What did you name your Revenant?

Dakra Riftreaver is my Charr Revenant.

Originally named Dakra Furyflash, she is a Warrior who was sent to Maguuma on behalf of the High Legions, her warband were slowly killed off after the airship crash by Mordrem. She reached out for a higher power to aid her, and so the legends of the mists responded, aiding her survival. She now seeks to fufill her vendetta against Mordremoth. Her hobbies include mass genocide and knitting.

Her name is a reference to something. Anybody who can guess it gets a hug. Hint: Her weapon of choice is a sword.

Most Fun Class

Revenant is very simple to play. Since the New-Player Experience mechanics went into the game, ArenaNet has been trying to idiot-proof the game, and the Revenant reflects that, so if you want a profession that even a child could grasp, Revenant. It also has a nice balance between survivability and offensive power depending on what Legends you pick.

Warrior is probably the easiest of the professions to play, which also means its one of the most boring professions to play, in my opinion. It can have great survivability as it shares the highest base health points in the game with Necromancer, and pre-Heart of Thorns, it sat at the top of all professions in terms of damage output, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets overtaken by Necromancer in Heart of Thorns for damage.

Ranger is pretty simple to understand. Some of the pet mechanics are a bit -bleh in my opinion because the AI can sometimes freak out, for example, on a few occasions ive caught my pet not attacking things at all or attacking, then walking away, etc. It can have pretty good damage output, but its a bit squishy if you don’t pick certain traits/utilities. I always run the Signet of Stone utility skill on my Ranger, so if anything gets too heated, I can negate all damage for a few seconds.

Thief isn’t too complex really, but it does have a really high skill-roof if you want to get really good at it. You can play it just by button-mashing, or if you really take the time to chain together a comprehensive rotation, it can output a ton of damage. In terms of survivability, it seems quite squishy, but between Stealth and Evasion, it can avoid quite a lot of damage, and with it’s new elite specialization, Daredevil, it can a lot of damage reduction depending on what traits and gear you use.

Mesmer is quite a complex class to play, but it can be one of the most rewarding due to it’s unique mechanics, and desirability in groups due to it’s big pool of utility skills. It can be set up to do a variety of things, especially with it’s elite specialisation, Chronomancer. However, It’s a little bit squishy unless you’re hiding behind Illusions or know how to use it’s damage mitigation abilities effectively.

Necromancer is my personal choice of profession. Personally, I find it quite simplistic to play, since it was the first one I picked up at launch, but some people say they find it complex due to knowing when to shift into Death Shroud form, or if they’re running minion builds, sometimes people say they find knowing how to use the minions complex. Its really just a profession that comes naturally to some people, and not so naturally to others. In terms of survivability, its often regarded as one of the tankiest professions in the game, due to Death Shroud effectively doubling it’s health, and it’s naturally high base health. In terms of damage, it can do quite a lot of damage with certain utility skills, namely Well Skills. With it’s Elite Specialization, The Reaper, it’s damage increases many times over, meaning it can out-DPS quite a few other professions.

Why no Corruption builds?

in Revenant

Posted by: Argon.1563

Argon.1563

Corruption is a viable line on both Condi and Power builds, but because it leans slightly more towards Condi, when people are making their Power builds, it tends to get dropped for Herald to keep Invocation and Devastation, so considering Power builds are more popular, Corruption just gets kicked to the wayside.

Considering my Revenant doesn’t have Herald yet, im going to run Corruption until I can get Herald.

What I find interesting, is that before HoT, there were at least 5 armour sets per weight that were datamined, and only 3 of those sets have turned up. Odd.

Considering HoT is more of a rolling thing with the new legendaries coming in instalments, it makes me wonder, will those extra armour sets turn up in later updates for HoT-buyers. Possibly along with new zones even? There is a little void above rata summ with no zone, so who knows.

Revenant in year 1325? (May contain Spoilers)

in Revenant

Posted by: Argon.1563

Argon.1563

You need to make a distinction between game mechanics, and what is happening in the actual story. As we all know, the majority of Revenants are people who have already learned another profession, and are converting, so in 1325, your character is a different profession when seen in the story, but mechanically, they are a Revenant, because obviously its not possible to swap professions on a in-game mechanical basis.

