I know that it is counter-intuitive to give more importance to close matches than to matches with large score differentials, but it is the logical thing to do. You have to keep in mind that matchmaking and personal rank are two different things. The goal of matchmaking is to offer players the best opportunity to make a difference in the outcome of a match and that outcome is a win or loss regardless of points. From a matchmaking standpoint, large score differentials are less informative and kind of a failure. The goal of a personal rank — besides bragging rights — is to give a stable foundation for a matchmaking algorithm. If you adjust personal rank substantially for uneven matches, there is no way to know what part of the score difference comes from skill and what part from the circumstances of matchmaking. Two things that should be determined independently are messing each other up and don’t really do their job.

@BlaqueFyre, you’re absolutely right. If team composition was invariable it would be an entirely different situation. In that case, an algorithm like glicko-2 could be argued to apply.

Yes and that’s why it’s used since that is what the gamemode was designed around, but due to Solo Queuer complaints and lack of population Solo Queue was shoe horned into it. And as it is right now iirc most/all games that have a PvP gamemode use a variation of Elo/Glicko 2 that have PuG match making.

@OP, it’s almost like sPvP was designed solely for premade 5 v5 teams and not Solo Queue pugs and the Match maker reflects that, where it’s a single team bs team, players were able to choose who their teammates were.

I personally have the feeling the system tries to keep me where i am. First it´s hard to carry matches. If you get the worst guy then ist often GG.
So i maintain a positiv win rate. BUT i constantly loose slighly more the i gain which nearly compensates my win rate. I did hit 150 matches this season and am close where i started and half of the matches are blowouts.
I also wonder why i had been placed low silver with 6:4 in placement matches and someone with 4:6 or 5:5 gets in gold ? Adn that screenshot is a negative win rate after over 100 matches maintaining high gold :-(.

You probably had a lower Mmr to begin with and the players that had the 4:6 had higher, and then it depends on who the people won against during placement matches, the system isn’t based on W/L ratio…. I dont see how people don’t understand this long after the beginning of the season when it’s been explained.

I played over 300 matches this season and I do not notice any settlement effect or improvement of matchmaking at all.
On some days I literally win 80%+ of the matches and on next day I loose 80%+ of the matches (only counting days were I played a significant amount of matches).
I do not think my personal skill can change by such a large margin every day, so I can only attribute it to atrocious match making.

And I only move Up or down only 20-30 points in any given day with over 200 matches played I barely move on win or loss funny how anecdotal evidence works…..

tbh I’d say the system is working properly if your matches are getting closer and closer in points and not blowouts. Mine are starting to get closer so I think I’m reaching where I belong and I’m ok about it as long as the matches aren’t blowouts.

The only time I see blowouts are during off peak hours and when my team has Afkers/intentional Dc’ers. I believe that when players get reported for Intentionally Dc’ing and AfK they should get a manual mmr Penalty so they will move to the bottom faster if they won’t ban them.

Exedore already explained it well enough in his post above. The leaderboard isn’t based on your win to loss ratio, it’s based on your MMR which is in turn based on which players you defeat and which players you lose to. Expected results lead to small changes in rating and upsets lead to bigger changes.

Simple observation will show you that pvp population is low.

No, that’s not good enough. Low compared to what? CS:GO and League of Legends? Certainly, but is it low compared to previous seasons? Only ArenaNet knows, and you certainly don’t work at ArenaNet. In my limited, subjective experience the population is about the same or higher than previous seasons, but I don’t go around presenting that as fact.

If that is the case, how did I place well within the top 250 after only 10 matches? How do other’s remain at or near the top with very few matches.

It may be that in theory the leaderboard is based on MMR. In practice however, it appears to be largely dependent on w/l ratio and playing as few matches as possible.

It’s almost like a Dev stated that there was huge deviation tied to the soft reset, and that overtime it would correct itself… it seems to be doing that the more matches played to dial in the deviation and accurately place people the more they play.

I played over 10 matches today (soloQ) and won 80-90% (try harded a bit) of them. But my MMR barely increased, it is really frustrating.
In old seasons I would have gone up half a division by this because of win streak bonus.

Well the old system was a grind with safety nets at every level and not based on skillful team play so there is that to consider, Legendary in s1-s4 meant next to nothing as with all the divisions during those seasons.

