All the vests and riding clothes and shorts did get removed in order to “streamline” the Style section, along with a number of eyeglasses. They gave a one week notice so people could buy them before they were gone. I think that was in … October?

Kalarchis, however did you get a picture of the Mystic Forge with no one at it? I can tell it’s from a vista, but those still show people. Is your server that low on folks?

I have so many screenies of LA from the last almost 2 years that it will be hard to narrow them down. Between holiday events, role play sessions, dance offs, compulsive screenshotting of vistas … I think I may wait to see how it’s changed and get comparison shots of the same places after.

I also just got a second gold star and Gifts on an alt and I know I didn’t work on finding all the white areas with her, just the zone completion requirements.

The armor is account bound until equipped, so the same crafting alt can make it for both without needing to double up the recipes.

Only you can decide which items you give priority. Or at least I have no advice on the matter, not having done any weapons and only having done Light chest/skirt/wings for the looks.

The “nerf” will be in the features patch most likely. At a guess, some time in March.

New player playing as Elementalist

Donari.5237

All right, deep breath there! First, are you elementalist or mesmer? Those are very different professions. Second, are you on EU or NA? The two regions can’t play with each other.

Third, if by quests you mean the Personal Story, that can wait a bit while you do other things in the game. Some people never do it, or wait until they’re 80 so they can do it in an uninterrupted story flow. If you mean the hearts, some of them can be managed far below level and some are tougher. If you mean the dynamic events, just go back to a lower level part of the zone. Or even move to another race’s starting zone. You’ll be downleveled so you aren’t one-shotting everything, but it’ll still be easier.

Whoops, got called to a dungeon. I hope what I said so far helps.

The thing that struck me about the reaction to Escape From LA was how the initial flood of postings were all excited, happy, and making Snake Plisskin jokes. It’s been a while since we had an upbeat response to an announced LS chapter.

Sure, now we’re getting some naysayers and worriers, and the requisite predictors of gloom who are certain ANet lives to suck all the joy out of their life, but there’s still a ton of positive speculation going on.

My Engineer is a Norn. His dream is to make his legend by building a far greater lodge than the one in Hoelbrak. He travels and experiments and does architectural work on a smaller scale, all aimed at making what would essentially be a norn-style arcology.

Sometimes that means fiddling with smaller gadgetry, as in his attempts to design long-lasting light sources that instead resulted in explosive beer kegs …

The key components are the loot from the event, essentially. I can usually open 2 to 3 chests in the lair after any marionette fight through careful use of the Spare Keys, and get dragonite and yellows, greens, blues, and cores. So I’d doubt you’d want them afterwards, they’re just a clever way of getting you loot even if you lose the fight.

I’ll be surprised if this really is a full blown bye bye to LA. The teaser doesn’t say it’ll be gone forever, just that an attack’s coming, despite the dramatic implications.

Otoh I’ll be pleasantly surprised if it is. Not because I dislike the city, but because that’s the sort of big world changing stuff that I thought this game would have. The world’s at war with giant forces of nature and a megavillain, it’s unreal not to have direct/collateral damage and serious impact on lives.

I’ve seen big builds hit as early as 12:30 pm eastern and as late as five pm. Generally if you’re home a bit after 2 pm you may not get to load in the moment it’s live but you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it.

The sadness for me lies in the fact that long years ago I gave my husband a Christmas present. Tuesday evenings would be for him and me, I said, not for me to fade off into MMO land. Three weeks later my WoW guild started story nights on Tuesdays … and then patches all came on Tuesdays … and now GW2 builds happen on Tuesdays … I can almost never really sink into the new stuff the first day.

Otoh I get a steak dinner and a movie to watch. It’s not all bad Plus if I’m not in court in the afternoon on a Tuesday I can usually get home to enjoy 1 to 3 hours of the new build before I have to head to the grocery store.

If we have to choose between account bound unlocks and tradeable dyes, I’ll go with the latter. But I really would like the unlocked ones to be account wide. Same reason I still haven’t used my gas mask, in some ways, though the gas mask truly is unique and the dyes are just a bit hard to get more of.

“You’re wasting your time. Nothing ever happens in the suburbs.”

After a few guild RP gatherings at Lion’s Shadow, that line’s a running joke for us.

Detha’s line that Nike quoted is one of my favorites.

