So to clarify the thought behind:

1. Must be able to be hot join-able

One thing we really want to do is promote and grow the player base. Now, what does that mean? When a new player (either to PvP or to the game) joins PvP for the first time they go to custom arenas to play and learn the game in a less competitive environment. We want those players to retain and work their way up to the competitive game modes: Solo or Team queue. So the meaning behind that statement is that the game mode must work for both casual and competitive environments to help grow the community.

A “multiple purchase glitch” is not common, and normally it comes about because someone clicks “buy” too rapidly, without allowing time for the first purchase to be confirmed. But I can see this was not what happened in your case, so I will share so the team is aware of the situation.

Absolutely correct. Our payment provider has pretty strict rules about charge-backs, and we don’t want your account put into jeopardy with a charge-back. Simply click “Support” at the top of this page, then “Submit a request” and we will issue a credit for the erroneous purchases as quickly as possible. Refunds can take a few days to process on your card, but we take this very seriously and we will work as quickly as possible on our end to get that credit into the system!

Display Issue with Gem Card Purchase

We are aware of the situation where a player purchases XX gems but the display shows that he/she is getting only X gems. Fortunately, in all the cases the team has investigated, the player is getting the proper number of gems, but the display is wrong and the team is working on it.

If you have experienced this issue, and particularly if you happen to have a screenshot of it, please post here, so the team involved in Gem Store development can see the details.

We’d like to know:

  • Date of purchase
  • Display Name on Account
  • What the display said you were receiving
  • What you received (and the assumption here is that you got the proper amount, otherwise you should submit an individual ticket)

Please note that each account owner needs to submit a ticket directly. That is, you cannot do so on your wife’s behalf. She should click “Support” above, and then “Submit a request” to verify account ownership and let us know how we can help her.

This does happen from time to time, so others in this situation also should submit a ticket to inquire about a possible remedy. But keep in mind, the last thing we would want is a new player feeling bad about an early decision of this nature. We really do try to assist as much as is possible and reasonable.

SUGGESTION: Submit a ticket via the webpage (SERVICES (above) > SUPPORT > SUBMIT A REQUEST (top right)). That page requires you to supply a good bit of information to PROVE you are the account owner. You don’t need to answer ALL the questions (but you do need to make sure you select an option in each drop down). From the info submitted, CS will be able to determine if you ARE the original account owner (rather than you play 20 questions with them via email for a week).

Note that the most important details they usually want are what WORLD you started playing on (Server name), a character name and the payment method (and CC last 4 digits) used to purchase the original game.

Just my 2 coppers.

Pretty accurate, but I would not say that the starting world is one of the most important details. There are others that we’d like more: serial code, birth date, etc. Because those are details that only the account holder should know.

Still and all, your suggestions about account verification are sound.

Invent a new trap!

Good discussion here guys. We’ve got our own list of potential future tricks and traps, and while I can’t go into detail on what’s in the works, I can give you guys insight into some of the guidelines we try and follow when creating these.

Specifically there are a few WvW traps abilities that we try to avoid:

  • Traps that can instantly kill players. We don’t want you to be able to passively wipe a group by stacking three invisible explosive traps on top of each-other. That said, we are more open to these types of traps as long as there is some counterplay available (like the trap has a visible land mine effect, or gives the group warning to dodge away quickly before it explodes.)
  • Traps that summon additional combatants (guards, creatures, golems, etc.) This is more for server performance concerns (skill lag.) While we have exception to this in WvW already, the idea is to avoid making the problem worse.
  • Traps that are functionally extremely similar to an existing profession skill. Ranger Spike Trap, Thief Needle Trap, etc. Similarly we probably wouldn’t do a trap that just applies a standard condition to an area (Cripple, Poison, Burning, etc.)

I am not certain about this, so I’d be delighted if you update the thread if you learn more. What I’m wondering is: Maybe the “bank transfer” method of PayPal payment isn’t considered instant, because PayPal has to ping the bank and get the money transferred. On the other hand, a CC instantly pays the bill through PayPal. That may be the difference, but again, I’m not certain.

