let me brake it down for you (and i do not play BS spec)

Basilisk Venom (Elite Skill) > Assassin’s Signet > Cloak and Dagger > Steal > move behind the target > Backstab

By now if you cant avoid a backstab on a 1v1 you are doing it wrong man.
When I’m caught off guard and unprepared is one thing but if I see him coming, no way he will be able to backstab me even once during the fight.

Pretty much this. There’s a lot of play in that build/combo, and so long as you keep your wits about you, you should be okay. There’s also some really interesting feints that can happen withb that build, where at the moment of cloaking, if you let them blow their invulns and dodge rolls early, you can take advantage of it. Everyone expects the damage to come ASAP, but if you delay it even a couple seconds players will blow their skills by over-reacting to it.

So why is this not ok but thief burst is?

Because there is play in thief burst. There is play there, and that spike isn’t a single attack that’s 150% your max HP in damage. Thieves need to execute a series of skills in a row, in which at any time the victim has the potential to mitigate or have some sort of play to save themselves or stop the thief. You just don’t see that with the 100nades stuff, or its a window so narrow that we as devs weren’t happy with the play from both sides of the equation as attacker/defender.

At about what level do the storylines cross?

I consider things like “hundred nades bug” to be OP, where a single attack dos 26k damage in an AOE.

/sigh that photoshopped picture keeps on making the rounds doesn’t it?

There was actually a super awesome video of it in WvW, where I watched a single engi take out a group of guardians and warriors by jumping into the middle of them, lol. I looked for the video, but this is all I could find. I feel it’s good enough to represent it.

Hey folks, I figured I would swoop in and drop a reply.

I remember playing my ranger in PvP and getting “2-spammed” by a D/D thief and dying in about 3-5 seconds. I had no idea how to stop them, and they seemed intent on finding my heart. I couldn’t even hit the bugger since he blinded me and pulled a stun off. I remember thinking to myself “Man, my ranger couldn’t do 19k damage in five seconds. Thief OP!” Until I actually went and made such a thief out of spite. I’ll admit right now I am not much a thief player… Only about level 30 in PvE, and about 10 games played as thief in SPvP – but in those few games I would just dominate people. Load up the +% damage traits, stealth, and then it’s just a matter of a few button presses. But in playing that thief, I learned how to counter that thief. Bring a stun breaker, a condi removal, some CC, and know how/when to dodge roll. It doesn’t work all the time, especially if my stunbreaker is on CD from a previous fight (Pistol Whip is rough!), but if a thief gets the jump on me I have about 2 seconds to react, and then I make the thief pay.
I consider things like “hundred nades bug” to be OP, where a single attack dos 26k damage in an AOE. Sacrificing so much versatility/defense to be a glass cannon spiker is not OP, it’s a build. That build is just really really good at spiking, and it overpowers almost any other build the thief can bring to deal damage. There are a few builds you don’t see often with thieves that are pretty good, because players weigh efficiency in murdering something quickly to be greater than surviving a drawn out encounter, so they’ll bring the most efficient build to accomplish that… which in my experience has been the D/D heart seeker. There’s some neat shadow-step steal/pistolwhip/quickness/unload type builds out there, but that D/D thief overpowers and obscures the potential for other builds to rise up. In my eyes they could use some more versatility… I know that when I play my ranger I can many different things at once – I have a large tool box of sometimes very useful tools, and that makes me harder to bring down since I am not so easily countered.

Well this is longer than I was thinking it would be, and now I have subjected the thief forum to my punctuation, so I better stop. Also I’ll admit to being little on edge in this forum… I’m a ranger in the middle of a thieves den!

Feel free to move the discussion here. The WvW matchup is reset at the same time because of the way the system works. We can’t separate the reset time for EU and NA because of this.

Greetings WvW players!

As part of our ongoing effort to improve the game experience with changes big and small, we’ve decided to change the time of the WvW match resets. The current time is 00:00 UTC on Saturdays, which is mighty inconvenient for our European friends who want to get in on the action of the newest match right away. We’ve decided that moving the reset time back by 2 hours to 22:00 UTC on Friday night to try and find a more happy medium for NA and EU servers. This will go into effect beginning this week and will be the new time going forward. Hopefully this makes it easier for you all to jump right in at the start of a new matchup.

Hey gang – For those of you who are experiencing lag from AFTER maintenance (not those who may have been having lag issues prior to maintenance), could you please post some net diags to this thread so we can look through them?

