I swear by flamethrower, been using it ever since I unlocked it back in the beta. Is it complicated? No. That’s exactly what it’s not, I can practically afk and put #1 on autoattack and live to tell the tale. You see, it’s all about utilizing those massed hits. And that means critical triggers. I have 30 on firearms, with Infused Precision, Precise Sights and Juggernaut. I have 10 points on explosives for Exploit Weakness. 20 in Alchemy for Invigorating Speed and Backpack Regeneration. The last 10 to tools, just for the Static Discharge (Who doesn’t love Static Discharge?). So, I run ahead and start stuffing those crits down the throats of my foes, gaining advantage as I go. With Infused Precision and Invigorating Speed, I get both swiftness and vigor nearly constantly. Juggernaut gives a rather massive boost in survival, and who’s say no to passive 6 stacks of might (I do miss the stability, though)?

Honestly, I would use flamethrower even if it only had #1. The other skills have their places, too. #2 is handy for a quick AoE between dodges, though I admit I’d like something with a little more utility. #3, need I say anything? Air Blast is an AoE knockback with15 sec cooldown. #4 is for stacking burns on enemies in PvE, and for combo fields. Not the best, but not wasted. #5 is a panic button. An AoE flash blind gives you a second to think of a plan to get out of a situation too hot.

Quoting this so I can try this out later.

Seems legit. I’ve not played a game with magic find in it before, so this is new to me. At first I assumed the base chance was low, and that I would only be adding small percentages to it. However, I’m only in my 40’s right now, and I’m getting buffs with higher percentage than I expected. I also thought this only applied to gear drops, but are you saying these also apply to blue crafting mats?

Ran out and got some tacos. Mexican place just down the street from my office.

Now – I have been assuming magic find was something along these lines:

If I had an item or rune granting +3% magic find, I assumed I was getting this:
(Base Magic Find Chance)1.03 = Actual Magic Find Chance

Do you know what the base magic find chance is?

I think that when ArenaNet looks at a decline in activity since launch, they need to factor in players whose computers have been one-shot by a lightning bolt crit, and are unable to play for multiple weeks even though they REALLY want to be playing!

Such is the case for my poor old computer. We had a Thunderstorm encounter a couple weeks ago, and before I was able to come home and take my computer out of combat, Thunderstorm used Lightning Bolt, which crit my computer, instantly downing it, despite the fact that I had equipped it with Toughness gear in the form of a surge protector (I know this won’t do a kitty’s worth of good against lightning). When I saw my computer in the downed state, I ran over to it, but try as I might to revive it, Computer just couldn’t rez. Tried taking it to the nearest waypoint for repair, and it just wasn’t possible :/

So for now, I can only browse the forums whilst waiting for the insurance check (my router and small TV also died – it was some massive AOE). My account won’t show any in-game activity these past couple weeks (I hope), but I’m really excited to get back to playing!

Gear in other games?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Amos.8760

Amos.8760

I have never really played other mmorpg’s very actively (I played a bit of Aion and WoW beta). What is in these games actually involved in getting the best in-game gear? How often do you have to do your favourite dungeon/raid? how much do you have to creaft & gather with what % of success?

I see so much complaining about the grindy nature of getting GW2 top-tier gear, it would be nice to see how it compares to the other games out there. (I honestly don’t know)

My gear experience, from WoW, was as follows:
– Crafting would very rarely provide good, usable gear for a max level character. Many times, this involved grinding out reputation with a faction to be able to purchase a recipe, or getting a recipe drop from a raid. Many times, these crafted items were not bound to your character, allowing people to sell these items on the Auction House for those that did not want to/could not craft them. I rarely received items in this way.
– Gear would drop from raid bosses, in tiers, with the best gear dropping off of the latest raid. As a raider, I got a good part of my gear in this fashion. Even though the drops were random, and rolled for by whoever could use them (no individual loot), I really liked this system. You really need a good team or group of friends for this to work without people getting upset.
– You could purchase gear with special currency, which you accumulated from running endgame 5-man dungeons or raids. With this system, even if you didn’t get gear from a drop that night, you were still working towards your next purchase.

