Lohengrin, guardian =]
PvP: Players vs Pets
Oh! Now I understand!!
Bunkers would be the optimal “learning build”, but I don’t think the guardian version is so forgiving as the elementalist.
That said, you should go for the zerker build first, imo. But since you are starting the guardian now, I suggest using soldier’s/cleric amulet till you are familiar with the hotkeys, skills and combos.
I particullary, like to run this one:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQJARSlUgiDnGyNEf4ERli4dPMFaMjXPgoDbIA;ToAg0Cvo4ywlgLLXOukctAZYB
Not so optimal for team fights, but I like to roam and take lone targets
If you’ve ever played a BS thief, this build works similar.
You first start off with Ring of Warding + Judge’s Intervention (you need to be fast on this one). Then you’ll be teleported to your target, with the ring surrounding you. Most people try to dodge, in vain (the ring knock them back).Switch to greatsword (don’t forget to tap F1) and start dishing some nasty damage (Symbol of Wrath + Whirling Wrath). If you use Binding Blade, don’t pull your target right away. Wait till they try a heal or if they somehow managed to create a gap between you.
I could explain more, but assuming you are beggining now, I think you’ll get the idea, once you have played it.
Ps: Using soldier’s/cleric’s you’ll probably won’t kill so fast, but it’s a good method to get used to your skills.

It’s WvWvW, who cares…
Mesmers aren’t OP, imo. They are just cheap against any melee spec.
You people never learn, eeh?
“Omg, halloween skins are soooo RNG! I’ll never buy keys again!”
5 months later…
“Omg, fused skins are soooo RNG! I’ll never buy keys again!”
“When it’s ready”
They don’t really need to lower the ranks. What they need to do, if there’s any truth in their “cosmetic only” business, is simply add more cosmetics.
You’ll see that some in-game skins are missing in the mist. For instance, we can’t have the foefire’s / elementalist conjured weapons / mesmer phantasm weapons / lengendaries (come on Anet!) / etc series. And that’s talking about weapons only, maybe there’s even armor sets in PVE that we can’t have in PVP.
On top of that, they can add exclusive finishers, boosters and especially different animations (everyone but asuras have the same animation for every weapon), in their gem store.
1. Ring of Warding
- “It’s rap**** time!” or "You are all mine, for five whole seconds "
2. Judge Intervention
- Combo with Ring of Warding: “Surprise surprise!!”
- Combo with Banish: like Judge Dredd would say " I am…THE LAW!!"
3. Smite Condition
- “ROAR! ASOMAL SMASH LITTLE MAN!”
(edited by Asomal.6453)
Would you like dual shield too? Or even better, dual rifle. Then we can get some AK47 skin and a rambo outfit…
I love every other class too. What i dont understand is what makes thief so strong? Rock paper scissors, everyone is op thus no one is. everything has a legitimate counter. a good gaurd will always beat a thief for instance but i’m straying off subject.
Basically the frontload damage. Despite, GC Guardian >> GC Thief. Just try it, and you’ll see how lackluster the thief is in everything but mobility.
What’s really odd is that even the famous BS combo doesn’t seem so strong. But Anet catters for the newbies, it seems. Hell, some thieves still run D/D in hotjoin! The freaking D/D!! How does anyone still dies to it so freaking bad?
This update also shows why PVP got so little from Feb’s and March update
Anyway, I might give it a try, since we can get the “super” serie skins for PVP (tough be prepared to grind your kitten if you want all of them).
More trolls please… I’m not sure about the actual attack speed but SB attacks much faster than sword and give bleedings on side-/backhits… The DMG is completely fine..vAnd taking sword for more dmg is pretty stupid since every1 takes it for the evades… Go axe/torch for dmg. firefield + axe 2 and afterwards autoattack melts everything. .
4 month old post bro, chill…
I’m a veteran pvp player but I mainly do pve/wvw now since coming from gw1, which had the best PvP game in MMOs in my opinion, I was pretty bummed out that gw2 did not live up to its structure PvP legacy. I welcome this change to get some new blood into the game mode, I don’t care if it’s just a temporary thing with the laurels, new blood is new blood. Let the PvErs have their rewards to give them incentive to at least try something new and bring life back to a dying game mode. Enough of this elitist BS. Its what killed GW1’s PvP in the first place.