While perhaps a bit…er… “direct” … the input from players is accurate. We must have some information about an account, some “proof of ownership,” or we cannot possibly turn over details that allow someone — who could be anyone at all — to access the account.

We do not require a special character in our passwords. We do, sometimes, use the name of a character on the account as one of several possible means to try to confirm account ownership. That isn’t to say that a character name could be accepted alone, because character names are publicly visible. But in conjunction with other account information, it could help. So that may be what your boyfriend saw, and je confused the inquiry about a character name with the use of a symbol like % or @.

I do not believe that someone said “No” without a reason or explanation. That makes no sense at all — we want our players to be able to play on their accounts! If this is at least three days old, you may post in the “Tickets for Review” thread with the ticket number. At this point, no one — including me! — really has sufficient details to help with your concerns. And posting here asking for a supervisor review isn’t at all effective.

Here’s exactly how Association worked for this latest tournament, and why it can have the effects some of you are seeing .

For WvW Spring Tournament 2014, this is how Association scoring worked:

  • Load into a WvW map for the first time that day: Gain 1 Association score for your current home world.
  • Complete any achievement that contributes to the WvW Spring Tournament 2014 meta achievement: Gain 2 Association score for your current home world.

Your main Associated shard is then the one with the highest score within the current datacenter. That last part is the caveat that’s preventing some tournament rewards from being issued. Or in some cases “wrong” rewards (working as intended, but not desired, and certainly not clear). In other cases, if a player transferred mid-tournament and has Associations in both datacenters, their rewards will be bound to the most-Associated shard within the datacenter when they talk to the Battle Historian to get the new tournament tickets. This is the intended behavior for this tournament, but has been confounded by issues with Association getting locked-in prematurely.

Some rewards were incorrectly granted too early. When rewards are given, your most-associated world is locked-in at that moment. This applies even if you change datacenters. Your Association scores can still change, but your one true Association for that tournament is still the one from which you received rewards. With the fix that went out on June 17th, that lock was reset, resetting your most-Associated world to whichever one has the highest score in your current datacenter, until talking to the Historian and getting the rewards locks/locked it in again.

We did ship with 3 round round tournaments with 8 teams and rewards were based on placement. However, the barrier to entry was high and queue times were long. Having a structured (in-game) way to support multi-round tournaments again would be fun though.

Some additional information for the technically-inclined.

An interesting combination of two bugs affected this tournament, causing those premature rewards and Association lock-in. One new from our work on the tournament, one very old that never showed itself before, because nothing else happened to hit just the right case before this tournament. The old one is of a sort that’s very rare to catch (so I’m glad we now know it exists, so that we can fix it). A timing issue on cross-server communication would sometimes cause some maps to, for just a few seconds to a few minutes, have one particular time-related variable set to many years in the future (well beyond the end of the tournament). This then caused some players to be granted a tournament placement achievement prematurely (the “1st place”, etc. achievements with rewards attached).

TL;DR: Please do the following only if you have completed the WvW Spring Tournament 2014 meta-achievement:

  1. Check your in-game mail for 100 new Tournament tickets.
    1. If you don’t have this mail, skip the remaining steps and submit a ticket.
  2. Speak to the Battle Historian in-game, and note the world you’re Associated with in your chat window in yellow text.
    1. If you don’t see the world you expected to see, post here and/or submit a ticket. Go no further.
  3. Use the first conversation option to claim your tournament tickets.
  4. Enjoy spending the tickets as you please.

Issues with either not receiving the new Tournament tickets, or receiving a wrong number, are related to world Association for the purposes of WvW Spring Tournament 2014. Part of the problem is a cross-datacenter limitation (more on this later).

Here’s exactly how Association worked for this latest tournament, and why it can have the effects some of you are seeing .

