Why does raiding feel so unfriendly?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Kraggy.4169

i’m glad it’s there for those who need that experience as it retains quality hardcore players.

Not sure how the presence of an elite who are often openly hostile to people trying to start off raiding (as the OP has accurately commented on) is an asset to the 95+% of players who can’t get in or don’t want to get into this small niche content; the vast majority will never interact with this elite in any way that advances their [the majority] game experience.

As a non-raider myself all raiding means to me is scarce dev. resources being used to create content I’ll never get a chance to see, as won’t the vast majority of players: only WOW of all the major MMOs has a ‘raiding’ community above single-digit percentage and that’s because of the tiered raiding system, which the vocal elites shout down in most other MMOs when the subject is raised.

Did GW2 lose its identity?

I used to love this game with a passion up until hot release. The game went a completely different direction some loved some hated. Truth is we just need to wait for next expansion and see what we get. I just hope they stop wasting time on raids for such a small player base. Anyone who actually plays this game for raids is simply wrong because if you like raids you should be playing WoW or ff14. We need better content for people who left those games or don’t play those games to not have the companies dedication going three

Totally agree, GW2 wasn’t WOW and the like BECAUSE it didn’t have a ‘raid community’ to which the devs had to pander, sadly HoT changed that for the worse.

Some of us don’t really care about competitive endgame. That’s why we don’t PvP. I care about story, lore, exploration, and sometimes achievements, also curious on how to break maps and glitch to get outside of the boundaries. PvP just doesn’t scratch any of those itches. Simple as that.

Pretty much applies to me too .. I’m totally not an end-gamer, for me it’s the journey not the arrival, and PVP has absolutely nothing that makes me want to even try it.

Legendary Recipe Adjustments

A Message from Matt Pennebaker

Hello Legendary Crafters!

I wanted to give you all a heads up about an upcoming change. We discovered a bug in the crafting recipes for the new legendary weapons Eureka and Shooshadoo. One of them used a Visionary Crystal and one used a Legendary Inscription to craft the third tier precursor. Neither was wrong but it was actually intended that both items be used in the crafting process. To resolve this, when the next legendary weapon is released, it and all weapons going forward will use a new item, the Visionary Inscription, in their third tier precursors. The Visionary Inscription is crafted from a Visionary Crystal and a Legendary Inscription. In addition, we will adjust the recipe for Eureka’s and Shooshadoo’s third tier precursors to use this new item in order to maintain consistency between all of the recipes. If you are working on Eureka or Shooshadoo now, you will have until the next weapon is released to craft it using the current recipe.

So, a bug caused a reward to be obtainable in an unintended way, the classic definition you use for the word ‘exploit’ and you tell people NEVER to make use of an exploit for personal advantage, and you usually remove people’s ‘ill-gotten gains’ whether or not they do it knowingly .. so tell me, why are you now condoning people EXPLOITING a bug for personal advantage nor are you removing the rewards so obtained?

It was impossible from a budget standpoint. Having to write 5 letters per dungeon meant we’d have to write 40 letters total instead of 8. From a logistical standpoint it would have driven up costs for localization and editing. These mails were generated very late in the development process. Multiplying them would have resulted in the wordcount ballooning by 5 times.

Maybe you’d make better use of your scarce writing resources than to have them write raid ‘lore’ which only a small minority of players will ever experience and even fewer will ever bother reading on their charge through the instance to get to the phat lewt most of them are there for.

Just saying.

Anyone who thinks otherwise isn’t a true raider, and shouldn’t even have a say in what raids should be. ArenaNet’s main goal with raids should be to satisfy RAIDERS, not non-raiders. You guys have literally the other 98% of the game. Let us have our 3 tiny instances.

I’m very much a non-raider, I couldn’t care a kitten for the phet lewt they have and which some raiders seem to think makes them somehow special for having.

I play for the story, and if story/lore is locked inside raids then I lose out .. there’s no point putting story/lore aspects into content 99.9% which I suggest of those who play it aren’t remotely interested in, as it doesn’t provide any ‘rewards’ they can kitten with.

Is this game raid centric now?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kraggy.4169

Kraggy.4169

No. It’s higher than most RPG/MMOs, but far below 20% of the total community, near as anyone can estimate (probably closer to 10%).

And where do you get numbers to support that assertion that raiders in GW2 are a larger proportion than in other games?

