I use staff mainly for dodge / vault spam, then I also take SB for mobility.
If you’re duo queuing with a lower ranked player, stop. You win less points than solo queuing and lose more points. I was duo queuing with a rank silver player today – lost 18 rating, won 6. Terrible. Queue with people your rating.
Alts is a whole other issue.
Returning to the topic;
The situation as it stands encourages players not to play. I think that the match quality is decreasing because fewer are playing. If you queue up, you risk your MMR.
Another reason match quality may be decreasing is the presence of so many alts.
Complete opposite for me. As someone who has been playing PvP very often, I have steadily been climbing up the ranks just by playing more.
OH… 208? Ok, sorry. But still… case in point.
I don’t like the meta build either, but I use warhorn instead of focus – still support though. It just feels fluid and it feels like you’re actually a huge part of the team… which is why I’ll never drop D/W.
220+ games here.
The only real solution would be to lock the Ascended armor behind a wall. Specifically, only being sold to people who are in Legendary.
The reason being is that everyone will try hard. People will want to win. It will become competitive. From selling Ascended to nearly everyone, it can then be sold to nearly noone, which I think is more optimal given how difficult it is to obtain Ascended armor normally.
I found an elementalist build that carried my way back up though. After ridiculous loss streaks (10+), I picked up this one build that carried myself up silver, and I’m almost back to Plat
So basically, you lost points because you didn’t know.
You learned, adapted and applied your knowledge and it rewarded you by rising through the ranks.
Kind of like how an mmr system is supposed to go.I’ve been seeing a ton of players claim that the system is busted but if everyone deserved to win then it’d make pvp more stale than it already is.
I remember during a game this thought popped up in my head, “Both teams are struggling to win. Not just ours!” This is important, because when someone loses a game, they blame their own team. However, the other team tried their hardest too, moreso than the losing team.
What players don’t understand is that to win you need to simply try harder, and convince your teams to try harder. Issue commands if noone’s talking. Become the captain of your team.. because if you don’t, your team’s gonna lose sight of trying…
In every game I’ve been in, I say things like “If you need heals, run around me or something” or “Who wants home?” “The rest of us go mid” “I’m holding mid” etc… commands are important, especially for coordinating a game.
MMR is working sort of accurately, though not to boast I feel OP in a lot of games (except for the occasional great players I come by) Glad to finally be approaching a division closer to my skill level. Loved this season, then hated it, but now I love it again.
Reason: your teammates are good enough to carry
Because of the above, you’re just lucky. Or maybe you’re a decent thief. Dunno
Trust me, it’s extremely frustrating. When your rating slides down and down, it can make GW2 be hell.
I found an elementalist build that carried my way back up though. After ridiculous loss streaks (10+), I picked up this one build that carried myself up silver, and I’m almost back to Plat (used to be in Plat, dropped to Silver 2). So, “learn 2 carry”. Not an insult, not an offense.
I run a strong team support build. Support builds are like the backbone of a team. Weak/no support, the team falls apart. Strong support, teams are cohesive.
Many people like running DPS builds, or bruisers, etc. Occasionally, you’ll get an ele auramancer on your team, which in my opinion is the best PvP support in the game atm, moreso better than Druid for team support.
Because many teams neglect support, they fall. If you run a DPS build, odds are you’ll fall in line with more people with DPS builds, and, well, you’ll fail. Not saying it’s impossible to win without support, but having support is crucial for survival.
My point is, find a build that is able to carry, both using your skill and how it affects your team composition. Then you’ll start climbing again.
Want to know what all the FotM / OP classes have in common? They all use heavy conditions to the point of utter ridiculousness…Necros, Ele, DH, and Warrior are the culprits here. If there wasn’t a capture point system then I would be alright with it, but seriously all you have to do is just spam everything on the center of the point it’s stupid.
If conditions do not get reduced in damage then you should make condition clearing more effective. An example, the Engineer’s purge gyro should remove 4 every 3 seconds instead of the 2. Thrown elixirs should remove 2 instead of 1.
Conditions are supposed to be a DoT not burst which they pretty much are these days. Do this and maybe we’ll actually have some build diversity again. There is a reason why you see an average of 2-3 DH in almost every game and sometimes even 4-5.
Great post, even a little humor with claiming ele is a culprit.
What about Mesmer who can generate 10+ stacks of Torment?
Another thing I get really ticked off of is when some class decides to run a totally contradictory/made-up junk build (bunker thief, bleed ele, or even a build that has absolutely no benefits or trait synergy). Note my examples were actually observed in-game…
I mean, the phrase “a true pro can play any build” is somewhat true, but if it’s your fifth time playing a class, please don’t theorycraft – stick to the meta and use the meta as a foundation for theorycrafting.
