Condi needs a serious nerf in WvW. It’s ridiculous that some classes can apply more conditions than you can cleanse, basically killing you in less than 5 seconds. There’s so few ways to counter play that and all of them involve a battle of attrition, which isn’t fun.

It’s not so much the individual conditions themselves, but the combination of several conditions together. Confusion by itself is fine. Torment by itself is fine etc. But Bleed, Confusion, Poison, Vulnerability, Weakness etc etc. all applied at the same time is stupid. Especially with the randomness of cleansing and the ease of re-applying the conditions (seriously needs to be an icd on conditions like confusion and torment, say… 30 seconds, in line with most cleanse skills)

Yeah yeah, this has been talked to death and several threads have been made about it, but even so, we need to keep complaining about this until it gets fixed.

Analysis on Desert Borderlands' unpopularity

While most of us agree that the Desert Borderlands (DBL) are visually stunning, almost all of us can agree that they are extremely boring to play in. The following are just a few of my thoughts on why that is and what could be done to change it

1. Why were the Alpine borderlands seen as fun?

This would come down to several factors, but the main reason is that the terrain allowed for you to re-enter fights extremely quickly due to not having any environmental obstacles. Moreover, the fights were centred around 4 main areas and 4 more minor areas being – between Bay and Garrison, between Hills and Garrison, South of Bay, South East Tower being the more major points of conflict, with the more minor ones being the 4 side camps. This is just from my experience in WvW since early 2013

If we look at the locations of most of the conflicts, you could see that they all occurred in mostly flat terrain with very few environmental hazards or choke points. We can probably safely assume that this is what would lead to more fights in either open field or contentions for objectives. I’d disagree though, that having flat open terrain is the main reason why the fights were in those locations. I would assert that instead, it is the location of the major objectives in the map that funnelled players towards these objectives, allowing for an easier time for players to find other players to fight or interact with.

The locations of the camps easily lead to either a tower or a keep. Holding a keep on an enemy borderland allowed you to more easily attack their garrison, which made it worth something. Especially if you were able to upgrade it to having a waypoint, which allowed you to control more than your 1/3 of the map. This made it important for zergs to pressure the side keeps, for roamers/havoc parties to snipe/contest camps and for the server as a whole to maintain defense on their borderland. This play style became the norm for many WvW players, even spawning the term “home borderland defenders”.

The only downside to this was the snowball effect when you have a server that can significantly outnumber the others in their matchup, which is more of a problem with the scoring system than with the design of the map (especially since it’s actually worse now). Another downside to the Alpine borderlands was in its overall design. While not a necessarily a bad thing in particular, over 2/3 of the map hardly ever saw action or rarely used at all. In particular, north of the north towers and south of the south towers saw little to no interaction outside of the 2 camps. That’s a huge chunk of the map that was never used. In fact, you’d find that the Alpine borderlands are actually larger than the Desert borderlands – just that the Desert borderlands is much better with objective placement.

2. Why are people avoiding the Desert Borderlands?

Well, there are many reasons, but the main reason I think is the fact that it actively funnels people away from each other. The pathing and environmental obstacles don’t allow for 2 enemies (either roamers or zergs) to easily encounter each other due to all the twists and turns on the map. You could be right next to each other, hidden by a single wall, and you wouldn’t know it. This makes the map seem extremely empty and desolate, which then forces players onto a map that doesn’t have this issue – Eternal Battlegrounds.

Of course, the shrine effects, keep effects and the oasis event all adds onto this as well, as they are rather bad at funnelling players into a “hot zone” like what the alpine borderlands did, and instead spreads players out around the map away from each other. The oasis event in particular forces groups to spread out, meaning that if your group is the one trying to complete it, you’re extra vulnerable to being ambushed by a group that has no interest in completing the event, but simply wanting to kill you.

This all leads to a vicious cycle whereby there are less and less players on the borderlands because they can’t find enemies to fight, then people coming on find less friends to fight enemies with, resulting in even fewer players on the map.