For example, my character was originally a Warrior and became a soldier who went to Orr in 1325AE to battle against The Risen and Zhaitan. She kept this role for a few years before being sent to Maguuma to face Mordremoth in 1328AE, where she acquired the ability to become a Revenant.

For example, currently my Guardian is 28 years old as a character. If I decide to play my personal story, is he magically 25 again via some kind of time travel? No. Its just a part of the story that takes place at a different time. A prequel if you will.

400 points for a full elite spec.
10 points per skill challenge in Maguuma
40 challenges.
4 maps. 10 challenges per map.

Considering most maps have 7 to 9 hero challenges per map in the base game, this really isn’t going out of your way for anything. If ArenaNet just decided to drop 4 new maps in, that added 40 challenges into the game, nobody would think anything of it. Great, new content, right? But as soon as you connect it to a spec system, it spawns a proverbial storm. Its odd.

In all honesty, im glad this playwall is here, so when somebody sees an elite spec, they know it really is elite. When im dancing around with my giant scythe on Reaper, I want people to know that I had to beat up a lot of plant-people for that title.

Bring on the jungle. My blade awaits.

What happens if the Pale Tree dies?

in Lore

Posted by: Argon.1563

Argon.1563

The Pale Tree is the one who provides resistance from Mordremoth’s corruption to those who are still connected to her via The Dream, so if she dies, it will be much harder for Sylvari to resist that corruption. and yes, no more Sylvari will awaken if she dies, unless this magical second tree hiding somewhere to the east is actually a thing.

Her Avatar is simply a representation of her, so people can interact with her more easily. If the tree itself is damaged, then this is reflected on the avatar, but not the other way around, since its essentially just a puppet.

Neutral Revenant Skills

I agree. Revenant feels really limited in it’s build diversity, and its really predictable in PvP, because you’ll always know what its running.

I also specifically want the ability to swap skills on Revenant just to get rid of Pain Absorption on Mallyx. Its a useless skill that does nothing. Everybody runs their own condi cleanse, no matter what game type you’re in, and the horribly long cast time on it means everybody can cleansed before you can pull condis from allies to yourself. The tooltip might as well say “No effect.”

Argon.1563

So far, ive decided ill avoid Druid, because im not interested healing or it’s Death Shroud 2.0 mechanics. The utilities are about as boring as the base Ranger’s utilities as well.

Im quite fond of Auramancer builds on Elementalist, so ill probably look at Tempest, but having to replace Air, Water or Earth with Tempest will be annoying, since all 3 of those Specs are vital to the Auramancer build. Ill probably just drop Water and go for Tempest, since my team can support themselves. Im not their mother.

Im in the very small camp of people who dislike Reaper, so I might avoid it on my Necromancer. I dislike Greatsword, I dislike the utilities, I dislike the traits. I only like the Shroud Knight, and that is it. Not sure if its worth taking a whole Spec just for 1 tiny bit that I like.

I was (past tense) going to avoid Berserker as well, because playing it in the BWE made me gag a little bit, but supposedly, they’ve fixed the Berserk function so it’s not so clunky and nasty to use, so if thats sorted itself out, ill give Berserker a second chance.

Otherwise, I think ill be using all the other elite specs. They add a lot of nice things to the other professions.

Bypp sounds realistic for a male Asuran’s name. Most male Asuran’s names have only one syllable, and end in a consonant, which Bypp does. It even has the trendy double-consonant which is popular in Asuran names.

Play which ever one you want. The only confirmed racial difference we’ll see in HoT is the Sylvari being able to hear Mordremoth. Otherwise, racial and professional differences will likely just be minor lore tidbits, NPC’s dialogue when reacting to your characters, and easter eggs.