For WvW Spring Tournament 2014, this is how Association scoring worked:

Auroma.9126, it sounds like you have 0 Association in the EU datacenter, so the servers there can’t give you rewards, since they don’t see any non-zero Association scores for worlds in that datacenter. In other cases, if a player transferred mid-tournament and has Associations in both datacenters, their rewards will be bound to the most-Associated shard within the datacenter when they talk to the Battle Historian to get the new tournament tickets. Update: I asked QA to take a look at this and try to repro the bug. At worst, I’m going to try adding some additional UI to indicate where the enemies are located, in case the problem is that there’s an enemy somewhere that needs to be killed to spawn the next wave. (The initial spawns and story-specific attack waves look identical right now.) I can’t give an ETA on when this change will go in, but we’re not ignoring the issue, it’s just one that seems to have a very specific repro and I haven’t found it after dozens of play throughs.

Hi!

I was logging on to my alternate character, a level 80 engineer, when I noticed that the name of it has changed. I had originally named it Miss Nicki heat but now when I looked at it again it read Miss Nick Heat. I’ve never seen it change like this randomly..is this supposed to happen?

One of our agents looked into the account and no one on our end changed the name, nor was it flagged for renaming. It is showing as Nick, and it was Nick from the beginning. The only possible exception is if you used a Name Change Contract and changed it yourself but since you’ve expressed concerns, that seems highly unlikely. But again, not flags for required renaming; no agent renames on this one.

My friend just got the game and he gets to the registration process and there is always an error with his password when ever he enters it in. It is long enough and it is unique. PLEASE HELP!!!

It is possible that your friend is trying to use a password that:

  • was used by someone else in Guild Wars 2. For security we do not allow the use of a password that is in use for another player, or that has been previously used by the account holder.
  • is on a “known password” list created by hackers and shared amongst their community. We prevent such use because hackers will spin through those lists to see if they can use the known password to steal an account.
  • contains disallowed characters.

I would suggest that your friend continue to try to input a new password, using characters from the English-language alphabet along with numbers and symbols. I received 250 wvw tickets before the problem about distributing ticket happened. Today I updated and saw my 250 tickets all gone outdated? but I got a mail and only received 100 tickets..
All I have is 100tickets to use… Is this what I get for finishing meta achievement only 100tickets? If this is a problem please help me out and solve this problem.

John Smith surely uses metrics comparable to GDP to kitten the health of the game’s economy across several dimensions.

In his shoes, I probably would not choose to share them.

  • Publishing some specific stats might have an undesirable impact on the economy. Other stats might be too useful for gold sellers.
  • Publishing only a few stats tends to give undue importance to those numbers — despite any caveats given, people will will mistakenly draw conclusions that are then hard to dispel.
  • The data is probably available in a form useful to JS and his colleagues; it would probably take considerable work to make it publishable in a form digestible for the majority of players.

I’d love to see this sort of data, but I think JS would already be posting stuff like this if it were both easy to do and likely to be of use to the community.

People really need to be more obvious when they are not serious.

John, care to comment about the rumour that you have a big red button on your desk, similar to the easy button but it’s glowing apparently – that would, if you press it, delete all gold from the game period. Undisclosed sources are saying you received special training in a monastery somewhere in the himalayas (where you may or may not have unvoluntarily gained insight into the life of alpacas) in order to responsibly operate this button. How do you manage? Do you receive extra compensation?

That’s a real button. Unfortunately, due to a labeling error, it’s now indistinguishable from my button that destroys the world. So right now it’s a very serous game of chicken with 50/50 odds of total planetary annihilation.

I am really loving the discussion going on in this thread. This is a testament to how awesome our community is! Alright so now that we have flushed out some ideas let me give you some guide lines and let me know if we can design around it.

1. Must be able to be hot join-able
* Not easily griefed and allow players to be able to jump in and out
2. Must fit the 5 on 5 standard
3. Can fit our standard PvP match time (15 mins)
4. (Would Be Nice) Shout castable

Alright let me know how your ideas fit or change with these standards.

