Thanks for coming out to OS for the GvG support. The number of spectators were insane, I even had a queue to get in and play! I’m not the voice of the GvG community but it seemed to mean a lot to us to see some Anet representation there.

Simply standing there swapping servers was blowing people’s minds. Good times!

I had a blast last night. That was a fun event to be sure. I’ll be back for more!

You should come watch a GvG on a borderland when the OS is being used. Might be fun times, so to speak.

But it would have to be a HOME bl that is queued for sparks to really fly….

Not always! There’s the rare third server griefing too.

An argument for raid-scale PvP

in PvP

Posted by: Chaba.5410

Chaba.5410

(Posting a new thread because Fallen’s topic title is ambiguous and I want this post to be read and not buried in an older thread.)

The strongest argument for adding a raid-scale PvP feature is the core game design philosophy of Guild Wars 2.

Making a social game was part of the original Guild Wars 2 design philosophy.

Here I’ll quote:
“MMOs are social games. So why do they sometimes seem to work so hard to punish you for playing with other players? If I’m out hunting and another player walks by, shouldn’t I welcome his help, rather than worrying that he’s going to steal my kills or consume all the mobs I wanted to kill? Or if I want to play with someone, shouldn’t we naturally have the same goals and objectives, rather than discovering that we’re in the same area but working on a different set of quests?”

The manifesto goes on to describe WvW:
“We even redesigned the competitive part of the game to be friendly like this. Now worlds can compete against each other, through the mists that separate them, for scarce resources that benefit an entire world. … You don’t have to join a party to join the fight. All you have to do is get out there and start helping. Everyone has the same objective, and if your world can get 501 people working for the same goal, that’s only going to be more helpful than 500 people.”

Think about how sPvP players are given “Custom Arena”, “Unranked”, and “Ranked” options in order to self-select their PvP goals. Players in a “Custom Arena”, for example, can naturally have the same PvP goal as other players in that same arena. Now clearly WvW is a sandbox PvP environment because it does not have any self-select mechanism. It allows players to PvP in a manner that is not consistent with the idea of everyone having the same objective.

Recently Anet identified one of those areas of WvW where the objective was not consistent, something that put players at odds with each other, and they announced a change to that. To me it looked like Anet was making the game more closely align with the game’s design philosophy.:

“Players no longer have to worry about taking supply from an objective while another player is waiting to have enough supply to upgrade it. Players also won’t have to worry about making an upgrade decision that other players may not like or feel like they’re the only person spending gold to upgrade objectives.”

Separating the Obsidian Sanctum was a good first step yet because the demand is greater than the supply, players are still punished for playing with others. Players with naturally different objectives queue up borderland maps. Then they blame each other when a keep is lost or can’t be captured back and end up harassing each other in multiple ways, giving each other bad names – like harassing a player for taking supply or ordering the wrong upgrade. How could this result not be inevitable when player goals and objectives are naturally different rather than naturally the same?

So this discussion needs to be about making the game more closely align with its design philosophy. As long as there is no ability to have some sort of raid-scale, instanced PvP outside of WvW that meets demand – be that through guild halls or a mega-server OS or whatever – WvW players will never feel that they naturally have the same goals and objectives as other WvW players.

I personally had an issue figuring out how to activate training a mastery. Initially I assumed you had to click on one of the actual skills, which I’ll admit was rather daft, but making it more clear you need to click the circle/check up top to enable training could be nice.

You’re not the only one. The first Glider mastery was flashing but locked and unclickable so that made it extra confusing.

What do you think upgrade order should be?

in WvW

Posted by: Chaba.5410

Chaba.5410

Yea, the order depends on the situation.

When a server has forces out, when they basically outnumber the enemy, the best choice is to rush the waypoint because you have forces that can defend it.

When you don’t have a force to defend, your server usually needs more time to respond to a defense event. Having upgraded walls and gates first tend to provide that time over rushing a waypoint.

