A Statement Regarding Vertical Progression.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Let me address that point after point

1) The forums are representative of the whole playerbase — they aren’t.

Isn’t this exactly the same argument used on SWTOR forums by people claiming that – contrary to general forum attitude – everything was okay with the game?
Yes, the forums indeed are not the whole playerbase, but they still are a representative subset. If you want to claim otherwise, and use that as a basis for something, then you’d better not only prove that there is a bias in the forums, but show in which direction this bias goes (and why).

2) Design should stay the same, without exception – because WoW was totally flawless at the start? Because devs never ever miss anything, or make assumptions about how fast people will chew through content or anything — clearly, devs should never make a mistake.

There is a very big difference between bugfixing, introducing new designs, enhancing and streamlining the game and a massive change to the core game philosophy (that formed the basis for advertising) that was made 3 months after launch.

3) VP vs. HP has to be an all or nothing philosophy. Black and white statements don’t really benefit anyone. Saying all VP is bad and only HP is good is silly.

Unfortunately, in this case, it IS a binary matter. Either the character advancement is VP based, or not. It doesn’t mean that VP is necessarily bad (each has its own fans) – just that those two approaches are different, and this game was advertised as HP based.
Just for your information – GW1 did NOT have VP advancement at all. There was no better, stronger eq, higher levels etc in new campaigns/expansions. All advancement was sideways, opening new options to your character – but once you got to level 20 and top eq in the first campaign, you character never got any stronger later on.

The Devs said that one of the downfalls of Guild Wars 1 was that the game got stagnant.

Yes… that’s technically true. They forgot to mention, however, that it got stagnant only after devs announced that all development for GW1 gets cancelled and GW2 is in the work. Even then it continued quite well until GW2 betas (and later launch).
It wasn’t game design that killed GW1, but it’s abandonment by developers.

The fact that they added a tier of gear has such a minimal impact

No, the 3 items already in game have minimal stat impact. The impact of the gear’s existence in the game is much higher than warranted by stats, and the impact of the whole set (which we can already estimate with quite good precision) will be anything but minimal (see maths on other threads – it’s over 20% damage difference for berserker gear based on stat difference alone, without adjusting for higher weapon base damage)

I think the key here is that a small amount of vertical progression isn’t terrible. There are still a multitude of ways to get the best gear. Think about WoW, the ONLY way to get the best gear was to raid. You didn’t have any other options. In GW2, all you have are options.

Yes, i can choose fractals… or fractals.

GRANTED, the other ways of getting it aren’t implemented, but Anet has said repeatedly, there will be other ways to get the gear.

They said that two months ago. We already know it won’t be in January update. Seeing that, i’m less optimistic than you that they’ll keep this promise anytime soon.

Skritt Hit wintersday daily?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

I want to gather some info on this. You may have noticed this thread started a year ago, and we made changes after last year’s Wintersday that substantially improved the way the “Skritt Hit” activity worked. !

Actually, no, last year was the year where it was made significantly harder, by removing npc skritts throwing snowballs in LA (probably as a sideeffect of moving wintersday to Divinity’s Reach).
Currently, the main intended way to do it (using the dolyak escort event) is the one least likely to work. With people kicking skritts away, you either miss them (because they got kicked away while you were throwing) or you hit other players that managed to get between you and the skritt you aimed at. Or you get hit by other players attempting the daily. Also, if there are any other players doing the event, the skritts just disappear way too fast.

I’m usually very lucky if i manage 2-3 hits per escort. And then, of course, if it’s not the early days of the event, you need to wait for an hour or more before the next escort starts (as noone is donating).

You can of course still cheese it with snowball packages, but that is tied to other problems (most snowballs from packages get wasted before you can pick them up, not all skritt seems to count, and you drop snowballs if you get in combat for any reason).

So, to sum it up, currently it’s in state of “too annoying to attempt”. Too bad it’s not the only one of the wintersday dailies that can be described that way.

I kind of remember that it was brought up then as well (this thread was not the only one), so i don’t actually hold much hope that it will ever get fixed. That you have addressed the problem only now, and seem unaware of the details (while they were mentioned in several other threads this Wintersday already) seems to confirm that even more.

There ya go. The key things to pay attention to are the lines about Evon being a loyal Ash Legion operative and never questioning orders. That means that what the Gnash warband was doing in LA was fully sanctioned by the Ash Legion. Since the Ash Legion specialises in espionage and information gathering, the most obvious conclusion is that they are here to spy on the people and leaders of Lion’s Arch.

Heck, for all I know, Evon is secretly funnelling part of his profits back to the Ash Legion!

That would definitely make him one of the good guys!

