Two glass cannon specialized classes wearing berserker gear are about to enter a grassland plain and fight to the death.
The Mesmer is concentrated on single dps and buffs his phantasms wherever possible without sacrificing damage from himself. He uses mantras and he is not a shatter build.
(30/30/0/0/10)The Ranger is concentrated on single target dps as well choosing to buff his own dps over his pets, but traits to support the pet wherever a sacrifice of his own dps would not occur.
(30/30/0/0/10)Rules:
Vote for which class you think would win and add why if possible.Do NOT talk about condition builds, Trap builds, or Shatter builds, just what you think would make the classes more even in this 1v1 to the death (such as buffs, trait/skill/ability here or add something) and/or why they are not even now.
Now have at it!
Mesmer. Don’t even run numbers. Just, mesmer.
EPIC thread, this. Just about sums up the forums in it’s entirety.
Lolz
I’m not sure the op was a troll, but the discussion is fairly pointless.
To me, it feels like people need to have ’’reasons’’ for everything, which, in my opinion, is what makes most MMOs dull, and I’m glad ArenaNet took a different approach with Guild Wars 2.
Everything must have some kind of reason it seems, nothing can be spontaneous.
If you can’t find a reason to buy Cultural Tier 3, then don’t buy it. If you can’t find a reason to do Jumping Puzzles, then don’t do them. If you can’t find a reason for this or that, simply leave it alone.
Everything don’t need to have a reason, I love when things are spontaneous. I saw Twilight/Sunrise preview leak before the Guild Wars 2 release, I said to myself ‘’I will get that weapon no matter what.’’ And guess what? I don’t have it, when I saw what ir required to get it, I ignored it, and left it alone to other people.
I then saw Logan Thackeray’s armour, and said to myself, I will get it no matter what, and guess what? I found the vendor, and farmed the kitten out of Orr, I bought the armour, and I couldn’t care less about it’s stats or coloured named, I wanted it no matter what, and I got it.
That’s the spirit!
As the title suggests, Im just wondering what the point of the exorbitant cost of cultural armors is?
I mean the skins are nice enough, but they are only “rare” quality. Im not about to spend 50+ gold to get a set of armor thats underpowered compared to karma exo gear or TP stuff. Im serious, what is the point of the high cost? Skin alone? If so make it Exotic, and worth the money. Right now, its completely pointless to spend the gold on them since the gear is rare only especially when I can get exotic armor for 40k or so karma a piece ,or spend a one or two gold in TP or even just use exo dungeon gear.
T3 Cultural armors – waste of time and money.
Because they’re third tier.
Judging by some posts, I think this is some people’s first MMO since they’re so shocked by prices and lengths of time it took to achieve things.
Whether you like the design or not, they’re status symbols, basically.
Seriously I’m going to have to stop here before I get myself infracted or something… not to mention I still have to do my dailies if I want that laurel and coin.
You just made me laugh out loud. Excellent.
Anyway, I see daily’s like getting my chores done before I can go play. I often do not enjoy them. I do it to get my laurel. I do enjoy the rest of the game (esp. WvW).
I can also realize that daily’s are a form of manipulation. So I think that if there is a way to get the good aspects of daily’s (such as time gating to slow the inevitable gear grind) while limiting the downsides (some people feel left out.) the player community should be behind it.
For the record, ArenaNet has done a great job with the new daily system. They are much less onerous than they were previously.
People are going to feel left out no matter what though. I remember my first mmo and when I realized the sheer amount of time it would take to get the thing I wanted. (non default clothes.) This was RAN online though, and that was a free korean game with a MONSTER sized grind.
I suppose if you want to look at it as a chore, you can, but then it will for sure feel like one.
Seriously I’m going to have to stop here before I get myself infracted or something… not to mention I still have to do my dailies if I want that laurel and coin.
Daily’s serve two purposes. First is to time gate access to ascended items. That is, to make sure that it takes a certain amount of time to obtain them. Second, they train us to log in everyday. Push the button and get your seed pellet.
The former has some merit. But no gamer should be defending the later.
