The 9/24 update has:

I don’t know if it also has a retroactive fix for players who have already the step, but we do plan on giving players who have already done the step updated loot.

I don’t normally care one way or the other about voice acting in video games, but props to the guy who was voicing the male Charr PCs. He was definitely channeling something during the end of “Thicker than Water.”

That was Ron Yuan. He did a great job.

Hi Stretch – You have quite a few applications running and so I would like to rule out the possibility that there is another program interfering with the game connection. To do this, we use a Windows command called “MSCONFIG.”

Please note, this command will not uninstall any applications from your computer. All MSCONFIG does is prevent these applications from automatically starting when Windows boots up.

To do this:

1. Press and hold the Windows key and then hit the R key. This should bring up the Run dialog box.

2. Type “MSCONFIG” without the quotes, and click “OK.” This should open the System Configuration Utility.

3. Click on the “Services” tab and check the “Hide All Microsoft Services” check box near the bottom, then click the “Disable All” button. (You MUST click “Hide all Microsoft Services”)

4. Next go to the “Startup” tab and click the “Disable All” button.

5. Once these items are all disabled, click the “OK” button and you will get a prompt to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

6. Once you return to Windows, please try connecting to the game again. If your issue is not resolved by using MSCONFIG, please generate a new Game Advisor report prior to disabling MSCONFIG. That way, we can see what, if anything wasn’t disabled by these steps.

To reverse these settings, simply run MSCONFIG again and click “Normal Startup” on the first window labeled “General.”

Note: If you need a specific application to run with Windows but still want to use MSCONFIG, just follow the above instructions and on step 4, re-check any application you feel needs to start with Windows. Examples would be wireless connection software, mouse or keyboard applications or even security applications. Please note that security applications can often be a contributing factor to such issues. If you haven’t done so already, please also disable any Anti-virus, Firewall or other security applications for testing purposes.

@Vytautas Kaz – I would like for you to try doing a Winsock reset. To do so, please try the steps below:

Click the “Start” button to bring up the Start Menu.

2. Type in CMD into the “Search programs and files” field but do not hit enter. Doing this will change your start menu to show the program “cmd.exe.”

3. Right-click on “cmd.exe” and select “Run as Administrator.”

4. Once the DOS prompt opens, type in:

netsh winsock show catalog >C:\LSP.txt (Or copy paste)

This should reset your Winsock and save the results to C:\LSP.txt. Once saved, restart your PC and try connecting again.

@Steven – I noticed you have both Avast and Malwarebytes enabled. I would first start with disabling the two to see if you are able to complete the download. In addition I might also suggest connecting directly to the modem via Ethernet cable.

There is a 4th enemy in WvW - Lag

Hi all,

An encounter with Lagzilla is always rough and it’s a tricksy beast that can manifest for a variety of reasons. Ultimately the experience of lag comes down to one or more of client performance, network issues, and server performance. If the lag you’re experiencing is a result of client performance issue then turning down your graphics settings, running at a lower resolution, etc. can help. If not then there’s unfortunately very little you can do. Let me explain a bit more about the different issues that can cause lag:

Client Performance
When your client is trying to do too much work (usually this comes down to animating and rendering the game world since that’s the bulk of the work done on the client, though it can be other tasks as well) the time it takes to create each frame goes up and, thus, your frame rate goes down. When the frame rate drops a little the game just doesn’t feel as smooth but when it drops a lot (say, into the single digits) then the experience can start to feel like lag in that you have to wait longer to get feedback about your actions. Mostly though, this situation just feels choppy. You can check your frame rate in Gw2 on the options menu and if it’s unacceptably low then changing your client settings may help.

Network Issues
The internet is a big, complex, self-healing network. It truly is a marvel of the modern world. Despite that it’s designed to be fully redundant and self healing the internet still runs into problems sometimes. Sometimes the server you’re connecting to is just too far away and thus it takes your packets a long time to make it to the server and back. Other times a fault with some portion of the network along the path from you to the server can introduce delays or cause packets to simply be lost. Any of those issues can cause a feeling of lag by increasing the time between when you try to do something and when it happens on the server as well as increasing the time between when something happens on the server and when you see it on your client. While some amount of latency is just a fact of life on the internet (nothing is instantaneous, curse you speed of light!) serious issues with the network are relatively infrequent. When they happen it’s no fun at all, but thankfully there are lots of people at lots of network providers who spend their time preventing these issues and fixing them when they occur so they’re usually fairly short lived.