Just my 2 cents.
Problem is, they’ll never have their reward alone. They must be carried to the victory in order to do so (the newbies in PVP). Some doesn’t even try to accomplish it, they just want their laurels. Now, I don’t have any problem with this reward addition in PVP, but you can’t really expect a veteran solo queuer to carry 4 -r20 lowbies against a r30+ team, or even a premade.
1. Blurred Frenzy, most OP skill I have ever seen. 2 seconds of invulnerability on a 10 second cooldown, wtf? What other class has 2 seconds of invulnerability on a 10s cooldown? I’m not even considering the extra burst.
2. Ilusionary Leap, while technically not a stun break can basically nullify the effects of immobilize or snare or freeze. On a 12 second cooldown. Both are hilariously easy to avoid. L2 kitten ue.
Bet you play one of them :^)
If not, why don’t you try to avoid them as a warrior? Go on
Silly Geff. Nobody is denying both are over the top:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/sPvP-Class-Tier-List
But Eles are simply better than Mesmers.
T1: kick banner warrior and minion necro, turret engies
T2:engi, mesmer, thief, guardian, ranger
worst tier: eledeal with it
Fixed.
What we all should be playing tier: Elementalist
Sissy’s tier: Ranger & Mesmer
Boring tier: Guardian
Men’s tier: Necromancer, Engineer & Thief
Free-Kill tier: Warrior
buffed? you mean nerfed
You didn’t know? Thieves are so overpowered that even their nerfs are buffs!
“What doesn’t buff you, makes you stronger.”
Ah the joy of patchday
the fact they did nothing to counterbalance this is hilarious, like maybe the boon hate thing they talked about.
I think Karl is doing balance based on class description instead of the actual game
.
“Boon hate? We actually meant burst hate! Sorry If we mispelled.”
Milking from the dead cow,I see…
There no much sense on why the PvE crowd gets everything for free while the already small PVP community have to pay for something…
that would be true if mesmer did not have so much damage, if you sPvP or WvW, pay attention and you will notice you can fight most classes normally, tank for a little, have a fun time, and then a mesmer comes and melts all of your hp..
Well, if Google says, then we have no doubt about that…
With a zerker amulet my base health on my mesmer (what I was playing at the time) is around 15k. Do you think it is fair a thief can 8k BS 5k Steal and 2k lightning strike proc to me in under a second? Not to mention I’m stunned by this by basilisk vennom. Also it is not a l2 kitten ue, I easily get out of basilisk venom when not instantly killed but its kinda hard to get away when 2 skills that take under a second to cast kill you.
Yup, because they can do the same to you.
And thieves does not simply “insta gib” anyone, but glass cannons. Or are you telling me you can easily kill bunker eles/bm~trap rangers/bunker guardians/ phantams mesmers?
You clearly havent played thief enough or at all to understand how to manuver a zerg. Btw it is a nerf considering you could hit 4ks everytime you cloaked so you cloak on the same guy twice hes either at half or popped his heal and then you havent even been noticed yet
3W I asssume? In PvP, C&D barely hits 2k on critical, on a non glass cannon target :^T
Anyway, unless someone is playing D/D for condition DB build, D/P is way superior when it comes to flexibility (stealth whenever + smoke field + interrupt, GG).
Stealth is already the most OP mechanic in the game. Thank god summons and pets get the aggro back.
Any monkey is able to engage 1 vs 5 and escape with his thief or mesmer nowadays, don’t ask to make this 1 vs 100, thanks.
Pets are the most OP mechanic in the game (except for necro minions, these suck). It’s completly fire and forget (plus, it auto target anyone coming out of stealth). At least with a stealth thief, you know what to expect: he’ll either attack you or drop out of stealth after 3 seconds. Pets in the otherhand, it’s a constant 1xN opponents.
You’d expect a trade off: if the pets are strong, their master is weak and vice-versa. But nah…
Even if the thief is not the best support or dpser out there, who cares again? There’s no end game here, but for some reason people need to finish the content in the minimun time possible, even if that means rejecting any player that doesn’t play a zerker warrior/support guardian. Grind for the grinders, I guess…
“We need dem goldz to buy our legendariez, that are no different from our exotics! Why? Coz i need to show my e -peepee off in Lions Arch!