To go a step further. Any solution that satisfies the time gating requirement while lessening the “YOU MUST LOG IN EVERY DAY AND DO RANDOM STUFF” part, if a better solution than what we have now.
How about they have a bot play the game for you and they can email you pictures of your character as you progress and you’ll even get a personalized letter from your character, and all it will cost you is the cost of a cup of coffee a day!

Ok, if you look at it as pushing the button and getting a pellet, you’re pretty much doing video games wrong and you need a new hobby altogether.
If you want laurels, log in and spend 20 minutes doing some stuff you’d be doing anyway during the course of normal play. If you can’t, well then tough… you miss out.
You people are absolutely maddening.
toasts and cheers all about.
Really if it’s THAT much of a problem, let the dailies accumulate for 3 days, instead of 1. 3 is plenty… but i’m sure that would be a good chunk of time spent rewriting code. =/
There are easy solutions to this issue, some require extra server resources per account and some do not.
One possible solution requiring additional server resources would be to implement a daily counter for each account which increments at the reset time and decrements when a set of daily requirements is finished. As long as the counter is greater than zero after the decrement a new set of dailies would then appear. This new set could be randomly generated or repeat the current daily set. The daily counter could be set to one at the beginning of the month reset or just incremented if it is desired to let a player “catch up” on prior month dailies.
Another solution, similar to the first but not requiring a daily counter per account, would be to use the mail system to send a consumable “daily token” each day at the reset time that would start the daily when used. Multiple “daily token” items could be used per day. The “daily token” items would stack to minimize inventory space. This solution has the drawback of sending mail everyday to every account. The limit on the amount of unread mail per account is also an issue that would “gate” those not able to login often enough to retrieve the “daily token” item from mail. A new type of “daily token” could be generated each month if it is desired to limit the usable accumulation to the current month.
Oh good lord. This sounds overly complicated, and the word “solution” indicates there is a problem.
If unread mail capacity is going to be a problem with this token idea, then double tough luck. Why should anet jump through all these hoops writing all new ridiculous code for a few people with strange hours, just so they can feel like they’re being treated fairly?
Some people are born in countries with no food or running water, and certainly no video games, so this kind of whining about equal laurel pay for equal time is completely selfish and childish.
How is this a counter argument to proposing reasonable and potentially attainable change in a game? Will the effort that go into game suggestion and design take away from the effort towards improving the living conditions of those you mentioned?
What’s reasonable about “I can’t be online all the time so the game should change for my sake”?
Maybe someone should be more thankful they can play video games in their leisure time which exists, and complain less about “the daily loot” they can’t get.
Same as Ceraphyn but everything opposite.
Feel free to go play Diablo 3 and see how good THAT game is working out a year after release.
It’s probably bad form to rag on them here, but honestly I don’t think they have their game deving stuff together nearly as much as Anet. I played that for a bit before GW2 came out and I only played it like a couple weeks, and I wish I saved my $60.
I wanted to sincerely thank the developers of this amazing game for their hard work and authentic commitment…
Yeah really. Any complaints I DO have are trumped by what an great game it is overall.
The only other games I can say I probably played as long as GW1 and now also 2, would be the entire GTA series collectively, and the Unreal Tournament series, but those dont’ have /age commands. LOL

I think I heard somewhere it goes right to the character select screen because the game is supposed to be about you; the player, so your toons are what you see first.
I might be wrong though.
The locking of guild mission content particularly was done so that huge guilds, which already have a huge advantage, won’t further disadvantage smaller guilds, which are already doing it tough. Anet said that directly and it makes sense.
A large guild could burn through everything and then get everything all at once. As it stands now, medium size guilds won’t get completely outclassed by large guilds.
I think it’s a good move.
As for laurels and dailies, nothing is gated, because the only thing you need ascended gear for is the higher levels of the fractals and you can get enough gear from the fractals to keep doing it. It’s self-perpetuating.
For everyone else, ascended gear is a luxury item, not a necessity. It doesn’t gate anything. I have one piece of ascended gear so far and I can play pretty much the entire game, except the highest levels of the fractals.
I don’t even have full exotic and I can breeze through tons of stuff, dungeon permitting as I have to learn the patterns and that still. People just have that mindset that gear>skill.
