The New Dailies -- Feedback welcome

In case some people don’t realize it, there are private PvP rooms now set up just to get dailies done. They usually say Dailies, No Trolling or something like that. Even though I’m mostly a PvE player I often end up getting dailies there because its’ faster and cooperative.

Today 3 people let me kill them for my daily player kills, I capped a point and won on a guardian all in one game, without PvPing at all. Just saying.

Was it fun?

For people like me who gets stressed in an unpleasant way by PvP, yes. It is fun. People are chatting and taking turns. It’s friendly, which is how I like to play. I especially don’t like being singled out as a poor PvP player (which I am and I’m unlikely ever to improve at my age, health and temperament)

I read that they tried to put it in game but when the inventory filled up and the game tried to put more in, the character couldn’t move until they cleared out the inventory. Which can cause some problems in areas such as WvW.

That was actually removed a while ago.

What was removed? You still can’t get auto loot the way OP wants.

I think the legendary loot he is getting is the bloodstone dust and empyreal fragments. OP, you should just delete those mats if you are hoarding too much of then, they just drop too much even though they are a high tier crafting mat, you dont need to hoard then.

He says he has only been playing for 10 hours. I doubt he has hit level 80 yet, which is required to get T7 mats.

I’d like to, once again, air my major issues with the NPE, and share how it continues to impact my gaming.

It introduced another power creep. In both progression CDI threads, one thing that was stated over and over again was that a power creep was unwanted. There were tons of suggestions for other systems of progression, but it was nearly unanimous that adding power imbalances to the game wasn’t a really fun option.

Snip

Power creep? I must be missing something. How does the New Player Experience cause level 80s to be stronger?

By doling out skills in small chunks, and later in the experience. I thought that would be fairly obvious.

EDIT: I’m using Nike’s infamous “Moa test” from the CDI threads. If at level 80, you can kill a moa faster than you could at level 1, that’s a power creep.

Hmmm. Power creep is a term in MMOs that mean successive expansions/content of a game have increased levels and more powerful gear, such as WoW’s player’s need to get better gear with each new expansion, causing old content and maps to become outdated and too easy to play in. For example, dungeons that originally required a full team become so easy with the player’s increase in power that they become soloable. The traditional meaning has nothing to do with how skills are handed out while leveling.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/06/the-soapbox-the-problem-with-power-creep-and-progression/

Power creep refers to vertical progression. Having access to more of your abilities does make you more powerful. This post (particularly the last paragraph) is what I was talking about, and I just spent an hour dredging through Nike’s post history to find it- it was a plainswurm and not a moa. Having access to 1 weapon skill is much weaker than having access to all 5. Thus, it introduced a power creep that previously didn’t exist.

/shrug. In that case all games have power creep, as you are now defining it. All chars start off with minimal skills and unlock more skills as they progress. Guild Wars 1 had this all along and Guild Wars 2 also had this since the beginning as you had to unlock weapon skills by getting new weapons and restarting the learning of them from autoattack. Utility, elite skills and traits didn’t unlock till later levels also.

However, that’s not the way that term is defined (google it) which is why I asked.

By the way, you might want to read up on the definition of vertical progression also.

Yes, all games have a power creep, even GW2 prior to the NPE. Which is why I stated it introduced even more of a power creep.

Yet at the end of leveling, a level 80 from before the NPE has the same power as a level 80 from after the NPE, assuming same gear and same traits. If you end up at the same spot at the end, it’s not a power creep.

Or is it, while leveling, chars get powerful in chunks and not dribbles, then maybe it causes problems while leveling? Is that what you are saying? That’s still not power creep where over the years, max level characters reach higher levels and get stronger, (like WoW where the current max is level 100) since maxed level chars with the same gear and traits are equal to max level chars from before the NPE.

(Actually I’m not sure we are talking about the same thing as I’m using the accepted definition and it seems you using your own definition where it’s not about max level characters, who with each new content release get ever stronger gear and in most cases relevel to a new max level (like WoW and how it has people relevel and regear with each expansion).

He got exotic gear within the first 10 hours of playing??? Is that even possible? As far as I know that doesn’t drop until about level 65. I suspect he is talking about the gem store armor skins though. That can go in his wardrobe. He really doesn’t need to use that until he gets his level 80 gear.

It’s depressing seeing how many people posted here to oppose the idea, especially pointless posts like ‘No thank you.’ It wouldn’t really hurt you, yet you complain nevertheless.