But also keep in mind that not everyone knows the optimal situational strategy and they may order walls and gates before the waypoint. Then everyone gets mad about it.

Yes, people get mad, but then the strategy gets explained and everyone learns something.

Losing the ability to tailor your upgrades to your situation — a big loss.

OK, the livestream showed that all upgrade tracks go at the same time. I’m cool with it.

It was clearly stated in the blog post that they would upgrade at the same time so it shouldn’t have came as a surprise.

This is a bad change. It hurts the players that only play the game for WvW.

As a player who has been playing WvW basically since launch and still spends the majority of my game time playing WvW, I support the removal of guard stacks. They were unnecessary when added, they are still unnecessary and only punish players who haven’t yet reached 330 WXP ranks. It also rewards karma farmers in EOTM who aren’t really WvW players, but PvE players trying to grind rank. The buffs did nothing to encourage players to play WvW.

IMHO that’s to be expected after the extreme glicko cliff that was occurring between T2 and T3 matches for so long. The lack of a spring season meant that no shake up could occur and the entire system is allowed to stabilize. It will continue for awhile until players get tired of it and as long as T2 guilds don’t start engaging in the cross-server match-fixing that T1 does.

A guildmate and I discussed this subject tonight. We considered the terms “Spy”, “Saboteur”, and “Agent Provocateur”.

We didn’t feel that “Spy” was enough to warrant being called match manipulation. Too many players jokingly use the term about each other and engage in some form of information feeding without malicious intent. “Saboteur” and “Agent Provocateur” on the other hand could be used to define types of match manipulation behavior.

True, maybe they could lock your IP into a server world each week. Like after reset the first one you log into your IP is locked into that server for that week. I mean, even locking it so you just can’t be on two servers that were fighting each other would fix the problem.

No. You’ll be punishing players like myself, or ones I know, certain streamers even, who play with multiple guilds on different servers in the same match even who don’t even play like the people you are trying to restrict.

Don’t agree. Tournaments created an artificially high WvW population that is not sustainable. That makes any ranking a false predictor of normal performance, worse than the current glicko system.

Servers go full as long as Anet doesn’t raise the cap and that will funnel new players naturally.

He was talking to me, presumably because it hurts his feelings that I don’t read reddit or every server isn’t lockstep with what some reddit groupthink came up with. Oh noes some servers can think for themselves and have.. gasp.. come up with with their own rules! Don’t go catching the vapors on me now.

This sounds like some great reading! How does one mind their own business if they get kicked from something? Don’t you have to be part of someone’s business in order to be kicked from it?

Multiple accounts and WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Chaba.5410

Chaba.5410

I picked up a second account in Summer of 2013 during a 50% off sale to play on. At the time, most people I knew who had multiple accounts used them to spy and didn’t invest any time in leveling. I got a bunch of low-AP spy accounts in my contact list that haven’t been logged into in ages. It only seems more common now because more people are open to disclose they have multiple accounts. The $10 sales help too!

But thats not the only consequence, there are others so let’s find out how serious the problem is:

When you say multiple accounts is a problem, my response as always is, “Don’t violate my game mode.” It is the closest thing to having open world PvP without spending a lot on transfer fees. Having multiple accounts doesn’t mean someone is doing something nefarious with them. There’s nothing functionally different from a single account transferring to another server to spy.

  • How frequent is that now, i.e. do YOU have accounts on multiple worlds? (So far I don’t, but I am thinking about having 1 account for EU and 1 for NA)
  • If yes: on how many different worlds?

My first account is currently on Borlis Pass and I use it to tour the various servers in order to get a wider perspective of WvW without relying on just what others say about it. My second account is on Fort Aspenwood, the server that I began this game on. I recently picked up a third account solely to play in EU because I miss it from when I had my first account there.

  • And for how many different worlds do you play WvW?

All of them.

  • How do you decide for which world do you play?