Equal time played, equal effort, much less payback when it comes to laurels. Arguements centered around the ‘need’ for laurels, or how you will get them ‘eventually’ are completely moot.
This isn’t some job where you get paid in laurels. It’s a game. If you can’t keep up with the laurels, then that is entirely tough luck.
Some people are born in countries with no food or running water, and certainly no video games, so this kind of whining about equal laurel pay for equal time is completely selfish and childish.
And don’t even talk about blizzard. I just came back from the D3 forums and they’re sitting around trying to figure out how to make rare items powerful and appealing to the player, a full year after release.

Seriously. this game is going to be around for years. There’s plenty of time to farm laurels.
seriously , some peoples just need to maximize and be more efficient while they play
i play 1.5hr – 2hr a day and i can do easily the daily …yesterday i played 2:30Hrs :
- I played the TP mini game a bit
- Finished at least 6 daily task .. so is more than requirement
- Tequalt , Jormag , fire elemental + one Maw event
- Eternal Battleground jumping puzzle 2 times ( 2 toons )
- Enough WvWvW battle to earn 30 Badges of honor with a rangeroh and my March monthly is already done at 100% and with my guild we have completed one bounty mission already ( 2 guild commendation ) …… so matbe today ill just do my daily in 20 minutes and relax
Yeah. sometimes I mess around and waste a ton of time, other times I manage just just machine gun progress out. Depends on the day and on my focus.
All these people asking to buy their way or other such fast tracks to ascended gear and God know what else, it’s like asking to buy your medical degree.
I know progress in GW2 is nothing like a degree, but either way, you have to work for it. All this buying this and that is dumb, and by making something available for purchase via real money devalues whatever items are in question.
Seriously. this game is going to be around for years. There’s plenty of time to farm laurels.
The mask isn’t new. My guardian had been using it since day 1.
Though if they add more variety to headgears it’ll be nice. More intricate ornaments instead of helmets for heavy, masks for light.. my Mesmer still uses the necro starter face markings and I found no better substitude. Really disappointed about headgears in game.
What they need to do is scrap the “town clothes” idea and make the special costume helms available for all professions. It mystifies me why they haven’t done this already – they’d see a huge spike in gem sales if they let us actually use the things in the store that their artists worked so hard on.
We had a costume system in Guild Wars 1, and I don’t recall any major complaints about it. They’re already barred from sPvP anyway, which is the only community that I can think of that would really complain about more cosmetic items. If Valve has taught the world anything, it’s that more cosmetic options are NEVER a bad thing, and that classes can still be easily recognized even with silly things on their heads.
Yeah the costume over your armor system in gw1 was fantastic…. as was conjuring up another copy of any costume for mere pennies, thus saving all that inventory space. I dunno why that second part isn’t implemented at all either.
Guys, guys. You fell for the troll. This shouldn’t have even made it to two pages let alone three posts.
I’m still debating on whether or not this is a troll. Usually a troll would have responded.
Tbh there good when your lvling up,as you can hide the ugly weapons and armour with them ones.
but once you hit 80 you would never use them again as you get better looking weapons/armour by then.So imo there not that important once you hit 80.
Nah, I still use my fiery sword at 80. It’s one of the best skins in the game. I might still continue using the staff one on my necro….haven’t decided yet.
The staff is nice too, it’s got a little animation on it and it’s better than the default staff appearance imo.

Fiery Dragon Swords are ALWAYS important, along with Icy, and there’s no vampiric dragon sword in GW2 as far as I know, but that one is the most important of the three!
Wait? did the OP just complain they have added stuff to HoM. LoL. Everything that is in the HoM has been there SINCE BETA!. Nothing new has been added, nothing has beem updated. HoM is the exact same as it has been since its release. The skins are ok, but honestly for a big time gw1 player it was a bit of and insult walking back into the HoM and seeing everything ruined and destroyed.
Yeah, and seeing Artificer Mullenix there still. =/
Limiting loot acquisition or loot nerfing is a bad idea.
No it isn’t. Being able to do the events on your own server and receive the loot chest is fine.