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Actually of the things you listed, time-gating is an anti-grind mechanism. People who wanted ascended stuff at launch had to build up their mats a bit every day which means you can’t grind it directly. That’s not grind it’s anti grind.

Of course you could grind for it. I saw people with ascended weapons on the second day after they were introduced. It’s the casuals that are slowed by timegates the most.

Since a casual player wouldn’t want an ascended weapon the day it was released, it puts them on a more even footing with people who can spent more time.

Nah, it puts them even more behind.

I’d advise you to take a deep breath, thinki, and make a list of jp’s, then think of a way in which this would make them significantly easier. Then post that list here. I’m certain you will find that list to be way shorter than you might think. In fact, offhand i can think of only one such jp (Behem gauntlet)… well, maybe two (pig iron mine might also be easier, though i think that the height difference between beginning and end is too small for gliding to work there).

Magic Find [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

I understand the confusion. The facts do agree with each other when you consider that ArenaNet is the god of GW and has decreed that what was once is no longer. They decided to change the game by removing Magic Find from gear. They decided that some sets were to be removed completely and replaced with other sets and that Celestial gear would only have the Magic Find removed. They also decided that by doing so, the sets would be balanced based on the new line they created.

Yes, exactly. Thus the confusion. Because they changed the balance, and insist that it remained unchanged. If celestial sets were balanced then, and are balanced now, it is only because the word “balance” got redefined to a different meaning. Especially since the celestial sets were actually inferior to the rest even before MF removal.
Which is completely beside the point, by the way. The point is, that lot of people made/bought celestial gear only because it contained MF stat. many did that even before Anet reached decision about MF removal.
In other words, they did exactly the same thing as people that bought/crafted double stat + MF sets. And yet they are treated differently.

Don't make the mursaat the "good guy"

Astralporing.1957

Humans have a BIG thing against the mursaat, remember the Saul incident?

Krytans, specifically. Ask a citizen of Ebonhawke however, and you will likely find they’d rather trust a Mursaat than a Charr.
And Sylvari, Norns and Asurans are unlikely to have any strong prejudices at all. It’s not like Mursaat ever done anything to them, after all.

Still, to answer the OP: Where exactly did you seem him behaving like a good guy? Because i sure didn’t. What i see is him pulling a second Saul D’Alessio case, because it (specifically: killing elder dragons) is in his interests. Granted, he doesn’t need to keep the Doors of Komalie shut this time, so he may not need any more blood sacrifices, but it doesn’t mean he won’t cross us over at the first opportunity as soon as it will suit his neeeds.

TL/DR: i don’t see a good guy here. I just see a very pragmatic (and charismatic) villain that doesn’t resort to violence as his first conversation option.

As much as I hate Ascended gear and want it gone, It’s too late now. Arenanet can’t just take ascended gear from players who worked a lot for it, that’s wrong.

Unfortunately, that is true. What could possibly be done however, and what i still hope they could be persuaded to do, is to make ascended gear easily accessible, following original spirit that game was supposed to have. And to stop with any further VP ideas Anet might have.

How is ascended gear not easily accessible? Seriously. That is a terrible argument I see all the time on the forums. The gear is INCREDIBLY accessible. If you play for only an hour a day, you should have at least 2 ascended weapons, and full trinkets by now.

Yeah. A year after introduction.

There is no such thing as PvE+PvP combined (even if devs use such description in their advertisement of WvW content). If it has PvP it is PvP. Period. The only difference is the scale it is on – sPvP is personal/skirmish level, while WvW is on tactical stage.

Will Asc. crafting be time-gated per account?

in Super Adventure Box: Back to School

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Time-gating, in general, is supposed to bridge the gap between casual players and hardcore players by letting hardcore players not get too far ahead of the casuals… but I don’t think it’s working the way it ought to.

Because it slows down casuals as well, even more than hardcores. Casuals not only usually play less (and less consistently, so not every day), but also are more prone to use that time for things that they consider fun, not things that are preparations for fun.
If it really was about not letting hardcore players get too far ahead of casuals, making the ascended gear acquisition easier and faster would be a way better idea (yes, that would let hardcores stockpile ascended gear, but since it’s not tradable, and there’s only so many eq pieces that you might need, it would not be a problem).
Of course, it was never about helping casuals in the first place – timegates are nothing more than a stopgap measure to slow gear acquisition and “character (lol) progress” to a crawl, so that Anet can delay decision about introducing even newer tier for a bit longer.

Moving to remove dungeons?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Hmm. Focus on Gear gated instances and raids. How…“innovative”.

The Brave New MMO didn’t live long.

Let’s not act as if poorly-made dungeons are more “innovative” than raids and fractals.