Gwaihir has a good solution though. Thief traps get away with not revealing them because they don’t cause direct damage. A good solution to this is to make applying damaging conditions reveal the thieves. This would make Needle trap and caltrops (even though its not stricly a trap) reveal the thief.

As for the mesmers, they can’t have more than 3 illusions at a time, no single mesmer is hitting you with 5 illusion shatters. Its not possible.

Mesmer can have more than three up it’s a weird timing issue due to the Chronophanta and illusory reversion when they pop shatters after each other is the only explanation I can think of, I didn’t think it was possible but I see it every once in a while

Right now there is no way Anet will rebalance every profession, currently it isn’t the fact D/P is over performing but that D/P is the only set that Can perform at a similar level to what kits the other Classes have. To make other weapon sets viable they would either need to rework them and buff them or to nerf every class on top of reigning in D/P a bit.

I don’t see Karl or the rest of the Devs needing all classes, but they will still add arbitrary buffs so look to get a weapon set buffed.

You and your duo partner get your Mmr Averaged and then a Rating boost applied.

But I think those MMR thresholds would make it more fair and less frustrating since moving goalposts are frustrating. Since the leaderboard currently seems to take decimal MMR into account (making it close to impossible to be tied with someone), imagine how frustrating it would be if you would miss the one of the titles by a fraction of a MMR point or drop out of top 3 or 10 because you got unlucky too often with afkers / people who get paid to throw.

So? Why should people be tied if they don’t have the exact same rating? Anyone can get the titles, everybodies has the same chances to attempt for them in game, why should they make a competitive system less competitive? People complained about material rewards being locked behind divisions and said competitive players should only be rewarded with titles, guess what that’s what they did, they have the competitive players titles that have value because you have to compete to get them, more so for the more prestigious ones.

So again why should they cater to your ideas that removes value from these competitive rewards?

It is simple.
At 2000+ MMR even 10 MMR points difference is just 0.5% difference, let alone a decimal MMR. Do you want to tell me the MMR algorith is so great that it can determine the skill of someone with more than 99.5% accuracy in just a few hundred games or less? I am very doubtful considering this is a team game and you are only 20% of the team.
I think it is save to say that a difference of 0.5% or less MMR points can be blamed to matchmaking luck even after lets say 300 matches.
So it is impossible to say that anyone is more deserving of being rank 1 (or insert any other title threshold) than someone else with really close MMR.
No algorithm will ever nail the skill of someone in a team game like this to the exact value. It is not a 100m race where you can say someone run the track in 9.8s and the next person needed 9.85s where you have a clear winner.

Again if they don’t meet the requirements they don’t deserve the title what don’t you understand about this being in a competitive game mode for a competitive title.

That’s bullkitten. Game experience = game knowledge. Game knowledge is crucial in PvP.

But I roamed and did small scale things in wvw for most of my time in gw2. This is my first season that I’ve actually participated in, and I only have 600 games played. (Ranked+unranked.) I’m rank 212 right now (1,762 rating) with about 200 ranked games played this season. What does that tell you?

(I’ll answer that for you. Game experience can be earned in places outside of spvp, therefore improving someones rating because of time spent in spvp will make ratings more in-accurate!)

Did I miss the part where they said they wanted “improved rating” for experience?

They said they wanted to get better rating for “experience” so they did yes.

The reason why the system is kittened is because you lose between 20-30 rating for a loss but only gain 11-12 rating back for a single win.

That’s not fair.

It should be you regain the rating you lost back from the prior match.

The amount you win or lose is solely based on the ratings of each team.. what you would want would essentially be a w/l ratio which is complete crap to show rankings.

And I am thankful about their wise decision, especially after all the leaderboard weaknesses and match manipulation got exposed.

Although I would like it even better if the titles would not be exclusive to specific ranks, but based on reaching specific MMR values. The leaderboard should be for bragging only just like the AP leaderboards, I am not getting exclusive titles for being ranked top x there, either.

Example:
God of PvP:
Reach 2200 MMR after playing a minimum of 250 matches during a single season.
Legendary Demigod:
Reach 2150 MMR after playing a minimum of 250 matches during a single season.
Immortal Legend:
Reach 2100 MMR after playing a minimum of 250 matches during a single season.
Unyielding Legend:
Reach 2000 MMR after playing a minimum of 250 matches during a single season.
Rank 11 – 25: Relentless Legend.
Reach 1950 MMR after playing a minimum of 250 matches during a single season.
Ruthless Legend:
Reach 1900 MMR after playing a minimum of 250 matches during a single season.
Merciless Legend:
Reach 1800 MMR after playing a minimum of 250 matches during a single season.