I can’t stand losing 5 mins of my life, coz mr. thief there can’t hit as hard as my 100b!”
Sigh…No wonder I have stopped playing PVE since Cursed Shores
Thank you for showing that you have not the slightest clue about Combofinishers. I already explained it to you once in another thread but here we go again!
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combo
Dark field:
Blast finishers only apply blindness which is useless against bosses.Smoke:
Stealth, has its use to get past trash, usefullness dimishes at boss fights.Water:
Healing at blast finishers and with that finally a usefull field again. So congratulation out of 9 possible combofields, 2 dont suck kitten
Projectile and leap finisher often dont offer anything for your team either and are rather there for your team to apply passive some stuff. Again its not worth to focus on these tiny stuff you can apply with that.
tl;dr
Except 2 fields, blast in combofields suck and are mainly meant for your team to apply passive some stuff and dont care about its effect.
Maybe if you play Trash Wars 2 and enjoy the fight against trash mobs and go afk at the boss fight, you might find combofields and blinds and weakness usefull.
Smoke + Blast = 5 seconds regeneration, if traited.
And don’t forget the most powerful support skill we have: Shadow Refuge
It heals + 5 seconds regen (traited) + dark combo field + physical projectile finisher (life leech) = GG everyone using ranged attack in the field is now full HP again.
You guys aren’t listening, the PvE content is the problem not thieves. It’s so mind numbingly easy that there is no need for anything but dps. I don’t know how else to explain it.
Precisely. Imo, bring back the BWE1 difficult, so those almighty melee dpsers will feel it on their skins
This next patch will not be a magical patch. It will have a few PvP balances, and leaderboards will be visible within a week. That’s about it.
I think players started leaving last month with the last patch failing expectations. It was pretty much the last straw to an already dying community…
-“Fixed underwater skills tooltips for every profession”
-“Leaderboard added”
:^T
Lol, PVE folks always make me laugh. “You cant be in our party coz ur a thief!1”. Yeah, like any content in this game is hard enough to not be done by an entire group of the same class.
It serious amuses me, that some people still have this vision from past games (aka, game where you have the holybullkittenrinity). It’s just sad, really.
Now, about the thief: there’s no way it’s not viable. It doesn’t have “worse healing” nor “less support”/“tanking ability”. It all depends on how you build it. Just to give some examples:
Worse Healing:
- For yourself
Signet of Malice + Healing Food + Black Powder (x/P build). You’ll barely take any damage from non bosses mobs and even if you do, you’ll heal all the way through it (malice OP!1)
For group:
Venom Shared Heal ooooor you can always combo Black Powder + Cluster Bomb for AoE invi (+Regeneration traited). Plus, you have acess to Shadow Refuge, which is neat to revive your partners.
-Less support
Caltrops (aoe cripple)/ Smoke Screen / Shadow Refuge / Blinding Powder/ Black Powder (strongest skill against non boss mobs, imo) + the already mentioned venom sharer build, for your venoms.
-No tanking ability
Just build for toughness/blinding and heal. You can easily be the “tanker” of your party.
I could go on and try to come with more examples, but i’m not in the mood to it. Anyway, I think you’ve got the idea…
tl;dr
People being ignorant when it comes to chose classes for PVE, like it matters, lol.
wait a minute! That flesh golem doesn’t work for ANet!
He is the one balancing the PVP
This is not exclusive to ranger’s pets, but everyone, as mesmers, thieves…Horray for cheap PVE mechanics in PVP \o/
Sorry about wrong month, but it’s true. Revamped zones? You mean Orr right? So they fixed some events and added some icons on minimap, big revamp. (and some got bugged, excepted, Lyssa when i stopped playing)
Changed dungeon rewards policy (used to be hella grindy), fixed bugged events/skill points (oh the good 3 weeks I have waited to get the one in Orr), Halloween + Cursed Shore(new map,new dungeon, new items) + Christmas + this one running now events (dunno the name, haven’t played PVE since last year), yadda yadda…
This to avoid talking about OBVIOUS balance issue ( like eles being gods and ruining the meta) and OBVIOUSLY GAMEBREAKING ISSUES whose required months to be fixed ( svanir runes bug, mace bug, tournament chests on server switching, mesmer’s perma stealth, RTL not being affected by movement impairing effects if not immo, and so on)
Don’t forget eles autorevive tornado bug and immortal rangers pets, healing for all eternity (that haven’t been fixed yet).