New World Event Times
In consideration of player feedback, several changes have been made to the rotations to make the players’ favorite world bosses more accessible.

  • Low-Level Rotation—The four world events in this rotation will continue to activate 15 and 45 minutes past the hour, regardless of other rotations.
  • Standard Rotation—The six world events in this rotation will continue to activate on the hour and 30 minutes past the hour. This rotation is now independent of all other rotations. The TBD event slot has been removed.
  • Hardcore Rotation—The three world events in this rotation now activate more frequently, at the following times:
    • 03:30 PST / 10:30 UTC – Karka Queen
    • 04:30 PST / 11:30 UTC – Tequatl
    • 05:30 PST / 12:30 UTC – Great Jungle Wurm
    • 08:00 PST / 15:00 UTC – Karka Queen
    • 09:00 PST / 16:00 UTC – Tequatl

World Polish

  • Sparkfly Fen
    • Fixed an issue that caused Tequatl to fly away and never return if he burned too quickly during his vulnerable phase.
  • Claw Island
    • Areas and points of interest, once they are discovered, will remain revealed when viewed from other maps.
  • Frostgorge Sound
    • Fixed a bug with the Rebel Isaak renown region for rewarding too much renown when defeating dredge. Renown rewards will now be in line with other renown hearts.

General

  • Waypoints and markers visible on maps different from the player’s current map are now always displayed as uncontested. When teleporting to a waypoint on a different map, if that waypoint is contested in the destination map copy, the player will be redirected to the nearest uncontested waypoint.

Items

  • Sclerite Karka Shells purchased from rewards vendors at the Festival of the Four Winds can now be properly used at the Mystic Forge to create an ascended back-piece item.

World vs. World

  • All players who qualified for rewards from the Spring 2014 Tournament have been given 100 additional WvW Tournament Claim Tickets.
  • World vs. World Spring 2014 Tournament placement achievements and associated tournament chests have been redistributed.
  • The Battle Historian’s Tournament Rewards tab has been re-enabled.

BLACK LION TRADING COMPANY GEM STORE
New Items and Promotions

  • For two weeks, all Black Lion Chests will contain a guaranteed bonus Dragon Coffer. Black Lion Chest Keys are available in the Special category of the Gem Store for 125 gems each.
  • Dragon’s Jade weapons can now be purchased from Black Lion Weapons Specialists for the introductory price of 1 Black Lion Claim Ticket for the next four weeks. Black Lion Claim Tickets and Ticket Scraps can be found inside Black Lion Chests.
  • Total Makeover Kits and Self-Style Hair Kits now have additional exclusive hair colors and eye colors. Kits can be found in the Services category of the Gem Store for 350 and 250 gems respectively.

Improvements
Custom Arena Starter Kits and Custom Arena Time Tokens have been removed from the Gem Store and have been added to a vendor near the PvP browser in the Heart of the Mists.

  • The cost of Custom Arena Starter Kits has changed from 1600 gems to 200 gold.
  • The cost of Custom Arena Time Tokens has changed from 150 gems to 2 gold.
  • Existing Custom Arena Starter Kits and Time Tokens will continue to work normally.
  • Boost Enchantment Powder now also converts Killstreak Experience Boosts to Enchanted Reward Boosts.
  • Enchanted Reward Boosts can now be used to grant Killstreak Experience Boosts.

Wanze is pretty accurate on this one. We don’t infract on necros, unless you are intentionally necro’ing numerous threads to troll or cause unrest. When a thread is a necro, it warns you ahead of time about responding to it, so you do take a chance that the thread will shut down anyway. Especially if you just write /bump.

The Feedback threads we designate on patch days are incredibly important so we can get as much information (good, bad, broken, bugs, whatnot) as possible without the Dev Team spending time looking all over for the feedback. Specific staff will be looking for the feedback pertaining to their job. As example, we try to forward all bug reports to the bug forums so QA can track it and submit. They’ll be the first to notice the patterns and get the ball rolling.
