Will we ever get content which rewards SKILL!

ANet is still coming to grips with the idea that players who claim to want hard content believe that content being hard is not rewarding in and of itself.

In a MMO u have to be rewarded for any content, thats just how it works. if i was playing super mario then not getting rewarded wouldnt be a problem!!!!!

There are tons of issues with developing hard content.

There’s the fact that most people will simply not do hard content. Because if it’s hard, that usually translates to tons of failures, which isn’t fun for most people. So developing hard content isn’t a good way to allocate limited developer resources.

There’s the fact that the people asking for hard content are not content with just difficulty, they also want rewards. That much is obvious with people complaining about Liadri and Fractals, both of which are typical “difficult” content but their rewards are not “up to par”.

There’s the fact that most of the new stuff will now come with achievements and that comes with the achievement locusts. If it’s hard content, the achievement locusts complain that they’re being “robbed” of points and that they’re unable to keep up with the other high AP players because of that.

I remember back in the day when you completed hard content and your only reward was “The princess is in another castle”. I sure didn’t start writing angry letters to Nintendo for that one, I just kept going on.

Gw2 already caters to ppl who dont like that hard core content, there r plenty of things to do in the game which arent difficult. Just bc the majority of players dont like hard core content doesnt mean it shouldnt be added in a game. If they add a hard mode dungeon once every 6 months, they will have time to pump out this mindless grind, which its seems to me u like, for the ppl who want this easy mode time consuming content and also gain more players, which there is a bunch of just not in gw2 bc there is no hard core content! who like hard core content.

When ur playing Mortal combat for example, do u expect to be rewarded with items and gold bc u can beat the final boss on hard? no bc the game isnt built like that. on the other hand with gw2 being a MMO, a huge part of the game is the rewards. when ur playing a MMO its only natural to be rewarded for doing harder content and being better at the game. instead of u saying oo y do u have to be rewarded for doing hard content?! y dont u ask y do i only get rewarded for putting so many hours in the game?!

I have a completely different category for the question of reward in gaming. I don’t believe reward should be based on skill or time spent. Reward should come through playing the game. That’s what we play games for in terms of the intrinsic/extrinsic reward components of gaming. It would be silly to target reward systems to any niche player. That said, I do believe there should be tiered difficulty, in instances, with appropriate reward for those players who wish to demonstrate and improve their skills. But, there is absolutely no reason an MMO needs to design reward systems around any one type of player—especially not when the MMO attracts a broad diversity of players. Much better to design systems with appropriate reward for all playstyles.

Your right rewards should come from playing the game, but the thing is with items like foefire’s essence, infinite light, etc. they should be obtained doing difficult, instanced content like u said, not grinding and grinding and some more grinding. these items after being obtained through the hard mode ( or w.e u want to call it) instance, can be sold on the tp for ppl who like to grind and have gold but cant do the content bc it is to difficult. gw2 can cater too everyone from what i see in it, combat is awesome huge open world, massive wars, the core of the game is awesome its just the content being released is too grindy/easy atm, imo.

Define “skill”.

edit: and no, I don’t mean the group related setting you listed. What do you define individual player skill as? Joining mumble or teamspeak is not “skill”

Too me a skilled player is someone who uses certain skills to deflect dmg and not only their dodge, a person who doesnt look at their skill bar but watches the enemy and waits for them to use their burst attacks to dodge, someone who sees his team mate about to go down and saves him by knock back or supporting. for example, im doing a dungeon on my guardian, my team mate gets really low on hp and the boss is about to use his one shot skill, right before the boss uses it i pop virtue of courage block that attack. things like that make a player skilled imo, there is more too it but those r the examples i can think of right now. ur right joining mumble and teamspeak is not skill but when ur working with a group, communication is huge be it ts or chat box but the content im looking for would take a lot of team work, and to do so communication is key.

SAB: Trib Mode? The Gauntlet? The Mad King’s Clocktower? A level 30 Fractal? TA Forward/Up? The Norn in Belcher’s Bluff? WvW? sPvP Team Play? Want me to go on?

They are totally starting to make more content for players that want harder skill based content. Back to back months have seen additions in this way.

No game company has ever released content in this fashion before. They need to learn how to do it as they go. I don’t think a lot of people appreciate how hard it is to release something that is playable and at the same time they are still learning from it. Give it time. If you feel it’s not for you, come back in 3-6 months as they get better at it and they will.