I wish they at least made Shadow Trap work as a teleport instead of a regular shadowstep.
I was trying it out a while back after they updated the behavior, hoping that it might actually be useful now, but nope, still not usable at all for hopping between points due to irregular terrain.
I think it used to work as a teleport, back on the launch’s days (and before the changes). I remember teleporting across Khylo, from Mansion to the Windmill. Could have been bugged, though…
I like this idea, but I don’t think it’s possible to implement in such a bloody way. Like someone said above, it’s PEGI 12.
However, another interesting aspect from this kinda of cosmetic, would be skills animation. Just take a look at asuras vs other races. All their animations are unique, while everyone else is the same. Would be great to have diferent animations per race or even new animations for the same skill, but bought in the gem store.
I think people who play pvp just to abuse these mechanics are lame and wasting everyone’s time, and perhaps a large chunk of the reason S PvP has been so unpopular since 3 months after release and onward.
People abuse these mechanics because the game is way too forgiving and allow them to. Got caugth in a bad position or didn’t dodge on time? Doesn’t matter, since you have 50 out of the jail cards. Anyway, I think the root of the problem is deeper, it’s the old Melee x Ranged issue. No wonder playing a warrior is a hard time when everyone can kite you and even if you manage to succesfully reach your enemy, they can easily disengage/get away from you, while still dishing some nasty damage.
And since you mentioned maps, why is the terrain blocking/miss “bug” not fixed yet? Geez, 6 months suffering from that kitten.
(edited by Asomal.6453)
huehuehue cry thieves cry! hopefully there’ll be a few more nerfs coming after this.
i’d love to see the tears if thieves were rendered as trashy as rangers, necros and engis but alas i don’t think it’ll happen. i’ll just content myself with the bitter tears of reduced OPness.

LOL, post of the year!!
When I picked my thief on the betas, I thought at first glance, that Haste would buff my speed for 4 seconds. Now, that would be really interesting for today, insofar as our “punishment” for using it, is greater than Frenzy and Zephir’s. Don’t get me wrong, 50% more damage and not being able to heal is a big deal, but that’s for the mean time you are using it. While Haste burns our endurance and it takes some time to fully recover it.
Now, about the speed, I think the same as RTL would be great, since they want the thief to be more mobile (hence the last SOTG).
daze+ burst + stealth +evade on weapon skil -no
atm
Guess I forgot to mention PW evade. In any case, removing the evade from it would make it only fairer. After all, Infiltrator’s Strike is there, if you need to disengage.
regarding body shot -blast finisher, no
blast is aoe stealth / aoe might / aoe regeneration
this would make P/D thieves to change for P/P , and hey i don’t need C&D to stealth anymore , i drop smoke field 6 initiative, i use body shot (1 initiative) – sneak attack …2 hits , smoke field /body shot.
you just need to pick 3 out of those : infusion of shadows /patience/ initial strike /infiltrator signet /quick recovery , to become real imortal
About the aoe concern, SB also has a blast finisher. So it doesn’t seem like game break change. The point is, this spec wouldn’t be cheap (in terms of initiative). Black Powder alone costs 6 initiatives and Body Shot 3. If we, lets say, change Body Shot to 4~5, you’d spend 10~11, just to stealth, leaving you with 4~5 (if traited). 2~3 less than the usual HS+BP combo (against 5 from C&D), but hey, it’s ranged!
(edited by Asomal.6453)
If S/D and S/P have their third abilities swapped?
S/P used to be popular, back at the launch’s days. However, we barely see anyone running this setup today. Despite being a decent weapon setup, S/P doesn’t offer our best defensive mechanic: stealth.
And neither does P/P! Perhaps that’s the main reason those are not considerable viable in the competitive scene, unlike D/P, S/D, D/D and even P/D (it’s farly good, but since Eles / Guardians and Rangers are soo good at removing conditions, it’s not optimal for taking those down. Still decent against all the rest).
And how do we “fix” it or at least, make some change to bring these specs on par with the others? I came with an idea, may not be the best, but imo, it would do wonders for P/P and S/P users.
It’s very simple: we kill the batman swap Flanking Strike with Pistol Whip!
