Because Free To Play can’t post here. The players they care about aren’t the ones who’ve paid already it’s the ones who haven’t.

And the hard core MMO grinding/Raid/game addicted players. That is where the games focus is, and so is the “meaningful” communication.

^I think you missed the point….by a wide mile.

It’s something they do voluntarily. It’s not part of their job description. I know I wouldn’t feel motivated to do more, if I got a lot of complaints about what I did do.

Just saying, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

A point of fact is that the community thinks it is communicating with Anet. They are not. They are exchanging bits of info to insular employees who try to contribute to corporate/official interaction, and this is where the problems lie. There should be a communications team in every conference room that relates, in a coordinated fashion, all the info that the Senior management wants to release, in a balanced and business like fashion. Many an Indian with no Chief at the helm causes the problems that snowball in the community, and go seemingly unnoticed in the conference room.
There have been some very good interactions and some supremely atrocious interactions with the community.
The employees that do voluntarily get on the forums or Reddit, should not be doing so on their own time without the oversight of a professional versed in corporate communications.

I think you may get your wish, as Anet seems to have abandoned the Manifesto that came out before the games release in favor of typical MMO fare. They have used lore in extremely vague ways, and commenced to implementing 8 bit like game parameters to satiate the fly by night game style off young players, those that frequent free to play games and move on. I liken the new content aims right at this demographic.
The “old time” player that has been around since GW1 can tell you how the game has done a 180 since launch. The release of HoT with (IMHO) juvenile mini games as achievements was just, well, juvenile, and I have not been back there for more than a few minutes since. My purchase of HOT, only to be told i have to farm hero points, to farm masteries, to talk to an NPC that is an inaccessible tree unless you can jump there on a mushroom? Well I find that type of game is more like a Japanese 1980’s knockoff rather than a mature, lore laden, plot driven game like GW2 used to be.
I really feel, and this is my humble opinion, that monies available from the aforementioned demographics combined with the skill set of designers and programmers will continue the current path. I fear the even the bug laden original world will be forgotten(if not already) in favor of this modern toy version of the GW franchise.

As a mature gamer, I appreciate intellectual puzzles instead of the Nintendoesque kiddie games they seems bent on pursuing. The lack of connect between the content and the lore widens every update. It appears the game is moving towards attracting and capturing the loose wallets of the more immature gamer than the more mature clientelle from previous versions of the game and previous iteration. It is unfortunate for me to see the world devolve into fractioned pieces that do not interact or meld in any way to previous lore.
For instance, Legendary Weapons, has anyone heard of them before or during GW1 or GW2? Hmmm. Food for thought and just my humble opinion.

Posting on any venue is something the Devs do voluntarily. Except for a select few whose job it is to post, I would assume.

It might encourage those volunteers to post more often, if there was less complaining about where they do post. Just sayin’…

I don’t use Reddit, no idea how it works. But, seems that most important Dev interactions eventually make their way here. Same with Twitter and Facebook.

ArenaNet doesn’t force their employees to share on social media; it may seem a bit much to those that do volunteer to have to post their thoughts/feedback/answers on multiple platforms.

What ground my gears was seeing post after post after post on this forum from people who were having problems with the Legendary collections which required events to fail and not getting a red post on this forum, and then finding a month old post on reddit discussing this problem and saying failing events wasn’t intentional.

Granted, they have a right to post where they want, when they want, but with important information they should make an effort to also put it on their official forum. Not have people begging for help and attention on their official forum for a major problem blocking progress, and weeks go by and nothing is said here.

This is a continuance of less than stellar work by the communications team. It was atrocious before the team was installed, and it has gotten worse after. It will continue to do so until they hire communication experts to communicate for them, give them the proper etiquette, and make sure they stick to the ground rules.

I would like them to explain to me why they put Nintendo like games in HoT as achievements. Is the game getting released for 10 year olds from now on or what. Maybe they were enamored over the idiots who couldnt get enough of the Nintendo like puzzle box, and decided to have them play the game insead by giving them what they want, mindless mind numbing content that requires no thought, skill or lore to make it work. I just realized this is what they did up there. I just wish they would hire a developer that was in tune with the original teams vision, as it has COMPLETELY disappeared, leaving a void of focused game design in that huge room of developers.

so i have done Tequatl since you could solo him, I have done that, daily , including today, with a few fails. I have had 8 hordes, and 6 other ascended boxes, including one last week i think.
Do you get a gold reward every 25%? Try maintaining dps through out the entire fight with no fears , try using the ranged double damage spot. participate fully with as much dps and kills in the defense phases. the better you do in all these parameters increase the chance of the coveted horde or an ascended box. "1"ing your way to the end of the encounter ensures you never get the reward you seek. But then again, the win is the reward, you only get the extra bits if ya put your mind to the fight.
This is just IMHO. I have found the days i concentrate on every facet of the encounter, i get the better rewards, like the 14 ascended drops that Tequatl has dropped for me.