Lets not act like fractals are any better. Raids, we will have to see about.

At least they aren’t gear gated. By a gear tier that shouldn’t even be there.

That’s no excuse for being so lax on fractals for so long. At minimum they should really be pushing out either a fractal or a raid wing every other LS release or so. That’s a cadence of once a month. Given the smaller nature of fractals I think this is totally doable.

Sorry, the new changes to the system suggest that’s never going to happen. Remember, they will now be tying specific fractals and instabilities to specific fractal levels. Adding even one new fractal would require redoing the whole set for consistency.

If they have shifted to a design that makes adding new fractals more problematic, then the only reason i can see behind it is that they aren’t planning on adding any new ones. At least not until next huge rework of the whole system.

Beyond that, this doesn’t account for any of the ~90 non legendary skins that require MC as a component, nor for the HoT legendary weapons, nor for legendary armor.

None of those skins are “required” — they are all optional shinies.

We’ve been through that already… Nothing is “required” in this game, including playing it. It’s not an argument. Especially, since the “not-required” things are not a sideshow for the game, but one of the major endgame parts (basically, in GW2, you almost never play for anything that is “required”)

(The mystic weapons are only required by the Treasure Hunter Collection, a pipe dream for the majority of players even as some of its items have decreased in price, some have increased.)

I’m fairly certain it will get nerfed since it isn’t working as intended. People know the fight, so this time it isn’t a case for learning the fight anymore. They will tweak it until they hit the sweet spot again.

As for wurm, not sure I understand why that got buffed. 3 attempts the day before ended in failure. People wont take the effort to learn a fight if it doesn’t feel achievable to start with.

Yea it will prolly be tweeked a bit. As far as the “can’t kill” it part goes, that is how it was when Tarq was first introduce, then it just became a daily chore to kill it. I think just like the new traits, people need a bit of time to get used to the change.

You missed the parts where his hps got adjusted down and the laser started dealing damage. It’s not just that the people got better, but also that the content got easier. And if it didn’t get adjusted then, there still would be like 3-4 guilds killing teq, and noone else would bother with it at all.

So yeah, if you want to make Teq a dead zone it was after Teq Rising, leave it as it is now. If you want people to actually play that content however, you should want Anet fo fix that mess.

Oh, acquisition of Ascended gear indeed needs a lot of improvement, i completely agree.

And as for drawing the line? I don’t think that having everything be accessible through all avenues is possible (or even necessary), but 2-3 distinct ways to get anything (or even 4 – PvE casual, PvE hardcore, WvW, sPvP) seems reasonable.

At this moment the very least thing Anet could do (because i don’t believe they’d actually make any bigger changes mid-holiday) would be to add all the components (and a 1000-drinks barrel) as a selectable option to the holiday sPvP track. Humans in Tyria - Feedback and question

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Originally, in gw1, the strength of the humans was in their numbers, and in their relation with the gods (for example, Charr, physically stronger and more militiant, were defeated, because they couldn’t match god-given magic wielded by human invaders).

From that time, the numbers have dwindled, the magical advantage has been retconned away, and importance of the human gods has been diminished (partially by them going into seclusion, partially by the way of retcons).

That’s of course in Tyria. As far as we know, current Cantha is a military juggernaut that would crush any other opposition it would come into a direct conflict with (something that is being prevented by their isolationism). Of course Cantha is the map region we’re least likely to ever see in this game.

So yeah, in general, when devs adapted GW2 into a game with more than one playable race, they kept leveling field and emphasising advantages of other 4 races so much, that humans ended up well behind. In some instances it was really overdone – Sylvari importance in the game for example is way, way bigger compared to what it should be.

And by now, i seriously don’t know what could be done to fix that (barring the possible return of the 6 gods).

At least mechanically they are all equal.

Why should they finance the content for others, then, if they are being told to stay in the core? And if they didn’t finance it, then the expac would have flopped – with possible heavy negative repercussions for the future of the game.

In this game (in most games, actually, but in GW2 especially) casuals outnumber the hardcores by a significant margin. The game could survive hardcores leaving, but will not survive displeasure of casuals.

Think of it next time you will tell someone to leave or stay out of expac.

Braham Eirsson - a wrong name

in Living World

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

I know that the norn are not exactly the same as historical cultures they are based on but it seems to me like the Norn wouldn’t have a lot of written official texts like laws and name documents so they would be likely to have naming customs rather than rules leaving Braham free to pick the name from the parent he actually liked. (I know I’m pretty much guessing at Norn culture here and may very well be wrong.)

Most likely he just wasn’t famous enough himself to make others use a different name. He could claim all he want to be Braham Borjeson, and other Norn would still call him Eirson. Because, for them, that would be his main defining characteristics – being a son of a Legend.