My opinion is that the terrain needs to be changed in a big way. Remove a lot of the cliffs, gorges, ravines and valleys and allow an easier path from your waypoint to where the action should be (around the major entrances of the keeps) and instead replace the Oasis with those kinds of terrain for roamers to play hide and seek in with the Oasis objectives – making it a roaming/havoc only objective. Tone down a lot of the environmental hazards and obstructions to where it would slow down a large zerg to give enough time for defenders to call for backup, but not to the point where groups are de-motivated to try at all. Both the side keeps need their effects removed as well, since all it does is make it harder to take for the outnumbered side – were it to be defended.

Defense sorely needed a boost, but it got too much of a boost. WvW stays interesting when you have delicate balance between the attacking and defending forces – not when defenders can split your zerg before you even got to your objective. The new borderlands went overkill with the aims in splitting up zergs and buffing defense on keeps and towers, which kills action even faster than before when attacking was too easy.

The best way to learn WvW is to play WvW.

EoTM isn’t World vs World. It’s Colour vs Colour. There’s no benefit to defending in EoTM as you get way more rewards in capping structures than defending – the difference is astronomical. The difference is far smaller in WvW and the importance of defending for points far more pronounced.

Dire gear… burst them to death? when they have 3k toughness and over 25k hp? If you can burst them down, you’d be complete glass and die from condi before you can even get your skills off

With alliances, what about players with no guilds but actively participate in their server’s WvW efforts? New to WvW and have no direction on which alliance to pick?

Alliances may sound nice in theory, but I think it’ll only put up barriers to people getting into WvW, as it may forcefully separate friends due to alliance population limits. As an example, if this were to be implemented today, the majority of Blackgate would choose to move as one. Would an alliance fit that many people? or would the population cap be a lot lower and force people who’ve played together for 2 years give or take (majority of Blackgate’s guilds) to split up?

It’s a good change if you like karma training and avoiding fights. That’s all. Everyone should hate it, and rightfully so. It brings less fights, reduces map awareness, forces players into scouting (an awful boring role). And more or less casts a fog of war on the map. If ANet thinks that’s more fun, well, it’ll take some time to adjust. White swords have been so important for so long is pretty tough trying to defend without them

What needs to be fixed is the amount of conditions applied vs the amount of cleanse a person can have needs to be balanced. It’s draining any semblance of build variety in WvW when conditions are so strong that every class that wants to roam must take every kind of cleanse available to them so they don’t die to conditions instantly.

Basically, cleansing needs to be made stronger

@OP: You’re playing in the wrong game mode if you’re complaining about coverage in a 24/7 battleground. Either that, or you’re playing with the wrong motivations.

Read all of it. Most of it was drivel. You just want to punish people not playing the same time you are. Players not playing during EU or NA prime are put under a lot of pressure to perform well and cap structures already, not to mention having to deal with guild member attrition because it’s really boring to play against so few people.

Guilds transfer up to have people to play with/against. Not to win. Just ask the guilds that are transferring to SoR to play against BG and JQ.

Actually, the 1v1 faction system was implemented in other games before and found incredibly unbalanced (Warhammer anyone). A 3 faction system was far more balanced as it theoretically allowed a 2v1 on the stronger server, or even if there’s no 2v1, it allows the weaker 2 servers to gain ground back while the stronger server switches between targets to try maximise their points. Again, theoretically speaking.

Unfortunately, GW2 players are a bunch of casual carebears that would rather karma train than fight it out, so that’s why WvW is so, SO terribly unbalanced. As soon as a server is struggling, people bail. Each NA server has enough people to queue all 4 maps during NA prime, but only the top 6 servers can manage it, and only then, during reset. The WvW map limitations are tiny compared to the population this game has, so why can’t the maps be filled?

Celestial elementalist is OP not because of its damage (though burn is a bit OP across the board right now – not an issue with elementalist in itself), but through it’s godlike sustain and healing. If burning gets nerfed as it should, cele d/d ele would then lose access to most of its damage right now. Its base damage isn’t actually that high. You need to sacrifice a lot to land a fire grab for the burst.

