What happened to all our Chill?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Captain Unusual.9163

Captain Unusual.9163

Right now, the Reaper’s two strongest conditions are Vulnerability and Poison. When the Reaper was originally revealed, it was meant to be a master of chill, with a huge chill application on its auto attack, and chaining chill explosions from Chilling Nova. But now, our GS1 chill dropped from kitten to 1.75s, and Chilling Nova went from 3 procs per 15s down to once per 15s. And, of course, Chilling Darkness got its huge nerf a few weeks ago, presumably in anticipation of the Reaper. I find myself not even bothering to try to chill my targets when playing as Reaper, since we have such poor access to it now. The middle line of our specialization is basically useless, because we have such lousy chill application now.

I think the worst part about the Reaper is actually the fact that it’s so kitten fun to play. Every single ability and trait is cool and I want to use it, it’s just, aside from Reaper’s Shroud, not actually fulfilling the fantasy that it was designed with. If it weren’t fun to play, I wouldn’t care that it wasn’t good, but it is really fun, and that makes it hurt.

Please, let me have fun without being a burden on my group. It’s all I ask.

wasn’t this trait the reason they nerfed our chilling darkness and chills in general in addition to nerfing the chill on gs?

Now that I think about it, were any parts of the Reaper not nerfed from the reveal livestream?

Shouts Are Bad

in Necromancer

Captain Unusual.9163

Gonna have to agree here. I have found that when traited the shout heal has a 12 second cd when u hit 5 targets so it can actually be up like everytime i come out of shroud. Other than that. The might doesnt stick long enough on your all weaklings. Rise only summons one horror per target this is even worse than seek and destroy shout which i never thought was possible. Suffer chill is to short. Unblockable time is to short as well. Most these shouts give u time do get off all of like 1 attack in the time of the chill/unblockable/might lasts.
Last you need to trait for shouts again to get the reduced cooldowns and give up relentless pursuit which is honestly like better than the new crappy gm reaper traits.

What the hell are you doing during the 5-9 seconds of unblockability that you can only get one attack off?

Oh wait…

Anyway, condescension aside, I don’t really expect ANet to nerf these things or make it easier on us. They’re well aware of the fact that current PvE is way too easy and unengaging, and the new stuff was designed specifically to be more difficult. For them to decide to make it easier, they’d need to, for no real reason, decide to suddenly go against their players’ wishes and their own design goals.

Captain Unusual.9163

With Decimate Defenses and Deathly Perception, you can have 100%+ crit chance while wearing no precision gear. This lets us wear Valkyrie gear, for POWER/ferocity/vitality.

And oh my god does it work well in the new areas. Now that enemies are actually a bit tougher, the survivability from having 32k health helps a lot, and RS still has 100% crit chance, and about 58% crit chance outtside of RS.

It’s amazing fun.

Reaper and ranged?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Captain Unusual.9163

Captain Unusual.9163

Definitely staff. It has a powerful aoe chill on its 3 skill, an aoe condition transfer that will always be useful no matter how you’re specced, and a short aoe fear. Plus a bit of life force gen on auto attacks, though I don’t think that’ll be very significant. The only other real useful option is axe/warhorn. Both warhorn skills are incredibly useful for the Reaper, and the axe is just a bit less useless for reaper than scepter, I think, due purely to it’s 3 skill.

[Reaper] The Dagger Dilemma

in Necromancer

Captain Unusual.9163

Dagger really needs to focus more on being the fast, lifestealing weapon. Its attacks come incredibly rapidly, and proc Vampiric and Vampiric Presence incredibly well, especially the 2 ability. If dagger 2 were changed to be a bit faster, and dagger 3 were changed to also give swiftness when used, it could still find use as a highly mobile, high healing lifesteal weapon, while letting Greatsword be slower, with higher dps.