Don’t worry so much about picking a profession for DPS. With the right build and skill, the practical DPS (achievable consistently in play) of most professions is relatively close. Where disparities exist there is usually utility, de/buff or other factors to look at. When you consider professions it’s much more helpful to strive for diversity in your group

Think of a Nintendo game where you repeat an action with a few variances until you gain a level, then start the whole process all over again. Mindless actions for a mindless reward.
The world of GW2 has forgotten the lore that apparently made these particular weapons Legendary. They have inserted mindless actions and then given them a mindless reward, although they are really nice skins.
Looking at the history available online about Guild Wars, and a plethora of Lore, there seems to be no mention of these “Legendary Weapons” at all. It is apparent that the only thing that makes them legendary is the amount of time or gold you have to sink into them. No particular good deeds, no lengthy quests, no struggle to overcome, no hardship to endure, no sacrifices, no nothing.
Just keep going, you will be rewarded legendarily.

I have a kudzu, and I like it, bit it is just another skin to me, it really has no meaning out of game, or in game. I think that is sad.

The game was not meant to be a buy everything game. Although they allow it. For you it should be an earn it game. If you cant live on 6 gold per day there is a disconnect somewhere. You cant have everything immediately on 6 gold per day. I play daily at 6-10 gold per day, and I have plenty, it continues to accumulate for me.

I don’t understand all these “how do I make gold” posts, seriously…

Just play the game and do what you find fun and gold will come without even thinking about it. It’s not like gold is required for a huge amount of things besides vanity items and a small amount of convenience items if you do trade gold to gems.

Exotics can get you through all the content. And even if you MUST have that ascended, well like I said play the game and it will come. I made myself a full set of ascended and I did not buy 1 mat, it all came from just gathering etc as I went along.

This is the type of player the game is made for. I am one of them as well. Just play and enjoy the game. I LOVE to hear all the whining when people cant get everything in one day. Earn your stuff instead of buying or farming it. You get crap drops because you farm, you know that, right??.

No perks for duo guild?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sligh.2789

There seems to be a bent towards super organized Guilds and competitive playstyles. This is counter to the GW1 playstyle that provided the games initial player base. Small 1 , 2 , 3, and up to 10 manned Guilds were extremely common in GW1, and all that were in them were very pleased that they were able to achieve the accoutrements of even the largest guilds. In GW2, even with the clamor for equality for the smallest guilds wanting the ability to do the same thing in GW2, the game has taken to catering to super organized guilds of medium and larger size, leaving the small personal and family/friends sized groups in the dust. The fact is that most people play in small (or very small )guilds most of the time.
I had a 5 man guild in GW1 and had a full Guild Hall. I was able to outfit it by myself. I am not the best player, but I am pretty good, and I could probably do the same thing here, but I would need too many people to get there. I enjoy a large guild for the camaraderie, and these changes ( amongst many others) have depressed the feeling of family and friends being able to achieve lofty goals. It really seems like this basic fact is lost on the Anet developers, even though there was MUCH clamor about exactly what occurred not happening.
Casual games should not, IMHO, be built on the need of large guild presences to achieve, casual players that play with a few friends should have been able to achieve the same goals of the large guilds, albeit at a slower pace. Just the battle to claim a hall was the lynchpin to reserving what a casual player wanted being segregated to the people that play in a different manner. More of the same again, with Anet missing the wants of the casual player that built their franchise.
This is just my humble opinion.

do dungeons, sell rares, buy the extra silk you don’t get from salvaging greens/blues and loot bags. if you do 9 fast dungeon paths (couple hours game time) you will always break even. squeeze in a teq for another gold or two, depending on drops, and hit silverwastes.

farming gold needed is always better than farming mats directly.

This is exactly the reason the prices are so high.
If players took the challenge to find, harvest and salvage for their own materials, and then bought a few to top them off, the demand would be low, and the prices would follow. I have all 3 weight sets and spent less than 20G to top off sometimes. I never farmed anything, and I do not do dungeons to farm gold. I play the content to have fun, and the materials are there. I do dungeons to have fun, and the materials are there.
Patience is a virtue. Just take your time and the armor will be there.