Fort Aspenwood is the server I began the game in and still have a lot of friends on. So I regularly play WvW on Fort Aspenwood.

  • Did it happen that you had accounts on different servers of the same match?

Yes. That’s the open world PvP part. You get to fight against people you know and sometimes that is more fun than fighting anonymous people.

  • Do you have any server loyalty?

Yes.

  • Do you have several computer and did you used your multiple accounts for spying or even trolling?

It is a stupid question because even single account owners can use their account for spying and trolling.

  • Do you have a “Nomad”-account, i.e. use it for free-tranfer by deleting all chars in it?

No, but I know some players who do this and they are single account owners.

  • Should we have a tournament again, how will you decide for which world you play?

Every world I have an account on.

And looking into the future:

  • How will WvW work in the future if very many will have accounts on many worlds?

The same way it does now. You are forgetting the guild factor. Players will play most on the world where their guild is. Or they will at least be playing with their guild during rally times, which is what even single account owners do.

  • Will multiple-accounts increase the fair-weather-play phenomena?

Not anymore than they have since launch. The quality/state of WvW has way more effect on whether players fair-weather than the number of accounts they have.

  • How stable will the ranking/matchmaking be, if many players switch the team often?

Entire guilds transfer during tournaments. You’re considering the wrong source of players switching teams.

  • Do transfer costs more than twice as high than a new account make sense?

Yes. New accounts haven’t built up any value. You essentially start from scratch and have to go through all the crafting, trait unlocking, dailies, etc. all over again. For a lot of veteran players it is far easier to buy another character slot than do all that work again. I almost didn’t get an account for EU because of all that work. So the fact that it costs almost nothing to get a new account helps remove some of that pain.

Coglin, it’s just a waste of your time to respond to the OP. The OP has rapidly gained a reputation on FA for being exactly the way you describe. Did you know he called out several guilds for not being on TS in order to prove some point he was trying to make about communication yet when he looked at TS was a time those guilds do not have their rallies?

I mean it is fine if he doesn’t want to be on TS. There’s plenty of legitimate reasons to not be on TS. Like, I have a guild member who is deaf so TS doesn’t really do anything for that player. Incidentally that player will join TS sometimes just to read the TS chat messages! But I digress.

It’s a good chance you’re being trolled in this thread.

IDK how the system works, but IMHO it would be pretty kitten to design a system that did not exclude excessively inactive accounts from total population calculations. So I’m gonna take a guess and say that such accounts are already excluded from the calculation because 1) we know from Anet that they are constantly monitoring and adjusting the cap and 2) a bunch of servers went Full again as long-time inactive players logged back in after HoT hype and then opened up a bit again as more accounts went inactive.

The problem with that mentality is that this is a casual game, and design to be so. It has a concept designed around the idea that players are welcome to take time off and come and go as they please.

Consider the opposite: underutilized servers because excessively inactive accounts are never removed from the calculation and server communities could never get new accounts. New accounts go where?

On the underpopulated and underutilized servers of the players in this thread, who are complaining that they have a lack of server population?

Thou earlier in this thread, I suggested the value (if it isn’t how it is done already) to not count the accounts who haven’t played in 2 years.

A lot of those servers historically had higher populations, and they didn’t lose them just from server transfers. Take SoR for example. It continued to have a very high population on its fall before Season 2. It didn’t lose those accounts to transfers. Counting that inactive population means that new accounts could not go there either.

It’s not a zoomhack. It’s a setting in your game client. If you aren’t going to have counter-siege and scouts, of course you are going to lose your T3 garri. It happens even without the larger FOV.

And what? Engies were the most nerfed class? That is simply not true. If i had to pick the most heavy nerfed class would probably be warrior, and will probably be just a matter of time before the class is killed entirely when they nerf cleansing ire.

Well we weren’t inspired to start Fort Warrior [NERF] for a warrior enthusiast guild.