On top of this, some of the excuses against this idea are a bit ridiculous. The very fact that there are a few MMOs who already have this feature should tell you that there are people interested in this and it’s one of those nice little things that adds a lot to the game.

At least Astral Projections provided a good reason as to why this might be difficult to implement, not before posting that lame ‘creative names’ excuse though. :P

/shrug. There are names that get through the name filter. If you read the Account and Technical support forum you will periodically see posts protesting forced name changes and justifications why their name couldn’t possibly be against TOS. (Hint, when they post the names, they are. One of the last ones I read was a name that implied a man who (well I guess I can’t say what the man was doing without getting an infraction)

If the items crafted had these names then they are also against TOS and changing them would cost ANet time and money to track down and rename. If they were traded not by the trading post but player to player and more than once, they might be impossible to track down, regardless of how offensive the name is.

If other games can get around this problem without significant cost in support time and money, then fine. But I suspect the other games don’t bother to do so and the names remain in circulation on these crafted items.

At launch the the fire elemental used to absolutely crush people. People died so often they were fighting naked. Even before Megaservers it was a tough boss that regularly downed and killed people. The Maw was the same. He would roam around the lake and if down and kill those who weren’t paying attention or didn’t dodge in time. Now because he is swarmed by so many, he doesn’t move from his spot. You never get to see what he can actually do.

While I really like the Megaservers for making the maps more lively, I don’t like what they do to world bosses. Maybe those would be better if they were in some kind of instanced map with a lower population cap.

Wouldn’t this system of tagging the item also require the trading post to be revamped to sell them? As far as I can tell, the item has to have its code recognized by the trading post in order for someone to put it in and give it a price. Since the codes seem to be hard set, a flexible coding system would mean that these items can’t be sold through the trading post but only through player to player trading, which is something ANet doesn’t want to encourage.

Well, since we don’t know the numbers, it’s always possible that in spite of the veteran’s complaints about how it’s affecting them that it’s doing what it was intended to do, retain new players longer. That’s one possible reason why ANet hasn’t changed the NPE in spite of numerous posts by non new players.

Really this is what it’s all about. Are more new players staying than old players leaving over the NPE.

I think that people who hate it really hate it…but I think their feelings about it make them believe they’re greater in number than they are (just my opinion here). In other words they dislike it so much that they can’t conceive of that not being the most common reaction.

I don’t think most older players love it. I think most older players don’t really give it much thought one way or another (again my opinion).

But the real question has always been how the NPE affects the players that say came in on the $10 sale, again as compared to how many people will actually leave because of it.

Considering how old this thread is now, 5 months, if ANet’s numbers were showing a drop in new player retention then it would have shown up by now. I expect it would have shown up in the first month if it were enough to be significant. I can’t see a company holding on to a build that is doing the opposite of what it was supposed to do, not for months and hurting their bottom line. (Compared to the trait system where they have changed it already in response to feedback and plan to change it even more)

I’ve only leveled new chars to level 20 but truthfully I didn’t see what the fuss is about. The part about dancing for the cows is no worse and not significantly different than the heart in the Diessa Plateau where you threaten, sit, or bow to cows. It occurred to me if the game at launch had people dancing to the Queensdale cows and it was changed to carrying food to them there would have been even more posts about that change and how dancing added flavor to the area and how feeding cows ruined that heart and was boring.

For hand health reasons, I could do without all the pop up rewards when leveling that I have to click on, but getting rewarded frequently is a proven method to keep people interested. It was mildly annoying to have to backtrack to a skill point, but I’ve leveled 4 to level 20 to see the new system at low level and leveling was so fast it was at most 3 skill points I had to back track to, not a large number, and in the amount of time that you play a character, a tiny percent of the play time.

I wonder how they handle the “practical jokers” who name a char against TOS and craft and sell large numbers of items with the tag, for example, crafted by Kitten You or crafted by Kill All (members of minority group)? Do these names all change automatically even after they’ve been sold a few times or does the company need to spend time and money tracking them down?

the game doesn’t have a system for detecting against TOS names at creation?

Some, yes. But creative spelling can get names past the censors.

Why do you want your Gladium to be a prostitute?

She’s spent her whole life trapped in a Flame legion harem. Now that she’s out, that’s the only role she understands for a woman. Indoctrination from childhood is hard to escape.