Once Braham picks up a little glory on his own (he’s already on a way to it), he will be able to change his name and make it stick. It still won’t likely be Borjeson though.

Korea, China, and Japan all have major issues with each other. While stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, we were always told not to talk about China or S.Korea with Japanese Civilians. Basically, they all dislike ( putting it lightly ) each other because of past war crimes, namely in WWII.

And this doesn’t happen in Europe, since we’re all a big loving family with no past incidents on the scale of WWII… oh wait.

It’s called a follow up. I did need that question answered because I don’t understand why people don’t know this.

Oh, that is easy. They don’t know, because noone that knows answered them. For some people doing the same thing you do (guessing and assuming) is not enough.

And i agree with ZudetGambeous – assume that it’s going away. It may remain, but better safe than sorry.

So I stopped getting trait points as a level.

Trait point condensing was propably a good idea. Moving the trait tiers up definitely wasn’t.

Why we can`t use DPS meter?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Astralporing.1957

“Note. I choose to assume what he said is true simply because discussion here relies on it. I also havn’t encountered players that stupid before but then I havnt met every single individual in the game and I can’t judge the likelyhood of this scenario except on my own circumstances which would be only a partially accurate response from a single viewpoint”

Story is quite believable. There are definitely pugs that can wipe on level 1 fractal Mai. There are definitely players that are dumb enough to kick someone without checking first who is instance owner (when things like that still mattered), and there are definitely people impatient and impolite enough to resort to kicking as soon as something doesn’t go their way.
Thing is, this has nothing to do with the armor set they are wearing. There’s an equal number of stories of two players joining a pug group, and then kicking everyone else (including instance owner) because those other people were not skipping. Even if the dungeon went relatively good up to that point.
The truth is, some people are dumb, some are kittens, and some are both. This has nothing to do with their gear choices. And the only thing it has to do with this thread is that i wouldn’t want to put a dps meter in the hands of those people. Because they sure as hell will use it to kick someone.

Feedback/Questions: The Megaserver System: World Bosses and Events

After reading all the concerns, I feel the new mega server system was neither wanted by the players, or needed by the players.

Now, now, let’s not go that far. The system was both wanted and needed. It’s basic idea is sound. It’s just that the implementation is completely broken and instead of helping, will make things worse.

There was a time GW2 was Casual Friendly

That’s not “fractal rewards”. That’s “high level fractal rewards”. Remember, we were talking about casuals that moved out of dungeons here – and they are unlikely to even have AR for those levels.

Downscale ascended to exotic for WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Doing so would invalidate the time people spend acquiring that gear.

Perhaps decreasing the required time needed to acquire every next slot fo that gear would also lessen the problem. Instead each new batch of ascended items gets harder and harder to acquire, which makes it worse and worse.

In short, “time spent acquiring ascended gear”is in itself a problem that needs to be eliminated, not accerbated even further. Explaining that to eliminate one problem you’d need to get rid of another problem you introduced is an argument for the change, not against it.

Also, ascended gear being available through multitude of ways is something that has been constantly promised since it’s first release. Haven’t noticed much effort put into it so far.

More tiers? "I really hope not." -C. Johanson

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Astralporing.1957

It’s the same person that once claimed that he wants everyone to get their best stat gear by the time they get to level 80. Now he says they never intended that.
If a year from now they decide to add a new tier, he’ll likely be saying that “it was planned all along”.

What happened was players chewed through content way too fast. Faster than they wanted.

less than 1% of players did that. In fact i believe there are more people that played from the beginning and still don’t have full exotic set than there were people posessing legendaries in November.

Besides, it doesn’t matter. The fact remains, that they went back on something they said once barely 3 months into the game (earlier, actually – it had to take them at least a month to prepare November patch) – and they did it easily, at the first opportunity.
Which basically means, that we cannot expect them to keep any solid promises they might have made to us now (even if they had made them, which they didn’t)

Why would you sneak into a group that you don’t meet the requirements of ?(even if you think those requirements are absurd).

I have no idea. It’s just that very requirement is meant specifically against people that would do so (for everyone else simple “Exp only” should be enough). It really has no meaning otherwise.

Won't be getting Legendary armor!

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

I am wondering at which point the time and effort invested into something stopped being the measurement for the quality or quantity of rewards given and instead is simply seen as unfounded entitlement on the same levels as the idea to get the best rewards without any trade off like a time investment or effort…

It happens the moment you leave your work to have fun in a game.

There might be multiple ways to gain legendary armor for all we know.

Dev answers in last AMA suggest otherwise.
