Esplen.3940

I don’t really feel/notice the impact either. They wanted to stop the way that we could use one clone to do two shatters which was a bug and this was the answer. I mean if you pull off a mindwreck and then hit decoy and want to daze then I could see the cooldown of a single second being a slight annoyance but I agree with Alissah that it isn’t that bad at all.

You can still pull off that bug which is why the global cooldown is still in place. Albeit it’s a LOT harder to pull it off, it is still possible.

I hope you realize that the reason it was band-aided and remains so is people were essentially getting 4 instant dazes (25 vuln + might) and 7 mind wracks (with the previous might and vuln to make it do massive damage).

11 shatters with 6 clones and ~0.25s give or take, even without a macro.

What Esplen said.

Full DPS is also good, but the combination of DPS and massive utility is what makes mesmers outstanding in dungeons. One mesmer and one guardian or engi (or engi + guardian for that matter) that know what they are doing in the same group can make any dungeon a joke.

Engies in a game with a real aggro system would break it. They have so much mitigation that it’d be like dodge-tanking in WoW, but as an actual concept that doesn’t rely on rng. Glad they have a kittenty aggro system, since it actually works for this game and doesn’t need to be tweaked.

Signet of Inspiration gives swiftness more often then you think. Sometimes it even stacks swiftness two times in a row.

Not very useful unless you have swiftness/boon duration. Trust me. If you have 100% boon duration, you can MAYBE get 100% uptime on swiftness, but even that’s not a guarantee.

DPS and utility. I would not sacrifice one of the other. I have tried going full support, but it’s only really helpful when with low level/low experience players. You basically do the most damage you can while time warping during hard spots and using your utility skills as… well… utility. Feedback, Null Field, etc when necessary. Make use of your skills when they are needed and continue to deepz.

They are one of the top wanted because they have massive utility without sacrificing dps.

Null field change?

Well what I am saying the tool tip was correct a few months ago.. null field, the last time I used it would strip all the boons and conditions… instantly. There was not a tick needed. It is incorrect now and null field now makes you wait ticks to remove conditions/boons… This is new. I guess as Nordic stated it was changed sometime ago.. I guess 2-3 months since it has been about that long since I have used it.

I don’t recall it ever doing this. I remember it would strip 2-3 conditions per pulse, but that was about it. If you’ve ever been against a condi-necro, null field isn’t superbly fast.

Esplen.3940

Start with Shatter. It’s better to start hard and make it easier.

Start with tankier sets. It’s better to start tanky and make it harder.

Same as armor.

To reiterate on my nonsensical logic…

Playstyle-wise, you want to challenge yourself. Pick the hardest build to master and then go easier to find your playstyle. The reason why you want to start hard is so you have the option of picking your build. If you start easymode, the switch to a harder build is drastic and can throw many players off of a build that works and is possibly their one true calling.

Armor-wise, you want to ease yourself into the game. Yes, you’re now 80 and getting Exotics. They’re easy to get and your skill really has a long way to go, trust me. Start tanky so you can make mistakes and understand how to prevent them. If you get insta-gibbed every time you go to farm, you won’t learn anything except not to farm. If you get hit really low when you go to farm, you will be able to see what an enemy does and slowly learn to adapt. The more you adapt, the easier it gets.

I would suggest, armor-wise, to start with a Soldier/Knight, go to Valkyrie, then go to Berserker. Don’t get Exotic Trinkets, stick to Greens/Rares until you find your balance/build. If you want condition damage instead, go Rampagers/Carrion instead of Berserker.

Build-wise, I would highly suggest going Shatter for a month, then learning a support build, then learning a Phantasm build. The Phantasm build will share gear with the Shatter build, for the most part, but the support build may require another armor-set. Use greens if you’re poor, otherwise, get what you can.

