Wish I could fight either of you. My current matchup sucks and there really is no one at all to fight. stuck fighting BG and TC. The smallest groups they have are 7+ so its hard to get any fights at all. And ele vs ele fights are always fun, and so rare to happen nowadays.

I think we may have fought? We’ve at least talked on the forums! I’m one of the oldest D/D eles playing the game. (Before phoenix). Regardless, we can always duel in PvP, or hit me up when our servers on WvW match up.

Will you be making some more vids? I’ve love to see you doing some more roaming. I’ll admit though that the one ranger/thief fight you had made me cringe a bit. As someone who plays a Ranger, I tend to find an ele pretty darn easy to CC + nuke.

I’m an OG ele (playing D/D since game start basically) so I have some old videos that still stand. But the answer is yes! I recorded some videos today and I hope to put another out very soon.

Also yes, the ranger was clearly bad but he and the thief should theoretically be able to beat me, right?! Lol. That’s how I look at roaming nowadays. If two people beat me with all those stacks and foods and everything people are buying, that’s fine. I can’t help it. But if I can beat two or more people, that’s just fun!

If you don’t mind, I’ll try to PM you as well at some point and perhaps we can duel. I’d really love to go back to my Ele but I just get so frustrated at times with her and often find myself saying, “if I was playing my ranger or my warrior right now, I would have won that fight.”

Both of my characters run a hybrid build so while everyone knows what the weapons do, they are never expecting the massive sustain I focus on.

That reminds me…. in the old days I run my Ele with a build that give a +movement bonus. I’ve also seen folks using traveler’s runes. What do you suggest for WvW roaming?

I do not suggest traveler runes for WvW. You can get swiftness off so many things it isn’t funny. Try water runes or something that may extend your boon duration, condi shedding or armor. Each will help you, as you can keep your offense up long enough to kill most classes, it’s your sustain as a DD ele you need to worry about.

OH BP is paired with NSP come fight me. I find that if you fight light to medium level people ele is fine. But if you fight a havoc team spec of 2-3 players you will lose. Or high tier players can outs sustain or DPS you. We fight FA and JQ this week and FA is usually 3-7 or 20 -30 So can’t ever have a clean fight. While JQ has 7-12 roaming as a stack and two groups of 25 to 30 zerg pile. When in doubt if you fight NSP come o/ me!

I’m a gold champ LION (Lion Knight ) Tag D/D core ele.

PS I can’t solo 5 man havoc teams or a 3 man burst dps and condi team.

If you could solo a 5 man, I’d need to bow down. I don’t think any ele can these days, although I did that feat back in 2014!

But yeah, we should definitely meet up and duel. I’d love it. PM me in game when you see me on or coordinate a time to meet up. I hear Obby Sanctum is fairly empty still :p.

Bad Ele, Damage on INT is something I mix in every once in a while, but I typically stick to earth, water and arcana.

Kyon, D/D has fallen out of the meta, nobody knows how to time it anymore.

Seranus, this is my favorite class and build, and it takes more work but is worth it in my opinion!

Issues with two Thief changes

Hello all,

I take small issue with two of the thief chances but commend the third.

I don’t believe the 1 second nerf to Upper Hand was merited. That was one trait that rewarded active play. The nerf is noticeable and should be revoked in my opinion as it is a bit much in conjunction with the endurance nerf.

The change to vault is not only buggy but is poor. The new hit box is very odd, and bugs out when you vault over somebody in a line of sight. When that happens it will hit the opponent at a greater distance.

The new “slower” vault also has much greater vulnerability. (I also didn’t like the change to being able to swap weapons to stop the end of the vault.)

I do commend the endurance nerf. It was needed and I think well received.

I have a few suggestions, but they’re only based on my experiences from roaming in WvW. In WvW it seems like I always need a certain amount of toughness, vitality and healing power, as well as ample condition removal in order to survive. I’ve come to this conclusion because it seems like there aren’t any decent options for sustain other than healing yourself.

If I don’t have enough vitality I get insta-gibbed before I can use any healing. If I don’t have enough toughness then I need to have more healing. If I have no healing power then my healing is too weak. And without any condition removal, no amount of healing can save me. Therefore my suggestions are mostly based on the idea of improving sustain without relying on healing, so that more build options are possible.

