GW2 and Other MMOs - Differences in Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Aenesthesia.1697

compared to other mmos I played:

gameplay: in those other mmos, every skill i used was meaningful and almost crucial. In gw2, I use most of the skills because they are on cd. Also, there’s no direct way to measure the damage you are doing, so you don’t know if the skill add something or you better save them. The most noticeable example is the cc. Some ccs take longer to cast than the duration of the effect. Why would I bother?

No raids: I know many people would disagree with me, but raids have the same effect than fractals with ascendeds: it creates a challenging content and rewards things that help you better clear said content.

The problem is, the rate drops in fractals are appaling, and the dugeons are not challenging until you clear them for the 30th time. Never, EVER in my life, did I clear a whole raid 30 times. And I would usually get all the gear I could want in 4 weeks.

social: having no need to form a group means that you don’t actually talk to anybody. People just move from point a to point b killing things. In those other mmos, you have to socialize, form groups, survive hard experiences with other people, it helps create in game friends, of which I had many in WoW. I have 0 in GW2.

No immersion: I don’t know the cause of this problem, but it’s less immersive than some asian mmorpgs with ridiculous clothing design. And that’s a lot to say.

And that’s just a few things I can mention without giving it too much thought. There are many others.

It’s a sad truth, but low RNG encourages business in the long-term. What’s the point of playing a game if you beat it within hours?

Actually, you beat fractals every time you finish it. Not when you finally get the drops you want.

All this talk about carrots and sticks was just bullkitten, I could get the top tier armor in WoW in a month or so (just about the time it took my guild to kill the endboss of that patch) and I didn’t even care because all I wanted to do was to rip the endboss. Here, all I can do is see which fancy armor my character can wear and farm endlessly till I can buy it. No mid term challenge worth mentioning.

Gw2 most grindy game ever..?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Aenesthesia.1697

does anybody else think that the whole Idea of needing a precurser or puting so much focus on gold has made Gw2 into a grind?

Yeasayers will tell you that you don’t have to grind anything to play the game and so, this is probably the less grindy game ever.

Of course, they forget that you don’t have to grind anything in any mmorpg if you don’t want to do it. By doing so (not grinding), you are left with sub par equipment and as such cannot competitively clear the high end content.

The thing is that… GW2 doesn’t have high end content! So, duh, no need to grind to play it. Get it?

And here comes the evil part: even though there is no high end content, Anet still gives you unending grind if you want it. Just don’t complain about it.

Me, I only play the game if it’s entertaining. That means I haven’t crafted my ascendeds, I haven’t done fractals 40 (lost interest around 24), will never have a legendary weapon and…. cannot find too many reasons to keep playing, to be frank.

If you have a job you enjoy, there’s a real chance you’re going to enjoy it more than at least part of the legendary scavenger hunt.

Fair point. Actually, little parts of the grind this game has devolved into are more fun than my job, which is why I have almost completely stopped playing.

the kitten TRUTH

^ this.

The thing is, if you want every dungeon to be doable by every class combination, then no skill any class has can make a real difference. If you add the fact that conditions don’t work as expected (should put out more damage than direct damage in long fights), then the best thing you can do is stack 5 zerkers doing insane burst.

I only run dungeons for the gold when I want to try a new build. Otherwise, it’s as rewarding as throwing a coin.

actually, engineers do quite some damage in PVE, and insane range damage, if you factor in that you are destroying things from a safe distance. Also, they are bursty, which helps killing some nasty things fast.

You probably don’t hit as hard as a warrior (that’s debatable), but youll never have the chance to find out, as warriors are waiting for a full warrior + mesmer lineup, instead of actually running the dungeon.

In spvp I haven’t played them much, but I’ve read and it seems reasonable, that they can defend a point with the insane CC.

In WvW, throwing your grenades from a safe distance seems like a nice bet, and there are builds that put you in the middle of the enemy zerg, for some nice chaotic mayhem and frustration spreading.

Coming from a necro, I find the playstle quite refreshing, and I don’t miss anything (well, the survivability while running zerker builds maybe).

Problems with Engineers and Legendaries

in Engineer

Posted by: Aenesthesia.1697

Aenesthesia.1697

Aw, come on, you want to know why Anet ignores this post? Because it makes no sense!

First of all: legendaries are not the end game of GW2. Period. Don’t mistake the content with the reward. And engineers can do the content there is exactly the same as anybody else, and get the reward as anybody else (though there’s less choice of weapons for sure).

Second: if you don’t ever use the weapons you have, you are doing something wrong. Rifle is amazing, and way cool, and guns are very useful with blinds, fire, and shield as an offhand is mandatory for wvw.

Third: most legendaries are awful. Why would you want one? find something that better matches your character.

Fourth: Wait. Is this post for real or are you just some bunch of trolls? Engineers are awesome! the sixth class I try, and i leveled it in no time from all the fun I had playing it.

Greandier: badly designed trait

I agree with the OP. Grenadier is a good trait, but poorly designed because the Grenade Kit is not useful without it.

It’s not the only one. For example, flamethrower is not viable without juggernaut and deadly mixture. That’s 40 points you have to spend if you want to put out mediocre damage with the ft.

Ascended Armor Grind

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Aenesthesia.1697

Aenesthesia.1697

You’re mistaken. There’s already no “required” grind in the game. You make the choice to grind for the Ascended gear, therefore it’s your own doing.

But in what way is this different from any other mmo? I mean, in WOW you do the grinding or you do not. And I knew very few people that cared at all about the gear. All we cared about was downing the end boss, which is not a grind but just playing the game. The only grinding necessary was once you leveled your toon, to get the first pieces of gear needed to enter a raid and not completely suck. Once you started raiding, you would eventually get the gear needed to progress (and elite guilds cleared all the content on the first day, meaning that you didn’t really need the best gear).

here, anet throws a grind alternative for those who want it, but no challenging content
to get it, so you get the best gear doing the same boring repetitive things you do to get the most basic things in the game.

For the moment, we can opt not to grind, not to go for ascended gear. But… what will happen once the grinders complain that they already have the ascended and need a new tier? Then the difference between ascended plus and exotic is going to start to be too big to ignore it…

World firsts are incredibly stupid, it creates nothing but a toxic atmosphere amongst players.

These two new bosses have done nothing but bring the elitists of this game to the surface, so much fighting and name calling in map chat its toxic.

This game is NOT World of Warcraft, if i wanted to do hard mode raids and compete for world firsts i would go play WoW.

I thought GW2 was meant to be different from other mmos, why then have ArenanNet copy/paste hardmode raids from WoW?

Actually, for a celebration post like this one, the only ‘toxic’ thing I see here is your post. Fighting and name calling is not the result of the introduction of these new bosses, is the result of people not wanting to cooperate, and people not being tolerant. Both types of players exist in the game with or without these bosses.

Now, to call something that can be completed by > 100 random people a ‘hard boss raid’, really confirms that you don’t know what you are talking about:

- You either don’t know hwat a hard boss raid in wow was like (I downed the marionette after 6 tries, all with different, random people, and it takes like 50 tries to down a hard mode boss in wow, playing always with the same people using a very studied strategy), or

- you haven’t stopped to analyze the marionette (or even the wurm) and see that the tasks you have to accomplish during the event can be carried out by any casual player.

RE: The Tequatl-ization of all new content

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Aenesthesia.1697

Aenesthesia.1697

Hi.

I’m a casual player.

Events like Tequatl are completely inaccessible to a person like me.

No they are not. In the Tequatl fight you can play defense, which basically consists of killing mobs and running from here to there to lend a hand from time to time. The only hard part of the tequatl event is organizing it, but the individual tasks can be carried out by anybody. All you need, as a casual player, is to find out when the battle is going to take place, and commiting to it for 15 minutes which, as a casual player, I am sure you may have from time to time.

I am a casual player and have downed Tequila, the Marionette, and will probably down the wurms some day (or maybe not, I don’t find that boss too entertaining)

But the marionette? come on! it’s epic! even if you fail (which I have done 5 times) it is epic. And you only need to play for half an hour to beat it, so it is perfectly doable by a casual player

How to make the Marionette into a Fractal

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Aenesthesia.1697

Aenesthesia.1697

The general consensus seems to be that people like this encounter and don’t want to see it go. The best solution I have for this is to turn it into a fractal, whether it be a standard or boss fractal. I haven’t come up with a good way to translate it to a 5-man instance but was hoping others might come up with something. Ideas?

