Grawnk will give you a very easy clue on where Seimur is on that particular day.

Well I do know that if I was loosing a war, I would at least make sure my enemy can’t win either. If I can’t have my nation, then the enemy can’t either.

Of course Ascalon was originally charr land but from his perspective, that’s what I’d probably do.

Really. If you were in charge of an entire nation and you knew you could not win the war would you subject your people to death/permanent undeath instead of fleeing just so that your enemy didn’t ‘win’.

If you’re dead you can’t use the land. What does it matter if the enemy gains it if the cost of preventing them from doing so is killing every single person who looked to you to protect and guide them.

That is horrific.

Only the usual misatropists on these forums (König, Ansari, and cronies) would think he’s a bad guy. Unlike the spineless cowards that ruled Kryta since, Adelbern actually fought to the last – as we all should.

Have some pride.

Ah, so you’re one of those patriots who would rather see his nation destroyed than seeing it survive in a altered/weakened state. Wait.. that makes no sense whatsoever. Especially if you cared about Ascalon you should favor Rurik’s choice. Without Rurik’s choice there would be no Ebonhawke today, there would be no Ascalon settlement today, there would be no Rurikton today and there would be no Ascalonian royalty/ministers in the Kryta upper regions roday. Abandoning Ascalon was the best chance of perserving Ascalon.

We know these things in hindsight. At the moment Rurik was exiled, it wasn’t so obvious. The war still seemed quite winnable at that point, I think.

At the moment Rurik was exiled Rurik had just proven that Stormcaller wasn’t an allmightly Charr-destroyer, but instead sort of just made it rain and raised everyones morale a little. Adelbern decided to ignore that fact and believe that it could be used to win the war. Other than that there was nothing to suggest they could win. Most of Ascalon was in ruins. The searing had destroyed almost everything other than Ascalon City. Only a fool would believe that Ascalon stood a chance. And only a food did believe…

Lordkrall and Aaron are right. Adelbern is the only one who didn’t think the Charr invasion was an imminent problem. Everyone else, the player character included, had seen first hand just how hopeless it was to stay. The choice was either stay and die (oh look, that happened) or leave and maybe survive. The Ascalonian settlement in Kryta was a testament to the viability of Rurik’s suggestion.

I still think that the hunting and slaying of the Karka queen was one of the highlights of my GW2 experience. One of the few one-time events and totally epic with a huge zerg chasing her into the nest. Would enjoy replaying it, but would it be as cool without the huge overworld army?

Unfortunately that was horrific for most people. The server lag was insane, most of the time your skills either wouldn’t cast or would take a long time to cast. A ton of people got kicked out of the game/experienced crashes. It was a mess. I’m glad I got to sit through the whole thing, but it was a mess.

If your character hasn’t completed that chapter in story mode then the mote will not appear for you. This is on a per character basis, not an account basis.

This occurs with other Wintersday events as well. Are you entering these events initially through the portal, or by talking to the NPC? Was talking to a friend about this and we both noticed it happening if we walked through the portal (and then tried to leave the instance) BUT if we talked to the NPC to get into the activity, it never occurred.

Give that a go and see.

I was thinking about it earlier today and thought that might be the cause. I do enter through the portal, and I’m wondering if the first time it tries to load you back into DR it simply throws you back through the portal. Easily fixed by making us load near the WP like the Jumping Puzzle does when you leave it.

Tengu wall and the matching wall in LA

FlamingFoxx.1305

LA won that war thanks to the Risen. Zhaitan’s defeated now. Scarlet weakened LA critically. Remember the guard that says they don’t even have enough personell for one shift? How could they possibly resist the entire Krytan army?

Lion’s Arch is also its own independent city-state that has alliances with the other four major races at this point, on top of other groups such as centaurs (that’s more of a peace agreement though) and Zephyrites.

Also, Edair was a fool. I wouldn’t attack LA from the water – that’s insanity. Naval power is what LA is best at. I’d develop airships like the ones used by the pact and attack them from the sky. Bomb them into the ground, then send in ground forces.

You didn’t read the book did you? Edair not only created a naval blockade with a fleet that the Lion’s Arch fleet (what little there was at the time) could not withstand (they only survived thanks to the risen), but also created a land blockade across northern Lion’s Arch, preventing all trade route access. Edair created a 360 blockade around the entire city.

Also, you do not simply develop something unheard of before. You can say “I’d develop airships!” because you know such would work, but can you think of something completely new to yourself in every way and expect it to not only work, but be useful in combat situations?

This said, your posts convince me that you’re a bit of an egomaniac and I am glad you are not a world leader.