The only MMO to my knowledge that ever admitted the pitifully low percentage of players that raided was WOW around the time of BC when Blizzard admitted only 15% of players had ever been in raids and only 5% of players had cleared raids.

That’s why Blizzard introduced LFR and tiered raids, so that they could push up the percentages (of course, most ‘real raiders’ consider the LFR tier toy-town raiding).

I see no reason to think GW2 is any different, indeed if anything a smaller percentage of players would be expected to raid in GW2 as raiding is the antithesis of what GW2 originally offered.

Of course, if HOT drove away large numbers of players who don’t want hard-core type gaming raiding is designed for (and HOT open world is entirely group-centric, again entirely different from GW2 pre-HOT) then the percentage of raiders would be higher in a smaller playerbase.

  • Output from the raids team isn’t coming at the expense of other projects in development. Raids are made independently of Living World. We do communicate regularly with that team (and we share some resources and assets in both directions) but neither team prevents the other from doing its job.

It’s still the case though that any of your scarce development resources used to produce raid content played by only a small fraction of players .. in ALL MMOs raiders are small minorities, I see no reason to think GW2 is different .. means less content for the majority who are non-raiders; move the raid devs. to non-raid work and we’d get more non-raid content for the majority, thus this comment of yours is simply not true.

Case in point: had you not dedicated devs to the raids then no doubt LS3 could have been completed by now and played by vastly more than will ever step foot inside non-cleared raid instances!

Alpine Border Land Back - Spawn Treb Bug

in WvW

Posted by: Kraggy.4169

Kraggy.4169

There are many reasons this wasn’t addressed when Alpine was brought back:

  • Players were genuinely nostalgic for Alpine. Virtually all demands were just for Alpine to return, with no changes. There was no outcry that it was important to change Alpine to prevent spawn trebs before bringing the map back. Had we made a change to the layout of citadel to prevent this, perhaps we’d just be seeing a different set of angry threads, those mad that "we made a change that nobody asked for, dumbing down the map and removing a perfectly valid tactic. "

Just be philosophical about it .. it’s simply another truth about MMO development seen in MMO forums throughout time .. pander to one vocal minority and you simply provoke another one.

Severe Lag Spikes and DCs in World Events

in Account & Technical Support

For the last week I’ve experienced massive lag spikes .. up to 5 secs or more .. in world events such as Tequatl, Karka, HOT zone events such as MoM in DS and even just now in a daily world event in Fields of Ruin, on an EU server.

Mostly I just get lag spikes, a few times though I’ve DCed.

This is happening on two different broadband connections using two different ISPs. Tracerts never show a routing problem, with ‘ping’ times round 35ms on the final hop on one ISP and around 29ms on the other one.

I run two PCs other than the one I’m playing on, one per ISP and loop tracert continuously, their outputs remain constant even while in-game I’m seeing lag spikes of several seconds at times.

And yes, I’m using the 64-bit client and have been for months. Before the last week I’ve had barely one DC a fortnight and no cases of lag spikes in the order I’m seeing now, playing pretty much every day.

This is getting annoying...

Selling SAB

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kraggy.4169

Kraggy.4169

Alright, it’s about time I commented on this.

As of now we don’t have a problem with players doing this. While the late join is unintended, if players want to pay for this service, that’s fine. It does trivialize the skins some, but this isn’t any different than the skins from purchasing a raid run or a dungeon run (which we also are ok with). As long as the transaction is completed and players are getting what they paid for, fine.

However, that doesn’t mean that we aren’t going to fix this. A fix is in the works right now, and that fix may happen before SAB closes or be there for the next time the festival opens.

So, another classic example of GW2’s basic philosophy: “exploit early, exploit often”, before the exploit is closed down.

At least this Anet post clearly proves it IS an ‘exploit’, just one you’re letting people get away with.

Gliding Bug

Kraggy.4169

Currently we are tracking a bug on live that allows players who do not have the Gliding Mastery to glide while in Guild Halls. Naturally, that’s not an intended feature of the game, and a fix that will correct it will go live with our next update. Until then we hope that everyone who does not currently have gliding enjoys the experience for the time being.

So, it’s a classic ‘exploit’, you are of course taking action against those using it, like you do whenever people use such ‘exploits’?

Obviously you’re not, so why?

Why the inconsistency? Just when is ‘unintended play’ declared an ‘exploit’ and when not?

Thanks Kiza. So the map they’re pulling everyone to may actually be an empty map at the start…it’s just that he’s ferrying people in!

