Is GW1 still relevant?

I am LOVING GW2. I played a bit of GW1 Prophecies, but never really sunk my teeth into any of the expansions. I was wondering if I should give GW1 another try, for the sake of the lore and gameplay, but I’m concerned that maybe no one’s playing it anymore because of 2. Is that the case? Or is this like Everquest where there’s still a strong community in its predecessor?

Some of this has to be perspective, too, though.

That single, lonely bandit? He might have mad weapon skills. That menacing ice beast? Might have an easy-to-shatter shell. That boar in the woods? Could be tenacious and freakishly powerful.

If we’re talking about reality here, there are seldom visual cues to let one know how dangerous one particular thing is to another.

All that being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing some more variance or individuality in certain monster designs. But, in this case, be careful what you wish for.

Out-of-game/browser-based play

I would love to see GW2 steal a page from Neverwinter (since Neverwinter seemed to steal so many pages from GW2, anyway) and have some kind of mini-game or game extension for internet browsers, so that office dudes such as myself with a few minutes (hours) to kill can spend it in their favorite fantasy world.

In Neverwinter, crafting is managed by NPCs who work for you (a little similar to how it’s managed in The Old Republic, but even more hands-off). Obviously gathering is going to have to be done in game, but I for one would love to see the crafting production doable from a browser window when not in game. Furthermore, a page can be taken from WoW as well and allow for auction house access outside of the game, as well.

I can definitely see some question marks about how this would be handled in GW2. I also know that there would have to be some studying done to analyze the impact of such play on the player-driven economy. So I’m not going to hold my breath, here. The main idea is this: I love Guild Wars 2. I hate work. Let’s find a way to have my love of one make my hatred of the other more tolerable. Thanks!

I'm now grinding dailies without noticing

IMO adding some “shiny” rewards for AP was a mistake. Some people who dont like to farm dailies and such will now do it becouse they will feel it is needed to obtain the rewards. After a while the risk of them getting burned out will increase. In same manner as there are people who got burned out and left after farming Orr for few hours each day (“hey, I need my mats for legendary!”) or doing 30 CoF runs per day (“hey, I need gold to buy all that stuff!”). Some people enjoy doing achievements just for the sake of it and then it all works fine. But now you push into it hordes of players who dont want to do it but still will becouse there is something shiny waiting for them. Expect lots of forum AP QQ in the nearest future.

The problem is not the game, it’s the players. Everything that happens in a videogame is a CHOICE. Nobody from Anet is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to gather materials for a daily achievement. I have absolutley no pity for people who complain about “having” to do stuff they don’t like for something they want. They are CHOSING to make themselves miserable. Anet should not be punished for wanting to reach out to different kinds of gamers.

Oh but I agree with you 100%. But quality of players you describe is something inevitable and should be taken into account when making decissions. My case is, the free AP rewards will actually produce more QQ than if there would be nothing offered instead.

That’s fair. I didn’t mean any disrespect.

I guess the whole concept just grinds my gears…GW2 is an MMO, a virtual world. And just like our real world, you have to make choices about what you are and are not willing to put up with. The idea that people are making choices to NOT have fun, then blaming the game for the choices they made? Ugh…

Yesterday, I came home late and launched GW2. Given my day, my brain was in off mode.

The guild was active in WvW so I joined. I had my part of fun. Great. I played for about 1 hour, then I saw I had only three dailies out of five done (and only one WvW-related daily).

I checked the hour and thought “yeah, I can do AC story before going to bed”. At least I do a dungeon, not some stupid gatherer/craft daily. 20 minutes later I’m out of the dungeon and I’m at 4 achievements out of five.

What’s left? Oh cool, some Maguuma event and some underwater killer. That will be easy and I won’t do those stupid gatherer and crafts. I go to my underwater spot in Maguuma Jungle and farm mobs. Daily done.

Additionally, I’m now at 3 events out of 4. It would be too bad not to finish it. Let’s finish and see if the flame thingy is on in Metrica Province. Aye it is. Good, I’ve done my dailies.

Hey, curious, what were the other daily achievements? Oh, only craft / gatherer left? (+ kill dollies, other wvw achi) Easy, well, hey 2 achievement points are 2 achievement points. So let’s go to Frostgorge, gather and craft the result.

Cheers, it’s done. I played two hours. Good. Time to log off, yeah I’m in time. Good job, I’m now closer to the next achievement level.

What did I do in my dailies that I liked?
- WvW
- Soloing a champion in Metrica Province

What did I do in my dailies that I’m not fond of?
- Gathering again
- Crafting again
- Killing underwater again
- Farming mobs in Metrica Province again
- Doing the same events in Metrica Province again
- Doing a dungeon story again where I’d have preferred an explorable.

By doing my dailies I’m not rewarded for playing I like to play, but I’m rewarded for the way Anet wants me to play.

Even more now that the achievements reward gold, laurels and other stuff. My brain was off and what did I do? I maximized my achievement gains. That’s not how I want to play, but that’s how I’m playing when my brain’s off. I didn’t enjoy the parts of the daily we have to do.

Sounds like a personal problem to me.

Anet wants you to play WHATEVER WAY YOU WANT. That’s why there are achievements for so many different types of activities. YOU are the one who chose to do things you don’t like doing just so you can get more…points.

wtf racial skills doing in this game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Personally, I wish that the races did play a role on how you experience the game.

For example, I think that asurans should be able to access more difficult / cramped locations.

I think that Norns and Charr should run the fastest.

I think that Sylvari should innately regenerate.

I agree that the racial skills could be a lot cooler.