The amount of healing it has though, is a bit ridiculous. You can burst an ele down to 5-10% hp, then they can switch to water and heal back up to 100% in 2 seconds. I’m having flashbacks about the discussion on warrior healing signet…

There’s nothing wrong with zerging. The zerg meta will form naturally in any large scale pvp mode. Regardless of mechanics. The idea that a zerg will be rewarded less than a few roamers goes against ANet’s philosophy for this game. It’s a bad idea that encourages selfish behaviour and reduces server cooperation.

Like I said earlier, we flip structures not for wxp or karma, but for PPT. Play to win, not for rewards.

There goes my guild’s entire weekend.

Being an OCX and SEA based WvW guild, we have scheduled our raid nights for when we have the most participation – weekends (we’re an adult guild, we can’t raid nearly as much on the weekdays because work). Since you guys don’t give us our own regional servers (along with 0 marketing here whatsoever – I haven’t seen a single HoT poster in any games/electronic retailer here), we’re stuck playing on your NA servers, living with ridiculously high latency and having to deal with the skill lag that comes with it.

If you want us to bugger off, then make it clearer why don’t you? My guild has already made plans to move off if HoT didn’t turn out to be what we expected. This is only accelerating that move.

TC is getting the win this week so JQ can get the win next week, if no backstabbing takes place. The win trade goes on without BG in the picture. It’s basically made this entire tournament a farce.

I think you should read what you wrote a few times…

I’m assuming this is a joke thread?

Condition cleansing skills often have twice or three times the cooldown period to condition application skills (autoattack skills notwithstanding). Think about that.

You will not be able to avoid every single skill and, if your opponent gets the first hit on you (such as when you’re fighting a sentry and they come out of stealth to hit you), there’s no way to fight back when you’re trying to cleanse all the conditions and keep your health up since you’re losing 3000-5000 health per tick. For most classes, that’s death within 4 seconds.

I don’t think that the saturday reset is bad move and I don’t care about it. There will be more players (aka weekend warriors) around. Many players could go outside to enjoy a friday nightlife with their friends now. Of course, I feel sad for our ocx-players, I know a bunch of them who are dedicated defenders of the borderlands.

If you fear that the karma-friday become a karma-saturday, then it’s up to you real world versus world players to deny such request.
Defend structures, crash your zerg into the opposite karmatrain, hunt them until they log off or fight back. Work together to fight such behavior, save the normal wvw gameplay of your Tier. Don’t be worry or sad if you lost players because of that, they aren’t worth to lose a single tear, comrades. The whole idea of karmatrains in wvw belongs into the trash can of the history. I never understand why commanders have started this at all? You have now the unique chance to change it.

This is… the ignorance is… please stop…

Karma trains were started on Friday nights before reset as a way for the WvW community to come together and chill out a little. It became hijacked by PvEers looking for easy loot. Guilds then came together to farm karma trainers because they ruined what the WvW community had, pushing out those PvE karma trainers (mostly failing due to ANet’s own ineptitude at keeping WvW a hardcore game mode).

Current karma trains don’t happen because of any organisation to karma train. The current karma trains happen because no one cares to chase people down whose sole motivation is to farm some loot from NPCs. We form up 10-15 people to chase down 30-40 karma trainers, and then what? They disappear onto other maps to continue the hunt for some crappy loot. That’s not how we want to spend our Saturday evenings (OCX – Saturday mornings NA).

So you know what will happen? People will try and fight a while on Saturday evenings, but after a while, people will stop trying. There’s nothing to fight for for the PPT guilds since the scores are already decided, so there’s no targets for the fight guilds. With no fight guilds stopping karma trains, the karma trains start back up.

This is overall such a bad idea. If ANet wants to move WvW reset night away from patch night, just move it to a Wednesday or Thursday night NA. Us OCX and SEA players don’t get very much from this game due to the worst support I’ve ever seen (unless you’re NA or EU). At least let us have our weekend of play.