“BUT HOW WOULD IT FIX ANYTHING YOU MORON?”
Now now, of course that wouldn’t be everything! Flaking Strike is in need of a small adjustment.
“Evade and stab your foe in the back twice. First strike removes 1 boon.”
The first strike is superb, and the boon removal even more! But what’s the point of the second strike? It does as much damage as the sword auto attack. My friends, that’s my suggestion:
“Stab your foe in the back twice. First strike removes 1 boon, the second applies stealth.”
There you go, Cloak and Dagger on steroids, but harder to hit. And I’m sure everybody would be happy to trade the evade for stealth. If anything, increase the initiative or make it slower, and then we have a real skill shot.
“But what about P/P?”
Well, like I posted on another topic, P/P is easy to “fix”. Just make Body Shot a blast finisher to combo with Black Powder.
Overall changes:
S/P now have acess to stealth, but doesn’t have any bursty skill (but would be the “best” weapon set, imo)
S/D gets Pistol Whip (change the name :^T )
P/P now have acess to stealth.
What do you guys think? Seems fair and balanced?
(edited by Asomal.6453)
Play a warrior. I suggest investing in toughness/power first (aka soldier’s amulet). With a huge HP pool and some decent defense, you’ll have plenty of time to learn how to “react” to burst, conditions, cc’s… Please be noted, you are there to learn, not to be a killing machine. Warrior’s are an ideal class to newbies! Easy to understand and farly good against other newbies.
After playing the warrior for a while, you’ll probably have a decent reaction to your stunbreakers / condition removals/ when to block and when to dodge, etc. Now you are ready to pick a class you feel like playing. First off, spec however you want, don’t listen to those scrubs saying “omg your build sucks!1”. Play whatever you feel comfortable with. After you get used to it, try to improve your build by checking it weaknesses. “I’m lasting much longer in fights, but my damage isn’t enough to kill my nemesis on time. Maybe I should change my traits/skills to something more agressive but still pretty tankable?” Do it, till you have the “perfect build” for you!
You can actually dodge in this game.
I had to laugh last night @ the all thief p/d pre-made that we faced in tPvP. They were super gimmicky, but managed to keep the score fairly close due to their imba stealth. That said, we had 2 good bunkers on our side and we were able to lock down two points pretty easily and secure the match.
As for the OP: yea, there are definitely more thieves and mesmers lately, but what can you do? ANet refuses to level the playing field for other classes, so either join them, or leave.
Wins match, complains that stealth is imba and then says this. GG biased, community is biased.
I’ve heard some people here and perhaps Anet too say that the game is supposed to be balanced around team play and not 1v1. I beg to disagree.
1v1 is all that really matters.
If you balance for dueling, team balance will take care of itself. I win a good majority of my matchup on my mesmer and seriously wonder why warriors are even played anymore. Forget teamwork. If I can consistently win over another class 1v1 with absolutely no effort on my part, something is wrong.
I like to think I’m skilled, but there’s no way I can be that good. It’s clearly a class issue. I can take down most thieves easy, but I’ve heard Anet say that thieves are the “ultimate duelists”. That’s nonsense. Every class should be awesome in duels. Teamwork is less important that 1v1.
Lately Anet seems to be introducing more teamwork mechanics. I think that’s wrong. It should be designed such that everyone acting in their own best interests creates the optimal strategy.
Maybe, try playing another class and realise balancing around 1×1 is just silly?
That’s just an excuse cos they weren’t able to balance the game around 1v1. There’s no way to balance a game around team play imo, there will always be op and up classes.
Dota/HoN/LoL says hi.
I’m going to guess you play an Ele.
Bingo!
The good ol’ days when thieves were nÂș1 threat are long gone :^T
Today’s (thief, engineer & warrior view):
1. Rangers (immortal to conditions until Anet decide whether or not EB is working as intended)
2. Elementalists
3. Mesmers
4. Necromancers
5. Engineer
6. Thief
7. Guardian
8. Warriors
(edited by Asomal.6453)
My team vs Team Paradigm EU – I’m dueling with one of the best Ele players in the game:
Not to take credits from you or call the elemen a bad player. You did outplay him, good job. However, I think if he didn’t panic at the begining, using Mist Form against Blade Trail, he’d have won.