SAB was nerfed, the only hard part of the gauntlet was the last boss, clock tower i finished in 5 tries, fractals 30+ still easy mode if u have a good amount of AR, TA= easy mode, WvW is difficult:S since when?! the norn in the belcher’s bluff was hard ill give u that one took me about a hour, tpvp is skilled based so ill give u that one too. that is 0.5% of the gw2 content.

Dont get me wrong i know gw2 is still growing, but most of those things u mentioned arent close to what difficulty lvl im talking about. i’m talking about content where u have to save certain skills for certain attacks and have to keep the boons up, theres alot more thing which can make the game much more difficult but at the same time alot more funnnn!

No, because then people couldn’t accuse others of being entitled and lazy without having the actual skill and proof of said skill to make such a claim. And as you know, if there’s an objective evaluation of your worth in a video game, it’s bound to cause mental breakdowns if one indeed realizes he/she is not l33t as they thought. The thought of having to talk trash and having to back it up is scary to many. It’s much easier if the goals were set as boring and easy as possible so that time spent is the key factor, so then it’s easy to call others bads and whatever new term for noob they have every month.

That, and some people have very narrowly defined definitions of skill.

What ur basically saying is make everything easy mode but time consuming so ppl can think they r better then what they really r in the game. to me difficulty makes the game fun or not, i dont enjoy spvp bc its usually zergy, imo, but i enjoy tpvp bc it takes skill. at the same time if this game is always coming out with new skins and new items which cost gold ur going to want to buy it and as a casual gamer u dont have time to do so since evrything is time consuming. this would not only reward skilled players but it will also, if they can complete it, help ppl who dont have time to grind to get a skin or set of armour they want. the game is filled with content which only takes time to complete/get. if they add content like this to the game it will just give more ppl more options to get gold and to have fun.

No because that would satisfy a niche portion of the population and they don’t run the game, casuals do. For example see SAB, that got nerfed less than a week after release.

I see what ur saying but just bc someone is casual doesnt mean they dont like to play difficult content. SAB was something for everyone to do not just for a certain type of players, sure the trib mode was made for that but the reason y ppl complained was bc of the implementation. if doing trib mode didnt reward ap, i dont think it would of been such a big deal.

I was hoping we can get a answer here from Anet. i was wondering if we will ever get content which is really difficult ( need regen/protection etc, up 75% of the time, need support/tank/dps, need to be orginized and using a chat program) which will rewarded those who complete it with a rare item set which can we sold or used. i for one dont have time to play everyday but id like to think im a skilled player. with that said, even if im skilled in gw2, doesnt mean im going to be able to show it off. if something like this was added to the game, i would, and many other ppl, be able to make gold and gear out without having to put so many hours in the game but at the same time, its not like any group can actually do the content, it wont be farmed by too many ppl. i was expecting this from the exp dungeon before the game released but was up for a huge let down. hopefully we get something like this added to the game. if u want content like this reply with ur ideas and or show ur support!

Skill based stuff is coming. They’ve been testing the waters with things like Liadri. As for the grind, yes, sadly, that’s what many players want. If you have any suggestions for A-net,I’m sure they’d love to hear them in the suggestion forum.

I hope ur right about that. Ive suggested many things but anet doesnt listen. the best way to have dealt with ascended armour was to give them the same stats as exotics but just give them a few infusion slots. this will not force ppl to get ascended items if they do not want to do fractals and will allow those who want to max/farm fractals to do so. gw2 was a mmo where u can get to max lvl gear urself out in exotic and take a 4 months break if u wanted, then come back and not be behind anyone. ascended items ruined that, and by the looks of it kitten is going to be expensive which = more grind grind grind grind and GRIND!

When it comes down to it, if 2 ppl r dueling lets say, one of these guys is full exotic and one is full ascended ( gear/weaps accessories) and the person who is in exotic is a better player, the person who is in the ascended gear is going to win every time unless he makes a few mistakes. If someone is really bad at the game it doesnt matter if u give them double the stats of exotic armour, their still going to get their kitten handed to them. Gw2 is a skill based game but when it really comes down to it ascended gear WILL make a big difference when vsing other players with the same skill as u, give or take.

