I suggest spending 70-80 percent of the time studying and practising the mechanics of one class first. Must be the class you really like. Other things don’t matter.
Then spend the rest on other classes, especially those you have trouble fighting against.
First post doesn’t make me a troll buddy it just means I after many years of gaming have learned to avoid forums for the most part. However, I needed to vent after this last weeks match up with my server facing Fort Aspen and being completely out done by nothing more then numbers. 20 Alpha Golems in a single zerg seriously???
I am glad to see my post generated some positive discussion though.
You got that matchup because SoS has a high enough rating that it will sometimes get a T2 fight, which means that a T2 server will be displaced. You just had the lucky to get FA is all – it has to go somewhere.
This week T3 and T4 are pretty much back to normal, so you’ve got a regular week in front of you.
rofl. maybe T4. t3 isnt normal. unless this is what the score is supposed to look like every week.
Why does everyone think, that just because SOS is the weakest of the T2 servers that are around, that them being in T3 means the tier is balanced? You’re all kidding yourselves
The only reason that SoS got the short end of the stick is that the server got two consecutive bad RNG roll. A few fight guilds can’t stand the boredom and went off.
However, the PvX guilds and casuals are still there. It is completely different from a server implosion as some ppl exaggerated it to be.
Ok so S/S meta. With focus as needed. But what should I use for range option? I’m too new not to have range in PUGs.
You can easily swap to a GS when your PUG group decides to range.
I was watching supcutie and Dankening in action just now. It indeed looks like the margin for error is small and one mistake can snowball his team to a big disadvantage.
Shatter mesmer does perfectly fine against thieves.
The problem is most shatter mesmers insist on being chained to a particular weapon and utility setup (staff/GS with portal) and aren’t flexible about changing their build or play-style to match the opponent in a given match.
For me, staff/GS gives the best result against SD thieves. And overall, I find it the best set against majority of other professions.
You might want to switch from ether signet to ether feast. Lower cooldown on heal and cleanse.
tldr;
it is hard to buy guilds when your world is full
Wow, never seen a better summarize than this.
At this point, I believe their megaserver system still factor in your current server when determining which map to put you in in PvE. So they have to make another step to make your world selection only matter to WvW.
For dragonbrand, from multiple friends on DB, I heard you already have a very large WvW population and will have no problem competing in your current matchups.
From your post, I feel probably you are comparing DB to T1 servers. That would be a different story. It will be indeed hard to compete with them in the next tournament. The same thing happened to SoS as a full server in last season’s tournament
Oh, I forgot, in addition, world performance in WvW actually has effect on several PvE stuff at this point.

Btw, according to Anet design, ranger is the highest ranged dps, mesmer comes second. That is quoted from one of their offical balance notes.
Mobile, ranged, high DPS class
Actually shatter mesmer fits your description exactly. Elementalist is very versatile they can certainly do a bit of everything including ranged dps. They also have large aoe but the dps will be a bit unreliable.
Thief is highly mobile but not ranged dps. Ranger is also high ranged dps but can’t teleport up and down like a mesmer.
I am very interested to know a few tips of fighting fellow shatter mesmer players using gs/staff, especially in the non-mirror against those using sword+x.
For me, one new region should be at least 3-4 new zones, and zones with a lot more depth as they mentioned. Anything less than that will be disappointing.
It’s indeed a build with a lot of hate. The best strategy to counter them is actually to leave them alone, similar to PU condie mesmer. However, they are much better than pu condie mesmer in a way that they can actually hold a point…
Probably charr for me. Might consider Sylvari as well.
The situation is getting close to a resolution, the point spread between T2 and T3 is getting so massive that point gains are almost impossible. However all three T2 servers enjoy significant off hours advantages. Only DB would potentially see a large exodus of guilds, but even then I’m not sure.
The real resolution will be he new maps, the new scoring system, and potentially a new tourney. With defense and hold time being weighted more all but guarantees YB will be going to T1 and there will be massive shuffling in that case. Also DB does not have a defensive culture so they are wobbly as well.
DB could have a large exodus of guilds after SoS lost FUN, Syn, II, EK, Rx, and Rs? Explain how.
I am an SoS and admittedly we have the short end of the stick at the moment.
But I am also a member of Rx and I can tell you we are still on SoS. So please be more accurate with your information.I’ve seen many Rx tags on FA recently, I wouldn’t blame them for jumping a sinking ship.
