If one is “casual” due to time issues, HoT offers very little because of the time commitments for the meta events.

come on, there’s always a massive event going on in one of the maps, just have to check the timers to see what’s on and jump in.

or you can even adjust your play time a bit, to coincide with the main events (i do when possible)

and the hot meta events are easy enough to be completed by any player.

really? what’s the point of tanky gear? to be able to soak damage.

What do you do if you don’t have tanky gear? learn to position and dodge properly, because you cannot eat damage.

so, glasscannon favors a high risk high reward playstyle, and tanky favors a low risk low reward playstyle.

If that’s not correct, if you are still avoiding damage like a pro, then the tanky stats are wasted on you, and you should be running glasscannon to maximise your output.

You should play engi, last i heard the rotation is something like 639 skills

yeah, that’s one of the major flaws of this game: playing a complicated rotation means just sticking to the same pattern, as you cannot really see the cds on your skills.

In wow, you could use any number of skills you felt were useful and see the cd of ALL of them at the same time, allowing you to use a priority cast order.

I don’t have access to all ranger pets. Kitten! i don’t even have a ranger. Anet, please fix this excluding kitten!

Nothing is excluding when it’s the player the one deciding what to do or not.

I, for example, hate JPs and don’t plan to finish them all any time soon. I don’t feel excluded out of the content by anet, i simply don’t find it fun and so i don’t do it.

There’s one thing, though, that would make raids more ‘including’: give them their own lfg channel, please.

If you give casuals enough content of their own, they wouldn’t be insisting on doing raids. That’s the real problem here.

All the content in the game, save for raids, is casual content. Casuals don’t have nothing to complain about.

The timers avoids that everybody and their mother run tanky builds and complain the boss takes too long to kill and is a bore fest.

Also allows for soft punishing mechanics: you get teleported, ok, you don’t die, but you are wasting dps. You can recover from that, but do it often and you will not be able to. this wouldnt be possible without a timer, since group heals can compensate for people eating damage where they are not supposed to, and instakill mechanics are something different.

Also pushes everybody to improve their output under strain. It’s easy to do a quick high damage rotation when the boss is not going to touch you because he will be death before he can even target you, but it’s more difficult to excel when you have to avoid getting killed, and it’s also much more stressful and, at least for me, fun, if i not only have to care about not dying, but also kicking the kitten out of the boss.

You can assign any number of people to go to the green area so there’s always a backup if someone fails.

On the other hand, only one person out of 25, with lag or just focused on his 25-skill-rotation, standing on LKs defile, meant certified fail. Not to mention defile is just one mechanic out of the many at play during LK hard mode (I remember the phase with the harpies getting out of whack very often)

Only one guild, in a game with 10 million players, managed to kill Lich King in heroic mode using a 5% buff (after that, the second guild that did it used a 10% buff, and many more came afterwards, but all better geared or using more buffs).

Meanwhile, Vale guardian was being killed by pugs the week after it came out.

Draw your own conclusions (and if it’s that random gw2 players are better than hardcore wow players, you are dead wrong).

And no, i am not requesting anet to increase the difficulty level. i think it’s perfect as is. Not so easy it can be AAed to death, not so hard only a dedicated guild of pro gamers can kill it.

if your skill level is around, say, rubi, the higher the division, the better players you are going to be paired with, and you won’t be forced to go out of role to help your failing teammates.

Once you reach a division that matches your skill level, you are going to start suffering again.

While I agree with the notion of playing to win, a good thief can still throw off rotations, you just need a better plan then “zerg mid”. (Ideally, having two go far and blast from stealth then backcapping mid ect.)

Sadly, a good thief gets wrecked by almost anything that’s half as good.

I don’t consider myself a super competent necro, though i have played my share, and thieves were never easier to kill than now.

Sure, some really good thief can still contribute positively, but only despite his class’s weaknesses.

People fail to understand what ranked is. you play for fun? go unranked. In ranked, you play to win, or you are doing your team a diservice.

A lot of these builds are still tuned to the old meta and would need some adjustments.

As for the list: Celestial staff is not “if you can’t play d/d”.
In the current meta, celestial staff is far stronger than d/d because it has far better group support. The advantage in offensive strength, d/d has to offer isn’t really all that strong when you consider, it has to measure up to revenant auto attacks and dragonhunter traps.

GS/Hammer simply can’t compete with the cc that’s currently around because it has ONLY cc, while any cc in the current meta is just as strong while having group support, instant cast and large AoE tacked on. It’s just silly to bring a cc focused build to a meta, where cc happens incidentally.
I found shoutbow to be really lackluster.
Add Greataxe to the list of warrior builds. It wrecks faces.