How ascended items should work

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Beast Sos.1457

Beast Sos.1457

The way Anet implemented ascended items does not fit the game. Its nice that we have another set other than exotic which allows u to do content u cant with just pure exotics but the fact that ascended items give u a major stat upgrade, once u have the full set, was a pointless thing to add to a game, which is suppose to be skill based. I dont understand y they cant just add ascended items which dont give u the stats upgrade but allow u to get more AR on ur armour, say 15 ar each piece of armour/weap. This will allow those ppl, who enjoy doing harder content and like to grind, enjoy the game but it wont let ppl be over powered in WvW and wont force most ppl to grind for ascended items. I already predict a bunch of ppl coming here saying. “YOU DONT HAVE TOOOOO!” well u kind of do if u want to play the game and not get ur kitten handed to u every time u play vs someone who spends countless hours on the game and has 1k+ gold. All i know is that this game is heading in the wrong direction. I’m pretty sure this will be the last tier of armour added but it still goes against what makes gw2, gw2, a MMO where u can take a few months off, come back, and still be able to compete with ppl who spend everyday playing. For me, ill be playing tpvp until…. kitten ill prob not go back to pve unless this game goes from time>skill to skill>time and less mother lovin GRINDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!

What we’re getting is pretty sad. I know i dont use minis and im sure most other players dont, a 24 hour birthday booster…… i have no idea what it does but dont really care bc its a boost after all and a xp scroll…. thats just laughable. So us loyal customers who have been playing the game since head start/release, r we being rewarded accordingly? Idk is that what playing a year of gw2 is worth to Anet?

Guardian ftw! The GS on the guardian can be ran with any type of build, imo. You can use it for both WvW, pvp( but not the legendary), dungeons, fractals, open world pve. It owns in ALL! I personally love running the GS on a guard, u got ur 5 which is a CC skill u got 3 which blinds a few ppl, 4+2= cure conditions, i just love it! But thats my opinion, to each their own. I would also recommend selling sunrise and wait for new legendaries to be added to the game, just incase u see something u like alot more than sunrise and if not u can always make sunrise again and have a kitten ton of gold left

Okay i need to clarifiy something. I did not say the sword is a bad weap. I said that the sword is more of a pvp/single target weap. I also said i would like to convert it to pvp, but all u guys seen was refund and went all nerd raged then started commenting( not all of u guys). I do force myself to use bolt just bc i have it but thats only bc i cant use it in pvp unless i WvW which, imo, is way too boring. So this isnt a I Hate Bolt thread, its a extra options for legendaries thread but that still doesnt change the fact that Bolt still needs a huge upgrade. The howler is more noticeable!!!! that says enough.

That’s kind of a silly desicion isn’t it? All that time and effort, to craft something you don’t even use.

As for the idea of selling to a vendor for half the price on the TP – No. All you’d have to do is wait until there isn’t one, find someone with the same weapon, put it up for a ridiculous amount and just get free gold.

Ur right i messed up. I made the predator first then sold it, after that i still needed karma and sps but i wanted to gear out my toon so i just bought foefire’s essence and after that i saw no point in getting a legendary GS, which i should have, and went for bolt. It would be nice to have the option to convert it to pvp bc then i would be using all the time since alot of classes own with the sword in pvp.

First off Bolt needs a massive upgrade! its been the same since the start of the game except footsteps, which r tiny, and the sound effects. Its not a cheap legendary yet the howler is more noticeable. For gameplay, its a awesome pvp/single target weapon, i dont disagree with that, that is y i would like to convert it to pvp, then i would be using it all the time. If i did have the chance to refund it it for half the price i would just to make sunrise. Bolt is the only legendary that hasnt been really upgraded, since it didnt need to be at the time but now its a different story, the underwater legendaries have better effects. Being able to use ur legendary in pvp would be something that would make me probably love bolt but it also needs some upgrades to make it more legendary!

So being the noob i am, i got bolt. Its been since before the new year and i still hate myself for getting it. It would be awesome, even though this will probably never happen, if we could sell our legendaries to a certain merch (refund merch) for half the price it is selling on the tp. If someone is willing to sell their legendary for that price then they should be given the option. Another nice thing would be able to convert ur legendary to pvp. I sure as hell dont use the sword often on my guard in pve but if i were to be able to convert it to pvp then i would use it all the time on a ranger, thief, guardian, etc. It would actually be worth it. What do u guys think, would u like either one of these options? If so comment and lets see if we can get Anet to consider these option.

Anet stated that they added ways for players who like to grind and show off their effort

Yep, they did. Their Manifesto was eventually shown to be a lie, when ArenaNet got afraid that players of classic MMOs wouldn’t play GW2 if it didn’t reward grind.