God could you IMAGINE the outcry? Nerf this, buff that, this ain’t fair, that’s an exploit…yeesh.

I play with my teenage daughter, she’s setup with a PC and her own account. I think it’s perfect for her and she really likes it. I’m glad it’s not all blood and gore. My problems are the low lifes who find out she’s actually a female player playing a female character.

You should teach her how to turn on the charm (if she doesn’t already know). You know what kind of awesome stuff people have given me for just assuming I’m female for playing a female character? I gotta say, it’s pretty nice.

I don’t feel too bad about it, either.

500 AP for GW1 Hall of Monuments Intended?

These achievements are now giving 50 AP per completed achievement instead of the previous 2, is this a bug or working as intended.

Personally i think these should not reward any AP at all, (just titles + perks) as i feel i shouldn’t be forced to play GW1 to remain highscore competitive on GW2.

I’m not gonna lie…I read this and puked in my mouth a little bit.

Yep, I’m one of the very few, it seems, that prefer guild runs simply because I can request a full run and not a speed run without getting booted.

I don’t like joining a group for X path and feel like my whole job is to follow as closely as I can while we sprint through everything, stack on this one exploit spot, jump here, jump there, all the while it is obvious this wasn’t the intended mechanic and we skipped almost everything.

I won’t lie: there is a time and a place for speed runs. But sometimes I want to experience the entire dungeon, for, gee I dunno, fun, but nooooooo I’m the noob apparently if I don’t want to speed run literally everything.

Thank god for having a good guild with people that get what this game is all about, that’s all I can say.

What guild would that happen to be, btw? I’m new and am looking for a good guild…

This is really something..best patch to date?

The community has been clamoring for a LFG tool of some sort..anything! Do we one? No.

The community is scratching at the walls for a scavenger hunt. Do we have one? No.

The community is wishing for the “dungeon team” to come back. Do we have any new perma dungeons, or revamped dungeons outside of AC? No.

People are asking for new zones and content..Cantha and Elona. Do we have it? No.

No one asked for living story. No one is crying each week for more living story content. No one is crying for more fluff and mini games.

No. Their development direction is assed backwards.

And you know they aren’t working on that stuff because….?

Living Story, so much as I understand it, is being developed by just a fraction of the dev pool. What do you think the rest of them are working on? More to the point, how long do YOU think it should take?

I’m kindof a newb, so sorry if I’m over-simplifying this…but is it possible the problem isn’t that the game is broken because you can’t put conditions on a creature, but that a creature already has conditions on it and you are unwilling to adapt?

When I’m fighting a big monster, I’ll glance up at the conditions it’s suffering from. If it’s already suffering from a condition, I don’t use a skill that inflicts that condition. If a creature is suffering from every condition I can give it, I switch over to my daggers and start stabbing away! Is that harder to do at higher levels or something?

GW2 unlikely to get expansions [Interview]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Eddie G.8731

Eddie G.8731

There are a lot of assumptions being made here:

1. There will NEVER be expansions, even though the wording in the interview is “we’re not thinking about it right now.”

2. ALL Living Story content will be the exact same in volume.

3. There will not be any safeguards or procedures to insure quality of new content, including the devs playing their own game.

4. The Living Story content teams will only and always take only two weeks to make content, and that ANet doesn’t have a rotating schedule.

5. Living Story content is the ONLY new content that has ever or will ever be developed.

Now, I know the internet is a great place to panic, but seriously, folks, let’s think this through. Do ANY of those above assumptions sound reasonable?

Leave living world out of WVW

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Eddie G.8731

Eddie G.8731

I love it when people playing a video game talk about “being forced” to do anything.

Lol.

Ah, yes, it’s the scale of cause and event though, isn’t it?

I mean, am I forced to play any of GW2? no. But I am, so what then? Am I forced to get the world completion achievement? No. But I decide I’d like to, so what then? Ah, in order to complete this achievement, yes, I AM forced to go into WvW.

Depends which step of the ladder you are on.

But no, strictly speaking, no one is forced to do anything they don’t want to when it comes to playing a game. But for the sake of getting any achievement at all, then there are certain goals you are required (yes, forced) to reach.

This is not a bad thing necessarily. I’ve made a thread on the basis that if you don’t like something in this game there isn’t someone holding a sword over you telling you you must do it anyway.

However, within the parameters of this sort of thing, like the JP in WvW or the world completion achievement, I see no reason why the PvP and the PvE modes of gameplay are somehow overlapping. And that is what I, personally, am questioning here.

I meant no disrespect. I think if one wants to hunt achievements, that’s a perfectly fine objective.

I guess, for me though, I look at it like this: achievements are achievements. When there’s a list of PvE achievements, that means those achievements are found in the PvE portion of the game, not “these are achievements only PvE players should strive for.” Same goes for PvP achievements. It’s not “these are achievements only for PvP players;” it’s “these are achievements that, to get, one must enter a PvP zone.”

Personally, I see no shame in someone saying “I have gotten every achievement in the PvE part of the game.” It’s still impressive as hell to me. And if some special, limited-time whatever achievement is in PvP Land, and one isn’t cool with entering PvP Land, then don’t get it. You’re not a lesser human being. It’s not the game’s fault you don’t want to go there. It’s not yours, either. It’s a decision YOU made. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Keep in mind while you are on these forums that you often hear a vocal minority – don’t ever let it get you down! Many players like you and I don’t even bother going to the forums because they are too busy enjoying the game!

Oh yes, I remember (not too) fondly from my WoW days…people who enjoy the game are actually playing it. Forums tend to be for two kinds of people: haters, and people who wish they were playing the game right now but can’t (because, say, they’re at work).