Airships already exist. They don’t have to be invented from scratch. In fact, they already contain human technology.)

Airships did not exist at the time that Sea of Sorrows is set…
The Airships were invented by the pact during the timeline of the personal story, which is years after Edair attacked LA… There were no airships. He had ships, that was it.

Every time I try to leave the Bell Choir (I click the leave instance button) it brings up the loading screen for DR, which then takes it’s time and loads. But the second the DR loading screen is done it just comes up with the Bell Choir loading screen again and plonks me right back in the Bell Choir instance. Which is where I was trying to leave. The second attempt to leave almost always works, but it is hugely frustrating having to do it twice every single time, my internet isn’t super fast and DR takes a while to load.

FlamingFoxx.1305

Of course as long as Adelbern is King, Rurik is only a Prince, and it really wasn’t his call. So Rurik was in the wrong here, even if his intentions were good. He went directly against the order of his father, the King. That is an act of treason, simple as that.

And yet acts of treason is not always wrong.

Should you really listen to a ruler that would rather get his whole kingdom killed rather than ask for help due to pride?

The civilians and soldiers that stayed behind had a choice: stay and fight their age-old enemy for “reasons”, or run to Kryta leaving it all behind. Those that stayed and, ultimately died whether by Charr or Foefire did so knowing that their futures were probably pretty grim.

Beyond that, I’m in the camp that ANet specifically made Adelbern look like a monster to make the Charr more amiable. Or, it’s all a farce ( how Adelbern’s portrayed in GW2 ) and it’s just the Charr’s way of telling the story to again, make it seem like they’re a half-way decent race.

To an extent I agree, but the journey from Ascalon to Kryta was not an easy one. There would have been plenty of civilians who would have been too scared or unable to make the journey through the shiverpeak mountains and into Kryta. The Charr held the lands surrounding Ascalon so it’s not as if there was a clear path. And the way into the Shiverpeaks was infested with Stone Summit, Ettin, and Hydras. Not to mention once you actually got through the Shiverpeaks you had the Orrian Undead to deal with before you actually got to the gates of Kryta. Not an easy journey to make without a ton of protection – hence Rurik being killed on the way.

For suggesting that Ascalon needs the help of Kryta because Stormcaller isn’t some god-like weapon against the Charr his father exiles him. That’s pretty crazy. Your son mentions that it might be a good idea to get help from people you don’t like so you exile him?!

Can you describe the limitations on text displays in game? Does this limit the availability of lorebooks in game that include long chapters for those interested in such things? Is it more complex than simply making a string file? This has always bugged me. I know that with the dynamic event system, Anet has striven to go away from quests with walls of text; but Im curious why this simple solution isnt added in?

There currently isn’t UI implemented in the game to display something like a lore book. We have some places that we can display longer text strings, like those summaries in our recently-added Story Journal UI, but conversational text strings have to be kept within a certain length to account for things like German localization.

There’s not a lot that’s “simple” to implement in a game as complicated as an MMO like ours, unfortunately.

Lore books are something we’d like to see happen, but I can’t promise they are on the way soon or anything.

I’m sure I read/saw somewhere that they were originally implemented in an earlier version of the game back before beta? If I’m not wrong then wouldn’t there already be assets in place for such a system? If I am wrong then whoopsies.

It seems more plausible to me that the iconic and b-iconic characters are becoming more and more distinct from players just for their own sakes. They’re more interesting if they can do something interesting. If Rytlock does have new skills, there’s no guarantee that he will (or can) teach them to us.

That’s a possibility but I somewhat doubt it. You can tell that that kind of thing would prompt immediate backlash because there’s no good reason that players shouldn’t be able to do these things. The PC should feel like one of the most powerful people in the game, if you start giving their allies super-powers it gets a little iffy :S

New to GW2

You cannot make your character automatically run up to the enemy to attack if that’s what you mean.

It’s action based combat, you should be moving around constantly while attacking, Skill 1 is auto attack, if you target an enemy and get close enough and click 1 your character should continue to use that auto attack – but you do need to make sure that you stay close enough to the enemy.

If you’re finding that too frustrating then playing a range class like elementalist will work better since the combat dynamic will seem more familiar – stand at range, press 1 and your character will automatically keep attacking the selected enemy (of course you still need to cast other spells and move around to avoid getting hit).

The game is incredibly different to GW1, so in terms of gameplay and mechanics you should probably just forget everything you know and treat it as a completely separate game.

Maze Balm foes being killed by others

FlamingFoxx.1305

Really?? Just go somewhere else.