It still doesn’t change ArenaNet’s statement about grind – how even they know it’s not fun. “Effort”, “dedication” and etc are just ways to say someone has a lot of free time and is willing to waste it without even having fun, but it’s not something that deserves a reward (quite the opposite). The rewards in the game should be for skill, not for time spent.

That is true, skill should be rewarded more than time spent, but thats not the way the game works atm. My post above clarifies my opinion.

u r not forced to buy these skins to play the game on the lvl of ppl who have much more time on their hands. Getting these nice skins in gw2 is for the hardcore

Your definition of “hardcore” doesn’t deserve to get nice skins.

As you mentioned, the grind currently in GW2 rewards time spent. It doesn’t reward skill. It’s the worse kind of grind found in MMORPGs, made to keep people playing pay-to-play MMOs for a long time.

But GW2 is not a pay to play MMO. And, if you actually take a look at the Manifesto (see my signature), ArenaNet itself states why that’s a bad design: “We just don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2. No one enjoys that. No one finds it fun”. If grinding isn’t fun, it should not be rewarded.

Many times long after that Meanifesto quote, which im not going to look for atm since i dont know the exact sources, Anet stated that they added ways for players who like to grind and show off their effort by adding skins such as legendaries, high end exotics, T3 armor, and other skins. The way they made gw2 is that u dont have to grind to get the best stats so u can do temple events, WvW, dragons, and dungeons with out too much of a problem.

And when it comes to hardcore, in gw2 it doesnt take skill to get what u want but that the way the game works. Should they not reward us for doing the content they made specifically for ppl who want to gring. It would be nice if they added a hard 10 man dungeon that is actually difficult, really difficult, which drops the mist weapon set, for example. Not this token bs, actual drops from the bosses.

Gw2 was made to cater to casual players and hardcore. I hear way too many ppl complain about grind for gold for new skins and such but its not like these skins make u any better. u r not forced to buy these skins to play the game on the lvl of ppl who have much more time on their hands. Getting these nice skins in gw2 is for the hardcore, WvW, spvp, tpvp, mini games, and updates every 2 weeks, these all cater to casual players. If u want a certain skin or set, as a casual player, its going to take some time to get it. If u really want it put 20$ irl money, which isnt much if u r working which most casual players r doing, and get ur self that pvt set u wanted or the nice weap/armor skin in the gem shop. Gw2 is not a grindy game, it can be if u make it but it was not intended to force ppl to grind to be able to do the end game content such as i mentioned above. When u think a skin is nice and want it thats on u, the game isnt forcing u to get it, u cant expect the game to make everything easy just so ppl who only have a couple hours of free time, can get anything and everything they want.

This is just a “show off your Legendary” thread, by making them either the center of the attention as opposed to the character. The reality is, nobody cares about your purples since 8 months or so ago.

Best looking Mesmer? Yep.

I didnt know that, if it was like that maybe i would of actually shown mine! Best looking mesmer? nope! Maybe if u had twilight hehe jp

Radiant gloves + Hellfire shoulders…
Human racial t3 top and some cheap legs + shoes…

Gurl you need a makeover.

I love the way my guy looks. Only thing i think i need to change is the silver on the gloves which isnt possible.

After taking a little break from gw2 , i logged in today excited for this new dungeon. wow, just awesome! it was really fun! but whats the point? y should i run it again if the rewards r horrible. i guess u can say, its about having fun not the loot! but its the loot that keeps me wanting to clear these dungeons and makes it more fun because it gives me the excitement of having the chance of getting that item which is worth x amount of gold. i guess its just that gw2 is a casual gamers game. log in, have fun for a hour or two, then go to bed for ur 8 hour shift the next day. i tried(am trying) to get back into gw2 but its lacking in pve rewards and pvp content. i guess ill take a couple months off and come back to see if the game has changed for the better.

just a little advice from someone who HAD 2k gold, dont waste it on legendaries, their not worth it. imo, its better to have the gold than making a legendary that ur going to get sick of especially eternity which imo is a huge waste of gold. other than that gratz! its feels good to have 1k+ gold but dont be like me and spend it all in a week id also suggest, if u want to make more gold, is to make a legendary and sell it for the profit, thats how i made my gold to begin with but i sure as hell regret spending it on a legendary and some expensive exotics(foefire’s essence, t3 armor).