Again I am on the guild and raid with them very often. I do know maybe 2-3 of the guild members in FA. But I don’t call that ‘many’. Or maybe there is another Rx in FA. who knows?
No sniper plz.
We already have ranger who can pewpew from 1500+ range. I really don’t want a thief burst you down from that range in stealth…
Also, in terms of servers rising and falling. It all ends up into a cycle.
What does not change is that there are always plenty of fairweathers who zerg on to the bandwagon.

Probably 1-2 months of WvW tournament.
Hard to predict other than that. Since the Zephyrites crashed their ships, we probably won’t have a four wind festival. But they can still recycle queen’s pavilion content.
Join us and be competitive in T2. Lots of exciting fights and plenty of bags to collet.
We are seeking guilds and also having many guilds recruiting active WvW players.
Not surprised at all. Immediate multiple secondary professions after the expansion goes online can potentially make balance a total mess.
But I do hope the secondary is not strictly an expansion over the original. I hope it will be more of a choice between the two, depending on situations and personal taste.
Basically, by choosing secondary profession, you gain some nice weapon and slot skills but get some of your old profession mechanics altered as well. Rangers lose their pets, mesmers can’t shatter etc. On top of that, you have the same number of trait points. Even though you probably get more trait options in your secondary, you can’t gain an advantage.
Nsp and ion should just pretend they’re golfing
LOL!
Pretty much. I’m over in DB and think that this match up is just not ok. However, in our defense, on reset night, there was little to no opposition from either NSP or IOJ. We were pretty much able to just walk over everything. None of our maps had queues or anything. So we took everything, and held them. Granted NSP has put up some awesome fights, and were able to hold off our zerg for quite a long time. Props to them!
Also while I was on SBI during the last tournament, NSP and IOJ just ate us for breakfast, and we didn’t really stand much of a chance.
But yeah, it’s mostly a population imbalance thing, but I don’t see any real solution. We got knocked out of T2 and back into T3, and unless you change it so servers are matched based on average population, there isn’t much they can do about it.
It should be about how to encourage ppl to go to lower populated servers. The problem came from people transferring from lower populated server to DB and YB before and after last season and creating four T2 servers and huge gap between T2 and below.
Thank you for the effort to fix the single worst issue of this game.
But please bring in the new feature as soon as possible, definitely before the xpac release. I am sure this can be achieved. It can also give players a taste of your new system in xpac
If you want to use it, maybe start experimenting some hybrid damage builds.
one does not simply run full zerk on wvw
Unless you’re a crit thief, or a shatter mes, or a hammer warrior, or a meditation guard.
I thought dps warrior usually go for Greatsword and axe/mace/shield.
“critically hits you for 10,414 using [Backstab]” – I had full health.
I have lvl 80 mesmer. Full zerk – exo armor, ascended trinkets. Anything non-zerk would have less damage. Max crit hit I have done is about 2,000. How to get 10,414 in a split second with mesmer?
So far best weapon (of mesmer) against the thief is the Moa bird. But you may know how hard it is to get invisible thief as target for the whole cast time. Specially if thief surprises and instakills.
lmao.
Ok first off, you are running a full zerk mesmer (light armored class). It doesn’t matter if you are ascended or not, ascended zerk adds no defense regardless.
And you are talking about 2 different classes. Thieves can 1 shot with backstab. Mesmers can 1 shot with shatters.
shadowpass, can i ask you question; i hear all the time, “because you run zerk”, so why is wrong for other class to wear zerker and thief not? Is ok for only thief wear zerk and not other class?
It’s not wrong for other classes to wear zerker. shadowpass never claimed that. If you want to get advice from other players, there was another thread with a lot of useful info which you refused to consider or acknowledge. Don’t put words in other people’s mouths for rhetorical points.
All shadowpass was pointing out was that zerker gear doesn’t give you the defensive stats you need to survive a burst, whether it’s level 80 ascended or level 2 common. The only caveat is the defense bonus from armor pieces, but for light armor professions this is quite low.
Zerker is totally viable for mesmer but only if you know how to avoid burst damage. Thieves are actually more vulnerable with full zerker because their health pool is 2/3 the size of a mesmer’s.
That’s not correct. The ability to survive depends more on your overall build than just a simple health pool. Thieves usually run Shadow arts in WvW and that makes them survive way better than a zerker shatter mesmer.
And playing a shatter mesmer against thief is not just about how to avoid burst damage. Defence and offence usually go hand in hand when fighting thieves. You need to make that split second decision to burst down the thief and survive yourself. Otherwise, even if you survived most of the thief burst and traded back some decent damage. He can still wear you down by constantly resetting the fight.