To do so, please follow the steps below:
1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 folder.
2. Right-click on “Gw2.exe” and select “Create Shortcut.”
3. Right-click on “Gw2.exe – Shortcut” and select “Rename.”
4. Rename this file to “Guild Wars 2 Diagnostic.”
5. Right-click on “Guild Wars 2 Diagnostic” and select “Properties.”
6. Locate the “Target” line and add the following to the end " -diag"
Your target line should look like this: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -diag
7. Click OK to save your changes.
8. Open “Guild Wars 2 Diagnostic” to start the test.

Once completed, please click “View Results” and save the results to a text file on your desktop. Once saved, please attach that to this thread for review (click More posting &formatting options… to attach).

EDIT: Can I also get you guys to provide what server you’re on as well?

Looks like PvP boards are 5% granularity now so at 5% you are probably between 0 and 5 if I had to guess how it works.

As we have stated many times we have tried many modes and there is a reason we ended up where we did. This is not to say we will not introduce new modes at some point, however a few notes on death match.

1) You can obviously have it without a healer.
2) Even games people consider to be DM have tons of secondary objectives (Quake 3, counter strike, Starcraft, etc.)
3) Objective based games tend to be both more total noob friendly AND more esport observer friendly as players/watchers can go/look at where the action will likely be.

Deathmatch without other objectives lacks things like a reason to engage, a way to break stalemates, and a tie breaker. It also creates much wider blowouts when someone on your team doesn’t know what they are doing (does this ever happen to you that you get a clueless teammate? Heh)

Hopefully that clears up some of our reasoning for future discussions.

This is a percentile. Like when you went to the dr. As a kid an you would be in the 40th percentile for height it means you are taller than 40% of the population of kids your age.

In our case it means you are in that percentile among people who have played enough tournament matches since the most recent reset to be on the Leaderboards. If you search and don’t see yourself listed you have not played enough tournament games to qualify. Currently it is accurate to within 10%, but the goal is to get this to 1% or less eventually.

There are more Leaderboards features still coming as well once we are sure the current feature set is stable.

Can you check that your in-game inbox isn’t full? If it is full, the item wouldn’t be returned to your Pickup tab, either. If it is full, though, deleting some mail should make them show up.

If you are having problems with the BLTC not loading, or if you are not able to purchase items, please try clearing your GW2 cache. You can do this by closing the game client and:

1. In your Windows start menu type “%temp” (without the quotes) into the search field.
2. Delete all folders that say gw2 cache..
3. Re-launch your game client and try again.

If this does not solve your issue, please submit a customer support ticket so that we can help you an more involved level.

Unfortunately, since GW2 uses an in-game browser you may be experiencing an issue with your PC hardware settings, firewall settings, software settings, or UAC settings. We will need to work with you to find out what is going on.

If you are having a problem with items that you have purchased not showing up, please try deleting some of your in-game mail and see if the items then appear. A full inbox is the number 1 cause of Trading Post delivery problems. This can also occasionally be the cause of items not appearing in your Pickup Tab, as well.

If this doesn’t solve your problem, please submit a customer support ticket.

Now who’s name should I be cursing when a monkey knocks me off a leaf into poison water miles from dry land? At the moment I’m just cursing the monkey but it’s not the monkeys fault.

1. Yes you can solo.
2. You get Baubles that you can use in SAB to buy SAB weapons and items like a shovel or slingshot that you use IN SAB. You can also get Bauble Bubbles (which are worth 250 Baubles) if you play on normal mode from the chests at the end of each zone. Those BBs are what you trade in for skins. The only Engi skin right now is a shield. You can also get a back pack.
3. You can play through and get 90% of the fun out of it in several hours. It depends on how much of a completionist you are. If you feel like you have to get every achievement and find every secret it will be quite a bit longer. I’d say jump in for an hour and see how you like it. You’ll have a pretty good idea if it’s your cup of tea in that amount of time.

You can work together starting at L1. There are numerous splits along the way based on your Order, the minor race you help, your greatest fear, etc. So the earliest you could both have the same story step is in Chapter 4, if you both choose the same order.

How about how after you start the game, there is a cave in the waterfall behind you and in the cave are places where water shoots up. For some reason unlike in previous similiar games we can’t use them to go higher like we should. And for doing this there should be a puzzle up there with some 50 bauble treasures in it if you can figure out the puzzle.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you. Are you saying you can not jump on the water spouts?

The Super Adventure Box team, from left to right:

Daniel White is our programming magician. He gave us the power to swap out the UI, upgraded the missile code and combat system to get us that old school combat mechanic feel, and got our physics to work with wacky things like bounce mushrooms.

Lisa Davis is the one who brought everything together and made it go. She scripted all the creatures, skills, secrets, and figured out how to make it all work in one coherent whole. A truly magnificent feat!

Jeff Weber was our primary prop and creature artist. He built most of the walls, rocks, clouds, critters, and pretty much everything you see in SAB.