For me, what makes the event a total winner, is the massive scale, and the fact if you fail, you fail. Putting it into a fractal would leave the massive aside, and you could try again and again if you failed, making the fractal run longer and the people hate the encounter. So no, there would be no way to take marionette to fractals without taking away the things that make it great.

The Good, The Bad, The Missing

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Aenesthesia.1697

Aenesthesia.1697

  1. Casual content. Many casual players feel really left out of this update. All they really got was the power core farming stuff. Marionette I think is a bit too hard to be call casual content. Especially when so much rides on you during the boss fights.

I think marionette can be completed easily by casual players. The wardens are easy enough, and the event only penalizes entire group fails, not individual fails (except for people kiting warden II away from the mines, argh)

The wurm can also be completed by casuals, but they probably won’t try enough times to beat it. I think we can all agree that carrying toxins to the extractors is not a terribly difficult task.

Why can't we master the Wardens?

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Aenesthesia.1697

Aenesthesia.1697

I just don’t understand why Warden II is so difficult for some people to beat. It is a fairly simple mechanic, run him over his mines when he is spinning, but people just can’t seem to get it down. Before anyone says that some people don’t know what to do yet I don’t accept that as an answer for any of the Wardens, and this is why…

You are completely underestimating the laziness of some people. In other mmos, they get into instances and are kicked out because they really shine in their incompetence. In this game, they are welcome to join in and improve, only they don’t want to improve, they just want the loot/achievements, and end up not being able to burn warden II (it also doesn’t help that just one guy doing the wrong thing can ruin warden II for an entire platform). They don’t read guides, don’t read map chat, don’t analize the situation, don’t reason. Anything beyond hitting the autoattack is too tiring for them. It’s the only explanation I find for it, really.

The only warden, so far, I can see where people would fail, though, is III. I use the dodge food and even with that I gott downed 4 out of 6 tries (not clear what area the bombs affect, and sometimes you run out of dodges). Heck, even I got downed by a bomb upon teleporting to the platform (I got a loading screeen and the first thing I saw was someone trying to rez me).

knowing this is a temporary content, that people are queing for the event, and that many get sent to random overflows due to the zone being full, I’d say it’s rather inconsiderate behaviour for people leveling in the zone not to lend a hand (as there are many other places where you can level). I just did that now, and, while i agree that from the time that it started the tone has been getting worse. I think that is because people are learning how to do it, and when they learn how to do it they think that knowledge gives them a right to be mean.

Actually, the mari event is the only one in the game where I have seen people encouraging each other before the event starts. Never before, have I seen a sense of community in this game, besides the ’where’s the friggin’ champ train?’ followed by a ‘troll’ or things like that.

But having a community means that you have to put up with it, in good and bad moments. As time goes by, people are less and less tolerant because by now everybody should know how the event goes and how to beat the platforms, or at least they should know they have to ask if they don’t. When you see groups failing at the second platform boss, you cannot help but think ‘these people don’t know what to do’ and that, by now, is not acceptable.

Im a civil engineer and I Work 60-70 hours a week in the field. I love this game and really enjoy the time I get to play it. Ive got 4 level 80s, two with map completion, all in at least exotics or better. I unload real money on the gem store regularly.

Im getting discouraged by content like tequila and the worm/marionette because I have not completed any of these, not even once.

Please make content for people like me. We are the ones who actually bring money into your pocket with our real jobs and gem store purchases.

Hey! I am an engineer too, though I don’t work 70 hours a week (really? that’s 10 hours a day, from monday to monday!)

So far, nothing in this game has encouraged me more to play than the mari event. It’s challenging, it’s rewarding, encourages group play and individual improvement. It’s probably the best open world event in the whole game!

The thing that really, really bothers me about your post, though, is the last part I quoted. This game has been designed with you in mind. 99% of the content can be zerged with the auto attack. More content like that keeps coming out with each update. Why do you have to complain about the other 1% that is really challenging and that really feels like an achievement when you complete it? I simply cannot understand.