Personally, im going to be playing a Charr, because when I was playing Sylvari in the betas, when ever Mordremoth started talking, I didn’t really like it because theres something about his voice that my ears don’t quite agree with, and is quite uncomfortable to listen to. The only comparison I can think of is when somebody scratches a chalk board with their nails. It doesn’t hurt your ears, but it makes them “cringe” and makes them feel unpleasant. Not sure if thats the right word to describe it.

No Mordremoth voice for me.

Where is the suicide in the GW franchise?

Argon.1563

Because you are pact commander so by lore you would care.

I find it disturbing that your solution to people with ptsd is to slap them.

I feel dissatisfied with the narrative writing because very little is expressed beyond the typical range of emotions.

The voice for the revenant stances is superior to most of the characters we meet.

It’s as if everyone we meet is a stalwart hero except in instances where the player character is supposed to act.

Don’t take my posts out of context. I never said my attitude towards people with PTSD is to slap them, I meant it as in “slapping it on them” as in giving them that label as characters. I don’t expect to have to speak to people on a forum with the literal accuracy I would address children with.

Like dsslive said, the pact commander isn’t going to gather round a table with Trehearne and the pact officers to figure out where to build a mental health clinic. Its not the commander’s place. Its his duty to figure out how to kill dragons in the most efficient way possible.

and besides, since my pact commander is a Charr, he won’t be handing out boxes of tissues and offering out hugs. He’ll tell them to get onto Primus or farming duty, where unable soldiers can be useful without being dead weight on the battlefield.

Where is the suicide in the GW franchise?

in Lore

Argon.1563

So you feel dissatisfied with the narrative of this game because not enough characters kill themselves? Thats just a little bit worrying in all honesty.

This is an online game. Not a social narrative. ArenaNet is progressive in the content that they make as a way to push more representation within games, as they have done with female protagonists, homosexual characters and disabled characters within the franchise, however, if ArenaNet was seen to be encouraging suicide, it would not only damage their reputation, but also annoy half the playerbase, since Eir collectively kittened off a chunk of us with her whining about how she was going to kill herself.

There are obviously a lot of dark themes in this game, such as racism, terrorism and genocide, but because of how death is used in creating narrative, be it written story, film, TV show or video game, it has to have impact, and having loads of characters killing themselves left, right and centre isn’t going to have an impact unless its built up, which I doubt ArenaNet wants to go to the effort of doing.

When I turn on the television in the morning, and I see on the news that somebody has killed themselves, I don’t shed a tear for them. I didn’t know them. Life goes on, so why would I care about groups of nameless pact soldiers killing themselves due to PTSD?

If a character we care about tries to kill themself, then it might be sad and have an impact, but slapping depression random pact soldiers just for a bit of edgy realism and expecting the player to care isn’t going to add anything to the game.

[Reaper] Sigil of Ice?

Argon.1563

Thoughts on Sigil of Ice? Could this Elite Spec bring this sigil into the light of day? (Hopefully not into direct light though, so it doesn’t melt.)

Considering the Decimate Defences trait will give you +50% crit chance against enemies with 25 stacks of Vuln, I don’t really need the Sigil of Accuracy I use on my Focus any more (It was the default sigil, and I never changed it. Im aware its not “optimal”.), is Sigil of Ice an option?

I don’t really like the greatsword, but I quite like the synergy between Chilling Nova, Decimate Defences and Bitter Chill to stack up the vulnerability for crit chance, so I don’t get a lot of chill going out, unless im using my Focus and things such as Chilled To The Bone on my bar.

Opinions? I hadn’t figured this build out in the previous BWE, so its untested. Has anybody else tried Sigil of Ice on Reaper?…Or on anything else for that matter? Ive never actually used a sigil of ice on anything, ever.

I don’t ever notice the clipping myself, but in recent times, the last few things that have cropped up have been “charr inclusive” with tail-holes, etc. And That_Shaman has dug up 1 or 2 charr armour sets that will (probably) come in HoT that have tail-holes and holes for the horns to go through.

I think ArenaNet may have told their art team to pull their finger out for HoT, because the last thing they need is the hundreds of thousands of Charr players submitting reviews everywhere saying its a graphical wreck.