James Smith is our producer extraordinaire who somehow managed to heard all us cats in the same direction. Apparently we wore him out so he couldn’t make it for the picture. Photoshop to the rescue!

Josh Foreman built the maps and coordinated the project.

Trevor Howell brought all our boxy creatures to life with style. He also had to learn to breakdance before animating the spiders.

Jason Wiggin built the Super Adventure Box that sits in Rata Sum, made our weapon skins and the in-game items like the candle, bomb, pointy stick, etc., and the beautiful dancing flowers.

Byron Miller is our principal QA guy (or Secretsfindah) but most importantly, came up with the idea of the bee dog.

But we had a LOT of help from Maclaine Diemer and Leif Chappelle for music (Lief contributed weekends and evenings because he’s a designer here, not a musician) Jerry Schroeder and Drew Cady making our sound effects and environment sounds. Our effects team: Jens Hauch, Paul Whitehead, Patrick Axlen, Daniel Henley, James Showecker, Lee Bledsoe (Our whole FX department wanted in on the action!) Dave Beetlestone is our environment art lead and helped up navigate the fine line between retro and ugly.
And Peter Fries did our editing and wrote the best shopkeeper line: “I see now that all my hording has brought me only sadness.”

Thieves as well? I hope this is only for pve and not pvp because thieves are the last thing that needs a buff.

Most thieves don’t make it out of the lower tiers because you can mitigate them very easily. As a ranger I shut thieves down all the time who don’t use venoms, especially if you have something like healing spring and Lightning reflexes. One fixes stun, one fixes immob/cripple, and then it’s just dodge rolls at the right moment and CC to shut them down. Also bring wolf for f2 and stay nearby when thieves start doing their stealthy bit, and then be ready to watch them flee in terror.
That of course means their build options are highly limited, and when that happens people can hard counter you more easily.

The changes for rangers coming in this next patch are a step in the right direction for them. I am not part of that team so I won’t be announcing any of the changes unless told otherwise.

It’s totally meant as an “oh god I’m surrounded!” button, like Golden Ax and Final Fight… or was it Streets of Rage?… Anyway, yeah, it needs work. It’ll have a make-over for next release. I’ll look into knocking things off cliffs, as that is one of the most viscerally fun things to do in a game.

I did however notice several jumping puzzles that make their jumps impossible to do due to this mechanic, probably unintentionally. For example, Griffonrook Run relies entirely on avoiding the griffons and not getting hit. But sometimes the game still assumes you are in combat, thus decreasing how far you jump, and making the jump impossible. I have died so many times because of this.

I don’t think I made any combat-speed impossible jumps in Griffonrook. Though I did make finding and using the speed boost eggs an important part of the strategy.

Have you considered having the player always be in combat inside SAB and just having the speed boost be permanent?

Yeah, I think we looked into that. IIRC it was more problematic due to the animation set switch. But I’m not sure. I think we also did it before we got our programmer. So we might revisit the solution for our next release. I’ve got it on my list.

TL;DR version: it’s a known bug, since accepting progress of the other player will put you on the same followup story step, even if you wouldn’t normally be on that step. At this time, there’s nothing we can do, sorry. CS does not have the tools to reset your story progress, or change your current story step.

I show alot of people through for achievements and dieing 1-3 times per running others is making a huge number on my deaths count (think sab has added about 150-200deaths now to my main char)

Hm. I never even thought about this. I’ll see. I kind of doubt we can do anything about it, but then Lisa and Dan have amazed me several times so far with stuff I thought we couldn’t do.

As the glitch is inherently a part of the boss camera mode, I doubt Josh’s team has any members which are actively able to fix it, and the most they can do is bring it up as an issue with the guys that designed the camera in the first place (same as the issue with the camera going crazy when forced into a tight spot, etc)

Yeah, I know the bug was filed. It’s somewhere in the stack.

Strange, I cleared that jump the first time (with the 3 baubles over the gap in zone1) but haven’t managed to do it again so far. I definitely didn’t dodgejump, but I may have gotten combat speed boost just at the right time.

Isn’t that the craziest, most frustrating thing? That happens to me ALL THE TIME. I think last time I played Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts I breezed through the water level my first try, but died on the boss. Then took about 20 more lives just to get back to him again.

Hi Improzen – I would like you to delete the Temporary Cache for Guild Wars 2. To do this:

1. In Windows, press the “Start” button and locate the “Search programs and files” bar at the bottom of the start menu.

2. Type in temp exactly as shown. (With the precent signs)

3. Press “Enter” and a new window should appear with the location of “C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp”

4. Locate the folder labeled "gw2cache-{RANDOM NUMBERS} and delete it.

After doing this, please try running Guild Wars 2 again.