The actual values could be changed of course, I based the suggestion on the current EU leaderboards. (disclaimer: my own MMR is only in silver 3 after 247 matches played)

You just want to remove all the competitiveness out of the game don’t you? Wow it’s fine how they have it now, it allows people their bragging rights, there is nothing besides a title, and if you can’t compete to get it then those players don’t deserve it, period.

If I remember correctly, the decay just effects your post on on the leaderboard. It still uses your rating prior to decay for matchmaking purposes, meaning you’re not being matched with bronze players. I left the game for a bit for Christmas, came back, lost a match, won a match, recovered all of my decayed rank.

If rating decay is intended to reflect skill “rust” from time away, then why would it place me against players at my original rating? Why change the rating at all then and just let me lose?

And you cannot tell me that it’s intended to keep active players at the top of the leaderboard when the “top players” have only played 13 matches.

They wanted it to keep active players in the leader board but because of how t was implemented allows for people to play only one game every 72 hrs to maintain their Rating

Of course, that is true. But is not relevant. I am saying experience is a factor that should be taken into account when evaluating skill. I mean seriously. How many resumes have you completed that did not require you to list prior experience? Would you really pay a software engineer with 10 years experience the same as one with no experience?

So, my suggestion is to include it as a factor.

The systems rates you essentially based on performance not on experience two completely different things, you should not be considered more skilled because you have played a lot…

That’s completely untrue. The professionals have played several thousand games and are, obviously, very skilled. Likewise, new players (having no experience), have played very few games and are low skilled.

I would go as far as to say there is not only a correlation, but a causation. Show me someone who is good at anything without experience? You can’t have skill without it.

Do you think it is fair for the top 250 spots to be loaded with alt accounts? That makes a mockery of the whole thing. Look at position number one and two on the leaderboards. Another mockery.

Partial Fix For Ranked PvP: Disincentivize It

Few points:

1. If you are a dedicated PvE player and a bad PvP player you can craft ascended gear way faster if you just grind in PvE.

2. Currently the reward system already incentivize winning, since you get 3 times the pips compare to if you lose. If you take away pips if you lose, people simply won’t participate.

3. Without rewards, ranked will be dead. I am at gold, so I am not a total noob. But if it wasn’t because of the reward, I will not bother play ranked. I imagine you will get rid of almost all the population in bronze, silver, half of gold if you remove reward. Even if you are plat or Leg, you will prob get pushed to silver and gold due to bell curve.

4. I do agree that Anet should set a minimum pvp level (20 maybe) to enter ranked. But even without the min level, new players will likely be in bronze anyways, it shouldn’t affect MOST of the experienced players. And if you are experienced you shouldn’t stay there for long, I have play them before, you can 1v2, 1v3 them.

You already have to be rank 20…

They just need to lock all servers so no more transfers wait a month or two so people get value from their Gems. Then give each player a choice of what guild they want to be a main part of for WvW then separate all those guilds to three mega server colors Evenly distributed as close to possible, then all PvE/PvP players get randomly assigned to a colour until all populations are as balanced as possible then have it stay locked and have the overflow style maps so Queues aren’t a problem. Problem solved.

Yes people will cry about But mah server identity… blah blah blah. If server identity meant anything then the majority of players in WvW would stack servers and bandwagon.

And to add on to exedore, it’s hard to draw conclusions when not all the info is known for all players plus the two teams. Hopefully there are enough complaints about the hidden Ratings that it pushes Evan’s and the PvP Devs hand to show all players Ratings and Average Team Mmrs after matches, that way players can draw better conclusions and be able to address any perceived issues properly, right now they is not enough solid information to make any grounded conclusions either for or against the system besides the info provided to us on how the sysytem is supposed to work.

I have noticed when I queued with a buddy of significantly less Rating than me that even with the rating boost we had as a team that it averaged our Ratings together due to the quality of Opponents we faced and were teamed with, where I won 2-4 Rating and he won 13-20 every win out of the handful of matches we played, his rating was between 700-800 and mine was 1470ish when we started and it finished closer to 1k after the couple matches while I was worse of from two matches losing approx 20-23 rating each loss.