There is no reason to allow guesting leechers to ruin players experiences on their home server.
I don’t know anyone who uses guesting anyway to play with friends. The only thing I hear it being used for is to farm other servers for ore, chests and berries.
I played with friends via guesting.
You go out of Droks in GW1 and you find more challenge that what you can find in any zone of GW2.
Yeah is it just me, or do the dungeons seem to have the same level of difficulty that missions did towards the end of any gw1 campaign?
I don’t know the patterns well enough to be good at the gw2 dungeons yet, but aside from them and the jumping puzzles, this game is a breeeeeze, especially compared to the first game.
It’s ok though, i’m older and have less time to invest so that’s cool I suppose.
obviously this is a sequel to the original(duh) where guilds were formed to vie for power in the political system, or so the wiki says. so my question is, and don’t get me wrong i love the game, why does a game called guild wars 2 not have…guild wars?
they were over before the first game even started according to the time line.
I play necro i went to wvw figured hey condition dmg is pretty much useless ( barely any tokens ), starts hitting on gate ohh right condition dmg is no good vs objects.
But i could spec power and i did and yeah its not that great on a necro no real ranged power option and staff 1 is so slow ppl outrun it or it just miss or get obstructed etc.
Culling issues.
So i put the wvw on hold untill i feel its worth draggin my necro to
Yeah those aren’t your only options, but sure.
If people are not having fun in WVW, you’re doing it wrong.
Oh sorry sir, please educate me as to how to spend my free time correctly! I will take detailed notes on what I should find entertainment in and endeavor to implement any suggestions post haste!
Yes, because I was addressing you specifically.
However, now that you mention it…
“There are a lot of places where this game sacrifices fun to prevent some kind of adverse effect. Sacrificing fun for any reason in a game is always a bad design decision and indicative of a quick fix mentality.
Fortunately, regular overworld pve is not one of those places:)”
I have no idea how you reached that conclusion, but it sure is RIDICULOUS.
(edited by ophidic.1279)
As has already been mentioned, rabbits in Australia are a menace beyond comprehension.
Rabbits while cute; are a bigger pest than rats IMO. As long as you kill them quickly; kill more. (luckily you can’t help but kill them quickly in GW2 – death animations not withstanding)
I remember hearing about there being a large population of Koala bears too that needed to be … ahem… controlled. =)
That was a while ago now, but I heard it was somewhat serious.
3.) wvw benefits your dungeon runs, do you not agree that helping us get the buffs you benefit from is the right thing to do?
Warning: Bad Analogy Incoming…
My local police department benefits me too, but that doesn’t quit my job and enroll in police academy.
Yeah that quote there is kind of BS. I don’t owe anyone anything, and I go to WvW when I feel like it.
If people are not having fun in WVW, you’re doing it wrong.
Yeah exactly that. I earned my fiery dragon sword and icy dragon sword in gw1, and i’m glad that not everyone can just have it because they feel they should get one too.
I know it’s not much of a big deal anymore, but it’s nice to carry it and remember when it WAS a big deal to have, plus the light radius is kinda nice in caves sometimes.
You lost me at “I am punished for trying to challenge myself”. Seriously? Isn’t that the point of a challenge?
Obviously someone is not up to the challenge!
This is as bad as people complaining that dailies are “too hard” or take too long.
Why? Took me a few months to unlock them in gw1 I got it because I wanted them unlocked in this game like many many people did.
Also you can still unlock them if you really really want it. The mask is not hard to get unlocked.
Exactly my point. Why should I play a few months on a game that I do not enjoy to have something on an entirely different game that I want? That is not the correct way my friend.
Because you want it. You obviously do not want it that badly.
I want jormag’s breath, but I don’t feel like farming corrupted lodestones… should I still be able to get Jormag’s breath? Should there be some “workaround” because I don’t feel like farming stones?

The wiki says for GW1 players of “Eye of the North”. I played the original guild wars, and one expansion “Factions”. Does this mean i cannot get the Halls of Monuments items?
Yeah, the hall of monuments is in eye of the north, which is in the eye of the north expansion.
