New accounts get above average MMR? Why so many seem to think this? I’ve played fresh MMR and witnessed people dying to bosses and quad capping in Amber. I’m certainly not playing with top players on the first night of a new account, that’s for sure.

You disagree so confidently and claim starter MMR is ‘above average’, when you see all sorts of wonky builds and rotations, not to mention it’s a fricken invisible number.

If skill didn’t matter, everybody could get a fresh account, granting them above average MMR, and ride to legend, according to you. Those that believe this, and think your final placement is limited by your MMR at the start, I think the salt has seeped into their brains.

Have to agree with Chaith as an exception. I am not exactly best player out there but i have seen really bad stuff done by my teams in lower divisions, on the other hand i was also able to win 1v2 fights on vanilla thief vs players using meta classes/builds in lower divisions – that just says the quality of players there in generally.

I personally think there couple issues that cause major grief:
- up to ruby player doesn’t lose divisions, meaning if by some chance trolls/bad players/afkers etc. managed to get to mid/higher divisions they stay there instead of getting moved to low divisions. So ruby is flooded with all kind of players.

- the matchmaking always creates 1 winning team and 1 losing team, it actually doesn’t try to create even matches (even in legend/diamond matches are often way too lopsided). I think they should have just based entire matchmaking on division/pip range with maybe minimal MMR weighting.

- we all start in same division, meaning first weeks less experienced players gets farmed non stop. Placement matches would fix it imo.

- a lot of QQ comes from players being spoiled by season 1. In season 1 matchmaking was based pretty much purely on MMR, meaning a guy with low MMR could get all the way to legend having easy fights (the matchmaking tried to force everyone into 50% winrate) while players with high MMR had to win matches vs pro players just to get out of emerald.
This turned leagues in nothing else but glorified reward track. It gave average Joe illusion that he deserves to be in diamond/legend and have wings. Reality is, take any high competitive game (sup LoL) and majority of players actually camp low divisions whole season and never move higher- that is normal, not the welfare, anyone-can-be-legend system like gw2 leagues.

- i would really appreciate if Anet added no-pip-lost feature for close matches. Current system motivates players to afk if first minute of the match didn’t go well.

Annoying Skills

Precision strike: goes through walls, around the wall, ignores range limit, low CD, high dmg, no target required, goes through normal dodges (need dash to completely avoid it).

Any kind of revealed applied by engi and rev: binary crappy designed hardcounter on classes that didn’t need those spells.

Druid: Ancestral Grace – woohoo let’t give bunker/bruiser RTL on short CD while pet dishes out zerker dmg on you.

Mesmer: double moa, clones/phantasm running at 200+% speed.

Scrapper: whole hammer design, stupid, 0 common sense was involved when this weapon set was designed, just plain bias.

Generally abundance of passives and aoe on short CDs.

No punishment for afkers/griefers

Reporting DOES work, but you need more reports for it to work, and most people won’t report because they don’t see any specific option for it, or think it does nothing.

And so we have players who keep cheating and griefing going at it without repercussions.

Reporting doesn’t work. I queue into same ppl all the time, every day and i don’t see them being punished even though i reported them. Fun fact: don’t you dare to leave any tiny comment about Anet job, you get insta 2 weeks bann on forums slapped in your face. But hundret of players griefing other is no problem apparently.

Thieves used to be able to 1v1 fairly well and participate in team fights. Anets idea behind all nerfs in 3 years was: oh thieves are so mobile and do high single target dmg, they should be squishy and useless in 1v1. Then they threw any common sense and their own logic out of window and made revs.

You can make thief works in current meta but it requires a lot of experience ( you need to be by mile better player than anyone in the match, you also have to rely on your team to survive in team fights) and frankly not worth it if you got rev anyway.^The class is legitimately middle finger from Anet to every thief player out there.

Getting ‘stuck’ in ruby is a very important topic regarding how best league should operate. We changed matchmaking to make the ladder more prestigious and so far it has done that. Divisions are aligning with skill level much better than season 1. The product of this change is that the bulk of players who hover around the middle of the mmr curve should stay in sapphire and ruby. Win rate will level out at 50% because there are plentiful players of similar mmr in the same division.

Should average players be able to climb out of the middle divisions by grinding? This removes prestige and can make matchmaking worse within a division, but always allows a sense of progression.

