Possible future living story: Restore Ascalon

Agemnon.4608

I think it’d be a great idea but only for an absolutely definitive last expansion of Guild Wars 2 for the reasons listed above. The last dragon could be a combination of all of them or a secret one on the moon they all ultimately answer to, or maybe a new arc where the gods are behind the dragons.

The very last story mode chapter could be a raid with very sophisticated AI and copies of your teammates who during the raid go red (despite being on your team) until you defeat their clone and clones of the different dragons could be part of different wings. Like the Zhaitan and Mordremoth wing would be first.

Abaddon is said to have an unnamed predecessor on this page:

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Gods_of_Tyria

Which was good writing because it allows him to be brought in as quite a big deal.

The Mursaat will likely play an important role too.

New And Younger PLayers affecting SPVP?

How do you know they are younger?

That was implied by “no-income.” There’s no credit card required to download the game and play it. Any 7-year old that can get on his/her parents’ computer can download GW2 and play the game. They’re not supposed to, but they can.

Who says they aren’t supposed to? If it’s okay with the parents I say go for it.

What'd you do if you were president of ANET?

Agemnon.4608

Funny, I was about to make a similar post on Reddit. Here it goes:

I just want to make it absolutely clear this isn’t a QQ thread or a complaint thread, but merely a hypothetical insight thread.

1. I would first of all buy all the latest and greatest server hardware, lots of enterprise solution NVMe SSD’s, liquid cooling, Skylake Xeons, and the latest Tegras as well as get started on SEA servers as Southeast Asians and Australians always seem to have issues in this department in western games. This includes state of the art workstations for the devs.

2.Bring in talent from Sega and Heroes of Newearth to help the current balancing team with balance. My personal request from above would be separating PvE and PvP balance. WvW would have a mix between the two (PvE stats but cooldowns and skill duration would be based off PvP.) Stuns would last longer in PvE because vet and elite mobs have much higher health pools than players so to account for that stuns would be shorter in PvP though still useful.

3. Request adaptive AI supermobs for all maps, they’d be picked from a random pool of monsters just randomly plopped down anywhere. So you could see a supermob Shadow Leaper, teagariff, etc., in Orr, any starter zone, or anywhere else part of the overworld. They can and will interrupt events, even metas, but rewards for beating them would be excellent. Big zergs would have very credible chances of losing against them as scaling also effects how many abilities they have access to not just their stats. They would strike once per hour in the world (not an hour per map.)

4.Add a new PvP map that combines some elements from Voidstar and Alterac Valley. You would need to charge at certain points in order to advance while preventing the other side from doing so. There would be bridges, choke points, and no NPCs. Whoever gets to the middle and channels at the finish first wins.

5. Stronghold with a purely channeling at fort map. You need to bust down doors manually and teams are in 20’s. Some could agree to offense or defense, just don’t let the other side channel at your fort (flag raising)! Choke points, hills, maze like areas, and players must cross a middle forcing a meeting between them.

6.I’d pretty much leave the story team to their own devices (well, I’d do that for all but have a list of ideas), but request they find a way to allow an arc where the Inquest captures and researches Jormag. I’d also have skater gear armor (all weight types) and skateboarding masteries for a new expansion. Why? Because skateboarding’s cool and there’d be skater music too. Rule of cool would be the name of the game in the new expansion but still be well integrated with the overall mood and feel of the game. I’d also have strong kungkittenthemes and Cantha. For example monk would be a new elite class for thief. Monk has only two endurance bars, but great at single target CC and burst while also having good sustained healing. His weapon would be barehands (no weapons equipped) which would have ascended mender’s stats and tiger claw is skill 2 and causes blind, skill 3 roundhouse causes daze on the third kick if all connect, skill 4 is chi wave that’s a stronger, wider radius solar beam (druid autoattack) but cost initiative, and his elite bicycle kick is like unrelenting assault and Liu-Kang’s special move but being an elite will obviously be much better than UA in that it focuses on a target instead of spreading out and ignores blocks and stealth.