I loove running bunk auramancer. Love it. It’s the ultimate troll build quite literally. Takes all kinds of bursts and has trouble dying (at least the WH variant).
Whenever I see an ele camping on a point, I chuckle – that’s what I do too, though only on mid since most of the enemy team goes there. Such a trolly build we have. Another bonus is the group heal
> If your skill rating is below the skill rating you received from placements, you gain more points winning than losing
> If your skill rating is above the skill rating you started on, you lose more points losing than winning
When your teammates don’t know what the heck they’re doing, failing to rotate and constantly rushing mid when our team is clearly a) dying b) the entire enemy team is zerging mid c) noone is alive except that person
The above reason accounts for most of my losses. And I have a ton.
Hey man its our trait in tempest called Elemental Bling. It allows us to change amulets mid combat so most eles will have menders on and switch to marauders every 9seconds or so. I agree its completely broken
I know right? XD Bunker and DPS isn’t a thing, unless you’re talking about Air Overload which has a fairly long CD.
Is this a meme? DH now this?
Nerf necro. Too many condis and way too much HP. JK obviously.
Ele’s skills are similar to one another. Some are useless. Some are good. But eles have very low HP, no stealth, two invulns (one of them is a utility that has a long CD) and a few other things.
The beauty of elementalists is how versatile they are. The thing is, they’re easy to read. When you memorize all of their skills, you can counter them appropriately. Often times, attunements won’t be finished with their CD, and with what HP remains, you’re trying to survive.
They aren’t the best at DPS, but they have a ton of restorative options.

I started running ele support and carry most of my teams with sustain. You should too. It’s the only way.
Or just get lucky.
Edit: I mean, you should find a build that carries in order to win. Like my D/W Auramancer provides a stream of hp to my allies, greatly reducing their odds of wipe (plus there’s some DPS too)

fun enjoyable match
All DPS. Your team won.
Thing about DH is they’re completely DPS oriented. Support Guards isn’t even a thing.
As a proud bunker elementalist, I can run through the traps and heal my health points. I can follow that up by running back into the traps and wasting them, only to heal again. And again.
And again.
But can you do enough damage to kill the DH in the process? Because otherwise you are just wasting your time.
The point of playing ele support is to provide boons, heals, and group sustain. I’ll be deactivating traps with allies around, not just solo. Mender’s does a surprisingly good job at dealing damage, especially with overloads and such.
As a proud bunker elementalist, I can run through the traps and heal my health points. I can follow that up by running back into the traps and wasting them, only to heal again. And again.
And again.
I like warhorn more than focus. More healing and damage, CC doesn’t require a target. Sand Squall gives protection and some healing. Earth Overload is another magnetic aura, so earth is basically your go-to attunement for projectiles.
I chose S/F for the build because that’s what most people like more.
Superspeed trait is one of the best traits ele has, the synergy it has with fresh air is insane, so I’d probably never play fresh air without it, but otherwise, if you are playing for fun and don’t plan to be in the top 250, you can do fine on the build.
You can easily swap traits, at the cost of a trivial amount of ferocity.
If you absolutely hate Tempest, replace the spec with Water for condi cleanse.
Change the heal to GoEH / SoR, elite to FGS.

Here’s that powerful variant of my older build. It’s pure DPS, so don’t run alone.
Pros:
• Powerful bursts, damage
• Projectile hate, invuln, some support
Cons:
• Low HP, no condition cleanse, low toughness
• No superspeed
I get that the S/F ele community can’t live without sustain, but honestly if you’re running DPS, go all out with it. At least that’s what I did.
I’ve played this in Ranked a lot by now. It helped me massively in my placements (upper-tier Gold division).
The thing is, everyone expects ele to run bunker auramancer. When you unleash your burst and instawipe them, that’s when they know they underestimated you badly.
Peaking at around 260% ferocity, this painful build is the deadliest an elementalist can be.
You can replace Rune of the Wurm for Rune of the Scholar for a damage upgrade, at the cost of HP.
Play around with it. Find rotations best suitable for you. If you do the bursts all at once (Phoenix -> Arcane Blast -> L.F. -> Air Attune -> Air 2 -> Arcane Wave) you’ll be gloriously destructive. It’s like a long-range thief with unpredictable bursts.