I immediately decided that my desire to help the company produce a better product was tainted by the RNG bug. It would have been nice to help, but some chances are not worth the cost.

It would be nice to have this type of thing work properly, rather than have to open up your inventory. At least if they said “hey, we know, not important” it would be nice.

Mordrem Invasion Update: 11 September 12:30 PM

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sligh.2789

Sligh.2789

I think we need to start looking at this first from the foundation with a few questions. I am in no means an expert, but this is what I am thinking.

Foundation Questions

Who is the event intended for?

  • Newcomers vs Veterans
    • Do you want this to be for level 80’s?
      • Can we drop the market on a certain crafting material?
      • Can we bring back some unique skins that haven’t appeared in a while?
    • Do you want this to appeal to everyone?
    • Can FTP accounts participate?
      • Will they be able to afford the reward pricing and the travel costs?
      • Can they level from it in preparation of a new expansion or another event?

What does the event require the user to do?

  • Will they have to travel through the whole map? (Do they need to use waypoints?)
    • If huge travel time – consider adding gold to compensate WP cost
    • If low travel time (small area) – gold not as important as WP cost is no longer thought of
  • Can these events be completed via solo, small group, or big zerg? Explain one versus the other
    • Can a solo person or small group do the same as a big zerg?
    • Does it require you to be in a big zerg?
    • How much should the event scale if a big zerg appears?
  • Will they clearly understand where to go and what to do?

What will be the ROI for the user compared to what already exists in the game?

  • What are the Rewards?
    • Can they earn XP to level their characters?
    • Can they earn gold / karma to buy new items or skins from current in game vendors / the TP?
  • How will users get the rewards?
    • Completion by map as a whole
    • Individual Event Completion
    • Mix of Both Individual and Map-Wide
  • Does this provide an incentive compared to other current events in game
    • Halloween Maze farms are quick and enjoyable
    • Silverwastes drops a lot of material / items for users to break down or sell

What is the time frame?

  • How long does the event last? (A week, few days, a month, permanent)
  • Reasonable based on the event? (drop rate)
  • Reasonable based on reward structure? (vendor pricing)

Problems: Promotion and FTP

I am not insulting FTP. It was a good move. The problem was that I believe this event was invented and developed before FTP accounts were considered based on the reward structure.

Another issue could of been the promotion of the event. First intended for Guild Recruitment and then appealing to the FTP / new players. This type of an event is not something to start a new account on.

I think a Festival like the Queen’s Gauntlet would of been a better move.

The event itself has:

  • No XP / Money / Karma Gain
  • Quick events that you hope you can tag in a mindless zerg but would take too long individually
  • A reward buff that pushes the “tag event” mentality to new players to get more blooms
  • Small reward output based on time sync needed for everything in a limited timframe

If I was a new character, I would go back to the normal story or events. If you are a new non-FTP account, you get all of these Tomes and level up scrolls for a daily login. Does the XP gain in a limited event really hurt the game? Does the small amount of gold per event to help with the WP costs hurt the game?

Yes, you could walk, but you then are not getting to all of the events fast enough.

Season 1: Scarlet Invasion Comparison

From a design standpoint, I would say a good majority of people liked the Scarlet Invasions. There was a few different types of events going on in the map that scaled to how many people went there. At the start, yes, there was a champ train problem, but that was fixed. You had to spread out in the map to divide and conquer to win which results in the best rewards. This was reflected in the Battle for Lion’s Arch and the Scarlet / Assault Knight battle.

  • There were elements in place that required coordination (some of it tougher than others)
  • There were elements in place that contained unique experiences compared to the rest of the game
  • There were rewards in place that allowed players to feel like it was worth the effort to participate in this event (also achievements, but that is a minor detail)
  • There were elements in place that compensated you in traveling across the map to complete the event

Improvements to Mordrem Invasion

Quick Wins

  • Add XP / Karma / Mat Drops (No Champ Train)
  • Lower Vendor Pricing on Both Gold and Blooms

Crazy Concept

Idea 1:
This would take A LOT more time to implement, but when I see Mordrem Invasion, I think Silverwastes. I can see somehow taking one of the Forts or Outposts in Diessa / Brisban / Kessex and holding that from waves of enemies. Brisban I can imagine a camp down in The Gallowfields with Mordrem attacking from both directions or a Husk throwing rocks from up above.