In terms of building up your armors, I would highly recommend doing dungeon runs to get what you need. Try not to do any speedrun and just do explorable with unexperienced groups. You can do speedruns, if you really want, but try to stick with pugs. A harder experience will harden you for battle (yes, it’s really hard to not say hard very often). Use your tokens to get armor as you work your way to the sets you want.

Once you’ve found a stable build/armor-set, challenge yourself to fractals. Try to get to 20 so you can farm them once a day or at least 2-3 times a week. This will get you Relics which you can use to get Ascended items like a Backpiece or Rings. Don’t buy Rings from the Laurel Vendor.

From here, you should have Exotic Armor and Ascended Backpack + Rings. To get the rest of your Ascended Trinkets, do your Dailies/Monthlies and buy an Amulet with Laurels. For your Accessories, I highly suggest using Guild Commendations, but if you really want to get them with Laurels, do it, Ecto prices right now are pretty low, from what I hear, haven’t really checked.

That is how to PvE suit up.

That is similar to what I did, not quite step by step as I’ve had my character since the beginning and also gone through many, many learning steps. I’ve basically cut out a lot of the nonsensical things I did that won’t really help you.

If you don’t like PvE/Dungeons, feel free to ignore this post, but this is just a method that will give you a lot of Mesmer experience while gearing you up AND giving you free money (dungeons are pretty good money).

Domination Trait 2: Joke?

Esplen.3940

Duelling Grandmaster Major trait: Furious Interruption – Joke? 4 Seconds of Fury for Interrupting in a Grandmaster slot? It would still be weak if it were in a lower tier, but grandmaster? Ok, one has to consider Chaosstorm random interrupts stacking quite some fury if lucky, and interrupting unimportant long casttime skills might make this senseable too. But still it doesnt compete if you want to actually Interrupt aimedly.

This GM Trait is not that bad. It has no CD. SO If u use some AOE Interupt and u get 5x interupt.. Well 20sec fury… Not bad.. But not handy enough too… Hahaha…

wait, so mesmer has access to 3(ish) aoe interrupts; diversion (traited), chaos storm and focus pull. they actually go nicely together as you could focus pull guys into warden, swap to staff, drop chaos storm, get some confusing bolts, hit diversion. bam 4 seconds of no one getting hit on your team, and if you’re against 5+ players/mobs, thats potentially 60 seconds worth of fury – the 4 seconds or so to do the combo. so lets say 20-40 conservatively. add in runes of altruism, and thats perma-fury. add in signet of inspiration, and you’ve got perma-fury on your whole team.

i think I see a build shaping up here.

Stun grandmaster is still better. With Diversion you statistically guarantee* yourself a stun.

*: As much as statistics allow. Without iPersona, a 3clone F3 will give you a 12.5% chance of not stunning and/or stunning only once. With iPersona, a 4shatter F3 will give you a 6.25% chance of not stunning and/or stunning only once.

If you position your clones well, you could potentially lock someone down for a while if they don’t have a cc-break or if they blow it too fast. Not sure how you’d finish them with this build, but it would be nice to stun someone while bursting them, especially with the “cookie cutter” shatter build traits of applying vuln on F3 so your MW(F1) will do massive bonus damage. I mean, you’re basically serving them to yourself on a platter by stunning them and applying vulnerability. You also give yourself some might (if you have iPersona) and can dish out some good joojoodamage. The only problem is you might have to trade out Deceptive Evasion making your shatter factory reliant on skills alone, not dodges.

Newbie build for general PvE/Dungeons

in Mesmer

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

I would suggest starting with a Shatter build and letting yourself die often (prepare for repairs). Tweak your build once you start surviving and then end up where you want. From there, you should be able to understand what you want to get out of PvE and then switch to support, phantasm, shatter, etc.

The reason why you start kittenter is because it’s the hardest and it’s better to be good at the most skill-intensive one than to want to try it out while only knowing an easy to play one.

Is the Sylvari Hound a fair substitute for HoB? Does the same hold true for Sylvari?