Because the system is a sham, that’s why. Matchmaking is just a see-saw. ANet keeps our MMR secret for a reason, you know.

That you can make an alt account, get an mmr boost and climb leaderboard is egregious. It’s a shortcut to the top.

That being said, I think this matchmaking system would work only for 5-man, maybe even full solo queue. No duo, no 3-man, no 4-man, FULL solo. I’m not totally sure, but I think that was the case in the past when we had separate solo and team queues.

You are right the system is solely designed around a 5 man Static Team the same as the Game Mode was designed Soley for organized 5 man Premades, that’s one of the issues with the MM, that is why before they shipped season 5 I laughed when everyone wanted a Solo Queue, but players can have an Approximation of their skill level with this system under a Solo Queue.

The lack of variety is killing me.

Sounds like a plan – just about step 3 – is there someting else this season?

Outplaying the DH while using one of the Meta Builds!
I main Thief almost exclusively, I have been in situations where I have had to face DHs with no other options for my actual Roles of +1/Decap do to circumstances of teammates and the match, after figuring out ways to pressure them and kite out their CDs I can normally take on DHs still Good players playing DHs give me trouble since it is an uphill battle.

Also DH vs DH levels the playing field especially if you know how to play DH, They have the Tools to fight each other very Effectively.

But if you want the actual Counter it’s those two I stated previously.

Yeah I’m on my phone so sometimes the quotes mess up. But ever since the first Rev beta it had the CDs they were just extremely low. There are quiet a few videos that showcase Rev from BW1 that highlight the skills.

Anet has one of two things they can do, remove Weapon CDs and only have energy cost then have to rebalance all skills accordingly, or remove the energy cost on weapon skills and rebalance accordingly either could achieve similar results just different flavors of the same thing.

So do I it would accomplish a lot, allowing for better Player-Dev feedback and for peace of mind of players of the system actually working or not, instead of all the perceptions and incomplete information.

So me playing from the very top of Bronze/bottom of Silver Solo to mid Gold? I must be a Platinum level or higher right? No I think I am where I am supposed to be until I improve myself at no point in that whole climb have I had a Win streak over 2-3 wins in a row and my Rating seems to have stabilized and I am against players that are of similar skill that make similar mistakes.

Did you play solo?

For the majority of the season yes, would be nice if they tracked the duo/solo games played. the few times I was Duo Queued was with two guildies one was 739 Rating while I was 1476 the other was around 1250-13xx while I was already 14xx for a combined total of maybe 12-15 games out of 100+ (Not at my computer and don’t have a current screenshot of ranked cames played) Were duoed as I was trying to help them out during those matches my wins only award 2-4 rating increases while losses were between 13-26, so I stopped Duo queuing with my friends it was dragging me down. (Did get the friend at 739 up to 1000 the. He let his acct decay, when I lost approx 40 rating on two losses and each win with him was about 4…)

what does this prove? only that an experienced player on an alt account can take advantage of new/inexperienced players, and nothing more. although i do have a question about something i saw between 4:55-4:59 – how does helseth 1)phantasmal warlock, 2)cry of frustration, 3)phase retreat and end up with 3 clones (indicator says he has 3)? otherwise, all i see is an experienced player on an alt account trolling inexperienced players, which proves that people who know how to play can take advantage of people who don’t at lower levels. imho, nothing of value to see here.

He won’t be able to carry solo once he hits gold/plat. We all can easily 1v3 in low ranks, has been proven in previous seasons hence why legends started in sapphire and not in amber anymore.

I have played vs Helseth plenty of times – trust me, if he gets potatoes on team and enemy team is semi-ok, he can’t carry that.

Yes my comment is mostly in regards to people claiming they are stuck in Low Bronze and Silver saying that no one can carry no matter how skilled and any upward movement is all RNG, then they double back and claim Helseth doesn’t count since he is an ESL player, and I would love to see once Helseth reaches Gold/Plat especially since once at that level generally there are less potatoes so he shouldn’t have to carry as hard but will probably still end up carrying.

what does this prove? only that an experienced player on an alt account can take advantage of new/inexperienced players, and nothing more. although i do have a question about something i saw between 4:55-4:59 – how does helseth 1)phantasmal warlock, 2)cry of frustration, 3)phase retreat and end up with 3 clones (indicator says he has 3)? otherwise, all i see is an experienced player on an alt account trolling inexperienced players, which proves that people who know how to play can take advantage of people who don’t at lower levels. imho, nothing of value to see here.

