game, removing the possibility to make builds (you have like 2 dozens of skills to chose from), removing customer support and copying stuff from other mmos. Copying is ok, but they copied everything that was bad and a few things that were good.
You cant use your mesmer to kill stuff on the other side of the wall, you cant use your ranger to use terrain in a smart way… intelligence and creativity are not allowed anymore. You will never see a 55 monk or a permasin build in GW2 because the game does not allow builds. It was designed in a way a 5 years old kid is able to play. The achievement are not real challenges like the titles were. Most “builds” that could be fun are useless. I agree with OP: GW2 has an “anti-fun” design.
You can have simplistic classes and still have deep gameplay. That deep gameplay would normally stem from resource management/teamwork/positioning etc as you said.
Sadly this game has very little of it, it is definitely one of the more simplistic games I have played, but hey; it means the game is very accessible and that means wider possible customer base, hope it works out for ANet.
“Builds” aren’t the reason this game is simple though, and a lot of people don’t find depth fun, so including it would likely be “anti-fun” to them.

from what i have seen girls like seeing their characters in revealing clothing more than the guys do.
what has this world come to?
Why do straight guys want to run around as a bulging, rippled He-Man? It’s an ideal I guess. In some cases, it’s what we would like to be. It’s fantasy.
Yeah, but what about those that play female characters? You would expect their fantasy would involve more revealing clothing.
from what i have seen girls like seeing their characters in revealing clothing more than the guys do.
what has this world come to?
Can you? Yeah.
Will you? Unlikely.
Yeah.
Whoever you are mysterious lover, I know you are out there.
I LOVE YOU TOO
Nope.
Neither myself or anyone I started playing this game with played gw1 much.
0 on today.

Frankly i am shocked by the responses happening in the forums. Everyone is going crazy, moaning about endgame or WvW or Spvp.
Game has been out since August. Give it time. YOUR NOT PAYING A SUB!!!!, just come back once they started adding in new features.
Take WoW for instance.
At launch it had nothing compared to what it has now. It didn’t even have PvP at launch.
You can’t compare an mmo of several years ago to an mmo now. GW2 has to compete with WOW in its current incarnation.
As for giving them time if TESO was out or Bioware had improved swtor or possibly even if Darkfall2 had released I wouldn’t be playing GW2 now. They are lucky that they’re in a spot without all that much competition. MMOs devs no matter if they’re free to play or not need to be more agile in responding to issues. or teh market will move, it happened with swtor.
As for the criticism itself arenanet has largely dug a hole for itself.
Exactly this, to people saying that you can’t compare a few month old MMO with one that has been staple for many years would be very true if this were a fair world.
It is no such thing, when you release a product you are immediately competing with everything that shares the same target audience you do. Initially this wasn’t a problem for the game because it was different in many regards, but the moment it tried to grab WoW’s market share it started to get compared to it.
I dont think Dradiin gets it.
Its that thing that World of Warcraft has. I call it the “it” factor. In WoW, when you swing your sword, turn the camera, hit another player, it is instant, the sound matches the animation and everything else. There is something about it that meshes perfectly. The map has a nice “click” sound when you open it. All of these little tiny things add up and I truly believe effect your brain. Blizzard did their research.
My main issue is that the camera turns a split second after you turn your character. Go ahead, fire up most MMOs. See how you can move your character around? Watch how he turns. Now log back into GW2. When you walk and turn the camera there is this tiny delay. It may not be noticeable for all, but its there.
Yeah it’s the first thing I noticed when I played this game as well. It doesn’t have the responsiveness that WoW has, I got over it pretty quickly because at the time, this game was trying to make its own mark on the MMO market rather than compete with WoW.
But things have changed obviously, the lack of polish this game has isn’t limited to bugs and content, its apparent with the engine itself.
All game forums are full of negativity, because the people having fun ( 90% ) are playing.
Not to this degree. People are jaded for a reason.
1) Good bunker eles are nigh impossible to kill 1v1.
Why? Because you say so?
2) You have more stability than most the classes in this game, and iirc mesmer has none.
yeah…tell me wich….armor of earth (<=== see CD) and…..?
Also stun break…mesmer has plenty……3) Why are you using a weapon that your build is bad at in the first place.
because as i said good players doent simply faceroll on keyboard but use terrain as an advantage expecially in WWW.
If you solo 1VS1 in openfuield with a non dueler class against a class that does only one thing (i.e. close range duels)….there is your problem.
It’s overpowered, and I play one! And the OP is in the same boat. The D/D techniques are predictable (((Be on lightning attunement—>initiate combat—>4, 5—>F1, 3, 4, (sometime’s followed with 2 and 5)—>F4, 4, 5—?repeat))).
no you dont….
Most decent (not even good) players can avoid RTL…
If they don t, they have plenty of time to use a stunbreak…
If they don t, ele TANK has still to deal withat least half of your energy
You still don t react?
Are you afk?also why don t u use combos?
combining attack of a glasscannon ele with defence of a tank ele is indeed OP…….unfortunately i cannot put 200 points in my traits, possibly good ele players can…..
it seems this discussion is the usual rant against fotm class…..i’ll just proved how wrong it is….and i’ll leave it alone .-.
1) From my experiences in playing bunker ele in TPvP
2) Stun break != stability. How much stability does a thief have? engineer? necro? mesmer? I’m sure you get the idea.
3) So you’re complaining that because you are a good player, you use bad weapons for your spec? wow.
Treehern with his mighty sword saladbowel didn’t strike me as the leader type. In fact he seemed like such a beta male I don’t know how he managed to stay alive in Tyria at all.
Really bad characterisation.