Take Root, Sylvari Hound, and Tree are all viable, but I’m not sure in terms of straight DPS which is the best. The Hounds are for a P/P/C build, and I don’t know how the rest of them scale since they’re mostly suited for applying bleeding while smacking them down, at least from what I’ve read/seen.

I don’t play Sylvari, so I just get my Golames and Lamefire Wolf, but I gotta say, Radiation Field and Pain Inverter are so nice. Technobabble is terrible in my opinion, too long of a cooldown for a daze. I can just run Signet of Dom for a better effect with a cooldown I can reduce.

I also would like old Pain Inverter from GW1, huehuehuehue.

Staff does really good damage, especially in PvE where it’s easy to plan around it’s AE and bouncing to maximize buff potential on the party.

Greatsword to me has always been a weapon I use for two reasons: a) Cripple, b) Knocking people off ledges. It excels for that, but the Staff wins out for total damage (since it also provides buffs on friendly players).

And since Warlock is the strongest Phantasm based on full potential numbers.

I once had the idea that each Scepter clone could have their own group of up to 3 “secondary” scepter clones. Indistinguishable, but they aren’t used for any shattering or trait, and if the master clone is destroyed, all secondary clones go down with them.

Still, that’d be 12 clones among which to hunt the real mesmer.

And then the clones clones would clone and the clone tree would spread indefinitely until the enemy dies from 25 stacks of bleeding and 6 damage auto attack procs.

But a Wooden Sword does not look the same! At level 400 crafting, you get unique looks.

My 2c on crafting:
I dislike the fact that you can’t craft what you know unless you’re “aligned” to it. I KNOW HOW TO MAKE A MEAT STEW, DON’T MAKE ME PAY YOU 40C TO MAKE A MEAT STEW.

I personally think that the DISCOVERY panel and Crafting Experience are unavailable unless you’re aligned, but you can still make whatever you know. This makes some semblance of sense, because you still know how to make whatever it is you know how to make.

In an ideal speedrun, at the hardest part, you want everyone to be running Hounds of Balthazar… BUT you want every Mesmer to run Time Warp.

the phantasm build has a very high skill cap

lol. I look forward to you “ripping me apart”. “Very high skill cap” ahahah oh my. Sorry. But popping an iDefender, couple iDuelists and then not dying is NOT very hard at all

I don’t use iDuelist or iDefender in PvP. I only really use Defender in PvE and the last time I did it was versus Canach so I could beat him without touching any traps (Retaliation and I didn’t want to touch a wrong trap due to my red-green color blindness).

I never run Duelist. Why? Because I have no use for the pistol in PvP. I understand that in PvP a Phantasm Mesmer relies on pumping out Phantasms. Offhand Sword gives me that short Phantasm to get pumped out that can be killed.

I have no problem with Duelist in a Phantasm build, it’s just not for me (until I get my Quip, then I’ll see what I can do). You shouldn’t expect every Phantasm Mesmer to run the same cookie cutter build when every Shatter Mesmer doesn’t run the same cookie cutter build.

Additionally, you talk about Blind as if it’s something you can throw out every 3 seconds. I hope you realize that Sta kitten in addition to -conditionDuration both shut down Blind. Unless you have really high twitch reaction and are able to blink-blind someone right before their cast finishes, you should expect it to succeed. You also talk about your blind to force them to use a utility, but you’re blinking to blind which leaves you open.

Fury on the player does not affect illusion crit chance, unless that got changed in this patch too.

Illusions have always pulled their stats from your stats. It’s modified in real time. You can tell by illusion bleed procs and might or stacking sigils or anything of that nature.

Essentially, this makes Illusions have 2 buff bars. They have their own individual bars and then they also have your buff bar. Buffing yourself buffs them, but so does buffing them. You can utilize boon duration and Signet of Inspiration to make some nasty illusions, but it would be so extremely situational that it would be disgusting to set up.