And for no particular reason, I always get a kick out of an NPC vendor who says “I have what you need! … What do you need?” And out of Sylvari that say “All things have a right to grow” while I’m harvesting a plant next to them.

I remember a PS or maybe just a DE that I haven’t found again. I was escorting a Sylvari knight. Suddenly he screamed “You asked for this!” and charged off to the side to attack a yellow named boar.

Donari.5237

This isn’t one of those things that can be quickly discussed and suddenly people will change their minds from one side to the other. Either you consider same-sex dating to be fine or even normal, or you consider it not to be. And either you think it’s just adding a note of realism to the world lore or you think it’s in there to shout a message (which message you may or may not agree with).

Me, I think it’s great that love has fewer boundaries these days, and I think it should be something that occasions no comment beyond what any loving couple might cause. So I don’t feel it’s a deliberate message beyond “we’re not going to avoid same sex relationships just because they oog some people out.”

Let’s think about Jory and Kas as to whether they make sense for each other, sure. But their body shape isn’t part of that equation, not in Tyria.

Characters of color?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I happen to find darker skin tones and hair more visually appealing RL, so when I’m making characters in games I’ll usually lean to those. But I go for what fits the world, so for instance Donari is just a touch swarthy as he’s a nobleman of Kryta. And Jin is of Canthan descent, so her tone’s deeper. I have a fairly chocolate skinned Norn that had black hair until I got the new updo hairstyle and it begged for gold (but she has wider lips and nose, and looks a lot like my adopted biracial RL sister now — sigh, my sister’s so beautiful … ).

It does get hard to see the facial detail in game, though. My main sylvari has very dark brown bark but I gave her white hair and eyes to stand out, along with a very pointy set of features that the hair silhouettes and the white mottling skin pattern.

Could be interesting if there were a study done on how much variance people go for in character looks vs. their own RL looks, perhaps correlating in whether they RP or not. As a somewhat plain faced woman RL, I do tend to go for better looking characters be they male or female. I’m playing a fantasy game, I don’t want to be frumpy!

What or where is the Train?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

There are two of them, Queensdale and Frostgorge. They consist of circling through the zone to catch champions as they spawn, mass-attacking them down, and heading to the next one in order. They aren’t always moving smoothly, but if you want to farm champions that’s the way to do it. Get in the zone, make sure you have all necessary waypoints, and then ask nicely in Map where you should go to join the train.

There’s no need to do the train, btw. In fact it can keep you from learning how to use your profession’s abilities because the loot pinatas just die. And it can get so boring … and keep you from seeing all the interesting stuff around you. But it’s great to finish out group events for dailies, for generating gold in a hurry, or to level up an alt.

Soulstealer, I’ve had that exact issue since last Sunday. Today was the first progress I had, so you might want to try this:

Assuming you use Win7 on a PC, set up another account on your desktop, marked as administrator. Log on as that, and load the game. Your TP may work! Mine did! Support is now giving me suggestions on how to repair things so it works on my main account because having to completely relog my machine to an unconfigured desktop with the wrong browser is NOT fun.

Warning: I had something bizarre happen, most of my desktop shortcuts on my main desktop vanished when I logged back to it from the test account, leaving me with a completely random set of 8 icons, only two of which I’ve used recently. GW2’s shortcut, POOF.

And the TP won’t work through my main desktop.

You don’t have to actually PvP though. If you go to the lobby in the Mists (hit the crossed swords icon in your little bar at the top left of the screen, pick Go To The Mists) you will be at 80 with default armor and weapons. The vendors give you other runes and sigils and weapons for free. You can open up your trait lines and see what all of them do, and go attack target dummy golems to practice the skill effects and combinations. It’s not quite the same as actually doing PvE or PvP but it helps you get a feel.

Also there is a PvP locker in the Mists with all possible PvP armors organized by armor weight. While the icons are greyed out until you actually get an item to store in that slot, you can still use the preview function to see what you’ll look like just in case appearance matters to you over the length of game play. Bear in mind that you can dye anything but the preview will show in your current dye set so it might look bad color wise.

I’m much more fond of mesmer than engineer because engineer means a lot of keyboard dancing, which might be exactly what you want. Also one of the engineer’s highest dps ranged options, grenade kit, is 100% ground target skills and no auto attack at all.