Now, if you really want to beat the marionette, you don’t need to ditch your life to beat it, just connect half an hour before time, you don’t need to play during that half hour. So, all you need to beat this event is half an hour doing something else, and another half an hour playing. You also need to avoid dying (pick that stew with orrian truffles for extra dodges), and you need a bit of luck with your teammates, but you don’t have to be an elite player or have an elite guild to achieve success. No 120 people team is elite.

I hate to rely on other people.

For goodness sakes, why was it IMPOSSIBLE to just freakin BUFF the other stat combos??? Slightly BUFF the power/prec/crit dmg, or whatever else is viable, for the other stat sets?!?!

It wasn’t impossible to buff conditions but, then, condi would have been incredibly overpowered in pvp.

Condition vs crit would should work something like: crit has more burst and does more initial damage, but conditions win in the long run. in pve, this is not the case, because crit builds destroy things so fast that conditions doesnt’ have time to do their thing. A change was clearly needed.

problem with zerks is that they die very fast and you are forced to revive them to win the boss fight and you will probably die aswell.
chop some damage on the gear and give them survivability, even rename the gear if u have to .

Or dont join in a zerker group as a non-zerker, so you wont drag the whole group down, risking a full party wipe, because your lower dps ends up with a longer fight, zerkers run out of active defenses and dodges and they start to lick the floor, one by one.

Zerkers is fine. PVT is fine. Just avoid eachother for gods sake …

ps: nothing personal, dont feel offended

I don’t think it’s fine. Zerkers are only fine with other zerkers. That’s just not the way the game was intended to be played (supossedly, you could play any spec you wanted). I am able to do quite a lot of damage with my hybrid necro, but sorrounded by zerkers it’s not fun, as they kill things so fast they make conditions useless (which means their damage is unbalanced)

This doesn’t mean that zerker is the only problem: conditions are not fine with other conditions, for example. how dumb is that. And support doesn’t bring enough to justify the dps loss. The pve is unbalanced beyond imagination.

Nerf zerker? Really?

in Profession Balance

2) Useless pve classes . I think alot of people want to nerf zerker because their class will never be accepted in a speed run. I can understand that, why
just not buffing them? So they can enjoy the game like every1 else.

I think this wouldnt work. Zerks kill everything so quickly that i feel completely useless with my hybrid necro. My most powerful attack is epidemic, and before I can build enough bleeds to make it interesting, the other 4 warriors have already killed all the mobs.

Against dungeon bosses the problem is not so terrible, as I seem to be the only guy still applying conditions, so I don’t have trouble with the cap as often but, as soon as another hybrid or condition build shows up, it’s wasted bleeds again.

The problem is that full zerk groups have a sinergy, while 2 condition specs nerf each other.

As for the ‘i should be able to play in full soldier’ crowd, I don’t agree that you should be able to acquire passive defense for nothing. zerk should always be >>> soldier.

How about a trait that allows you to turn the staff into a melee weapon? (battle scythe, not unlike the one used by Evies in Vindictus). We would have the axe for close range, and the scythe for melee cleave. Ozii hit the nail on the head. It is obnoxious that they spam, need to take a break, and their damage is still ticking. Of course you can be smart about this, but I think it merits some extra shaving down.

If you are power specced, then you should be able to kill a condition spec before his conditions kill you. Power/crit is burst, condition is attrition. Of course he will try to kite you, what else can he do? Just bring utilities to break his kiting. Otherwise, if you bring utilities that only maximize your damage at close range, and don’t carry a condition cleansing utility, don’t expect to be able to surive a kiting condition spec. You are basically ignoring all your nemesis’s strenghts and trying to kill it like it was a sitting duck.

I would love to see virtually all condi clears get an extra condi removed, and their duration decreased by 15%. I’d be ok with the way things were if that were the case.

Yeah, and let’s give additional armor to all condition specs, why not? And the cooldown on your burst skills increased in 15%.

I have been playing other mmos before GW2, and then went back to play other mmos after getting bored to death by gw2. I think I have a very different opinion on some aspects:

- They all have awkward camera’s that are not smooth, at all !
- character responsiveness is awful.
- reaction times are awful.
- Boring combat.