And as for heart quests, well, often in the normal events of the game a heart quest – or anything really, all sorts of events – can’t be completed at the specific moment you happen to be there – you go away, do something else, and go back some other time to do it. This is normal gameplay. Seriously, have any of you actually played a game before?

That’s not at all true. If you go to a heart and it isn’t immediately completable it is because either the NPC is dead (in which case you res them) or there is an event interfering with it, in which case you complete that.

If you have people maze balm farming the ambients that you need to complete the heart then even coming back later isn’t going to solve it. Chances are there will simply be another group there doing the same thing.

That being said, to my knowledge almost every single Heart has multiple ways of completing it. There shouldn’t be any where the ONLY way to progress is killing ambients.

This really should be removed from the game though. Maze balm farming is ridiculous.

FlamingFoxx.1305

I’ve even heard that wanting to get rid of secondary professions was one reason they wanted to make a new game instead of another campaign for GW1. .

That’s highly unlikely given that earlier in GW2’s development they actually had secondary professions in game, it was later removed.

Secondary professions are incredibly unlikely. They’d involve rebalancing every single aspect of the game. The addition of a new profession would involve far less rebalancing and is a little more likely.

Maybe, unless they make it so you get 1 heal skill, 4 skill slots, and 1 elite from that class. Maybe 1 weapon your class normally doesn’t have, and no traits. Meaning you’re just taking a few things from the class. It’d also be way easier to balance, since the skills they’d have to balance are incredibly limited.

I think you’re right. If they wanted to do it with minimal balance issues then Utilities would be the way to go. I sitll don’t think they will do it. As I said earlier in the comment GW2 had secondary professions earlier in development. If they decided it was a bad idea back then, they’re unlikely to go back on that decision.

FlamingFoxx.1305

With the Forgotten is it possible that after the last dragonrise they found some way of going into the mists and decided to leave Tyria since they knew the dragons would wake again? Or possibly went to where the Six were in the mists and then after the Six came to Tyria were brought back to be protectors of humanity? They do by all appearances seem to have once again left Tyria evading the current dragonrise (presumably they all went into the realm of torment to redeem it with Kormir?).

So you’re arguing that the Forgotten came from the Mists, left for the Mists, came from the Mists, and once more left for the Mists? That doesn’t make much sense.

As for those in the Realm of Torment – they’ve been there since the Exodus, so there were two “colonies” of Forgotten (at least) in GW1’s time: one in the Crystal Desert, and one in the Realm of Torment, acting as protectors of Ascension/Glint and wardens for Abaddon respectively.

Actually. I was suggesting they were native to Tyria but left for the Mists at some point after the previous dragonrise (possibly to wherever the Gods came from), and were then brought back to Tyria by the Gods to be humanities protectors (they would be a logical choice for the Gods since they would have been familiar with Tyria already). And then now have once again potentially left.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t make sense. If you survived a dragonrise but knew that at some point in the future the dragons would wake again and you had no easy way of stopping them, wouldn’t you want to leave?

“At an unknown time after the writing of the Tome of Rubicon but prior to 786 BE, the Six Gods arrived on the world and brought the humans with them, but from where is not known.”

If the Forgotten arrive in 1769 BE and were supposed to have been placed on Tyria by the Gods then I’d think they may have even arrived prior to that date, rather than 786.

All indications suggest they weren’t here during the last dragonrise. If they were they would have been huge targets or alternatively you’d think they would have helped out.

Wow, tough crowd (mops brow, loosens tie nervously like Rodney Dangerfield)…

Maybe I should have just said, “All I know is that I’m excited about we’re working on.”

Feel free to buckle or unbuckle your seat belts according to personal taste and locally legislated safety standards.

I appreciate that you’re not letting the criticism phase you too much. It’s a good attitude. But it’s worth pointing out that most of your player base fall into that “tough crowd” category. So when people are complaining there’s a problem. Arenanet seems to consistently rely on the whole ‘when you see what’s coming you won’t be disappointed’ line, but players should enjoy everything that is leading up to whatever next big thing you are working on. I know that these forums tend to bring out the overly critical in people, but it would be great if you guys acknowledged that you perhaps need to improve on your middle content. It’s not enough to have a strong start and finish. People want to feel compelled to play the whole way through.

You keep comparing the Living Story to a television season. One of the main problems TV seasons have is that you get a huge spike in ratings for both the first and last episode – everything in between is a lull. Your ending might be great, but it’s losing impact and meaning if people haven’t been enjoying or paying attention to everything in between. It seems like you guys are a fan of big set ups, dropping lots of little clues etc. but people are missing those clues and those set ups aren’t acting as hooks, they’re acting as annoyances.