Idea 2:
Again, A LOT more time to implement. Using Kessex as an example. There is a giant train of enemies coming from Lychcroft Mere that marches through the map to Delanian Foothills where you have a main base of operations. Think of it as the Mordrem are escorting a Dolyak and that Dolyak has a bomb.

In between those 2 points are small checkpoints you can create to slow down / kill the horde of enemies. This can be an endless supply of respawns or a large amount of enemies at a time that would eventually go down to 0. It’s an event against overwhelming odds type of scenario where you hold off until the time is up or you clear them all out.

They ignore players or some of them do to rush to the next objective. To prevent scaling, they destroy the checkpoints faster / hit harder when there are way too many players. Think of it like an “Outmanned buff” in WvW but the Mordrem get the buff.

Interaction with the World

One thing that would also take a long development cycle would be the interaction of characters in these maps already with new events that appear later.

For instance, in the Tower of Nightmares, I would of liked to see the Centaurs attacking the Toxic Alliance in some way using their siege weaponry. Another idea: there would be several events where we aided the Centaurs or they came to rescue us in a “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” scenario. To go along with that – the Quaggan could of attacked the Toxic Krait in a new events underwater by the Tower. Maybe even some of the Bandits by the shore could have an event where they request assistance.

Basically, taking the characters that are in these maps already and making them feel a bit more alive like they are dealing with the same problems the character is dealing with. The events that normally transpire can either still happen or they halt entirely because this threat is lingering.

Take that idea and apply it to the Mordrem Invasion. (Easier said than done – I know).

It always appears that they do not design the game in this manner. It would appear they said, "let’s have some modrem invade, and throw in a way to get old stuff, OK all set, go…….. Oh woops can we have some suggestions please?.
Game design is in how the game plays, and the rewards that come from playing, and it appears to me that Anet has no clue what that means.

Run here, try to tag before the thing goes away, run here tag that one, run there, ad infinitum. for a few currency tokens that get me nothing I want. No loot whatsoever. No luck, no Karma, no gold.
So what is the point of it all? As a long time casual player, I see no point in participating. I can do mapping and get better loot. It appears to be senseless grind for a limited amount of baubles. At least give us the large table of drops that open world gets. I hope regret for buying the expansion does not set in. That seed has been planted

I just suffered through the last map, the events pop on top of other events, making the targeting problem worse than normal, and I have done 3 maps total for 85 blooms, and some empyreal fragments and some blade shards, a feather and a mysterious pink key. I did get 6 soft wood in the last event, so it was not a total bust.

The mobs melt too fast, it is hard to get to tag anything, the rewards are non existent, and there is no enjoyment for me in this at all.

Fighting the Mordrem invasion would probably be enjoyable, but I am fighting just to get a hit in against my fellow adventurers.

blue / green I salvage for mats. Gold level 80’s are reserved for MF in matched sets of 4. Level 79 and lower rares are TP’d if the price is greater than an ecto price +16.47% ( average 1.16 ecto per rare and accounting for exchange fees)
Exotic are salvaged if a costly rune is involved, TP’d unless I am in need of dark matter.
Named exotics are reserved and TP’d in sets of 4 as they seem to give pre return at a higher rate. I have 2 pre drops and 4 from MF in game since launch. That is usually 10-15 MF rolls a week.

They never saw this coming. They decided to include the base game to entice new members on the outside site. They did not even think that they may need to include a char slot for those that already have the base game, as they were they advertising it in game to those that, well, already in the game. Just that would have evened the keel, and eliminated the whole debacle. The 74.99 price point shows that the marketing team never even considered the effect of giving new members a bonus while not providing a balanced bonus to players already in game, especially when the bonus to new members is that which the current players have already bought.
Serious breach of common sense and an unbalanced marketing strategy IMHO.

“In the case of other upgrades that are moving to the new system relatively unchanged, such as the guild banners and the guild vault, we’ll be grandfathering access to those upgrades for any guild that unlocked them in the current system.”

It is on the “rethinking Guilds” post.

You need to read before you jump off the cliff.

Long map load times after patch

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Sligh.2789

Hi folks, here’s some info on the issue.

There was some work done to how we build character textures (aka “composites”) in an effort to reduce memory fragmentation and out of memory crashes. There were two parts to the change:

1) Reduce the number of asynchronous composite builds in flight from four to one to reduce the total amount of texture memory used by the composite system. This should be reverted back to four soon enough.
2) Make the composite system allocate a small pool of texture to reuse during the composite build process. If there is no more room in the pool, the composite system waits a frame to give active composite jobs an opportunity to finish and release their textures back to the pool.

