Buying online still priced at £49.99 Why?

After the free trial weekend a couple of my friends are planning to buy the full version and one of them pointed out to me that buying online is still priced at £49.99 when the disc can be bought from a retail store or other online stores for merely £35.
Why is this? we are past beta now and theres no extra benefit other than instant delivery which isnt worth the extra £15. I thought that the advantage of selling online was that you cut out the middleman and save on packedging and discs that hold old versions of the client.
I had to convince my friend he could get the game much cheaper buying in store because he was instantly convinced that the price was ridiculous.
I apologise if this should have been posted in suggestions but I was wondering if there will be a sale or price reduction towards christmas? This game would be a fun gift for a few friends.

Yep, the price does vary, even from week to week, depending on who is selling and whether they’re offering a special of some kind. Our price on the website remains stable, in part because we leave most sales to our partners and we just maintain a steady price. However, we’ve had sales, too, and players can watch for them in the coming weeks.

Playing the trial and then upgrading through a retail purchase is perfectly fine, and if someone has difficulty the Support Team is set to help out.

Hi all.

Due to the amount of time the event took to run on a character, swapping to another character to run the instance again on a different overflow server is not considered an exploit by the development team. While there was an extremely small chance for individuals to jump to an overflow that required little effort to complete, the majority of players participating in the final event put in a lot of time and work so as such, they were entitled to receive the same reward for completing the event again. This was designed as such to allow those players who couldn’t hop on exactly at 12 noon PST an opportunity to participate in Sunday’s event.

Thanks for your feedback, which we’ll be sure to consider for future events, but for this event, this thread and topic are closed.

In regards your question concerning that thread, this is difficult to answer as I am not on the Development Team and so I don’t have any information on what was done with this information. This was, however, a good opportunity for us to get an idea of what sort of system setups were experiencing this issue and what sort of framerate these players were getting.

Unfortunately the best way to really assist players with these issues is one on one so that we can really narrow down any possible cause and have more ground to stand on as evidence that this is absolutely not a system related issue.

The Skipping Stones jump puzzle was co-authored by a couple of the members of the team. Jordan Anton did the design, and he was partnered with Jason Jones on the environment art. But the spirit of Josh lives in all of us whenever we create one of these puzzles. ;-)

We haven’t scrapped the old dungeons. We tried something new with Fractals, and so far it’s been very successful. I was on the team that built fractals, and now I am on the bug-fixing live team with a focus on our ‘old’ dungeons to fix bugs in there and see what I can do to spice them up a bit.

We’re certainly not going to just sweep the old dungeons under the rug. I will be working very hard on improving the dungeons.

Think of the trading post as a whole. These restrictions aren’t made to inconvenience you.

I understand but there are no limits on the number of buy orders I can do, so why the limit on sale orders? I find it hard to believe that your hardware cannot support it so it must be that you want demand to out pace supply. So, are these restrictions here so you can get a better return on gems sales by driving gold prices higher?

Currently 1 gold piece costs $1.61 to buy through gems. If ArenaNet can create artificial demand by allowing purchases to be made faster than orders can be listed then the price will go up on all items. What may have cost 1 gold piece, now costs 2 gold pieces, which you now have to pay $3.22 for.

John, did I guess right?

Ya….when we designed this, we were thinking that it’s very important to keep “tabs” on the opposing team when you go for an NPC kill on Forest. You want to have 1 “killer” on your team who finishes the NPC while the other people on your team stun/knockback/daze/blind/immobilize/chill/knockdown opponents to keep them from getting the last hit and winning the buff.

I think the idea in theory is great, the only problem is that a thief can go undetected and then stealth/steal/heartseaker in without any knowledge of his whereabouts. So, all of those strategies, imo, are moot for it.

Keep in mind that Thieves can’t just stealth through a trap, or a necro well, or a necro mark, or a Guardian bubble, etc. Thieves should be all about stealth and landing the perfect blow at the perfect time, but I think organized teams have found a LOT of ways to deal with them.

In pub games this is obviously harder to do than in an organized game, so I totally agree with you there.

Wow, what an amazing thread. Thanks for starting it tOss!

It’s a great idea and one that represents a very different point of view. You guys can do a lot to push the current game, and I applaud you for making an effort.

But at the same time, some of this still falls on myself and other devs. We will continue to listen to your posts about balance. We will continue to push features forward that help you to enjoy the game (like custom arenas, matched tourneys, QP rankings, leaderboards, a way to spectate the game, etc).

I know it sucks that everything isn’t done right away, but just know that we’re still working on the features we’ve mentioned before.

Until you get custom arenas, you can definitely use the current PvP browser to set up 5on5 matches and settle disputes via 1on1 duels. We don’t want to tell you how to enjoy the game, and we commend you for using the current systems as you wait for future features to come online.

Great thread guys. Some positive posts in here. It’s always great to see you guys passionately voicing how the game needs to improve.