Skill Suggestions

Ride the Lightning: Remove situational cooldown mechanic and add evade during attack animation
Glyph of Elemental Power: Add an Endure Pain/Signet of Stone type effect for 4 seconds while staying in attunement
Arcane Shield: Change to block all attacks for 2.5 seconds and explode at the end if block occurred
Lightning Flash: Change to area damage and add blind nearby enemies effect
Signet of Restoration(Active): Should also remove 2 conditions
Signet of Water(Passive): Change to grant 2 seconds of resistance every 10 seconds
Signet of Water(Active): Change to chill nearby enemies and remove conditions for each one chilled.
Wash the Pain Away: Add condition specific removal: Bleed first pulse, burning second, and torment third
Eye of the Storm: Add effect to blind nearby enemies
Tornado/Whirlpool: Add increased movement speed (+66%)

Trait Suggestions

Blinding Ashes: Should revert cooldown back to 5 seconds
Inscription: Should grant 5 seconds vigor in addition to the other boons
Diamond Skin: Change to 50% chance to remove a condition when struck (5 second cooldown) (no health threshold)
Speedy Conduit: Add increased swiftness effectiveness (+50% movement speed)
Tempestuous Aria: Increase weakness duration to 6 seconds
Lucid Singularity: Should also add an additional effect to each overload
Lucid Singularity(Fire): Evades attacks within radius
Lucid Singularity(Water): Destroys projectiles that hit bubble
Lucid Singularity(Air): Lightning attacks blind enemies
Lucid Singularity(Earth): Blocks attacks within radius

Some of these suggestions are fantastic.

I particularly like the Diamond Skin change. These are mellow buffs that could really make a difference.

Thanks for submitting buff ideas. I realize how demoralized the Ele community is. Trust me.

My Ele rarely gets played other than just purely for fun. Even then, I get frustrated.

I think it is pretty clear we are getting buffed this patch, however. It would not make sense to nerf or leave Elementalist alone.

So realize this is our opportunity to lay out solid suggestions in one location for the ‘balance’ team.

I’ve been quiet on the forums. I’ve been watching, but quiet, as the state of competitiveness in group and solo play has been so imbalanced and in flux.

As Elementalist is currently — in my humble opinion — the worst competitive class in both PvP and WvW, I think we as an Elementalist community have an obligation to suggest (ahead of the inevitable balance patch) fixes that may be implemented.

The simplest suggestion that came to my head, and the heads of others who have played the class for years? Remove cooldowns on swapping attunements.

Hear me out: If nothing else is changed on the class, this is actually a great idea. It allows Tempest to remain unchanged mostly, as you need to stay in a class for a while to use your special abilities.

To those who don’t play the class, it immediately makes the class viable again by making it unpredictable.

So you see a projectile coming at you after you leave earth? Great, swap back to earth. See an opportunity to gap close? Boom. Fire and burning speed.

Obviously, there should still be a cooldown on the boon/effect on attunement swaps to keep it in line. Otherwise, I think this could be implemented right now to make it a viable class for both staff, d/d, d/f and s/f, s/d.

I was told by a developer on Thursday that developers read every forum thread, so I encourage the Elementalist community to not only engage in spirited positive debate on what changes could be made to make the class viable again, but also make your voice heard on the state of the class.


P.S. I know the above idea isn’t a likely one, but I still personally believe in its application. I respect those who disagree with me — please do the same!

Why don’t you actually just go WvW?

This was suggested for PvP for a reason. WvW isn’t a suitable place for competitive fights.

10v10, 5v5, 2v2, 1v1 should each have their own game modes and rewards in PvP.

As for gear….. There should definitely be an option to allocate stats on your own. Having stats picked for you is just sad.

A lot of the things anet has done have pared down both choices and diversity since the game began.

If you want a true fight between a person and yourself you go to PvP. Unfortunately, you’re stuck with fewer options than you would have in WvW.

Arenanet balances Elementalist thinking that players are only capable of managing 2 attunements. Hence why it’s been OP for a year and a half and just received substantial buffs. There’s no other way to explain it.

Okay, Necro. You’re being way to exaggerative right now. Ele hasn’t been OP for a year and a half. The only thing that’s over the top right now is cele elementalist. That’s due to burning changes.

The moment you listed as berserker thieves as a counter to ele was the moment you lost your credibility as a good ele considering you hard counter them.

Wasn’t this you as an ele dueling Caed on a zerker thief? I think he won every fight. This was all pre-specialization patch, when ele sustain was higher but burns were less potent.

On this topic, I don’t play much any longer, but eles have always been one of the more skilled classes if you take away celestial amulets. I’ve always held that celestial amulets should be removed from the game.