No. I hated the heroes system in GW1. It absolutely destroyed the playerbase.

“Oh guys, who wants to go for an elite mission? DoA? Urgoz?”
“Just use your heroes and solo it.”

“Hey guys, can I get some help with this mission? Its really hard.”
“Just use your heroes and solo it.”

The heroes system reduced the GW1 playerbase to a bunch of lazy, anti-social wrecks. It made everybody start shying away from group play and completely destroyed the 1 purpose a massively muliplayer game is meant to fufill: Playing with other people.

The heroes system is actually the reason I quit GW1, because nobody wanted to play with me any more. When ever I asked for help, or invited anyone to any content, I got rejected, being told to just use my heroes.

Renewable Energy

in Lore

Posted by: Argon.1563

Argon.1563

Although ArenaNet goes out of their way to explain many of the utilities in-game that would otherwise break the 4th wall, like Waypoints, I think respawning ore nodes are literally just a game mechanic. I don’t think they’re magical/misty at all.

Although we don’t know how large Tyria as a planet is in relation to our own, its easy to say that if the Tyrian planet has anywhere near the amount of naturally occurring metal, they haven’t scratched the surface of those resources. Theres still enough to last thousands of years, so they likely have no reason to worry about renewable energy, as such as green energy, which a lot of Asurans and some Charr study. Metallurgy in Tyria is actually really privative still, since only a handful of alloys have been discovered, and they’ve only just discovered Cinnabar and Mercury in recent years.

Dragon’s do consume magic, yes, but when they go back to sleep, that magic is slowly seeped out of their bodies and rejuvenates the world, so that magic is never “destroyed”. It just goes round in a big cycle.

The topic of magic from The Mists is ambiguous at best. There are obviously professions that utilize Mist energies, such as the Ritualists and Revenants, but its unclear if this is magic, of if its something else, so then it sparks the debate: If the dragons did manage to eat all the magic in the world, and professions like Elementalists, Necromancers, Guardians, etc, were left unable to cast magikittenil the dragons sleep, and the magic seeps back out, could Revenants and Ritualists still go on?

The Mists clearly does contain magic, because its The Mists. Its quite explicit that it contains everything there ever was, never was, will be and won’t be, which likely includes magic, and the fact magic users can still cast magic while inside The Mists as evidenced in Fractals and other planes of The Mists indicates that magic does exist there, however, there seems to be no way to transport magic from The Mists into Tyria, otherwise Asurans, who guzzle magic like nobody’s business, would’ve found a way to do it by now, unless it comes up in a later update.

Hopefully HoT will reveal more information about the matter when its explained to us how Revenant’s can do the things they do. Thinking about The Mists makes my head hurt.

Scrapper - Really bad name

in Lore

Posted by: Argon.1563

Argon.1563

Although the term “Scrapper” can be subjective in meaning to the other races, it is categorically negative to the Charr…or is it? I think I have a way it could be seen as a good title to be proud of.

Its said the Scrapper uses that name for the specialization as a “badge of honor”, which is probably related to the fact the specialization comes from Engineers salvaging the fact fleet to make Gyros and other weaponry.

Many of the Charr in the fleet aren’t pact soldiers. A lot are Legion Charr who Smodur The Unflinching pledged as his way of aiding the movement against Mordremoth. Considering many of those Charr died in the fleet crash, theres bound to be more than a few who are now Gladiums or their Warband size has been greatly dimished, with the Centurions/Legionnaires among them placing the survivors on Scrapper Duty to build up supplies and weaponry. Considering Charr are a resourceful bunch, they’ve probably shrugged it off and got to work on making useful things from the wreckage.

If I went down in an airship crash, lived it, had the strength to bottle up half my warband being dead, and still had it in me to salvage materials as a “scrapper”, while fending off plant-monsters, i’d be happy to see that as a “badge of honor”.

Not necessarily a HoT thing, but if this suggestion was ever taken on board, it would probably come after HoT, or with HoT, so I think ill put it in here.

