Ok i know that shortbow has good dps but it doesnt have a big effect in a PvP team / multiple mobs figth while double axes can bring both AoE and some interesting stuff like proyectile reflection, chill, weakness and most importantly, a possible 5 traget pull every 15 seconds which is really good in stomps / rezz and etc.
Also i must use a weapon with mobility (melee), so i cant have a shortbow as secondary.
AND
You dont need a single trait to do this only the 20% cooldown reduction and +10% critical damage which can be skipped without great diference.

Just as the first sb nerf, It’s the best thing for the class. The ranger class made great progress after the sb nerf. Yes the short bow is use alot by rangers. In fact it’s over used. It really made no sense for a long bow and the sb to have the same distance it’s inherent in thier names. The short bow has been given a range reduction but a boost in damage.
Ranger are still able to kill at range in fact they can kill faster now. If you were using the short bow at a range of 1000 + you were doing less damage then if you used the Lb.
Rangers have been given a bad name because they auto attack to win. It isnt the most effective use of the class and just plan lazy. Now you are force to really consider your weapons option. It’s best for the class as a whole.
We made great builts after the first sb nerf and I am sure we will make even more with this nerf/buff.
Rangers are still unparalled archers more so now than ever.

Oh, it’s totally refutable. Unparalleled means unmatched. And Rangers are unmatched in archery because they are the only class that uses both bow types, and each type has a different role and skill-set, giving rangers greater tactical options with bows than any other class has by far. Damage is a matter of build.
That’s how you “interpreted” it, but try to make everyone that wanted to play a range class that’s good with bows into your twisted version.
Pretty much in the title. But if you can’t figure out what I’m trying to convey by that then just know that “Ranger” isn’t in reference to the word range. A ranger is a woodsman, outdoorsman, or someone who acts to protect the wild.
Just figured I’d post this. It’s annoying reading the forums and seeing people say that we should be the longest range or best range class when to justify how they think the ranger should be played.

Thing is we have some darn powerful builds right now, as we speak rangers are steamrolling players and dominating 1vX.
All day yesterday I did not lose a 1v1 and I spent hours going up against each and every build one by one they died. 1v2 I liked my chances but against good players I had to get away or find water.

Shortbow is almost as powerful as sword, pierces, and stacks insane might on pet with companion’s might and berserker now with the huge buff to companions might. Arguably, in dungeons and wvw, shortbow just got a lot better. In pvp it is a nerf because people were pressuring points from 1200 inches with a psuedo-melee weapon. Come on, that’s not too strong? Everyone and their mom used shortbow until yesterday because of it’s ridiculous range. It should have been nerfed a long time ago.Btw warrior is awful at range. Ranger is much stronger. Source: I have character slots for every profession and test them in the mists.

To the players that are upset about the SB change. I am sorry but this change was a long time coming and it is not the end of the world. I really think many of our fellow Rangers have been over reacting and have not tried to deal with these balance changes.

What would you expect from a Ranger? A balance between strong ranged skills and low survive at melee right? Why can´t you keep it as simple as that? Have you ever seen, in the hole history of humanity (or fantasy), an archer with a greatsword at his back and no range? I know its a fantasy game but there are limits to be respected for consistency. At the moment we have rangers with greatswords, low dps, and no range. We relly half of our dps in a pet that can´t hit moving targets, can´t dodge, and dies in seconds.
It should be a hard class to master rather than a warrior. I don´t expect to resist a hammer blow. If i am in that situation i am dead and its ok, blame me! but make me deadly from afar.I´ve been a dev for about a decade now and i know how frustrating can be to get this kind of feedback from the ppl you want to satisfy. But honestly, what is a ranger in GW2? A warrior in medium armor shooting unicorns and rainbows? Come on, just tell us you don´t like them so we can pick another class or choose another game.
The class is called ‘Ranger’, not ‘Archer’. What you’re describing is an archer (which you admit to in your own post), making your entire ‘point’ moot. One of the accepted definitions of a ranger (as in, what’s in an actual dictionary): “A person who ranges or roves”. Going by that, a highly mobile, melee build—which is accessible to us—is more in the spirit of a ‘Ranger’ than a stationary bow-wielding build.
I am getting really tired of this ridiculous “It’s ’range’r not ’melee’r!” argument. It is laughable.

However, if it’s not the case of ill will, then I can’t help but start having doubts regarding competences and consistency of some people working on the development team, as well as whether they have any general idea what they want the ranger to be.
look, anyone works in a programming related field should know the importance of having a test server (or in my web development job, a QA/staging server to test codes before push them live), but up until now, Anet still doesn’t have one. Doesn’t that show the competence level of the developers and the team managing the game? How many times have they patch something and end up breaking something else?
I wanted to be a ranged expert. The wvw videos I’m watching with Ranger many people use a Lb/gs. What nerfed the Ranger so badly that Longbow is no longer a viable option? Looking through the forums there’s no way a game company could obliviously make one class so bad people are jumping ship on it like this. Surely there’s something the Ranger does well at 80?
the ranger class is defined by ANet as a range damage specialist, yet we just got hit with a nerf on shortbow. That tells you how much you need to know about Anet’s vision of ranger.
At level 61, I would tell you start a new class and hold off on rest of the levels, it’s just not worth it.

Moving targets in wvw:
that’s why ranger can cripple, chill, and stun all day long. That’s why we have swiftness / fortifying bond. That’s why we have guard and sick em or aignet of the hunt. There’s so many options for a faster pet. And if you don’t like those options, run a dog. Dogs have been proven to land attacks at a flat pace as opposed to cats/birds who really need speed boosts.
Dungeons:
Read up on my high level fractals build. It’s basically permanent 15+ might stacks in addition to repeated 25 might stack spikes. It’s way better than what we had before and it uses shortbow which is still one of our premier weapons. Turn that frown upside down brotha. It’s really powerful. Better than before no doubt. Sometimes a buff comes in the form of boon stacking or traits.
sorry, but the shortbow nerf was not needed, why should a class that is defined as range specialist need to suffer a penalty in range for using any range weapons that the class can use?

At this rate I expect them to admit within three years time that an AI companion class was a mistake with their vision for GW2 and preventing it from hurting their vision resulted in killing the class in the process.

My ranger is now permanently retired from WvW you cannot dps properly with a 900 range shortbow which is my main weapon of choice and for many in WvW, you have just effectively nerfed the ranger for alote of people to the point of no use, I just absolutely fail to understand what is going through your heads.

Why should this class be penalized for using any sort of range weapons? Anet just fails at getting the logic correctly in balancing classes. Why play ranger over thief? It doesnt make any sense.
We’ll probably never get a fair counter to stealth as it is Anet’s golden child. one of the devs mains a thief so they’re pretty biased on the whole balance issue.

any mesmer that played since launch can confirm that iBerserker used to crit for 5 to 6k, and nowadays you get lucky if u crit for 2 to 3k.
I got a good chance at testing it and it seems to be ok…only thing is the at times as u stated the non crit is much bigger than crit itself

I’ve been playing my ranger alt more now, and came across this bit of info on the late June patch:
As you can see, several devs commented on that being a major traits update patch for many classes. In few more weeks we will find out where we stand to see if devs really give kitten about Mesmers.
Please name another Mesmer ranged weapon option that does good damage from range.

It’s quite clear the devs have no idea what they are doing with the ranger class as a whole.
You can add few more classes to the list, just when I switch to ranger from Mesmer which they broke the GS weapon skills and now they are nerfing pet damage? Epic Fail…
anyone checked out the state of the game that just took place this week? I read on the ranger forum that pet damage is getting nerfed (lol). Just curious if anyone that participated heard anything about Mesmer related issues being looked at (or more nerf bat incoming)…
The 4 hits do not always happen if the IZerker is far away from the target it might only get 1 strike in because the animation generates 4 attacks. Saying it only hit a static target 3 times doesn’t really tell the whole story. Hundred blades or whirrlwind on great sword are similar. Each attack has a size and facing and timing and those things determine if a hit occurs.
Thanks for the update Jon, but I would urge you to check up on the iZerker again as multiple people have confirmed that something went wrong with it after the 26th of february patch.
So I would really appreciate it if you could check it out again because there’s definitely something not working as intended. And even if this behaviour was intentional (like with the Ranger SB ‘animation fix’) we would also appreciate it if you just come out and tell us instead of making stuff up as your customers are going to find out anyway (like with the Ranger SB ‘animation fix’).

As far as we know something did go wrong. We can’t reliably get it to display all of he damage floaters, but we have tried to test if the damage is lower or it just doesn’t hit and we have never seen that error I our debug setup which shows attack areas. I may try and make a bad pic tomorrow to show what I mean.

another quick fix patch, but only fixed necro and engineer bugs, lol. Anet = epic fail.

THis patch just added another bug to Mesmer GS skill, and they didnt even fix the iBersker damage they broke months ago. Test server can only help both ANet and the players calling out potential problems before something goes “live.”
avoid GS at all cost. Quite a few glaring bugs with that weapon due to Anet’s lack of attention to fix them or accidentally create new ones with every other game patch is just not worth your trouble.
I wish I can have a do over to give my Twilight GS to my ranger instead.
Ah, they’re quite ok. It’s not Blizzard-level of support, but then I imagine ANet has a way way smaller team (their issues with bugs seems a lot like they lack in the pure-numbers department). Makes sense, the game is smaller and is has no monthly fee.
But compared to say, Mythic or Sony? Much better. Don’t even get me started on Mythic, compared to that this is instant-all-bugs-fixed development. :X
having a smaller team is not a valid excuse, the biggest problem is their communication. I mean really, does it take a full team to respond to a thread? The same dev that replied to a jellyfish pet skin in the ranger forum is the same one that replied to this thread, and that got fixed two patches ago. SOme of you need to stop defending Anet. If they wanted this as a nerf, be a man and come out to state it, at least it’s a closure for most of us. But playing this no response game is just stupid.

@ztales – your first build is quite close to mine. But I’ve put your extra 400 toughness into power and precision.
I would suggest you do that, and run a mango pie for extra regen rather than 600 healing. Mango pie will give you 85hp/s which is almost as much as SotW does with 360 healing.

I tried your build variation for a week, did pretty well in WvW. However, if I want to do more with the build as in some PvE / Dungeon content, wouldnt it be better if I not go 30 in marksman but 20 instead, and put that 10 into either skirmish (Moment of Clarity) or beastmastery?
To be honest, after so long, i’m kinda giving up izerker ever getting a proper fix to its damage. Maybe just throw in the towel and remove izerker’s damage and improve on its CC. Change/Add cripple with daze/stun/chill, i don’t know. Just rename and remake it into illusionary CC-bot.

Question: Will these reward chests for ranks be given for people who already have Ranks? For example will a Rank 60 player receive 60 chests?
There will be a system for rewarding players who have already gained ranks. The way it will work is you will have a backlog of 60 chests, if you were at rank 61, and for each rank you achieve after that you will get 2 chests, instead of 1, until you’ve received all 60 of your backlog. These bonus chests should be available for every player who has gained rank prior to the build.
So being rank 158 I wont get all my chests until I get rank 315??
So what if it takes you this long to get all your BACKLOGGED chests. its not like your missing out on anything, or your time was wasted. Now if it took longer to get each level then i could see your concern, but it doesn’t each level after 5 is 5000 Wxp. Think of it this way someone that just starts today playing wvw will need to get 315 levels to get 315 chests you only need to do 157. I would be rather happy if i was you.
Really? I feel dumber for reading your logic. It’s simply not fair for those that have put in the time already. Why shouldn’t they get the chest right away? This is probably something Anet’s programmers cant figure out to do properly, so they implement this system, epic fail.
charge cores/lodestones drop from FOTM daily chest as well, and they also drop other lodestone types and items you can sell for cash, unless you hate FOTM, but doing a level 10 or 20 FOTM daily is not that hard.
so Anet wants to make it as inconvenient as possible for players? LOL. Epic fail at that logic.
tweaking some classes to have anti-stealth and anti-thief skills in WvW will be nice too.

I don’t know. Are the idiots chasing 10v1 any better than the thief trolling them? Why should the game be balanced so that the chasers win? Inbalance that allows you to avoid these noob blobs is more than justified.
Low risk – high reward is not good because it removes any decision making process.
The thing is, roaming as a thief is not low risk – high reward. It is low risk – low reward. Zerging and blobbing however is truly low risk – high reward.
it’s not about balance the game so the “chasers” win, it’s about not letting one class decide when to engage, when to take risk, while putting other classes in less favorable situations in any sorts of confrontation. An ideal solution is to add some counters to some other classes against thief’s stealth abilities. Ranger would make an ideal class to receive that boost.
the 4 sec requirement to set the trap in motion is how Anet shows their love for thieves, they must all have a thief as their main or active characters.

wouldn’t get the celestial ascended accessories benefit more with this build, since rangers benefit more from most of the stats(such as healing power and condition dmg) than other classes would?
^that is laughably the worst comparison I’ve seen. As if those two skills have any relevance and good use of putting boons on the Warrior too.

From these very actions, people have different points of view, many, including myself, would say that if the Thief didn’t have so much mobility I’d have blasted him in the sky. Others would just say that so much mobility and stealth is grossly overpowered. I understand that an Engineer is amongst the biggest threats to a Thief, but I’d say that their current abilities is a necessary evil. I’d worry more about Mesmers than Thieves.

This build is exactly what ive been rolling since i first got GW2; The only question i have is what other pets would you consider using Valroth? Keeping the feline and canine set up of course :P

Play in T1? Thieves are almost useless.
Play in T8? Thieves are OP.
Thieves will probably get buffed because ANET doesn’t care about T8 and balances with only T1 in mind.
Probably around 50% of roamers are thieves.
Go in WvWvW use Fraps and show me your 50% Thieves. I am in four guild (2x pvp guilds with150+ online players) Thieves are barely 5% of the population of this guilds.
But of course you’re right WvWvW is full of Thiefs sarcasm
so rest of the people are wrong because the 4 guilds that you are in make up 5% of the guild roster? Tunnel vision much? LoL.

I am mesmer main, so I really dont feel sorry for you guys, given the recent nerf to the mesmer class. Confusion and retal nerf and ibersker “under the radar” nerf are just as bad if not worst than what you guys got.
Curious, are you cognizant of the fact that now confusion builds are non-existent in all 3 areas of the game (WvW, sPvP and PVE)?
I think they do know, but they just dont care.
This is why thief community is so harsh and desperated at the moment. We have already been nerfed and other nerfs are on the way, still silly people complain and whine about us.
Do you think we’re OP? Roll a thief and let’s see if we are really OP as you say. People in wvwvw die because of thieves because EVERY thief is built for dueling and 1v1 while 80% of the wvwvw people are built for group fights. In fact in sPvP we are the most “meh” class after warriors.