Overloads are a wild card in a battle. Use the environment when overloading to hide yourself, then when the overload (preferably air) is almost complete, teleport using L.F. onto a point. Make sure there aren’t any CCs (Guardian shield, Mesmer fields) etc.
Arcane Shield will regenerate every 48 seconds per trait.
Other than that, the rest is up to you. Good luck!
DPS ele will never be viable. Just like bunker or support thief will never be viable. That’s class design
This is a terrible analogy. Ele is top DPS in PvE, Thief has never been bunker.
You didnt see my loss streak
Hmmmmm maybe have a certain type of currency only available in Legendary rankings used to buy the Ascended equipment. It’s way too easy to buy the Ascended stuff as of this moment, and locking it in Legendary would not only promote good play, but also make it a lot more difficult to achieve.
It does suck. I have an image around here where I had a full-list loss streak. Thinking my support build was supporting bad teammates, I dropped it and scrambled for builds to play with. I finally used my zerk build and got a whopping six win streak, after losing to a little mistake I made (reviving a teammate rather than killing the enemy, ughI was such an idiot)
they said that my traps that i use when activated would reveal myself
That… is not true at all.
Pro players like Phantaram and Zoose are in the top 50. It isn’t a coincidence.
As far as I’m concerned, there is only one trap that reveals stealthed people.
I highly doubt you’d get banned. You’re running Thief with Rune of the Trapper, right?
A lot of players have called others “hackers”. I see players who say “WOW speedhacker!” or “Why are you always immortal??”
For the speed, the person they were referring to was getting superspeed. They were an Elementalist. Everytime you step into air you get superspeed (assuming you choose a certain trait).
For the immortal part, it was a Guardian.
I even had someone who reported a mesmer for CLONING themselves. hhhhhhhhhh
These accusers are simply newbies who have never thoroughly tried out all the classes and therefore don’t know what they’re even saying.
(edited by Abelisk.4527)
Good news: those players will keep on dropping, and dropping. If they’re really that bad, they’ll essentially be dead weight to their teams. It’ll always be 4v5 with them around.
It’s awkward for me. Nobody plays anything – they just… stand there waiting.
Look at it this way.
If you’re trying your very best, like no one ever was, the odds of your team winning are going to be much greater.
Why? Because in order for a team to win, they have to be better than the opposite team. Simple as that.
Ok, went and started playing with my Zerk Arcane Tempest build. Boom! 6 win streak. Time to start climbing again.
I wanna see more events like this. Something like Chak Gerent pre nerf.
my glass power ele tears average warrs to pieces
This is all you need to know.
If you account name is close to your Ele name, I can tell you why your teams are losing -> Its your play and your build.
You were on my team and we lost horribly because you went down in seconds, next game you were on opp team and we dropped you in seconds and won.
Thank you for posting that screenshot actually, it confirms that people on the forums complain when it is indeed their fault they are where they are at. There is no way, with the play I saw in two back to back games, you deserve to be at the same MMR I am.
I was running a glass condi build that I dropped two matches after.
Absolutely awful. If Anet wants Ele to be a condi build, at least give them something that generates a lot of condition passively. Guardian has Torch 4 and Virtue of Justice, both passive burns. In addition, they have way too many invulns and prots for their own good.
The rest of the matches were me running different builds – D/F auramancer, D/W auramancer – both very great in support. I then ran Mara Staff and finally broke the streak.
It’s all luck. I contributed something to my teams in all of those games, and that’s what matters. Mind you I was 6 points away from Platinum, and I don’t know what the kitten happened but ohhhh did it drop. It dropped very bad. I was like 3rd on my Friend and Guild rating list, now I’m on the second page. Oh well, we still have a lot of time left.
Started on Gold Tier 2, was one win away to Plat, now back to the very bottom of Gold Tier 3 thanks to a godawful loss streak (had a few teammates that were pretty bad on my team 3-4 times in a ROW)
Tip: Don’t play at night in the U.S. The games suck. I was on a win streak this morning but that all changed when the fire nation attacked….
…err when it turned nighttime
DH isn’t OP. Bunker eles can run through their traps, wasting them completely and just heal their health right back up, lol.
Even then, Fresh Air eles can just destroy DHs in teamfights with all that ranged burst.
Condi bombs eat them up.
Source: personal experience
I have a strong DPS ele, sooo
If you DC mid-game often, you’ll be placed in a tier where everyone DC’s I think, topkek.
Agreed completely!! Best season we’ve had so far.
The threads are coming. Flame Auras up everyone!! /thread
I think Bitterfrost Frontier is turning me into a Svanir.
and of course Aurene mount