By making a female Charr with a prostitute back history, your likely applying human sex roles to them, not Charr sex roles.

A prostitute isn’t a sex role in the Free Legions, but in Flame Legion the women are all essentially sex slaves. In fact, the Flame Legion has the most human sex roles of any group in Tyria—at least how they’ve been through most of human history.
Free Legions charr would be completely baffled by Asynda’s behavior—which is why I’d have her servicing in Lion’s Arch, and not in Ascalon.
So long as I develop Asynda’s mental state, background, & character properly, I think it fits in fine with roleplay.

I think I see what you’re saying, however the human terms sex slave or prostitute have human meanings which I doubt carry over to Charr culture. The Charr might not even have a word or a cultural definition for a female who mates outside a legally binding ceremony (a harlot) and calling her that has connotations that may be invalid when applied to Charr culture. It may be something that no female Charr would ever apply to herself and may think of as a ridiculous concept that females who mate without a ceremony first have a name for that.

The charr wouldn’t call her a Harlot, I know. At best they’d call her strange or crazy, and at worst they’d call her a flame sympathizer or a heretic.
However, the concept of a prostitute DOES exist in other Tyrian cultures, and in the melting pot of Lion’s Arch, I’m sure every citizen comes to understand its meaning. Asynda doesn’t call herself “Harlot,” and wouldn’t introduce herself as such in an RP scenario—she just calls herself “Asynda.”
However, the people of Lion’s Arch may well refer to her as ‘Harlot,’ especially those for whom the term has meaning. Regardless, Free Legions charr will be confused by and scornful of her—but that confusion and cultural incongruity are specific reasons WHY I chose to make Asynda what she is. She’s meant to be isolated from her own people.
My ex-soldier Revenant, Kione, will be written to experience that confusion and lack of understanding when she encounters Asynda—but as sharers of the same power, they will be forced to help each other in spite of backgrounds so different they can’t understand each other.

Maybe instead of a term that refers to sexual behavior, a term that refers to enslavement of the mind or spirit? Asynda Unfree, or if you want to portray her as a heretic, Asynda Heretical? Asynda Unbound if you want to suggest she freed herself from captivity.

What do you mean by a debuff to the reward track? That they lose progress or they gain progress slower?

they gain progress slower

So, permanent is permanent? Forever? That’s kind of harsh.

Generally you don’t want to hand out permanent, irreversible punishment unless you are completely done with them. Punishment with increasing severity, yes. But a permanent debuff with no way to work it off if you change your behavior is more likely to cause people to quit rather than reform.

Interesting, but you might want to reconsider the Harlot part of the name. It may be an old term but it’s meaning is known and if reported by someone, you will likely either get a forced name change or a suspension.

Haha well, initially I wanted to call her Asynda the Whor* but I figured they’d make me change it.
I’m hoping people will care less about Harlot.
If not, I can just thesaurus-search less obvious names for that profession. Fingers crossed though XD

Well for role play purposes, the story of a Charr prostitute slave might not work. If they are like the big land mammals, they likely go into heat and then at most, once a year. If they have long lived dependent cubs, it may only be once every 2 or 3 years. Since the males see the females as sexually attractive at that time, they may be completely uninterested in female Charrs at other times. By making a female Charr with a prostitute back history, your likely applying human sex roles to them, not Charr sex roles.

I’m afraid I just don’t understand the need for this item when other locations offer FREE access to all the needed stations (and can even return you to where you were previously….for FREE). Click WvW icon, Enter your Borderland (yes, might be a queue on certain nights). FREE access to everything you need and simply exit WvW for FREE return to wherever you were (or hop thru the portal for a FREE trip to LA). I’ve had and used several 2 week ones (rewards), but doing the WvW option just seemed better to me.

I guess is should be thankful that someone is funding the game by purchasing “convenience” items that make no sense.

Like you said, it’s a convenience item. If someone wants to go to a place with “one stop shopping” and no additional running around or portal load time, then this is it.

Myself, I buy $20 a month in gems to buy items. I refuse to buy the RNG items and I don’t have much use for the various boosters or finishers, so that pretty much leaves skins and convenience items like this. So far, I’ve been very pleased with it, in spite of thinking as you did, before purchase, that is was a kind of pointless. But I read others saying how much they liked theirs, and it went on sale with nothing else I wanted to buy with my $20 so, I bought it.