I’ll keep my eyes on the LFG panel in future :-)

Just be aware that the map you’re trying to get into via the taxi may be full and your transfer won’t work, in that case you can re-try the “Join in” option a few times, sometimes you’ll be lucky to get in .. and if the map is nearly full it’ll give you the best chance of completing stuff like HoT zone metas.

in Players Helping Players

Kraggy.4169

I thought I’d bump this since I have a very similar question about LFG.

I assume something like 2,12,50 refers to Fractals that the group wants to do, but what does “P1 Exp” mean?

‘Exp’ could mean ‘experience points’ (wanting to earn XP) or ‘experienced’ (asking for someone who knows the content) but I can’t figure what P1 is (I’ve seen several ‘P’ numbers).

“P1 Exp” = Path 1 Explorable Mode. Every dungeon has a Story Mode and then multiple “paths” (versions of the dungeon) of Explorable Mode. So, if you see someone posting “P1 Exp”, they’re looking for a group for Path 1 of some dungeon (and likely posting their LFG post in the Open World section instead of the proper section).

Ah, thank you for that, I’ve barely touched the dungeons and never been in an ‘explorable’ variant.

Thanks.

They’ve specifically avoided putting in an auto-queue because it encourages PUGs (pick up groups). By using LFG tool that is in game players at least have to interact with one another in some way. It is how it is to encourage interaction and to get the point across to people that raids are going to require a lot of coordination.

It’s not their fault that you can’t be bothered actually interacting with other people…
GW2 is not every other F2P mmo out there. If you’re not enjoying it then go play something else.

Oh please, stop this ludicrous argument, you can join a group via LFG and never say a word.

No matter how many times you tell people to use CC to get rid of the blue they simply spam 1 like they always did.

I notice now many people seem to be giving up after the first or second regen as if he does it twice then it’s pretty much a guaranteed fail.

I’m mainly running around killing my 500 mobs, I don’t ever expect to get No-Fly Zone or Crystal Clear.

Seems to me this is designed as a guild-only event which is the only time you’ll get enough people who understand what the blue bar is and how to deal with it, any other times as HOT has shown since release anything with a blue bar is simply too complicated for the average GW2 weekend player.

Seeing your target’s target is helpful sure, but is awful for the competitive nature of PvP. You’re effectively being able to see what your enemies are doing on a level that you shouldn’t actually have access to. It’s not really a very good idea, you’re not supposed to be able to see who someone is targeting.

Because the ability the game gives you to target someone behind you and fire a bow at them at 90 degrees to where you’re facing is totally realistic.

The next expansion’s hero challenges will award 30-40 hero points each so the 10-HP challenges of HoT aren’t worth much and you HAVE to do the HPs of the new expansion to unlock the new spec. Then the next expansion will award 60-80 HPs per challenge and so on.

If You don’t upgrade your very old engine Your game beloved by many of us will die with natural death, because there will be better and far more advanced and optimized titles, like Black Desert Online, which look Stunning amazing, and looks better than most sinlge player AAA games today. Funny thing is that even Black Desert Looks Better than most SP game it runs a lot better than GW2, I’ve got constant 50-60 fps on max settings there, even in big fight. When in GW2 I can have drops to 10 fps on large scale events with GTX 970 !
Why is that? Answer is simple because of DX9, Windows XP unsupported system for a couple years now, and I’m asking You ANet why ? Why aren’t you upgrading your game to modern standards?
I bet WoW will get DX12 (becasue it’s support DX11 from couple years now) with next expansion, and How About GW2 ? Please release public beta dx12 client and let your community send you reports how it works.

So you play games not because they’re fun but because they have great graphics.

I see.

Basically, as others have said, DX12 adds nothing of value (you clearly don’t really understand gfx engines and why GW2’s is sub-par) and makes the game only playable by a minority of people who have swallowed M$’s propaganda about Windows 10 .. or more likely had it foisted on them because they were incapable of preventing M$ force-installing it on their Win7/8 systems.

Looked at logically there’s no real difference between a specific character communing with an MP and their communing with an HP so the fact that one Point is soulbound and the other is Account bound is illogical .. of course, I suspect few would argue MPs should be soulbound to bring them in line with their arguments for why HPs should be soulbound.

Oh no, folks won’t argue for something logical when it’s against their interests.

The whole HP/MP thing is simply one huge fudge on Anet’s part, they know thatif MPs were soulbound their end-game would largely be deserted, people wouldn’t stand for having to grind MPs on every character.