Server Performance
Server performance is a lot like client performance in terms of lag. The work the server is doing is different, of course, but fundamentally it still has a limited amount of time to present any given frame of the game and if it takes too long doing that work then things start to back up and everyone on the server experiences lag. In large WvW fights, such as when the majority of the players on the map are fighting over Stonemist Castle, this is most likely what’s causing you to experience lag. When a lot of players are in relatively close proximity to each other the server has to do more work because all the interactions (or, in some cases, potential interactions) between those players need to be calculated. This is the N-squared problem that you may hear computer scientists going on about all the time, assuming you hang out with computer scientists. Of course we’ve done what we can to optimize these processes but at the end of the day more work is more work, no matter how you slice it, so there will always be some player density that’s just too much for the system to handle in the time allotted. Ultimately we end up in a balancing act between trying to allow the maximum number of players into WvW and minimizing the amount of lag that players encounter.

I hope that this information is helpful when trying to determine if changing your client settings will have a positive impact on lag you may be experiencing. All of us at ArenaNet are also gamers and, believe me, we hate lag just as much as you do! We are constantly looking for ways to improve performance and the work of optimization never stops.

They hired a lot of professional and very talented voice actors.

That’s true. Also, the imdb list is incomplete. There are more than 100 voice actors who worked with us on GW2.

I think part of the issue some people have with cinematic conversation VO is the presentation. There are some folks who can’t get past the two-shot, stage play view, so that ruins it for them. Also, some of the actors would have benefited from better contextual notes, which is why some of their lines sound “off.”

To the OP: Is it mostly the cinematic conversation VO that bothers you, or all the writing and VO in the game (ambient, event, etc.)?

If Mr Stein is still keeping an eye on this thread I’d like to ask:
Was the writing in this game mainly done with a pre-teen/young teen demography in mind? I bet you have some really good writers on your team as well as being one yourself, and I understand the necessity of writing on the same level as the target demography but… please tell me you guys wrote this with crowd pleasing marketing in mind

I prefer a more mature tone where appropriate, which is why the dynamic event and ambient scene dialogue (hopefully) sound that way. My team didn’t set the tone for the personal story, which is why you may notice a difference in voice.

As someone who has only played through with humans, I’m interested on trying charr’s due to the TC’s points. I felt human’s story was a bit bland and unpredictable, it was basically white-and-black politics, which made it quite dry. If you’re going to give political tones to your narrative, you need shades of grey and some kind of humanistic drama and thought-provoking issues, to be any interesting, imo.

I also felt human’s story archs were disjointed from each other, and the characters weren’t given proper time to stick with you and develop. If this is any different for charr’s story, I’ll want to try it out.

Yeah, a little subtlety never hurts.

Try the charr story. You may enjoy your time with your selected warband character, who generally has more screen time and dialogue than most of the human “best friend” characters.

If the writing team handled the editorial duties, does that include making sure that all of the branches a player could choose tied in logically? Only reason I ask is because on the sylvari side, sometimes it seemed like a choice I made in the previous story step or a few story steps back didn’t actually happen from the perspective of the world/dialogue.

Meeting a character a few quests back, then being reintroduced to that character as if we never met….credit for what my character did being given over to another character, etc.

No. The story team was responsible for its continuity. The writing team merely copy edited cinematic conversations, story dialogue, and other elements of text. If we noticed a logic gap we’d let them know, but it’s sometimes hard to connect the dots when you’re editing stuff in bulk and not seeing it in the context of the game.

The story team did frequent playthroughs, though. I imagine that they fixed almost all of the continuity issues before launch.

Is there any chance of these issues being reviewed and taken care of later on, or is this a case of “we’re fine with how it is” and then you’ll surreptitiously do better in an expansion?

If a character is saying something out of context, we may be able to fix the issue by editing or cutting that bit of VO, or hooking up the right audio file if we have it in the depot. We have a small backlog of text and VO bugs on the writing team’s plate, some of which involve the personal story. (The writing team generally handles text and VO bugs, regardless of whether we originated the content.) We’ll fix what we can, and we appreciate everyone’s patience.

This is going to sound extremely rude to the efforts of your personal story team, but maybe the personal story should be handed over to your general writing team. Because the dialogue for the ambient scenes and dynamic event dialogue was far and away the best dialogue in the game.

We’re in the process of analyzing the final version of the personal story, and looking at ways to improve the writing, voice acting, and overall presentation going forward. My team and/or I will likely be more involved in that regard.

Thanks for the compliments on the ambient and event dialogue. We worked hard on it.

Hey everyone. Thanks for your feedback and we all greatly appreciate this constructive criticism as you deal with these frustrations.

To respond to this I can say that, yes, we’re aware of the general issues that have been reported with many Dynamic Events and skill challenges. They frustrate us as much as they frustrate you – most if not all of us devs are playing the game right along with you, and these content blockers can certainly be challenging to everyone’s enjoyment of the game experience.