As you stated, Ranger is a horrible choice for non-HoT builds.

A friend of mine is currently tinkering with a boon corruption based carrion signet necromancer. It just eats tempests and revenants alive. Maybe once the testing is done, I will post it here.

Spite/curses/soul reaping?

Its something ive been playing around. The carrion frostfire build doesnt seem to pack enough condi transfer to deal with 2 mallyx revenants and, if the other team has a necro, its gg.

tbf even cele necro cannot get past the 90% reliably, if the ele is trying he’ll have no trouble healing that tiny bit of health (you can’t even dagger auto past it to be fair), plus with protection you hit like a fried noodle anyway.

Yeah, if the ele is half good, he will have no trouble tanking your damage until a friend comes (murphy’s law indicates that always the friend to come is going to be his, not yours).

Taking a break when things go bad is a good idea, only i don’t have much time to play, and taking a break means not playing at all. But i sometimes will, it’s better than starting to violently hit the keyboard when you cannot down a guy before a flash revive.

also, i notice my win ratio has fallen once i started playing mid, and i used to do a lot better when i moved around capping points and not minding the team too much. I know it sounds awful, but when your team doesn’t coordinate, sometimes you just have to accept it and try to win in some other way (in one of the last matches i won, i soloed the lord when we were losing by 200 points: i ended up with 2 guys trying to stop me and my team managed to cap the 3 points while i ended the lord).

Remember too there is also PvE. I’ve had a lot of fun in FOTM or just doing Guild events can be really rewarding too. There really is a lot to do in Guild Wars 2. If you want to do big meta-events Dulfy has a great timer.

Fotm i dont enjoy so much… I got to 50 before the expansion came, and now i am only 60.

I like raids though, but it’s hard to get into a good group at the times i play.

Guild events, on the other hand, are some of the most boring things this game have to offer.

with a winning ratio of 50%, you need around 62 games to advance a tier. (EDIT: no. 62 games is what’s needed to get 5 consecutive wins, you can still advance a tier but not with my current winning ratio)

I am a bit devastated right now.

My win ratio has been always around 60%. This has drastically changed once i reached emerald.

My last record is 5-20. All the time i get matched against dragons and their mothers, solo vs premade, ok, i can take a hit here and there, but this is getting ridiculous.

Yesterday i decided to team up. Most in my team where sapphire. I thought: good, they will know what they are doing.

But the competition knew better: the new meta has clicked really fast, and even though we were consistently downing players, they were being flash revived and we ended up dying when they got a lucky proc.

I got sick of it and went to power necro with well of suffering so i could at least damage downed players and it worked, we won the next match against the new op meta.

But still, 1-5 in a team with people that are suposedly above my skill level and were playing rather poorly, that’s so bad (how did they even reach sapphire?).

I see that everybody and their mother complains about losing streaks, but somebody else is winning against them, so, my question is: who is the happy camper? who is always on the winning team?

Most Common Mistakes Made by SoloQers

The probability of having a separate Solo Queue is looking bleak. So instead mourning for its absence, I’ve decided to create a list of mistakes commonly made in order to improve and progress further in the season.

The goal here is to help the community survive and extract enjoyment out of the game despite the unfavorable circumstances. Please add what you feel most SoloQers need to improve on.

I do not wish for this thread to be hostile or vitriolic.

1. Defend the points you just capped.

A lot of times people just wander off not knowing where to go once the team has two points capped.

2. It’s very risky to attempt to 3-cap with a team of pugs.

This is how teams get wiped. A brief 3 cap could easily turn up against you.
Going for that far cap works if heavy pressure is at mid and home.

3. Don’t double or multi-cap

A strong indication that the team is likely to fail is when 2 people cap home at the start.
Multi-capping is not the same as node team fights. Only 1 person is needed to cap.

4. Be map aware

In Khylo for example, there is no need for you to keep trebbing when the enemy has 3 capped due to your team being outnumbered and your teammates just wiped. Or, if you see the point you just capped is contested don’t run away especially if it was home or mid

5. Don’t bring garbage builds to ranked

You are doing yourself and the team a disfavor when you run garbage. If you soloQ, the best builds to run are sustain and some support. I personally get discouraged when teammates hp drop to red and then black in a matter of seconds.

Edit: I know this goes without saying but bring the class you are comfortable with. The ESL meta doesn’t necessarily apply in the first 3 divisions.

I, on e contrary, find that support builds are next to useless in bad teams.