You really think all the other mmos have awkward camera? really? I think the camera in GW2 is the worst I’ve seen in any mmo. Unresponsive, and takes the press of a button + mouse movement to control. Take Vindictus, for example, and you can see swift camera movement without the need to press any button. Also, I never saw the camera close in and out like crazy like it does in GW2. In SWTOR you can control the camera more or less like in GW2, but it is so much more responsive that I couldn’t go back to it after playing GW2. It felt like stepping on the brakes of a brand new car after you’ve been driving an old Chevy for years.

By character responsivenes I don’t know what you mean, but gw2 is the only game I’ve played where my spells don’t launch at all due to lag or whatever it is. In other games you get a delay, in GW2, the game just misses that you have hit a certain button.

As for the boring combat, I find other games more fun to play, but that’s a matter of opinion.

Then, you are correct about quality of life.

Interfaces… You are used to GW2 and cannot get used to 5 or 6 different interfaces in one week.

You don’t need a target for anything in vindictus.

As for your conclusion, I think that GW2 still doesn’t offer a challenging experience for the players, and instead of encouraging the players to seek more difficult challenges, it punishes them for doing so (for example, you have to play fractals 30 times before it starts being difficult?)

It’s true that, in many ways, it improves quality of life for the players, but still, as a PVE player (got into this game for the pvp, but i find it quite boring) I have a difficult time finding anything to do past level 80.

Did it today for the first time and wanted to see what people thought about this. For me, it’s quite difficult and the rewards are pitiful, which explains why few people run this path.

The main problem is that ANet has been making things harder+longer (see SAB World 2 for another example), but they can’t up the rewards too much for fear of unbalancing the economy.

In what way would giving good rewards unbalance the economy? How does a cool account bound weapon affect the economy?

No, economy balance is not the problem. The problem is that anet wants you to do whatever you do in game 1.000 times if you want any kind of reward (besides fun, of course). If you play just for fun you sort of don’t care about the rewards. If you play for rewards, pay for it $/&· cause you will have to sweat blood to get your stupid electronic rewards.

TIME TO RAISE THE LEVEL CAP!

You all agree with me? Yes!

Uhh? NO!

First: legendaries still take like 400 hours of farming to get. Yes, that’s 400 hours of mindlessly hitting 1111111. If you have done it, hey, congrats, but there are people who still play the game to have fun, not to have unique skins, don’t ruin their game because you don’t feel special any longer.

Second: what would happen after 2 months of lvl 100? the same thing. Farmers will have a legendary for every weapon combo they can use, and you won’t feel special anymore.

Alternatively, they could introduce legendary weapons that require skill instead of time to get. I am not against that idea.

It’s no different than the guy who spends an extra $60,000 to buy a luxury sportscar over a family sedan.

ah, but driving a sportscar is way different than driving a family sedan. Hell, even looking at it is way different. A legendary? most of them are horrible, out of character, there’s no difference in performance compared to a cheap exotic, and they are just certificate stating either that:

a) you don’t know how to put 600 USD to good use (which is really sad)
b) you don’t have anything better to do with your time (which is really really sad).

1) Dungeons: Provide different difficulty settings, adjust loot accordingly. New dungeons, while we are at it. Raids?

2) Loot: make it related to difficulty and not time. Current system encourages farming, as there’s no high difficulty high reward alternative.

3) open pve: provide challenges with varying difficulty, and according loot. Give players that don’t want to farm something trivial 1000 times something to do, too.

Only lvl 80 in Group or leave....

To put it in a nutshell: STOP kicking lower levels out of your groups, just because it will take 10 minutes longer…. Lets be a good community and be friendly to everyone!!

I’d say you should join a group of level thirtysomethings if you wanna do the dungeon. Otherwise, it’s not fair to expect people to carry you through the dungeon. You know that you will die and do little damage, so you are either clearly expecting the rest of the group to do things for you, or you don’t expect it to take just ‘10 minutes longer’

Can you find people lvl 80 who come along with you? of course you will, there’s always a kind spirit when you need it, but don’t expect everybody to be that kind spirit.