I find it challenging, often frustrating, but I feel the game SHOULD be challenging. I’m not a critter hunter, walking around forests with my .22, plinking rabbits and squirrels. I am an adventurer, travelling into a dangerous and untamed world with a sword, a shield and some courage.
I don’t want enemies nicely lining themselves up in a row for me to shoot/stab like some console game. I want to walk softly and carry a very big stick because I am outside the safety of my fortified city.
This isn’t Duck Hunt. And one does not simply walk into Mord-Orr. One runs, with bloodthirsty beasts at his back and worse ahead. He uses his wits, his skills and his blades to survive. That’s how it should be!
Yeah exactly, and if you know what you’re doing, it’s not all that difficult to take on large groups of mobs.
If everyone needs to have absolutely everything handed to them, there’s no game anymore.
Seriously. I hate jumping puzzles and dungeons, but even those aren’t really all that hard when you break it down.
It’s not really all that hard to fight a veteran and some other mobs solo. Use aoe to hit them all?
Mobs respawn too fast in this game.
I am punished for exploring, because the quick respawn means fighting my way both into and out of every area, especially caves and fortresses.
I am punished for trying to challenge myself and access difficult areas, because I simply can’t kill the mobs fast enough to proceed before the first ones respawn and aggro.
I am punished for killing veterans, because the normal mobs around it respawn before I can kill it.
I am punished for using dodges and kiting in combat, because I am much more likely to aggro the respawns behind me.
A few months ago a dev posted that the base respawn rate is something like 90-120 seconds. This is simply too fast for a solo player.
Mobs should have a dynamic respawn timer that checks the number of players in the area. At the very least, the amount of time should be increased significantly for leveling zones beyond the starter zones. These zones are often deserted on my realm. No one needs the mobs to respawn so quickly there.
The timer ruins immersion and makes me reluctant to explore all the amazing areas that the designers created. It makes every area feel like a grind instead of an adventure. This game is extremely well done, but the timer sours my experience in every play session. Please change it.
That’s not too fast. Adapt.
I don’t think there’s a single snake in this entire place.
I’m sure nobody would intentionally kill somebody’s beloved pet, which is what you’re implying
If only that where true.
I deal with a number of rabbit rescues around the world, what I have seen tells a far different story. And almost none of them, if any, are connected in any way to gw2.
And your point? I will not kill the in game rabbits. If you have a problem with that, it’s YOUR problem. You can play anyway you want. I don’t know you, don’t play with you, so who cares? I will play the way I want (which is not at all currently) and it’s actually rather odd that you seem to care so much how I play? I wonder, can you explain how a complete stranger not wanted to kill an animated animal that I see as a pet in an online game effects you in any way, shape or form?
I think the point is…why are you till posting here and of all things on this subject?
Not to get off topic now, but since I stopped playing, I am no longer allowed to read or post in the forums? You can’t answer my question, so you try to take it off topic? Get lost troll.
If you’re not even faced with the choice whether or not to kill the rabbits, because you quit playing, who are you to sit here and complain about it as if it affects you at all in the least?
Why don’t you go on a Red Dead Redemption forum and complain about all the animal skinning that goes on in that game?
That’s the new Daily for you. Always pushing players to do things that don’t fit in with their desired play style.
Actually you get to choose from 9, so your statement is false.
…. should be removed.
Yes its just a pixels and 95% of guild wars population wont become animal abusers because of that but we have children playing here. Proposing that bashing rabbits or kitties to death is rewardable ( which is what anet is suggesting here ) is wrong and i bet in some form – illegal.
Yes yes this is a game but we have too much violence in games already, why add more?
Give me a break. Pick a different daily then.
Any care to tell me where the fire that just killed me came from?
There are 2 jets pointed away from me in either direction, and I magically caught on fire while standing in that EXACT position trying to watch the jet pattern.
Is it me, or are these jumping puzzles intentionally cruel? They sure feel that way.
…all I had to think about was what I wanted to wear and how I wanted to build my next alt.?
OMG pls don’t complain about there being too much to do. If you want a barren boring game with nothing to do after a week in there’s always Diablo 3.
Life is busy. So is a proper MMORPG. You can’t do everything, and not all at once.