You dont have the damage to kill inferior foes, you dont have anyone to support because everybody is running around like headless chicken.

In those situations, id rather have a decent soloer build, and run around capping points like crazy.

I’m still stuck on tier 4 of division 2 (emerald). Almost every time I solo queue, I notice that the player(s) that are in sapphire are really bad, just awful, and the players in my division generally know what they are doing. Has anyone else experienced this?

Why would anet choose to give bad players an easier time moving up in the ranks? Literally makes zero sense.

It could also be that they are tanking their mmr in order to get easier matchups and have a chance to advance their current tier?

I wish they either used MMR or the pip system, the mix of the two is just brutal. If I’m facing people who are rated in pip tiers above me and getting a 50% win rate, I should be at that pip tier. Instead I can’t move effectively and am punished (in terms of tier progression/legendary progression) by having a higher MMR. It just doesn’t make sense.

Exactly. You should have 50% win rate once you reach the tier where you belong to, and higher than that in lower tiers. It makes no sense to kitten uyour progress because you consistently win against crappy teams. Your progress should stop once you reach the tier you cant consistently beat.

Don’t bother with the achievements, and it’s avoided! Also you only need to win 5 matches on two classes to progress the meta achievement.

You can’t get the wings without the achievements though. I mean, sure, that would fix all the problems, but it’s not an option on the table at the moment.

You hear that ANet? Just fix that and nobody will care about all this PvP mess again.

The wings are for people that succeed at pvp. You most likely wont, as you dont even enjoy the game, so why bother? You still have the rewards track, for people that just grind pvp; instead of actually trying to excell at it.

Remember that ANET makes 90% of their money off the TP. Recirculating gold earned in the game into jewels by players gives them Zero Income.

They make 90% of their money off the TP? you mean, by selling gems?

I sincerely doubt it.

I spent around 80€ on this game (i don’t remember how much the original was at launch). I would have to spend 720€ on gems for your numbers to be right.

I know a lot of people got the game at discounted prices, and some even free. But still, i doubt someone still running a free account is going to spend money on gems.

Exploiters? Exploiters abuse bugs in game,we just found another way to deal with the boss. When we found out people hitting the boss on melee range were not taking damage, we decided it was stupid to force te boss out of that very favorable phase.

Ive loaded the build on gw2skills and there is indeed no access to chills in my build, so unless i was being chilled by something else, there is no way i was the one chilliing the boss. Anyway, thanks for the help.

And as for the runes, some stupid combination to increase bleed duration that doesnt apply chill.

It’s not like chill breaks the bar fast, but it does so slowly. If you dont break the bar the boss keeps spamming the aoe which can be easily avoided, while he remains stationary taking damage. This makes the fight a lot easier, unless somebody slowly chips at the break bar and the boss becomes mobile again.

I am about to punch the keyboard.

Trying to down the vale guardian without ccs, as a condi necro, and it seems i am still applying chill even though i am autoattacking and changed all my traits to avoid applying chills.

I am running:

curses 2 1 3
death 3 1 1
blood 2 3 1

during the cc phase, i was only using scepter aa and enfeebling blood.

Still, a chill would appear from time to time, apparently credited to me (i read another member of the party’s name on it, but they kept blaming the necro).

Is there anything i am missing? My only guess is i can be transferring chills without noticing (the curses auto and the minions) , but the boss doesn’t apply chills, does he?

BTW, it felt a lot better doing the fight as a warrior, and watching them bully another necro instead.

Arenanet: encouraging necro hate for three years, and counting….

Has anyone tried bombing the vale guardian with 3 necros and epidemic? Bouncing epidemic between the boss and the seeker orbs, if possible, should be completely broken..

Even 2 necros should be able to deal enormous damage to the red guardian with this tactic…

I tested epidemic to see if i could kill red orbs so we don’t need so many push skills for them, but they do not die to my damage. They take the damage but the “health” isn’t affected. Idk if its intended or not …

Imo, if it was intended they should be receiving IMMUNE.

I didnt intend to kill the red orbs.

Just bounce the conditions from the boss to the orbs. Second necro casts epidemic on one orb. Third necro casts epidemic on a second orb.

As a result, conditions on the boss are multiplied times four or, at least, the longer ones are….