I was flicking through old screenshots I got back at launch, and I noticed a character in the background of one of the shots, with a strange outfit on, and after a bit of research, I found it was one of the old town clothing sets that were removed in 2013, so I looked up the rest of them, and some of those outfits are very nice.

Is there any possibility these will return as purchasable outfits/skins in the gemstore? I think its an awful shame some of those skins that could be re-made into outfits are just unused models sat in the game code being unused.

My Revenant will obviously be a Revenant when HoT launches, because profession changing is mechanically impossible in this game, so ill be roleplaying her as a Warrior until we get the lore details on how one becomes a Revenant, then I will be roleplaying her a Revenant. Why am I not worried about the fact she mechanically will be a Revenant before we find Rytlock in HoT – Imagination~

How will I get round her being a Revenant in the Personal Story when I do it with her? Well, according to her backstory, she was a Warrior before she became a Revenant, and the personal story takes place before the time she transitions from Warrior to Revenant, therefore ill roleplay her as a Warrior when I do the personal story. Simples.

ArenaNet doesn’t need to make mechanical elements for every single lore detail, because they assume their players are human, and humans generally have the power of imagination.

Are there cosmetic skins associated with this as a reward? I always like a Charr in a sharp uniform.

Charr Farmers

Charr farmers can be many things. They may be Charr who weren’t good enough at combat in the Fahrar to be soldiers, therefore placed as farmers, elderly, retired soldiers, or Charr soldiers who are injured and are working as farmers while they recover, however, injured Charr soldiers can also be placed as Primuses or Quaestors while they heal, so its not an exclusive role.

All Charr (except free agents), are in warbands. Otherwise, they are gladiums. This means there are warbands who specialize in everything. There are warbands of merchants, miners, quaestors, farmers, smelters, prison wardens, engineers, armourers, whatever role that would potentially aid the legions, there is a warband for it.

Gladiums normally do nothing, because being in a warband is just how Charr society functions. If you have no warband, then you are a nobody. The issue is with this, finding a second warband if your Fahrar-made warband kicks them out, or they die is very hard, because you have to fit in with a group of people who have been together since cubhood, which is very difficult in itself, and its difficult finding a warband who will accept new recruits. Its particularly hard if the warband has died, and they’re the sole survivor, because it raises the question if they abandoned their old warband to let them die, which is basically the biggest no-no in Charr society. Its more honourable to die trying to save your warband than leaving them to die in order to save yourself.

That leads me to another question: do gladium even receive assignments from the legions? With the exception of Rox, who seems to be an unusual case, every one I can think of we only see loitering, trying to join a new warband, or pursuing personal objectives.

Gladium are out-of-the-loop of regular legion activity. Some of the gladiums are punished for whatever they did to become gladiums, such as Vere The Coward, who’s punishment is to tell the story of how he abandoned his warband to anybody he meets, however, Gladium who attempt to apply to join another warband may be sympathised with, so officers such as Legionnaires, Centurions or Tribunes may make arrangements to help a Gladium find a new warband.

Rox’s situation isn’t unique, but is rather rare. She’s described as a “solo agent”, which means she still acts under the legions as a soldier, but she doesn’t have a warband. The reason she has this status is because she applied to The Stone Warband, and she was asked to complete a series of tasks to prove she is worthy to join the warband, however, part of these tasks was to do them alone, hence why she is a free agent.

Rox isn’t a free agent in the present day however. Her final task was to kill Scarlet Briar, however, she chose to save Braham who needed help at the time, and the Player Character beat her to the kill, meaning she was refused from the Stone Warband and chose not to re-apply, ignoring any further summons from Rytlock Brimstone she received in the mail. She currently sits as a Gladium, shes had no further interaction with the legions since then.

Although Rox is the only free agent Charr to date, I imagine it can be given to certain other Charr also, for example, I imagine certain Charr who do specific assassination jobs might be free agents, because a team can sometimes get in the may more of such a job than if they were alone, however, most Charr agree that a warband is the optimal situation, which is why free agents are very rare.

Considering that bass guitar in the gem store is clearly Charr-made:
