I’ve found that the main tactic to follow when dealing with thieves is to stay defensive if the thief is engaging you, try to look for a chance to counter attack using chained CC’s (except inmobilization) then go as offensive as possible.
Thieves main defensive skills rely on stealth or dodging, so it means that if you use the CC in the right moment they will be exposed to your or group hits, so it won’t take much to down them.
That being the general tactic advice, it will be different depending on the build and pets you like to get around (spike trap, taunts, fear, stuns for CC) plus the deffensive skills you rely on.
I run a WS, BM, NM power build, that provides a lot of deffensive skills and CCs, so I don’t have many difficulties when dealing with these thieves.

i only do pvp now so i do the pvp dailys. however i hate being forced to play toons i do not like in order to finish them. the main reason i would like it changed is because it is not fair to my team mates playing a toon i suck at just to get a daily finished
i am having a lot of trouble pvping these thief’s that just dodge to kill. i looked up their build not only does the build have infinite dodging it clears a condi with each dodge witch is giving me more trouble. i have to say it is very annoying getting killed with knifes that fly out when they dodge. so in a nut shell they do not even use a skill to kill people . i was told if i hit them has soon has they land i can hurt them is this true? if so i am stupid when it comes to timeing
There would be million ways to implement a competitive behaving leaderboard. This topic should not be about the methods rather the bare question of do the community want the ranked to be competitive?
Right now it is not. Not even close. I dont want to talk about the Team leaderboard for the reason it is not “team” leaderboard. The topic is regarding the personal-side of ranking system.Further explanatios for people before voting:
- Competitive ranking means that you gonna have a position on the leaderboard based on your skill level
- It means that you have to face that maybe you are average
- it means that others see your skill level even if its low level
- it means that after a certain time you can only progress by getting better
- separating players by true skill level can lead to much balanced matches on every skill level
- Balancing around competitive scene, high skill builds are revarding, less spam, less passives, gameplay returns to the old combat system
- Casual ranked means that the leaderboard functions like it is now (closely)
- Everyone with mediocre effort can reach the highest ranks
- Gameplay is bumbed down, less build diversity, easy to master classes, many low skill high reward classes
- More PvEstuff in revard
- Mixed skill level of players
- time based progression.

when you talk about easy to master classes do you mean they shouldn’t be in ranked?
Its an otp. It does basically have infinite evades and it can be really annoying to kitten off players that dont know how to deal with it (or revs).
But in the end off the day it will die to most opponents who know the evade frames and know how to time their skills.
i had tons of trouble keeping track of him probably just need practice with guys like that
do thief’s have infinite dodges? after seeing how effective it was i am surprised theirs not more like this guy. he did nothing but kill people by dodging i never seen anything like it. spikes would shoot out with every dodge. every now and again he would do that spinning skill but he only did thoughs two things and he was killing everyone. even though he killed me a few times it was fun to watch. maybe he was just one skilling everyone if you dont count a dodge has a skill. i just found it odd that someone would use a dodge has there main killing move…..after some have said they do not have infinite dodges. i did some research and found this by the way this is how he was killing only difference he was more skilled at it then this person. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI1k88k3PZY

I had considered doing that, psizone. The idea was a more “hybrid” build so that I still have some power for spike damage.
trunks – Yeah I know, like I said above, the hybrid idea is just so the build has 2 sources of damage. Neither is “top notch” by any means, but the build is very survivable and in the “long fight”, it is more likely to win because of its sustain and constant ability to keep applying conditions while still dealing raw damage.

hi all i am thinking of trying a new build but have know idea what a good set up would be. i want to have great sword and sword and dagger has my weapons and for some reason i have rune of the scrapper stuck in my head. beyond that i have no idea what i should use. any ideas you guys could give me would be fantastic thank you in advace
Looks reasonable, but traps are a bit of a waste of utilities for PvP IMO. DH had the same problem, no one past emerald is going to walk through your traps. 1 offensive trap is the most I’d go, then add a stun breaker or SoR or etc.
traps are not a waist. i use spikes and snake traps and they help out a lot. every now and again i kill a thief with just the traps
Warriors can take breserker stance+last stand+healing signet for like 20 sec resistance. During this time he’s in god mode and you need to kyte for your life.
really 20 sec of full condi dmg res? if that is true i will have to approach warriors differently then . most of the time i go in fast and hit hard and its over
Most warriors i pvp are very easy to kill. However i bumped into a warrior today that took my spike trap snake trap and my bonfire sword dagger combo and his hp hardly went down i was shocked. i even said are you god lol. Has anyone else seen a warrior pull that off?
I rarely see eles in my unranked matches now… Maybe they’re on a hiatus until S3. I welcome our new Warrior overlords

I got the lord to 1/2 hp before the other team broke down the last door. When i called for help no one ever came .So we ended up losing both matches .Because the other team sent two to kill me with their lords help. This has happend to me two times in a row so i called it quits. Am i missing something? Does anyone have an idea why no one came to help?
I usually shun 2 or more offensive traps in a build. They might work, so I won’t get skeptical around them… But I’ll just list what the build lacks:
-Reliable counter to CCs. You have neither Stability nor enough stun-breakers.
-Reliable counter to Conditions (you can count lack of vitality in that, too). There’s a lot of them flying around. You have no way to defend apart from CAF on a decent cooldown. If you press it at a wrong time – it’s game over.Apart from that, just a few ideas:
-have you tried the set with different stats? You are currently wasting 900 stats of precision (without Skirmishing). I think Carrion might be a viable substitution (axe is hybrid and sword might be played as hybrid after all).
-Why would you prefer untraited Glyph of Rejuvenation over Troll Unguent (or WHaO)? It has a long CD, and Troll Unguent not only heals for more but it has a bit better synergy with Bark Skin and has a massive synergy with Druid (every tick procs all minors – which means every tick procs that extra little healing as well as healing boost) – and it fills 50% of your CAF alone.
well tested out troll and carrion troll is a no go in vs more then one person would work a lot better if settlers amulet was still around or if i was a long range fighter. when it comes to carrion ammy it makes my plus 20% crit chance from tiger useless and it seems toughness out performs vit in melee combat

i thought a cliric build would work great with staff and having 3 gylphs ane gliph elite.however it really only work when i was in a group. example taking mid at start.kept everyone alive to take mid even if the other team was zerging. when it came to splitting up not so well. some fights would take forever and others i would drop fast depending on class. so far i havent found a really good build for it

The build looks pretty solid. For the druid build id actually change the glyph to another trap or muddy terrain. And then change verdent etching to natural stride. Better strafing potential and better if you are playing as a roamer.
Dunno if that would make the build any better but it seems like a pretty valid 2nd option.
i am not a fan of his builds i kill them to easily. however his glyph is a good choice low cool down and it will hold and bleed anyone with his next attack giving him time to run or finish them off. i use that glyph on my cliric and condi build
huh, interesting seeing as literally no one is running these builds yet. at least, i havent seen a single ranger trying out SB, maybe because it’s so bad or seemingly bad. good luck with your clirics bro.

Looking around, build diversity isn’t very high. One of the reasons for this may be some extremely specific weapon traits. For rangers, something like Light on Your Feet. These weapon traits only apply to 1 specific weapon. Some traits for instance, only affect 1 or 2 conditions, which in turn kind of dictates your rune choice and skill selection. I would suggest a more thematic design that is less specific. Maybe dividing ranger weapons into subcategories like ranged offensive/melee offensive/melee defensive then having 1 trait that greatly improves every weapon that fits into each of these categories. For instance, a trait that increases sword, axe OH, and GS auto-attack (+ whirling defense for OH axe) speed by x%. Another trait that makes sword 2 evade during the whole cast, makes GS 4’s block last longer and dagger 4’s evade go further and last longer. Maybe make some of these traits mutually exclusive to each other.
Although you will force classes to play in a few number of specific ways, it will be easier to balance playstyles and make more meta builds viable.
there are traits for different builds right now i have two builds a con sword tourch/staff and a gs/staff cliric build there is a trait to make my torch con better and one to make great sword stronger

i have a druid ranged right now have two builds going. i have a con sword torch/staff build and a staff/gs cliric build. they both seem to be really good but the problem is i can go 10-12 match winning streak then strait to a 10-12 losing streak so at the moment i have no idea if i am good. so for me its hard to tell if its me fighting bad or good players. i have to say though its super easy to know when i am in a team that has no clue what they are doing. so in ranked is it just good players or does it have bad players and people that have no idea what to do has well? because i am dieing to find out if im great,good,ok or just suck
Sure. Thieves are the kings of 1v1. There is no way you can kill them. (srsly? Are you stuck in 2013?) Ok actually there IS no way you can kill them…and vice versa. You attack them, they have to run away.
on my druid ranger a thief has never been able to run away because has soon has i daze them they are rooted and get bleeds plus what ever else i want to do to them before they die. well there was one the other day that saw me and just ran the other way. only time they can kill me is if they get me while i am busy fighting someone else
earlier i was playing in the middle of a match my screen went black and my pc started buzzing.i couldn’t turn pc off had to unplug my pc . this has happened a few times now. this is the only game i play that it happens with.with a gaming pc this is hardly a game that could give this pc a work out. any ideas whats going on and how to fix it?

just wondering why Anet made the guard traps so strong?they are the only skills in game that kill me so fast. i have seen guards take out 3 people in less then a few seconds.
i have had to stop playing the game because for some reason while i am in game out of the blue my screen goes black and my pc makes a loud buzzing noise.this is the only game this happens with.before i got my R9 280x this never happened any ideas on a fix?
i know it did not fail for everyone but it did fail for me. for most it is probably a stupid reason but a reason none the less i hate gliding. the only thing i do now is pvp.if another expansion comes out. with normal maps i will not buy it unless i can get to it without going in the HoT maps

anyone think the new elite trait ancient seed will get a nerf soon after release?because trappers are going to be all over that trait and with a 10 sec CD .its basically entangled every 10 sec and a trapper will be able to use it non stop and if they have entangled skill people will die pretty quickly. i can see it now use trap soon has trap is set off the entangled from ancient seed will hurt them while they cant move pop bonfire then entangled skill.by that time trap cd should be over.and just do it all over again tell there dead

i know most F2P games have problems but there’s another mmo i play besides this one.that has a big name stapled to its title that i thought would be held to a higher Standard but i was wrong.i am really worried that this game will fall into this same trap.thoughts?
Reduce amount of condition damage and increase tough vitality and healing, enough to make these builds less bursty and more attrition oriented
just roll a ele they seem to take no damage from condi builds.i have to run from them just pvped one and he or she went in fully naked and didn’t die one time
when i saw that they had the wings up for sale i figured i would log in and buy them. since i was already log in might has well do one pvp match best idea i had all day lol.half way into the match i die. soon has i come back to fight i see them all huddled up together i am right behind them i get a big grin on my face run up do entangled bonfire and lay down traps on them and run like hell lol it was a wonderful site to see
You have to keep in mind that there is no trinity in this game, so unlike other games where a DPS isn’t supposed to be tanky is factored in because they depend on healers in group combat.
Since there are no healers in the game, typically defensive builds are the best to run in PVP. It has to be the perfect balance between defense and damage pressure.
Historically in the past 3 years, a full damage build really wasn’t effective except for thieves because they had a high stealth uptime.
Now that traits are not locked to stats, it is now very common for defensive builds.
While you may think the game is overpowered, it’s actually quite balanced. In other video games, the match can literally be determined by the team composition before it starts. In this game, that is not the case.
so the ton of damage an ele can put out and still be extremely tanky is balanced to you? there so posed to be a balance you want power you sacrifice survival and vise versa.the warrior and guard are excellent examples of this a bunker will be able to live alot longer.while putting out less damage.if he ran a zerker he would kill faster but also die fast to.ele does not have to worry about it.they get to have there cake and eat it to

this is the only mmo i have ever played where dps build can be has tanky has a tank build. i give up on pvp leaving game tell things are more balanced or HoT comes out since i have done everything you can do in this game along time ago.Anet has even stated that there are some balancing problems and bugs.but they are more focused on HoT at the moment to fix everything.inst there anyway to test new changes and balancing before giving it to us?in my head i had always thought that you guys had your own server only for people working at Anet.where when making changes everyone at Anet plays it for a few months to work out bugs and balancing.i mean come on i am sure theirs nothing like beating your boss in pvp to let off some steam lol

I agree, but they haven’t even touched the pet menu since beta (over 3 years). The pet menu has so much potential for improvement (as the screenshot given above).
All pet-only traits should be limited to Beastmastery.
I don’t pick Beastmastery since I’m trying to limit pet use (pets are worthless in too many WvW situations), but I’m stuck with Fortifying Bond because it comes with Nature Magic automatically.
Another bad pet trait is Alpha Training. It should be merged into Opening Strike. There should be no pet-only traits outside of Beastmastery.
These are some examples of traits which involve the pet, but are fine outside of Beastmastery:
- Clarion Bond (on-pet-swap is fine)
- Shared Anguish
- Emphatic Bond (but might be better in Beastmastery for other reasons)
- Allies’ Aid (love it in Nature Magic)
So I just want them to change Fortifying Bond and Alpha Training.
skills that you want on opening strike would mess up other builds.i don’t use bow so i have no reason to pick marksmanship trait line.i do however think every pet related trait belongs in beastmastery .for the fact they are pet traits

Trap Ranger was great pre 6/23/2015. Post 6/23/2015 it doesn’t work anymore. You have a handful of players who want to try and make it work but it just doesn’t. The only viable Ranger spec now is Power LB/GS when it is played as Peeler +1’er.

I just got out of a game where the majority of the team used pulls and knockbacks to send players to their deaths and the majority of the time avoided fighting all together. A map that gives a advantage to players who can knockback or pulls is frankly mind boggling. Learning to use a single skill effectively is fine as long as it doesn’t spell instant death for a opponent we as players should learn to use our skills cohesively to win the fight. I beg of you Anet get rid of the breakable the glass in skyhammer it employs dirty tricks that isn’t beneficial to the health of pvp. I rarely see people vote for skyhammer and is picked because of the random nature sometimes of the map selector, I have no doubt in my mind this would be the driving force of why people don’t pick it.
Before someone says “get gud” let me ask you something should I learn to play the class or a skill to win?
changing or just plain taking the map down has been talked about many times on forums since the map came out.nothing has changed and more then likely never will