It will definitely be an xpac. But they might not call it an xpac.
There will definitely be new story content, new maps and new features.
But everything else is up in the air.
Ranger pet 3 skill is indeed fun if you happen to be the ranger. It’s more than one time someone got me down before they got down, then I interrupted their stomp with my 2 downed skill, and by then they were down themselves, but I could get back up and they couldn’t.
Of course, if they have other teammates around, that backfires, but one on one, that’s a very powerful tool.
Rangers do, however, have a lot of other disadvantages. In the end, we don’t have the tankiness of guardians, engineers, certain types of eles, warriors if specced for it and we don’t have the zillion mesmer clones with confusion.
You can’t just compare downed skills to downed skills. Sure the rangers downed skill is as good as most anything out there. But in most other ways we’re at a serious disadvantage.
You can’t remove one aspect of the situation, try to balance it and call the game balanced. Sometimes the way things are balanced aren’t immediately apparent.
Rangers are actually pretty good in terms of surviving. They are reasonably tanky in their survival condie builds. They have a lot of evades and kiting potential on their weapon skills. They also have decent health and endurance regen. The only real disadvantage I think with ranger is the lack of stun breakers. Overall, I find surviving as a ranger is probably one of easiest among all professions.

I don’t know what kind of condi mesmer you are used to see. But condi mesmer is the 1 of the strongest thing in this game.
I wonder they continue to buff them. PVE they need some love yes, but in PVP.
+ this story about they are useless in group fight is far from true.[/quote]
You never see condie mesmer in tournaments. Rarely in meaningful PvP games. If it is indeed strong, why don’t people use it.
The spec is only good for skirmishes. They can’t focus down targets quickly. They can’t aoe effectively, They can’t stay on points. How do you make it useful in team fight?
Even in side node/small scale fights, condie mesmer still fails at holding points. This makes the spec even more nonviable. Condie survival ranger would be taken for roles like that.
Condie mesmers are not good. They are never viable at all.
I am also not sure about the image and confusing image change. But even after the maim buff, condie mesmers are still pretty bad. They can’t hold point. Their damage is okay but not enough to force a capture. Their contribution in team fight is also low. Bottom line is condie mesmer has some decent 1v1 ability but does not shine in any specific department.
How can anyone take these devs serious?
•Deception: This downed-state skill no longer requires a target in order to cast. ? Dev note: This will allow for mesmers to better use their survival skill when facing an opponent using stealth.
They are buffing one of the best downed states in the game already, while leaving the professions with much weaker downed states in the cold. And the reason!? “Mesmers had trouble dealing with stealth stomping while downed”. Yeah, just like the Warrior, Engineer, Necro and Ranger, who all have an objectively worst Avoidance as it is.
Downed state has been unbalanced since forever, but hey lets buff one of the best right? And these are the people responsible for balance changes. Embarrassing.
No wonder the balance patch’s in this game suck and they can’t handle separating balance changes for different game modes. Unless of course it might harm and inconvenience pvp, then suddenly we can isolate changes to specific gamemodes.
How is Mesmer’s downstate the best? Mesmer probably lost downstate fights to most of other professions. The deception movement is random which means you can end up in a worse position! This is so much weaker compared ele’s downstate where u just vapor to your allies for a ress.
Just some new documentation on the true problem with iMage
- 1. iMage cast within range can potentially hit a target walking away slowly. No speed buffs. (opening seconds)
- 2. iMage cannot hit a target at max range walking away slowly (10s)
- 3. iMage well within range is very likely to miss moving targets within range. This includes mid range attacks, and even point blank range. (1:04, 1:38)
- 4. iMage can be “dodged” simply by jumping while moving. (1:00)
Test subject (thanks Tealot) was able to do all this without even realizing what the test was. In other words he wasn’t even trying to avoid the incoming attacks. He was jumping at random.
iMage confusion stacks and duration do need improvement. But no amount of stacks or duration is going to matter if the application is ineffective. iMage needs his buff, but he also needs a redesign to do with it.
Possible solution: iMage uses his own version of Confusing Images. Traited iMage removed condition on pulse within beam. ICD to match current attack/bounce time?
Nice video. Hopefully balance team from Anet can notice this and fix the problem.
