“No need to kill/grind mobs”

I just want to add that in fact killing mobs does help with some XP and also loot, whether for salvaging into materials you can use for crafting or equip. So you may want to kill all you can stand, just for that.

I think I saw while skimming posts, advice to get a salvage kit and sickle, axe, and pick, and collect every node you run across. Holding CTRL shows them if in range even if your map doesn’t show them yet. Salvage low value items, sell higher value items.

Also, check the trading post to see what light armors sell for, you’d be surprised what the demand is for them. Just right-click on a piece of armor and pick “sell at trading post.” You should be able to figure it out from there.

Not a worry for me since I use two computers. The main invites the alt into his party, they enter the instance, main stands there while alt runs around harvesting.

He’s a bit rude though, doesn’t shout out any encouragement or anything. ;P

It’s only been a week, but I’ve gone back to mouse & n52. The controller and software work as intended, but I just use the wrong buttons too often. The old dog/new trick thing. I’ll give it another shot with another game with fewer button options.

In Guild Wars 1, in the starter areas, you could “relive” the starter missions if your character was from one of the other areas. They could do something similar with this.

Daily Worthless Actions & Daily Achievements

DeanBB.4268

The only change I’d like to see with the dailies is more PvE options. Maybe double what’s there now, or make it broader as the OP suggests (4 wood in a specific zone or 20 wood anywhere) to better fit how one is playing in PvE – - much like the “PvPers complete dailies just by playing” philosophy.

That is level-dependent though, so you may not see it until you reach a certain level. Apparently, Anet thinks you have to reach a certain level of trustworthiness in order to be privy to such information.

Anyone else not get excited about expansions?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DeanBB.4268

DeanBB.4268

I’m a fairly casual player, so think I’m similar to Kedarrian (OP) even though it looks like he’s farther along in the game than I am.

I’m not sure how an expansion really changes things. Right now there are people doing things I’m not doing/haven’t gotten around to yet. There are maps I haven’t explored, so adding more doesn’t really change anything. Adding the Revenant doesn’t impact me, other than I’ll want to create one and try it out. Shiny stuff is always exciting, after all.

The game as it stands remains for those who wish to keep playing it as-is, barring future updates, which come whether or not an expansion happens. So adding content that others will undoubtedly explore far sooner than I will doesn’t really impact me.

I expect new HoT content to draw players there, but also expect they will drift back to older areas after the shininess wears off. So I don’t expect current game areas to be ghost towns. Look at all the new players with these $10 sales. Many of them will want to continue exploring the current Tyria, and not everyone will rush out and get the expansion. Plus, who knows what the expansion will bring that has some impact on the existing world, be it events, achievements, needed materials or whatever.

Let those excited for the expansion enjoy it. It’s an MMO – you pick your own path, let others enjoy their own paths. That’s the beauty of it.

Best Race/Build for Engineer PVP oriented !!!

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: DeanBB.4268

DeanBB.4268

Racial skills are by design not intended to make a difference in game choices. So your human engineer is just fine.

Where are you at? I’d suggest hanging out in Queensdale and Divinity, mapping and doing hearts and events. You can go through the portal in Divinity and get to Lion’s Arch, and then to the other racial cities and do those starter zones as well. All low level.

Everything gives experience: mapping, events, hearts, harvesting nodes (plants, trees, ore), POI’s (point of interest), vistas. Do it all.

Do the personal story (follow the guide, top-right of your screen) when you feel comfortable.

How is your gear? If usable pieces for level 10+ aren’t dropping, look for vendors (sword or shield icon) to update/fill out missing pieces.

"Noob" Question about gems

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DeanBB.4268

DeanBB.4268

No, nothing in the gem store is really pay to win, as they say. Lots of style (outfits, armor skins, toys) and convenience (everlasting picks) stuff, plus things like XP boosters and keys to open the chests you find in-game.

And, once you’re rich, you can buy gems with in-game gold to get some of that stuff.

Need help getting startet

When doing hearts, if you go out of range then that heart’s guide (“kill ten rats for Mr Fuzzy…”) will go away. Moving closer to the heart will bring it back.