When a single character composite is built, as many as 122 separate ~1MB temporary textures are allocated, worked on, then discarded. These textures are too big to fit in the Windows Low Fragmentation Heap, so they cause massive memory fragmentation. Fragmentation occurs when a large chunk of memory is allocated from the OS then other smaller allocations occur “around” that larger allocation. When the chunk of memory is released back to the OS, this leaves holes in the address space so the OS can have a hard time finding large enough contiguous blocks of memory for larger allocations in the future.

In addition to fragmentation, character composites would allocate several hundred MB’s of memory during map load, starving other tasks of precious memory. When the OS either runs out of available address space or doesn’t have enough contiguous space for a large allocation, GW2 crashes. The texture pooling helps with both issues by both reducing fragmentation (by reusing textures) and limiting the number of textures that can be allocated at once.

We’re working on finding a good balance between the size of the texture pools and affected load times. Keep an eye out for future release notes related to the issue.

Hopefully this info is interesting to people

Sorry for the inconvenience!

This is the most informative post by an Arenanet employee I have ever seen. Informative, Explanatory, Concise, and, well, informative. Well Done Sir.

I get the distinct impression they were infatuated with Nintendo. I never played it, but it seems by all accounts to be directly modeled after that type of game.

Lack of official merchandise- Ideas?

There are companies that can churn this merchandise out at breakneck speed with zero to minimal cost to Anet. There is nothing but profit to be made. Hopefully their current legal team up to par with liscencing approvals.
How Anet has not even thought about it yet is beyond words. This is how you grow customers, retain customers and create lifestyle branding that insures lasting marketshare.

“Stuff, stuff, stuffy stuff”. I always laugh when I hear it.

Also the Char Vigil Crusader on the wall at Deadman’s Reach in Sparkfly. He is the only musical Charr I have seen. They should have given him the name Frank Ironsinatra. Whenever I am in the map, I have to go listen to him.

Which ascended trinkets to buy?

Trinkets provide more boost, so go berserker trinkets. Armor should be mixed to your comfort/skill level in Soldier’s armor etc., adding more of a desired prefix until you reach that playability limit.
Amulet first (from WvW vendor), then accessories (Guild Vendor), then the rings, WvW vendor or Fractals.

Unscrupulous guilds...?

IMHO, if a Guild recruits, that is not a good sign. Guilds that are good in my book do not need to recruit. Guilds that d not recruit usually have more level headed players and superiors.
I once joined a guild that sent me spam that I owed them dues, having never mentioned that when they recruited me. The in game mails lasted for about three months. Obviously they had WAY too much time on their hands.

Beta time set up for NA players...

This is very upsetting to all those in North America because of the HUGE Hype of the portals dropping and everyone spending so much time in Silverwastes and dry top and then to be told “Sorry you have a job .. you won’t be able to enjoy the beta testing after all!”. This is just UNACCEPTABLE! #HOT #GW2

For my timezone you see the time conversion to took the time to do below:

11:30 a.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7) is 7:30 a.m. EDT
3:30 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7) is 11:30 a.m. EDT
7:30 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7) is 3:30 p.m. EDT

Will Anet consider times set up for NA as well? What alternative is there for us GW2 players in NS servers where we did get our portals and email invitations to partake in this beta test?

The time conversions are wrong, we are 3 hours ahead of Pacific, the Times for Eastern are
2:30
6:30
10:30

I, as someone with halfs-heimers, still cant believe that most people on these forums let their emotions cloud basic thought processes. It is funny to see, yet at the same time I draw the correlation to my own teenage spawn that exhibit the same lack of introspection into their own interactions with others in the real world. It seems the self centered Ipod lifestyle that causes people to walk into fountain pools as they are entranced in the digital world has now caused further erosion of their own interactions in the digital world.
sorry for the off topic.
I will be able to get the last two sessions after work, so I see no problem. Anet sets the rules, if the times were not to be for me, so it should have been.

snip , so the players who are 40+ years old might not even make it till the last expansion if it continues so slow. snip

I take that personally. I am 50 plus, and I will be gaming when my grandkids have their own.

I got that chest after my account was upgraded. I hope the new account has a new RNG string so my loot drops increase, as the conspiracy theorists say that new accounts have really good loot drops. It better not get worse…..
They really should upgrade all the account that are using discontinued SKU’s. Good business practice. These types of customer service errors are what creates the ire of a customer base with the corporate entities that seem to not think their actions through. I hope they learn from the past mistakes of other companies and treat all their customers equally.