Should average players stay in the middle divisions because that’s where they belong at their skill level? This retains prestige and only improving skill will allow climbing, but rewards and progression stop at some point through the season.

Is there an incentive that could be added to league games for players who have reached their appropriate division and can no longer climb?

I love how leagues became more about skills but there is still huge flaw.
Make matchmaking based on divisions/pips. Add placements matches at begin of the season to more “better” players to upper divisions. Right now matchmaking just causes a lot of lopsided matches, even in diamond and legend. Those are hardly fun for either team.

No matter what divisions you are in, you will be always either on totally winning or totally losing team. Nothing in between.

I agree. Its not that 2 teefs is actually THAT bad. Its the fact that both refused to switch which tends to be indicative of their lack of skill. Tends to mean they don’t care about winning and want to be carried.

Some people play for fun. You know, games are meant to be played for fun. Some people rather play thief and have fun than force themselves to play something they don’t enjoy.
inb4 go do unranked etc. Unranked has skyhammer, no ty. Besides even ranked are just pixels, nothing more.

I have won plenty of games with double thief. It has nothing to do with team carrying or not, it has something to do with team actually changing their strategy instead of spending whole match at spawn and blaming thieves.

Fun fact: today i had a match, we ended up with 2 thieves on team (me and other guy). The team kept blaming us for not doing well etc.

Then we split during the match, me and thief were fighting 2v2 at far and our team had 3v2 fight at home (5th enemy was at mid). Our team at home managed to wipe. They had “proper” classes, were outnumbering enemy and yet they managed to wipe. CLEARLY sole reason why we lost that match is because of double thief…. el oh el.

Legend Queue Times

Matchmaking doesn’t count pips past the end of legendary, so prestige count won’t affect queue times.

It was said already, but with an accurate or prestigious ladder you get people on each extreme with long queue times as the population to pull from is smaller. Queue times in unranked are never this bad because we expand the mmr search range quite far over time. We could do the equivalent expansion of the ladder search range, but there will be just as many (if not more) people then complaining about all the legendary players in their ruby matches.

To summarize the issues people have brought up:
An accurate ladder rewards skill at the cost of queue time.
Reducing queue time would require frustrating players with imbalanced matches (either by skill, or just visual ladder badge).
Making the ladder more about grind gets more players to legendary, but there is no prestige.

What would make legendary players happy to keep playing the game? Is it just quicker queue times? What if you could do other things while waiting? What if there was something other than leagues all together like unranked arena that legendary players could go to until more players make it to legendary?

Matchmaking should be based on divisions and pips alone not MMR, otherwise you have actually decent players forced to carry really bad teams against bad odds and taking longer times to get in higher divisions. I know couple of people who shouldn’t be in low divisions right now but they are.

premade = weight in the glicko system. It will attempt to balance the match by giving your opponents better teammates. I never had any problem vs any of the premades I have faced so far.

Bots / Afkers / Ragekids will happen in any other game. I still stand on players losing division / tier in any division. They should probably add more pips to each division and design them so when you do cross a division you start at 10% pips and if you lose a division you start at 60% into it.

fun fact: when i played with 3-5 man premade we had a lot of close matches
when i play solo or duo: it is mostly very lopsided matches (regardless in which side favor)

I don’t understand why everyone has so much trouble with revs in 1v1’s. most revs for me are a cakewalk. And DH aren’t that hard to beat either my initial burst drops em to 10-20%hp then as they go to heal pistol 4 or use the steal skill you just got from them. Then if their traps are proc’d as you hit them, dodge/shadow step out and wait till they go away. Once the traps are gone DH’s shouldn’t be able to handle you. And true shot should be easy to dodge. Fighting dh is just placement and timing (element of surprise helps too)

Get to legend, try to play thief vs pro rev. Or try to get on any team as a thief atm. Chances are even if you get a team, they will tell you to reroll rev. Issue is rev took all the jobs thieves/wars could have. There is 0 reason to take thief on team when rev exists in their current state. Same reason why you have more impact on match outcome even in soloq as rev compared to thief.