7. Work on an entirely new game that mixes MOBA mechanics with fighting game mechanics. Once per battle you can challenge another player to a duel where it’s purely a one on one 2D fighting game and the loser would have a much longer respawn time than if he lost normally on the map. Talent from Virtua Fighter would be used for balancing and you would have seven abilities on your skillbar but on the overmap you’d still have health bars and fighting game mechanics like entering certain controller plus button sequences for special moves. Not all moves will be available in the MOBA/fighter mode with the overhead movement. The fighting game mode would be like its own instance but backgrounds would be specific to specific maps.

Since it would be five per team you could theoretically enter six duels, once when you challenge someone and five other times if the other team all decides to duel you at different points. Fighting game mode is purely 1v1 and forced (cannot refuse) if you have a challenger so you can’t have 2v1’s in it (the MOBA battle, which is the main battle however is another story altogether).

The special moves would be attached to your “1” and “2” abilities before or during key thumbpad movements. There would be no EXP or money system but still some NPCs (cannot be engaged in dueling mode).

Controls: controller is encouraged, something like the X-Box PC gamepad but with more responsive and sensitive thumbsticks (aiming arrows in Dark Souls was a nightmare :( ) would be optimal. I’d even collaborate with people from Steam and Razer to ensure I have top notch responsive controls and ensure maximum compatibility with their products (Razer and Steam make good controllers.)

Heroes: One knows Karate and Jeet-Kune-Do and moves fast and would be high tier at top levels but bad for new players, a strong slow hero who is good at lower tiers but as players get more skilled usefulness wanes and boxes, a warlock who is mid-tier at every level of play, mid-high tier speed, and knows Kenpo and tiger style Kung-Foo, and a healer who is low-mid tier at DPS, knows crane Kung-Foo and Aikdo for single target CC, and some other heroes I haven’t thought of.

8. Move most stuff server side to avoid speed and ESP hackers, though Phantasy Star 2 very early on had hackers move stuff around so not fool proof but should make it easier to detect.

9. Get some Guild Wars 2 ads on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, MTV, AMC, Discovery Family, A&E, HBO, Comedy Central, Al-Jazeera, Pivot, Boomerang, and other stations.

Stream; Mesmer are being nerfed out of the meta, Thieves now OP and looking for ways to make rev OP.

Yes, we know we sold the Chronomancer based on Alacrity. We changed our minds after we got your money though and we’re now giving alacrity to Engie and thief.

End of stream. No preview needed,

Mesmer will never be out of meta because they have portal (can transmit other teammates from one node to another) alacrity and polymorph moa while thief is only OP if you have the skill to pull it off (and to a lesser extent power rev) as some moves are clumsy and kind of root you (the third autoattack on sword for example can’t be canceled if you find yourself in a sword 3 situation. Acrobatics and daredevil have a good sync between a modest heal and gaining vigor upon evade, and weapon evades like staff 5 and sword 3 count but shadowstepping away doesn’t.

Then again they did mention changing up acrobatics so maybe the vigor on dodge and increased movement speed in stealth will go away (cries in a corner with the mesmers).

Is GW2 Performance Limited at Source?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

Hi all,

I am a long time GW player and have been playing GW2 since roll-out. Over the years I have upgraded my PC components, and I had yet to see a significant jump in FPS performance. 2 months ago I built a new machine with an I7-5930 (6 cores). I watercooled the machine and it’s overclocked to 4.2 GHz (Prime95 stable). I also have two GTX-980Ti’s (also watercooled, and overclocked). I have 32 Gb of DDR4 memory. My internet is Comcast Blast, and I have 90 Mbps speed.

All that said, I still have not seen a significant change in FPS performance. When I run monitoring programs in the background, I can see my cores never go over 40-45% load, and my two video cards are the same, never even half loaded. I’m running 3 screens (5760×1080), and if I’m in an area with no other players, I get 60 fps (I have Vsync on). If I move to a populated area, I can drop down to 35 fps. This is no different than my prior build, with one screen, or with 3 screens.

I’m wondering at this point if performance is somehow limited by the client server. Does anyone have any insight/input on this?