While I agree the sacks are ugly and make the engi less desirable they serve a fairly important purpose that ANet would need to solve to remove them. Due to the number of different kits ,the different playstyles and abilities of each, and the speed with which engis can switch between them, it is important that a large obvious visual queue as to which kit is currently in use is important for pvp balance reasons.

Therefore I would suggest you make your suggestion around some sort of fairly large hand based indicator for each kit. Each one would need to be large and unique enough to be easily seen and recognized from at least 1500 range. My concern is that grenades and bandages are not really that big, so either you will have an obnoxiously large, goofy looking grenade/bandage for those kits or you will need to find some other obviously connectable symbol.

As you’ll see in the OP there are several solutions.

Another of which could be larger symbols. But the backpacks, especially as they are A, behind a person, and B, obstructed by true backpacks, can be so confusing that they serve no purpose.

That’s not to mention that there’s so many other weird backpacks that look like the engineer ones that it’s crazy.

Engineers and engineer prospects feel this is an issue that has been clearly recognized for years, and the fact that it hasn’t been addressed is really sad.

We feel that with this release you should also roll out an option for our neglected looks.

Here are a few solutions below:
*Create a bomb, a grenade, and a medkit “weapon” held in hand
*If back item is equipped and box set to “show backitem”: always show back item (override hobo sack)
*Allow people to go backpack less, or even if it is a back item without skin, so people can go with nothing on their back
*If back item is equipped and box set to NOT “show backitem”: show hobo sack
*On standard player models (competitive PvP): show hobo sack

Please fix this for the engineer class.

The WvW raging and grudge-holding against Narcarsis (who has always played a more difficult team-oriented game) is embarrassing, and I say this as someone who has played nothing but WvW for the overwhelming majority of my time in GW2. This is coming from people who are almost allergic to playing non-crutch setups and who think that the game works as some kind of duel simulator when you aren’t mirroring or at least running meta specs. “Build wars”? The entire game (and especially your made-up version of it) is build wars, funny how you people never seem to have issues when it’s in your favour.

Your understanding of the game is frankly limited in the extreme and you are entertaining yourselves with a fantasy rulebook that’s made entirely of your own doing. It has no sanction or approval from the devs. Just grow up already.

I quit for a few months there. I got a new job after graduating college and I’ve been moving into an apartment, paying bills and setting myself up. For a few weeks I didn’t even have internetz :O.

Whoever kind of heads up this movement, I have a thought out suggestion.

Let’s keep this going, but I also propose someone start a thread in profession balance.

Topic: “Hobosacks don’t influence balance.”

If we make good discussion there, there’s a chance it will be seen.

Basically, the point of the thread will show that they can remove hobosaks without fear of imbalance.

A reason? Let’s see how many reasons I didn’t forget:
1. 25 stacks of might solo, even post strength runes nerf (1 of only 2 classes that can do this)
2. Wins every single 1v1 except S/d thief and condi necro
3. 2nd to only Guardian in terms of team support. Reasons: Tons of cleanses, tons of heals, tons of protection uptime, tons of might
4. Very high mobility on both staff and d/d. Can keep up with a thief and prevent decaps if it has most of its movement cds.
5. Strong in all 2v2’s (seriously put it with any class and it will do well)
6. Stands on point (in fact it will force you off point with staff and sometimes with d/d)
7. Hard as hell to focus down in team fights. Literally attacking the bunker guardian first is preferable.
8. 650 BURN TIX
9. Water glyph elite: knocks down enemies, heals for 8k and is on a 15s cd lolwut?
10. Has AoE and Mist for stomps
11. Downed state vapor form can go through portals (icing on the cake) and remove all conditions (INCLUDING POISON!) and is the only class you most likely cannot stomp on first attempt!
12. Good ccs. d/d has updraft (knocks downed bodies, who needs overcharged banish when you have an AOE BLOWBACK!), earthquake (aoe with blast finisher), immobilize on magnetic grasp, cripple on earth dodges, chills on water 3. shocking aura. mind you this is just d/d Im not even gonna get started on staff.
13. dodge rolls op. cleansing conditions and healing on water dodge, 5s of burn (3k dmg) on fire dodge, blind on air dodge (if you dont do this youre bad at ele), and cripple/bleeds on earth dodge (that bleed ticks 90 for 15s btw)
14. You can actually burst!!! Burning speed + firegrab = 7-9k dmg LOL!
15. Perma vigor. Not many classes have this but hey if any class is gonna have it why not ele?
16. More cleanses than 5x bunker guards put together. Sure most of them are solo, but cleansing water having no icd again is OP AS FK!

