It doesn’t have the trinity in the sense that one player doesn’t stand still holding all the aggro, one player does not stand still blasting all the heals, and the remaining three players aren’t reduced to role-less DPS-machines.
Granted the push towards the zerker meta goes against this, and exemplifies the fact that people will go for the easiest possible options. What is mind-boggling is that they will then blame the developers for their choice to stick eight characters on one gearset, play every dungeon identically, and then wonder where the fun went.
In the current game, it is 100% viable to make a team of offensive, defensive, and support hybrid roles. This game does an -amazing- job with well-built hybrids, and they are necessary towards completing dungeons without skipping, stacking, or abusing other broken mechanics. The common problem is players try to go all or nothing; all DPS, all Support, or all Heals/Survivability. Of those three, only One is viable consistently in every dungeon in the game; All-DPS. Naturally players would gravitate towards it. It’s easy to gear for, has predictably repeatable role in every dungeon (think back to other MMOs, specifically the disproportionate amount of DPS players to tanks/healers. The concept isn’t much different), and is the epitome of speed clears which a large portion of the playerbase prefers over full dungeon clears.
The problem with this, as exemplified many times by many people on the forums, is that it was not -easy-. It’s not easy to retrain yourself to play a mace/shield Guardian in active, non-stacking combat, leaping in front of your allies to shield them from large attacks, or constantly switching weapons to keep up Protection stacks on allies while still using your higher-than-average Toughness to keep the majority of the mobs on you and off your allies.
This game does have aggro mechanics; Wiki them, and learn to use them correctly. Healing is viable, but not as one sole healer keeping bars up for the whole team; multiclass, learn to deal suitable DPS while still watching out for your team. With a few players doing this, healing turns out to be surprisingly powerful. In getting rid of trinities, the game did not mean that we could throw all ideas of teamwork and strategy out the window and focus one one archetypical build over three. It meant we need to learn to use a multitude of skills and abilities, be able to actively engage in multiple ‘roles’ at once while participating in active combat.
It boils down to no one player should be standing around doing just one thing to win the game. Sadly, this happened with the Zerker meta. ANet is not trying to eliminate DPS roles, they are toning them down so there is more value in keeping the party alive longer. Whether or not this will work as intended is yet to be seen. There will still be speed clears, there will still be a majority of players who do dungeons to get money as fast as possible and have absolutely zero desire to learn any other aspect of their classes or team play. With the current reward system, that is unavoidable.
But there are players who embrace the current hybrid-class system. We get in groups, coordinate our classes, builds, and gear, and run dungeon after dungeon without stacking, skipping, or exploiting anything. It’s a ton of fun, and we pretty much never die. Are we ever going to race a group of speed-clearing Zerkers stacking in a corner? NOPE! But we’re certainly not going to resign to one repetitive playstyle and blame ANet for an unwillingness to learn anything different.
Road to Tier One starts here.

You all have been complaining for ages about a new way to obtain a legendary that actually requires skill rather than mindless farming and now you got it and you are complaining because you aren’t good enough at the game. Give me a break
I think this pretty much sums it up right here.
Hi, i just wanted to drop in and say that all the kitten PvE/WvW players can simply make a team and go get a free legendary handed to you. Should be easy right?
For this legendary you actually have to know how to play this game to it’s fullest and not just grind dungeons. This legendary has more prestige to it than all the other’s because it takes actual skill to get one. Not just time and luck. All the haters are free to join and see how easy it is to win that tourny.
although I’m not playing sPvP (cuz I’m terribly bad at it), I find this totally legit. Mastering sPvP is 100% more skillfull than anything else in that game. Ofc grinding for a legendary takes time – but there’s no skill involved at it at all. So those who doesn’t have enough skill still achieve a legendary by sacrifying their time in grinding, those who have skill sacrify their time in training and less farming. Thus making it 100% viable to gain such a high price. Remember: it’s not just ‘kitten lets enter that tournament at try’, it’s 100% only winable by teams that put as much effort in that game as those farmers.
Therefore: good job anet, good decision on that and good luck to everyone in that tournament :-)
Just wow….. saw this on the front page now I am intrigued the spvp community finally gets something but /shrug do they even care/want a legendary?
This is mountain times better than anything we’ve ever gotten outside of the PAX tourney.
99.99% of us are so excited for the .01% of us that get anything.
I think it is awful that they are offering this. Invalidates those of us that hated doing things like World Exploration, and would rather do WvW but we had to do other game modes. But because Anet favors PvP thinking it will save this game they get a legendary for winning a tournament. I like PvP and do it myself, but giving away something that people grind for for 6 months to people that just mastered one game mode is wrong. Precursor, or one gift I guess is ok, still over the top, but giving away the whole thing is such a slap in the face to the rest of us. A title would have sufficed. Still makes them stand out, but doesn’t invalidate others’ accomplishments.
Thanks Anet…
I can’t tell if you’re serious or not…
Lots of people will likely enter this tournament, and to get in the first few slots you have to be a VERY skilled player.
They are actually giving the best rewards in the game to some (ONLY 5) of the most skilled players in the game for once, and you’d rather everyone has to grind for it…?
What does this community even want?
For me personally these rewards are unacceptable.
Way too rewarding for doing just over the course of a few days some few minute battles and gettign rewarded with something, that takes other players that are mostly no pvp’ers like an eternity to get….
The guys that have a chance to win this are players that practiced their classs and the gamemode for 1000s of hours. These are arguably some of the most hardcore players in the game. Ask a rank 70 pvper how many matches he played and his answer well be around 15000 … at 10-15 minutes each. These guys played this game for 4000-5000 hours since release and they have nothing to show for besides a pretty phoenix finisher.
And its 5 of the best of those guys so its not even a certainty unlike in PvE. Where every random person can grind for it and will get it eventually. Hell ive seen PvEers with an entire collection of legendaries. And you complain about 5 individuals that win a single legendary via a global pvp tournament after practicing since release pretty much.
Im literally disgusted that people complain about that.
I didn’t play GW1 for more than about 10 hours and the nostalgia festival means very, very little to me (and given how many more GW2 players there are than GW1, I have to guess a lot of people are not pining for ‘the old days’).
I’d be interested in Cantha because I enjoy just about any fantasy setting that manages to not be poorly re-enacted feudal Europe, but No. I don’t think its the only way that development can or should go.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