I would like take this opportunity to clarify one thing I’ve seen discussed here on the forums and in game chat. It’s just not true that the higher level or other content wasn’t tested. It was. Thoroughly.

But even with the Beta Weekend Events and our own internal testing, there’s really only so much that we can do to simulate the number of times that events have to run in sequence once a game like Guild Wars 2 goes live. In particular, Arenanet has made iteration one of our key development philosophies which has the benefit of promoting the publishing of better in-game content, but which has the consequence of us doing many builds a day while we’re developing. In many cases the events that are breaking are doing so because of compounding errors that are hard to catch when you’re developing in such a fluid environment. We’re seeing a number of these blocking issues in events that have undergone extensive internal testing, but which have never needed to run dozens of times in a row, because of how frequently we developers were iterating and generating new builds.

We’re working as hard as we can to find and fix the biggest blocking issues, and it’s one of our top priorities to ensure that you can complete each map and play in events without running into these kinds of issues. We sincerely appreciate your patience, and your detailed reports on anything you come across that isn’t working as it should.

Guild Wars 2 has some camera smoothing built into it. It is generally more intrusive than it needs to be, but it also has a bug with it that makes it feel really bad for people with specific mouse look styles, like mine. This bug, and reducing the amount of smoothing is being actively looked at, but must be done carefully and tested carefully as its impact will effect every single player. Thanks for your patience.

p.s. These are not the only camera issues, but are far and away the most egregious so we will address them first.

First of all there are a handful of targeting bugs that we are addressing right now.

Once those are solved we will try and design a stickier targeting option for those players that want to keep their target a little bit better.

Personal tip since this happens to me a lot. I lose my target a lot because I am ground targeting and click a bunch of times to fire it off, after the skill has fired, the subsequent left clicks end up deselecting. I have started using my mouse to aim, but double tapping any ground target skills on the keyboard which has mitigated a lot of my issues.

Giving more tokens or reducing the price is unfair to those people who already played dozens of dungeons and maybe even bought gear for those tokens.

And not doing it is unfair to the game because it makes one of the more repeatable content types feel like more of a grind than it needs to. We weren’t going to release a perfect game, and can’t let things live this stop us from improving the experience for the majority of the players.

We need to adjust the PC chatter frequency so certain lines play less often. It’s on our to-do list.

While you’re at it, how about adding an option to disable it? No offense, I love the game, but I don’t really appreciate hearing these lines ever.

We’ve talked about either implementing a frequency slider or giving people the option to mute player chatter, but it all comes down to programming and UI resources. A few of us wanted it in for ship, but too many higher priority issues needed attention.

I don’t want to be that guy that claims he can do so much better than the writing team Anet already has, so I won’t. That’s essentially the point of this long ramble I’m about to go on. It’s not that I think I can do better, but I think that they can do better, by showing that they already have!

The writing team as an entity didn’t write or design the personal story content. The personal story team, which was made up of many designers (including a lore and continuity designer and one writer from my team) were responsible for generating that. My one embedded writer helped write or revise dialogue in many of the story arcs, but there were a lot of people on that team who contributed voiced and unvoiced text.

The writing team mostly serviced the personal story team in an editorial capacity up through launch. We’d copy edit scripts as they came over, and were involved with voice-over recording sessions (fielding questions from the voice director, providing context, etc.), but we/I didn’t create the characters or plan out the arcs. Thanks for the kind words, but I want to make sure the personal story team gets credit for that. I like to think that the writing team helped polish up the dialogue where we could, but our involvement was mostly supportive.

The writing team was mostly responsible for writing ambient scenes and dynamic event dialogue, and copy editing or revising everything else in the game that came from the other teams generating content (personal story, dungeon, WvW, etc.).

1. Custom bidding is not risk free.
Yes, I’m speaking in terms of turning a profit from putting a bid then sell the item, making profit as long as the spread is sufficiently wide. I do farm items with wide spread. For items with higher transaction volume, the spread usually don’t last long. For slow moving item, there can be a 40% spread like you say. I am merely fronting the payment to those who have no patient to post and wait for their item to sell, and earning premium for it. Although it is profitable and relatively low risk, it is not no risk at all. If the flavor of the month changes or if A-net changes something that impacts the demand of said item, I stand at losing. Also, I suffer from liquidity risk if the item doesn’t sell fast enough where I could had invested in a lower return investment and flip it quickly. This is how the market works.

2. Crafting is not supposed to be profitable.
I’ll put the blame on crafting being too easy to level and a global market. Not necessarily a bad thing as I’ve manage to buy what I can’t craft at an affordable price.

3. A ceiling/floor hurts the economy
There is a complicated explanation that I don’t think you guys are interested in hearing…I don’t know how to make it simple.