My main is a Warrior and to be honest I don’t like it in PvP. For that I use a Thief and it is much more fun and easy to play.

P/P Thief is perfect for trolling Ragers on your team and the enemy team has a Warrior, had a match where a DH was raging on everyone while he would feed 1v3, I whispered enemy warrior to coordinate his blocks and I unload spammed him while the DH was in between us took me a few seconds to kill the DH, mind you this was off season ranked fun times… will it ever happen again? I doubt it but boy did I make that DH rage even harder.

Seeing how the Forums haven’t really been updated since 2012 and the forum creator no longer works for Anet… they could build a new forum and go from their? Possibly since they still haven’t fixed the plethora of Bugs plaguing the forums. Also I find it easier to find the Dev you are looking for and see all messages from that Dev.

In Beta Weekend 1 the Revenant had Weapon CDs iirc the UA was 10 sec CD and so on.

As already mentioned, CD’s were already on the class, and taking them off of weapons would break things terribly.

Being able to use s3 multiple times in a row would be massively OP, or SotM. Weapons need CD’s, though I think some are a bit harsh, and there are some utilities that need their CD’s removed, especially some of the high energy ones.

They weren’t there with pre-beta and betas, if I remember correctly. There might’ve been a few put in at beta-3 though. No CDs is what made the class appealing.

Also, CDs aren’t the only way to balance, so I’d disagree that they’re needed.

Partial Fix For Ranked PvP: Disincentivize It

Only one problem with your comparison between last four seasons and this season, the rewards aren’t tied behind Division like they were in the first four seasons, as long as you keep winning in ranked you get rewards regardless of your division you are in this seasons, you should never be rewarded for losing period.

Pips no longer determine Division so no pip loss is needed pips are there for rewards only nothing else.

But if that’s the case, then why would these players continue to play Ranked when they could simply do Unranked or Hotjoin instead? The simple (perhaps sad, depending on your point of view) truth is that players will ALWAYS gravitate to whatever gives them the best rewards for the least amount of time. If there are no shinies to motivate them, or if the effort to obtain them is deemed too high, they will simply abandon the area and never return. (For a good example, look at what happened to Dungeons after the reward nerf.)

The reason why ANet is even adding these rewards in the first place is to entice more players into PvP, which is probably the mode most starved for players, if matches during off-season are any indicator. (You tend to get the same players match after match.) Giving competitive players challenging, varied and fair matches is only possible if there’s a large PvP base to begin with. Without it, you end up with people in top divisions queueing for hours before a match, or highly skilled players getting matched against people far lower than them and stomping all over the competition. (Which is not satisfying for competitive players and not fun for the losing players who never had a chance.) This eventually breeds boredom and/or frustration, players quit to look for a better experience elsewhere, and it starts a domino-effect that can be nearly impossible to escape from, resulting in the death of the game mode.

I don’t think you read what I wrote or think you understand the rewards systems compared between now and the 4 previous systems. Last 4 seasons you had to progress divisions to gain rewards if you could not progress no rewards. Season 5 You gain rewards from playing matches gain rewards faster from wins slower from losses you don’t need to progress divisions.

The season 5 was a step in the right direction, but they allowed people to abuse it and afk or not even learn the game mode to get rewards, that is bad, since those extra players just AFKing or riding to easy reward win or lose don’t help the population or the grand scheme of things they actually hurt it. Moving forward if they only reward pips on wins then you get players that actually try and learn to play the game mode and since the pips are no longer tied to Division they don’t have to progress past Bronze or any other division they are in they just have to score enough wins, and side note players just there for the rewards don’t usually stay once rewards are obtained, more so for the people abusing the system and Afking.

Do you understand now?

With the current system you can have incentives for Ranked and still provide a good experience, players should never be rewarded for afking or losing, in a "competitive " gamemode, especially when those players are detrimental to others trying to progress.

I am not saying there aren’t flaws, but by your own admission you have did not have all the information only the information on three players in the match since the top two spots only have 12 games played, which means you most likely played them while they were in their placement matches which more than likely means you don’t know the Rating they had when you faced them.