10- SUPPLY crate one hit win button!
11- most CC in gameee! masters of stun lock 4-6 CC skills IN EVERY BUILD! Blowback rifle(CLEANSES crip/chill/imob (wut)), pull magnet, ram gadget, blowback AND stun on SHIELD FOR TWO BUTTONS + REFLCT wth?!
12- Turret Heals for 7k every 20s and clears two condis (wut? lol!) (15s cd if you pick up) and Perma regen!
13- Extremely tanky in team fights, don’t even bother, would rather try to go for a necro/guardian first. That’s saying a LOTT
14- You can actually burst! 8-10k blowback+rifle jump/blunderbuss! LOL
15- Perma vigor! Hey, why not engi? a lot dont have this.
16- you can actually not die on point, many engs are god mode, dont try.
17- has STEALTH for stomps and ELIXIR S for stomps! OP
18- AoE poison for 30+ seconds with grenades.. rly.. op.
19- AoE chill for 15+ seconds too^ How is not op?

It is the classes fault, you’re right. But don’t nerf things like drakes breath or boons or water/arcana trait lines for celestial/might stacking. (by boons I mean anything other than might.)

Scoring periods aren’t going to fix anything but night capping. In my opinion, this is taking the easy way out.

When population imbalance (AKA Zerg size) is to blame for this whole thing, you either fix the imbalance, or you debuff zergs for running together in such a small area.

Think of it this way.. Huge armies in real life don’t move quickly, they are bogged down by any number of things.

But in GW2, zergs can catch roamers who don’t use stealth. What normal army can catch a scout?

“Cele is what makes Ele OP”. Lol what a joke. To all the #ELEtism mega fanboys here, Ele is overpowered because of its class mechanics. How is it not OP that a class can have 600 Hp/s regen, at least 60% protection uptime, and burst 4-6k heals every ten seconds, while also having enough damage to kill a heavy golem as fast as an SD Thief (yes, I’ve ran this test). It’s disgustingly overpowered, and it’s not due to cele. I could do all the same things with Valkyrie or knights ele. Just because ele WAS underpowered doesn’t mean it deserves to be OP now. Also Nex, calling people “noobs” doesn’t help your argument.

Also kitten (booms), if I lose will I have to pay 20g?

I’m confused as to how more dodges = faster game. I would say that it is the opposite. The more dodges both players have the more drawn out the fight becomes due to how much damage they are avoiding. The more times you can evade, the less important it becomes to time them for your foe’s most powerful attacks.

Fewer dodges means that fights end more quickly because you can’t avoid as much damage.

Higher APM = Faster paced.

You can have a fast paced fight that lasts an hour. That’s just a long, fast paced fight.

What would you rather see in a duel? Let’s take a D/D elementalist and a Zerk Mace/X Axe/X warrior.

If you give an ele less dodges, he’ll have no chance.. But if you give him more, he has a better shot..

Your reasoning and your logic are flawed “It can’t be skilled because if you have more, you can just waste them on nothing.” How can you base skill on the people who waste their opportunities?

A skilled person will make perfect use of their dodges. And trust me, in large fights there’s always something large coming at you that deserves a dodge.

And what if that warrior also uses sigil of energy? Wouldn’t he have less dodges as well? Thus giving the elementalist a better chance? And if the warrior doesn’t use sigil of energy, it doesn’t have a lot of dodging capability to rely on anyway. It works both ways.

An elementalist who has more dodges doesn’t mean the level of skilled play increases. Learning how to use what you have does, however, the more you have, the more likely you are to waste it and this concept is applicable to almost anything spend real life, i.e the more money you have the more likely you are to waste that money on things that don’t necessarily benefit you (waste).

The only thing that increases is the chance for that elementalist to win. I think you mix the two up. More dodges doesn’t equal more skilled play. And as you know just because you win doesn’t necessarily mean you are skilled by any means or just because you are disadvantaged or you lose doesn’t mean you aren’t skilled. You could have 1000 dodges and that doesn’t increase the level of skilled play one bit. Increasing might stacks doesn’t increased skilled play, increasing damage doesn’t increase skilled play, etc.

I also don’t base my argument on people wasting opportunities. Truth is, even the most skilled of players “waste” opportunities. It is impossible to make “perfect” use of dodges. Having more dodges encourages more wastage, no matter if you are the best or the worst player in the game. A skilled player may “waste” it less but they are still prone to it regardless.