Just wander around the starting area. Do any hearts you find and when a dynamic event pops up, participate in that. Often doing an event will end up completing the heart’s requirement.

Finish all that… keep wandering.

Go back into your home town and explore it. View vistas, discover POI’s (point of interest), get all the way points. Same stuff you do outside, but nothing tries to eat you here. It all gives you XP.

Finish all that, then take the Asura Portal to Lion’s Arch, then the portals to the other races’ starting areas… rinse and repeat until you’re comfortable starting the Personal Story, which opens up at level 10.

New to the game and need some answers/tips :)

DeanBB.4268

While leveling up you will be swapping out gear constantly. An outfit covers it all up, but skins have to be applied via a transmutation stone, so are better left until you get to level 80 and have gear you’ll keep for a while.

I rather enjoy the changing look as I’m leveling and finding new gear.

Question About Downloading the game

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: DeanBB.4268

DeanBB.4268

The game makes a huge data file that it draws from for local access. So that file is probably open/locked while the download is happening and not included in the folder size if you query it.

How to level??

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: DeanBB.4268

DeanBB.4268

If you have completed/mapped your home city and the zone outside it, go through the Asura portal in your home to Lion’s Arch. Map it, if desired. Then go to each of the other racial cities and map and complete their zones, as desired.

Lion’s Arch is the hub that leads to all the other cities for free.

[Suggestion] Better Map Exploration

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DeanBB.4268

I disagree. Exploration is something I enjoy. Plus it rewards XP and freebies once an area is completed. Make it account-wide and I lose a big “to-do” item for the rest of my characters.

NPE Feedback [Merged] - Please read 1st post

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

DeanBB.4268

I bought another account while on sale this weekend. I enjoyed the fresh start, this account even without the benefit of a linked GW1 account for free goodies. I enjoyed unlocking things, like skins, and everything having a fresh and unexplored feel to it.

What I did not care for was just being able to explore freely. Why can’t I see all the POI’s, skill points, vistas, etc? And why, since I’ve made it to a skill point, can’t I claim it? Why is that level locked when I can’t pick a utility skill for quite a while anyway? I can’t see the benefit of that. It just means I have to go back to that location when skill points are unlocked and redo that content. Not a game breaker, but annoying.

But overall, I don’t mind the NPE.

Guild Wars Sale - Multiple Accounts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DeanBB.4268

DeanBB.4268

Sale coming up this weekend again. What are pros/cons of having more than one account? I can think of some, but must be others.

Pros:

Each can have a guild/storage
Do dailies/get daily rewards twice (as desired)
Mail stuff back and forth
Holiday/birthday goodies
Cheap character slots for storage/hoarding

Cons:

Another account to upgrade come HoT (or leave as “vanilla”?)
Time spent on “alt account” doesn’t add to “main’s” accomplishment, AP, etc.
Lots of account/soul bound items that you can’t filter into main account

Thanks for the heads up. Again, not changing = not paying attention to when it happens.

I finally have a gaming controller (Sabrent 12 button, $10), the software to configure it (Xpadder, $10), and a profile I am happy with. Now I just need to get used to it.

The advantage of this controller over an Xbox controller (other than the nice, cheap price) is 6 buttons rather than 4. So I have 1-5 mapped on them with a tap and 6-0 on a longer hold. All I’ve done so far is run around LA testing configurations, figuring out what to map where, so I’ll start using it in combat next.

Google “gw2 game controller” and you’ll see others have been doing this. I’m not claiming it to be superior to K/M, just hoping I can play the game better with it.

I’ll still use mouse/keyboard for inventory management, crafting, etc.

Also, I switched to a vertical mouse for both home and work and find it helps. There are a bunch to choose from on Amazon. Now when I do use a normal mouse, it feels really weird.

Ultimately, the races are all about equal. A few racial skills that don’t make too much difference, different story lines, different starting areas. The larger models (norn, charr) vs normal size (human, sylvari) vs small (asura) might make a difference to some people as far as camera and tight spaces.

All professions have something to offer and you can make 5 to try out different ones. Just pick one that sounds fun to you and go for it. Both warrior and guardian are good choices and heavy armor may help with survivability as you figure out the game.