As rev you can:
- rotate just about as fast as thief (hello +1 role)
- do more dmg than thief
- help teammates (boon aura, epic rez), thieves have like 0 team support atm besides trickery boon share and lol refuge
- hold point, even vs multiple enemies (thief can’t do it)
- actually win 1v1 fights vs equaly skilled player

Annnndddd revs were given revealed on 20 sec CD which, along with scrapper one, pretty much forced every thief into DD. A cat randomly running over keyboard can do better at class balance.

We are not talking about revs here. they will eventually face the same nerfs we have, given that they receive the same hate. But revs are supposed to be more of a support option, at least the whole herald tree is. Rev is also more of a team fighter, using heavy armor and boons.

While having mobility of a thief basically. Thieves are ok, revs and scrappers to extend just shut the class down too much.

No matter how amazing you are on thief, you could absolutely better and have more impact on match by playing rev. Simple as it is. Anet excused all the nerfs to thief for 3 years straight with +1/mobility. Then they simply throw their own logic out of the window and create rev that can fill thief role way better, live longer than most classes, does more dmg, has multiple hardcounters to thief specifically, etc. Revs are walking middle finger for thief players from balancing team.

Make a thief, try to use sb 5, steal or shadowstep anywhere on map. 90% of the time it fails due to NO VALID PATH bug. The map is real garbage, whoever made it didn’t keep in mind classes that rely on teleport spells.

Holes with glass need to go.

Platform with cannon needs to be way bigger and person using teleport to cannon platform should be invulnerable for a sec so they don’t load into being feared off the edge.

Bottom line: map made for griefing/trolling will never be enjoyable for majority of players. Delete it.

… that nothing is done about afkers. Reporting for botting does nothing. I see same ppl all the time, every day, afking in matches on purpose. GW2 is only game i know where griefing is not only punished but almost motivated (no punishment for exploiting last season, no punishment for afking in 3.5 years of this game).

Last season i had lovely experience of being told to uninstall, quit game, kill myself, called all possible names because i played certain class. I think i reported countless players for such verbal abuse. NOTHING was done.

On the other hand, make a tiny comment about Anet on forums and you get instant 2 weeks bann slapped into your face. Simply glorious.

i didnt even feel like i rushed it, i took my time while doing the 3 daily matches for backpiece

well the only thing i can suggest is to do unranked i guess until more people hit legend

it will take time, ruby is a huge bottleneck atm, especially due to new matchmaking, it gonna take a while till queues in legend are reasonable

I gave up on soloqing at the end of ruby. The matches are so lopsided it is not even funny. And it doesn’t get any better in diamond. You either lose 50-500 or win 500-50. Neither is fun. Teaming with other people actually gives you more balanced matches.

Generally bad rotations, i have won games where we were behind by 300 pts (since we lost all team fights) due to bad rotation from enemy at the end. I have lost a lot of games because nobody defends and team just rotates really bad (chasing 1 guy at mid with 4 ppl while home is getting zerged etc.)

This game really needs sound for map pings (like in league) because i have a feeling most ppl just don’t look at map. Ever.

It’s funny. Moa exists since the beginning of the game. Nobody complained about it for the past 3 years. And now bunch of baddies want a nerf to a class that has only one viable.

This looks and sounds like the complains that pushed thief out of meta so hard that it can’t get back up. The june update last year. Everybody was complaining about stealth and how it has no counter play and boom. ANet answered and made the class freaking obsolete.

Keep up the good work guys. Soon we’ll have 5on5 necro fights or some stupid comp like that.

If you know how to kite, you can kite just as well with the moa. But that requires wits.

While we are at it remove the moa from the engi and turn that elixir x useless so that every engi could run a stealth gyro.

Which btw is infinitely better than thieves shadow refuge.

P.S: @Rodzynald – People are stupid and they don’t look. At least in ruby t4. I can open the fight with a moa and the enemies won’t evne bother to dodge.

This whole thing is a l2p issue. Maybe some of you don’t want mesmers in their comp because outside of moa its kinda useless and/or revenant fairs better in everything else. But you’re going to have to make use of one.

Actually that is wrong, there have been complains about moa SINCE launch, moa just became stupidly strong due to CD reset and current power creep introduced with HoT.