But after the release of HoT, I’m beginning to wonder if he’s optimal anymore…or if he ever was at all. With the Reaper option now open and the Viper’s stats, etc., I’m thinking there are better ideas out there and I can’t seem to find any Conditionmancer resources post-HoT. On top of that, my Toughness is so high that I actually compete with my Tank for the attentions of the first raid boss, which is embarrassing :/

As for epidemic, it always had a lot of potential, but in the vanilla game adds don’t last long enough for you to even cast epidemic (by the time you build bleeds and finish casting epidemic, everybody is dead already)

Someone with a hardcore mindset who doesn’t have much time to play is probably the most likely to get upset about a lengthy grind for something they want.

The kneejerk place people go with this is to think that when the hardcore mind doesn’t like something, or vice-versa, it is their responsibility to come over to the casual side (or vice-versa). Nothing could be more absurd. Most of us think the way we do from genes and/or years of social conditioning. We don’t change overnight.

I am casual in that i play when i can and for an unspecified time frame (meaning, when my daughters and wife are sleeping). I may even have to interrupt my playing if one of the babies wakes up.

But i like hard content that keeps me awake. if i can play with just the auto attack, chances are i’ll also fall asleep.

My last 3 days playing have consisted of 9 (nine!) hours of raids, with no loot, no kill, no progress to obtaining a shiny. Just the thrill of getting better and better and learning the encounter that, sadly, not everybody had learnt well enough to succeed.

To the OP: please ignore the rude replies. Some people don’t have anything better to do with their time.

As for your request, if they didn’t change anything else, it would make the ele a seriously broken profession.

Fire staff ele has the potential for the highest dps in game, at the expense of being practically locked in the fire atunement. You have the alternative of a more flexible ele using more atunements via fresh air (oh, but i don’t know if you unlock fresh air at level 55, i don’t think so), in which your main damage source becomes air, but you rotate between all atunements using your cds, blasting fields, healing and whatnot. You lose a bit of damage, and you have to use dagger main hand, since since staff kind of sucks for air. I think that’s the dynamic playstyle you are looking for.

Daggers is the best pve weapon

Ill try and update my guide this weekend. So i plan to record the rotation for that.

Basically above 50% its as follows:
gravedigger > Nightfall > both wells > grasping darkness > deaths charge > gs auto till gravedigger > swap to dagger > focus 4 > dagger auto > deaths charge > dagger auto > swap to greatsword > gravedigger and repeat.

Obviously your larger cooldown skills wont be available for every swap. But im sure you understand the concept. You are using gravedigger as frequently as possible and timing it with weapon swaps. Using both dagger and greatsword auto as inbetween skills. And using reapers touch every time you go dagger and deaths charge once every swap.

Below 50% its much simpler. Gravedigger spam and use nightfall and wells on cooldown.

I’ll try that.

So far i’ve been using: locust swarm > wells > dagger aa till lf is around 90%.
Grave digger into nightfall > deaths charge and spiral > reaper aa > grave digger and swap back to dagger till lf is around 90% again.

I was a bit surprised at the numbers i was getting, and even in full berserker the necro is pretty durable so i was always last man standing. At this point i want a recount tool more than ever, to stop guessing what the ideal rotation/build is.

So I finally went into the new expansion. This Map is WAY to hard core for me, as a casual player. Every Hero Point is a freaking champ? Really The whole thing is simply confusing, and its hard to find anything.

So its impossible to really wonder around alone, no way you can snag allot of the Hero Points alone, and good luck finding allot of them.

In my humble opinion, the whole expansion needs one serious nerf. Leave the hero points at 10 points, turn them into vets, calm down all the freaking mobs, let us casual players enjoy the game, and do so alone. No fun if you have to spend all your time running for your life, instead of enjoying the game, exploring the map, and checking out the fun stuff.

Please no.

There are enough autopilot maps in this game already. The fact you only know how to play in autopilot doesnt mean that’s the only way of playing.

The maps are great as they are now.

So about that zerker meta...

I don’t think ArenaNet understands how to design PvE. Raids enforced the very thing they wanted to stop.

In other words, unless you beat phase 1 before 6 minutes, 30 seconds you will not have enough damage.

It’s a very good design decision if you ask me.

It allows for more variety in content design: you now have three things that prevent you from beating a boss:

1- punishing mechanics: where you fail to execute and you cant recover. You cannot have too many of these, or the game becomes cheesy. The lightning is one example.

2- can recover from it with build diversity: small doses of damage that is avoidable but using your heals or some dedicated healer may be better than spending 90% of the time runnin/dodging

3- can recover with enough dps: you are teleported away from the boss if you stand in the wrong spot. This is a soft mechanic, because you can fail to execute and still come back, but you fail too often and here comes the enrage timer! No enrage timer, and this mechanic is worth nothing.