(Edited to correct my screen resolution)

I have a 4k monitor which is like having 4 1080p monitors and a GTX 970 and have roughly the same performance you do.

I paid in (buying HoT for two accounts ) to have a competitive Mesmer.

ANET just arbitrarily ended that. Apparently, they did it at the behest of the Pro players. On the stream today, both “sunfish” and “rom” complained about Mesmer. Sunfish even went so far as to say he was glad mesmer was gone.

I feel anet disrespected me by selling me HoT then arbitrarily gimping my class into the ground. To add insult to injury it was done to please pro players.

There is no skill whatever in sneaking behind someone and hammering the buttons with your face to do your burst combo. This is precisely what we’re going to see. I predict that Rangers will come out of this very well… I wish them the nerf hammer 100 times over.

Try a thief for yourself. To benefit from many traits you need to officially evade an attack, meaning the word appears so you need to evade in very specific windows to proc healing and vigor. Also keep in mind that dagger/dagger has poor utility and reveal is a source of counterplay. You also need to pay close attention to animations to properly time your moves.

Mesmer also isn’t getting pushed out of the meta, it is the only class with an alacrity field and portal enabling quick group travel from one node to another.

Why an MMR reset is BAD for you

in PvP

Current MMR is already extremely inaccurate given the amber/stronghold exploiting and the fact that Anet changed matchmaking criteria in the middle of a season.

This is my primary argument for an MMR reset. If such loophole abuses were closed and an MMR reset happened then people will eventually get to their accurate rating.

Thief because daredevil and acrobatics sync quite well between the vigor upon an evade and healing upon evasion, short cast times on abilities, teleport to target interrupts, its initiative system means so long as you properly manage your resources you won’t have any weapon skills on cooldown.

Thief is underpowered overall however since most fights, especially the ones that matter are big group fights like 3v3’s on mid. Even here thief can have such use like using distracting daggers watching an important target like an ele or mesmer for a tell. Just hope you aren’t being rooted by a skill like a sword autoattack or staff skill since the skill doesn’t cancel what you’re dong.

I will say I do agree with the change, but in response have to say that the other heals should be buffed or have their cooldowns lowered. 30 seconds is a bit much for everything and while ventari can heal a good bit, unless the tablet gets instant cast and appears when you switch, I just don’t see the point in using the bigger. It’s got great potential just it’s so unwieldy.

It’s good to practice on it now because you can dedicate yourself to seizing and holding points with at least one other person especially given that necro will be meta. Ventari’s tablet 4 can do some big cleanses but you’ll need to dedicate yourself to healing with mender’s pretty much or sage if you’re going for Ventari/Mallyx instead of Ventari/Shiro.

PvP League Season 2

in PvP

Agemnon.4608

I doubt anet even looks at feedback or cares. This season was made a joke by blatant exploitation which anet set it up to allow.

Next season will be wrecked by OP thieves and Mesmers are practically out of the game.

They said they’re reworking acrobatics so you might not have the increased movement speed in stealth or vigor upon evading an attack anymore :(

On the other hand the autoattack speed buff on sword is good. It’s a high skillcap class where you need to improvise on the fly so it’s balanced that way. There’s so much you need to be aware of and there’s lots of passive invulnerability and blocks flying around.

Stronghold was added in an unfinished form. With no creativity. No thought to how it would work. And then not supported at all. So it obviously sucks. The reason for this is:

1, The esports lamers told anet not to support it
2, Anet wanted it to fail so they could say “I told you so”. Some people at anet obviously didnt want to put work into it because they wanted it to fail

Then why even bother introducing it?

We need lots of stability to counter how much AoE CC there is. It isn’t like the revenant stability is free, you need a dodge to activate it and within the context of how much CC is flying around actually feels balanced. Tone down AoE CC then nerf stability on dodge accordingly. Revenant also lacks reliable self-healing outside of Mallyx, which not everyone runs.

in PvP

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

The common denominator is you. Sure there are outliers like AFK’ers and team speak opponents that are beyond your control but

I am not the best player in the world, just average.