I guess we can proactive and make a forum topic stating how the changes are going to ruin the game. You don’t need facts for those. /sarcasm

You can purchase any of the trait guides. Prices depend on tier and whether it’s new or not. So for every trait there will be an option to go out into the world and unlock it via specific content or just purchase it if you choose to go that route.
I work on systems, combat, skills, and balance.
I’m pretty sure you will get refunded if you bought them outright
I’m pretty sure you won’t if you get them from BL chests.
Either way, send a ticket.
This is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! ! !
I’ve wanted something like this for a long time and now that it’s finally coming, you managed to make it This kitten Good!Such a refreshment! There are a ton of things like these that should be looked over, and it really feels like we (literally) have to wait ~2 years to see them change.
Might actually be my favorite patch of all time!Thank you! This is the side of ANet that should never be turned away from us!
I’m glad you are excited, and we are too. This is just the first taste of stuff coming in the build. There will be many more blogs. =)
I work on systems, combat, skills, and balance.
Not being able to change traits whenever I want, without additional loading screens was literally the biggest issue in running dungeons for me. I am so grateful.

The only thing dangerous to GW2 right now is ESO but that place is going to be a ghost town in less than a month.
fixed
In my opinion ESO is not dangerous to GW2 in any way as ESO is B2P+P2P+$shop. And I’ve played it a lot during beta but it’s nothing special. Just another generic mmo with a Tamriel sticker on it.

World of Warcraft will have nothing to do for almost a year before their expansion releases.
For now the guns lay silent, no more will we hear them roar. For reasons yet unknown, we are tallying up the score. Names on shreds of paper, families torn apart. They know not when it ended, just when it got its start. Out of a clear Tyrian sky, a deadly beam found each, building, wall and spire, heard as far away as Divinitys Reach. I won’t forget the faces, the blood curdling screams, as the city that survived the centuries, was tearing apart at the seams. They came from the air, the land and beneath the sea, to ravage and destroy those like you and me. The air befouled, as the buildings burned, medieval were the pyres, even in the mornings calm, you still can smell the fires.
Now its time to gather those that cannot rise any more, and lay them beneath their beloved soil, they won’t suffer anymore. We’ll miss them each in many different ways, with the coming of each new dawn and ending of each new day.
Answers will be slow in coming, all any of us will know for sure, is the once clear waters of Lions Arch are tainted forever more.

When I logged in yesterday and wandered through LA a bit, I was hit hard by how much the aftermath felt like my personal experience with Ground Zero, and the actual losses that happened to me there. I eventually had to leave the game for awhile, as it still hits a bit too close personally.
Regardless, a big /salute to ArenaNet for nailing this part.
I like to view MMOs through the lazy eye of a Systems Admin, and the critical eye of a
Project Manager. You’ve been warned. ;-)

I do not know how good I am wording this kind of thing but I must try. My life has not been a easy one and one of the things I could fill my time with has been video games, and until Guild Wars 2 I have not liked video games nor have they made much sense to me. Others I have tried always made me nervous or uncomfortable during and after, I don’t get any of that with Guild Wars 2. For giving me something of such form and function I can enjoy and relax doing even when so much else in my life is neither of those I thank you, from someone who cares and understands what you do takes capability and love I thank you.
P.S. To those that run and make Guild Wars 2 and those that feel like I do feel free to look me up anytime, I am always down from something pve or spvp or wvw or conversation
again thank you.
it’s a balance thing, please don’t engage in mental gymnastics to try to justify this through lore.
hah no, that would lead to much more exploiting and hacking and eventually into cheating.
The only reason a game allows for modding would be if it was a largely single player or small scale coop/multiplayer game, things like skyrim, terraria, minecraft and suchlike.
Giving modding and dev tools for an MMO to users is like shooting yourself in the foot.
yup… already decided………..