So do you agree that a slight tone down of power/condi output would balance the scales? I see no reason in butchering an ability because everyone else is super jacked up

i see no reason why anyone should be able to cast such borderline OP spell 2 times in a row

don’t think that condi output from mes initially is a bad thing, condi mes should be doing dmg after all

issue lies within certain traits and additional perks, a lot of them come from chrono ability to reset CDs and just generally nature of condi dmg relying on one one stat while direct dmg relies on 2 (it would require own thread i am afraid)

there is no denial, current shatter mes isn’t doing well, thing is i do believe all elites need massive nerfs, i think mes and quite few other classes (thief, war and co.) would have better standing then

You know, it’s funny. Both the Chrono moa and Engi moa can be cast twice in a row.

Anyways, sure Moa is strong but consider some things first. In a 1v1, you know when it is coming most the time and can at least dodge it. In a group fight, you can escape as moa. If you can’t escape, then that is because you are being focused and you would of died even if you weren’t moa’d. If you happen to play something that wouldn’t die even if focused by enemy team, well then moa was made exactly for your class and you deserved to be moa’d.

P.S. – I do not play Mesmer.

You can’t escape moa cast by condi mes due to immob. Only classes that can are with passive condi removal and immob removal on dodge.

If i remember correct thief wins not a single 1v1, can t stand on point. Rev has the same role of +1 and decap but can even stay outnumbered for sometime cause has more blocks, invul and armor. Basically it should be a choice if u run thief or rev but currently there is no chance for running thief instead of revenant and that should be a sign maybe.

As a Thief main and Rev alt, I agree. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told to reroll Rev instead of play Thief. It’s sad.

Anet explanation behind consistent nerfs that lead thief to state of squishy ranger pet (thief can’t 1v1 anyone but serves as decap/+1 pet for team) were that thief has mobility and burst dmg for +1. Well rev has it all on top of amazing sustain. Did Anet throw their own logic out of window when making rev? Where is developer integrity in this?

Yep rev dies faster than thief. That is why we see thiefes everywhere.

With all the condi burst going on at later divisions, yes it is, I can’t survive Mesmer and Necros focusing me.

You are not going to live long as thief if condi chrono and necro are focusing you either. The reason why you don’t die as much as thief is because you almost never engage team fights on first place (nor should, since any random sneeze that is not even meant for you will instagib your thief).

The strongest elite in the game, utterly broken , on a 50second cd with f5 and alacrity.

It was already broken with the regular cooldown. Just arguing its hard to land when you can just lock people into a cc with sword/shield doesn´t justify a skill that freekills someone even in a 1v1 withing 5 seconds , on a stupidly short cooldown.

No counter, no fun, completely broken.

if you cant dodge sword 3 and shield 5 .you are a noob .

and about no counter part , pathetic liar . blind , evade , block , los and even in moa form you have skill 2 and 5 to escape ,also your traits are still working .

the only classes that can do it is rev and daredevil
every other class has only so many dodges

I’m still allowed to demand nerfs for a class that is too strong. Doesn’t really matter if there are 2 other classes who are even “more too strong” in your opinion.

But if you think that a reaper or scrapper nerf is more urgent, create an own thread – I don’t know why I have to repeat myself 1000 times

Well if that is your logic, rev needs a buff because it is too weak against reapers and chronophansma shatters.

If you want to talk about thieves and warriors needing a buff to be able to compete with rev pls make a corresponding thread!

Not if it hits harder than any other dps class with skills that have only 4sec cd (sword 2) or that combine cc + evade + high damage all in one (staff 5).

The more you say the more I sense a l2p issue here.

Let’s talk about numbers:
Precision strike deals about 4K dmg on a light amored target if all 3 projectiles hit in sPvP on the Paladin/Retribution Meta. 4K! Are you kidding me? That’s nothing!

A thief shadowshot deals about the same amount of dmg. and is a gab closer. I’ve fought thieves who had such a good timing that they wrecked me just by using headshot, shadowshot, autoattacks and dash. These thieves are rare but they show what the class is capable of.

SotM hits hard on squishy opponentes – if it hits. Most of the time it doesn’t.

Wat? That spell takes easily half of my thief’s HP…. also from my experience it hits very well, even through walls, outside the range, through dodge even sometimes and around the corners…. it also follows you across the map if you teleported.

The reason you don’t see war and thief besides they are underpowered,

Rev does their job more efficient.

thief and war are fine, other classes or elites rather are too overtuned and need massive nerfing

[Suggestion] Matchmaking/Leagues

I think generally season 2 changes was a step in the right direction. The leagues are definitely more competitive compared to grind fest from season 1. However the current system still has a lot of flaws that turn a lot of players from pvp by the looks of it.