How can necro be "fixed" in PvE?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Captain Unusual.9163

Captain Unusual.9163

The way to fix Necro in PvE is to fix PvE overall. In a different PvE landscape that didn’t involve stacking, Necromancer could potentially shine a lot more. A well designed Necro, with fixes to the things we need fixed, and a better PvE that more appropriately highlights the combat in GW2 could suit Necromancers very well, the problem right now is Necro is much more focused on preventing players from reaching full power, yet most mobs ignore this.

This is correct. The problem is that Necromancers are very good at a lot of things, but the things they’re very good at aren’t things that are needed in the current pve design.

Captain Unusual.9163

I really agree with pretty much all of this, except that your new Fear of Death idea is pretty op. And we don’t need to both make Life Blast fire super fast and buff Dhuumfire, one or the other would be balanced.

And Axe Training should really give some entirely different bonus than just bonus damage. It should be something that actually synergizes with the axe skills, not just “take this for extra damage”. Your Spiteful Talisman idea would actually be a perfect axe trait if it had a boon strip on its auto attack.

I´ve ran across a sad fact – I want to build a unusual build for my engineer that would require Zealot gear. However, to get the gear, I would have to spend at least 100 gold for recipes that can not be got from anywhere but Trading Post.
I do see no reason why is there such a difference in getting i.e. Knigh´s gear and Zealot gear. In my opinion this dumps the diversity of playstyles alot and I dont see a reason for this.
Is this actually intent for some gear to be “harder to get” or is it just caused by the game evolving? Would there be a chance for anything to be done about it?

Its not so much the intent, as it is a side of affect how they were added. All the prefixes associated with Living Story events have all had some kind of problem with their addition. For the early ones, it was exclusivity to the event; The reason their scare is because the required sources are no longer available. Zealots got off easy because watch work picks from the gem store can give them for normal mining…… if not for that, it would had been worse.

The Season 2 additions are all account bound, and the ascended versions often gated behind Living story achievements.

To that extent, the new Prefixes are effectively fluff- with the occasional prefix (like Zealots and Sentinels) finding use in rare situations. They could fix the situation easily by reintroducing the mats and recipes through other, stable areas of the game. But so far, at best, they end up as Laural items as a way to promote the NPC itself.

When is Sentinel’s useful?

And don’t forget Sinister, which is actually better than Zerk for a couple classes.

Captain Unusual.9163

So, basically, the consensus here is that new players shouldn’t have it, because you want something to hold over their heads and say “look how much better I am than you”. Got it.

Exclusivity based on skill or content completion can be a good thing. Exclusivity based on whether someone was able to play during two specific weeks is not. Having them doesn’t mean you did anything memorable or impressive. I have the wings and don’t even remember what I had to do to get them. I didn’t realize till now that they weren’t at the laurel vendors, but now that I know that it makes me sad, because I have a friend who wasn’t playing then who quite likes them. And now I need to tell him that he can never get them, for no good reason whatsoever.

Kralkatorrik - When?

Humans = Zhaitan
Sylvari = Mordremoth
Norn = Jormag
Charr = Primordus
Asura = Bubbles (albeit indirectly through their research)

Browhat

Each dragon did do more against one particular race, but you got all of them but Norn wrong.

Humans had their three empires separated by Bubbles, as they were only accessible by sea.
Sylvari cherish life in all its forms which is the opposite of undeath, and most of their Wyld Hunts were against Zhaitan or his minions, the player Sylvari included.
Yeah, Norn got kittened by Jormag.
Charr had Kralk wake up in the Blood Legion homeland, and then when he flew south, he turned huge swathes of their land into the Dragonbrand.
And the Asura were driven to the surface solely due to Primordus.

Mordremoth showed up later, and yes, it does target Sylvari more than the others, but at launch, Zhaitan was the Sylvari’s nemesis dragon.

I want to make it Sylvari, since I don’t have a heavy Sylvari yet and their heavy cultural armor looks great. But I also want to make it Charr, because I just love everything about Charr.