What do you base this on? Leaderboard percentile is a good measure (win/loss records are relative to the particular pool you’re in so 45% win/loss ratio at the 95th percentile is more skilled than a 60th percentile player with a 60% win loss so while they matter aren’t as important as leaderboard points in judging skill) but that is taken down.

If you are worse than average in reality it just means you need to learn more basic things including map awareness, rotations, and skill. What exactly is skill however? The word is thrown around a lot, we know it when we see it or a lack of it, but how do we define it?

Skill is the precise timing of optimal skills, especially interrupts and dodges for a given situation. If I have distracting daggers out and someone is glowing light blue for example I know I should spend a dagger within milliseconds because I know if it connects too late he’ll get the heal off whereas an interrupt with that particular ability means he’s locked out of the heal for 10 seconds. I know I have lots of room for improvement because while the skill reliably interrupts certain skills some skills are quite fast so I need to practice tighter reaction time. Since autoattacks have no cooldowns the skill doesn’t work for them but may still be an okay idea to spend a dagger on it just for the pulminary impact.

Or it could be chaining skills like the Glint reveal and sword 5 to ensure you pull a stealthed opponent off a rezzer. Likewise a left arm moved back and pulling in pinkish energy means the moa transform spell is coming so dodge it. There are countless examples.

1.Different classes having access to different exosuits, and they can be customized like armor pieces and can be dyed. If your exosuit breaks you need to gather resources to repair it. Some suits will have cloak while they’d all have overclock and boost jump. They’d basically be semi-mounts and their abilities would replace your utility weapon slots but not your weapons.

2.Martial arts themed elite classes like monk (thief) and black belt (guardian) who have abilities with no weapons equipped. With no weapons equipped in slot one for example a monk could use initiative to tiger claw for some blind or use a skill like solar beam (chi wave) that’s more potent with a wider radius (solar beam is autoattack so chi wave being stronger is justified as it consumes initiative) but still with decent damage then the monk could weaponswap to a base thief weapon like short bow or double pistols. The bare fists would have ascended mender’s stats on monk and paladin’s stats on black belt.

3.Throws, but when thrown you cannot take damage or stunbreak. Each class has unique throws like when an engineer throws he’ll attach mines whereupon landing the thrown victim will take damage from the mines, both direct and some bleeding while the warrior would have an extra long throw, meaning he’ll be able to throw tanks out from the middle of graveyard. Throws are on the same plane as the players so you can’t throw them over anything. Being thrown last two seconds and is an interrupt to any ability, especially blocks.

4.Ranger elite spec (marine?) with rifle. They would gain an initiative bar representing ammo and some weapon slots would feel like a Dingo while others feel like a Locus so a light machine gun/sniper rifle hybrid with skill sets.

5.Balancing PvP with all this in mind. The two monk two marine meta with throws and exosuits will be awesome! :D

He likes pressing the buttons and clicking on stuff, which has caused me no small amount of trouble. He knows he can press arrow keys to move and that number 1 make fire.

He got into an unranked pvp match somehow. He will click on anythign that pops up. So I realize after a while that he managed to get in PvP, so I go over there to check it out. His team was within 10 points of winning so I let him stay on, and they won.

I said all of that to say this. He did better than 3 other people on his team, and I know one of them was actively trying.

He literally ran around and pressed 1 over and over on my glass cannon staff ele and didn’t come in last place.

Matches one sided and boring

in PvP

Agemnon.4608

no if you win you cannot lose pips…dosen’t metter point in big math numbers on 100 match if you win 50 and lose 50 you will gain pip.
the matchmaking is random you have the same probability to have high mmr team or low…
if the matchmaking is broken is broken for you and for your enemy team, is not a factor in gain loss pips.

Matchmaking isn’t random the algorithm for it is in the wiki.

random means you can be in team1 (better team) or team2 (worst team) randomly.
in math term you can’t blame matchmaking system if is broken is broken for all.

If you are talking about the mathematical meaning of random then I can guarantee you it’s not random.