I think that dueling is a great feature, but I don’t think it’s as important (right now) as ratings or a leaderboard is. With custom arenas, people will be able to duel all day long (1v1, or 2v2, or 3v3), so it seems to me that we need to focus more on rankings and leaderboards.

To that same end, I think that other game modes are something we’ll look at down the road, but for now, I think other features are just more important (like rankings, custom arenas where people can practice in private, leaderboards, spectator mode).

Your account will remain in place for some time with your characters, items, and levels in place. Don’t worry — if you choose to purchase later, you’ll be just fine. Don’t wait too long, though. Although there are no active plans to remove all trial accounts, that could happen down the line — I’m thinking months, not days or weeks — so you may want to consider getting the full account.

My husband’s account was terminated for assisting in the operations of selling gold or receiving money for items from ingame, I guarantee that he never did such thing. Now, on the other hand, if his account might have been hacked how could he know and get it back? his ticket is 121120-000062 for anyone willing to assist, thank you.

Quoting you both as you both make the same argument, essentially, and miss the same issue.

The issue is not with -current- content. No Ascended gear is required to finish every dungeon and kill every boss currently walking Tyria.

The issue is with -future- content. It was stated, when Ascended gear was announced, that Agony (and thus Agony resist) was something that would be involved in content going forward. It was not stated, one way or the other, if it would be required to even attempt future content, and it therefore becomes a simple question: grind Ascended and Agony resist now, so you are ready for the new content no matter what, or wait and see if it will be required, and hope that, if it is, enough other people waited that you can get groups to grind it out.

It is true that as of this moment in time, the grind heavy gear is not required to see any of the content in the game. But we don’t know when or if it will be, and Anet has not said one way or the other. A lot of folks saying it is required are basically taking the cautious path, assuming it will be and preparing for the worst.

The issue with this is that ArenaNet could have easily made this content require Agony resistance from the beginning as well, by making it some Mystic Forge thing and introducing Agony at fractal level 1. They didn’t; heck, they even made it so low levels can participate. Exotics aren’t even a requirement for the early difficulty levels. If they didn’t do it now, why do you think they’re magically going to start doing it in the future? None of the content in GW2 has been restricted like that. There is zero indication of ArenaNet ever restricting content like that, and it’s simply not helpful to base your argument on an assumption that they’ll magically start doing it.

AHHAHA You really think they did that for the players? Its just there to draw out the content, an additional carrot on another stick. Oh you want to see what agony is like? Hit me up 10 levels.

The Agony mechanic wasn’t introduced at the start of the dungeon so that everybody can experience the content. While one of the goals of the Fractals of the Mists dungeon was to provide some difficult content for players looking for a challenge, we also wanted the dungeon to be available for everybody to experience. While getting far into the dungeon requires agony resistance from ascended gear, the content was designed to provide challenging content, and to allow players to choose what difficulty they wanted to play at.

As for ascended gear, to reiterate what Chris has said (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/A-message-from-our-Studio-Design-Director-Chris-Whiteside), it’s not intended as a treadmill, but rather as a tier of rewards that can help bridge the gap between Exotics (a few hours of effort to acquire a piece) and Legendaries (hundreds of hours of effort to acquire one). They’re currently only available in the Fractals of the Mist Dungeon, but we’re going to be adding new ways to acquire them, both inside of WvW as well as elsewhere in PvE.

This is not a bug. This is a random drop from the daily rewards. The vials also have a chance to randomly drop from every creature in the zones.

This is something that existed prior to ascended gear, and was something that we saw happen all the time in GW1, even without any sort of gear progression. Some players, typically people who play the game a lot, tend to only want to play with other players that play like them. They require some sort of proof to get into their party, whether it be displaying your Lightbringer Title, equipping or linking some type of gear, or using some other method of showing that you have already done and are experienced with the content. While ascended gear might be the new excuse, this behavior happens regardless.

While this is not really something that we want to encourage, players do have the choice to play the game in the way they want. We can’t force those players to be all-inclusive in who they invite to the parties they create, and to be honest, doing so would probably make people even more unhappy than they are now, and lead to a lot of undesirable behavior.

I’ve looked into this and believe I have found the root cause. There were some achievements that were made, but not added to any of the categories that people could silently complete. Before the patch, these points would be added into your total. After the patch, these leftover achievements are not considered valid and therefore will not count towards your total. This is why only a small number of points are still missing. This is correct though, as those leftover achievements were never meant to be progressed anyways.

Still no help after countless posts here, as said Gaile, I can’t access the answer you gave me, didn’t receive it via mail and I have issues with creating a Support Account.

Here’s what I see in the ticket — let me know later if this does not work for you:

I see that the last time you have logged in to your Guild Wars account and spoke with Kimmes the Historian was a while ago. Please log in to the game and speak with (living) Kimmes the Historian and check out your monuments. Then log in to Guild Wars 2 and speak with (ghost) Kimmes the Historian and see if he’s got your items for you. If you still don’t have them please let us know so that we may look further in to the issue.