And again you have no proof that they don’t place Duo Queues against higher average rated teams.

All you are doubting right now making claims without the information to back them saying it’s not working, this is why they need to make all Ratings visible so there is more transparency and we can keep Anet accountable for their Matchmaking if there is a problem, but again I am not making claims without all the satay just relaying how the system is supposed to work.

Having the Dev posts stating how their system works is more than the partial amecdotal evidence you have. All I’m saying is get all the information you can before making claims since burden of proof is on you to prove something is wrong.

Where’s your EVIDENCE as you put it? We are waiting. Post vids of your your PvP gameplay, post evidence of the Mmr hell. Go for it you just have your Opinin and no fact to back it, you say no player can carry a bronze match by them self well Helseth proved you wrong there. You say that the system is keeping you in Bronze below your supposed skill level still haven’t seen any proof from you showing as such. Everything I have stated has been either backed by Dev statements or the actions of other players that post videos. Funny how that works.

I’ve seen Gold 2 players who are absolutely clueless. Is this just them trolling who freaking knows. However, it’s pathetic how stupid some of them “pvpers” actually are. They have no map awareness at all, they can’t even focus targets. Some of this has to be actual trolls, perhaps even “pro” players taking a break just to kitten around. Some could even be Anet or those close to them. When you are winning in a match and then watch as everything falls about and the players just start giving away control points, and grouping all on home etc it does make you wonder.

We all know the “pros” make multiple accounts to keep themselves at the top. Some do this and admit they do to troll the lower ranking ones. We all know Anet doesn’t want their pride and joy “pro” players actually losing to other players because it’ll make them look like kittenes. Is it any wonder why they took out allowing the top teams to try and compete to get into the pro level? The pro teams are on Anet’s payroll, that money they “win” just gets funneled back into the system. It’s an elitist club and they don’t want to lose any power.

Should just call it Guild Boxing 2, it’s as corrupt as that industry was when Don King led the charge. Complete BS, so either play the grind or don’t, it’s rigged.

My friends list panned out exactly how I thought it would: With the good players getting high ratings and the ones I knew were not so good getting lower ones. If the good players I knew were good got placed lower they’ve pushed themselves out of it and have a much higher rating now. While the ones towards the bottom/middle are the ones constantly complaining about their teams. It’s so predictable, I can’t believe there’s anyone that takes you seriously here anymore.

No you are not saying how the system works, you are saying how you think it works.

When you have 2 players with MMR at around 4,000 and then 3 players at less then 4700.

Without knowing the rest and taking the final score into account no its a issue.

Also bringing in peak times/off peaks has nothing to do with +/- of the winning and losing of matches.

We both agree that both teams MMR should be shown but you are trying to explain something with generalities that are not even true.

There were many forum pics of 2-2-1 teams dominating 1-1-1-1-1 teams so even your last sentences are only assumed and not factual.

Off peak does explain the huge differences in losses and wins since the player pool is so small during those times the system struggles to balance teams one side can be grossly lopsided. Also there are lots of forum pics showing 1-1-1-1-1 teams dominating 2-2-1 teams interesting how that works. the system punishes Duo Queues as stated by Devs. My “generalities” are back by Dev statements yours are not.

Im taking into account my games and the other peoples comments.

For instance on the thread from a top 5 player. Multiple people from the top 10 said they only duo que.

In the thread about God of PvP is a joke they duo que.

Also the win % is nothing i have multiple friends with 20 win -10 losses 20 wins 8 losses and there rank is under 1600 which once again brings up the system and match making.

Yeah I did say that want to know why it’s dumb not to Duo Queue? It’s called communication and coordination more times than not having players able to communicate properly and coordinate surpasses the Mmr boost they are given especially if the players are anywhere near competent at the game mode… oh my god logic….

And what if the Mmr of the other 3 teammates on your team? If the averages are lower you lose more it doesn’t matter about your rating only the averages of the teams. Also try to back your claims with proof it builds a better argument.

So if someone has 2 accounts, 1 in bronze and 1 in legendary, where does that player belong?

Need more info than that because a player can place in Legendary doesn’t mean they belong there, same with Bronze. Then that questions goes even further into the hypothetical which is of no use discussing.