That IP shatter trait setup has always been solid for mesmers in both PvP and WvW. The weapon choice is not limited to GS/Staff. But usually you do at least take one of GS and Staff. The other set can be sword+X
First of all, remember server you chose only matters in terms of WvW. For PvP and PvE, you can get the same experience by residing in any server.
BG is overall the strongest WvW server but it seems all 3 TierOne NA servers(BG JQ TC) focus on a balance between them. So joining any of them shouldn’t make too big a difference. T2/T3 servers are also worth checking out since play style there is more fight orientated(compared to defend and capture objective in TierOne) and it ultimately comes down to personal preference.
Leveling wise, it is not too hard for any of the class. But I find leveling warriors and rangers particularly easy. Necros are not bad at all. They are a bit UP in PvE dungeon runs. But they are one of core professions in WvW zerg. They are great in 1v1 and very dangerous in PvP team fight.

I don’t understand what logic is that. A is choosen over B because B is too good? Let’s nerf B so that no one chooses A?
Let me guess you went in there to map, didnt have any appropriate gear, skills, weapons…
Obviously after 2 years, WvW has become much more of a steep learning curve for new players. PvP provides a way better environment for players to learn and improve.
There are so many resources available, not to mention tons of wvw players willing to help a new player. Yes the learning curve is steeper than pve but if someone is willing to learn there are plenty of people willing to teach. What happens though is that people aren’t willing to learn, not willing to use the suggestions they’re given, etc.
Don’t know that to be the case in this particular instance but it happens a lot more than it should.
Edit : If you’re having trouble in wvw ask in your BL/EB team chat for help. It might take a few times but like I said there are people who are willing to help you, and show you around.
I don’t know if it is as easy as you made it sound like. I have tried plenty of times to get my friends to come to WvW but all failed.

Remember for individuals who want to join us, you are also very welcome. We have plenty of guilds still recruiting.
Mesmer are good in low to mid levels. Shatter spec would help your team the most. There are other specs can also work if you play well. In high levels, thieves will be big problems for you. Also, low margin of error can make you punch your screen sometimes.
Mesmers and guardians are the worst in terms of out-of-combat mobility. Both of them need runes of travelers to be viable in WvW roaming.
It’s the WvW game mode that needs a refresh. Current balance and matchmaking is generating very toxic Tier2 and Tier3 play.
PPK is great. It awards a variety of ways of playing the game. It won’t change the whole server balance but still encourages a fun playstyle. Also, it makes sense for people to care about death in a war. Taking objectives is the main goal but taking out the opposition force is also an important strategy in wars.
My suggestion on PPK would be:
1. No PPK enforced on players with WvW rank lower than 30(number can change). I don’t want PPK to discourage people from trying out WvW. Since with PPK implemented, people know that in addition to being a bag their death also does some extra negative effect on their server.
2. Outnumbered buff let you give no death point to the opponent server. This can help the less populated server and encourage some roaming action on outnumbered boarderlands.
For the no white swords thing, I think it may take some more changes to justify its implementation. The problem is that the game mode does not award scouting. Also scouting can be boring for most players. Forcing players to scout by removing white swords may not be the way to go.
It’s not intended behavior, and we will be fixing it.
Edit: (Specifically the ability to increase the healing potential of Signet of Restoration by cancel-casting Lightning Whip after the first half of the animation.)
Grouch if you change spatial surge (and remove air/fire) as well mesmer will struggle. alot. Please remember this!
Edit:
Interesting, so as we know, the unintended benefit from stowing Lightning Whip is specifically healing, which is now confirmed unintended.
However, there’s no specific mention of the unintended damage benefit from something like Spatial Surge. I don’t feel like Mesmer needs an adjustment down, but it does contradict the logic behind changing stowed auto-attacks.
If they fix one, they will fix all. Just be careful their fix can sometimes bring in more unintended bugs.
Hi,
You are also very welcome to join Sea of Sorrows. We have been a stable server in T2 for a long time and has a variety of guilds in terms of playstyle. There will be short queues within 2-3 hours in reset night. But there should be plenty of space at all other times.
Here is the latest recruitment thread for SoS
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/community/lookingfor/Sea-of-Sorrows-WvW-Recruitment/first#post4677187
One solution would be having these daily profession win achievement different for different individuals.
Ex. player A gets the achievement win as engi and war, while player B gets the achievement win as ele and ranger.
@Amir
Challenge: Go play shatter mesmer in a as braindead way as you can and show us some good results.
WvW is still good on higher tiers. But for sure it desperately needs attention from devs for improvement.