I wasn’t aware that trying to get loot solely so you could get loot later on made a fun game. Guys, I can’t play BF3 anymore. I got all the gear for every kit, and now my character can’t get more powerful. Must be a bad game.

Joking aside (and really, that’s all the “there should be a gear treadmill in this game” argument is – a joke), this game will easily stand the test of time. A lot of the stuff that people are saying will kill the game if it’s left out was also absent from GW1, and it was still very successful.

GW2 is to WoW what The Human Abstract is to Nickelback; just because more people are locked into one game and hate the other doesn’t mean it’s somehow a better game.

There already is a gear treadmill in the game.
There are stats on gear in GW2. As you level the stats on the gear drops increase, forcing you to take the new gear for the stat upgrade.

How is that not the same thing?

The gear treadmill refers to being max level, grinding out a set of gear, having that gear become inferior once a new tier of the game is released, and then chasing the new set of gear. From what I understand, this does not happen at max level in GW2. Getting stronger gear as you level is not a treadmill – you are not putting forth all that effort and staying in one spot (level).

So you’re saying that GW2 will never have new max level gear released that has better stats than what is currently in game?

That is how I understood it to be. I could very easily be wrong though…

Combos

Posted by: Amos.8760

Amos.8760

Hi Amos, I’m reading the wiki this moment, thx for the tip.

No problem. I had a great time reading and learning about those. The first thing you’ll want to do is get familiar with the effects you can produce on your own, with only your own fields and finishers. These will always be at your disposal. For instance, using my own skills, I can put down a fire field, place explosives in it, and give nearby allies several stacks of might. I don’t know what profession you are (I’m an engineer), but I’ve found Elementalist to be a profession with a LOT of options for combos.

I haven’t been able to play much lately, but I’m really excited to start learning more about all professions’ fields and finishers to be more effective in group combat.

Combos

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Amos.8760

Amos.8760

I find combos to be an amazingly fun part of combat. Knowing what combos provide what effects are part of what make a great player.

The wiki pages have a very well done list of combo fields and finishers and what effects they provide, and they even cross-reference it to show what profession skills can do them.

When you hover over an ability on your skill bar, the tooltip (information window) will say if something creates a combo field or finisher, and what type it is.

In general, a combo field will be an area of effect on the ground, visible by the player. Think of this as the first half of a combo. A combo finisher is an ability that reacts with that field in a certain way. For instance, a projectile finisher passing through a fire field will cause burning to it’s victim. An explosive placed inside the fire field will give might to your allies in the area.

You can use your own fields and finishers, and players can interact with fields that other players place, whether they are grouped or not.

I hate to send you elsewhere for answers, but the wiki pages have all the information that I don’t have time to type right now. Maybe I’ll work up a thread for them sometime.

They can stay, for casual players that like content like that, but the requirement to do them must be removed from what’s needed to complete a zone. I haven’t found any that I wasn’t able to do, but some of them were just purely annoying, and felt like a waste of time, as I was not enjoying it at all, but needed them for the zone completion and the exp that comes along with that

It might because we are pugs, but there always seems to be 5+ mobs a pull. 2 of them are running around trying to smash in my face with a hammer sword while at least one ranged is always on me. The fights seem to last ~5 mins, either with most CC only lasting ~5 seconds with a 45 seconds CD I find myself taking a lot of hits.

Yikes. I assume since you mentioned level 30 gear, you are doing AC. This is the only one I’ve done so far, but I’ve successfully done it several times (engineer here). I run only with my guild and we pull 2-3 (usually 1-2) mobs at a time. Five is too many in AC. I’m not sure what our Elementalist’s setup is, but I know he both damages and heals when he can. He gets downed sometimes, but rarely dies. He’s always been a very good player though – he says it’s because he asian.

may i ask you why you are using ur left mouse button to move ? =)

this game is definitely designed to usw WASD to move that should fix ur problem

we use the mouse to move by holding down both buttons but it often loses target, i cant use WASD because that hand is used for the ability keybinds.

Wow – I guess each player handles their character differently, but this seems incredibly awkward to me.

I generally use WASD (forward, strafing, and rarely backward), using the mouse to turn if I need to. This is in addition to left hand keybinds 1-0.

It is a little awkward. But so is trying to run forward and cast a certain spell, 2 or 5 for example.