4. Transparency is better for the market.
Ok, this I misunderstood what you’re trying to say. What you propose is an auction system with a range of reservation price. I must say it is one of the more interesting ideas I’ve seen in forum post. No comment on that.

5. I just described the stock market! What’s the problem?
To many (me), trading is a game within a game…

6. These are real people, therefore it functions like a real economy.
All the factors you’ve listed determines price, true. From an economist’s perspective, we look at things on a more general view..so advertising, location and such are not considered in the model. What you describe falls more on to marketing…and looking more from a single company’s perspective. For an economic model of any kind, human behavior is an important factor. A game economy simply follows a much simpler model (still complicated) with less variables, and some unique constrains. The underlying foundation applies to both. Example: people prefer to pay less than to pay more for a homogeneous goods, price depreciates when supply exceeds demand. Prices of goods are all driven by people’s action.

Wazabi is almost dead on here.
Just a couple of things I would add. You’re last paragraph is correct, but only to a certain degree inside a game. There is much more examples in the game, than in real life, of people deciding not to maximize profit, or to have odd trade offs for personal preference inside the game that people don’t usually have in real life. People are still people in a sense, but people’s character in games often have very different preferences than the person in real life. I would argue that we have to be careful to remember that motivations in the game aren’t necessarily the same as motivations in real life.

Secondly, not related to Wazabi being correct, is that applying pressure through the trading system to attempt to modify scarcity of an item in the game isn’t the way to solve problems. If an item should be more scarce, then the faucet/sink of that item is off, not the manner in which it’s traded.

Overall great discussions here everyone, we have a set of clearly educated and intelligent people in this forums and it rocks.

Yes, it appears fixed. Will be in the 10/1 update. (Tested with an engineer to make sure there wasn’t something class specific going on.)

Hello all, I have an announcement. On Midnight PDT Monday, the temporary Mystic Forge recipes that create Mystic Chests will come to an end. The Mystic Chests were fantastic and served their purpose, but their time is over. Players may still combine the ingredients from existing Mystic Chests, but no more chests will be created.

I think we already have a couple of similar threads, so no need for another one.

Yes, we’re aware of this map exploit, and are actively working on it. It will be fixed soon.

Thank you for reporting this. Honesty is always much appreciated.

I was testing out the security from web account and ingame.

Gaile—

First, I want to say how much we really appreciate the work your doing to try to help us get these old tickets taken care of.

There is another thread in the game bugs section about the specific guild issues we are having that some of these old tkts are on.
Six days ago (bottom of pg 19 of 29), Anet staff member CameronDunn, put a little blip that the guild issues were being looked into and he would keep us updated… and nothing since.
There has not been any mention of fixes on the game update notes, either.

I actually got an email from the guild wars 2 team encouraging me to join a guild for the social aspects.
(One would think they would have held off on sending that email out until the guild issues were fixed, lol— it’s just going to invite more tkts for your overloaded support staff.)

Is there anyway you can get us an update on the guild issues fix?

Thank you

Can you give me that link? I’m nose-down right now, and I’d appreciate being able to get there without searching.

Update on guild related topics

Hey all,

After talking to Jon Peters, I would like to give you a headsup on 2 things which are guild related.
Some of you might have gotten an error when you where already in 4 guilds and tried to join another one. We do currently have a cap of 4 guilds per account. We would like to raise this limit in the future, but I cannot give you any ETA on this. We will edit the current error message to better reflect the fact that you have hit the cap.

The other topic is guild influence and changing servers. While we try to balance out server population we have asked you to switch servers. We are aware that you’re losing your guild upgrades and influence in the process is a barrier for doing this, so we are investigating if there is a way for us to mitigate this. Just wanted to let you know that we aware of this and are not ignoring it. Alas, I can not give you an ETA on this either.

Gold missing from Inventory [merged]

I’ll post some tips again, because they helped a LOT of players, and also share some info. Your gold is not across your account, but on each character. Sometimes when a player looks in each character individually he/she finds the “missing” gold on another character. I hope you’ll give this a try.

Additionally, what we’re finding is that sometimes there is lag in a transaction — not just a few seconds, but occasionally an hour or more! So before assuming that the issue is permanent:

  • Check all your characters.
  • Log out of the game completely.
  • Check again several hours later.
  • Be aware that even if you cancel a transaction, you will still be dinged for the 15% fee, so that that into account when calculating what you should have.

Having said all that, we should be able to look at logs and see if we can figure out what happened. But the reason I’m offering the suggestions above is that we’ve done some of that research and we’ve found the player got his gold or stuff and all is well. So I’d like to be sure I don’t ask for dev time unless there’s a real issue.

I’ll speak with our expert on this subject and get an update on this.