Random by Webster “made, done, happening, or chosen without method or conscious decision.”
Random numbers “A random number is a number generated by a process, whose outcome is unpredictable, and which cannot be subsequentially reliably reproduced.”

The method of obtaining the outcome is defined in the wiki your lack of knowledge does not make it any less deterministic.

ok you need an example :

you are mmr 1000.
you complain that you have this team

you 1000, 300,300,300,300 = average 440
vs
440 full team.

but you can fight in a team with all mmr 1000 vs a team with one that have 2500 and the other very low, with the same probability!

both scenarios have the same probability so matchmaking is not a factor.

You have to understand that rating points don’t have a linear correlation with skill so a 2,000 would be more than twice as good as a 1,000 and a 1,000 is less than twice as good as a 500. Take chess for example, a 1,200 will usually smash a 1,000 while a 1,700 could give a 1,900 a good game. Likewise a 2,500 has credible drawing chances against a 2,700 especially in classical time controls but the 2,700 can see further ahead so he still has better winning chances, just that at higher skill levels smaller details of knowledge become more important as everyone up there mastered the big important basics, but one small advantage by itself usually isn’t enough to win and this applies to most games, online, board, or otherwise. However, a 300 and 500 rated player may as well be equally bad so it’s a tossup.

Tl;dr: The 1,000 rated player would trivially carry that match hard in practice even though the average is technically the same.

The projectile block is also good for blocking projectiles from vantage points like in mid forest.

If it does remain as bad as its current reputation despite the mender’s amulet then there would be better options for rev. It’s the theorycrafting stage at this point and we don’t even know all the changes.

keep it close to your moving keys, remove back pedal, use your mouse

Keep a & d for strafing of you have a Razer Naga Epic (best mouse ever) but if you don’t then rebind them to autoattack and weapon skill 3 and bind strafe left to left mouse thumb and strafe right to right mouse pinkie assuming you’re using a righty mouse and there are buttons on both sides. The dragonhunter was made as the noob stick/bronzestomper class but once you get higher in sapphire the tactic becomes less successful.

Instead of relying on your own skill to succeed you rely on the opponents’ relative lack of skill. I spent most of emerald and sapphire as a druid or elementalist.

Practice on dummies so you can learn proper rotations, watch for tells, and practice your timing. The goal isn’t to burst them down as fast as possible (that’s easy) but instead watching their tells.

If you nerf an OP class or buff an underpowered class things become balanced so instead of rev being pushed out of the meta (if anything staff with sigil of transference and mender’s amulet will increase build diversity by making Ventari somewhat competitive) there’ll be more options, including rev. The facet of light change however may kill power rev outside of organized teamspeak comps at higher levels.

With the amulet changes, I’m not sold on druids doing too well…

Thieves will be in a good spot, but I don’t expect you’ll still ever want to have more than 1 on a team. However, I do expect every team in leagues will go back to having one.

Mender’s looks like it syncs with druid even better than celestial does. You have more burst potential while still maintaining viable healing. Sigil of transference should be decent.

Druids don’t have enough stability go to the no toughness route. They will be hit on as if they were marauder, and can’t heal when cc chained by scrappers, daredevils, or even warriors and other druids. Anything that doesn’t have full support options – healing, cleansing and boons for allies – can’t go the full support route, and would need to take Paladin’s. This also includes Tempests unfortunately because by design they need that vitality and toughness. Except in the case of Tempests, they have the old healing potential of arcane and water, plus that from auras with tempest, so they may be able to return to the D/D bruiser role that they had to ditch due to it having insufficient pressure in a bunker meta.

Revenant has good access to stability and a Ventari build looks like it’ll be well supported with Mender’s. There’s still lots of practice that’s needed to confirm it during the preseason however but the weapon skills combined with the tablet means that energy will be spent like crazy.

The mender’s amulet is coming out which looks good for a Ventari/Shiro build. Ventari just needs some charge times reduced on its skills.

Elementalist can’t get pushed out of the meta because its combo fields with blast, leap, and projectile finishers. Chilling bolts and burning bolts are simply too useful especially coordinating with a character with viper stats.