I’ll use both mouse buttons to move on occasion when I need to keep moving and cast a certain spell, but 95% of the time I use WASD.

I can do that without any problems, but I have a wicked combination of a gaming keyboard and long piano-player fingers. My 7 through = keys are right above my 1-6 keys, making for easy ability use. and they are far enough from W that I only get slight interference when using 3.

Level 50 Engineer having problems with Ascalonian Catacombs

in Players Helping Players

Amos.8760

I did pretty well on my engineer in AC. I attribute that to two things:

1. My guildmates, with whom I do dungeons. Quality people, they know what they’re doing with their skills, we’re talking in TS3 while fighting, and we get it done without a wipe. I don’t pug.
2. My own personal build and abilities. Here’s what I’m running currently, both in dungeons and out:
1-5 Rifle
6 Prayer to Dwayna
7 Flamethrower
8 Throw Mine
9 Elixir B
10 Supply Drop

Rifle gives you a knockback and a snare.
Flamethrower gives you a knockback, projectile reflect, and fire combo field.
Throw Mine gives you a knockback and blast finisher.
Elixir B buffs your party and yourself during the fight.
Flamethrower’s fire field also works with the blast finishers from Throw Mine (and it’s toolbelt skill) to apply several stacks of might to your party before a pull (provided they stand on you). Drink an Elixir B just after that to add another stack to yourself.

I generally stack Power and Precision, and haven’t needed much Toughness or Vitality because I rarely get hit. Know when to dodge (seeing target of target would be helpful here), and how to snare/knockback with your various abilities, and you should be good to go. Use line of sight tactics against ranged mobs. Your knockbacks also act as an interrupt in many cases.

I’m sure there are many other character builds that have good control, and some healing. I’d mess around with those a bit. Maybe if what I wrote here isn’t your style, add some Toughness or Vitality. I hope you find something that suits you, because a good engineer is really great to see in action.

Trading Post underpricing

in Players Helping Players

I hate that people are selling items for so cheap on TP. I can hardly make any money there thanks to low-ballers. They could sell their items for the same price at a shop but go to the TP. That just does not make any sense to me. Is there any chance that the minimum amount to sell items for goes up? Or am I stuck with getting next to nothing for most of the items I sell?

If you’re looking to make a bunch of money right now, you’re doing it wrong. I’m spending most of my money buying various underpriced items, to resell once the market stabilizes. It’s so saturated right now, that attempting to make a profit on margins is just about useless. For instance, I bought lots of gems at just over their vendor value a while back. I’m not sure what their price is right now (haven’t played in a few days due to lightning one-shotting my computer), but I’ve put a bet on the price going up in the future. It may not be tomorrow or next week, but they should turn a good profit eventually. The only thing I’ve sold so far was a pretty darn good 2hand sword, and that was just to get some seed money to start buying.

TLDR – Now is not the time to be profiting. Now is the time to be buying in anticipation of profit later.

My favorite is my warrior. I have 2 builds that do this. One is the classic charge / great sword burst (which can do 30k damage in one shot easy).

The next is sword / axe bleed / crit. Charge, axe WW move, then my F1 sword move. Most everything is dead by then.

My warrior has 72% crit and 3300~ power.

Let’s not even go into the thief cheese. we all know about that.

I can do it on my mesmer. Necro, Sometimes on my engineer.

Seriously the PvP in this game is too much of an instant kill / insta gib / one shot fight. There is no balance… no longevity in battle.

Ever seen three engineers drop down 12 turrets? No point in fighting that battle. Or any fight with 2 + theif or 2 + warrior. good luck.

Welp.. that’s it for me. That was quick. Guess I’ll wait for the next PvP game.. maybe it will have battles that last longer than 2 burst moves.

I’m an engineer. If your warrior gets close enough to touch me, that’s my own fault and I deserve to be slaughtered.

But we don’t need to worry about that, since you won’t touch me.

My turret is so much better at this game than I am.

I heard second (or third) hand that fishing will be coming at some point.

My only source for this is that I read a post somewhere else in these forums where one person claimed to have saw an interview or something where Anet said we’d have fishing sometime after launch, and another person agreed and said they read it somewhere.

I’d like to see a fishing skill.