So getting rid of the enrage timer gets rid of 33% of the mechanics to make an encounter fun. Even worse, it doesnt push players to play better.

The first boss is great as is, and i havent been even close to beating it yet.

i felt a bit out of place.

They told me to go condi, and stay mele, not going to the green wells (while reaper is so good to reach them and tank the damage…)

so i used the sinister set with the reaper dhuumfire. I was told to go red with two engies. It turned out the red boss was dying first, by a big margin, so i swapped the scepter/dagger for axe/warhorn for more direct damage and lifeforce regeneration.

I think we are much better with the boss that has to be debuffed. We have so much potential for that.

In the end, we weren’t even close to beating the boss. We were underperforming (people getting teleported) so not enough damage and ended up wiping sooner or later.

but it was fun. next time i’ll probably try ele, i’ve seen videos with the tempest doing some crazy damage.

exactly what map do you need to complete in magus falls for necromancer’s cache? i completed verdant brink today, and didn’t get anything, much less the necromancer’s cache….

But that is I think the way the spreadsheets should be used; to find the optimal choices in gear, traits, skills, weapons and skill rotations. It should be used to answer the question to how someone playing a necromancer has to play to achieve the maximum possible damage output. Comparison between professions would indeed not be accurate with just the use spreadsheets, but a large difference in damage output could suggest possible imbalances between professions. If the damage output of optimal setups of two professions are calculated and one is shown to have double the damage output of the other, would you think find this problematic?

Yes, i agree with you. Having your theoretical maximum dps be 50% of some other profession’s maximum, would imply there’s a severe imbalance, unless you could reach your 100% easily with the other profession not being able to survive the encounter or not reaching even 50% of its potential. (and even in that case would be a serious imbalance, as the inefficient profession would still have a great edge in bursting phases)

Necros deal subpar damage (in ideal situations). You are glad that enemies kill your pets instead of you, but other professions can survive as well, with good positioning and timing of their skills. In a perfect scenario, being tanky at the expense of less damage is not a good idea.

Just try to use an elementalist and you will see the very noticeable difference in damage. If you can position yourself as to constantly deal damage without dodging all the time and interrupting your own casts, you will deal significantly more damage than with the necro.

What do you base that on? Not trying to be an kitten , I genuinely want to know. For example it could be your own experience, tests on youtube, spreadsheets e.t.c.

I base it on spreadhseets, and countless dungeon runs with the necro and some with the elementalist.

But i am not saying that elementalist is better than necro 100% of the time. In some fights, you spend most of the time dodging with the ele while the necro keeps kicking butt.

In some fights, the boss is constantly on the move and staff ele is worthless (don’t know why anyone would take staff ele for said fights, but there you go)

But the main reason people think necros are subpar, is because the spreadsheets said so, at least until HOT got released (by the way, i am pretty sure in the spreadhseets they never calculate lich from dps, while for some fights having 100% lich uptime is perfectly feasible)

GW2 took it to the extreme and erased player interaction. The only thing you can do to another player is resurrect him and buff him. But not attack him. Keeping the pve and pvp appart wastes a lot of potential, since the pvp maps have no lore and are pretty boring.

There’s a reason WOW’s PVE servers in total have a lot more players on them than PVP servers, that’d be the same reason games like GW2 and LoTRO don’t have open world PVP.

yes, there is a reason. but they could have added dueling as an option to limit open world pvp to the people that want to open world pvp.

Ideally, team dueling would be great and open a lot of possibilities for role playing reasons.

I do not understand your previous statement though, considering what you just said now.

It would prove you are better with the necromancer than me with the ele, but i don’t need to send you a video for that, i assume it’s that way as i am not that experienced with the ele.

You didn’t understand my previous statement. Period. I used the words ‘perfect scenario’ or ‘ideal situations’ or something like that. I was referring to spreadsheets, which don’t account for real fights and you having to survive in order to keep kicking kitten . There are some fights that come close to being a perfect situation (dungeon bosses that die in no time)

To the people saying you need the spreadsheet in order to make a fair comparison between professions, i say no. The spreadsheet helps to know which stats to chose given a rotation you know you can keep, or help you realize that lich form is better than gravedigger spam, and things like that, but you cannot compare two professions using that info, because you don’t know how close to 100% each profession can be played by an average player.

Well, including plot twists because you feel there HAS to be more homosexual relationships in the game is a bad idea and will not be very well received. If you would have to catter to inclusion and empowering minorities, then the story would completely lose its direction.

BTW, technically speaking, sylvaris cannot be homosexual. They are antropomorphic plants that look like either male or female, but they don’t have a sex.