I don't like the "new" world bosses

I agree with what you say, however it is also a badly designed fight to have it time gated. I mean if you’re fighting the dragon and you’re holding your own and oops, times up…that doesn’t seem like a real fight to the death.

As long as you can waypoint zerg him, it’s not a fight to the death. What they should do, is remove the timer, and make everybody that engages teq unable to use waypoints till teq either dies or kills the whole party (or destroys the batteries or laser).

GW 2 was advertised as a fun, casual MMO.

If you think a random casual that plays this game for 2 hours a week can still have fun and remain in the swing of things through these changes, you are wrong. (I’m not even in this category, I play about 12 hours a week, but a few of my RL gw buddies are.) They simply can’t keep up.

But your RL gw buddies have, like, 98% of the game if they want easily doable content. What’s wrong in having a few dungeon routes, a few dynamic events, and 1 world boss you cannot kill without playing as a team with other people? If they made this content easy, what challenge would the people that want one have?

Where's the change? The cause&effect?

Nice! How about: if you fail the event, all the portals in the zone become contested, and you cannot leave using other portals, you have to walk your way out of there, with swarms of enemies chasing you down. Some players would fall and, not being able to use the portals, would be left behind (impossible to rez for two hours, how about that?)… It would make for an epic retreat!

Hi,

I planed carefuly my colors and style. In my case is white+light blue (NOT VIOLET)
I am owner of Meteorologicus that now perfectly fits my style (My zephyrite cap has same light blue effect).

Changing colors to violet/purple will ruin everything!
Do not do it!

Ascended Gear & T7 Mats: Why not wait?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Instead of this gated method of upgrading to T7 mats to make ascended gear, why not wait until a new region (Crystal Desert, etc) opens up and just let us harvest the new tier of materials at a rate comparable to (or slower, if necessary) that of T6 mats? I won’t speak for everyone, but to me that would be an infinitely more interesting, fun, and rewarding method of obtaining T7 mats that what we’re getting.

This would completely kill the game for me. If the new mats dropped only in one region (this means that you can only get them in open world pve), then everybody and their mother would be farming that region 24/7, turning the rest of the map into a desert. I think that, since they are doing it, the best they can do is encourage the already existing maps to be farmed or whatever (i always forget how this heavily farrm intensive game is intended not to be an unending farm…).

I just came here to say, I tried probably easily over 50 times combined on Warrior, Mesmer, and Ele. Finally decided after seeing this thread, to hell with these peeps, I’m pretty comfortable with Necro I’m sure it’s not that hard. 1st attempt I got her to about 30%. 4th attempt I believe it was I killed her. Definitely doable on Necro. The only problem you run into is the lack of endurance regen on a Necro. So of course I used the 40% endurance food. Either way, sure it was a pain, but I did it in under 5 tries, so I feel that the people complaining clearly don’t know Necro that well.

No, you did it in under 55 tries. You already knew this fight very well when you tried with your necro.

But, of course it’s doable, even though I couldn’t beat it yet. But I only tried like 15 times. I’ll try a few times more when I get the chance.

Are you disappointed by the players?

Imagine ArenaNet were chefs. They will open a new restaurant, based on experimental cuisine, bringing exotic ingredients from all around the world to cook unique and hand-crafted recipes. Oh, and they will include a small menu for kids, with hambuger and fries.

If you can offer unique hand crafted recipes, with premium quality materials, and people opt for the hamburgers and fries instead, it doesn’t mean people are dumb It means your cooking skills suck.

Dinamic events? = Zerg farm.
Jumping puzzles? = mad camera headache
Heart quests? = skip the questgiver’s text taken to the next level.
Dungeons? = boring. Generic. Repetitive.
WvW? = Zerg farm.
Legendary weapons? = sleepless farm
No endgame? = skins/gold farm
SPvP? = repetitive to the nth degree farm.
Living story? = achievement farm

You shouldn’t aim for molecular cuisine if you cannot make a decent omellete.

My sylvari Thief, my new main (R.I.P. Elementalist)

Probably original for a thief, but I don’t really like the gownish style… colours are also an odd choice for a thief.

Here’s my necro, in two versions. The former one, with purple and abyss, and the newer one, with the cheap glowy gloves (to replace the CoF carrion ones) and all in abyss.