This suggestions are based mostly on systems from other games (which work).

Suggestions:

1. Beginning of each season every player should have their mmr reset. The moment player starts to queue for ranked, they have to finish 10??? placement matches. The difficulty of each match (better teammates but also better opponents) increases with each win and decreases with each loss. The more matches out of 10 player won the higher they get placed in divisions. Having higher division last season also adds couple points to calculation of the division placement.

Reason: in current season not so experienced/bad/average players were forced to be farmed by good players so those good players could climb up divisions really fast. Technically not a bad idea but works really bad if you take human aspect into consideration. No matter how bad player is and even if he realizes it, it doesn’t provide great experience nor motivation to play the game if you get farmed for 40+ matches straight. We need more players in pvp, not less.

2. Matchmaking: both, player and enemy teams setups, should be mainly based on division/pip range and not MMR. In ideal case, matchmaking should be based only on division/tiers/pips imo.

Reason: the current system sets up player team based on their MMR and enemy team based on division/pip range which results in a lot of lopsided matches. I understand that it was implemented to speed up climbing of the good players up the divisions but once again it causes extremely frustrating experience for a lot of players (since let’s be honest, majority are not THAT great yet they are forced to get farmed by top 10% for long time) and takes too long to balance out. Placement matches would be better solution, imo.

3. I think not losing pips for close matches was a good idea. It motivated players to actually try to get as highest possible score and possibly even win the game even though it looked like complete loss. The removal of that feature caused a lot of afking in matches this season and since customer support never does anything about it, i think the feature should be back.

4. Player should lose tiers in emerald/sapphire after certain amount of loses. Example: Jack is in emerald tier 2 with 0 pips. He loses 5 matches in a row, he loses tiers and moves to tier 1 in emerald.

5. Players should lose divisions after extremely long loss streaks in tier 1 with 0 pips (e.g. 10 matches) to discourage afking/trolling etc.

1. elites need massive nerfs, all of them – they were suppose to bring build variety instead everyone is forced to use them because they are so much better than core builds and even if you play core build revs and other classes elites leave you no choice but use elite as well – horrendous design, hands down

2. revs need nerfs along with elites from other classes, too much sustain dmg and survival, too many spells doing really high dmg with extra perks (invul, don’t require target etc.), too much mobility (which was main reason why thieves were nerfed to the state of ranger pet)

This thread exemplifies the history of Mesmer in GW2:

  1. Mesmer is not meta in competitive play
  2. Mesmer has builds that steamroll bad players
  3. Bad players get steamrolled and come to the forums to whine about it
  4. Mesmer gets nerfed again
  5. Mesmer goes from not meta to garbage in competitive play

Here’s to hoping Anet ignores the baddies and doesn’t execute point 4.

Well if you look more at ESL matches… you will see more mesmers than the last week. Next week, you will see some more.

Actually, if you play the RANK game… you probably find 1 mesmer each match from Diamond and up.

I wrote full ticket with screenshots and name of the guy that was hacking. Customer support response:
“Do you happen to have any more information about this person? their display name? did they ever admit to what they were doing in game?

if they had looked into it, they would have concluded st like: “he uses his stuns all the time.. thats so smart. sign of a good player.”

but srsly thats kittened up. they couldve said “we are useless” instead. same meaning.

actually issue was that guy was porting across the map instantly w/o using any teleport skills and even during fight he wasn’t actually running around but porting to random places

given it is harder to track on mesmer but even mesmer can teleport only so much and definitely not port across the map w/o using portal….

anet can track those things (they said this is how they tracked xmas JP exploiters) but i guess in pvp case they are not interested

i am not even going mention he had close to no CDs on spells that actually have long CD….. there were 4 gravity wells at the same time on point just from him

1. quite few ppl don’t know how to play thief since it has been pretty much dead for entire season (courtesy of beloved Anet balancing team)
2. worst part: a lot of people don’t know HOW to play WITH a thief on team
3. decent revs/scrappers completely shut down thieves – the more there are of those on enemy team the less impact you have on outcome of the match as a thief – meanwhile Anet turns blind eye to issue and continues to gold spoon those classes

At least this made me laugh… good one.