Hey guys, if you’re still stuck, I would first recommend browsing to Documents\Guild Wars 2 (or just your Guild Wars 2 installation folder if you’re on XP) and deleting your local.dat file. Once you’ve done this, go ahead and run a repair on the client:

1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 installation folder.

2. Right-click on “GW2.exe” and select “Create Shortcut.”

3. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 Repair.”

4. Right-click on this shortcut and select “Properties.”

5. Edit the “Target” line to include -repair at the end.

Note: Please make sure -repair is outside of the quotes

Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” -repair
Incorrectly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe -repair”

6. Once completed, click “Ok” to save your changes.

If you get an error trying to save, your target line may not have the correct format. Please try step 5 again.

7. Double click “Guild Wars 2 Repair” to start the repair process.

Once completed, please try starting Guild Wars 2 again.

I completely understand where you’re coming from here. It is true that there is a large amount of players experiencing performance based issues, but as I told another player who was experiencing a different type of issue, we are not trying to place the blame on your system, but there is any number of variables that could be contributing to performance based issues and so it is our job in Technical Support is to eliminate all possible variables in order to come to a resolution and then escalate the issue to another department if necessary. While many players may also be experiencing performance based issues, the individual system and hardware setups can make two issues that look similar at first actually turn out to be incredibly different meaning there will be a different resolution.

So I apologize if suggestions for driver updates are sounding very much like a broken record to you, but the best way for us to gather information and troubleshoot performance based issues is if we can assist you one on one. I would recommend creating a support ticket and letting the Technical Support Team know all possible troubleshooting steps that you have tried in addition to providing a Game Advisor report. You may be asked for some additional diagnostic information which you may not want to post in the forums.

In the end, if we’ve exercised all possible troubleshooting steps with no resolution found, we may be able to have this issue looked into by other departments. Again, the more information that we have to collect, the more information that we can provide to have this issue looked into if it is not in fact the player’s system.

Hi Kazega – “Bumping” is generally not allowed in the forums as often times the “bump” will simply get deleted.

In regards to this issue, the “siren” sound is a known issue that is still being looked into. However, there are still a couple of things that you can try in hopes of preventing the crashing and freezing. First, I would recommend updating your sound card driver.

I would also recommend adjusting your in-game audio settings. You can try changing Sound Quality from “High Quality” to “Fastest” to see if this has any affect.

Lastly, have you tried to force Guild Wars 2 to run without the sound engine? While obviously not ideal for playing, if you do not crash while running in this mode, we will have at least isolated the sound card as the potential cause and can go from there. To do this:

1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 installation folder.

2. Right-click on “GW2.exe” and select “Create Shortcut.”

3. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 No Sound.”

4. Right-click on this shortcut and select “Properties.”

5. Edit the “Target” line to include -nosound at the end.

Note: Please make sure -nosound is outside of the quotes

Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” -nosound
Incorrectly Formatted Example: "C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe -nosound "

From what I can see this does appear to be a solitary issue. Not to place the blame on your system, but there is any number of variables that could be contributing to crashes such as this and our job in Technical Support is to eliminate all possible variables in order to come to a resolution and then escalate the issue to another department if necessary. While many players may also be experiencing crash issues, the individual system setups and errors found in the crash report, along with the exact point and type of crash that occurs can make two issues that look similar at first actually turn out to be incredibly different.

That being said, I like to rule out the basics. I did not see anywhere that you had tried a repair. I would recommend first browsing to Documents\Guild Wars 2 and deleting your local.dat file. Once you’ve done that, run a repair on the game client.

Should this not resolve the issue for you, I’d like for you to try updating your DirectX. The game client requires the latest DirectX 9 components; this is true even if you have DirectX 10 or higher already installed. Please follow the instructions at Microsoft’s web site to install the newest DirectX 9 update:

Please be sure to save the file to your Windows desktop. Then create a new folder on the desktop and extract the DirectX files into it. Once they have been extracted open the new folder and use the DXsetup file to install DirectX.

I’ll second what the players said above:

  • There have been a lot of updates lately: content, bug fixes, etc.
  • Don’t worry, this is an unusual week — you won’t normally see this.
  • The updates usually download really quickly and they are ever so much better than the “Sit out of the game for 8 hours” of the old days!
  • You need to get the updates to be able to play. Can’t pick and choose, you want to be in the new, sparkly version every time!

Hi King Toker – If what you are describing is network lag, your system will have no affect on any connectivity issues experienced in game. If you run a traceroute and ping to a Guild Wars 2 ip (can be done by typing in /ip in chat while in game) you should be able to see your ping along with any packet loss found and where this occurs.

Sometimes, a conflicting application can also contribute to lag, though generally this would indicate either there is an issue with your hardware (modem and/or router), the connection service, or your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

You can usually test this by connecting directly to your modem via Ethernet cable or trying to play from a different location such as at a friend or relative’s house.