Hmm, might want to retest that. <evil grin> Well they don’t from IE if that’s what you meant, but they sure do from regular attacks now.

Unless it’s happening strictly against targets that aren’t the practice dummies in LA or the golems in HotM, you’re mistaken.

EDIT: Also, giving Fury to the Clones is actually worse than getting it yourself. Stats auto-filter down to Illusions, so giving yourself Might/Fury also gives the Clones ‘virtual’ Might/Fury.

So, yeah, it’s a straight nerf there.

Actually no, because you can give them both the virtual and actual fury allowing them to have +40% critical chance.

Of course, the fact that you getting +20% applies to 4 units instead of 1 is an alarmingly larger stat boost than +20% to a single player, assuming you have 3 clones out, you should theoretically be able to get fury on 2-3 units, so if one of them is you, you now have 1-2 clones with 40% crit chance and 2-3 units with 20% crit chance.

Earlier today, I was able to beat Canach with Condition Damage, I’m not sure if it was a bug or something that was quickly patched server side.

HOWEVER, Canach still takes damage from Retaliation. I am currently fighting him with 3 Illusionary Defenders to make it easier to get the Lair Light-Footed Achievement, due to the mines occasionally going berserk after I disarm them and the fact that I’m red-green color blind, which makes it really hard to tell what’s disarmed.

Yes, it’s a slower method to kill him, but it’s a safer method. Not sure if intended, though.

empowered illusions or phantasmal fury?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

Question: What is your crit chance.
If your crit chance is 60% or less, go for Phantasmal Fury, if it is ~70% or higher, go for Empowered Illusions.

The reasoning is that if you are to give yourself Fury, your Phantasms all gain 20% crit. If they have Phantasmal Fury, your Phantasms now have a 100% chance to crit. However, if you’re at 70% or higher, you’re at 90%+ crit chance with your Phantasms, so 20% extra crit chance is unnecessary.

This is my build:

I swap out the +Phantasm health for Focus trait if I do need to. Although I do miss Staff trait, it’s not really worth it, in my opinion.

Yeah….being uplevel doesn’t uplvl your gear. Still gonna be handicapped. Isn’t really a solo friendly area unless you know how to deal with it. And that takes dying for a while.

Quite the opposite. It does up-level your gear. It levels your gear up in relation to how good it is for your level. In other words, you need to ensure that you have the best possible gear you can in order to remain comparable.

The main disadvantage is the gear will likely only favour 1 stat instead of 3-6. If you pop on power runes (10 power among different runes) to each armor and get the power/precision armour, you should be OK up levelled.

It’s kind of funny though, the way that works, when you gain a level in Southsun you actually become less powerful, because the equipment you are wearing is weaker compared to your level.

Popping on runes does not necessarily help you in regards to upleveling. If your rune gives +10 power, it will give +10 power after uplevel gets applied. This is why when higher levels get downleveled, they still do large amounts of damage (and because of traits).

I still don’t think you understand….

Harmonious Mantra and Restorative Mantra do not work well together. Harmonious will increase your dps from Mantra of Pain, but reduce your (AoE) healing from ALL your mantras.

Persisting Images and Empowering Illusions have no place in your build. You’re shattering, it doesn’t matter how much damage they do. Actually, scratch that, if you’re able to micro manage your timing and phantasms, Empowering Illusions is fine, but Persisting Images is still utterly terrible. Replace it with Medic’s Feedback or Mender’s Purity.

Get rid of your 5 points in Chaos and put it into Dueling for Vigor, or put those 5 points into Illusions and then get Vigorous Revelation instead of Persisting Images.

Lastly, Restorative Illusions is bad without Illusionary Persona. You’re giving yourself too much heal and not enough utility. In fact, Restorative Illusions heals relatively nothing without Illusionary Persona, so I would suggest just scrapping it and getting Condition Removal on Shatter if you want to get Vigorous Revelations instead of Persisting Images.

Your build will still be bleh, but it would be better than a build that keeps on compromising itself.