Maybe you’re thinking that a single MMO defines the genre, if so I wonder which one, because I play 7 MMOs .. yea, PLAY as is I have active characters in 7, though obviously I spend more time on some that others in rotation .. and every one of them I think of has something the others don’t, so is your definition of an MMO the lowest common denominator of the 15 or so major MMOs in existence today?

I expect Shatterer will be deserted once everyone’s got their achievements, there’s no reward worth the effort when Shatterer often is timed alongside Teq. and Teq. can drop Ascended gear and has 4 event chests, Shatterer’s rewards are pitiful in comparison and the fight’s taking more or less the same time as Teq.

I suspect the time that Anet are taking to fix the breakbar issue with full maps is partly at least to drag out the time when this event will actually be played, once the novelty of dive bombing him wears off all that’s left is a fight with a carpet of trash and a regen-to-nearly-full mechanic that will mean small groups will simply not have the DPS to take him down while at the same trying trying to avoid/kill the endless stream of Veteran and Elite trash.

HOT feels like......

HoT maps feel very unwelcoming, like someone really doesn’t want me to go there. And I am happy to oblige and stay in central Tyria. Lol.

In HoT you can longer run around in gear that is 20 levels below you and not die. You actually have to have a good set of armour on.

Once you run around a map a few times you soon find out the fast paths to certain areas and where you can go to avoid certain mobs.

Of course, since there’s nothing you can usefully DO solo-wise then that ability (taking mob-avoidong routes) is kind of pointless, when you spend 95% of your time looking for maps with enough people on them to actually get anything done or else if you’re lucky on maps with enough people following the tram-line zone meta.

HOT has little to no useful purpose to ‘exploration’, you’ll see most of it during the metas.

Still getting this 15 hours later, always clicking on the TP button of the BLTC dialog, the other two are fine, seriously don’t think it’s anything wrong with ‘my end’ Gem Store is fine, only the TP has problems.

Shatterer Break Bar - A bit too much

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hey, first of all, I love the new Shatterer! Really fun fight and the Branded Backpiece looks cool.
However, I do have one complain, that hopefully is just a bug – The Shatterer’s breakbar is INSANE. I’ve done it like 6 times already and I never saw that bar drop under 70%.

I do understand that some people either don’t care or don’t know what CC is or how/when to use it, but I doubt that’s the majority. At first I thought it was because too many people were gliding, but then I noticed #1 Skill has hard CC.

So how’s the deal? I really want those achievements but right now, that break bar looks untouchable, or at least on the time given to break it. Hopefully is just a bug, like Gerent’s HP scaling used to be.

Already acknowledged …

I am also looking into the scaling of the break bar in general. I believe high population groups (IE most of them right now) have an unfairly harder time breaking him than small population groups. That’s one of the reasons why we need more time to group test this fix before we push it live; we need to test it at a variety of scales.

Hey guys! FYI I’ve identified an issue with the defiance bar that causes the Shatterer to still take off if you “break” him in the last 2.8 seconds of the break phase. I have a fix for that that will need to be group tested before it can go live, so I don’t have an exact ETA for when we will be able to push that live, but we are aware of the issue and will get it fixed in an upcoming build.

I know that there has been tons of posts like this, so sorry if you already go tired of these.

Hi there,

I’ve got a bit mad about the price of the expansion. I already bought this game, so why would I need to pay the full price again? I’m a student so I don’t have 50€ to spend on some expansion. Some peeps from my new school plays GW2 too, and I would love to play with them so I could get to know them, but they got the expansion and I don’t.
It wouldn’t be that big of a deal if I could refund my game and then re-buy with the expansion, but there is a 30 day limit, so yeah.

Is there some kind of discount if I already bought the game before the expansion?
Cheers in advantage.

Since you say you know there have been “tons of posts” about this why did you bother with another one .. and also you clearly know the answer from reading all those “tons of posts” so this is just a troll, right?

Mmmm beat it solo on th 1st try on my 1st character to finish the story. Afterward finished again on the first try on a different toon, helped a friend with it.. may be just practice ? Or may be your connection is lagging? Also if you dont want the penalty box – do the fight solo, like intended. It’s there so you can’t keep rezzing and have to beat the boss in one go, which make sense you are fighting an eD afterall.. Wouldn’t want another Zhaitan

Actually, what it does more likely is simply make many people abandon it, we’re clearly not all as ‘leet’ as you, in this thread and many others.