My logic isn’t “it can’t be skilled because it can be wasted on nothing”. Please point out within my post where I said that. I said that having more access to dodging makes it more likely to waste the opportunities when given in abundance.

I just said that more dodging does not equate to more skill, I didn’t say that having more dodging can’t be skilled, a big difference. Even if I used that logic, yours would be on the extreme opposite side of that “more dodging = more skilled play”.

I also pointed out as well that it also makes keeping track of dodging much more worthwhile.

That was too much of a response. I didn’t quite understand it all.

Let me make this simple. More dodges increases the speed of the game. I want the game to be faster paced.

If you don’t, just say so. Let’s not argue what is skilled or unskilled. It just makes people angry and all comes down to opinion.

Because you’d actually have to plan ahead instead of hopping around like a tripping bunny? :P
But ignoring that for a moment, the OP’s point is that sigils are overshadowing the character. Not that you dodge too much. Big difference. Remove the endurance gain, add it to everyone as a trait option, GM in a PVP-centric tree. Or add a signet to everyone which does that but on the healing slot so there’s some weight behind the choice.

But put the power into the character.

I think we all have different opinions on where the game should be.

When you put all the power into the character, you’re making an imbalanced situation. When you let every character access the same powerful things, you’re correcting balance by choice.

To address the bunny thing. Some people waste their dodges. That’s their problem.

I don’t. They’re super useful, and I hope my enemies have them as well.

More dodges means a higher level of speed in a fight. Some people are afraid of an increased speed. I don’t want a slower paced game.

And a small side note, I don’t run celestial unless some nitwit challenges me and is using celestial amulet, because it is extremely overpowered. Only counter to celestial war, engie or ele is celestial war, engie or ele.

I don’t understand why you keep defending D/D ele. It doesn’t “deserve” to be god mode because its 2% harder to play than warrior. It’s incredibly broken. IMO the most broken class the game has ever had, worse than hambow at its peak, because IT CANNOT BE COUNTERED. Celestial elementalist is god mode at 1v1, very good in team fights of you have a half decent team that can peel, Has instant 2-4k heals every 10s along with at least 500 HP/S, perma burning that does minimum 500 DPS… It’s disgusting. You keep saying its a difficult class but it really isn’t… nothing in this game is hard to play after like 1 week of playing… I played ele for like a week after patch and reached basically the same level as many with 1000+ hours because I have knowledge of the game. Look at it from an unbiased POV, ele needs significant nerfs. Also I really agree with Heidia, the game needs less faceroll healbot bunkers running around and more high risk high reward. The problem here isn’t cele, cele engi isn’t so bad… the mechanics of elementalist are a problem. A class shouldn’t have more recovery than a bunker guard while having permafury perma 25 might, etc. Theres definitely a problem.

Also Necro is OP as kitten, no idea why they buffed it in patch. Typical ANet.

Try playing zerk ele. Or valk ele. They don’t pack the same punch as celestial, and as an untested ele, that’s like taking the training wheels off.

You need to realize I’m not defending celestial d/d ele. I’m defending the ele class. Because it doesn’t need nerfs. Not when the problem is celestial. Otherwise, you’re just playing whack-a-mole with balance.

So last night, I decided to try something different with wvw roaming. My roaming group generally consists of mesmers and thieves. So obviously they love their stealths. I end up being the focus of the enemy. Which is no big deal since I can tank for a good deal. But I decided to try swapping out d/d for d/f last night using standard build still. And my survivability and condi applications and cc’s shot through the roof. I was really able to provide support for my roaming group of 4-5 and we had a lot of good fights and winning vs 12-15+’s. We were, surprisingly, able to control the fight despite being outnumbered. Maybe you should consider trying it. I would take FGS as elite though considering the mobility sucks on d/f if you need to escape. I remember chatting with you about the elites we use, and we both use avatar of melandru. But we can afford to replace that since earth focus 5 is an invul on a 40 sec cd.

That’s what I’ve found, for sure. However, I don’t relish playing with mesmers and thieves. They make the roaming game very sad. I like roaming in a 5 man comp of 1 war, 1 engineer, 1 thief and 1-2 eles or 1 ele and 1 guardian.

That composition makes a really great setup and doesn’t rely on stealthing unless you need to revive someone. Everyone fights to the death or runs in the face of a zerg.