From there, get your amulet from laurels and the accessories from guild commendations. If you really want to fill your slots, get an accessory with laurels, but Ecto’s are used in everything so it might not be something you want.

If you want a celestial, offer a ring or your amulet for the celestial stat, possibly even one accessory as well, but that’s about it. From there, it’s just a matter of Berserk vs Valk/Cavalier/Soldier/Knight. That’s up to you.

if thats not how it works, y did i see those numbers over a timespan of 2hours over and over again? i must have some pretty bad visions or being drugged. even my m8 was then drugged.

maybe the puppets and all enemies in all dungeons from ac to arah were bugged too, cos i saw the same numbers there. warden ikittenting 12times in a row in 2 to 3 secs span continuously higher numbers

You’re seeing the right numbers. You’re interpreting them wrong. I’m not saying that the numbers are appearing incorrectly. I’m saying you’re not reading them right. Just because it says 3000 after he’kitten 8 times, doesn’t mean each strike now does 3000. It means the TOTAL DAMAGE from that ONE SOURCE OF DAMAGE (which has MULTIPLE STRIKES) is CURRENTLY AT 3000 DAMAGE.

Read on.

im just infront of puppets and my warden hits very often last hit over 4.
if this happens then the last 3 hits MINIMUM were around 3200 AVERAGE.
so count together:

4200 + 3800 + 3500 + 3000 = 14500 only for the last 4 hits
worst cycles end on 3600 and it happens wiht same average than maximum

at least 3 more hits are beyond 2000, so 20k is rounded DOWN.
just count the the lame rest together and i get my 20k in around 3-4secs.

so u say evry single hit is summed up from previous?

Each hit’s actual damage / total hits = average hit damage.
(4200 – 3800 + 3800 – 3500 + 3500 – 3000) / 3 = 400
(400 + 300 + 500) / 3 = 400

Each hit is doing ~400 damage and it’s tallying 12 times. This is just counting the last four hits, if you want the true average damage to get to 4200 it would be 350 damage per hit.

Look at your healthbar. Have you taken a full Warden to the face? If so, how would you be able to survive 4200 + 3800 + 3500 + 3000 damage with JUST FOUR SWINGS?

The damage is ADDED. Looking back at the previous math you did (after reaching 3000 damage) 500 damage, then 300 damage, then 400 damage with your Warden’s swings.

It’s not rocket science.

Crabtacular Achievement

Problem is, if they change it now, those who do have it will be cheated. It wouldn’t be fair for one person to have to run around for an unspecified amount of time until they can get the Karka to roll over everyone, and another player to just wait until the match ends and grab the crab.

Those two scenarios are not even remotely comparable.

They changed Toypocalypse after many people, including myself, worked hard to get it. Now, I understand why they changed Toypocalypse and was just slightly miffed when they made it easier, but only because I HAD gotten it.

I JUST got Crabtacular! today and am very happy with myself, but I didn’t get it through skill or anything. I was just playing a game and got into a corner and then started running as 3 Karka’s rolled towards me one at a time. I used both my dodges and thought to myself “I MIGHT GET IT NOW~!” then I got it and died to a Karka. It had nothing to do with Skill as I have been skillfully running towards/into Karka all week trying to get the achievement. That time was all unruly and terrible gameplay, but I got LUCKY. I don’t care if they change it to make it easier. It’s ridiculous that they make an achievement based on skill not require skill. If Crab Toss stays forever, then I wouldn’t care, but since the achievement is packaged with Secrets of Southsun, it’s most likely not a permanent activity and so the achievement should be skill based, not luck based.

ANet has proven that they can change achievements, and even though I already have this, I hope that they DO change this achievement. It’s really an unfair achievement, since you’re not achieving anything with skill. It’s like having an achievement for evading 10 attacks with one roll but only having it available in the intro tutorial.