Mesmer doesn’t have pets, exactly (though I thought they did at launch and therefore resisted trying them out for a while). What they have are spells that persist until dispelled/killed or the target dies, along with an option to do one of four different things with a pre-emptive dismissal (dps burst, confusion, daze, or mesmer brief invulnerability to damage). There are a lot of very useful utility skills to swap out depending on the situation and two major build styles with sub-builds of each.

I feel very in control of the battlefield on my mesmer, and very reactive with my engineer. Ymmv, of course.

I find the reward to be the fun of the fight, win or lose. Though of course having won several times does improve it. But what do you mean “little reward?” Put together the cyphers you get from lane defense (of which you get even more on a losing fight because the combat goes on more than 5 lane fights), go to Scarlet’s Secret Lair, and open the chests.

I’ve been swimming in yellows and dragonite ore and even cores from those chests, to the point I’m avoiding the fight because I can’t sell the yellows on TP (due to having the TP broken this past week for me) and I ran out of spare BL Salvage Kits for the first time ever. When the TP was working I could get something like 2 gold per marionette battle just for selling the yellows. All that after having a blast teaming up with fun people to do an exhilarating, perfectly paced, just-the-right-length large scale combat.

Another sign of trouble: Most of the time when I exit GW2 I get a split second window that pops up and I am pretty sure it’s the one you get when the game hard freezes/crashes and ANet wants a report on what you were doing at the time you crashed. It comes faster than I can see it and I’m not sure how to screenie it especially since it usually takes me by surprise.

Support had me do a diagnostic on my network pathing, I assume tomorrow or Monday they’ll let me know if it told them anything. A friend commented about DNS and my husband helped me find my DNS setting, which had numbers in it and he said nope, it needs to be on automatic so we changed that. Rebooted, no good, the TP stubbornly clings to blank panel-dom.

I hear there’s a small freebie in the gem shop for people, oh well. I don’t actually need another repair canister or wvw xp booster But I sure would like to be thinking about bids on Lovestruck weapons.

I’m so ready to weep, I waited nearly two hours today before even commencing the reinstall to try to get info on what I’d have to do and all I got was “back up your big .dat” which I did.

Now, I did not delete the temp cache before the reinstall, and I just found -two- of them. But deleting them both and logging back into game didn’t fix it.

Why does the GW2 Playerbase ignore orders?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

What does ‘range Warden 3’ mean? Perhaps not everyone speaks MMO-speak.

Maybe this example isn’t that bad, but most ‘orders’ I see in this kind of content are totally incomprehensible to many of us. For some reason I don’t have much of a problem with it in wvw, it seems to be in open world events like Teq and OoM that you get people giving incomprehensible commands and then getting shouty with everyone for not carrying them out. Honestly, I just think ‘Huhh??’ half the time I see these ‘orders’.

I’ll agree that sometimes the slang gets exclusive. In WvW I look at Team and Map and I see directions to go defend X location but it uses a shorthand name for the location like “Hills” and I have to spend time panning my map around trying to figure out where that is. Or they ask for siege on Y and don’t say what sort of siege.

But in the Marionette fight and the Wurm fight people are typically gathering for 30 minutes or more in advance. Map chat is chock full of explanations of the fight mechanics. People are willing to explain the terms to anyone that actually asks. So if Map says “remember, range Warden 3,” you can say “What do you mean by that?” And then someone will explain “When fighting to break the 3rd chain, you’re facing a boss that hurts in melee if you don’t know what you’re doing, so use a ranged weapon and stay away from the boss while avoiding its bombs and the marionette aoe’s.”

If you don’t know what Warden 3 is, you’ll get people willing to explain the sequence of bosses you fight to break each of the 5 chains. Etc.

As to why people don’t always mindlessly follow a Commander’s orders, well. Sometimes we actually know the fight well enough to know the Commander’s goofing it up. Like the one that ordered Lane 1 to gather at the spawn point ready to fight champs … when we needed to be at the gate and ready for it to open in the first 30 seconds. If they demonstrate knowledge of the fight in advance, and if there’s overall coordination needed, a single source of command can improve things dramatically. If not, then why should we do what they say simply because they have an icon?

I say that as someone who loves a good raid leader and is very happy when clear commands are coming to form a mass of people into an effective team.