Tl;dr more focus on story that is compelling the whole way through rather than trying to bank on big reveals that aren’t paying off. I’m loathe to mention this, but remember Scarlet? You guys seemed convinced that once we saw what it had all been leading to (the awakening of Mordremoth) that we would all be satisfied. But the reality is that you have an entire player base who haven’t gotten over how poorly delivered Scarlet’s story is and it keeps being brought up again, oh look at what I’m doing, to emphasise the problems you’re encountering with storytelling.

Oh, so based on what we learned in Ep 7, why did Caithe steal the Egg?

Because she’s not very intelligent? That’s what I feel we learnt from Ep 7 -_-
She blindly does as Faolain says and shows very little regard for the distress she puts Wynne in or the fact that she’s killing a ton of peaceful Centaur who say they DONT want to fight. So basically she completely ignores all of Ventari’s teachings and goes against anything that is supposed to be established as her character. I get that they wanted to establish the relationship between her and Faolain as close, but I don’t think that means she would be a complete imbecile. But hey, maybe she stole the egg because she’s a complete imbecile in which case mission complete/message recieved Anet!

Aaron brings up a really good point. In GW1 you were restricted to 8 abilities at a time and chances are one of those was a resurrection skill. An elementalist in GW1 therefore only had 7-8 abilities at any given time. a GW2 elementalist by contrast has 25 abilities (5×4 for attunements + 5 utility), and on top of that the traits often contain capabilities that would have only been doable in GW1 using skills.

So yeah, it might seem like GW2 professions have more limited abilities, the fact is in GW1 while there was a huge number of spells you didn’t actually have access to any more than 8 of them at a time – meaning that GW2 players are theoretically more powerful given their far larger skill pool.

Every single race faces these issues in the Personal Story. Your decisions have little to no impact on what happens outside of that particular story arc.

As to disagreeing with the position the game puts you in – that’s no different for anyone else or any other video game. The video game has to put you in a specific position and there’s very little wiggle room for you to dissent from that or express a different opinion. RPG’s can get around that a bit because they have the ability to code in a ton of choices (e.g. Dragon Age), but in an MMO they have a far more limited ability to do that.

Someone playing a Sylvari for instance is placed in a position where their character clearly believes in the teachings of Ventari. The player themselves might be more interested in the Nightmare Courts way of thinking, but the game has to place you in a specific PoV, so that player has to play it from the PoV of a Sylvari who is ‘good’.

I don’t care and I hope they’re dead. Quaggan are so incredibly annoying. Token humorous races are immersion breaking and I don’t find the Quaggan at all funny. Opinion opinion etc etc.

How are new mac users supposed to find all of the mac threads that contain crucial information on how to fix the client when it breaks. WHEN not IF it breaks. You guys have made it very clear that you don’t have the time or effort to actually respond when mac users have issues, so why not leave this forum section in place so that mac users actually have some chance of getting the help they need.

It also makes it impossible for new mac users to locate existing threads that have crucial information on what to do when things go wrong.

You might want to post in (and read) the existing official thread, where some of your concerns have been addressed.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link, I have already posted there.

Then you may want to close this thread. The point of the official topic is to prevent lots of individual topics like this popping up and keep the discussion centralised

Faolain, the American Sylvari

@Konig, isn’t it possible that the description of Faolain is a remnant from the previous Sylvari design that for some bizarre reason was never really rectified – back when the Sylvari were more elven and had hair rather than leaves? (not that that would be any better, but I still think it could explain it. I mean it was written by a guy who has nothing to do with the GW universe, so perhaps it just wasn’t thoroughly checked enough).

It’s going to make it much much harder for the mac community to support each other. So unless staff are actually going to be offering technical support then I don’t see this working at all.

I don’t think it is possible.

The Music folder that you create is supposed to be in the Guild Wars 2 folder inside Documents (on windows). For the OSX port all of those files have been shifted inside the actual GW2.app

So if it were going to work anywhere it would be inside the GW2.app in your applications folder. To get inside it you right click and then click “Show Package Contents”. Resources>>transgaming>>C_drive>>GW2 would be the most likely bet. But I’m pretty sure it doesn’t work. The OSX version is the Windows version running inside a wrapper, so it simply doesn’t know where to look for the music files.

The only other option would be to go where you were going before inside Application Support>> go to /Application Support/Guild Wars 2/p_drive/User/Documents and inside Documents create a new folder called “Guild Wars 2” and then inside that create a “Music” folder. But once again, I don’t think it will work :S