But I also already have three Sylvari, two Charr, two Norn, one Asura, and no humans, so I should probably make it a human so I can at least see their story.

I typically try to avoid making humans in fantasy games, since they’re always the most boring race to be.

in Necromancer

Posted by: Captain Unusual.9163

Captain Unusual.9163

Our lack of group buffing is mostly in exchange for extremely powerful self buffs; it’s very easy to reach and maintain max might stacks on ourselves with no real effort. I wonder, perhaps, if the might cap went the way of the bleed cap, if we’d become more useful and desired in pve, since we’d actually have high enough dps to make up for our lack of party support, and our own might stacking wouldn’t be overwritten by the groupwide buffs.

The writers did know about Mordremoth at the time, but he certainly wasn’t relevant to that. Zhaitan, moreso than any other dragon, turns allies against each other. The reason it was so deadly when Mordremoth did it is because it was unexpected.

Why we love Necros: Sense and Sens-ability

in Necromancer

Posted by: Captain Unusual.9163

Captain Unusual.9163

ITT: a bunch of people don’t know the difference between design and balance.

The design of the class is very solid. The class, as a whole, has well defined strengths and weaknesses, with all of its tools (aside from axe) being fairly useful no matter how you build or play, even moreso now that conditions got fixed and vuln works on conditions. The class has a very strong theme (slow, durable, better at keeping someone in a fight than escaping from one, powerful but selfish buffs) and that central theme is a heavy part of every single skill and weapon.

The balance isn’t too great, because the pve meta is so broken that it rewards burst damage, fire fields and blast finishers, aoe might, reflects, and literally nothing else. None of those things are things that the necromancer (or ranger) are meant to be good at. And that’s fine. The problem lies with the horrendous encounter design, not the necromancer’s design. Hopefully, since HoT is planned to alleviate the uselessness of both durability and non-might-stacking support, the necromancer’s strengths will actually be able to shine.

Protection is really good, but it is not as good as Devs seem to think it is. (Look at guardian shield 4, which is probably the only bad weapon skill they have).

Anyways the fear wasn’t there at launch and that’s the main reason to use the skill, even if it is trivial to avoid in a fight (except in WvW AOE soup). Sometimes I take it just for the field. (Cast it on the Svanir shaman and watch him spike up to 30 stacks of confusion after).

Spectral Wall will never be a pvp or dungeon useable skill.

It’s actually not terrible in pvp, I’ve found. It’s useful for defending points against very mobile classes, like thieves or elementalists.

Great question, especially since we already have so many other sources of protection compared to stability.

Here is another question, why is spectral wall a line and not a ring? it is supposed to be a combo field, so since when was a combo “field” a straight line in the ground. I never really used it much so it never really occurred to me. Now it has, it is quite irritating to think about.

Why is Line of Warding a line and not a ring?? Why is Temporal Curtain a line and not a ring? Why is Flamewall a line and not a ring? Since when is a fire field a line of fire? That doesn’t make any sense!

That album show a graph for each condition type, where the lines intersect is the break even point.

Also, check this topic: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Math-Condition-Damage-Old-vs-New

It’s important to note that this graph has the wrong formula for bleed and torment, so those charts are wrong. The formula given in the preview, which this graph uses, was not what made it into the actual game, as shown by the patch notes and testing. Bleed’s break-even point is 2050 condi damage. But is around 600 or so with max vulnerability stacks.

Idea on A Corrosive Condition for structures

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Captain Unusual.9163

Captain Unusual.9163

Lord knows why Burning doesn’t work.

After all these dragon attacks, not to mention the Flame Legion ravaging the world, the Tyrian Building Code mandates that all structures be specially treated with a mild fire kittenant, preventing them from catching fire. The Code only requires a relatively cheap treatment, so powerful bursts of flame can still cause damage to many structures, but they will not combust except in extreme circumstances.