Having played in Darkhaven and ET before, I can tell you those servers are not organised at all. They have pugmanders that aren’t in TS karma training and avoiding fights unless they outnumber their opponent because there’s no coordination. There’s little to no use of their public TS even though there may be 50 people on the map (which happened when I was in ET, huge number of people on the maps, total 6 people in the entire TS, no tag up). It’s that lack of organisation that hurts the lower tiers. The lack of team work and team spirit and making an effort to communicate with your teammates.

In T1, there’s very little of ‘wiping pug zergs with guild groups’. Why? It’s not cause the guilds are bad. It’s simply due to the fact that when you have an entire 40-60 man zerg in TS with the pugmander, it doesn’t matter that it’s not a guild group because it’s still going to move like one. In DH, there was a ‘zerg busting’ guild that I followed around for a bit just to observe. That guild could’ve been taken out by havoc squads in T1 and T2 but were killing groups 3 times their size. There’s a simple difference in organisation between the lower tiers and the higher tiers that you simply can’t cross in a short amount of time and is the difference between Gold and Silver league servers.

And that’s absolutely fine, their score can reflect that there is no organization. Right now though, it doesn’t. It reflects more about who brings more players to the table and has better 24/7 coverage. With the current system in place we wouldn’t even be able to tell how competitive we are to a kitten server since we’ll never get a chance to fight them, let alone on a level playing field. Fact is, unless we get numbers to totally obliterate ever server in tier, we don’t have the ability to move much in the ranks at all. When we fight BP, we are on fairly even numbers/coverage game. Its a good match-up overall. We know this as even on reset, we don’t get queued, like almost never.

My point is that even if you give those servers the same population and coverage as BG for example, they will still get roflstomped and call BG stacked. Fact is, most of BG’s guilds have been playing together (or against each other) for close to 2 years now and the teamwork and communication that has risen out of that experience of playing together for that length of time have given us a real edge in organisation, something which pure population can’t overcome without a similar level of organisation

Glicko issues are a whole different thing altogether and I think the old 1 up 1 down system worked better, even with constant roflstomp matchups (we get fairly balanced matchups with the current system but it’s too slow in responding to server population fluctuations).

Relax the full status on worlds

There’s 10 full NA worlds and 11 full EU worlds with only 3 and 2 on Medium respectively.

I think it’s time to either expand the number of tiers, or relax the population requirements to reach full on worlds a bit, especially with expac coming up

Servers like Blackgate and Jade Quarry will probably still remain full, but it’s pretty clear that a lot of servers can’t match those two in particular, even when they’re both on full status.

Die in 3 seconds? Really?

I drop meteor storms on zergs, and while they hurt, they probably do 10k damage to me max, which I can burst heal just by switching to water attunement. Most of that damage is nullified by being next to guardians when they’re dodge rolling. I’m also using zerker trinkets and have more health than you, so you’re probably not all geared up or using the right trait build for zerging (You NEED 30 in the water trait when zerging as an ele)

Retaliation is a great mechanic to fight against greater numbers. Don’t nerf it.

It’s freaking (for lack of a stronger word due to censor) rude to GvG on a queued map. Just unacceptable.

2 hour queues on EBG? Are you sure you’re on Blackgate? Even during NA prime I rarely get queues outside of reset night. During my play time (Oceanic-SEA), there’s no queues on any map unless all float teams congregate on one map (which only happens if there’s fights). Also, dat outmanned buff on EBG during those hours are OP. Phat loots.

There’s a reason you’re given 5 guild slots. There’s no reason not to find an active WvW guild on your server to participate in WvW if that’s what you’re interested in.

Is there something wrong with blobbing up? Especially with regards to pugs on EBG? I don’t see anything wrong with it myself, and I’ve been on both ends of the spectrum, from being run over completely and running over others completely.

I mean, guilds can go play with each other in OS or organise a spot to meet up and fight, but I’ve never liked organised fights with more than 5 people personally. The game simply isn’t balanced around that. WvW for me is about the spontaneous fights that appear in front of you, regardless of numbers.