There is no cap at all. I’ve transferred every boon + 25 stacks of might onto allies. Of course getting all that means that I’m usually just doubling the duration of everything except the might stacks.

But when do you ever get a full damage Warlock off in PvP. Don’t get me wrong, they do massive damage, but I only really ever see that against World or Dungeon Bosses, never against Players.

By traiting into Deceptive Evasion you are accepting these terms regardless of having read or known about them beforehand.

You are accepting that you will be spawning a Clone that will target the nearest enemy, be it unaggroed or unaggroable.

You are accepting that you will be not able to control the Clones that come out when you roll.

You are accepting that this will hamper your ability to control every aspect of the game in regards to your playstyle.

You are accepting that this is the way it is, and forevermore shall be.

the question itself is a bit blurry, as u have to negate evrything else like combat situations, enemy behaviour, debuffs and armor asf.

if u wanna have blank numbers (on the puppets in la for example), than sword/focus does the most damage by far.
my mesmers warden hits puppets in la 12 times in a row evry 8 secs with actual gear the last hit is ending around 3800. the last four to five hits are over 3000.
so counted he is doing more than 20k damage evry 9 seconds (its more 8secs but math is easier with 9secs^^=.
wardens do this on three targets as aoe.
so lets say 3x 3 wardens dealing over 20k damage evry 9 secs in a 3sec span.
if u set them evry 3 secs for consecutive strikes u would have more than 20k dmg evry 3secs instead of evry 9. thats approximately around 10k dps on ONE target only those 3 phantasms! if noone kills em they would do that forever^^.

in theory. on stupid la puppets

i couldnt reproduce that blank numbers with any other weaponset, unfotunately the puppets dont show cond dmg numbers or crits
but it shows the biggest disadvantage of wardenmesmers.
9 secs to build up insane stationary burst dps. pretty easy to counter.

That’s not how the Warden damage works…

Take a look, please.

The damage scales up because it’s tallying the total damage.

Assuming the iWarden hits a gate 10 times for 20 damage, the tooltip will show 200 damage at the end. Why? 20 + 20 + 20 +… 10 times is 200. It’ll go 20 —> 40 --> 60 —> 80 --> ~~~ —> 200.

Of course, that’s not the correct hits or damage on a Warden, but I was just elaborating in a way that would let you make sense.

If “combo” damage worked that way then a Warden could effectively 5-7shot an enemy. That way being each hit deals the amount shown in the air, not the amount shown in the air is your total off of the current attack.

The reason why it tallies it together as one damage is because it’s all coming from one damage source/attack and not multiple sources/attacks. I hope that clears it up.

Let’s apply the same math to a Puppet. Assuming you’re dealing 4000 damage over 12 hits to a puppet, then each hit does 4000 / 12 damage or approximately 333 damage.

Hit 1 does 333 damage. Tooltip shows 333.
Hit 2 does 333 damage. Tooltip shows 666.
Hit 3 does 333 damage. Tooltip shows 1000.
Hit 4 does 333 damage. Tooltip shows 1333.
~~~
Hit 12 does 333 damage. Tooltip shows 4000.
Of course, that’s assuming that you got to 4000 damage with no crits. There would also most likely be some bleed ticks popping up next to the damage, but that’s because of the on-crit trait in dueling.
It would be broken if it compounded any other way, because it would essentially be a near exponential damage growth curve if it was done the implied way. The current way makes it very balanced. If you trait into it, it’s still better to shatter with 3 than with 1, of course.
Unless you have 3 out, and 2 die before they reach the target causing you to do less damage with 1 than you would have done if you simply shattered with 1 to start with.
But how often does that happen?
Infrequently, if you are shattering properly. You know that clones can be killed, and so effective shatters are instantaneous point blank attacks.
Poor shatters do happen, also AoE fields and random aoe attacks. Of course in most cases the damage loss can just be counted as soak damage and a player can assume the enemy is tankier instead of realizing the attack was improperly executed without losing any sweat in most fights.