New Cancer Tier
=Reaper++ – New almost Dire ammy with extra power. It alone is a direct upgrade to its Carrion Meta spec(s). Death Perception patching them up to unbreakable gods.
=Scrapper+ – If Slick Shoes didn’t get fixed. Srapper Crapper + Mercenary or Pally ammy. RIP.

ASSassin Tier
Thief – Likely going to keep Ele, Druid, ad Chrono out of the meta entirely. As it has done before. It already hits hard, making it hit harder seems rather stupid with the removal of Bunkers. Checked by Scrapper and DH, but not countered.
Power Shiro -If Thief fails to keep the above out, this will. Its getting buffed too.

Questionable Tier
DH – Boon corruption
Druid – Boon corruption and Thief
Tempest – Boon corruption and Thief
Chorono – Boon corruption and Thief
Warrior – Boon corruption

Thief can’t keep druid out of the meta because druid brings too much to the table. If a thief tries engaging me I’ll use point blank shot then use my bristleback’s ability to burst it down. I will then use rapid fire to bait some dodges and apply vulnerability. If I ever get too low I’ll proc signet of stone then heal up with CA form and finish off with lunar beam carefully timing the dazes.

(the concept that you could reach a skill cap limit that would lock you into the appropriate league for your skill and not allow you to rise up any further is one a less serious player will take huge issue with. A more serious player will accept their rank cap and understand the mechanics of how match making works)

Matchmaking has lots of problems and due to the client side nature of many things the game is vulnerable to ESP, subtly tuned speed and cooldown, and teleport hacks. Matchmaking also forces a 50% win record so you could run into equally or more skilled opposition across the divisions instead of it getting progressively tougher like it should. People are complaining about even diamonds who rush beast early or rush far, or going for lord early when it isn’t even a blowout. You should only go for lord early when the other team is 100 points ahead to try avoiding dipping below a certain point threshold since you will likely lose two pips otherwise.

[Suggestions] Future Elite Specializations

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

So, I heard a discussion earlier about dual wielding and how some games seem to “force” it, and I realized that GW2 is also one of those games. There’s never a point in not using 2 weapons in this game (or at least a 2-handed one).

So then I got to thinking… what if that weren’t actually the case? What if there was an elite spec (or perhaps even multiple elite specs for different classes) which would allow you to fill your entire skill bar with a single 1H weapon? The elite spec probably wouldn’t give you a new weapon, however it would add 2 new skills to all existing 1H weapons, so in a way you’d still be getting expanded functionality and it’d basically be like multiple new offhands, albeit with a bit less mix-and-match potential.

If it was one class Warrior would probably be the one, being the weapon masters and all it would seem reasonable for them to be able to get the most out of their 1H weapons and get new skills from them.

Of course, there’d be a few potential issues to work around (like sigils) but assuming those could be addressed, what do people think of something like that? Neat idea, or do people feel that all elite specs need to add new weapons without question?

I like duel wielding much better honestly. There’s no reason to take just one dagger or sword if you can use two or pair it with a shield.

I do think however that no weapons equipped would be great for opening up some skills like my monk and black belt suggestions earlier. Monk would focus on single target burst damage an healing and its utilities would include martial arts moves like a sweeping roundhouse for damage and PB-AoE knock down, cleanses, and elite skill that acts like unrelenting assault but has more hits and is a flying bicycle kick like Liu-Kang’s iconic move. No weapons equipped would have ascended mender stats for monk.

Basilisk venom doesn’t have a built in stomp and relies on venomshare builds to really shine.

Sorry for the typo dancing daggers is garbage even in PvE where you somehow get aggroed and focused down anyway making BV superior to it even before HoT.

I’ve been practicing on dummies and the ranger seems to interrupt with PB shot before I can use a dagger or bound dodge it but succeed more against guardian (which is ironically tougher than some real guardians for some reason at least on my revenant) and mesmer. When the mesmer dummy pulls back its left arm it’s going for the moa so I know to use a distracting dagger then. I hit the dummies mostly to watch for their tells and practice interrupts.