By the way, your argument about cost can be used for the copper fed salvage o matic or the gem store harvesting tools as the tools and the basic/fine kits can be bought with karma also, yet many people buy those items.

Well, now that Smooth Penguin managed to drag Godwin’s law into the argument (by the way Smooth, that’s a sign that that person has lost the argument and can’t bring up anything rational to say) I would say it’s time to close this thread down.

I just want to nitpick this point a bit. Godwin’s law merely states that in any discussion on a forum, the German political party of the 1930s will be brought up. It does not imply that the arguments are no longer rational. That being said, references to that German political party of the 1930s often tend to be out of scale, subject to slippery slope fallacies, or are appeal to emotions, but there are legitimate applications of such comparisons.

Maybe so, but in this case I would say it’s definitely a sign that Smooth hasn’t anything else rational to bring to the argument. Comparing death, suffering, torture and war to the loss of an loot bag? A possible theoretical loss at that.

I’m only comparing the scenario that one group felt what they did was the right thing, when in reality, everyone despised them for it. A similar example would be the Spanish Inquisition. Or Christopher Columbus stealing the native American’s lands.

Edit – One more well known example would be the reason why Moses opposed the Pharaoh, and why he parted the Red Sea.

Are you really comparing historical events that involved death, suffering, and torture with the slight inconvienece of missing an event?

That is just…special.

Well, there is that loot bag. Surely that’s equal to a very small genocide at least.

/sarcasm

Really Smooth, you aren’t helping your argument in the least with these strange and outlandish comparisons.

I’m holding out for Shoop da Whoop. What this game needs is a laser breathing dragon and its laser breathing minions.

Everybody downs a bottle of vodka and joins the conga line.

Seriously though, this is why “unwritten rules” are silly. They’ll always conflict, and either way, someone will be left out in the cold. So, so long as no-one is breaking actual rules, there is very little one can really complain about.

Yet, one can complain about very little. ^^

/shrug. As to what what OP is doing, it’s somewhat selfish but in practical terms impacts very few people. Just the ones on that day, that time, that shard, who don’t get to do it because they were late/not reading map chat/refused to do it with that guild.

People miss out on the champ bag much more often because someone doesn’t have a key than because of OP’s guild’s actions. If I were OP, my main consideration would be the ill will generated towards his guild by their actions, as seen by the responses he gets in map chat. If I were a guild leader, this would be something I would be weighing in my decision to get one additional loot bag.

I think ANet needs the bug like the Minion Apocalypse bug that was in Guild Wars 1.
(Before the October 4, 2011 update, getting banned by Dhuum in a PvP outpost would trigger Minion Apocalypse and could quickly cause the whole outpost to be swarmed with bone horrors.)

New gem store items, but I’m not sure that actually needs a patch.

My personal guess is, no patch today.

If it were me in this situation, I would wait a month or two months, see if it sells in that period of time. If it doesn’t sell and the price is still low, then you will have a couple of options. By then you will likely have the relisting fee, especially if you work towards getting it. You can pull it and sell at the then current price or the highest buy order if you don’t want to chance it, or you can eat the loss and give it to your girlfriend so she can have that legendary.

Your best bet, imo, is to put it out of your mind for now and just play.

BTW you can turn off the profanity filter for your chat screen in options….

Just in case you want to see curse words ….. or have an issue with baby-cats….

The filter in game doesn’t change words to kitten, they become dashes, such as the word re- – - -tion. So if OP is seeing the word kitten in map chat, people are typing it out.

“I’m plenty scary!!!”
“I don’t know. I think you’re beautiful, and your fur is pretty great.”
“I AM NOT BEAUTIFUL!!! …although…my fur is pretty great, isn’kitten” chuckle “See you around, cub.”

Edit: Why oh why does the filter isn’kitten?

If you look at the words, isn’t ‘it and disregard the spaces and the ’ you will see a word for a female body part. I have to say, the forum filter has been an education for me. I didn’t know there were so many words I needed to be shocked and offended by until I started reading these forums. ^^

Harpoon gun simply doesn’t work without water. That is all there is to that. And while I don’t see why spear and trident couldn’t be used on land in the most basic of manners, they would need brand new skills. If you are doing that, why not just bring in brand new weapon types?

Possibly as a gun skin? They might need a different animation to make them really work but it’s not impossible.

However the spears and tridents could be easily adapted to a staff skin.
